Disabled OCs 2: Electric Boogaloo

it’s them, they’re here! Or yknow, a chunk of em. i had a LOT backlogged and there are even more in store i have saved away - the ones here are the most fleshed out!

To start, with who appears to already pique peeps interest:

⬆️ Bumble Bea the flower-capybara!

Most notable is her golden and wild long flowing hair. It has green streaks through it, along with plenty of flowers; some grown by her, and others gathered throughout her life. They’re able to stay alive as long as she keeps them in her mane. Definitely the hippie type, she enjoys being around people and in nature. She is friendly towards everyone, and calls them all some variation of “honey” (hun, honey bun, hun bun..,), she’ll even sometimes pluck a flower to give to you!

Her original dream was to be a rockstar sensation, specializing in psychedelic rock. She even has her own custom guitar (which looks like a bumblebee!). Has hyperthyroidism and fibromyalgia - the chronic pain of which made her decide to retire. She’ll come out to play every so often, just not so extensively as before. For now, she simply hangs out with her family and helps them with their own problems.

⬆️ Lonnie Lop the jerboa-rabbit!

Lonnie is a jokester who doesn’t take much seriously. So much so, he sometimes forgets that some topics are off limits. Barely being an adult, he has trouble judging people, and tends to take things at face value. He’s an overly emotional immature thing at times... but he’s discovered that his family is most important to him.

Lonnie wanted to become an idol more than anything way back when - he had the cuteness, the singing skill, the dancing and everything else! But they had all turned him down, and it’s not really a mystery why. He has a stoma on his abdomen and has a colostomy bag - the most decorated and brightly colored ones are his favorite. He is also borderline anemic and has pica - both of which caused an event that led to him getting the stoma in his childhood.

For now, he simply helps his family out with random little jobs. He looks up to Bumble, who he considers his sister. He still insists on becoming an idol somehow.

⬆️ Otto the otter!

He is a jolly old man with a big heart, and a laugh so loud it shakes the building. Some people might be off-put by his openness, but he’s nothing but sincere. He will always set time aside to listen to whatever problems you may be having, though he isn’t exactly the most intellectual. He’s a lil’ confused but he’s got the spirit.

Otto has epilepsy, along with chronic migraines. All his sons and daughters left the nest and got careers in the technological industry, and he’s nothing but happy for them. But he stays away from screens and such. He’s moreso a man that works with his hands. And he does! Whenever he isn’t in the house with his new found family, he’ll be outside working on a project.

After the passing of his wife and his kids going on to do great things, he’s opened his house up for the ones who have no home. Many people have come to call his house ‘home’ and become part of the family. He fosters kids and helps people feel appreciated when they never have. Bumble came by long ago and is officially part of the family. Lonnie was the first foster kid at his home, and also was the first to be adopted by him.

⬆️ Kato the croco-llope and Lea the sheep-leopard!

Lea has high morality, which many remember her for: she shall never speak ill of someone. Never outwardly be rude or mean to someone. She tends to prioritize helping others over herself, even to the point of bringing harm onto herself. At times like these, usually standoffish Kato will step in and stand up for her. They known each other for a very long time - Kato has known her most of his life, and Lea has known him for over a decade now.

Lea was born deaf and is very adept at ASL and reading lips. Kato lost his arm and eye, has hearing loss in his right ear, among other things, due to something that happened long ago. Despite this, he’s become quite skilled at kung fu - even CCMO has commended him, and request he train others at the dojo alongside him.

The two live at Otto’s Foster Home, with Lea having registered to be the full-time caretaker there. She made Kato go through the training and begrudgingly become registered as well, though he now enjoys it. Lea owns a specialized dulcimer while Kato has and can play his adungu. They’ll play as a duet for the kids sometimes, who always enjoy their little performances.

⬆️ Donna the chameleon-iguana!

She herself has barely any recollection of what she’s like. She remembers slipping away... and then ‘waking up’ in PaRappa Town. after an unpleasant run-in with a certain flower girl, Donna is guided towards the Otto home with the help of a kind rapping dog. She was shaken from the experience still, and simply finds vacancy there.

She wasn’t willing to open up to anyone there, yet finds an unlikely friend in someone called Theo. With his roundabout help and the eventual help of the others who live there, she manages to recover from her past experiences and unlock her past, so that she can finally put her best foot forward.

Donna had untreated juvenile arthritis, and now consequentially has joint damage from it, among other things. She wears loose clothes and has long ties attached to zippers in order to help her move with less strain.

⬆️ Theo the bugbot!

He is an old, cranky, pessimist grump who always has something snarky to say. You’d be lucky if he didn’t directly tell you straight to your face. Doesn’t acquaint much with the other people in the Otto household (where he resides), until he met Donna. They form an unlikely friendship - his abrasive attitude was what she needed to address her problems, and in turn, she helps him be less of an ass.

Congenitally amputated legs, so he attaches large wheels to spurs to get around. He also has pulmonary fibrosis that developed from sarcoidosis. He wears a powerful respirator he had built himself everywhere outside of his room. Hoists oxygen tanks on his back thanks to a vest he designed for himself. Theo also has a sort of addiction to chocolate - the one he wasn’t able to kick. He was very self-destructive in his youth, though he begrudgingly takes better care of himself now.

Theo is talented at home improvement, as can be seen with his assisted living tools. Though he’s embarrassed over it for multiple reasons, he can play the hurdy-gurdy quite well, and does so often when he’s alone in his room. He even played for Donna on one occasion, though he wouldn’t dream of showing the other people in the house his playing skills.

⬆️ Angel the anteater and Cupcake the sugar glider!

Angel was an overachieving student at the college, going for a degree in writing, until the day she became sick with what she thought was the flu. But after weeks of rest, she became worse and worse - and was eventually diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis (commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome). She joined a support group so as not to be alone during this time. and met Cupcake, who instantly took a liking to her.

Cupcake has Crohn’s disease, and visibility problems due to complications with Crohn’s disease. She had to radically change her diet from before; she eats plenty of honey which helps, but misses cocoa products. The two live together in one dorm, with Cupcake not even hesitating to help Angel with whatever she needs. She always wanted to be a nurse, though she was teaching as Home Ec now.

When Angel inevitably loses her schooling and thus her dorm, the two move in together into Otto’s home. Angel gives what she can by helping the kids with their school curriculum. Cupcake helps her with that, and also teaching the kids other things they need to know. Angel is able to play the harp, while Cupcake plays the harpsichord. They make a fantastic duo, both as a duet and otherwise.

⬆️ Gilly Gary the garden snail!

A boy with the voice of an angel, Gilly was one of the foster kids at Otto’s home before being adopted by a quadruplet slug singing group. They all have a dream of being able to make it big performing all over the world - but until then, they perform at small venues all across PaRappa Town. They’ll sometimes even host fundraisers for homes and institutions that need it.

