The Forgotten Witch
Let me tell you the tale of the Forgotten Witch.
Chapter 1: The Prophecy
First of all, do you know Sylvia Pembroke? She is a seer in one of the portraits in the Grand Staircase.
Tumblr media
Throughout the game she makes different prophecies that foreshadow events in the game:
"Ancient secrets bring forth an age of magic with the rise of a new hero."
This one is about the whole plot of the game.
"I can sense someone close to you needs your help. Someone with the initial "S"."
That one is obviously about Sebastian.
"When what was lost has been found, the brother's betrayal will turn the tides of war."
That's when Lodgok finds the last of Bragbor's journal and tries to bring it to the MC. Ranrok discovers that he betrayed him, takes the journal and kills him. And by getting hold of the last journal this turns the tides of the war since Ranrok now knows where to find the last repository.
"When mentor and student collide a path must be chosen."
I think that one is about the final choice of the player, whether we follow the path of the Keepers and keep the repository closed and secret or we follow Isidora's path and try to use the ancient magic in the repository.
I think all of her prophecies can be explained by event in the game. And then there is this prophecy:
"When the forgotten one's true power is revealed bonds of trust will be broken."
And for this one, I couldn't think of a straighforward, obvious interpretation for it. And trying to find out who exactly this "forgotten one" is has lead me down quite the rabbit hole...
Now, the first thought is: the forgotten one must be Isidora. After all, all mentions and memories of her have been erased by the Keepers. What is her "true power" then? It could be her ability to rid people of their pain. And what about the bonds of trust that are broken? That's where it all starts to break down. The MC learns of Isidora's "true power" through the Keepers memories, there is no big revelation about Isidora that causes MC to loose trust in the Keepers or Fig or anyone else, really.
Someone on reddit had another interpretation. They believed the "bonds of trust" that were broken were between Rookwood and Ranrok. When Rookwood discovered what the repositories they were looking for really were (Isidora's "true power") and what Ranrok intended to use them for the fragile alliance between Rookwood and Ranrok shattered ("broken bonds of trust"). But rewatching the scene in the mine when Ranrok takes bragbor's last journal I think it's pretty clear that Rookwood realizes that his alliance with Ranrok is over the moment he understands that Ranrok has now found the location of the last repository. He realizes then that he has lost all of his usefullness to Ranrok and that the tentative partnership they had is over. Hence why he tries to kill Ranrok right after (before Ranrok can try to kill him). I don't think any "bonds of trust" are broken here because there was no trust to begin with and there is no revelation of a "true power". Rookwood already knew they were searching for repositories of ancient magic.
But thinking along the same lines, maybe the broken bonds of trust could be between Sebastian and MC when Sebastian realizes that Isidora could use ancient magic to cure people of their pain (the "true power" that is revealed) and yet MC refuses to ask the Keepers about that power or refuses to use it to cure Anne. But I think that is stretching it. Even though MC and Sebastian have a little fight about this I hardly think that you could say that "bonds of trust" are broken.
So maybe we should go right back to the beguining. Maybe the "forgotten one" is not Isidora but someone else entirely...
Chapter 2: The Statue
How do you go about discovering the identity of someone who was forgotten? You go search through the game files for clues of course!
And low and behold, there is an asset called "ForgottenStatue", could it be related to our "forgotten one"?
Tumblr media
I think the name of this particular asset is quite significant. Usually any asset in the game is identified with a letter. There are plenty of assets called "SmallStatue_A", "SmallStatue_B", "WallPlaque_D", etc. Few assets are given actual names like this.
And besides, don't you recognize this statue? It's the statue that is standing in the alcove by the water in the transfiguration courtyard!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's the statue that Prof. Ronen had us repair at the very beguining of the game after learning reparo. Prof. Ronen says this statue alledgedly represents heartbreak and that perhaps a jilted lover, seing it and finding it too accurate, could have lashed out and destroyed it. But maybe that is not the full story. Maybe there is another reason it was destroyed, perhaps so that no one could ever recognize this statue and find anything out about the witch it represents.
So here we have a statue of a forgotten witch. No one really knows for sure who she is, what the statue represents. Looking at the clothing that she is wearing, it seems that she is from really ancient times (could be ancient greece, could be ancient rome,...) and alledgedly she had her heart broken at some point.
Chapter 3: The Dagger
The statue is not the only thing I found in the game files. There is also a very interesting asset called "SM_Evil_ForgottenWitch_Dagger". Again, note how this asset has an actual name (as opposed to just "SM_Dagger_A") and also that it is even labelled as "Evil".
