I wanted to ask what you mean by this? "It takes some liberties with filler, and makes a few subtle changes with big fallout in terms of Guts leaving the Hawks imo (ie removing the inherent criticism and portraying it as necessary, which changes the central theme of the story lol)" What do you mean the 97 anime removes inherent criticism for Guts leaving the hawks and portrays it as necessary? I don't get what you're saying at all so I'd appreciate an explanation.

lol sorry, I breezed right over that because I've talked about it before and I have a tendency to forget that no one's read everything I've ever posted.

So basically

a) Guts leaving the Hawks was a Bad Decision in the manga. If you don't agree then this requires an essay behind it, so voila, here's that essay.

b) The anime portrayed it as a Good Decision for Guts, something he needed to do in pursuit of a noble, worthwhile goal.

The anime does this by changing a few key moments. One obvious one I always cite is the scene at Godo's, when Guts does his waterfall log exercise. In the manga this scene occurs in flashback after Wyald knocks him unconscious. Erika tells Guts he's going to die if he continues on the path he's going, and asks why tf he's doing this to himself. Guts basically says he has to get strong enough to defeat Zodd. End scene.

This contextualizes Guts' dream of sword swinging as an irrational need to defeat the guy who beat him. His goal is to fight Zodd again and win. Symbolically, due to the similar imagery they have in Guts' various nightmares and the essential themes of the story, Guts is driven to self-destructively fight monsters because of his csa trauma.

The anime, conversely, turns this moment into the first part of a training montage, dumps the conversation about fighting Zodd, and ends with Guts successfully slicing logs in half, signifying that he's now Strong Enough. It flattens all the nuance and implicit criticism of Guts out and turns it into a typical inspirational shounen moment.

There's also the Guts/Casca sex scene changing from two traumatized and miserable people hooking up ("licking wounds") into a much more cliched and straightforward romantic moment (using Guts' theme as a music cue, cutting out the choking and rape flashbacks and denial ("Don't think about those things right now,") swapping "I don't know if you'll get in the way of what I want to do or the opposite, but I wanna have you a hundred, no a thousand times" with "I don't know what the future will bring, all I know is I want to keep holding you," etc). All this adds up to Guts wanting to leave again with Casca being framed as the happily ever after that got foiled by the Eclipse, rather than part of the bad decision pile up that caused the Eclipse.

Cutting out the night after Guts leaves is another big one, removing Guts reflecting on whether he's making the right decision or whether he's throwing away a home and family based on a meaningless ideal that he can't even fulfill because it's a contradiction ("In the first place I got this idea in my head from hearing Griffith's words. If I hadn't... so can I say I've set out by my own will?") Spoiler alert, it's the second one. This theme is reinforced during the Lost Children Arc, so while it's not the anime's fault it cuts off abruptly, losing most of the Black Swordsman stuff also doesn't help.

The loss of the Wyald sequence in general cuts out so much implicative Guts character stuff - the irrationally driven to fight monsters due to trauma thing I mentioned earlier, but also Casca crying about it indicating that she would not be supportive of his goal if they did go off together, the self-destructiveness of Guts' monster hunting, and the parallels between Guts and Wyald (ie the other Hawks wondering if Guts is human, Wyald's forces being called the Black Dogs).

Even little tiny things like Guts telling Casca to stay back in the torture chamber, phrased as though he wants to spare her the sight of Griffith, rather than like he's irrationally guarding Griffith from anyone's approach, as is the manga vibe:

I don't think these changes are exactly intentional. I think they're mainly for pacing/content reasons - Guts stay at Godo's needed to be fleshed out because now it's half an episode, Guts' rape trauma is cut out so the Guts/Casca scene becomes less complicated, Skull Knight got cut so no long dark night of regretful contemplation, the Wyald sequence is a nightmare of pacing that had to be cut lol, etc. But they all add up to a Guts who is less flawed, less driven by trauma, and more driven by a noble, shounen-esque goal to be the best. It simplifies the story a lot imo, and downplays a lot of what makes Guts' narrative interesting to me.

