Happy Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day! This year, I got out to Hobby's Deli in Newark. I got the hot pastrami sandwich, of course (pictured), and followed it up with a corned beef sandwich.
Both were incredible.
I wrote it up on the blog. Give it a read here!

Houses crumble, money devalues, and estates get split amongst children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. But a story of a family persisting can only get stronger with time, and it can’t be withheld. When you write your own chapter in that story, you receive and pass along at the same time.
For this year’s Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day, I visited Hobby’s Deli in Newark, a deli that’s been around the block so much that they named the block after it. I wrote about the meat, the history, and what it all means over on my blog. Give it a read!

National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day
There are few things that are more alluring for food lovers than the smell of a hot pastrami sandwich that is winging its way across a restaurant. For those that salivate at the thought, celebrating National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day is a must.
National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day is a celebration of the mouthwatering, edible treat that is the much-loved hot pastrami sandwich. A shining example of culinary beauty, this delicious delicacy is created using thin slices of piping hot pastrami that are served on rye bread, usually topped with melted Swiss cheese slices, a helping of Russian dressing, and a pickle on the side.
What some people might consider to be just a sandwich, other folks recognize this sandwich as the perfect (and only) reason to celebrate on this day. Get ready to enjoy National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day!
History of National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day
A staple must-try dish for those visiting the iconic American city of New York (where the sandwich originated), the hot pastrami sandwich has a rich history, and it has inspired many a chef to experiment with its treasured ingredients. It’s rare for a simple snack to bear such significance and carry such gravitas in the gastronomic world, and this is why National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day came into being.
Pastrami is a very popular meat product, one that seems to have originated in the Jewish communities of Romania. Pastrami comes from the Romanian word ‘pastrama,’ which is a derivative of the word ‘pastra,’ a word indicating that a food has been conserved or preserved.
Usually made from beef, pastrami started as a means of making meat last longer in the days before refrigeration became commonplace. To make pastrami, raw meat is placed in a salty brine and then partly dried before the intense flavor is added using various seasonings, such as mustard, black pepper, coriander, garlic, onion and more. The meat is then smoked and cured before it eventually lands on plates served in front of hungry, but ultimately very happy, customers.
Pastrami shot to fame across the world in the late 1800s as a result of migration. And this sandwich is now a staple ingredient on the menus of trendy cafes, traditional sandwich shops, delicatessens and street food stalls.
The first hot pastrami sandwich of note is believed to have been produced by kosher butcher, Sussman Volk, in 1887. Though Volk was a Lithuanian immigrant who ran his own deli, he had received the recipe from a Romanian friend. The story goes that pastrami became very popular, and it was Volk who then began serving it on rye bread, making the beginnings of the sandwich that it has become today.
The classic hot pastrami sandwich features slices of meat, freshly cut bread (usually rye), mustard, and pickles. Over the years, many have attempted their own versions, adding and subtracting ingredients to add flavor or a dash of creativity. Pastrami features in several dishes, but the traditional hot pastrami sandwich is by far its most high-profile use.
It’s no secret that the hot pastrami sandwich has something of a cult following (just ask Joey Tribbiani, the sandwich-loving character in the hit show Friends), so it’s no wonder that hundreds of foodies look forward to the arrival of National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day!
How to Celebrate National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day
There’s no better way to celebrate National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day than enjoying your own sumptuous sandwich of pastrami on rye. Try out these other ideas for celebrating the day:
Host a Hot Pastrami Sandwich Party
Recreate the recipe and host a party at home for friends and fellow pastrami aficionados. Put out a sandwich bar (filled with rye bread, pastrami, and toppings) and then guests can build their own to just their preferred specifications. Put a little toaster oven at the end of the line for everyone to be able to heat up their sandwiches. Or, for those who don’t feel like making food, feel free to cater it in through a local deli!
Enjoy Pastrami Sandwiches with Coworkers
Order in to the office for an interesting take on a working lunch. Or book a table at one of the leading pastrami sandwich shops in the local area and let an expert do the cooking for you and a group of colleagues.
Learn Fun Facts About Pastrami
Impress folks with interesting bits of trivia and fun facts about the featured meat in the Hot Pastrami Sandwich. Get started with these bits of information that can be shared and passed on for the day:
The oldest surviving New York deli is Katz’s Delicatessen, which has operated continuously since its founding in 1888. They are famous for their Stuffed Pastrami Sandwich–and for the fact that Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal filmed a scene there in the 1989 movie, When Harry Met Sally. Crystal was said to have been munching on a pastrami sandwich while the famous scene was being filmed.
Two different songs about pastrami were recorded in the 1960s. Hot Pastrami (1962) by The Dartells, and Hot Pastrami with Mashed Potatoes (1963) by Joey Dee and the Starlighters.
The Travel Channel’s Food Wars show dedicated an entire episode to this sandwich, all about the New York Pastrami Wars.
The world pastrami eating record is held by American Joey Chestnut, who won by eating 25 pastrami sandwiches (7 ounces each) in the span of 10 minutes.
Visit the Annual Pastrami Festival
Held each year in Warsaw, Poland, this festival features pastrami served in a variety of ways, whether traditional or unconventional. Make plans to visit this capital and largest city in Poland, and get some authentically created pastrami dishes from this region of eastern Europe where it all began.
Whatever the day involves, make sure this much-loved meat product is the star of the show. Pastrami is a well-known crowd-pleaser with a global following, so why not reach out to the wider community of fans and share photos, recipes and recommendations via social media and forums?