Though Gilly wants to be a star in the singing world, he doesn’t take much seriously. He just wants to goof off and have fun! He and Lonnie would raise trouble together, seeing as they brought the most mischievous side out of each other.

Gilly had his leg amputated at a young age due to a rapidly spreading infection, and uses Lofstran crutches to support himself. He really doesn’t care, though since he’s a bit of a fashionista (he adores the aesthetic of the mid to late 70s), he won’t EVER cut off a pant leg, and resigns to tucking it in instead. It comes in helpful when trying to sneak stuff into the movie theatre haha funni reference

⬆️ Pekh the wolf-rooster!

This is a cheerful, euphoric man who rises up early every day to greet the sun. He is incredibly happy with himself, and chivalrous - anything he has, he immediately gives to someone else. He already knows he’s glorious, so someone else should have it instead! Though, he isn’t really the sharpest beak on the block. He may be easily confused by something you say, but he’d support you all the way.

His kidneys don’t work very well, and so he gets a dialysis 3 days a week, but takes care of his body otherwise. Why wouldn’t he? He’s the best! On his way to the doctor office, he’ll yodel aloud to himself and everyone around, and will continue while getting the dialysis done. He has an AV fistula in his left arm. He wanted the graft, but the fistula was the better option.

Some people are a bit annoyed by his self-euphoria, but others find it endearing. His family (everyone in the Otto household) see him as a beacon of happiness - Lonnie looks up to him, Theo gets irritated by his bubbliness, while everyone else in the house cheers him on.

And that’s the 2nd round of disabled OCs! I had a blast designing them all. I still have so many more that have yet to be 100% done yet (and i even have the first round to shine up and reintroduce)! I’ll see yall when i put up round 3! These were so exhausting to draww

Since I’m just as obsessed with yarn craft (making it and dyeing it and using it) as I am with fandom, I just feel that y’all should know, in every modern AU I make where Lan Wangji has bunnies, they’re all angora and he raises them for not only being precious, but also he steals their wool. I’m making an AU where it’s a 3zun sorta fic (they all technically live separately with their houses next to each other in a triangle and knocked down their fences so they would have one massive garden) and LWJ was obsessed with bunnies when he was little but Lan Xichen really liked to knit so he was all ‘hey, let’s get angora rabbits’ and now Lan Qiren spins their fiber into yarn and when LWJ is like 9, Wei Wuxian shows up cause the Jiang’s bought the lakehouse across the street from them and so now they show up for holidays and school breaks and LWJ got an instant crush on him and crocheted him a beanie because WWX has never seen snow before (y’all this bitch out here while it’s snowing in shorts and a tee shirt LWJ is afraid he’s gonna DIE) and WWX falls in love instantly and it’s cute. Also WWX is trans. And Meng Yao raises Mo Xuanyu and later on Rusong (not his kid, Qin Su showed up saying she couldn’t handle getting rid of it but she couldn’t keep it either so MY was all ‘okay, I’ll take it’ and that’s that) and later on after WWX gives birth to A-Yuan (yeah I went there, deal with it, it was an accident tho, WWX is told he should get rid of it cause he’s too young for being pregnant but he’s all ‘nope, going through with it, then I’m getting those parts removed’ cause oooof) LXC suddenly gets surprise custody of their little cousin 6month old Lan Jingyi and he’s all ‘Ahh shit’ and so there’s like. So many toddlers running around the garden at all times. Jin Zixuan meets Jiang Yanli when he’s visiting one day and she’s over having tea with LXC while they watch the kids roll around like a bunch of idiots in the garden and it’s cute. They like each other. Jiang Cheng gets sick when he’s around sixteen and ends up getting an organ transplant (or maybe bone marrow? I was looking up transplant stuff but apparently if you get a donated kidney you’re only expected to live another 20 years at most before you need another transplant??? IF you can get another??? And liver would be much more rare I guess for a 16 year old. But if he had some sort of cancer or a disease involving bone marrow transplant as a treatment, it could work) and WWX is the one that gives the transplant. Why??? Because you need some angst in somewhere and tbh I kinda want 16 year olds JC and WWX to spend a while in the lakehouse doing homeschooling (with LWJ because LQR homeschools him cause of his fear of crowds and Jiang Fengmian was all ‘hey, can you just... teach them for a year?? They’re too tired to cause much trouble anyways and they can’t go to school and hanging out with LWJ night cheer them up) and Nie Huaisang takes that as permission to get homeschooled for a year (Nie Mingjue originally refused him because he was a little shit and wouldn’t stop bothering him when he didn’t have people to chat with all day but now he’ll have JC and WWX to chat with) and now LQR is stuck with them all for a year before JC and WWX go back to their hometown school. It’s long enough for LWJ and WWX to start a budding romance and for JC to realize that he thinks relationships are nasty and kissing is gross. Actually, they probably just stay there till they’re all graduated because why the heck not. Yanli is dating JZX and uses that as an excuse to visit him often (well, she’s also spoiling baby bro’s, but if she can get some flirting in while it’s happening, why not) and YZY and JFM tend to travel a lot so they don’t see an issue with them all staying there while they can. It’s been helpful to WWX cause there’s still some issues with bullying back in their hometown (and in a town where not everyone sees him as the ‘weird tomboy girl who thinks she’s a boy’ here, he gets into less fights) and this has been really helpful.

I wanted to make the worlds longest paragraph ever but tumblr said no. So anyways. JC is still in recovery for a while so it’s best at the Lakehouse instead of a city, and he can chill out on the porch in the warmer months and get cozy inside next to the fireplace with a million blankets and hot cocoa when it’s cold out. He’s. So. Cozy. Also JFM got him a service cat because WWX still can’t be near dogs. He wishes his bro could get a dog and feels bad about it, but tbh they keep forgetting that for all JC would like a dog, he’s basically a slut for any cute animal ever. He hangs out in the 3zun garden across the street a lot. NHS has like 15 birds and NMJ has like four cats (who are Not allowed in the atrium lol) and LWJ has all those rabbits and MY has like a million kids and those are basically wild animals so they count. (Seriously tho family members keep dropping kids off with 3zun and not coming back for them but??? It’s okay??? Cause they’re all ‘single’ -not living together- gay men and so none of them can get on an adoption list for shit anyways. Lol so many kiddos running around.) LQR is ready to murder WWX by the time the kiddos all graduate and he’s all ‘oh thank god now I don’t have to see him all the time’ but then WWX shows up at the house one day (him and LWJ have been dating for like a year and a half now) and he’s all ‘hey. I’m. Pregnant.’ And LQR is all ‘...ahhhh shit now I gotta deal with him even more’ and it’s. Amazing.

