FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD: ROLE EXCHANGE AU
Meeting Greed
It turns out that one of the seven homunculi was none other than William's automail mechanic's boss. A small world, after all.
I thought the Rush Valley crew would be a fitting gang for Ed!Greed. I won't go into detail but Greed is the 4' nothin' mafia don of Rush Valley. He and his gang front as an automail shop, while constructing weapons and trading secrets behind the scenes.
Rose is an interesting case but that should be expanded on elsewhere, sometime.
Anyway, now. They're at an stalemate: Bill wants his brother back; Greed wants Rose safe. Equivalent Exchange, right?

Fic: Diverging Paths (1/31)
Summary: Xerxes falls and the only two survivors walk away from the dead city.
Homunculus is keen to make the most of the new human body he now wears, and he goes out into the world, still planning his ascension to godhood as he strips away his vices and turns them into homunculi.
Van Hohenheim believes he has become a monster, and he hides himself away, befriending the other abominations of the world, failed human transmutations doomed to agonising half-life without the intervention of a Philosopher’s Stone.
Years later, Homunculus meets Trisha Elric and sires two sons with her before vanishing into the night, whilst Hohenheim tries to foil his doppelgänger’s schemes.
Years after that, Edward and Alphonse Elric are caught up in the middle of it all...
A Father-Hohenheim role reversal switcheroo, following Mangahood’s main plot with elements of ‘03, based on the premise ‘what if Father was Ed and Al’s father and Hohenheim was the one hiding under Central?’

If it wasn’t for the stranger, Ed reflected, he might be dead. Staring up at the cloudless sky above Resembool, he remembered the mysterious figure who’d appeared during their altercation with Scar in Eastern City. They had only been there for a minute or so and they had disappeared as soon as the military had arrived; vanishing as quickly as they had come onto the scene as they dashed into the darkness of the alleyway they had jumped out of in the first place. Still, their presence had been enough to turn the tide, levelling the playing field and distracting Scar for long enough to allow Mustang and the others to come and take charge.
They hadn’t been an alchemist, at least, Ed hadn’t seen them use alchemy, but they were fast, and they were strong, and as Ed had looked on in a haze of pain and panic and my arm is destroyed and I have no defence and I’m about to die, he had caught a glimpse of their face beneath their hood - a sharp, angular, youthful face, with messy blonde hair.
The thing that struck Ed most, though, were the eyes.
“You’re thinking about the stranger again, aren’t you?”
Ed glanced sideways at Al, then looked back at the sky with a sigh.
“Yeah, I guess I am. I just can’t get over the eyes, you know? I’ve never seen anyone with our colour eyes before. Apart from, you know. Him.”
“Yeah.” Al gave a long sigh. “Do you think…” He trailed off, but Ed could follow the train of thought. He didn’t press the point, letting Al come round to it eventually. “Do you think they might be related to us? I mean, if our father had other children, then perhaps…”
Ed really didn’t want to think about it. It wasn’t that he was averse to the idea of having more family members, although it was a very strange concept to consider when his family had consisted of just Al and Mom for as long as he could remember. He just didn’t want to think about his father for any length of time. Especially not about where he might have gone, what he might have done, and whom he might have done it with. Ed didn’t even remember his father, he’d left that long ago. Hell, Al had never even met the man; he’d vanished into the ether whilst Mom had still been pregnant with him.
“Granny kept that photo, you know,” Al said presently, and Ed sat bolt upright.
“What?”
“That photo of our father, the one that Mom always kept. Granny snuck it before we burned the house.” Al paused, contemplative. “I think she wanted to keep it in case he ever showed up again so she wouldn’t forget what he looked like and she could beat him up.”
Ed snorted. “She’d have to wait in line.”
They fell back into silence for a while, both lost in their own thoughts.
“Would you want to meet them?”
Ed raised an eyebrow. “Who, our potential half-sibling?”
“Yes. And any other potential half-siblings that might be out there.”
