omg i just saw a tag on one of your recent posts saying you could talk all day about how the cod boys smell and i’m begging you PLEASE do!! i’m a huge fan of perfumes and one of my favorite things to do for characters is to compile scents that i think would fit them the best. i’m super curious what your thoughts are and i would love to hear more!
thank you so much for this!! i had a lot of fun with it! 🖤
Ghost: dead leaves, pine, cedar, fall air, laurel, balsam, smoke, clove bud, black patchouli, mushroom caps, dampened black soil. he smells like a thick, dense Pacific Northwest forest after a heavy rainfall or a piece of driftwood washed up on the shore — Roja Parfums APEX or Tom Ford Costa Azzurra
Soap: amber, violet, magnolia, guaiac wood, pink pepper, earl grey tea, steamed milk, vanilla, grass, clover, sun-warmed cornfields, muguet, honeysuckle, acacia, ozone, meadow air, tree moss, oakmoss, fir balsam, lavender, and cumarin (which smells like freshly harvested hay). he smells like a field in the zenith of summer, maybe freshly cut grass; something sweet and rich — Dolce&Gabbana Intenso or Viktor & Rolf Spice Bomb
Price: tobacco, agarwood, whiskey, resins, white musk, leather, vetiver, sandalwood, amber, suede, mysore sandalwood, vanilla husk, chamois accord, Alaskan cedarwood, tobacco leaf, black oak, cardamom, saffron threads, miel blanc. he smells like a pub that's always empty or an antique store; thick with smoke, and heavy with leather and tobacco — Tobacco Oud, Ombrè, or Tobacco Vanile by Tom Ford
Gaz: orange, Italian lemon zest, green apple, tonka beans, amber, woody vanilla, tuberose, iris, tiaré, paperwhite narcissus, night-blooming jasmine. he smells like the coast in the spring; sage and sea salt — Versace Eros or Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur
Alejandro: spicy (almost cola-clove-y), resinous, premium myrrh accord, frankincense, oud, myrrh, bergamot, neroli, patchouli. he smells a little bit like being on the balcony of a nightclub: fresh air cut with the thick tang of spice and smoke wafting through the open doors or the ocean on a humid summer night after a rainshower soaked the sand — Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio or Ralph Lauren Polo Earth
Rodolfo: strong coffee, streusel coffee cake, nutmeg, brown sugar, toasted almonds, cardamom, ambergris, cashmere wood, vanilla, saffron. he smells like a cafe in the morning, sweet and robust; or a bookstore —Byredo Vanille Antique or Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540

