Last night I watched The Batman movie again, and although I liked it, it also made me remember that it would have been interesting if at the end there had been a ticket for Hally's circus. Although of course, I don't know how they would have put it in, so it remains as headcanon

Crossover Advent Day 17!
Christmas Magic by TheologyDiscography
Clint Barton & Harry Potter
1694 words, rated G
Merry Christmas,
My name is Clint Barton, and I'm 10. Hallie told me that my present will go to someone who needs a friend, and something to make their Christmas a little bit better. I hope it does, that it makes things better for you. I hope you'll want to be my friend, there's nobody in the Circus my age. Other than me and my brother, the youngest person is 16. I really miss having someone to talk to. Especially since Barney thinks he's too old to spend much time with me anymore.

I’m back and with a vengeance!
It’s ya boy Dicks turn. I’ve reflected on my relationship with canon and decided I don’t have one so if people feel like it’s ooc, then your probably right and you can fight me in the Denny’s parking lot.
Age: I am a firm believer that Dick is in his early twenties so like 22.
Got adopted by Bruce at 9-10 and had his rebellious faze around 16.
Gender: Male, he/him pronouns
Sexuality: This man is pansexual I’m sorry but it’s the truth.
Ethnicity: Romani. DICK GRAYSON IS A PERSON OF COLOR SAY IT LOUD FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK.
Favorite food: Cereal. I firmly believe that Dick can cook but simply chooses not too.
-Dick has ADHD, this man is hyperactive, has the attention span of a mushroom and is constantly stimming. Like your trying to tell me he bends himself into all these wacky shapes just for fun exercise? Wrong, he’s fidgeting and just has the range.
-Dick practices gymnastics to work off all his excess energy.
-I also headcanon that Dick has Joint hypermobility syndrome. He didn’t get treated for it until he moved in with Bruce because everyone just thought he was a really good circus kid. Bruce figured it out when he realized Dick had trouble writing and and doing precise actions with his hands. Dick went to occupational therapy for a few years after that.
- This is all to say Dick has a Superman themed hand splint he uses when he needs to write for long periods.
- Dick slowly drifting away from Bruce happened a lot less violently than in canon for me for a few reasons. One I think Bruce is a better parent here and is a lot less emotionally neglectful of Dick and treats him with more respect. Relatively speaking, Bruce is still a broody emotionally constipated emo. Instead I think a lot of it has to do with the teenage desire for freedom, Dick had a really mutable life in Hally’s circus where he was meeting all different kinds of people and traveling all over the place, but now is has a much more structured lifestyle and he wants to push the boundaries. The other reason is because I don’t like DC making Bruce ✨physically abusive✨.
- I think their first big fight is when dick decides to really test the limits by sneaking out to go to a concert, he ends up having a few drinks and smoking some cigarettes. When he got back to the manner Bruce was freaking out. They end up having a screaming match about being responsible and Dick feeling like Bruce is too controlling.
- In reality before Dick got back Bruce was having a full blown panic spiral because he thought one of the rogues captured Dick.
- The fight that actually causes Dick to finally run away is one night Bruce finds him having a moment with another boy from Gotham Academy. A lot of Bruce’s repression, trauma from his childhood and internalized homophobia flares up and he says some cruel things to Dick. Bruce goes up to Dicks room an hour later to apologize to him but his room is already empty.
- Dick spends the next year primarily with the Titans, sometimes he calls Alfred. Bruce tries to contact him many times but Dick ignores him. After this he moves to bloodhaven and becomes Nightwing. Dick learns that Batman has a new Robin and is furious.
-When he goes back to the manner he comes in swinging. He immediately tries to pick a fight with Bruce and starts yelling, this ends up scaring Jason that he hides in the library. Dick learns that Bruce is in therapy to unpack his trauma and Dick leaves.
- The first night Dick spends at the manner is a few months later, his relationship with Bruce is still bad buts he’s willing to tolerate him now at least. In the morning he finds a stick figure drawing that was slid under his door while he slept showing him and Jason holding hands. Dick decides if he can’t repair his relationship with his dad coworker for himself he could for this kid.
- Sometimes Dick let’s Jason sleep at his apartment on the weekends and teaches him French. Their relationship isn’t perfect but Dick grows to love his little brother.
-Then Jason goes off the grid and Dick learns about Jason’s death. Jason’s funeral is the first time Dick calls Bruce dad again.
- I think that Dick warmed up a lot to Bruce and really supported Tim I’m becoming the next Robin. I think he tried to keep his emotional distance but ultimately really warmed up to Tim when he asked Dick to teach him gymnastics to improve his acrobatic skills.
