Double Trouble by Gbagok
Tumblr media
...or Double Mischief* in this universe, as classic they co-exist with a classic Double Trouble, who is even an important part of Double Mischief's backstory.
*(Double Mischief is the name for Double Trouble in MOTUC, due to copyright issues rights, and a fun re-use of it for a Decomposite Character of Double Trouble)
This is the second character from SPOP Gbagok incorporated into his version of MOTU, after General Juliet, though the first that is a SPOP-specific version of a preexisting character:

I love motu lore researching but currently having difficulty finding the source of the name of Evil-Lyn's mother supposedly being Maligna. I suspect it's from MOTUC but just wanted to be sure and you seem like a expert when it comes to motu lore etc.
Okay well first off I’m honored 💚 and so proud of you for trying to verify! Never trust an uncited source around here lol.
Second off, you’re right! It comes from about the last MOTUC bio you’d expect: Dark Despot Skeletor
Tumblr media
I was pretty sure it was Penny Dreadful’s work since I’ve seen her handle Brazilian stuff before, and gbagok has had Mal-Lyssa for evil-mom for years now, but it looks like it was his idea!
Tumblr media
Thank you for asking anon! This was a fun one 😊

So I thought that Frosta’s castle was still called Castle Chill in the reboot but apparently it isn't. It's called Castle Evernight according to Adora's Rebel Princess Guide book.
Yeah the books are kind of… deuterocanonical. Most of the stuff will be in line with established canon but sometimes they’ll throw a curveball like castle evernight” or “they’re sisters :)” that are just like. Individual authors’ opinions or blind spots? Like they’re trying to worldbuild but tragically bricks have been laid there for 30+ years, they just didn’t see them.
Here’s what I think happened. Tracey West, the author of the Rebel Guide, has written hundreds of children’s books, including oodles of cartoon adaptations—establishing both that she likes cartoons and that she isn’t like, a MOTU archivist who would know minutiae off the top of her head.
Whether through deliberate homage or a simple mix-up… I think it may be a reference to Evernight Castle from RWBY.
Tumblr media
Like alright. I can see some resemblance there. This location was introduced in 2016 so it’s not like it’s anachronistic. And it wouldn’t be out of character for her to have watched it.
But that’s just a theory. I may reach out to her, but I feel like she’s gonna be harder to get ahold of than gbagok & less likely to have/remember the answer.
Frosta’s home has a couple different names anyway—Castle Chill, Castle Snow, the Ice Palace—it just depends which canon (deutero- or otherwise) you pull from. Castle Chill is from the Filmation show, so it’s most widely accepted & known, and it’s what I’ll be sticking with.

Its funny Filmation's Hordak's silhouette looks oneheaded. I know Masters of the universe Classics, took two heads to mean "has two heads can interchange on his body at will", but I suppose its also possible there's also face/head in his body?
The silhouette face we saw here
Tumblr media
Was interpreted as a face/head between his shoulders by fan artist gbagok, back in 2008.
Tumblr media
Which I think looks pretty neat.

Masters of The Universe is great because there’s so many characters that one of them is pretty much guaranteed to be your type, but it’s also awful because the sheer amount of characters means that 90% of them are used once and then never properly utilized again so have fun being the only source of fan content for that heroic warrior who showed up once in the Super Adventures books and then vanished off the face of the earth.

Hordak and the Unnamed One in SPOP
Tumblr media
As in the title, it's interesting it's specifically noted that in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Hordak started out as literally Unnamed (something noted in the series) and only took on the name Hordak some time after coming to Etheria. Making me wonder if this is a coincidence (more probable), or a reference to a fan theory that in the 1986 Powers of Grayskull storyline, Hordak was the Unnamed One, instead of Gorpo, or as was to be the case in the 200X comics (kinda) Horde Prime. (I elaborated on this theory in my discussion with @lemaistrechat here). Though as I discussed with @toonjukka , the identity of the Unnamed One in 80s seemed to had been undecided.
SPOP did reference some obscure lore, and even maybe fan lore/theories - up to for example, in Origin of Hero, the novelization of The Sword two part pilot, Octavia, in what is meant to be an offensive and insulting joke, suggested Catra (and probably her kind) are from Beast Isle...and in gbagok's fan lore, Catra was from Beast Isle, and the book possibly referenced it in a creative way...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still, like the Unnamed, and Hordak in He-Man and She-Ra Power Tour lead Snake Men, SPOP Hordak' forces were in large part composed of Rogelio's lizard men species, being kinda Snake Men like (if separate from them), with Rogelio and the rest of his kind seemingly being inspired by the prototype design of Rattlor, as is some of Rogelio's characterization.
Still, this would be just a reference then - Hordak rather wasn't present on ancient Eternia/Preternia, seeing it's strongly implied Hordak is relatively young in SPOP/not ancient. (Unless the portal to Despondos/Etheria transported him 500 to 1000 years into the future..., but that's just a rather a pretty improbable theory).