“I don’t want to think about us having any half-siblings at all, let alone more than one.” Ed scoffed. “Still, I suppose we could bond over weird eye colour and terrible fathers.”
“I think it would be interesting to meet them.” Al continued to muse. “Maybe they might be able to tell us more about him.”
“Maybe. I don’t want to know more about him, though. I know all I need to know. He left when I was tiny and you weren’t even born. He left Mom on her own with a toddler whilst she was pregnant. That’s all I know and all I want to know. I don’t care about anything else.”
“I know. A part of me feels the same way, but then, there’s a part of me that keeps asking why. Why did he leave?”
“Because he was an asshole.”
“Well, yeah, I guess. He never said anything to Mom, did he?”
“Nope. She woke up one morning and he’d vanished. It was like he was never there.”
“He saw, he conquered, he came, and then he buggered off.” Ed turned sharply on hearing Granny’s voice. “I thought you might be talking about him. Al told me about the mysterious friend who saved your skins.”
She held out the small snapshot as she came towards them, and Ed took it, passing it to Al without looking at it. It was the only photo of their father that existed, and despite everything, Mom had always kept it. It wasn’t out of any sentimental value, not really. She’d kept it more as a reminder of everything he’d done, leaving her high and dry with two children and no explanation.
She’d never liked to talk about him all that much, but sometimes she’d told them stories of the mysterious man who’d turned up out of the blue one day and swept her off her feet, a man with hair and eyes like the sun and brilliant alchemy to match. Sometimes Ed wondered if his and Al’s dabbling in alchemy had ever caused her pain to think of the memories of before they were born. She’d never shown anything but pride in their work, but it must have been a reminder every time they transmuted something.
“Well, if this mysterious friend is related to that bastard, then it sounds like they’ve certainly inherited the disappearing act genes.” Granny sighed. “You know, I can’t decide whether you chasing this thread would be a good idea or a bad one. There are big warning signs flashing everywhere I look; the same warning signs that started flashing when he came to town and began wooing Trisha in the first place. I always feel like I should have been able to do more to protect her, but if there’s one thing that can be said of your mother, she was a determined woman. You definitely get your stubbornness from her.”
Here Granny gave Ed a pointed look. “There’s a part of me that wants to just let the whole thing stay buried. He caused enough trouble when he was around, I don’t want him causing you two even more trouble now that he’s not around. At the same time, though, there’s another part of me that thinks maybe it would be good to find some more of his relatives.”
“We’ll be careful,” Ed said. “Whatever happens. Besides, we’ve got other threads to chase.” He thought of Dr Marcoh and his research hidden in Central Library, the key to the Philosopher’s Stone and potentially the key to getting their bodies back. That was far more important than chasing after potential half-siblings via their errant father.
Granny raised an eyebrow. “Hmm.”
“We have got other threads to chase!” Ed protested. “We have a new lead on the Philosopher’s Stone.”
“That wasn’t what I had an issue with,” Granny said dryly. “It was the ‘we’ll be careful’ part. I’ve never known two people less careful. I know you don’t do it intentionally, but I swear one of these days, you’re going to get yourselves into something that’s going to give me a heart attack.”
Al laughed. “Nothing could phase you enough to give you a heart attack, Granny.”
“You just keep believing that.” Granny snorted. “Anyway, Winry’s just finishing up with your arm, Ed. She should be ready in a few minutes. Then you can head off on whatever madcap adventure comes next.”
She left them alone once more, going back up to the house, and Ed fell to thinking again. Finding the Philosopher’s Stone was their first priority, and nothing would change that. Still…  Even though Ed didn’t really have any desire to find any potential family members, not like Al did, he couldn’t help but be intrigued by the stranger. There was something about them that really wasn’t normal, something in their speed and agility that seemed… off. And how had they known that Ed and Al were in trouble and needed help anyway? It wasn’t like they were just passing by on the street, not when everywhere was so empty due to the rain and not when they’d appeared out of nowhere. Although Ed hadn’t been paying attention at the time, the more that he thought about it now that he had the leisure to do so, the more he came to the conclusion that the stranger had appeared and helped them purposefully. They’d known that he and Al were in trouble and needed someone to buy them just a few precious minutes.