Happy 2024, y'all! It's a sunny day here on the SW Washington coast, and I'm off to a slow, sleepy start after managing to stay up until midnight in spite of myself. I hope you all are having a good start to the shiny new year.
I thought this would a good moment to reflect on the accomplishments of 2023, and look forward to what 2024 might hold.
Last year was, well, a lot of good stuff! Here are a few highlights:
--In addition to keeping my regular roster of online and in-person classes for various community colleges and libraries, I added a few new teaching venues. By far my favorite was the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, where I had a marvelous time teaching my two-day Nature Identification for the Everyday Naturalist class amid an incredible coastal forest (they're bringing me back this year, too!). I also got to teach in my hometown in Missouri, with a mushroom foraging class at Rolla Public Library and a lichen walk at the Ozark Rivers Audubon Nature Center, both of whom I hope to work with again in the future. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the series of classes I taught for Wildcraft Studio School in Portland--I'm looking forward to my next round of classes with them for 2024!
--I launched my guided nature tours business, offering ecologically-focused walks and hikes throughout the Pacific Northwest. This was very much a year of "throw things at the wall and see what sticks." Both scheduled hikes and private bookings were successful, though sometimes people thought I only did one or the other, so it was a bit of a challenge getting the word out that nope--I offer both! I'm hoping to expand the scheduled hikes to more locations, since I primarily offered them in the Long Beach, WA area, and I'm hoping to get some private bookings in places I haven't had a chance to explore yet. I do have to say I had a lot of fun taking people out onto some of my favorite trails, as well as some new places, exploring all the amazing flora, fauna, and fungi we met along the way. Here's to more excuses to get outside in 2024!
--With the help of my amazing agent, Jane Dystel of Dystel, Goderich & Bourret LLC, I landed a contract with Ten Speed Press (a division of Penguin Random House) for my book The Everyday Naturalist: How to Identify Animals, Plants, and Fungi Wherever You Go. This is an opportunity well beyond anything I had imagined, and I am super excited for the book to be released in Summer 2025. I've already gotten some excellent editorial feedback to help me make this book the best it can be, and I'm looking forward to this continued journey as I kick off the new year with a big writing session.
--I kept up on my quarterly chapbook schedule, producing four new chapbooks in 2023. It's a lot of work, but people really seem to enjoy them, and I relish the opportunity to dive deeper into topics than I can do in a single article. Speaking of articles, I didn't quite keep up with writing one weekly on my website, but I did alright. And I also kept up a good roster of articles in my Rainy Rambles column for the Coast Weekend paper.
And that's really what I'd love to see in 2024:
--More opportunities to teach and reach new audiences who are interested in learning more about nature identification, foraging, and other natural history topics. Since I do a lot of online teaching, I have plenty of options outside of my local area. And as I make my twice-a-year peregrinations to Missouri, I'm planning to do some teaching along the way.
--More tours, please! 2023 was a really great start, and I had such a great time that I just want to increase the number of days I'm out on the trails with folks. I need to do more promotion, especially outside the Columbia-Pacific region, and really work on getting the word out. Some of that will be online, but there will also be some time spent out in the world, too. It can be a very time-consuming thing, but here's to those efforts paying off.
--I already need to have the manuscript for The Everyday Naturalist turned in this April (I'm going to aim for getting it done early, but we'll see.) A lot of the process beyond that will be out of my hands, other than edits and feedback. Still, this will be another thing that I want to make more people aware of, so you can expect me to keep chatting about book stuff all year. And, of course, I'll keep those article sand chapbooks coming for those of you who can't wait for 2025 to read my work.
--I have some other projects behind the scenes that I'm planning--keep your eyes peeled here for updates! (Or you can join my monthly email newsletter here.)
Wishing you all an excellent 2024!

Unconventional Plants and Herbs in Witchcraft:
Entry No. 2
Self-Heal (Prunella Vulgaris)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
General Information and History:
General info:
Self-heal is common in most temperate climates, Native to North America, Asia, Africa and Europe.
Grows readily in damp soils: roadsides, clearings, fields, lawns, forest edges. Common at low to middle elevations.
Suitable for use as a pot herb.
harvest young plants for eating, generally before flowering (unless planning to use for medicinal purposes).
Is a member of the mint family.
History:
The common name(s) Self-heal and Heal-all come from the plants medicinal use for a wide variety of ailments.
Different indigenous groups had varying uses for the plant. One example is: The Nuxalk, who boiled the entire plant and drank as a tea to ease heart related ailments.
Medicinal Information:
Note: use at your own risk. If pregnant/nursing, taking medications, or have medical conditions, contact a physician prior to use. Please be aware that medicinal herbs are meant to be used in moderation. This is NOT a guide to usage.
Possible Properties: Astringent, diuretic, antioxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, mild antiseptic, antiviral.
Traditional methods of use: Tea, poultice.
Used to treat: Sore throat, fevers, superficial wounds, gastrointestinal issues, colds, and much more!
Usage in Witchcraft:
Now, as for the usage in witchcraft there obviously isn’t much widespread information, in cases such as this I like to follow the lead from other information on the plant (name, medicinal properties, factors of growth, history, personal experience, etc). as well as combine with other practices, such as colour magic. This is why other information on the plant is important to know, even if it’s not directly related to witchcraft.
Please note: that this is a personal correspondence. As such, you may see it differently or have different ideas. That’s okay too! Your practice is yours alone, feel free to share your ideas :)
Correspondences: Healing, Protection, Spiritual growth.
I feel that prunella vulgaris would be a great addition to baneful work as a sort of “all over, encompassing” attack, specifically if it was rotted/molded first.
Other very important information
Some information is derived or cross referenced from: PLANTS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST Washington, Oregon, British Columbia & Alaska. (Paul B. Alaback)
This is a SUPERB field guide if you live in the area(s) mentioned and it carries a wealth of information. I HIGHLY recommend it!
In regards to foraging:
Be safe, sustainable, and ethical when foraging.  (Click the link)
ALWAYS positively identify before use. If you’re not 100% sure, don’t use it!
Be prepared for a possible negative reaction or allergy. When trying new things, try a small amount first.
Know the local area/the dangers (terrain, wild animals, incoming weather, etc) be prepared!
DO NOT take more than you need/can use. (This does not apply to invasive species)
Harvest from different locations if possible.
Do as little damage to the plant and grounds.
Use a mesh bag to collect in the case of mushrooms.
Make an effort to spread seeds from plants when harvesting if possible. (This does not apply to invasive species)
This post is not a comprehensive guide to Self-Heal and it’s usage, it is a general overview of information that I have compiled, and not necessarily beginner friendly. Please treat it as such. Happy spell crafting! :)