WWX pretty much moves in with them after that (WWX is all ‘we can get an apartment or something’ and 3zun is all ‘sure, okay’ but then always find a way to distract them cause they’re all ‘yeah, we like our space’ but then they’re all ‘if a single sibling/child of ours moves out we’ll get instant empty-nest syndrome and die’ and so they’re like. Really possessive over their kiddos. LQR is mostly there cause he’s the only adult that bothered to stay in LXC and LWJ’s lives when they were growing up and he’s great.

A year after A-Yuan is born, they get Lan Jingyi (he gets dropped off with LXC and just never picked up again wild) and then Jin Ling is born (and he gets dropped on Meng Yao a lot cause JZX has watched him with kids before and knows his brother genuinely loves babies) and then Qin Su (their half sibling) shows up one day all ‘hey, so, I’m pregnant and I’m not keeping it but it’s too late to get rid of, you like kids, you want one?’ And MY is all ‘...yes...’ and she stays with them till little Rusong is born and then heads off to live her life and MY gets the joy of taking care of an infant that he hasn’t gotten to experience since MXY was little which was like 13 years ago. Lol MXY isn’t all that enthused with his new baby bro but Baba says he’ll get less ugly when he’s older and stops looking like a potato. MXY does NOT agree that he once looked like a potato himself, how dare you, Baba!

They have a greenhouse and LXC is definitely growing pot in it.

i’ve got a story about a veterinarian visit that’s leaving me with a bad taste in my mouth

my newest dog, Lucky, started getting more and more aggressive with my other dog, named Bear, and would snap and growl at him before the two started getting in all out fights. this was sudden behavior that came entirely out of nowhere (to my attention) after i’ve had Lucky for a little under 2 years now.

to help alleviate this, we began separating the two, but Lucky would only get anxious being upstairs with me, while Bear would sit at the stairs and wait for his friend to come down. but if the two ever got near each other, they would go right back to howling and snapping.

it took us a few weeks as the incidents of fighting became more and more common before we took them both to the vet clinic to have them evaluated. i’ve suspected that Lucky is having some serious anxiety as he is a dog that gets frightened by an oven alarm. my mother couldn’t think of anything in the environment that would trigger the sudden onset of anxiety so she insisted we take him to the vet to see if there was anything to be done. we’ve had to keep the dogs in entirely separate parts of the house until this appointment, out of each other’s sight, to even alleviate the howling from behind closed doors.

when we got to the vet, they had signs all over the establishment that stated we weren’t allowed in the building due to the threat of the COVID virus spreading and that they would come out to our cars and talk to us about our animals to determine if they needed to be brought in (without their owners unless the owner needed to be present, i should mention). we got there on time for the appointment, vet came out nearly 13 minutes after we were scheduled to be brought in and told us he was only going to do a 15 minute appointment with us because of how busy he was that day.

while we were waiting around outside and getting some fresh air, Lucky was shaking and crying and i couldn’t do much but try to soothe him. i knew he was having some major anxiety, but i wasn’t sure what to do. eventually the vet came out and told us to sit outside on the benches, but he kept a very large distance away from us, even the dogs. he was constantly being interrupted by other patient’s requesting his assistance. i should mention, there was no emergency going on. these were just patients walking up to him and he completely turned away from us to address them.

what little conversation we were able to get going, he immediately jumped to the conclusion, WITHOUT examining EITHER of my dogs, that Lucky is an inherently aggressive dog. i told him that this behavior was very sudden and Lucky has never been aggressive anytime before the past few weeks, he’s never been so mean like this in the past 2 years that i’ve had him.

but the vet told me that it must be inherent aggression and that there was nothing we could to do help it. he suggested that Lucky then be sent to another home with other owners. when i tried to tell him that i thought it was anxiety, he waved it off and kept telling us that we can try to fix it, but we shouldn’t expect results.

I want to reiterate that this veterinarian, a man who is able to treat injured or diseased animals, as well as aid them psychologically and identify their issues, told my family who that the ONLY way to help my anxious dog (who has HUGE separation issues when I need to leave the house just to throw the trash out) is to send him to live with another family. To separate him from a family that he has known for just shy of two years after we found him on the street and took him in to be vaccinated and given a proper home. The veterinarian told us to put him in another home because it was the only solution.

I was tearing up at the suggestion and I was afraid that I was going to start crying then and there. But as we were leaving, I pulled my phone out and started asking my friends, other people, looked it up online. It all said the same thing: sending my dog somewhere else was a last resort and there were definitely other ways to handle this situation.

I looked into it more. Asked more people about it. We noticed trends in when he was getting aggressive: when my other dog would follow him everywhere he went. We noticed that he must be feeling cramped because we recently put up a small gate to keep them from going upstairs and the four people, two others dogs, and three cats are living under the same roof. We noticed that Lucky gets scared of loud noises, and my parents often scream and shout across the house (and I will, as well).

To reiterate: my most anxious dog started getting very aggressive. We took him to a veterinarian, hoping to have him diagnosed or at least evaluated to see if the aggression was a health issue. Instead of asking us what home life was like, he took one look at my shaking and crying dog and told us that we would only be able to help him by sending him away. No physical contact with Lucky, not even within 6 feet of him. And he immediately dismissed us as soon as he’d made that verdict. I went to other sources about it, and they all told me that Lucky’s behavior wasn’t aggression and could in fact be treated.

I am going to do more research on how to help my dog. As of now, we still need to keep Lucky and Bear separated because Lucky will still get vicious at the sight of Bear. But I hate having to do this because Lucky very clearly doesn’t wanna be stuck in my room. I’ve been suggested to open back up the environment and undo all the changes that were made recently to help alleviate the anxiety. Of course, helping to ease Lucky’s fears and anxiousness is going to be a long-term task, but I plan to see it through to the best of my ability.

Life lesson of the day: Don’t just take one person’s word for fact, even if they have a lot of credentials. I realized after the fact that this was the same veterinarian who told my family that my oldest cat of 19-years old (he’s older than me!) was going to die when I was 14-years old from some sort of kidney issue. Yes, my 19-year old cat is still kicking, even if a little on the weak side. But he’s extremely healthy and happy today. Because we stubbornly fought the notion that my cat was going to die and we looked for other people and other treatments and we found it and he’s still alive.

Her nickname in her family changes to Mato when she inherits her grandfather’s Lakota name in honor of graduating from high school. AGE: Varies by verse between 18 years to 26 years. Default age is 19-20. POSITION: Default verse is a university student majoring in nursing and member of the swim club. Becomes a certified midwife nurse later on. RESIDENCE: Grew up on the Black Hawk Reservation in Montana, United States. Her current location depends on the verse. FAMILY: Destiny Halcyon (mother), Lucas Halcyon (father), Issac “Mato” Halcyon (grandfather, deceased). NOTE: Mato means bear or fiercely angry in the Lakota language. Appearance: Her long hair is dark brown, sometimes mistaken as black with long bangs and gray eyes. Harmony stands about 5 foot 4 inches (162.5 cm) who is toned due to working out with a pear-shaped figure. Her weight fluctuates between 135-140 pounds (61.2- 63.5 kg).