- When Damian shows up I think Dick is really conflicted because while he is internally excited about having a new baby brother he will never get over the trauma of losing Jason so he’s really on guard.
- Dick feels his big brother instincts kick in when he sees some other boys bullying Damian because he isn’t white.
-When Cass shows up Dick has fully given up on resisting the urge to baby his siblings. He helps her practice ballet and they have flexibility contests.
- Dick is in a throuple with Kory and Wally, sorry I don’t make the rules just serve them up.
- When Jason comes back I think Dick is hit almost as hard as Bruce. Dick first runs into Jason one on one After the events of under the Red Hood, and sees Jason kill someone. Dicks brain kind of short circuits because he is watching something terrible but on the other hand Jason is still baby brother shaped in his mind.
- Jason finally starts talking to Dick again when he breaks into Dicks apartment to snoop and sees that Dick keeps the drawing Jason gave him framed in his bed room.
Trigger warning for the next part: SA/R*pe
- Dick getting assaulted by tarantula was really changed Dick. Like obviously it would, but DC never talks about it so I will. After Tarantula, Dick started self isolating, he wouldn’t leave his apartment for days on end. Feel water on him was a big trigger so he started to even avoid showering. Eventually Kory and Wally found him and brought him to the manor.
-His recovery was really slow going and years of undiscussed objectification, mind control, memory loss and sexual harassment had left Dick with a terrible self image. But the batfam really pulled together to support him. Bruce even convinced him to go to therapy. He’s getting better day by day.
Okay this was so long and basically just evolved into a story outline, promise I’ll try to reign it in next time.

Cameron Dorly: It’s been one month since the tragic suicide of Gabriel Santos at the royal wedding of The Earl and Countess of Boykins. The tragedy happened in the South West Cloister of West Simster Abbey just before the ceremony.
Shon Gableton: Queen Rowena, who was discovered to be with Gabriel at the time of his suicide, was then accused of being an accomplice to his suicide by a republican newspaper and sued them for libel.
Tumblr media
Cameron: Today’s Supreme Court ruling will determine if this saga is over for good or if the newspapers claims against the Queen consort had merit. Although she did not appear in court to give evidence, the queen consort sent a statement making clear that she was innocent of any wrong-doing and that the false claims caused serious damage to Her Majesty's character.
Shon: The newspaper reported that Queen Rowena changed into a duplicate dress, after Royal Security removed her from the scene, and then returned to the royal wedding while security managed Mr Santos’ body and talked with police. The newspaper claimed the original dress, which was apparently lost during evidence transfer, had significant traces of gun residue consistent to someone close to a fired weapon, contradictory to investigators reports that the Queen consort was several feet away.
Tumblr media
Shon: “During a press conference last month, lead Investigator, Terry Farrington, formally announced her department had closed their criminal investigation and ruled Gabriel Santo’s death a suicide. She added:”
The Queen consort was several feet away and was in no way complicit in the decedents suicide. Any newspaper report of a duplicate dress are based in falsehood. As a witness, Queen Rowena was a willing participant in our investigation and our department saw no findings to consider her a suspect.
Shon: “Gabriel Santos’ wife, who also happens to be The Minister of Defense, released a statement shortly after thanking the Royal Family for their support and praised investigators for their thorough yet thoughtful investigation. General Santos said she had accepted their findings and found closure.”
Cameron: “Has the public? There are still no answers as to why Gabriel would kill himself at a royal wedding, in front of the Queen consort!”
Tumblr media
Cameron: “So, today’s ruling could be groundbreaking. Many believe a Queen consort should share Sovereign immunity, a customary principle under which the King and the criminal law simply don’t mix. It was last tested in court in 1912, when King Edward I was accused of bigamy: the Lord Chief Justice decided that the King could not be ordered to give evidence, and that was the end of that.”
Shon: “Well, I’m sure the new Earl and Countess of Boykins enjoyed being on their honeymoon the past 4 weeks avoiding this media circus. Palace sources say the newlyweds returned to Windenburg yesterday to be with the family for todays’ ruling.”
Tumblr media
Shon: “Hallie is live at HM Court in Brindleton Bay, where the Supreme Court sits, as we await the courts ruling.”
Hallie Howell: Hi, Shon and Cameron. Police have done a great job keeping crowds back, in preparation for the courts decision. We we will bring you LIVE coverage when the Supreme Court issues their ruling. Let’s hope the court rules in favor for the Queen consort so The Royal House of Windsor can finally move past this ordeal. For now, back to you in the studio!