I love thinking about everyone coming back to Hawkins eventually

Steve is the Middle School guidance councillor (Mr. Clarke is now the principal) Robin is the High School guidance counsellor and runs the school's gay/straight alliance. The two of them went to the same college, they just can’t stop looking out for other kids going through rough times.

Will is not only a fantastic artist but a wonderful storyteller. he gets a degree in English literature and he does a few art classes to be the best he can be and he turns his stories into graphic novels that he illustrates himself. The Stranger Things series is published through scholastic and in libraries all over the country, he gets fan mail from other weird kids who found solace in the stories, he does book signings and he takes photos with groups of friends that formed over the love of HIS book and it makes everything worth it. with the success of the book he can move anywhere he wants to, but he just buys a nice big house in Hawkins with enough space for anyone in the party to stay when they visit. and Joyce lives with him too, she takes care of the house when he's out on book tours and talk shows and she's so, so proud of him.

El was able to get into an adult education program and catch up to a grade 12 education by the time she’s 23. After that she goes to college, she gets a degree in early childhood education and she works in the elementary school as an EA for special needs children. Now she runs the special needs program at both Hawkins middle and high and her office is right beside Steve’s.

Dustin originally goes to school for engineering but gets sidetracked when he meets some people in the radio and communications courses. He ends up switching over and getting his degree in television broadcasting. Now he's Dustin Henderson head news correspondent for HAWK Channel 7 News, he does the 6 and 11 o'clock news, and his voice fills the homes of Hawkins residents for many years

Erika goes to college and gets a degree in political science and comes back to run for mayor of Hawkins and she wins. she’s the mayor for a long time until she decides to run for governor. And then president.

Jonathan is so burnt out from everything and the trauma of it all that he doesn't do anything big for a while. He works odd jobs, he gets hired for some prom photos and then some engagement photos and then the same couple comes to him a year later for their baby's newborn photos and that's where his career starts. He makes business cards, he gets a business loan and rents out a building downtown and he opens a photography studio. He's Erika's campaign photographer, Steve and Robin get him a contract with the school for grad photos, and he loves it.

Argyle befriends Keith whose parents own both the arcade and family video and he convinces them to open up a Surfer Boy Pizza branch in Hawkins to go with their games and movies... and now He's the manager of said Surfer Boy Pizza and living his best life.

Max is a doctor at the hospital. When she was in recovery, she got bored just sitting in her room in her wheelchair so she asked to help out. They let her do rounds and learn what a nurse did every day which helped her get up and start walking again… and she ended up loving every second of it. She went back to high school after that and took every science course she could, she went to college on a scholarship and she came back to Hawkins Memorial hospital as soon as she could. Now she's head of trauma surgery in the ER.

Nancy comes back to Hawkins in the 2000s after years of being a big city cop in Indianapolis for many years, ready to take over as the Hawkins Chief of Police when Hopper retires.

Much like Nancy, Mike also works with the Hawkins police. He is a social worker who relocates children during an emergency. If a couple passes away in a car accident, a domestic dispute, or anything, Mr. Wheeler is called in to talk to the kids, make sure they're okay and drive them to their Foster parent or next of kin. It's a very hard job to do but he has experience with finding kids on the worst night of their life and making sure they're taken care of.

Lucas doesn't know what he wants to do for a while. he takes a basketball scholarship to a really good college somewhere far away and he thinks he'll find himself there... and he's right. he gets hurt in his 3rd game and benched until he's better, causing him to spend a decent amount of time with the team's physical therapist. he remembers when max was in recovery and how he liked to help her and so he switches his major to Kinesiology and he becomes an occupational therapist for people with chronic illnesses and severe disabilities. he moves back to Hawkins when Erika gets elected, the town a lot different and there's a large number of veterans in the area too since the war, she convinces him to move back and open a care facility, cause no one understands Vets better than someone who's been on the front lines himself.

Eddie tours around as a guitarist for some solo artists for a few years and then comes back to Hawkins to set up a music store where he does guitar lessons for kids after school.

The many Skulls of the Lurid Crypt

I am one of the overseers (players) of this succession fortress organized by @dorfposting And I succeeded the Dwarf from @impossiblepackage first, then @jv to finally me. Here is my story of Ërtongnòm - Gerbilgod

First of Granite, year 152 in the fortress Ërtongnòm: Gerbilgod

After stumbling along searching for my mountain-home, I, overseer Erika, daughter of Hawks, found the fabled Ërtongnòm.