It was still troubling though, and just as Granny had described, Ed could see the warnings flashing too. Why had they run off when the military had arrived? Why not stick around to make sure that Scar was incapacitated and that he and Al were all right? He couldn’t deny that the stranger had certainly helped them, and probably saved their lives, but they likely had their own agenda just as much as Scar did, even if Ed and Al weren’t currently on the wrong side of it.
He pushed the thought to the back of his mind, determined to focus on their mission in Central and the Philosopher’s Stone instead. He was sure that their meeting had not been a coincidence, and he wondered if they’d cross paths again, but that was a bridge they would cross when they came to it. They had more important things to think about right now.
He still couldn’t get those golden eyes out of his head, though.
X
“You know we’re not supposed to intervene like that. You’ve been at this far longer than I have, you know that secrecy is everything.”
“I know, but I had to. I didn’t think that the military would turn up in time and someone had to stop the poor kid from being exploded. Besides, it’s the Elrics. I can’t just leave them to their fates.”
“I know. Well… I won’t tell anyone if you don’t.”
“Thank you.”

about the FMA AUs post:
tldr: YES I WANT TO MAKE MORE!!
There's one idea where's it's simply roles reversed. Ed's in the armor, he's probably super reckless since he feels nearly invincible. Must protect Alfonse at all costs, now to the extreme. (also does not flinch when mistakenly called the FMA, maybe Al plays into the joke)
Other AU takes place at the end of 2003 when Ed's trying to sacrifice himself to bring Al back. Instead of passing through the gate, he is placed in a timeline where he had died, replacing this timeline's dead Edward. (I know this makes no sense, maybe god/Truth is having fun here or something) In this version, Al didn't have the strength to attach Ed's soul to armor in the very beginning, thus losing his brother forever. When Ed appears, Al believes he is a homunculus and is understandably very upset.
I wrote a little something for the latter, but writing is not my strong point. ^^; I'm tempted to make a little comic of it instead.
(in response to @elibii @skytastiic @doin-a-heckin-science @dontforget-oct3 and several others, thanks!!)

“Hello, Riza,” Roy said, his voice warm and velvety as he stepped over to her side. He slid a finger beneath her chin, gently coercing her to lift her head, exposing the black ouroboros that was branded into the curve of her neck. The scar from the assimilation had long healed, the tattoo-like mark being the only evidence it had happened.
She met his dark eyes.
He leant in close, a devilish smirk playing across his lips as his face drew closer to hers. “Long time, no see, darling. How about a kiss?”
There was a quiet click.
Roy’s body went rigid as he glanced down, feeling the cold metal of the gun pressed against the underside of his chin.
His eyes flicked up to hers, watching as the rage burnt behind the swirling brown depths.
He held his gaze, her composure unwavering as a strand of her blonde hair fell in front of her face.
“Come now, sweetheart,” he cooed.
She let out a dry laugh, the corner of her lip turning upwards as she drew back on the trigger.
Roy’s body jerked backwards, red sparks dancing across his skin as his flesh quickly pulled itself back together. He staggered slightly, regaining his footing and slowly straightening himself. A wicked smile played across his lips as his hand brushed across the underside of his chin, feeling the healed wound.
“Now, now, Riza,” he scolded mockingly. “That’s no way to treat a friend.”
“We’re not friends,” Riza replied, her voice void of any emotion as she levelled her gun on him.
“You’re right,” he said, a hint of mockery in his tone. “We’re more than just friends.” His smile grew wider as he took a step forward, letting the barrel of the gun rest against his forehead. “Aren’t we?”
“Enough!”
The booming voice silenced them.
Roy took a step back, straightening his back. Riza reluctantly lowered her gun, holstering it in the small of her back.