2021 CGI King Grayskull inspiration
Tumblr media
CGI King Grayskull is a interesting character, perhaps the most interesting version (due to being both a hero and villain, and it making sense), and he has a number of inspirations both in MOTU sources and those outside it.
Out of versions of King Grayskull, the DC comics one seems to have the most influence (which has sense Rob David large part in making both), were several characters stated King Grayskull was not as noble as it seemed. The issue being though, the two people stating it were not really reliable sources - Hordak and King Hiss (impersonating/wearing the skin of Adi, him doing it to persuade Saryn and other Gar to kill Grayskull).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still, this caused He-Ro to have given a way disproportionate punishment, seemingly committing genocide against the Gar, and declaring them legal pariahs and exiles, even striping them from the ability to name themselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, the Gar were also lead to commit horrible acts when lead/corrupted by King Hiss (impersonating Adi), but that's not a rational reaction, or proportional punishment.
About He-Ro, CGI King Grayskull, in many ways resembles an older He-Ro - he is a dark haired man in golden armor, wielding both the Sword of Power and a magic staff (as Grayskull stated he used the Havoc Staff even before infusing it with Havoc, making me think it's meant to be a corrupted version of He-Ro's staff, even resembling it in it's uncorrupted/dormant and semi-dormant form), as well as being both a warrior and sorcerer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Making me think he is a composite character of He-Ro and King Grayskull, very probably taking inspiration from the 200X comics which were to do the same (ie revealing King Grayskull is an older He-Ro).
Tumblr media
And with 200x MOTU, King Grayskull's helmet is also based on the one Randor wore as a captain in the 2002 cartoon, and as a prince during war in MOTUC comics:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Outside of MOTU, King Grayskull also is quite similar to Odin in Norse/Germanic mythology, and Marvel comics (and their adaptations):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Odin also has darker aspects, both in Marvel - seen as for example in Thor: Ragnarok, that Odin was a genocidal war criminal far in past. Or in myths that Odin was willingly sacrifice much and many, to give gods and humans a chance to survive Ragnarok, and in general despite having empathetic traits in myths, was heavily pragmatic. Odin's darker aspects are even visible in some of his names - Ginnarr (Deciever), Yggr (Terrible One), Draugadróttinn (Lord of the Undead), as well as his role as a god of death and dead (which is often overlooked).
Curiously King Grayskull also resembles gbagok's partly Odin-based semi-fan character, the All-Father (leader of the Ancients and brother to Nordor/Horde Prime):
Tumblr media
Semi, as he is based on the (seeming) leader Magic Kings from ancient Eternia, whose spirits now inhabit the Anti-World, and who were implied to be the Ancients. These characters are from the German He-Man/MOTU comics.
Tumblr media
It also does seem his helmet did inspire Randor's in the 2002 cartoon.
[EDIT: As clarified by @toonjukka, while designs of Randor's and the leading Magic King, are unrelated - as German comics only became available online in 2004, years after the production of the 2002 series pilot "The Beginning"]
Another Golden Armored Demigod could inspire CGI King Grayskull - the Emperor of Mankind of Warhammer 40k:
Tumblr media
Like the Emperor of Mankind, King Grayskull is a well-intentioned extremist, who hypocritical used the power of what he fought against (ie King Grayskull proto-Havoc of the Snake Men; the Emperor either made a deal with the Chaos Gods for more knowledge and/or power, in order to arm himself against them, and broke it, or stole their knowlege and power). The Emperor though was not overtaken by Chaos.
Both also ended up as skeletons guarded by their most loyal servants (and some thinking/hoping he would come back), and both are remembered as saintly, when in fact they weren't, and their message was misunderstood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Well, King Grayskull became a "bone-head" even before death...)