Next up for the BRAVE NEW GIRLS teaser feature: my steampunk circus tale, “A Special Theory of Circus,” about a teen physics nerd whose visit to her trapeze artist sister becomes more eventful than planned when a rival circus tries to sabotage the show! I had so much fun writing this cute little story ☺️. Also, I actually had to learn about the physics of flying trapeze before I could write about it and weirdly it helped me with my own trapezing… Illustration by @liveartbyadriano! Love how much personality he gave both Hallie (the physics nerd) and Lulu (the circus artist). 📚🎪 Preorder link for BRAVE NEW GIRLS: CHRONICLES OF MISSES AND MACHINES in bio! https://www.instagram.com/p/CdcAUELrIF2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The reality of living in a Workhouse in the Victorian era
Tumblr media
For a while there I misunderstood the notion of a workhouse versus an orphanage in “Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji.” I mistakenly took them the same. Though both institutions were wretched and subjected to cruelty and hierarchy, workhouses don’t exist anymore. Whereas orphanages are still relevant and still part of the modern society (fortunately or unfortunately). Poorhouses already existed in England throughout the centuries. The first workhouse was built in 1835 in Abingdon, Oxfordshire under the Poor Law Amendment Act. They officially closed in 1930 after the Local Government Act in previous year. Though a few still thrived till the 1960s. These were now converted to hospitals and care homes. Their existence coincided with the growing number of paupers living in England in the Victorian era.
There were several ways of accommodations for those “too poor” during that time. From doss houses to temporary lodging houses, anonymous living quarters, to living in a workhouse to, last but not the least, staying on the streets. London was a filthy, stinking witness to those who couldn’t afford the standard of living either by chance or intent (the sick, the old, the alcoholics, prostitutes, the orphans, the jobless, etc.). The Southwell Workhouse was said to be one of a kind as it was the model workhouse, lovingly well maintained by its inmates. In fact, one can visit it and be informed of the life living in that kind of institution.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the manga and anime (Chapter 35: In the Afternoon, The Butler, Executor/Book of Circus, Episode 10) Yana T painted an ideal picture where her troupe of Noah’s Circus Ark first-stringers had a “better life” in a workhouse after living roughly on the streets. Joker went on to become Baron Kelvin’s butler/personal assistant and Beast and the rest as the domestic help until they were asked to form a circus group. Joker still believed that children still resided in the workhouse until he fell into a harsh realisation during the course of Ciel and Sebastian’s summary execution that the doctor, with the permission of the Baron, made an experiment on the remaining children.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In reality, this was quite the opposite. According to Hallie Rubenhold’s recollection of the forgotten victims of Jack the Ripper, “The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper,” Londoners would rather stay for a night on Embankment or camp on Trafalgar Square than be stuck in a grim workhouse. She recounted the tale of an old couple whose husband was used to be working in a theatre as a musical director when an injury occurred, found himself soon to be jobless. They couldn’t pay the rent and lost the privilege to live in dignity.
“The thought of throwing themselves upon the mercy of their local workhouse was too shameful and frightening even to consider.”
They opted to live on the street sleeping on one of the stone benches of the square.
Families were also separated once entering the premises of a workhouse. Furthermore, to be able to stay in a Victorian workhouse one should be willing to work, demeaning it might be, in exchange for lodging and nutrition.
The original scheme of classification of inmates categorized females under 16 as 'girls' and males under 13 as 'boys', with those aged under seven forming a separate class. It probably came as a surprise to the Commissioners that, by 1839, almost half of the workhouse population (42,767 out of 97,510) were children. ( x )
The men, women, and children were all housed separately. Children were only allowed to spend a brief amount of time a week with their parents. However, most children in a workhouse were orphans.
Men and women (inmates) were expected to work 10 hours a day seven days a week. It was so demeaning that people chose it as a last resort.
Both men and women had to work doing something called oakum. This was a task where old ropes were unpicked for many hours at a time, so that the threads could be mixed with tar on board ships to waterproof sailing vessels.
… Men were expected to stone breaking, grinding corn, work in the fields, chopping wood. While women did the laundry, cleaning, scrubbing walls and floors, spinning, and weaving.
… Girls had some lessons, but generally they were taught needlework and other domestic skills so that they could become a maid or servant at the age of fourteen. ( x )
Tumblr media
One famous inmate of St. Asaph Union Workhouse, Henry Morton Stanley, who found the missing explorer Dr. David Livingstone, only had this description for his former accommodation: “A house of torture.”
One way or another, Yana T’s imagined ending of her own version of a workhouse was not that far off. Ciel looking at the ruins and then having a breakdown.