Her style varies. Compared to many girls in Iwatobi, Harmony is deemed to be a bigger girl due to her figure and musculature. Harmony is a member of the Lakota tribe from her father’s side. It was a goodbye present from her grandfather before leaving Black Hawk.

Harmony has three piercings. One on each ear lobe and she has a piercing on her tongue. When she swims, the piercings are replaced with retainers.

She also has features indicating her motif. Harmony has sharper canines to resemble a grizzly bear’s teeth. Hidden beneath her clothing are ghastly scars over her body. Her upper back, right shoulder from childhood. Growing up, there’s a reason why she opts to wear long sleeves. By the time she turned eighteen, Harmony received a tattoo on her upper back of an eagle.

Note: Due to cultural norms, Harmony would conceal the tattoo in public in Japan. in other verses where she is located elsewhere, she would be more likely to reveal her tattoo and scars.

PERSONALITY: Generally, Harmony a shy girl who can get excited on occasion. This can be off-putting to other people, especially if she just met them. It makes her come off as socially awkward. Most of the time, she’s more reserved, often in the background. She fears that people won’t like her because of the color of her skin, her name, or the scars she hides. This makes her have little confidence in herself. It will take time for Harmony to warm up to someone. Once she does, she’s sweet, even affectionate. Her most noticeable traits are her kindness, being polite, and quiet nature. Much like a grizzly bear, she can be fierce, which may be a bit scary. It occurs when she witnesses injustice or when her friends are in trouble. This is a little bit of a contrast to what she was like living in Tokyo prior to moving to Iwatobi. She was more belligerent and had a habit of getting herself into trouble. This is explained more in detail to what brought this on in her full backstory, which is further down the profile. She’s stubborn, sometimes this can do more harm than good. Harmony means well, but even after living in Japan for several years, she still has much to learn and a lot to adjust to. Harmony is dedicated, sticking to her tasks to the end. The last thing she wants to do is let anyone down.

Harmony Halcyon was born and raised in Montana. Her parents owned a small bison ranch, and she used to spend her days helping her parents and riding her horse to endless plains. She loved the mountains that stand in the distance and the sky was open, limitless. As a child, she spent time with her paternal grandfather. She was trapped in the fire. A burning tree strikes her down, pinning her to the scorched ground. A desperate attempt to free herself burned her right hand and arm. Burning debris fell upon the girl.

She couldn’t escape.But she wasn’t alone. Sedona desperately dug at the pile of fallen branches and ash. The dog pulled Harmony out and to the edge of a lake away from the smoke. Sedona left her, only to return with a rescue team following her. If it wasn’t for her Sedona, Harmony wouldn’t have survived. Mojave’s return without Harmony warned her parents and they acted quickly, only to find that rescuers found their daughter and was transported for burn treatments. The burns would remain as scars on her skin. Harmony struggled when she became ill from infections, a result of the burns. In the end, Harmony would pull through. But the same could not be said for the stability her family had.

The wildfire took everything. The herd was killed by the flames and stifling fumes. Harmony’s home engulfed by flames. It almost claimed her life.All that was left was her family, Mojave, Sedona, and a few of their belongings.

.The Halcyons had nowhere to go and the hospital bill was high, Indian Health Service couldn’t help cover all the costs. Employment was difficult to come by in Black Hawk. No one in their small town would hire them, except two Air Force recruiters who met Harmony’s father, Lucas. He took a chance that day. He enlisted and soon found out he must go to Yokota Base near Tokyo, Japan. The family made sacrifices before leaving the United States. Harmony’s heart broke when her parents sold Mojave. They couldn’t take her with them. The little girl could only watch when a strange man drove away with Mojave in a trailer behind his truck. Harmony wouldn’t ever see her again.

Thankfully, the family kept Sedona, and the family relocated when Harmony was ten years old. They lived modestly, just like always while sending some money back to help Mato make ends meet. She struggled in a new country. New expectations, new people, new language. She was rebellious as a child, not adjusting well to the culture shock. Children made fun of her trying to speak in Japanese and her appearance. She was darker compared to the other children. The children often question whether “Indians” still scalp people or live in tipis like in the old movies. They teased with war cries and left her out in most of their activities.Fitting in society was just part of the problem. Harmony couldn’t stand the sense of claustrophobia with the city enclosing around her. She stayed in the large city, almost forgetting what the stars looked like and it’s as though the sky that she once loved is imprisoned by towering skyscrapers. She missed the mountains and valleys, and the sky that could go on for thousands of miles.

Yet, Harmony soon got used to it. Slowly adjusting to the life on the base and in an urban setting. The family learned to speak Japanese and blend in the best they could. Unfortunately, there would be another tragedy inflicted on Harmony when she turned thirteen. Her grandfather passed away, succumbing to his long battle for hsi health.

First her home, Mojave, and now her grandfather. Harmony felt isolated, hurt, and yet she couldn’t do anything. Kids made fun of her for not looking the same, her necklace, and although she became more fluent in Japanese, she still stuck out. She tried to make the most of it but wished things were different. Isolation has left her longing for friends, becoming withdrawn and unsure of herself. This led her to get into trouble for any sort of attention. This included getting into fights.After several years, Harmony’s father went into retirement from the Air Force.

Her parents grew to love Japan, but missed the quiet life in the country. They were also afraid of Harmony getting into trouble, such as joining gangs that were rampant in the city. They thought Iwatobi would be the perfect place and relocated there. Harmony’s mother, Destiny, received an education from Yokota and gets a job as an elementary school teacher in Iwatobi. Lucas got a job as a security guard at Samezuka Academy, and Harmony transferred to Iwatobi High School.

