Happy 2008! It’s been a while since we whetted your appetite with the first part of the blog so we thought it was time for the second instalment. Let’s face it, what more do you need to help beat the post New Year hangover than our witty ramblings?
Previously on the los camp blog… (ha, I’m really enjoying going all out over this two-parter thing!)
We supported Broken Social Scene, and the venue was rather beautiful but the fact we had to get up at half five in the morning really really sucked…
…to be continued…
…this was to fly to Japan but the airline was rubbish so it didn’t make up for it. Myself and Aleks kept getting knocked in the head by some slag of a air hostess who i found rather patronizing and the film selection was appalling. [Ellen’s still bitter her screen didn’t work properly…] However the fact we found ourselves in Japan made up for it, even if it took us four years to fly there and we lost a day or something.
Japan was a incredibly surreal and bizarre experience, we’ve heard enough stories to realize that fans there are a little excitable but I did not think this would apply to us. We were most surprised when we showed up in the hotel and there were two girls waiting to have their photo taken with us [post flight – urgh that was NOT a good time, I’m surprised they recognised us], and were also present when we returned from dinner for more photos. It was a rather humbling experience of “Our you sure you want our photo again, we are not The Enemy.”
I feel there should be a separate note about the food in Japan, we ate out for dinner the nights we were there and it was a never ending conveyor belt of food, it just kept coming and coming…. and it was so good you couldn’t not have a little bit of everything. It was not so much fun for the vegetarians amongst us due to their rather healthy obsession with fish and chicken, but luckily they had a equal obsession with Tofu. I still have no idea what the hell that is made out of. We also tried sake, and it was….kinda disgusting. [Plum wine is tasty though, and at the end you get to eat the plum; which is quite exciting…if you’re easily excitable. I am.]
We played at British Anthems with a couple of bands we like such as Blood Red Shoes and the Pipettes (who we didn’t get to see because of promo). The audiences behavior
was completely different to anything I have ever seen before, it would make a really boring anthropological study. They remained incredibly quiet between bands, all polite and courteous, and then when we started they went absolutely mental. We played in front of 2500 people (which is a lot for us) and it was one of the best gigs we have ever done. They clapped for everything, you kind of felt like you could do that thing where it looks like you were taking your thumb off and you would get a
four hour standing ovation. It was maybe the highlight of our tedious little lives. We also did a signing and got given a bag of presents including a guitar lighter (which
Tom nabbed and made into a bass) and some xmas cards. [There were also lots of requests for ‘cuddles’, and you know, any excuse to molest people and we’re there so that was quite endearing. Maybe our hugging reputation preceded us. ]
We did a meet and greet in HMV which was very bizarre, we all stood in a line and just shook peoples hands. We also gave out some more renegade hugs [even though it was against ‘HMV rules’ or something, but hey punk rock, innit] It was incredibly surreal and my hand shakes began to feel false by the end. We also went and saw The Pipettes DJ at some tiny little club which had adopted a London theme (they had flags) and Aleks was not happy with the playing of “Gotta Get Thru This” by Daniel Bedingfield. She found his sentiments insincere. [It was a low point…I think I left shortly after that. But I did get to walk through the ‘love hotel district’ on the way home which I didn’t realise at the time. No one tried it on. Ollie was luckier, he got chased down the street by a keen lady of the night. We think it’s because he has a lovely young face that women want to corrupt him.]
That whole night was like some weird indie disco wedding, it was all “Oh look its him out of the Klaxons” or “That’s the guy from The Enemy. This is weird.” Fun was mostly had by dancing to Girls Aloud. Also the guitar tech from The Enemy tried to start on Neil, we are still not too sure as to why… We also did some Karaoke with Blood Red Shoes, who sang Total Eclipse of the Heart with Gareth. Tom chose “Build me up Buttercup,” whilst myself and Neil did Weezer’s “The good Life.” Ollie indulged in Phil Collins (that self righteous one about the poor people and how we need to notice him and how he is so worthy and a idiot.) I think the finest moment was Harriet, Aleks and myself attempting “Wuthering Heights,” i think we all realized that perhaps we needed to know more then the
chorus to make the song some kind of success. But it was nice to fulfill a cliche.