Kirishima
Starbucks . ° •
He’s just so happy to be able to make people their favorite drinks.
It’s kind of endearing how he loves the shop as much as he does and he doesn’t even like coffee. Sometimes he’ll be curious about the taste of the various coffees he’s made.
He knows what it’s like to have a messed up order (and misspelled name) so he’s very meticulous with how he serves every order.
When writing a customers name on a cup, he’ll draw little doodles beside it.
Because of his bubbly personality tons of regulars flood the shop whenever he works. If he’s off shift, the shop is ridiculously empty.
His manager makes sure to keep him up front at all times because he brings in good money.
“Where’s Kirishima? The shop’s practically dead.”
“It’s his off day sir.”
Sero
Hot Topic/Spencer’s . ° •
You can’t tell me he wouldn’t work at one of these stores.
I can just imagine him wearing his usual clothes with a little employee name tag on his shirt as he talks your head off about his favorite bands at checkout.
“Look all I’m saying is Sleeping with Sirens were way ahead of their time. Gotta pay respect ya know?”
Will 100% be nosey about what you’re buying if it interests him in any way. Getting a graphic tee of your favorite artist? He’s all over it asking when you first stanned.
He finally found out what was at the back of Spencer’s and won’t stop cracking jokes about it.
Makes use of his employee discounts and shows up the next day wearing a shirt he got off the display for 75% off.
Kaminari
GameStop . ° •
Self explanatory really. Denks is such a dude’s dude he loves all types of games so why not work where he can be surrounded by them all the time?
He works cash and restocks merchandise, games, rentals and such.
When he first realized how broke he was he thought “getting a job” meant he was gonna have to slave away in an office somewhere crunching numbers. Who knew he’d have so much fun at work.
He’s practically best friends with his co-workers… except his discord mod manager. He doesn’t talk to him very much.
He chucks it up with customers who come up to him asking for the latest drops or game recommendations. He knows the ins and outs of their products and always points them in the right direction based on their preferences.
“Oh you’re wanting something similar to Overwatch? Whatever you do, don’t go Valorant. It’s kinda sucky really. Here, Apex is so much better, especially if you main Seer.”
Bakugou
McAllister’s . ° •
Okay now stay with me, it sounds random as hell to say he’d work at a deli but it makes PERFECT sense.
He’s got skill in the kitchen and I feel like he can make a mean sandwich. Bakugou as a butcher also makes sense.
When he first starts working at the deli, his manager puts him on cashier and he hates it. Having to listen to overly complicated orders drives him batty.
Needless to say, his manager put him in the kitchen after that. And thank god for that because he prefers it in the back anyways.
He secretly loves cooking for people so although he might gripe about an insane amount of pastrami going on one sub, he knows someone will eat well because of his efforts.
“What kind of a shit sandwich is this? Shit’s pissing me off I’m not making this.”