Two things about the fortress that caught my immediate attention was the impressive stockpile of foodstuff. A good abundance to ensure our citizens are well-fed. The other thing was the smell however…

Understanding the discomfort miasma would bring to a fortress, and with discomfort brings temper tantrums, I instructed our miners, the Dwarves Ber and Mistêm, to dig out the dumping pit a little deeper. A crude solution, but one that will suffice until magma becomes our servant.

And in ensuring that refuse and other garbage is to be dumped, I ordered the Dwarf Besmar Närèrith, our fisherdwarf, to specialize in trash collecting so that the only labor they are concerned about, other than fishing, is to ensure our fortress’ stink does not sicken us all. Then I asked Goden Shedlok the Herbalist to specialize hauling food, so that our carefully prepared meals do not go to spoil and spoil all of our moods.

Hopefully, the Dwarves’ other labors do not hinder their new found responsibilities too much.

11’th of Granite

An Elven caravan had just arrived on the morning. They didn’t carry too much, nor was anything too valuable, save the fruits, vegetables and nuts. I felt that the necessary course of action was to simply ignore our nature-protector friends. Afterall, our stockpiles are more than sufficient.

We would find better trading partners later in the year, I’m sure of it.

25’Th of Granite

Looking at the state of the Dwarven Bunks, I decided the best course of action, while the fortress was cleaning up, was to set up personal furniture for the dwarves, so they may have personal coffers to hang up their clothing or other objects of subjective value.

I have the dwarves use the available shale to set up these stone workshops, one will focus production on cabinets, the other on coffers, and the final one on doors.

With the abundance of Rock Salt, and my reluctance to use economic stone for anything other than steel production, I ordered the furniture to be made of rock salt. Not the best material in my not so humble opinion, but us Dwarves make do with what we got. Perhaps when we have more migrants come in, be it this year or the next, we may assign them masons to work specifically on these tasks. But for now, this is work available for anyone.

6’th of Slate

Besmar has been spotted working on refuse removal, yet, most times I spot her praying fervently to her Gods, meditating on their spheres of influence. Though I am not one to get in the way of others’ personal beliefs, I find her lack of work disturbing. Had I any extra laborers, surely this would be no issue, but I must rely on her solely to dump refuse without sacrificing the other Dwarves’ work.

I am happy to report that no complaints of miasma have been announced by any of the Dwarves. So at least we have that.

21’st of Slate

I spoke too soon about the Miasma situation, I turned a corner to check on the bunks, and I find the purple clouds of miasma torturing the animals. The remains of Crundles continue to rot as our dumper continues to pray.

1st of Felsite

Ask and ye shall receive. Migrants have arrived.

Now our humble fortress of 28 (including monster hunters) is boosted to a modest 59

More children arrived with their parents. Which means more haulers, which hopefully means more refuse dumping.

Now a new task was set forth, to house all these new workers, for our glorious fortress.

At Elevation Level: (-7) going downwards, I set up mining orders to rapidly set up new housing for the Dwarves as well as any bunks for future migrant waves.

11’th of Felsite

Let it be known, on this day, the farmers of Ërtongnòm have petitioned for a guildhall for the Farmer’s Guild named: “The Guild of Meadows”

In other news, I have switched the children’s chores away from most hauling activity to refuse hauling, in order to better streamline the sanitation process of the fortress. There are poor moods across the board so I hope the construction of the guild will help build the morale of the citizens.

I felt that in honor of a Dwarven Farmer’s Guild, the Hall itself could resemble that of a Plump Helmet. When the final touches of the fortress have been completed (Dug out, smoothed, with some furnishing), we will boast our finished product for all to see (on Tumblr).

22’nd of Felsite

May Lumnum, God of The Stars and Freedom, watch over us. A fearsome beast approaches.

The Worst of these troubles: we only just noticed this beast towards our gate (Because I was only notified as it transformed near our entrance). I pray that the monster hunters, with the aid of our cage traps, can defeat this creature before any of our citizens die, or worse, become infected.