Chile declares state of emergency over raging forest fires
Chile has declared a state of emergency as it battles spreading forest fires in the centre of the country that have so far killed at least 10 people.
“All forces are deployed in the fight against the forest fires,” President Gabriel Boric posted on X as he announced the measure, adding that emergency services would meet on Saturday to assess the situation.

The fires have ravaged thousands of hectares of forest since Friday, cloaking coastal cities in a dense fog of grey smoke and forcing people to flee their homes in the central regions of Vina del Mar and Valparaiso.
At least 10 people have died, according to a state representative of Valparaiso.
“We have winds of close to 40 or 50km [25-31 miles] per hour,” said Leonardo Moder, the director of Valparaiso’s national forestry corporation.
“This wind is hard because it carries lit leaves, branches or pieces of wood, and each creates a new little fire that grows into more fires,” he added.
The blaze is being driven by a summer heatwave and drought affecting the southern part of South America caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon, as scientists warn that a warming planet has increased the risk of natural disasters such as intense heat and fires.
In the towns of Estrella and Navidad, southwest of the capital, the fires have burned nearly 30 homes and forced evacuations near the surfing resort of Pichilemu.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” 63-year-old Yvonne Guzman told the AFP news agency. When the flames started to close in on her home in Quilpue, she fled with her elderly mother, only to find themselves trapped in traffic for hours.
“It’s very distressing because we’ve evacuated the house but we can’t move forward. There are all these people trying to get out and who can’t move,” she said.
About 7,000 hectares (17,300 acres) have already been burned in Valparaiso alone, according to CONAF, the Chilean national forest authority, which called the blazes “extreme”.
Images filmed by trapped motorists have gone viral online, showing mountains in flames at the end of the famous Route 68, a road used by thousands of tourists to get to the Pacific coast beaches.
On Friday, authorities closed the road, which links Valparaiso to the capital, Santiago, as a huge mushroom cloud of smoke “reduced visibility”.
As Chile and Colombia battle rising temperatures, the heatwave is also threatening to sweep over Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil in the coming days.

Public Coast Brewing re-releases seasonal Uncle Fred’s and Stackstock, and introducing Violent Violet Blueberry Double Hazy IPA.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Press Release
CANNON BEACH, Ore. (April 5, 2023) - Public Coast Brewing Co. has re-released two of its “special release” beers: Uncle Fred’s German Wheat and Stackstock Candy Cap Stout and added the latest collab beer with Big Dog’s Brewing Co.: Violent Violet Blueberry Double Hazy IPA respectively. Only available for a limited time, the three beers each provide a refreshing taste of the bounty of Oregon as we head into the spring and summer months.
“We’re excited to bring back two very special fan favorites and a new collab beer this season,” said Will Leroux, Public Coast’s head brewmaster. “Uncle Fred’s German Wheat beer, brewed in honor of our friend, Fred Bowman, is refreshing and full bodied, with just a dash more clove and banana than your mother’s famous muffins. Violent Violet lives up to its name, packed with fruity tartness which allows the fruit to shine through and pair well with the malts and slight bitterness. And our Stackstock Candy Cap Stout continues to be a crowd pleaser for mushroom foragers, foodies, and craft beer drinkers alike.”
Uncle Fred’s German Wheat beer, a 5.0% ABV, is brewed with at least 50 percent malted wheat and also includes lemon drop hops. This style of beer will be light in color and typically carries notes of banana and clove. Uncle Fred’s is an easy drinker, highly carbonated, bubbly, and refreshing.
Violent Violet Blueberry Double Hazy IPA is as luscious as it sounds, a 8.2% ABV, it’s a stronger take on a regular IPA – amplifying it with a bigger malt and hop profile. This beer contains fresh blueberries paired with extra hops and extra malt, which means it’s pretty EXTRA - extra fruity, extra hoppy, and extra hazy.
Stackstock Candy Cap Stout, a 5.8% ABV, highlights the bounty of the land by infusing a stout beer with Candy Cap mushrooms, the hidden gem of the Pacific Northwest. This beer contains notes of roast chocolate, coffee and dark fruit with the subtle taste of umami from the mushroom. Think maple, caramel and pralines – like a sticky bun.
All three releases are for sale on-tap and in cans at Public Coast’s brewpub in Cannon Beach. For a full list of beers on tap, visit: publiccoastbrewing.com/beer/.