The Garius Asteroid Belt on Horde Empire map is what is left of the destroyed original Gar homeworld. While Infinita is a bit far away from it and Eternia too. But yeah Trap-Jaw came from Infinita. Didn't know about the Skelcons though very interesting.
Oh right I forgot about that TG vid… man he has no idea how wormholes OR black holes work
Yeah so basically Marlena accidentally did a Death Star & the survivors were sent back in time to Preternia by like, idk, temporal ripples or some shit. TG said the planet was also named Garius, but then he did claim Trap-Jaw was a Gar in the same vid…
I think the Skelcon bio was a Masters Monday exclusive, iirc they didn’t have time/space to release it on the packaging so they uploaded it afterward. Lot of fun stuff in that thread… would love to regain access to it at Some Point

S5 She-Ra transformation inspirations
Tumblr media
This is a very well liked form, and in-universe we know the source of this transformation - being based on Adora's bonds with Catra, Bow and Glimmer, as even shown in the concept of it by Ray Geiger:
Tumblr media
The headpiece/diadem reflecting Catra's mask/headpiece; the heart on the upper chest referencing that of Bow's, in the same location; the winged boots, being inspired by Glimmer's boots. The Boots and diadem changed a bit, with the wings on the boots being a a bit different, and visible only in close-ups:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still, there are out-universe inspirations.
One is, of course, being intentionally more similar to Filmation She-Ra:
Tumblr media
But there are others. Starting from the 3 mentioned details connected to Adora's loved ones.
The diadem reflecting Catra's mask, almost certainly is inspired by the fact in the original She-Ra toy and minicomics, the headpiece doubled as a mask, mirroring Catra's mask:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Modern toys also referenced this, including Masterverse She-Ra:
Tumblr media
The heart symbol, along with the pauldrons and upper looking like coming of elongated bustier's wings, might be inspired by the 2002 design of She-Ra, and it's influence on the initial concept art by Nate Stevenson. As the the choker and higher located, and longer bustier wings/feathers, create together an image of a heart (especially on the 200X She-Ra doll), and resemble together the season 5 form:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like in the 2002 design of She-Ra, the uppermost ray of the She-Ra symbol "pierces" the bottom of the heart shape. While unofficial, this is even more visible in gbagok's take on the 200X She-Ra design:
Tumblr media
The choker-like part of S5 She-Ra's upper armor, resembles also the DC She-Ra's open choker:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is possibly not the only influence from that design.
the wings on S5 She-Ra's boots, appear to also be inspired by the Nate Stevenson's initial design:
Tumblr media
It also appears the golden "bracelets" on S5 She-Ra thighs, appear to have elements of the 200X design of She-Ra, especially as seen on the toy - they appear to be in part inspired by the bracelets on it. But also combined with the golden decorations on the skirt, coming from the belt, both creating together a vaguely downward upside down, triangle shape, and have feather/wing motives, in more or less the same location:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's notable the wing-like/feather-like part of the bracelets, is actually on their front part, as seen from the side:
Tumblr media
It also seems to be inspired by downward triangular/arrow shape on the skirt in Nate Stevenson's concept:
Tumblr media
Which itself appears to be inspired by the 200X design's golden decoration of the skirt I mentioned.
The bracelets/rings, also might be inspired by Mara's single ring on her right thigh in her original design:
Tumblr media
It's a bit complicated though, as the rings/bracelets, might be a decorative upper part of over the knee boots, though I think the inspirations for it still hold up.
Mara's She-Ra transformation does appear to further influence Adora's transformation into She-Ra, both in and out of universe:
Tumblr media
IE, similar pauldons, boots (including golden lining on the upper end of boots), detailed bracers, wearing long pants, and similar skirt.
As I wrote when analyzing the possible inspirations for Mara's design, this design being influenced by MOTUC' Galactic Protector She-Ra, the same applies to S5 She-Ra. Especially that like in the MOTUC storyline this form debuted, Adora wen to outer space, and confronted Horde Prime there, like in season 5 of SPOP:
Tumblr media
Though the skirt also resembles that of She-Ra in DC:
Tumblr media
Though without the crotch flap compared to both DC and Galactic Protector She-Ras. It's possible here either, or both were an inspiration. The skirt also has in this form rather uniquely merged with/subsumed the cape. Which is also similar to how in minicomics, when She-Ra used her headpiece as a mask (apparently to use her full power/truly transformed into She-Ra), her cape disappeared (as seen in the page near this post's top).
It's interesting, and I think fitting the final form of Adora's transformation, has such (possibly) rich inspirations from MOTU and POP history.