Tumblr media
Sorry for the image being so dark but I really wanted to show how the rune on the dagger is glowing. From what I can understand by looking at other in-game assets, the glow we see on the rune means there will be some VFX applied to it in game. So obviously, the rune etched into the dagger is significant somehow. The dagger is also very ornate. And, because it is labelled as "Evil", we can deduce that it is some king of artifact used for dark magic.
The gives us some new information about our "forgotten one". First of all it seems that she is a witch (that is also consistent with the "Forgotten Statue" that is of a woman) and she practised the dark arts. Could this be what her "true power" is? Some secret form of dark magic?
For the longest time I thought that this dagger was just part of some cut content, that it was not used in the game. Until someone found this exact dagger in a the middle of a standing stone circle near Marunweem Lake!
They also identified the rune on it as Mannaz rune. It's an Elder Futhark rune meaning 'mankind'. Elder Furthar dates back to the first century which is coherent with the type of dress of the forgotten statue. These runes also apparently had deep spiritual significance. Mannaz represents humanity, community and cooperation. It could also represent intelligence, mind and memory.
I went and found the dagger in-game myself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's in the middle of standing stones on a flat circluar stone engraved with some weird symbols reminiscent of alchemy symbols. Also note the human skeleton that could hint at some dark ritual maybe involving a sacrifice.
I don't know if there are other places like this one elsewhere in Hogwarts Valley where we can also find the dagger. I have not found any yet but let me know if you have!
But there's more! In the game files, the asset for the dagger is found within the folder of props for "Sanctum_Dungeons". These are any dungeons related to ancient magic (like the keeper trials). So, how exactly is this dagger related to ancient magic and the Keepers?
Chapter 4: Ancient Magic
There is yet another place where the "ForgottenWitch" appreas within the game files. There are assets for stone columns used to build the environments for the ancient magic dungeons which are the Keeper trials, the place below the restricted section when we find the book and the cave we go to with Richard Jackdaw to find the missing pages and get access to the Map Chamber.
First there is a set of assets called "SM_SanctumDun_Column_Natural" which look like stone swirls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there is a set of assets called "SM_SanctumDun_ColumnFlair_Forgotten_Witch" which look a little more ornate with some developped "spikes" (sort of looking like thorns on the stem of a rose) but still made of stone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And lastly, there is a set of assets called "SM_SanctumDun_ColumnFlair_Keepers" that are even more ornate and detailed with spikes and some sort of tendrils. These columns also glow (again I believe indicating some VFX being applied to it). There are also some gold trims that can be added.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To me, this looks like some kind of evolution of art style or archetictural style over time. As the technique is developped over the centuries (from 'Natural stone' to the work of the Forgotten Witch in antiquity and to the work of the Keepers in the late middle ages), more and more ornate designs are made possible.
I believe the "Forgotten Witch" could wield ancient magic. Like we see the Keepers do, she used ancient magic back in antiquity to transfigure the world around her, build elaborate colums. But then she also used her ancient magic for some dark purpose. This is the "true power" that the profecy refers to. What about the bonds of trust that are broken, then? I believe the events of this particular prophecy have not happened yet. Someone (and lets be honest, it's probably the Keepers because they are the only ones who seem to know anything about ancient magic) knows about this Forgotten Witch and the dark magic she used but they kept that secret from the MC. And when this secret is finally revealed, uncovering a dark history of ancient magic, the bonds of trust between MC and the Keepers will be broken.
After all, Isidora herself, another forgotten witch, could have left us a warning when she wrote on the wall of the Undercroft: "Percival is hiding somehing".

Prompt 28 - Skinny Dip
@jegulus-microfic March 28 Word count 1058
Previous part First part
Regulus woke with his legs tangled with James’s. He’d left a note for his parents telling them they’d had a lead in the assignment Voldemort had given them. In fact, he was certain that Remus was extremely close to their quarry.
James stirred. He pulled Regulus closer to his body and buried his face in his chest.
“Mmmmm, I could get used to this.” He peppered kisses all over Regulus’s chest. Regulus didn’t put up any fight, enjoying the moment far too much.
“Come on. We’d better get up. We have a lot to do today.” He pulled away from James and stretched his whole body, which just brought James right back to him. “James, get off. We have to go.” He giggled as James snuffled into his hair.
“No, don’t want to. I’m just gonna keep you here in this bed with me.”
A loud banging at the door soon stopped them.
“Come on, love birds. We’ve got priceless heirlooms to destroy.” Evan called as he banged on Sirius and Remus’s door and his sisters.
It took a while for all of the Thestrals to gather that morning. But eventually, they were apparating into the caves outside of Hogsmeade.
They followed the Gryffindors into the forest as they knew where they were going. It had made more sense to go together this way than to walk up to Hagrid’s cabin, seeing as how they’d all ended up at Evan’s last night.