How good are the Stardust Crusaders at cooking?
irrelavant author's note: hi everyone! I've been super duper swamped recently with university just starting (and my 18th birthday), so please forgive me for inactivity! I'm having second thoughts about posting the Jotaro x Reader fic, I'm just a wee bit insecure about my romantic writing, hence the extreme lack of romantic anything that's original. I'm working on making some headings and visuals for my headcanons in the meantime. Also, I'm a decent way through SBR, so hopefully, I can start adding SBR characters into my writing. Enjoy :)
all characters are written in the time of SDC, so these do not apply to young Joseph and 4taro on
Jotaro Kujo
Okay hear me out, he's actually a pretty decent chef!
Holly helped him learn the basics when he was younger
Since he learned the basics, he cooks once a week for his mom and always will as much as he can
He's no five-star chef, but his food tastes pretty good!
He knows a lot about spice combinations for some reason
Signature/Favorite dish to prepare - Gyudon
Noriaki Kakyoin
He does not know a lot about cooking from scratch
Poor boy needs a recipe for things like spaghetti and instructions for mashed potatoes
He just wants to make sure he has it right!!
He cooked for the Crusaders one night with what little supplies they had and it was definitely food
He was not allowed to cook again
I feel like he likes cold/lukewarm foods rather than hot foods
he's very good at making simple foods taste great though
Oh, that instant ramen you packed? It looks and tastes like it's fresh from a restaurant once Kakyoin prepares it
Signature/Favorite dish to prepare - Soba (served cold)
He also definitely has a major sweet tooth
Muhammed Avdol
Now this is a five star chef
Could open a restaurant if he wanted to
He can cook any kind of cuisine, and if he's unfamiliar and it turns out wrong it still tastes delicious
He can make food out of literally anything around him
It’s everyone’s favorite when it’s his night to cook
Gets into debates/competitions with Polnareff about who the better cook is
His cooking is too spicy for Joseph sometimes (he used red pepper and garlic in a simple dish one time)
Signature/Favorite dish to prepare - Kofta and Kebab, or sushi
Jean Pierre Polnareff
We got another five star chef up in this bitch!!
Could also open a restaurant if he wanted to
He has a sweet tooth 100% for cakes/macarons
He’s a great chef, but has a taste and talent for French cuisine, so its rare to find him cooking during the 50 day trip
He’s not a picky eater but super critical of everything he eats (he’s whiny)
Signature/Favorite dish to prepare - Terrine
Joseph Joestar
He’s got it down, but like not as incredible as Polnareff or Avdol
When it’s his night to cook, he can work with what he has around him pretty well
It’s not melt-in-your-mouth delicious, but its still pretty good
He does have a few specific meals down really well though, specifically some Italian dishes because it reminds him of the past, and the heavy influence of Italian food in New York
He makes a mean sandwich, his sub sandwiches are unlike any other, and if you ask him to make a pastrami on rye or a patty melt it’ll taste like it was made at home
He also makes a god tier American Country breakfast, it’s the best eggs, bacon, and flapjacks you’ll ever have
Signature/Favorite dish to prepare - Squid Ink Spaghetti

…can I request smt with Jeno like going on a picnic date that leads to him getting all touchy and needy…?
Oooo this is cute!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warning: Suggestive, kinda pervy!jeno ???, hinting switch!jeno
─────────(.◜◡◝)
It's 81° outside, you and jeno decided to go on a picnic since the weather was so nice. You laid the baby blue towel on the green grass while jeno had the food baskets in his hand placing them on the corners of the towel so it won't blow away.
"So glad I decided to bring sunscreen." Jeno spoke breaking the silence. You watched him take the pastrami and cheese sandwiches out of the baskets and the fruit bowls along with the sugary sodas and occasional energy drinks.
"Damn it's 81° degrees going up to 90°" You squint your eyes at your phone from the sunny vision.
"Got the water." Jeno smiles shaking the two bottles in his hand.
You smile back at him before he settle down sitting right next to you, he eyed your figure as you took pictures. You matched with him today wearing a pink body fitted dress that only came up to your thighs with white lacing on the hem of the dress, slits on the sides of the dress exposing more of your thighs. You had a mini sweater that previously was on you but it got too hot so you wrapped it around your waist. The white lace also coming around your boob area, your cleavage being on display.
"You are so pretty." Jeno says kissing your cheek, he placed his hand on your thigh kissing you more. He grabbed your attention enough making you turn your head so his next kiss was connected to your lips.
"Jeno—lets—eat" You say in between kisses.
"I can't when you look this good." Jeno says sneakily snaking his hand on your waist, his neediness made you slightly slip on your hand. Jeno kissed your neck sucking at it leaving small marks.
"Oh my god Jen— we're in public!" You squealed trying to have him think rationally.
"What's wrong with a boyfriend just kissing up on his woman?" Jeno questioned before smooching your exposed chest. At this point, you just let him smooch on your exposed skin. You guys were situated by a large tree that had a nice shade, the large log gave you some what privacy from the rest of the open land and past byers.
Jeno's sneaky hand buried itself under your dress rubbing circles on your clothed clit generously, you gasped as you couldn't really believe your boyfriend was doing this sort of thing.
"You are so pretty, please moan for me baby." Jeno pleaded, he kissed behind you ear and you let out a whine but it was barely audible.
"Oh c'mon love I know you can do better." Jeno added pressure to your clit, his other busy hand fondled its way to your breast.
"Jeno— I'm- we are in public" You cried out, Jeno just hummed to that as he felt a new wetness stick to your panties. He snatched his hand out of your dress, you were confused that why he stopped so soon since he was menace and loved to see you suffer sometimes. That's until you seen a family walk past you two, he flashed a smile at them and so did you trying not to looks so suspicious.
You glanced at his tense body, you realized his hard on and you decided to take matters into your own hands. You glide your hands over his erection sensually, kindly jerking off the dick print on his Grey slacks. His hands flew to yours trying to pace you but you didn't budge.
"Oh shit please—" Jeno held in a breath, you raised an eyebrow.
"Please what love?" You smirked at his slight submissive actions.
"Please let me c-cum" Jeno squeezed his eyes shut before returning them back to your lewd acts.
"Cum? I barely did anything baby" You said with a toothy grin.
Maybe this was one of those days jeno was going to let you take the lead.
─────────────(.◜◡◝)
I'm so sorry that it took me so long to respond, I've been kinda busy and the lack of ideas to make this decent was not registering, so, if this is not as good I'm super sorry I'm very preoccupied as of rn.

