The Blackthorn charm:
The Blackthorn tree or sloe is a shrub native to Europe and several other places in the East. This trees poisonous thorns can cause sepsis, making this thorny hedge a very powerful symbol of protection and setting of protective boundaries.
This potent charm is used to protect the inhabitants of a home from curses, intrusions of any sort, attacks, outside interference, and all general malicious intent.
How to make:
Begin by taking a good piece of white or red string and remember… knots are a symbol of protection.
While tying the thorns to the string, recite the following spoken charms:
By knot of one, this spells begun
By knot of two, it cometh true
By knot of three, so mote it be
By knot of four, this power i store
By knot of five, this spell comes to life
By knot of six, this power i fix
By knot of seven, malicious power i lessen
By knot of eight, i seal the thieves fate!
Finally, pass the charm through a hoodfire/hoodlamp. Then through the smoke of incense three times. Then simply hang it in a window or near your hearth.
Blessed be!

kit marlowe earning a reputation as an immoral heretic while also capturing wholesome cottagecore vibes in passionate shepherd (his only original poem) surpasses "get you a man who can do both" and inspires me to BE THE BOTH I WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD
like yes my mind palace is a little cottage in the woods with ivy growing on the sides and a floral/herb garden and a brook somewhere nearby but it's also on the hedge and when you come inside it's decorated with bones and homemade pentagrams and bits of scavenged trash i use for osteomancy. under the cover of nightfall i do my rituals skyclad and use menstrual blood for scrying when tea leaves just won't cut it
thank u kit for the psychological liberation i really owe you one

Today, I’m enjoying some Strawberry Herer live resin in my vape, and reading about early modern witchlore. I’m still digesting this book, slowly, but I am glad that the author seems to share one of my pet theories.

The Sun Witch's Path
Whenever I get back into the flow of witchcraft, I always define my practice. I'm not sure why, I just do. Makes me feel very in control of my witchcraft. So, without further ado, these are the paths I take from in my electicism:
Air
Hearth
Green
Hedge
Kitchen
Solar/Lunar
Sigil
I am heavily connected to Air Witchery, and have always been. In my childhood, I used to talk directly into the wind and just vent out my frustrations or ask for advice. I hardly ever heard directly, but more so felt the Wind's companionship and motherly affection - trust me, I am aware that the air has a masculine association, but the Wind was always distinctly female to me.
Hearth, Green, and Kitchen witchcraft were the first types I learned about early in my practice. These paths reside in the home or forest, gathering their magic in places that encompass love and acceptance. This has always appealed to me, and allowed me to discreetly practice witchcraft without drawing attention. Green witchcraft also deals with communing or offering to Land Guardians, Land spirits, etc, which I find hard to do but incredibly interesting.
Hedge Witches combine green witchcraft and spirit work, essentially navigating the space between dimensions and communing with spirits. I haven't dabbled in Hedgecraft very often, mostly whenever I was warding before entering the astral plane or on Samhain, but I still value this aspect of my practice. Especially since I'm working with Hekate now.
Solar energy is hardly ever talked about, but in the past 3 years, I found myself connected more to the Sun than the moon. To me, the Sun is energy and vitality. Life and wonder. I prefer working with this sort of energy in my spellwork, and my connection to Apollo helps with this. Lunar energy, I use for other things. Protection, rebirth, new beginnings. Both of these celestial beings are ancient and powerful, with an infinite amount of energy and wisdom to share.
Sigils are quick, helpful, and easily disposable if push comes to show. They are also quite discreet, especially if you make your own sigils. Blend them in with doodles on a test for intelligence, blend your makeup into a sigil for glamour, or even trace it on an object for protection.
Another thing worth noting is that I am a religious witch, not secular. I am a Hellenic pagan / polytheist, worshipping Hekate, Apollo, Dionysus, and even Aphrodite. Hekate is a new addition to the bunch, but Apollo has been with me for a long, long time. Dionysus is also sort of new, but less so than Hekate. I passively worshipped Dionysus for the entire time I have been devoted to Apollo, but this winter I am going to be properly cultivating this relationship while Apollo is in Hyperborea. Aphrodite has been with me for awhile as well, and has been a great help. Even though I tried to break off my relationship with her, she is quite persistent and even when I wasn't trying to think of her, I was and was worshipping her with a fondness I didn't realise was there.

Witchcraft is a journey, one that requires patience and hard work. Not every tip or recipe is going to help, and what is one witches omen is another witches blessing. We are all different and magical and that is the beauty of being a Witch, combining anything we can to help each other and be our best selves.