We also saw various bits where Lost in Translation was filmed which the Japanese must love being asked about. [We also spent most of our days in a office doing promo. So although it sounds like we saw a lot of Tokyo, we didn’t. We mostly saw the inside of a office. We made our mark on it however with Neil leaking permanent marker on a white couch and Ellen’s spillage of pink nail varnish on a white carpet. We also got to hold those MTV news microphones, and for one photo session they put on our album and told us to dance on a table. Yep. Oh and they gave us a long pink tube to play with for one of the photo shoots which entertained us for a long time. Probably too long. You could tell they regretted giving it to us by the end.]
Overall I think we would like to go back to Japan so when people asked us what we thought of Japan we could say something more than “The toilets are electronic! They are warm when you sit on them! It’s amazing!” I hope this was not the longest most boring and pointless piece of writing you have ever read. If you have read “If no one speaks of remarkable things,” then it isn’t. Because that book sucked. This xmas Aleks is going to Russia to meet relatives and hopefully buy me things. I intend to see some musicals. Everyone else is going to enjoy some time off so we can all come back refreshed for next years tours. [we’ve gotta learn how to play those songs on the album at some point…]
we made it official! We are so happy that this incredibly amazing band which are also three great people are going to release their first 10' with us! welcome @jejeje_band into the KLr universe!
Jejeje is a Spanish onomatopoeia which stands for a skeptical mocking laughing and/or for an apologetic laugh. Jejeje is also a Berlin-based trio that combines post pop, post punk and math max rhythms with a minimalist approach.
Band members are Jordi (Parmesano, Nunofyrbeeswax, El Gos Binari), Itacate (Roto) and Zutoia (Muerte y Destrucción, Come ‘n Wait). They got together thanks to the existence of Ojalá Esté Mi Bici, a DIY music collective from Barcelona, and to a house concert of Geoff Farina (Karate) and mOck in Berlin in 2018.
Until now, they have self-released a split tape together with their friends Nunofyrbeeswax. Additionally, in December 2022 they appeared in a Xmas punk cover compilation released by Discos Pinya (Barcelona).
All three members are looking forward to the release of their first album in 2024, co-release with Repetidor.
Bamboo Girl (issue #8) is a zine by Sabrina Margarita Sandata (also known as Sabrina Margarita Alcantara-Tan), a queer mestiza Pilipino* writing about her life in 1990s New York City. The zine emphasizes Asian & Asian-American and queer experiences, containing interviews, mythology, articles, letters, and reviews. Frustrated by a lack of representation of Asian women outside of infantilizing and fetishizing magazines, Alcantara-Tan started Bamboo Girl to fill the gap and talk about her own experiences being queer, mixed, and punk. A transcription of the text is below the read more.
*The terms "mestiza" and "Pilipino" are taken from an article Alcantara-Tan wrote for Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies in 2000 describing "The Herstory of 'Bamboo Girl' Zine." You can find it on @jstor at this link.

Magandang Araw!
(That’s “Good Day!” in “You’ll-have-to-create-a-gun-to-conquer-us” Pilipino)
Since the past issue, I’ve been living bone dry, and trying to suck money out of rocks. I don’t want any violins playing in the background or anything, I’m sure things will be changing with the new year! But that’s what prolonged me to get this baby to you.
I thought I’d share that I got hitched. Yes, you stronghold dykes, to a guy. He’s a good person, and it’s an interesting lifestyle to have after being in “obvious” dykeness and queerdom beforehand (just because you get married doesn’t mean that your queerdom evaporates like water or was never there in the first place – I write more about this later, I’ll shut up about it now). The reason I introduce this is because it affects my life (duh), subsequently my writing, and has already changed my “status” within certain lesbian “pro-queer” circles. Let’s just say I’m really learning who my friends are and learning more about my own perceptions of what queer means – like, if you still are after getting married. To me, that’s a redundant question, because if you are to begin with, you still are when goin’ down that runway.