After moving from the city to the quiet town, Harmony must acclimate to another dramatic change of environment. This time, it was easier because Iwatobi is closer to nature, just the way she likes it. However, making friends isn’t easy, which led her to wonder if joining a club would help in achieving that goal. After searching for all the options, Harmony discovered the Iwatobi Swim Club. A chance to challenge herself, make a name for herself, and make friends.

cw pet death but this is mostly behind a cut because I’m rambling again trying to process some things and figure out some other things, and it got long

the thing that's getting me the most about grieving Scully--and again, I know I'm not breaking any new ground here, and I know I’ve been very lucky compared to people who have already lost pets or even friends or family members, but it's new and unpleasant for me--is how damn inconsistent it is, sometimes on an hourly basis. like, I'll be kind of okay, mostly thinking about good memories, focusing on the good life I gave him, remembering the love more than the pain, thinking about getting another dog so I can spread that love to another fur baby who needs it. and then sometimes there's nothing okay about it at all, and I want to cry again, and all I can think about is that it wasn't fair, we were managing his kidney disease well and he could have stayed happy and healthy for a lot longer if this stupid random other thing hadn't come up (but at the same time, it's kind of good that it was something sudden and definitive, instead of a long, slow decline where we'd keep having to ask ourselves whether he still had a good quality of life or if we were just being selfish), and I miss him and I want him back so much and it's just wrong that this little guy who was such a big part of my life doesn't exist in the world anymore, and sometimes it feels like if I just do the right thing or make the right bargain the universe will give him back to me, and I don’t know how to reconcile myself to the reality that that isn’t possible.

and part of what's so frustrating about that, just aside from the fact that it hurts, is that it also makes it really hard to know how best to move forward. specifically: should I get another dog, and if so, when? I mean, I do want one, because dogs are so good, and I love them, and I want to give another dog a good home, and I've already been looking online at adoptable dogs and falling a little bit in love with some of them--but at the same time can I really deal with doing this again? it would be so much easier and less painful to just not give my heart to another dog child that I'll inevitably lose. do the positive effects on my mental health outweigh the negatives, especially at the end of a dog's life but during it as well? there's an aspect of relief to everything being over with Scully, because his health was slowly declining for at least the past couple years, more so in the last several months, and I was always worrying about him on some level--and even when he was healthy, there was always that awful awareness at the back of my mind when I'd hold him or look at him, going "you're going to lose this someday". but then, if I could go back and make a different choice about adopting Scully to save myself the pain of losing him, I'd never do it. I can't always say the pain was worth it, at least not yet, but I still wouldn't give up the years I had with him for anything. so don't I want that with another dog? it seems...masochistic and ridiculous, making a deliberate choice that I KNOW will eventually lead to a lot of pain. but that's...inevitable with everything, right? everything ends. that's pretty much the one constant. the only way you can protect yourself from the pain of losing things is to refuse to care about anything and then, well, what's the point of life in the first place?

on a more practical level, it is sort of nice that I don't have to structure my schedule around a doggo's need to be walked, for the first time in almost 10 years; mostly it means my weekends and evenings are a little freer, and also I don't have to go out and get wet and/or cold when the weather's not ideal. but I mean...I would happily give back that convenience if it meant having Scully alive and healthy again, so...it's really not a major consideration. although it might be an argument for waiting until winter's over. except that means like...AT LEAST six more dogless months.

which of course is another important question! if most parts of my brain are agreed that yes, getting another dog is worth it even for the parts that will hurt, what's the right timing? is there, in fact, a way to know in advance what the right timing is? like...maybe it would be better if I waited, because maybe then I would be able to get all of this straightened out for myself, and even my subconscious would accept that Scully’s really gone, and I could heal and focus on the good stuff and welcome a new doggo for all the right reasons, instead of only sometimes feeling like the joy is worth the pain. buuuuut if I put it off, will I just keep doing that because it's easier? how will I know, anyway, when or whether I've healed enough? there's a pretty strong argument to be made that finding a new dog would actually be the best way to heal, because then the new furry friend would be a positive presence demanding my attention, instead of the Scully-shaped absence almost constantly making itself felt currently. (I'm making it sound like I don't have a cat either and I feel a little bad about that because I do love him too, but...it's really not the same. he's a great cat! and for various reasons he's just not going to fill the Scully-shaped absence. he doesn't like being held, for one thing, and...y'all, I need a furry little friend to cuddle.) this is actually backed up by personal experience because when my previous cat died, it was nowhere near as bad as this but I was still pretty upset, and what helped most was a week or so later when the universe dropped another cat into our laps. we didn't even have plans of getting a new cat at that point--it just sort of happened.

BUT given that in this case I'm seeking out new dogs, it's an active choice rather than a reaction to a new kiddo wandering into my life (unless I took my sister's dog, which...wouldn't work out that well because he's bigger than Scully and even worse about being underfoot, and our place is already crowded), so is it the right choice to be making? am I more likely to make a wrong choice because I'm kind of in a hurry? (but also there's no guarantee that I'll find The Perfect Dog if I wait, it's hardly even possible to find The Perfect Car and this is pretty different. but still. I didn't even choose Scully in the first place--my sister did that--so I actually have no experience choosing a dog, and y'all know I have a real problem with decision paralysis at the best of times. when it's an important long-term commitment...well.) is it fair to the potential new dog, when I know it would be a rebound to one extent or another? I mean that's kind of a silly question because I would be making the same commitment no matter what, and a dog who doesn't have a home of their own will almost definitely care more about getting a home than about whether it takes a little while for them to transition from "rebound dog" to "second love of my life" or whatever. but--is it fair, still? especially if, I don't know, I find a new dog who needs a little extra love and patience and maybe I don't have that in me yet? would I just end up trying to find Scully 2.0, inevitably failing, and then unfavorably comparing New Dog to him, instead of being able to welcome New Dog as an individual little fur person in their own right? (there is also personal precedent for this, in the other direction! I loved my previous cat, I really did, but when we got our current cat, I mostly just found myself noticing how many things about him I liked better because he was so much friendlier!) is it disrespectful to Scully's memory to get a new dog soon? that's also kind of a silly question but...is it? or at least, will it feel that way to me and make me feel too guilty to bond properly with New Dog?

and then I was also thinking, would it be better in some respects to deliberately go for a senior dog because in some ways it would be less of a long-term commitment, and I'd be able to provide a good home for a dog who otherwise might have trouble getting adopted while maybe not getting quite so deeply attached because they wouldn't be with me as long (and if they were old enough, they'd probably spend most of their time sleeping anyway) and then maybe it wouldn't hurt as much at the end? or would that be even worse, because I'd probably fall in love anyway? for that matter, should I focus on giving a home to a dog who's been without one for a long time, which would probably mean one of several funny-looking Chihuahua mixes that I wouldn't necessarily find cute even if I'm sure I could find one whose personality I love? or is it okay to hold out for what I actually want on a superficial level, which generally just means "cute face, soft fur, not quite as small or short-haired as your typical Chihuahua mix"? similarly, should I focus on shelter dogs who currently have sadder lives and greater need for a home, or is it okay to look mostly at rescue groups that generally have dogs in foster homes and are more likely to have the kind of dog I'm looking for? (this might not even be relevant because I don't think the local shelter actually has any small dogs available for adoption right now, but. still.)

obviously the other relevant question is "am I overthinking everything" and the answer is "almost definitely yes, because that's how the Kyra do"...and unfortunately it's all stuff I have to work out for myself, one way or another, because nobody else can really figure it out for me. but I guess if anyone who’s been through this has advice on how to untangle the mess, that probably couldn’t hurt. >_<

I am in constant pain. My shoulders are so sore, it feels as though I have been punched. I cannot lie on my left side, as the pain brings tears to my eyes. My knees hurt, my back pain is unbearable, and my wrists and elbows throb. I have decided to document a daily pain inventory to log the real suffering of FM, not to focus on the pain, but to shed light on living with this condition.