I haphazardly set up a burrow called the Panic Room in the Oily Chestnut and a small space where the lever is so that a dwarf may press it before the monster can invade… hopefully.

23’rd of Felsite

Our Prayers are answered, Stinthäd Melbilastel, the were-lizard (and not a citizen btw) has worn off her transformation. Which now gives us ample ability to destroy her. Though I pity her and her curse, I cannot allow such a threat to exist near our fortress endangering our proud citizens and those lazy monster hunters who did nothing. I organized a small militia of Dwarves to deal with this threat. Even though we had no military equipment, we at least had numbers. Finally, with no casualty to us (no injuries or deaths) we walk off in mourning of this poor soul. The least we could do is engrave a slab in memoriam.

26’th of Felsite

I would like to personally congratulate comrade ‘jv’ for their victory in the fortress elections. You represent the will of the people, may you lead us to glory!

By the gods’ very flame, one of our children has been afflicted with a strange mood! I eagerly await the artifact young Urdim Cilobrulush will create!

They claimed one of the Craftdwarf workshops on the main floor, and has been seen hauling giant mole bones to their shop.

Five Days Later…

Finally, I turned my attention towards the merchants, and decided against purchasing any foods or such, but did trade for some leathers in bins. Having leather fashioned into cloaks, I believe, would give our military dwarves some extra protection.

3’rd of Malachite

A little outside the Tavern is the entranceway to the housing facilities for our Dwarves. Mud marks the path forward and I found it appropriate to till out some farm plots for more cavern diet variety. It completely slipped my mind to build additional bunks for so many new Dwarves. So I immediately worked to remedy that. I also started to commission more furnishing for our veteran Dwarves, the dwarves that were here before the wave. Though fortress life is hard, a comfort here and there can make it all worth it.

15’th of Malachite

The worshippers of Lumnum, who band together as “The Tenebrous Order,” have requested for the construction of a temple in service to the God of The Stars and Freedom. A small temple, humble and non-obstructive to our time, could be arranged. Though I’m not too religious myself, I recognize the faith of the people in their gods, and I hope morale could be raised by this new holy site. Very well my Dwarves, construction is underway.

Because Lumnum is the God of The Stars as well as Freedom, I thought the best way to honor that sphere of influence was to design the temple in the shape of a five-pronged star. I’ll commision some statues of copper in the image of Lumnum to decorate the temple.

11’th of Galena

And now we find ourselves with yet another uninvited guest to our territory. Mostly unarmored Dwarves position themselves behind the drawbridge, and I bring the monster hunters out of their comfort zone to help defend our fortress. Our soldiers, due to the armor not yet being fully forged, are mostly unprotected, with only Hammers to keep them safe.

I lead our Dwarves onwards to battle. Unfortunately, not every Dwarf had heard the call to the Tavern and several children were playing in the mud outside. So, bravely, I led our soldiers to dispose of this garbage, and swiftly, the threat was taken care of, with only one fatality.

Unfortunately, one of our soldiers, young Mörul Likottorad was lost during the conflict. We know not their whereabouts, but we assume the worst. Due to the missing nature of the body, we will engrave a memorial slab in her honor. Go to the ancestors lost hero, your struggles are over.

Haphazardly, I arranged for a hospital to be built on the main floor. Though our casualties were minimal, some Dwarves, like our siege operator Kulet Alisbesmer, had sustained some injuries, they for example had lost their ability to stand. We will need to commission some crutches, and our Chief Medical Dwarf (CMD) will need to treat their wounds.

1st of LimeStone

Now, don’t ask me how, but Kulet seems to have gotten better with minimal input. She wasn’t even on her last legs, she could barely stand, now here she is, working as if nothing traumatic happened. Ah well, Dwarves are just built differently. Construction of the Hospital is going well enough, we have some beds, a coffer to store our medical supplies, and I am building a Soap Maker’s Workshop inside the hospital so we may be able to clean wounds in the future. This really should’ve been something I built first, but better late than never. Across the Hospital, where the training barracks are, I am constructing a Bedroom, an Office/Dining Hall, and a set of prisons for the new Captain of the Guard, Minkot Datantoral/Ironlaw (I mean come on, with a name like that, why not?!). I also realized the mayor JV needed some extra effort into their living standards, being mayor and all. And why not, surely ImpossiblePackaged, for their labors as overseer, requires a new living standard.