Alex Armstrong stepped out of the shadows, his body towering over them. “When the two of you are done squabbling like children, we have work to do.”
I couldn’t resist, I had to write something of the Fullmetal Alchemist Reverse/Dark AU. I don’t think this will ever become something, but I hope it does.

colors fade into the flames (black and white is what remains)
Edward admitted it made sense to have an alchemist in each pair when the four of them split up to search for Barry the Chopper in the sketchy-ass tunnels they'd discovered beneath the military's Third Laboratory. What he didn't understand was why Colonel Hawkeye got to pair with Lieutenant Havoc while Ed was stuck with Lieutenant Bastard.
(The events in the Third Laboratory, in a double-role-reversal AU.)

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: Role Exchange AU - Jonah Berg (AKA: HUMAN SLOTH)
Tumblr media
"I won't let... anybody catch me..." said the giant man as he lumbered through the streets of Dublith. Before breaking back into a sprint, he found himself being jostled backward by his right hand. "Gotcha!" said Catherine, as cheerful ever, "That wasn't too hard." "...Strong..." was all her new prisoner uttered in response.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jonah Berg - this AU's name for the human Sloth - is this story's Paninya.
Since Catherine doesn't have any interest in Automail, Rush Valley would not impress her at all. However, meeting a Herculean Strongman in Dublith would certainly peak her interest. After all, Catherine finds super strong men with huge muscles really attractive. I wonder why...
This AU keeps being explored very randomly. Sorry about that. I'm very distractable.
Honestly, I didn't expect to ever illustrate this, because, as it turns out, Sloth is really difficult to draw. No reference photos have him at good angles and his hunched posture was hard to pose out, especially with his muscles. I'm happy with how he turned out here.

Holy shit you unlocked my trap card!
--
Roy had kept put with the current situation. Both him and Alphonse had trekked the halls for a long time. He wondered if it was ten or fifteen minutes since he and the colonel split up, but that was his mistake for letting his unease get the better of him. Riza needed her right-hand man, not some cheap ass flunkie.
He scrunched his nose, and flinched at the pang that ricocheted through the passageway.
"What was that?" Alphonse turned, looking wearily at the doors they'd passed.
"Whatever it was, we should hurry." Roy cocked his pistol, sharp and quick, like a click of a tongue. "I don't want to get caught with those freaks on our tail."
"Neither do I."
More doors and more empty creepy rooms. Everything seemed to be made of concrete, of some solid substance, and Roy noted of the scuff marks, of the alchemy that formed each piece of infrastructure. Whatever happened here, there must've been an extensive amount of alchemists to create a place such as this. It seemed too deliberate, too massive of a project. Shit, how far were they under the city? How far did this entire thing go?
He started to count his footsteps. Too late now, but might as well make himself useful.
In a moment, a brightness permeated the end of the corridor. Roy blinked, squinting more.
"It's a door, lieutenant!"
"Sure, is." He licked his lips, keeping his gun close. If anything happened, he had more heat packing in his holsters. He should be able to hold out if anything didn't go to plan. "Let me lead the way, Alphonse."
Alphonse relented, almost hesitant. "Okay."
The light made his head throb. The walls were bleach white, grand, almost touching the sky from how it stretched itself to heaven and hell. In front of them, etched in alchemic symbols and letters, was a gate. Whatever was behind it, Roy didn't want to find out. And at the base, where the air smelt rancid, laid Barry's body in a smear of its own blood, Barry looking down at it, stiff and unmoving.
Barry turned to them. "Took you guys long enough. I thought I was gonna leave here all by my lonesome self."
Walking forward, Roy scrunched his nose, biting his tongue before the urge to throw up took hold. "Dammit, that was one of our leads too."
Barry tapped the blunt edge against the body's calf, pushing and pulling at it out of what seemed to be boredom. "Sucks for you but have some sympathy for me. My body's rotting to hell." His armor seemed to rattle at that. "Those bastards put someone else's soul in my body. Guess it didn't take well to its new occupant."