For many Jews, eating potato latkes on Hanukkah is non-negotiable, whether store-bought or made from scratch. But what should we be eating with them?
I’m not talking about the old applesauce vs. sour cream debate (I’m team neither), or about nibbling on a latke while holding a glass of bubbly at a chic Hanukkah soiree (I’m team exhausted mom in bed by 9). I’m talking about practical, everyday stuff: How can latkes be incorporated into a balanced, filling, seasonal meal that won’t leave you nauseous?
The answer was harder to find than I’d anticipated; most people I asked were similarly stumped.
After much contemplation, research and a deep-dive into The Nosher’s Hanukkah archives, here are 13 ways to turn latkes into a complete meal — from the centerpiece of a festive breakfast to a side dish alongside classic brisket.
Crockpot Sweet and Sour Brisket
Throw this together in the morning before work and let the promise of a hearty dinner get you through your day. Make sure to let the flavorful gravy soak into your latkes.
French Onion Brisket
Drawing inspiration from French onion soup, this modern twist on a classic braised brisket is even better when it’s made a day ahead. Serve with your favorite steamed veg.
Juicy Instant Pot Brisket
Tender, sweet-and-savory brisket that’s ready in two hours. The best use for your Instant Pot.
Perfect Roast Chicken
All the secrets, straight from a bubbe’s mouth.
Quick Skillet Roast Chicken
An easy one-skillet chicken for the soul, complete with veggies. Let the latkes soak up all the schmaltzy pan drippings.
Za’atar Fried Chicken with Spicy Thyme Honey
Why not go all in and match fried with fried? Hanukkah fare doesn’t get much better than this herby, succulent, shatteringly crisp fried chicken.
Roast Goose
Hear me out! Decadent, golden roast goose is a long-forgotten Hanukkah tradition from the Middle Ages, but the flavors more than hold up today.
Israeli-Style Turkey Pastrami
Salty, sweet, spiced and ready in a flash. Serve warm, sliced, with mustard and a salad. I recommend this mayo-free Russian health salad for optimal crunch.
Latke Deli Sandwiches
Sub the rye bread in your favorite deli sandwich for two latkes for the ultimate Hanukkah treat. Warning: not for the fainthearted.
Latke Hotdish
A twist on the beloved casserole from the Upper Midwest, this hotdish is topped with mini latkes instead of tater tots. Filled with brisket and a whole load of veg, this is a great way to feed a crowd.
Everything Bagel Latkes
Aka breakfast latkes. You can’t go wrong with topping your latkes with dill-y, lemony cream cheese, lox and everything bagel seasoning. Poached egg optional, but encouraged.
Latke Poutine
Inspired by New York’s Mile End Deli circa 2017, top your latkes with cheese curds and gravy a la classic Canadian poutine. The real miracle of Hanukkah.
Latke Board
A festive take on hot girl dinner (or post-school snack time), this board proves that it only takes a few store-bought additions to turn latkes into an entire meal.