I am a 51 year-old woman, mother of two gorgeous, talented children and married to a committed, hard working man. I was diagnosed with FM in 2012 by my amazing rheumatologist and former surgeon, Dr. Anupam Mathur. I remember our first meeting. That is the day I was finally validated and the day I stopped feeling crazy.

My story, I believe, begins as a teenager, when my back would seize, refusing to work. Time would pass, and the pain would eventually subside; the cause, unknown. Perhaps it was due to the deformity and consequential operation performed on my feet. This was carried out by Mr. Blaney, head of surgery in what is now the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. Fast forward twenty years to the birth of my first child. The pregnancy was typical, morning sickness granted, but no other complications until delivery. I went into labor, and was admitted to Winchester Hospital Maternity Ward at 4 in the morning. My husband believed me not to be in labor (don’t you love it when men cast judgements on pregnancy – something I have teased him about for years.) I had pushed for what seemed like an eternity with two doctors and two nurses trying to deliver the baby. There was a suction cup, and hands internally trying to move the baby, but she was stuck. All of a sudden, something gave, I felt it and had enough. I must have said something to that effect, and before I knew it, I was being prepared for an emergency caesarean section, flopping like a fish from exhaustion. My daughter was delivered safely at 9:20 p.m., the most beautiful creature I had ever seen, and I have never felt such love before in my life.

The problem came when the nurses got me up the next day. I had to move my left leg manually. I was in pain, and the nurses wouldn’t believe that I couldn’t walk. It wasn’t until my sister-in-law came in, and noticed there was something wrong when I tried to walk. She insisted I was seen by the doctor. One x-ray later, with profound apologies from the nurses and doctors, I was told I had a completely separated pelvis. It was impossible for me to walk.

For years, I would see doctors and they would tell me to lose weight, everything had healed from the pregnancy. I should and would lose weight, pain would still be there. I would run in races to stay fit, pain would be there. Regardless of losing weight, eating healthy, running, biking and swimming, pain would be there. A second pregnancy, and luckily for me I had another ob-gyn who is amazing and knew about the condition that happened in the first pregnancy. She had warned me in advance that I would need crutches and a walker to help in the last trimester of the pregnancy. Her expertise avoided the fiasco of the first pregnancy and soon my handsome son was born.

I believed this was my life. I was insane. I couldn’t sleep. The tipping point came when we were rebuilding the basement of our first home. I fell down three steps, just three, and was in agony. My son and neighbor’s daughter were playing in the kitchen and the next thing I knew, my neighbor had called an ambulance to take me to our local hospital. I don’t like being scrutinized, I am a very private person. I was mortified when an ambulance came to the house, that my son had to see his mom hurt. I tried to hide the pain, pretend it wasn’t there and just get on. This time there was no escape. After that incident, I was constantly in pain. I tried everything to alleviate my discomfort. I had physical therapy and started spinal epidural shots. This helped for a short time but I would take any relief offered.

Now, I have become accustomed to pain. Forgive me for this, but I wish doctors and family members could have one day of what my body goes through. Just one. I spoke with a neighbor about the rheumatologist I was about to meet. I researched his credentials, he was experienced yet I was nervous about the visit. A last-ditch effort. My expectations were low based on prior experience. An hour after speaking with Dr. M., taking my history, and finally diagnosing me with FM. I wasn’t insane, just misdiagnosed.

Leaving his office, I was relieved to know my demon. FM is incurable, but I had a name for what had been ailing me. Here, at last, was a reason for my pain, and with reason comes responsibility. I made the decision to help others who may be suffering in silence. Starting with a conversation, an acknowledgement that you are in pain, which does not have to take over your life. Every time I take a sick day because of FM, I am diminished. The guilt is horrific, and I would rather be working than having to stay home and take care of myself. American society is unforgiving concerning the need for sick days, vacations and time off in general. I notice my body is in more pain, and while I try not to succumb to illness it often gets the better of me for a while. Then I look for reasons to move, set goals and achieve what it is I want in this life, and am meant to accomplish. For far too long, I have sat silent. I have done nothing but survive and live my life. I have so much to be grateful for and truly feel blessed with what life has given to me.

So here I am, at this juncture, looking for others who need support, a kind word and above all belief in what they’re going through. We need to say this is real, we need more research. There is an answer waiting for discovery. Cancer is despicable, (My father and my sister both succumbed to the terrible disease,) diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, but I am asking the medical community not to discount fibromyalgia.

I look fine, most of the time I act fine, but it has robbed me of more life experiences I hoped to have had. For example, staying in a hotel is out of the question. The beds cause so much pain by the third day I cry with pain. I want to go to the theater, movies, walk my dogs, volunteer but often I am exhausted and unable to participate. I have cancelled so many events because of FM, friends no longer invite me places. There is no use in explaining as to the cause because I look ‘normal.’ No one understands the extreme fatigue of FM, nor should they. If you have ever had a throbbing toothache or the flu you may understand the constant mind-numbing pain someone with FM feels. It is relentless.

When first diagnosed with FM I researched online, and it terrified me so much I couldn’t continue. I read case after case of people who no longer function because of FM. I couldn’t be that person. I need hope, I need to keep searching for relief.

With all that I have said in mind I thought that keeping a diary of some sort will be of help for those with FM and hopefully the medical community. The more people speak up, the more research funds could be collected to help those living with chronic pain condition.

Another mixed bag of 20 questions and comments from you Vetlings. I hope I’m not overloading you with answers lately. Many of these questions and comments pertain to posts made earlier in the week.

Unfortunately i do not effectively draw, and I’m profoundly jealous of those that can. I can manage an unconvincing kidney or an overly complicated scribble on an endocrine system, but they are better described as ‘a spider falling into ink and having a seizure across the paper’ than ‘art’.

Rightfully so. What sort of poodle weight as much as a grown woman? That’s a poorly thought out ruse if ever I saw one. That said, I’ve had someone come into the clinic and ask to take home a syringe full of euthanasia solution for their dog at home, which happened to be human sized. We firmly declined.

It’s a fair comparison for soft tissue surgery, which is the more common surgery. Facial surgery takes a little more finesse, but orthopedic surgery is more like carpentry.

If it’s not sprayed with anything then eating a little bit of grass is probably fine. Some cats just like to chew it, some like the novel taste or texture. A little bit wont hurt her.

I’d never heard them called ‘Scottish Straights’ before this site. I’m sure there’s a joke to be made from that name somewhere. They lack the gene for osteochondrodysplasia but are equally likely to develop the genetic heart and kidney diseases.