Review: The MotU Book
Tumblr media
The Masters of the Universe Book: The Epic History of He-Man, She-Ra, and the Masters of the Universe by Simon Beecroft
if you care about accuracy, don’t buy this book.
There’s a strong slant towards He-Man in most MOTU books (more than understandable, he's the face of the brand) but I've never seen it this bad before. The basic history of the line, the show, the invention of She-Ra--all decent, if on the simpler side. There's a nice timeline at the beginning and some rarely-seen art (I bought the book in the first place for the promise of Noreen Porter illustrations), but the textual portions of the Princess of Power section are poorly researched and contain multiple errors & misleading implications.
Where the He-Man section contains details on Mark Taylor's Torak, and illustrations of early characters like Vikor and Demo-Man, the She-Ra section doesn't so much as mention Justine Dantzer, implying that Noreen Porter created She-Ra from whole cloth. Beecroft quotes Jon Seisa, a Mattel supervisor, twice in two pages--and it's not that Noreen Porter is undeserving of such effusive praise, or that she should go unrecognized, but in a book presenting itself as a history of the brand it feels Pretty Stupid to repeatedly quote a supervisor instead of detailing, you know, the history of the brand. The women who actually created it. Because as amazing as Noreen Porter is, she didn't do it alone. Justine Dantzer, Jennifer Kiernan, Sylvia Shapiro--they don't rate so much as a mention?
To say nothing of the disjointed mess of in-universe descriptions. It's readily apparent that the bulk of Beecroft's research was done on Wiki Grayskull. E.g., describing Sweet Bee as an Andreenid (a term used solely in the MYP He-Man cartoons, and never in reference to her, not even in her MOTUC bio), placing the Kingdom of Snows in the fictional "Dreaming Mountains", little details like that. Most damningly, Catra's "backstory" in Purrsia. I found this especially frustrating as its paragraph on the wiki was appallingly written. Even someone with only a passing familiarity with the series is capable of recognizing incomprehensible sentences and thinking to themselves, "Perhaps I should fact check this". Not only was Purrsia an invention of big name He-Fan gbagok, the iteration on Wiki Grayskull was corrupted almost beyond recognition, preserving only the 'fact' that Purrsia was an island.
It's not that I was expecting to learn much from this book--again, I was mostly here for the illustrations--but to see such easily falsifiable misinformation makes me feel kind of insulted? Like you supposedly had all these He-Fans fact-checking and not one of them cared about POP? You, as an author, didn't care enough to cite your real source, or even just stick to the information in the Character Guide & Lore Compendium, which was actually fact-checked?
2/10. Perfectly palatable if you ignore the She-Ra section, but I can't take it seriously when the book affords so little respect to its readers and subject material. One point for layout, one point for the Noreen Porter illustrations. I'd have rather paid for access to the images directly.

How are things going with screenshots and visual development etc? Found more interesting stuff?
Well I think so, but I think we can all admit that my interests aren't universal. For example!
SJ Stine uploaded a production workbook chronicling from 11/16/16-8/26/17. Now, good news and bad news--bad news: it was uploaded as a video so it's even more difficult to make out the words than on scanned images. Good news: I'm an insane person & if there's one thing this blog has taught me, it's how to composite screenshots, so like. i'm on it.
I've also made headway on my personal quest to discover why C'yra of D'riluth III.... is. In that I found out who came up with it & I have emailed him. It's only been about two weeks & I waited 7 months for gbagok to confirm Purrsia as fanon so.... we could be here a while. I'm trying to be normal about it. I can be normal for answers. I can.
There's a lot of wider MOTU stuff that I won't be uploading bc it just isn't relevant to SPOP 2018, but even tangential stuff will make it on here eventually. Like MYP He-Man had a concept for a scorpion guy, but I want to get a better pic than this:
Tumblr media
like it's cool but i would love something that isn't a picture of a book, you know. and if ii could read the thing & find out why he's dressed as a caligar, all the better