For a change, I actually didn’t mind spending the xmas holidays with my parents. It was the first time that we actually had fun while opening presents – before, it felt so superficial, such a “let’s pretend were a happy family although we really hate each other” feeling. Forcing smiles into the camera. When I was younger, I was always jealous of the “All-American family” lifestyle, where your mom is like Mrs. Cleaver, your dad plays ball with you in your backyard.
In contrast, my mom and I hated each other (we still have differences, but it’s better now) and my dad was never home. Now, older and more aware of cultural differences between how my parents brought me up vs. being in a “typical” White American household (whatever that means), I have a better idea of where my parents came from. Not to say I agreed with it, but at least I understand.
Also, for the first time, I pushed myself to interact with others at a xmas party so that people would feel better. My mom had guests over, and everyone was pretty quiet because there was really nothing to do and some of my mom’s friends were dealing with some heavily family problems. So I dragged out karaoke machine out of the basement (practically every Pinoy family had one, yes we do!) and started belting out melodies with my un-warmed-up voice. Then I had people take turns picking stuff to sing. Oh Christ, we were laughing because a good majority of us sucked.
It was funny too, being that this was the first time I was spending time in Pittsburgh as a married girl. I was expecting my mom to say to my counterpart, “go sleep in the spare room,” like she used to whenever I’d visit Pgh. with ex’s. But she didn’t this time. And I was like, “Of yeah. That’s right. I’m married now. She can’t say anything!” I laughed to myself for a while after that.
I also learned a lot about my personality while staying with my parents. I had all our Hi 8 movies, the ones my mom and dad took of my bro, sis and I, transferred to VHS. I forgot I had it done until I saw the title in our drawer and stuck it into the VCR late one night. I had my parents join my dude and I. One thing I found out was how evident peoples’ personalities are so early on in life, and how they’re not so different to how you [page 2] turn out. My baby brother was quiet and had no emotion on his face, except when he freaked out once smiling so much he drooled. In contrast, I was always aware of the camera, my playmates, hyper, active, waving, giving attitude, smiling and running around. Damn, I don’t remember being so happy at that age. Either that, or I was already aware of the “look nice” conditioning my mom was into. It was pretty funny, seeing my mom with her long ironed hair (it’s naturally curly), and my dad with his sideburns and black rimmed glasses, looking like cool Bruce Lee.
As usual, I’ve been sticking my finger into many pies, and having fun doing it…
Performance art and speaking at colleges, which is always fun – I love hanging out with college kids, they’ve got a lot on their minds, are really proactive and ask questions.
Making video shorts. My most recent one where I was taught how to set up camp at a jungle survival training course in the Philippines, led by an Aeta (the indigenous Pilipinos); this was part of my footage taken while on my trip to the Philippines in Subic (before Dick Gordon got ousted.)

Last year on my blog, we posted a full list of every Christmas anime episode known to man (well, maybe not quite...more on that below), based both on an old forum post that I think is now lost to time, and additional efforts to add missing episodes and update it.

Never watched Supernatural but wondering what all the hype is about? Then this is the post for you. If you have been on tumblr for some time or just from November 5, 2020, you may have seen a gif set or two or a hundred with destiel aka Dean and Castiel from Supernatural. @fandom even made a Destiel Is Canon post with short overview of basic facts! Are you interested but have no idea where to start? We know, we know. Life is hectic, 2020 is taxing and Supernatural has too many episodes to watch. 15 seasons and 327 episodes to be precise but who’s counting? Say no more, we got your back, fam! You don’t need to have ever watched SPN to enjoy the fics on this rec post.
For fans who have never watched SPN, some basic facts - 1x01 starts with Dean Winchester (26 yo) professional monster hunter, picking up his brother Sam (22 yo), student at Stanford, and going on a one off monster hunt. For the next 3 seasons they travel around the country in their black Impala 67 hunting monsters, saving people. Castiel, Angel of the Lord and the multidimensional wavelength of celestial intent, arrives in 4x01.The rest is shipping history. Check this 36 min YT video, The Story of Dean and Castiel by deansbansee with all the best destiel scenes from S4-15. And now, fics!