Looking For A Home In Panama
The business sector has been quick to take advantage of the demand for real estate by foreigners who are moving to Panama. Projects to accommodate the influx are mushrooming in the form of high-rise condominiums in the city, spreading along the Pacific coast and appearing on islands, in rural settings and in the mountains.
The trend began in Bocas del Toro several years ago. Boquete then soared into the limelight with endorsements from U.S. retirement publications and the construction of the Valle Escondido complex.
Now the demand is spreading, not just to other areas of the Chiriqui highlands such as Volcan and Cerro Punta, but to Panama City and the mountains and beaches to the west of the city from Chorrera to Cayman boat charters Carlos.
On the following paragraphs, we offer a resumé of some of the projects under way.
El Alcázar de Coronado Coronado Resort, on the beach 80 km west of Panama City, one of the best known, and longest-established developments in Panama, has launched a new residential complex, "El Alcázar", designed for the growing community of foreign retirees and relocating families in Panama. Its most striking feature is a 21-story con-dominium overlooking Coronado's superb golf course.
El Alcázar offers 64 four-bedroom residences with ample balconies offering vistas of the Pacific Ocean and the forest-clad hills of the Continental Divide. There will be 24-hour security, a heliport, a modern emergency alarm system, connections for internet and cable TV and two central air conditioning units.
Residents of El Alcázar will be entitled to free membership at Coronado's golf, beach and equestrian clubs, in addition to the resort's Full Wellness Spa (the therapists of which are trained in alternative medicine at the prestigious Uplledger Craneal Sacral Institute) and other facilities. Owners also will also have the right to rent their apartments to third parties.
Tumblr media
Tucan Country Club A haven for golf and nature aficionados, it is possible that golfers and residents will see not only toucans, but plenty of wildlife, at the Tucan Country Club since this magnificent course and residential development is bounded by virgin rainforest on one side and the Panama Canal on the other.

I just enrolled in a class called Forest Mushrooms of the Pacific Coast (to refresh my mushroom knowledge). Thought I’d share in case anyone is looking for low-cost options to obtain a mycology education. Its a 5 part webinar series starting in October. If you can’t attend live, there are also recordings available for anyone enrolled. The class is $49 but scholarships are available. The link is above (and below in case you prefer copy and paste!)

Unconventional Plants and Herbs in Witchcraft:
Entry No. 3
Stinging nettle (Urtica diocia)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
General Information and History:
General info:
Depending on the subspecies, Urtica diocia is either classed as native or exotic in British Columbia. However, in some places in North America it is classified as invasive. Nettle can also be found in north Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Readily found in disturbed habitats (roadsides, barnyards etc). Meadows, open forests. Always in rich moist soil.
The entire plant is edible after cooking or drying
The sting comes from the small needle like hairs on the plant, when they come into contact with skin, irritating chemicals are injected (such as formic acid).
History:
Nettles have been used for hundreds of years, not only as a food source and a medicinal, but for textiles and fibres as well. It is incredibly strong when used for fabrics and holds up to the test of time.
Medicinal Information:
Note: use at your own risk. If pregnant/nursing, taking medications, or have medical conditions, contact a physician prior to use. Please be aware that medicinal herbs are meant to be used in moderation. This is NOT a guide to usage.
Possible Properties: antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, antihistamine, hypotensive, diuretic, as well as the ability to prevent cardiovascular disease.
Methods of use: edible, tea, tincture, hair rinse, etc.
Used for: painful muscles and joints, eczema, arthritis, gout, anemia, allergies, hair growth…and more!
Usage in Witchcraft:
Now, compared to my other two entries, nettle is much more common compared to the others. However, I believe it is under utilized and under appreciated. So while it might not fit under the “unconventional” aspect of these posts, I decided to write on it anyways. Below lies the most common correspondences I found.
Common Correspondences: Protection, Purification, Healing, Binding, Banishing, Boundaries, Warding, Lust, return to sender.