4th of Limestone

More child snatchers arrived, they ran away just as quickly. I pray for peace, my Dwarves have seen enough action.

14’th of Limestone

A Caravan from Litast Likot has arrived to Ërtongnòm. I seem to be getting what I want in terms of peace. So far, things have been relatively peaceful. The problem, I’ve been skimping out on the Fortress’s trade goods production, so as a result, we’re not trading for anything. Shameful, I’m aware, but with the formation of a militia, threats arriving to the fortress and trying to specialize workers into other industries I deemed important for the time, it just slipped my mind.

15’th of Limestone

A day later and the liaison offers us a barony. Though my thoughts on the nobility are less than flattering, I recognize this is a huge prestige for us Dwarves. So, in honor of their labors in guiding us to this mountain home, I felt it necessary to award comrade ImpossiblePackaged the title of Baron. Glory to our eternal fortress! For my successor, i ordered us some subterranean plant seeds and spawn as well as extra logs for bed production. Make use of this as you will, honored overseer. They want, in return, bracelets, and are offering a 196% increase to purchase any the next time they visit. I’ll commission some bracelets for the fortress and encrust them with gemstones. The future looks bright for us. Glory to the Future!

21’st of Limestone

So, for reasons beyond my comprehension, it did not occur to me to check the finished goods bins for trade goods. Fortunately, the liaison has not left us, so I sent our broker to trade. After considerable trading, and feeling a little ripped off, I bought the fortress additional provisions to ensure its survival. I also purchased bins of different cloths and bags of seeds and spawns. We can craft more goods to replenish our loss and use the new silks/yarn-cloth/plant-cloth/leather to dress our citizens into something fresher.

18’th of Sandstone

It’s been an uneventful Autumn as of yet. A long while ago when constructing the trash pit, we ran into some semi-molten rock. This could indicate magma below. Right now, coke is becoming a rarity, so magma forges and smelters could be very helpful to us economically necessary. The magma sea was discovered, now to figure out pumps, or move metalsmithing operations downwards. This also means our dumping pit for trash no longer will emit a smell, because the magma will burn it all! So long miasma, you purple cloud of anxiety!

22nd of Sandstone

This is so far what I have for the new magma workshops that will mostly replace our need for refined coke. After the workshops are dug out with storage space, we’ll begin actually channeling into the sea for the forges and smelters. I did see some magma snakes and other nasties, hopefully this won’t present itself as too much of a problem, I may consider putting guard detail down to these depths.

23rd of Sandstone, or as I like to call it, as soon as I unpaused the game:

Made of water, no wonder you were forgotten. Although such an announcement scared me, I realized there was no real way for the monster to enter the fortress properly. It’s in the caverns, we have traps set up for this beast, and it’s made of water. I’ll set up a guard post with our war dog, but I think the monster hunters in the tavern are more than enough.

1st of Timber

The great big ball of agua fled. Kinda hoping for a fight, but this is probably for the best. At least this means nobody dies. The miners continue to dig deep into the depths of this world. I am eager for some metal bars into our workers’ hands. We also just received a new migrant wave pushing our population from 69 to 77. We deconstructed the upstairs Metal Forges and Smelters. The anvils will be relocated to the lower levels and housing for our smiths will be located near the workshops. And then move the storages near there as well. Because the steel industry still needs carbon in order to forge steel, coke will still be located by the smelters.

10th of Timber

Do you think Armok hides in heaven because they too are far too tired to deal with all this? Our Dwarves do not like listening to burrow orders, so my only solution is to send soldiers to throw themselves at the enemy in order to deal with threats. Here’s hoping we don’t make more engraved slabs.

13th of Timber

No deaths!!! The giantess Istrath Absamistrath Muraktesum is dead by the hands of Mebzuth Athelilrom, the killer of the cyclops invader that resulted in the death of another Dwarf in the months prior. Truly, the title of Hero of Ërtongnòm is earned here.