All title links go to our fully tagged reviews.
1. If you want to read fics that are set in Supernatural universe but are not canon specific, your best bet is pre season 4 (our tag) and solo hunter Dean (our tag) fics where young Dean meets Castiel differently from the show, and fics that are very loosely tied to a specific season. And, if you’ll decide to watch the show later, you still won’t be spoiled!

2. If you don’t want to bother with Supernatural canon at all, then you are still in for a treat. With 92,500 fics (December 12, 2020) and counting, destiel is currently the biggest ship on AO3. Destiel fics cover a lot of popular tropes and kinks but some are more popular than others among destiel fans. Angst, miscommunication, exploration of Dean’s low self esteem, Cas’s rusty people skills and general otherness are a staple of AU fics. But also exploration of one’s sexuality - internalized homophobia, coming out, bisexuality and asexuality are common themes.

There are so many pop culture milestone anniversaries to celebrate this month. It’s also gotten to the point where I am sharing postings I already did about the anniversary 5 years ago!?!
March 1, 1974: Get Your Wings released
Aerosmith’s second album was released in March 1974. It’s a great album with a bunch of gems, but one of the band’s finest moments is the second to last song “Seasons of Wither”! Happy 45 Get Your Wings!
March 1, 1994: Mellow Gold released
In March 1994, the third Beck album and first for DGC was released. It falls way under the radar when talking about Beck albums. Here is my piece I wrote about it on the 20th anniversary in 2014. Happy 25 Mellow Gold!
March 2, 1984: Repo Man / This is Spinal Tap open
In March 1984, two bona fide cult films were released on the same day. In Alex Cox’s sci-fi mindf**k, a young punk (Emilio Estevez) finds his way into being a repo man paired with an older jaded repo man (Harry Dean Stanton) as they are on the trail of a mysterious car. It is definitely one of the most original films of the 80s. It’s also a snapshot of the LA punk scene during that time. I saw this on video years later and dug it!
Rob Reiner directed what is easily the Mother of Mockumentary Films with this parody of music documentaries. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer put it up to 11 writing and acting (or should I say improvising) as the fictional goofy metal band. Today you see mockumentaries all the time, where it is meant to look like a documentary but its actually comic-actors improvising (Guest himself has made quite a few), but at the time, this was very groundbreaking. It is still one of the funniest movies ever made. Also one of my favorite DVD commentaries, where they do the commentary in-character. Happy 35th Repo Man AND Spinal Tap!
March 6, 2009: It’s Blitz released
In March 2009, the third album from Yeah Yeah Yeahs was released. It was interesting that this album found them going in a more synth-heavy direction but maintaining their trademark NYC art rock edge. But I love it! I named it my #1 Album of 2009. In the years that followed songs like “zero” and “heads will roll” appeared in TV shows and soundtracks more and more. Still a great album from one my favorite bands. Happy 10 It’s Blitz!
March 8, 1994: Superunknown / The Downward Spiral released
In March 1994, both Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails released epic albums on the SAME exact day. Soundgarden’s 4th studio album was released and it’s their Magnum Opus (this and Badmotorfinger). Nine Inch Nails’ 2nd studio album was released and that is their Magnum Opus (I named it my #1 Trent Reznor Album of All Time).
Read my piece I wrote about both albums in 2014 here. Happy 25th Superunkown and Downward Spiral!
March 11, 1994: The Ref opens
In March 1994, Ted Demme’s second feature film was released. His frequent collaborator Denis Leary starred in this comedy. It’s amassed a cult following and become a great anti-Xmas movie, full of sarcasm and cynicism. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 25th The Ref!
March 13, 1984: Heartbeat City released
In March 1984, the 5th album from The Cars was released. Their new wave hits were catching on by 1984, but this was possibly their best album yet. Not to mention some groundbreaking music videos too: “You Might Think”, “Drive”, “Hello” and “Magic”. When I did my V66 documentary, I was honored to have Cars keyboardist Greg Hawkes interviewed and talk about this album and their videos! Happy 35 Heartbeat City!