If you mean whether they also get osteochondrodysplasia, then it doesn’t appear to be so at this stage. This s a relatively new breed though, and I’m yet to see one in Australia, so will await further data.

It eats a whole bunch of starch and potassium that won’t do any harm to a normal cat. It’s far from a balanced diet, but the occasional banana nibble doesn’t concern me.

Someone who’s still studying this can go into more details, but asides from potentially getting colic from either pasture which is too lush, or stomach ulcers from feed which is too rich in easily digestible carbohydrates, horses (and ponies) that are fat are at increased risk of laminitis, where their hoof can basically fall off.

You can get blood levels for various vitamins and minerals checked (they’re expensive though), but I would suspect this is more likely behavioural, especially because she’s after chocolate and it’s easy to ‘spoil’ a dog who’s pregnant for the first time. I wouldn’t give in to her, especially with regard to teh chocolate.

A pug x beagle is not a ‘new pug’. While such a cross reduces some problems, It’s not going to solve all of them and is a lazy, short term solution. This is particularly the case if you have breed standards, and public desire, striving towards a flatter and flatter face.

I have talked about this before here.

What I personally would like to see is new gene infusions from multiple suitable breeds, then back crossing those mixes to pug lines, selecting for better faces, hips and spines. This will take a global effort and a lot of work to organize, but it would be the best long term solution.

I don’t see really yellow cats very often (they look like their blood has been flooded with yellow highlighter), but I have about a 50:50 track record for getting them to survive. By the time they’re that jaundiced, the poor things are very, very sick.

I tend not to see this. For young kittens their main problems from being strays are parasites and malnutrition, which you can correct with some parasite treatment and good tucker. Older cats may have picked up viral infections, FIV and Feline Leukaemia being the most important too, but if they have avoided these specific diseases then they’re pretty hardy. Pedigree cattery cats may avoid the malnutrition, but they’re not guaranteed to be free of these diseases, and it’s common to see them with cat flu, so they’re not notably better off.

I recommend everyone have a financial plan for if their pet ever gets sick, and for most people that’s insurance. However, I’m not a financial adviser so I don’t recommend any brand in particular.

I’m not a herpetologist, but firstly reptiles don’t have a gender, they have a sex. In many species it has been determined that temperature does play a role in skewing the percentages of either sex (pH and other water parameters can do this in fish too). Wikipedia has a good starting article.

Yes, we have that type of grass seed, but we don’t often use that name. They’re just a grass seed or an *expletive* grass seed.

The police usually have their own vets they prefer, but I see the occasional guide dog or seeing eye dog. They have a few extra challenges when it comes to medicating them, because instructions like “administer half a mil” is a challenge when you’re vision impaired.

I have treated a custom’s dog before, and had to write him a medical certificate to excuse him from work while he was healing after surgery.

It’s possible, you could technically ‘crack’ any articular joint. I suppose he might also be cleaning his claws, but I can’t really speculate more than that.

That’s an interesting and difficult question because video games either have very short days or lots of bad things happen and you’re likely to die

While there is a certain appeal to survival games where literally all you’re expected to do is find yourself some food and not annoy the monsters, I would probably choose the Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time. I’m still hugely fond of that game from my childhood, it was very pretty and the danger levels were manageable. And it was just pretty and peaceful a lot of the time.

Missouri man bedridden for 11 years invented a surgery and cured himself

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Doug Lindsay was 21 and starting his senior year at Rockhurst University, a Jesuit college in Kansas City, when his world imploded.

After his first day of classes, the biology major collapsed at home on the dining room table, the room spinning around him.

It was 1999. The symptoms soon became intense and untreatable. His heart would race, he felt weak and he frequently got dizzy. Lindsay could walk only about 50 feet at a time and couldn’t stand for more than a few minutes.

“Even lying on the floor didn’t feel like it was low enough,” he said.

The former high school track athlete had dreamed of becoming a biochemistry professor or maybe a writer for “The Simpsons.”

Instead, he would spend the next 11 years mostly confined to a hospital bed in his living room in St. Louis, hamstrung by a mysterious ailment.

Doctors were baffled. Treatments didn’t help. Lindsay eventually realized that if he wanted his life back, he would have to do it himself.

His journey since has amazed medical professionals.

“He did something extraordinary,” said John Novack, spokesman for Inspire, a healthcare social network for rare and chronic-disease patients. When people hear Lindsay’s story, Novack said, they often say, “I can do something similar for my kid.”

His mother was a living prophecy

Whatever was wrong with him ran in the family.

By the time Lindsay was 18 months old, his mother was so weak she could no longer pick him up.

By the time he was 4 she could no longer walk. She did manage to pick him up one more time that year, when he was choking on a jawbreaker. She saved his life.

Otherwise, she was too frail. She lived for decades, mostly bedridden with the same condition that stole her son’s twenties. After years of tests, she determined her condition was related to her thyroid, but she was too sick to travel to the Mayo Clinic to get more specialized care, Lindsay said.

Lindsay’s aunt also developed the same ailment, growing so feeble she couldn’t tie her own shoes.

As a teenager, watching his family members sidelined from life, Lindsay wondered whether his body was a ticking time bomb, too.

That day in 1999, the alarm went off.

“When I called my mom that night to tell her I needed to drop out (of college), we both knew,” he said. The family curse had struck.

He found answers in discarded medical textbooks

From the fall of 1999 onward, Lindsay was bedridden about 22 hours a day.

“If I was up, it was because I was eating or going to the bathroom,” he said.

Lindsay immersed himself in medical research, determined to find a way out. He saw specialists from endocrinology, neurology, internal medicine and other specialties. When one doctor was out of ideas, he referred Lindsay to a psychiatrist.

That’s when Lindsay he realized he’d have to figure his predicament out on his own.

While in college he had picked up a 2,200-page endocrinology textbook near a garbage can, hoping to use it to figure out what condition his mom had. In it, he found an important passage discussing how adrenal disorders could mirror thyroid disorders.

He zeroed in on his adrenal glands, which sit atop the kidneys on either side of the lower abdomen.

Using a stash of aging medical textbooks, Lindsay hypothesized that a whole class of autonomic nervous-system disorders could exist beyond the established categories of what most endocrinologists or neurologists knew about.

He cobbled together cash for a computer, had an old college roommate bring it over, and got to work.

Lindsay soon stumbled on the website for the National Dysautonomic Research Foundation, delighted an entire organization was dedicated to researching the type of disorder plaguing him and his family. He asked the foundation to send him literature about emerging research in the field.

None of the diseases the foundation was examining fit Lindsay’s pattern of symptoms. But he was getting closer.

He convinced a researcher who believed in him

Lindsay soon decided he needed a partner — not just a physician but a scientist curious enough to take on a rare case and spend long hours with him parsing it out.

The best place to find that person, he reasoned, was at the American Autonomic Society’s annual conference, attended by scientists from around the world who focused on nervous system disorders.