Regulus held the small chest tightly in his arms. He wasn’t about to lose them now, not after everything they’d been through to get them.
It took less than an hour to get to the part of the forest the Marauders wanted to use. They stopped in an almost perfectly round clearing. You could feel the magic thrumming through the area. It was ancient and swirled around them. Regulus placed the chest in the centre of the grassy circle and unlocked it. The ancient magic reacted to the dark magic within. It became hostile. The forest around them darkened, blocking out what little light there was.
Remus stepped forward, pressing his hands against one of the trees that lined the clearing. Regulus stared in awe as the magic slowly backed off and formed a protective barrier between them and the rest of the forest.
Remus smiled as he took his hands away from the tree.
“Thank you.” He whispered.
“What was that?” Lily asked the question the others must have been thinking. Well, Regulus, Barty and Evan. Everyone else didn’t seem so shocked.
“Werewolf,” Remus shrugged. “I’m more in tune with the natural magics than most. The forest knows what we have, and it isn’t happy. I told it we have come to destroy them, so the forest is going to keep us contained in here until the Horcruxes are all gone. So please don’t try and pass the border, or you’ll be sorry.” He looked pointedly at Barty when he said the last part.
Regulus tuned out whatever Barty had replied. He took the Gaunt ring out of the box and laid it on the grass.
“Are you ready then?” He asked. They immediately formed a circle around him and watched as Regulus poured Basilisk venom from one of the vials onto it.
A thick black liquid oozed out of it, and a blood-curdling scream. They all ducked for cover, pressing their hands to their ears. But nothing happened. When they looked back, all that was left of the ring was a twisted mass of blackened metal and the stone. Regulus cast a few spells over it.
“The Horcrux is gone, but I don’t understand why the venom didn’t destroy the stone.” He handed it to James to take care of while he set up the next Horcrux. They could deal with that later.
Next up was the diary. It reacted much the same as the ring had. There was, however, a lot more of the inky liquid seeping out, as though the notebook had been filled with writing that they just hadn’t been able to see.
Regulus was glad they’d managed to gather as much Basilisk venom as they had, as it looked like they’d be using most, if not all, of it.
Hufflepuffs cup twisted and melted into an unrecognisable blob, the fragment of soul shattering and dissolving into nothing.
He held the diadem in his hands. It was truly beautiful he didn’t want to destroy it. But for the sake of the wizarding world, he had to.
More Basilisk venom dropped onto the delicate tiara, and it spilt and cracked into three pieces before it melted as the wailing scream pierced their ears again.
Regulus reached into the chest and took out the last Horcrux. The Locket. He placed it on the ground and looked at his friends, who stood around him in a loose circle, pointing their wands at the Horcrux.
“Last one. Are we ready?” They nodded, and he raised the final vial of venom. But before he could let a single drop fall, the locket opened, and his mother appeared before him. He stumbled backwards, somehow managing not to spill the venom.
Walburga sneered at him. Her mouth opened, and Regulus knew whatever she was about to say would devastate him.
Sirius blocked his view, grabbing the vial and pouring the entire thing into the open locket.
“Piss off you evil bitch!” He snarled. Walburga screamed in a vortex of black smoke before vanishing into nothing. The locket was gone. Obliterated by the amount of venom poured on it.
They’d done it. All the Horcruxes were gone. Shakily, he got to his feet and was barrelled over by his friends as they all whooped and cheered in triumph.
The forest’s magic let them pass, now happier. It pressed close, almost like a hug, before releasing them.
They came upon a stream that fed a large pool of water as they walked back to the edge of the forest.
“Well, I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m going to skinny dip in that pool!” Barty cried as he vanished his clothes and dove into the clear water. “Come on, it’s refreshing, especially after that madness.” He jabbed his thumb back towards the clearing. The others looked at each other and, after a collective shrug, joined Barty in the pool.

lore expansion, fuck yeah
I've really been enjoying expanding on Ancient Magic lore (and straight up making some of it up myself lol) through my fic. I generally disliked the Keeper storyline and felt the concept had so much wasted potential. If anyone's interested, here's a scene from the latest chapter talking about it a little. Read here on AO3 or under the stars.
Tumblr media
Fig nodded and conjured a few chairs. “Sit, sit! We have much to discuss.” He gathered the errant papers littering his desk and shuffled them into a stack. “Miriam’s research on Ancient Magic was far more extensive than I predicted. I’ve only had the chance to read through a small portion. However, I have some information I think you’ll find helpful, Vera.”
She leaned forward. “What have you learned? Does it relate to the maps you sent me over break?”
“Indeed it does! Miriam’s research spoke more of the hotspots. She described them as ‘honing spots’ of sorts. They seem to be places where people who wield Ancient Magic can visit to gain mastery over their power.”