I have a question regarding your answer on that witch labels post. It's nothing serious, just my curiosity piqued.
I was wondering what the difference between a cottage witch and a hearth witch was. I was under the impression that a hearth witch encompassed the whole house, rather than just the kitchen like kitchen witches. Domestic things like knitting (if i could figure it out lol), sweeping, cooking, growing herbs and spices, bathing, crafting soaps and powders, etc. What's the difference between that and a cottage witch?
Good question! (And bonus points for including the link!) This is a Your Mileage May Vary situation and UPG is ahead.
In my experience, a hearth witch deals with everything concerning the home. This covers the kitchen, the family, the animals, domestic matters, childcare, healing, maintenance, protection, money, and so on, with a particular focus on fire magic and the image of the hearthfire as the heart of the home. A hearth witch is the heart, soul, and hands of the home. It is their domain and woe betide the poor fool who crosses their threshold with ill intentions.
A cottage witch, on the other hand, deals with matters concerning the homestead as a whole. This includes everything to do with hearth, home, and family, as above, but also includes the garden, livestock, and care and maintenance of the land. This may also extend to building and maintaining positive relationships with one's neighbors as well. A cottage witch takes responsibility for the whole property and may claim surrounding areas as theirs to protect and care for as well. Same mindset, larger territory.
Mind you, this is my own take on the subject. Some witches use hearth witch and cottage witch interchangeably. (Notably, Ellen Dugan's description of cottage witchery sounds like hearthcraft with a few extra trappings.) Both have a focus on the home and its' occupants, both human and animal, and on keeping the heart of the home, however one defines it, a comfortable and welcoming place. Some hearth witches extend their work to the garden and the neighborhood, and some cottage witches work their craft in an apartment with no land to care for.
Both titles are nebulous, as are all labels applied to the various types of witchcraft, and are certainly not dependent on one's place of residence. For example, I started out calling myself a hearth witch when I still lived with family. Nowadays, with a home of my own, I tend to use the broader-feeling "cottage" label, even though we live in an apartment, and I'm working on learning about land maintenance from my in-laws, who have a small farm and some wooded acreage.
I tend to include hearthcraft under the "cottage" category, as I do with garden witchcraft and kitchen witchery. Hedgecraft is sort of a next-door-neighbor to cottagecraft in my mind, since it CAN deal with the homestead but is not necessarily focused on it, being an exploration of more wild and liminal spaces. I'm sure other practitioners would define these terms differently depending on their own practices and perspectives as well.
Hope this helps! 😊

honestly i think the most liberating part of witchcraft (TO ME) is the belief that yes this is what works for me and yes i do have some unshakable beliefs based on past experiences but also it could all really just be bullshit
like. i ask decks of cards for advice. i meditate with rocks in my hands or touching my skin. my experiences of being in the astral are vastly different from this person from this person from this person and instead of giving me imposter syndrome i'm just like "well but it's helpful to me so even if it is a crock who tf cares." there are old and ancient sigils but instead of using them i could just scribble my own on a napkin and rub it a little to activate it. my mom and i have recently been bonding over cooking and preparing meals together/for each other and she knows i've gotten into cooking magick lately. it's not really her thing but she lets me share fun facts as i go and i also made her an herbal spell bag yesterday and she said yes it did help her sleep!
like yeah i'll explain my beliefs and "defend myself" the best i can if someone wants to talk about it but. at the end of the day witchcraft could just as easily be seen as a fun stress relief hobby akin to baking or knitting as it could be seen a Way of Life or Connection to the World (IMO)
for some reason there's just something very freeing about that

In a gut-wrenching process of redeveloping and redefining my practice. Yes, the Goddess is there; she guides me to pleasure and transformation always. But I am feeling - again, maybe it’s that I’ve forgotten it, rather than feeling for the first time - the call to the City and to the spirits that live here, with me. I am seeking some sort of urban animistic practice - a nonanthropocentric urban ecology that seeks to encounter the spirits of the city and the land. I feel like maybe I’ve spent a lot of time reading/being around people really interested in tradcraft and hedgecraft, which are both types of craft that speak to me and call to me, but I still feel like those practices I’ve tried before require finding exceptional points of enchantment.
Yes, the big old wood that’s in the north of the city has been a space of power and the genus loci there have been generous and stern with me. But I need to find ways outside of the exceptional nature of a space. What spirits are in my garden, on my routes that I walk all the time?
And can I develop a practice that recognizes the dispossessed of my city as ancestors and spirits as equally important guides? I remember my pilgrimage to the Tower I took around my birthday last summer. I remember feeling the weight of them there, of nearly weeping in Lincoln too, putting my hands to gouges in walls made by them. I feel them when I walk in the East Ends, their ghosts press against my shoulders.
So that’s where I’m at with things, I guess. I am trying to square the interests I have in tradcraft and animism with the fact that I live in the city and feel a deep and profound connection with and love for the city; that the woods don’t call to me in the same way. But I do want my practice to attend to the land - and London is a forest and London was once swamp and meadow and woods - and I am really uninterested in technology as a practice method or tool honestly. So I’m in a place of research and experimentation. It’s all very early days, still.
Still. My early forays into research feel unsatisfactory: I’m struggling to find people doing it in ways I admire. Which is okay, and maybe even better than okay. It just also means that I’m feeling vexed by what turns up when you google and tumblr-search ‘urban magick’ or ‘urban witchcraft.’ So I think I’m going to try to document how I’m developing my practice.
My first order of business is to bring myself to take more walks, to have my pockets laden with offerings to leave when they feel appropriate. They need to be night walks, I think. My practice has always developed stronger and faster when it’s at night. To that end, I’m pairing this step with reading Night Walking: A Nocturnal History of London; and likely also finally finishing The People’s History of London, which I bought nearly 2 years ago now.