Knowing the circumstances with the brothers and the semantics of soul-binding, it wasn't surprising to hear it again. And yet, Roy found himself curious, almost horrifyingly so. "You're meaning to tell us that a soul could be rejected at any time?"
"Heh, that's right," Barry said. "The body and soul were in conflict with each other. No wonder it's in poor condition."
Roy frowned, taking another sour look at the decaying body, at how it looked uncanny to the many bodies he had killed — with the same skin, the same smell, the same lack of life. There was a time limit to Alphonse. Of course there was. Nothing could ever be easy for them, and it was the most bullshit thing he knew to be true.
"Well, looks like we have a party in here, hm?"
Roy turned and caught the eye of a woman, dressed in black, hair almost wrapping her in night. And her eyes, he couldn’t stop looking at them, for they were the color of red — cold and crisp as the blood on the floor.
Barry cackled. “Nice to see you caught up, Lusty. We were just about to leave.”
“Number sixty-six!” Her voice too. Cold and unyielding. “I see...so they used you as bait, and I fell for it.”
Roy kept his eye on her, gun pointed dead-center where her heart was. “Barry, care to explain who this woman is?”
“That doesn’t concern you.” The woman kept walking forward, enough to make the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. “I’m here to take care of some business, and I’m not a fan of men who snoop into such things.”
A small gasp behind him. “Lieutenant, she has—!”
“I see it.” Roy narrowed his eyes. “I don’t need much to believe you’re one of them.” He kept note of her eyes, at how they didn’t flinch nor close. As if she was in a joke of her own, one where only she was a part of. “A homunculi, right?”
She didn’t even looking at him. “Number sixty-six, why did you help the colonel?”
Barry cackled, giving a shrug. “What can I say? I gotta be me! You’d think I want to kiss up to you guys and hide for the rest of eternity when I could be chopping up to my heart’s content? I can’t even stalk around Central unless you bozos plan to drop me in guard duty again.” His knife glinted, thrusted out in pride. “The only way I can be free is if you’re all dead. But above all—” He hurtled toward her. “—I want to chop you to pieces!”
In an instant, pieces of scrap littered the floor in deafened thuds. The silence took hold, gripped them like a vice. Roy gritted his teeth, going cold at the sight. She destroyed him, with no hesitation. "You monster."
"You had to stick your nose into things out of your control," she tutted. Her fingers were sharp as daggers, receding back from the punctured metal. "I've no choice but to keep the silence. Killing two human sacrifices is quite a pain."
"Human sacrifices?" Al gasped.
Sacrifices? Killing? Roy stared at her, narrowing his eyes as he waited, listening, blood starting to pound in his ears. Was it? It could. "So, entertain us for a second. One of your candidates wouldn't happen to go by the name of Maes Hughes, would it?"
Her glossed lips quirked up. "No. I've met him before however. An intelligent man, strong-willed too. It's too bad that his curiosity killed him in the e—"
Roy shot her in the chest. The sound ringed in his ears, left his blood pumping when her form jolted, slick with red, but was left standing regardless.
"No need to be so merciless." Her smile was cruel. She hid so much information that could be vital to their cause, and she was just smiling at him. "I told you what you wanted."
"That doesn't explain who are the sacrifices," he calmly stated. He directed the gun again, now at her legs. "Speak up."
"My you're persistent." She looked over at Alphonse. "One of them is standing right beside you."
Alphonse stood his ground. "Me?"
"You and another. Now, who shall I kill first?" She looked at them, fingers seeming to grow more and more, readied by her command. "The sacrifice? Or do I have to send the lieutenant back to his colonel?"
Another shot rang out. The woman got onto her knees, shuddering forth in shock. And Roy didn't hesitate to shoot her again.
And again.
And again.
He showered her with bullet holes, with red sparks and metal, and as his fingers burned, his ears screamed, and the heat in his head scorched, everything in his mind yelled at him to kill.