March 19, 2004: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind opens
In March 2004, one of the best romances of this century was released. It was the combination of director Michel Gondry’s aesthetic with a brilliant screenplay from Charlie Kaufman and a great cast. I saw it opening night in NYC and loved it. The genius in this movie is that it takes a wild idea, in this case a company that can erase your memories, and it doesn’t just rest on that wild idea, it goes above and beyond with it, in this case what if the protagonist changes his mind and tries to save his memories. Its similar to Kaufman’s other screenplays like Being John Malkovich, but so original and had something to say about romance. If you knew it would end, would you be with that person anyways? So much to love about this movie...if only I could remember... Happy 15 Eternal Sunshine!
March 30, 2004: Honkin’ on the Bobo released
In March 2004 Aerosmith’s 14th album was released. Funny that we start and end March with Aero-versarries. Majority of the album was blues covers, with one original. Kinda cool that they did an all-blues album at that point in their career. Happy 15th Bobo!
March 31, 1989: Heathers opens (in the U.S.)
In March 1989, the clever dark edgy teen comedy Heathers was released in the U.S. (it opened in Europe in 1988). Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 30th Heathers!
raise a glass and have a cheer / for us all who have gathered here / and a happy new year to all that is living / to all that is gentle, kind, and forgiving
Sick of all the same Christmas songs every year?
Not feeling the standard holiday cheer with the Orange One in the Oval Office?
This mix is for you.

Editor’s Note
I’ve always been a purist about my Christmas music. Gimme the original wistful/dreamy 30s/40s jazz standards from Nat, Bing, Dean, Frank, Judy, Ella, and Louis in early December and choir caroles from Christmas Eve to New Year’s.
However, in the era of the Orange One, these suddenly weren’t working for me. I needed a Christmas mix with an edge. Something to remind you things are not fuckin okay but we’re putting in the work to fight it every day anyway.
One year later and still all I want for Christmas is the Orange One in fisticuffs. Absent that, this mix keeps me going during the holidays.
Inspired partly by Stranger Things 80s vibes and partly by songs from the first Gilmore Girls Christmas episode that aired 18 years ago, this is almost 3 hours of original, unique, or retro holiday songs. While there’s some modern classics, I looked far and wide for unknowns, so some of these are deep tracks.
So grab a cup of your favorite hot drink and press play for some chill on this holiday.
tear these thorns from my heart / help the healing start / let’s set this old world free
The HS/College Rent AU I Came Up With While Writing the Last Post
We’re just gonna refer to it as ‘the school’ b/c I can’t see a hs actually doing rent????? at least not in my old school district. This definitely didn’t come about because I’m wearing out my musical playlist on Spotify again what do you meannnnnnn anyone into the headcannon that is already becoming a fic that I’m definitely starting.....
NOTE : I just wanted to say first off I know that Tom Collins is typically played by an African American, and Angel by a Latino. However I’ve seen productions without these specifications, but this hc/fic is by no means meant to erase any character’s ethnicity, it’s just for the sanders sides hc/fic.
Roman
freshman,
red hair dye. kinda like jacksepticeye’s old haircut but red
soooo pissed he didn’t get Roger or Mark
in fact Mark is being played by a female??????