In 2002, he give a presentation about his disease at the group’s meeting in Hilton Head, South Carolina. To get there, Lindsay bought a row of airline tickets so that, with the help of friends, he could lay across several seats during the flight.

Lindsay arrived at the conference in a wheelchair, wearing a suit and tie, and presented himself as a Jesuit-trained scientist. He tried to comport himself like a grad student or a junior colleague to the scholars in the audience, not like a patient.

He was just a scientist living an experiment in his own body. During his talk, Lindsay argued that a certain drug might help him.

Several of the scientists disagreed with Lindsay’s hypotheses about his ailment. But that wasn’t unexpected. He didn’t even have a bachelor’s degree and he was telling doctors from Harvard University, the National Institutes of Health and the Cleveland Clinic something their medical training told them was impossible.

“They didn’t patronize me. They treated me like a scientist,” Lindsay said. “I was entering into a world of science I couldn’t participate in because I was at home and couldn’t be a grad student.”

Dr. H. Cecil Coghlan, a medical professor at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, approached Lindsay after his presentation. Coghlan said he thought Lindsay was on to something.

At last, Lindsay had a medical ally.

His first innovation was repurposing a drug

In early 2004, one of Lindsay’s friends rented an SUV, loaded a mattress in the back and drove him, lying flat, 500 miles to Birmingham.

Lindsay suspected his body was producing too much adrenaline. He knew of a drug called Levophed, which is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to raise blood pressure in some critically ill patients. Levophed is basically an injection of noradrenaline, which counters the symptoms created by excess adrenaline.

It hadn’t been done before, but Lindsay convinced Coghlan to repurpose the drug so he could live on a 24/7 noradrenaline drip for the next six years.

Lindsay spent “every second of every day” hooked up to an IV. It stabilized his condition and allowed him to be active for short periods of time around the house.

“I was no longer at risk of losing everything,” Lindsay said.

Still, other than doctors’ visits, a high school reunion and a few weddings, Lindsay’s autonomic dysfunction kept him mostly confined to the house he grew up in well beyond his twenties.

Why was he so sick, he wondered? Something was dumping way too much adrenaline into his blood.

Coghlan told him he might have an adrenal tumor. But three scans of his adrenal glands all came back negative.

Discouraged but not deterred, Lindsay did the only thing he could do: He dove back into the medical literature.

And he came up with a treasure.

Later he diagnosed a disorder doctors didn’t believe could exist

Lindsay suspected there might be something in his adrenal gland that acted like a tumor, but wasn’t one.

A fourth scan in 2006 showed his adrenals “glowing brightly,” Lindsay said, an abnormality consistent with his new theory.

Coghlan called Lindsay and said, “We found it!” The diagnosis: bilateral adrenal medullary hyperplasia.

In layman’s terms, it means the medullas, or inner regions, of his adrenal glands were enlarged and acting like tumors. His adrenal glands were producing way too much adrenaline.

Experts in the field doubted the diagnosis. But Coghlan put his professional reputation on the line to back it.

As Lindsay delved into more medical literature, he found only 32 recorded cases of bilateral adrenal medullary hyperplasia.

And he fixed on what seemed like a simple solution: If he could cut out the medullas of his adrenal glands — sort of like slicing into a hard-boiled egg and removing the yolk — his health would improve.

Dr. Chris Bauer, Lindsay’s personal physician, calls his ailment an “atypical presentation of a rare disease.”

“They don’t really write textbooks based on that,” Bauer said. “We were were all learning with Doug as we went along.”

Then he pioneered a new surgery

Lindsay finally came to a bold conclusion. “If there isn’t a surgery,” he decided, “I’m going to make one.”

His first big lead came in 2008. He found a 1980 study from a scientist at Georgia State University, which he summed up as: “You slice the rat’s adrenal gland with a razor blade and squeeze it so the medulla pops out like a pimple.”

Then he found that another version of the adrenal medulla extraction had been done at Harvard. Renowned professor Walter Bradford Cannon had performed the surgery on cats in 1926. Lindsay found records of the surgery being done on dogs as well.

He built a 363-page PDF which proposed a first-ever human adrenal medullectomy.

Then he spent the next 18 months working to find a surgeon who would oversee the unorthodox procedure.

Pioneering a new surgery is a high-wire act for ethical and financial reasons as well. Surgeons could risk losing their license by performing an unproven operation, especially if complications arose. And insurance companies tend to not reimburse patients for non-standard procedures.

Because many of the doctors in that specialized field knew each other, Lindsay was careful where he pitched the idea that might save his life.

Eventually he recruited a surgeon from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. In September 2010 Lindsay went to the university hospital, where the doctor successfully extracted one of his adrenal medullas.

Three weeks after the procedure, Lindsay could sit upright for three hours. By Christmas Eve, he had the strength to walk a mile to church.

As he stood in the back of the church during midnight Mass, it finally felt like hope was winning.

But progress was slow. In 2012, he underwent a second surgery at Washington University in St. Louis to remove the medulla from his remaining adrenal gland.

A year later, he was well enough to fly with friends to the Bahamas. It was the first time in his life the Midwesterner had seen the ocean.

By early 2014, he was coming off some of his meds.

Coghlan, his champion, lived just long enough to see Lindsay’s remarkable recovery. He died in 2015.

Now he’s helping other rare-disease patients

Against the odds, Lindsay had found a way to save himself.

But his mother was too delicate to be moved to another facility, let alone endure the surgery her son pioneered. She died in 2016.

She didn’t get to see him walk across the stage to graduate that year from Rockhurst University with a bachelor’s degree in biology, 16 years after he originally expected to begin his career.

Lindsay is now 41 years old. Many of the friends with whom he planned to graduate are now married, with kids in grade school.

“You can’t recapture the past,” Lindsay said.

Today he still lives in his childhood home in St. Louis. He needs to take nine medications per day, and his health is far from perfect, but he has his life back.

He’s not exactly the biology professor he dreamed of being at 21, but he’s not far off the mark. He’s leveraging his experience into a new career as a medical consultant.

“I couldn’t be an assistant manager at Trader Joe’s. I don’t have the physical ability for that,” Lindsay said. “But I can travel and give speeches and go for walks. And I can try to change the world.”

Doctors are turning to him to help them identify and treat rare diseases like his own.

“I’m a full professor at Stanford, and I don’t know these answers,” said Dr. Lawrence Chu, who found himself leaning on Lindsay when a rare disease patient came to him. “Doug was the expert consultant.”

Lindsay has spoken at medical schools, including Stanford and Harvard, and at a growing list of medical conferences. And he’s working on a case study to be published in the British Medical Journal.

With his gift for solving intractable problems, he hopes to help steer other patients with hard-to-treat diseases on a path toward wholeness.

“I got help from people,” he said, “and now I have to help people.”
