Also it fuckedme up trying to learn certain words in Kanji or whatever bc I kinda know Chinese so trying to retrain myself not to say jung guo ren or yi sheng when I see the same characters is hard. But also cool when they make the same sound. I also once knew Korean so here and there I see cognates it's cute

Batchim rules
There are 7 key batchim rules that depend on the consonants used. Some characters like ㄱ, ㅋ, and ㄲ share the same rule as you can guess because they are very similar consonants.
ㅇ = ㅇ
ㄱ, ㅋ, ㄲ, ㄳ, ㄺ = ㄱ
ㄷ, ㅌ, ㅅ, ㅆ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅎ = ㄷ
ㅁ, ㄻ = ㅁ
ㅂ, ㅍ, ㅄ, ㄿ = ㅂ
ㄹ, ㄼ, ㄾ, ㅀ = ㄹ
ㄴ, ㄵ, ㄶ = ㄴ
Tumblr media
I’ll lay it out like this:
WORD –> PRONOUNCIATION : ROMANIZED
1. Rules for ㅇ
Starting off with ㅇ because it’s important to batchim rules overall. Once you learn how to read hangul you learn ㅇ is either an empty space when used first (like 아니) or an ‘ng’ sound at the very end (like 사랑).
The ‘ng’ sound is the ㅇ characters batchim, it never changes. BUT there’s more- if ㅇ begins the next syllable in a word the batchim will change:
있어 –> 이써 : isseo
있다 –> 읻다 : et-da
For the first one the bottom consonant ㅆ takes over the space of ㅇ for pronunciation making it sound more like 이써. 있다 above follows the normal batchim rules and the ㅆ takes on a ㄷ sound.
2. ㄱ, ㅋ, ㄲ, ㄳ, ㄺ = ㄱ
This rule affects consonants including ㄱ or his relatives and simply makes anything a ㄱ sound no matter how hard the character would be on its own. Even ㄳ which is combo k and s becomes just k sound.
한국어 –> 한구거 : hangugeo
책은 –> 채근 : chekgun
3. ㄷ, ㅌ, ㅅ, ㅆ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅎ = ㄷ
This affects a bunch of consonants so it’s important to remember.
꽃 –> 꼳 : ggot
좋다 –> 조타 : jota
There’s a special rule about ㄷ and ㅌ ending before a ㅇ though. You’ve probably heard it with 같이; instead of becoming 가티 the ㅌ changes to ㅊ making it 가치.  ㄷ changes to ㅈ as well.
같이 –> 가치: kachi
4. ㅁ, ㄻ = ㅁ
몸이 –> 모미 : momi
5. ㅂ, ㅍ, ㅄ, ㄿ = ㅂ
없다 –> 업따 : ob-da
없어요 –> 업서요 : ob-seoyo
Now ㅂ has some special rules for itself, you probably knows 감사합니다 but it’s not pronounced kamsahaBnida it’s more like kamsamnida
ㅂ starting a word – use a softer b sound: 바나나
ㅂ in the middle –  it creates a b sound: 일번
ㅂ at the bottom – can have m sound depending on what follows like in 감사합니다
A trick to think of is try saying 감사합니다 20x fast. Maybe originally the word was pronounced fully but people get lazy, slur their words, etc and pronunciation goes towards what’s easiest.
6. ㄹ, ㄼ, ㄾ, ㅀ = ㄹ
별이 –> 벼리 : byeo-re
핥은 –> 할튼 : halteun
7. ㄴ, ㄵ, ㄶ = ㄴ
앉다 –> 안다: anta
돈이 –> 도니 : doni