schools never has enough males for the parts they need
the only other option would’ve been giving Angel to a female, and the director did not want to send that message
which Roman kinda gets
And as Lo explained his father (the director) didn't give leads to freshmen
so he could consider himself lucky he even got Collins
*smart logan voice* who is only in 3 or 4 less songs than Mark or Roger, because Roger has one more song than Mark,
roman’s face definitely doesn’t do the little ‘aw’ (like seeing virge in his xmas sweater) when he realizes his best friend like counted them out to know that
(b.c even tho logan wouldn’t tell him he totally thinks romans deserved roger or mark too)
he and logan go way back, like middle school. roman’s always at the sanders house like every other day because his parents just yell at him for every little thing even if his brother started it
Collins couldn’t be too bad, he could finally play in a gay relationship on stage,
and he’d be able to show off his lower voice range bc most of his other parts were leads and most male leads are tenors
so offended princey aside, Roman Prince is so ready to knock this role out of the park
and he walks in first rehearsal and the Angel they cast causes his little gay heart to almost combust on sight
Patton
freshman as well, new to school with his little brother
“pat, you’re ten minutes older than me”
“still older, virge” (frustrated virgil noises)
doesn’t really like acting, he gets kinda emotional when things are sad but then sometimes forgets to not smile in the middle of a fighting scene, patton
this boy can SING tho
like his tenor is good and all
but THIS MAN’S FALSETTO
soooo of course Thom-er Mr. Sanders cast him as Angel
he’s just so delightful!
he comes into first rehearsal in this cute blue dress and totally doesn’t notice Virgil watching from the last row,
but he can’t focus on that because LOOK AT THAT CUTE GUY SITTING ALL BY HIMSELF
makes a lot of ‘friends’ with everybody but when nobody jumps at the idea of a groupchat or to hang out this weekend he’s totally not sad what do you mean virgil!
and they’re both ready to wait outside for their parents who are super supportive and give them lots of free reign because they’re kinda never there but that’s ok!
but then the cute guy that patton sat like two feet from the entire rehearsal bc he looked lonely comes over and is like ‘I'm not cool or anything but we’re gonna be in a lot of scenes together so if you wanted to, i’d love to hang’
and patton’s heart does the EHEHEH thing, and virgil has to do the *shoulder push* to get patton to give him his number
Virgil
needs to protect his big brother
bc this is a new school and who knows what bullies will be lurking to try and try to ruin his brother’s big heart
didn’t want to take a music class bc he likes to listening to music but he’d rather just listen or draw
then mr sanders, head of the arts dept. catches him watching the first rehearsal
mr. sanders says he has to do something to satisfy the music credit and oh hey my musical is looking for a piano player
fine, virgil spits out, but lowkey glad bc he likes piano he just doesn’t like somebody telling him how to do it and ruining it
but as he’s given the sheet music he just goes ballistic, the fast tempos are oddly relaxing, and the rock feeling just soothes him
so he thinks ah this won’t be too bad
and he walks in to the second rehearsal, and he’s watching his brother kinda twirl on the stage just a few minutes before it’s supposed to start
and he notices that other freshman, Roderick? Ramen? Roman? come in and standing next to him is the hottest nerd he’s ever seen
and that nerd plops down next to mr sanders whose just getting there and mumbles a ‘hey dad’ but virgil catches it
and oh god he’s fucked, he thinks to himself as he stares at the keys for the rest of the rehearsal
Deceit
is stage manager
just wants to go home
and is a sophomore but hangs out with freshman, just not in the arts dept.
but he watches this horrifically adorable freshman in a dress try to talk to a junior and he thinks, oh god these kids are gonna get eaten alive
sassy af
no i have not seen your prop that is definitely not on the table you just walked by three times without checking Jessica
is always hanging upside down?
.like you’re just like ‘Deceit where are you there’s a prop malfunction?’
‘oh yay’ and then he’s doing a backflip off the railing of the pulley system
comforting when needs to be bc some actors need love while others need a stick up their as-
DECIET LANGUAGE! yeah like that one. that one needs love.
“i fucked up my line, deceit!” “no one probably even noticed!”