26th of Timber

I dug out the forge shops and this thing came out of the rock. WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!?!?! We are going to lose miners and gain some coffins and slabs. I have the soldiers guard a hallway that leads to the rest of the fortress so that the soldiers can regroup and not take this thing one at a time.

1st of Moonstone

There are so many casualties. That THING charged the blokade and killed seven soldiers (Including Mebzuth) and ten civilians. I ordered the Dwarves to wall off the forges. A vile siege of darkness has arrived to Ërtongnòm. Goblins charge the gates. The Gates are closing, whoever is outside is just going to have to fend for themselves, because we absolutely cannot defend ourselves. After more dwarves threw themselves to kill the fiend, thus killing themselves, the thing finally died, but we are out of soldiers. A vile force of Darkness has arrived. We have no soldiers, our workforce was cut by 27% and the winter has only just begun. The gates are closed. Armok save them, because I cannot.

16th of Moonstone

The baron, ImpossiblePackaged, was injured during the fight in their fight against Skullscrypt the Lurid, that maroon fiend that slaughtered much of our citizens. Though they killed the beast, they are left in critical condition that has already been patched up, and sutured. The only task left to do is to clean them up, lest they die of infection. A statue in honor of the death of the Lurid will be erected of course, but it will be a somber moment. Too many lives were lost thanks to that death machine.

19th of Moonstone

I’m not sure which of the Gods I’ve angered, but I'm going to assume I did something serious. This must be the third Forgotten Beast that has visited our fortress. We still haven’t been able to rebuild our militia, so I think it’s best to simply keep the gates closed, and never venture out into the wild.

20th of Moonstone

It got into the fortress. It came from the caverns and attacked our war dog first, then it set off our many stone traps. In a miraculous turn of events, it fell into the entrance of the garbage pit. A small hallway that is inaccessible to the rest of the fortress. So now we have a pet monster that I hope starves to death. In any case, I need to replace that dog. It served us well and will be remembered.

7th of Opal

Some Good news…finally. Likot Idudos, our mechanic, has entered a strange mood and is gathering goods for their latest artifact. I am excited about what new goody we may yet receive!

12th of Opal

Our Newest artifact! Though I would’ve preferred the creation of armor or a weapon, this artifact will truly be a delight to display around the fortress. Perhaps I’ll set it up in the guildhall or the temple, and allow those buildings to finally be complete.

4th of Obsidian

As I realize my tenure as overseer draws to a close, I look back at my progress here in the fortress of Gerbilgod. Could I have done better? I came here smelling the miasma, hoping to clean it. Then the migrants came to help, then the monster came to feed. We have no more coal to refine into coke, and thus, an end to our metal industry. To try to substitute, I awoken the slumber of a beast best left forgotten. My Dwarves, oh my precious Dwarves, will you ever forgive me? The gates remain closed. Perhaps the next overseer will find success in my downward descent into madness. I truly hope so, for the sake of Ërtongnòm. The previous overseers built great foundations for wealth, but the outside world proved too hostile, too greedy. To any overseer who wishes to avenge our people, build up our strength, destroy the beasts in our fortress and prove to all the glory of Ërtongnòm! My final message to you all: bring us Glory!

first of all, shes far sighted and wear glasses

but only at the estate-- does she wears it--

before that, she used to rely on bethany for reading-- paperworks, dealings, and such for the smuggler.

but after she was taken away to the kirkwall circle, erika tried to read on her own. she was still frustrated at herself for not keeping a eye on bethany and then- it lasted short-lived-- why? bodahn, sweet kind dwarf, noticed her struggle and suggests gently ‘ Messere, may i suggest that you to acquire spectacles?’

‘ah, no, bodahn, i dont need it, it’s seems not worth it.’ erika frowns, but her eyes are glue to the papers.

“thanks, merrill, i hope it grows on me.”

anders? chuckles and raise a eyebrow “well, that explained why you were glaring at the manifesto i shown it to you one point.”

“...is this why people gave me odd looks??????”

fenris? goes ‘huh’ and shrugs. “well, you did have good taste in books, so i assumed you have reading spectacles, not that i didnt meant to offend you, but you know what i meant.”