He rested his elbows on the desk. “I'll provide some background, first. According to her notes, Ancient Magic was more common hundreds of years ago. Mind, it wasn’t something everyone could wield. But it wasn’t a once-in-a-century phenomenon like it seems to be today.”
“In fact, all of Hogwarts’ founders possessed the ability to wield this type of magic. As for why this isn’t common knowledge, well, knowledge itself only lasts as long as the records detailing it. The founders lived centuries upon centuries ago. Any records left are either decrepit and difficult to access, or beyond restoring.”
Tumblr media
Fig took a long drink from his tea. “But it gets even more interesting. As I said, what we now call Ancient Magic was not common, but not rare, either. It is thought that over time, magic has evolved to exchange raw power for stability. Ancient Magic is, simply put, a less refined yet stronger version of what we possess today. What we have now is far easier to use, but relatively weaker. Though,” he said, “still nothing to look down on, of course!”
Vera, Sebastian, and Ominis stared with wide eyes, digesting the new information. Vera spoke first. “So…these hotspots you’ve mentioned were used by people even a thousand years ago?”
Fig nodded, a proud gleam in his eye. “Astute as ever, Vera. Those who possessed Ancient Magic had to put great effort into mastering it - this was no easy task. Now, I’m afraid I don’t have much information for you beyond that. All I’ve found relating to them is…well, Miriam’s translation was a bit confusing here, but they exist to teach lessons. By sitting at these spots past wielders would learn how to control their magic better.”
“Since your manifestation of Ancient Magic is volatile at the best of times, visiting the hotspots is at least worth a shot. They may help you manage your power better. And as grave as this sounds, I fear we face great danger ahead. This is a lot to put on the shoulders of a witch barely of age. But I fear the uptick in poacher activity you’ve described is only the surface of something far larger.” He sighed, worry settling into the lines in his face. “And I wish I could do more to help you. But I will continue to go through Miriam’s research as I have time.”
Tumblr media
Next chapter up tomorrow, where Vera and co will find what the first hotspot has in store for them!

When MC asks the Keepers for help to cure Anne:
I hate how we didn’t even get a chance to ask them about Anne.
Tumblr media
MC: My friend, Sebastian. His sister, Anne was cursed by Victor Rookwood she feels extreme bouts of pain and it’s slowly killing her. She’s his only family member left. Is there a way the Ancient Magic I have could reverse the curse or heal her in some way?
The Keepers: That’s very sad indeed. Anyway, you must see our memories and go through yet another trial in order for us to trust you with such magic.
MC: Are you kidding me?

Theory about Undercroft notes
This week I decide to play again HL, and for the first time I saw this:
Tumblr media
Those notes in the wall apear after we use that mirror in Isidora's house. The draw in the wall is the same as the key we useat the beginning.
I belive that isn't Isidora who have put that draw there, because I belive that the key was made after her death.
The same for Sebastian. He never saw the key. At this point in history he had not yet seen the rune symbols, nor the mechanisms we used in the Jackdaw mission, and these drawings were already on the boards. So is impossible to be him.
So i thought about Percival, but I saw this post of @the-slytherin-paramour:
Tumblr media
it clearly say 'Percival is hiding something'
And he wouldn't doubt himself.
So... if it wasn't Seb, Isidora or other keeper, it must be our MC.
These notes on the blackboards appear as we progress in the missions, so I believe it is the Mc who wrote them.
But what you guys think?
Edit: For those who want to know where it is:

A secret society for ancient magic?
I think many people have noticed the statues of women with their head covered by a hood and carrying staffs with sun and moon symbols on them that are scattered throughout the dungeons we explore in the game.
Here they are for exemple in Korrow Ruins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All the possible types of hooded statues and the staffs they hold.
Tumblr media
But I haven't seen anyone try to theorize what these statues could mean... (If there is such a theory around that I have missed please let me know!).
For starters, do you know where several of these statues are found? In front of Isidora Morganach's house in Feldcroft!
That's right! The statues are placed all along the path leading from the main road to the entrance of the house. It's almost like they were placed there to show the way to... something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, once you enter Isidora's house, one statue is placed right in front of the entrance to the Undercroft. Coincidence? I think not!!!
Tumblr media
The same statues can be found in several other dungeons in the game. They are present in the mine in Cragcroftshire where Isidora has one of her little workshops (the place where we find the second canvas piece). They are also found in the sanctuary where the snidgets are kept or other places not related to Isidora or magical creatures (Korrow Ruin, Henrietta's Hideaway,...)
What are these statues? What do they mean? Who placed them there?
My current theory is that they are the remnant symbols of a secret society that Isidora was working with (or that Isidora even founded?) to help with her work on ancient magic. But who knows? My investigation is ongoing!