~조차
[This post features songs by ATEEZ, CL, and IVE]
조차 is attached to nouns to say "don’t even" or "not even". This particle is always used with negative statements and has the nuance of a situation not meeting the basic requirements or a person not doing the bare minimum. It is also often paired with the expression ~은/는커녕 to further emphasize its meaning (more on that later 🤭).
Note: The structure ~(으)ㄹ 수조차 없다 is paired with verbs.
Sentence structure(s)
1. noun + 조차
Ex. 내가 장학금을 받게 줄은 생각조차 못했습니다.
(I never even thought I’d get a scholarship.)
Ex. 프랑스어를 배웠는데 지금은 숫자조차 생각나지 않아요.
(I used to learn French but now I can’t even remember the numbers.)
Ex. 아이는커녕 애완 동물조차 키우고 싶지 않아요.
(I don’t even want to look after pets, let alone children.)
*예문 taken from Dreamer Hangugeo
2. verb + (으)ㄹ 수조차 없다
Ex. 무대가 너무 멀어서 배우의 얼굴을 볼 수조차 없었어요.
(The stage was so far away that I couldn’t even see the actor’s face.)
Ex. 자전거를 타고 슈퍼마켓에 가다가 오토바이와 부딪쳤어요. 지금은 너무 아파서 걸을 수조차 없어요.
(I was riding my bike to the supermarket and I ran into a motorcycle. It hurts so much that I can't even walk.)
*예문 taken from here
~조차, the k-pop way
“날 나조차 다 알 수 없으니”
-from After Like by IVE
Meaning: Even I don’t know myself
"간식조차 없는 판치는 니들 잔치"
-from SPICY by CL
Meaning: Your feast doesn’t even have any snacks.
"방향조차 선택할 수 없어 겁이 나"
-from Take Me Home by ATEEZ
Meaning: I can’t even choose a direction. I’m scared.
*가사 taken from Color Coded Lyrics
**워크시트 taken from Oh My Korean!

Sep 29, 2023 ・❥・Week 1 Day 1 of prepolygot's Langblr Reactivation Challenge
Day 1: Create an introduction post about yourself. What's your name? What languages are you studying? What languages do you hope to study? What do you hope you'll get out of this challenge?
Hi everyone, long time no see. My name is Mi, I'm 24, and a native English speaker. I use masculine pronouns in any language I study, as well as they/them in English.
My old url used to be hangugeo-hands but I changed it because while I do still want to learn more KSL, Korean and Korean sign language aren't the only languages I want to study. I'm shifting my focus to more Spanish right now because I'm looking at a possible trip in the future! That being said, I'll still post other languages as well!
With this challenge, I hope to use it as a fun little game to really motivate me to renew this blog as I continue my studies.
This is a side blog! Any follows come from @baldyeosang
Languages Currently Studying

Languages I'd Love To Study One Day

Do Koreaboos offend or scare you? (poll down below)
It's AAPI month. And with it will inevitably come the misuse of Hangugeo, corporations prioritizing China over the rest of us, and another wave of Koreaboos simping over their favorite idol/actor.
Funsies.
Definition of koreaboo: someone who is obsessed with Korean culture so much they denounce their own culture and call themselves Korean; non-Korean person who is obsessed with Korean culture (especially K-pop or K-dramas).
Oli London is a perfect example.
The term is derived from Weeaboo, "which is used to describe a person who completely disregards their nationality and claims themselves as Japanese. Both of these terms are problematic because they insist on taking make-believe aspects of Japanese and Korean culture and making it real. Koreaboos idolize Korean life from K-Dramas and Weeaboos take from anime. Admiring only certain parts of a culture (which most of the time are completely fake) can be insulting to Korean and Japanese people." (taken from this article)
I don't think people realize how offensive they're being when they become a Koreaboo. The way I see it, it's practically fetishization of a culture. And most of the time the obsession comes from K-dramas/K-pop. I'm not saying that those things are bad, but there's a reason why I hate being associated with that part of my culture. The fangirls are getting out of hand, and there's a problem with it.
please reblog for greater sample size :)

When relying on Korean romanization:
* reading: ilkki (읽기)
* a meal: ilkki (일끼)
It's important to learn the pronunciations not the romanization equivalent of Hangeul letters.

Morgan is fluent in English, Hangugeo (Korean. I don’t know what people prefer to call it), Spanish, and he knows a little bit of Farsi
Jae hwa taught him hangugeo at a young age so Morgan spoke that and English since he was like 3. So he’s completely fluent and he can read and write in both. Anahii primarily speaks English and Spanish so that’s how Morgan picked that up as well. Considering Spanish is so common where Morgan lives he speaks it more. He understands Farsi but he can’t read Arabic nor is he completely fluent.