“...thank you, fenris.”

aveline? barks a laugh, and shakes her head going “well, color me surprised! that explained why you asked bethany to read some aloud--”

“aveline!”

isabela? whistles and tilt her head “ohhhh hawke and spectacles, something i never thought to see! hmm, very attractive, huh?”

“bela!”

Thoughts on C3E47 (SPOILERS AHOY)

So last night’s episode dropped a clanger of a callback lore bomb on us, which apparently NONE of the players openly caught (or if they did, I missed it, but Liam is usually the one that’s right on the ball for this and I always watch him like a hawk during lore reveals and I don’t think he openly clocked it).

The person that Otohan Thull is talking to in the keep was not originally identified, but he did mention the name “Sammanar”, which immediately rang bells in my mind that I knew I’d heard this name before.

Then as they’re fleeing the keep and this person returns on Gloamglut, he bellows out the name “SORROWLORD ZADUTHA”, and if I still had a voice left (COVID has me hacking my lungs out), I was ready to YELL at my monitor, “I FUCKING KNEW IT.”

Flashback to Episode 26 while the gang was in Bassuras, and that mysterious mental call that Dusk (later revealed to be Yu Suffiad) has with their master...

“Sorrowlord Zathuda, Bearer of the Lightless Flame and Grove Captain of the Unseelie Court.“

THEY ARE ABOUT TO GO HEAD TO HEAD WITH YU’S BOSS, AND THEY HAVE AN UNCONSCIOUS FEARNE WITH THEM!

Is anyone else openly wondering if Erika is going to make a re-appearance at the table next week?! (Or if Matt will end up Jaeger-ing Yu?) And if so... what will they do?!

Related to this... at first I briefly wondered if “Sammanar” might be a reference to Ludinus himself, but that was quickly discarded since the conversation seemed to imply that”Sammanar” and Ludinus are two separate individuals. Maybe “Sammanar” is their word for Predathos? Or it may still be someone else we’re unaware of...

some fascinating stuff these last couple of episodes including

1. obviously Hawkeye and Trapper’s outfits in Five o’clock Charlie with accompanying shitty upperclass English dandy accents

2. this iconic moment

3. Sid’s introduction in Radar’s Report, which! look the first time I was watching this through I didn’t know he’d be a recurring character! I wasn’t thinking too hard about him until around Hawk’s Nightmare in s5! But this time I can read so much more into how he’s introduced! The mild disdain he has for coming to the 4077th (oh how his tune will change), the somewhat bitchy up and down he gives Klinger, as if he’s seen a million queer femmes in his lifetime and this ain’t something special, this:

Stating the reality of Klinger submitting himself as a transvestite and homosexual on-file and the “you forgot your purse” line... my guy knows!

(there’s some things about Gender and also Section 8 (which I’m constantly thinking about in terms of Hawkeye) in this episode that fascinates me, but it probably wants its own post)

(also is Sid called “Milton” in this episode?)

4. Trapper’s Very Dark Turn. I think this is what was really sticking in my head -- along with the adultery and the cynicism and the... overt self-destruction I guess? Like he’s not a person/not the same person here as he is at home, in terms of my comparison of him with BJ. That being said though BJ also has some very dark undertones, but his seem to come more from whenever his Keep My Eyes Firmly On The Glittery View Of Home (with a side of self-as-hero/protector-man) technique starts glitching. Trapper is (in my mind) the kind of guy who keeps himself on a leash on purpose. Something about him is On Edge in a way that’s very different from Hawkeye’s Edge, but maybe keeping itself fed through Hawkeye who can sort of direct it in a more idealistic direction some of the time, unless of course he’s too busy going too far too (does that make sense? I don’t know, but it’s something)

5. Hawkeye falling for the new nurse Erika, whom he originally thinks is married and having an Intense reaction to it! Ohhhh we love Hawkeye’s saga of Marriage And Reactions There To -- be it whatever one imagines between him and Trapper ( @jerottblyth will never not think about “fucking in proximity” as a Complex Ritual), Hawkeye and Erika before she informs him she’s not married, in which he really doesn’t like the idea of being involved in adultery (and THEN his immediate idea that maybe they should get married -- file that under Brain Chemistry and Compulsory Heteronormativity, Folks), Hawkeye and BJ (another Complex Ritual of “I Will Make Sure Your Marriage Stays Upright Until You’re Home”), and Hawkeye and Carlye (”Maybe We Should Get Married Now Our Affair Has Led To Your Divorce” he says, physically backing himself up against a corner)