“my hair is a mess” “no it’s not its fine”
makes his assit. stage manag. do dumb tasks like polish the piano keys bc “i can handle it myself”
he can’t
gets stressed but ‘i’m fine, where’s our mimi, light my candle is starting’
Logan
son of the director, Thomas Sanders
went to audition for the musical to support roman but he heard one comment about getting in bc of his dad and he dipped
told his dad he just wasn’t one for that stuff and was only doing it for roman
tried to ignore the disappointed look in his dad’s eyes even when Thomas was smiling
asked him to be dramaturg instead
mildly happy Thomas and Logan shared smile
sits by his dad first rehearsal,
watches roman,
hides his smile at roman’s first read through already being in character
groans as he listens to roman talk about the cute boy’s number he got
comes into rehearsal the next time and stops bc THE PIANO GUY
*windows error noise*
slaps roman’s arm a bunch of times
roman asks him what, and logan can just kinda point in virgil’s direction
and while logan goes home that night and compiles a very detailed powerpoint as to why his dad should let him be assistant stage manager
conveniently leaving out how the assistant works with the pit
roman goes home and compiles everything he could ever possibly find on virgil foster
and omg he’s patton’s brother what?
how could anyone tell under all that purple hair dye???
and he definitely doesn’t send mr sanders a texts
YOUR SON’S GOT A CRUSH MAKE HIM AS.ST.MAN.AHHH
roman is practically logan’s brother so Thomas is just like ok son
but Thomas makes logan give his case first
and then says ‘fine but you gotta do what deceit says’
and logan’s like well shit if imma die might as well do it looking at the cutest punk ever
next rehearsal he’s just like hello i am new assistant stage manager
and virgil looks him up and down and just goes ‘cute’
and virgil is dying on the inside but logan doesn’t know that
all he sees is that sauve boy making him windows error noise
At the stroke of midnight on Dec 25th all Christmas themed programs and movies become useless, redundant.. and, in alot of cases, even stupid.
Because, honestly, Peace and Joy and all those other warm fuzzy feelings we wear like ugly Christmas sweaters, are the first things we pack up and store away. At the stroke of midnight, on Dec 25th ‘Good Will Towards Man’ becomes awkward, and embarrassing.
The lights and the tree and all the other outward trimmings usually make it until the New Year, but to watch “It’s A Wonderful Life” or “A Christmas Carol” on Dec 28th is pretty much always gonna be a hollow experience.
Again, that’s because, after Dec 25th everything starts shifting from ‘merry’ to ‘happy.’ It’s that in between period, as we’re coming off the sugar rush of Christmas Day (treats and liquor) while preparing for the sugar rush of New Year’s Eve (liquor and treats), when we feel sluggish and maybe even a bit guilty.
So it only follows that trying to find satisfying television entertainment during that time can be difficult, as well. We’re tired of the fluffy stuff, but too logy for anything that might provoke much thought.
It’s these kinda doldrums that causes us to pick up the clicker and play...
REMOTE ROULETTE!
How To Play: Close eyes, click randomly through the apps on the screen until someone says stop. Then open that app. Close eyes again and click through that app until someone, again, says stop.
Then watch what ever was landed upon. (Unless it’s something you’ve seen, or something truly awful like Best of Duck Dynasty.)
We landed (via Prime) on...
Kin-Dza-Dza (1986 Russian, English subtitles) A surreal little science fiction film made during the glasnost years. It promotes equality and tolerance and is probably banned, in Russia, these days.
I also found it odd that the two main characters looked (and even acted a bit like) John Cleese and Peter Lorie. Which made it even that much more surreal.
The bulk of the story takes place on a planet called Pluke. It’s an arid, and sparsely populated place, with steam punk overtones. ‘Koo’ is the only word in the Pluke language.. unless you count swear words, in which case there are 2 words. ‘Kyou’ (fuck you?) is the curse word.
They used it often.
It was a sweet and thoughtful little Russian flick, which was probably the most surreal thing about it.
And then the mail was delivered..
Killing Eve (via Netflix DVDs)
We watched the last 4 eps of season 1.
What a wonderful program. I only hope season 2 will be as good.
Killing Eve pretty much took us to the new year, though we did squeeze in one other film
The Death of Stalin (2017)
Alternate history at it’s most brilliant.
It’s funny because it’s Stalin.
*******************************************************************************************
hmmm.. it wasn’t until just now, as I was pouring a vodka and getting ready to post this, that I noticed the Russian theme that seems to run through it.
And to think, it all started with an innocent game of Remote Roulette.