(call me crazy, call it my queer sensibilities, but I don’t think Hawkeye wants to get married -- he wants many things, but not marriage)

they sure are buddy....... and how do we feel about that as a man with one foot out of the closet at all times?

hi! I love your analyses, I've been reading a lot of them as preparation for a fanfic I'm writing (lol) focusing on griffguts and casca, and though this is a unrelated, what do you think of the entire black dogs/wyald arc? i'm.. of the personal opinion that it should be ignored entirely, even as a new berserk fan, i felt it added nothing in terms of character development, except making guts a little more dislikeable pre-eclipse, and torturing casca more. the only cool scene was the reveal that wyald was a weak old man.. but honestly i overall pretend it doesn't exist

(I also think the anime adaptations did a good job when they adapted it out entirely. I dunno, pacing wise I liked it more. there's no epic fights, no pillaging villages because of them, just the band of the falcon, desperate and lonely, running away from Wyndham)

Honestly I think I have a minority opinion in that I think the Wyald sequence is significant and, aside from the gratuitous sexual assault ofc, I actually like it. Though I do think the adaptations were correct to get rid of it, pacing-wise.

The main reason I think it's valuable is in showing Guts' "dream" in action - he wants to fight stronger and stronger enemies, well, here he is doing it. And it makes Casca cry, it nearly kills him, Zodd's still the one who ultimately takes Wyald out and saves Griffith, and Guts behaves as though he's driven by a personal vendetta when he fights Wyald, holding a grudge over Zodd and, subtextually, lashing out because of his rape trauma. "No matter what, I've gotta settle the score with him... with them... by my own sword."

Like it definitely makes Guts less likeable, but I think that's important, to show that it's not just the Eclipse that drives him in the Black Swordsman arc - it's something deeper than that, that the Eclipse just added more anger to. And also to further show that his year long vacation of dream pursual wasn't that great either, and didn't make him a better person. We've already seen hints of that with his philosophical speech to Casca after which she screams at him for only caring about his sword, and honestly I think the cocky attitude he displays at the tournament we see is a little reminiscent of the Black Swordsman arc - much less dark, much happier, but he's still a dick in some similar ways that we didn't see during the rest of the Golden Age, in a way that feels transitional - and which is underlined during the Wyald fight.

Also the flashback to Godo's where Erika suggests he just wants to fight Zodd again after Guts nearly kills himself with his training exercize and she's like 'you're gonna die my dude.' I'm a little salty that both adaptations cut that actually because I think it's one of the most important character notes for Guts. (The anime essentially wrote in the exact opposite of this scene in their cliche training montage lol, and I think that's my single most hated creative decision in the anime.)

And on top of that, I also think it's significant for Griffith - both Wyald's dressing down (which the anime preserves, thankfully) and his sense of isolation and worthlessness when he can't do anything to help the Hawks, or even comfort Casca.

And tonally I think it works pretty well to lead into the Eclipse. The Eclipse coming out of nowhere works better, imo, when you don't have the entire Black Swordsman arc hanging over the Golden Age's head. You can play it as a shocking turn in an adaptation where we've never seen a sacrifice and don't already know what happened to turn Griffith into Femto. But after the BS arc, and especially after Count Slug's scene, I feel like it just works better to sort of slowly reintroduce that kind of more extreme dark fantasy to the story, and build up to the Eclipse with Wyald saying he has business with Griff soon, begging Griff to call the Godhand, Zodd telling Griff the behelit will return, etc. After the BS arc it gives the late Golden Age a very 'oh shit here it comes' vibe, which I personally love lol.

Anyway yeah, I absolutely get why people don't like it and I think that's totally fair - it's kind of weird to have a 10 chapter long big monster fight interlude between the rescue and the Eclipse, Wyald is obnoxious as hell, the aforementioned gratuitous assault and really shitty mistreatment of Casca by the narrative, etc. But overall I'm still into it lol.