Wellness Wednesday:
Cleaning Out My Closet Fridge
Part of my wellness journey is working on my financial wellness - What are my spending habits? What can I do differently? What can I cut out?
Couple weeks ago I challenged myself to use up as much as groceries/pantry supplies before buying more groceries - maybe meal prep here and there.
Well, I've been doing good on clearing out the freezer - working on the fridge and pantry now.
I noticed I had an abundance of deli meat and breads laying around - so - I was very conscious about eating up those foods first before they went bad.
To be honest I was little more conscious this week because not too long ago I had entire loaf of bread get moldy and I just despise when that happens.
So - I at a ton of sammies this week. Really spiced it up by changing my breads, meats, and cheeses - never got boring.
Other added benefit - I saw significant drop on my weekly grocery bill. A practice I want to entertain more in the future.
Another step to help out my pocket book is I made the decision not to buy any more expensive nuts - aka - my Wonderful's Pistachios. I am going to see if I can find a more cost effective snack alternative... Plus, I still have plenty to finish off in my cabinets.
Beyond my wallet and weekly diet - I broke the 2 week plateau streak and hit some weight loss (slightly over 4 pounds). Felt good considering I didn't do anything besides partake in some extra deli meats.
Sleep-wise - man-oh-man - I need to sleep. I hate how this is a constant battle.
Socially - saw some fam - good times/stories/jokes - and - tomorrow I plan on seeing some good friends at the movies... and hope to enjoy said movies.

Pastrami is a well-known crowd-pleaser with a global following, so why not reach out to the wider community of fans and share photos, recipes and recommendations via social media and forums?

re: Frankie's Subs........ I have to say this. I lived in in Massachusetts for like a year and I would never ever ever go back except to go to this deli. It is family owned and family run, over 50 years old, and when I was there, they only took cash and they were/are a proper Italian(-American) deli... and every day at lunch time, you could go and they served a sub. This ain't fuckin' Subway where you have it your way, this is their specific grinder with their specific meats with their specific dressing and they had them wrapped in white paper in two metal bins and the only choice you had was hots or no hots (as in peppers). The place was PACKED at lunch time every damn day.
There are other similar shops where if you walk in and they've got a sign that says "Sandwiches $8" don't ask what kind of sandwhiches they have... because it's the same thing, they have one type of grinder, unique to them. Do you want it or not? And you do want it because it will probably be the most delicious thing you ever have in your life. Also most of these delis have actual imported meats and cheeses and such from Italy so they're really not fuckin' around. Also another fun fact I learned living there... grinder and sub are apparently interchangeable on the east coast.
I know your AU is probably like a restaurant where they have actual chefs, but uh... I thought you might like to know about this XD
i was actually thinking sandwich shop (or pizza lmao) from the beginning! so honestly, this kinda vibe is more what im thinking rather than like… a fancy italian bistro.
im thinking the specialty is obviously gonna be some delicious beef thing. mouth watering at the idea of pastrami… so i might have to take the veggie out of veggie burgers because i dont know if allen, who grew up with this family, is gonna end up being vegan 😳 (he could just suffer through it and stick around because #familyisfamily)
regardless, allens mostly always behind the counter and most people get take away. so alfred REALLY cant figure out a way to really talk to him

like blood from a stone | chapter nineteen
(ao3 title: baby lemonade)
Chuck and I had taken our seats on the far end of the pier with our pastrami sandwiches and our French fries, and all the while, I couldn’t help but feel like we had missed something. I had ditched the Chuck I was engaged to back there at the chapel all for myself, but then again, he didn’t really leave me much choice in the end, either.   I had nowhere to go myself back there in the chapel, even with the rehearsal dinner in place and even with Lars and Kirk at the helm. I still shuddered at the memory of the conversation that the Chuck next to me and I had overheard before then, with Cliff’s confession. There was also the tidbit about Lars being there on the Boardwalk with us when he should have been across the street.
The whole thing felt so awkward that it made me a bit queasy come to think of it all. I almost had no desire to eat anything right then with the more that I ruminated over it.
But at the same time, I wanted to enjoy my time there on the Boardwalk with him. The pastrami was delicious, with the right amount of pepper on the side and with the right amount of jus on top as well. The fries were fresh out of the fryer and piping hot, perfect for the right amount of ketchup. Everything was perfect that it made sense for me to put my own nausea on the back burner for the time being.
I sipped on my cup of lemonade and I thought about a little walk on the beach, especially with the incoming sunset right behind us. To think of the sand between my bare toes and the feel of the ocean air through the roots of my hair. It would be better than spending an evening at a rehearsal dinner; I knew that much right away.
I glanced over at Chuck right next to me on the bench: he hadn’t said a word since we sat down and dug into what I assumed would be our dinner for the evening. I picked up an extra-long French fry and dipped it into the little thing of ketchup right down inside of the basket, and I managed to cut it down to about ten bites. Those long fries, I swear!
I wouldn’t trade that moment there on the bench for the world, but I was tickled by the thought of eating a rather large slice of cake the very next day, however. A large slice of wedding cake before my own. That moment there on the bench allowed me to forget my own wedding at the end of the week for a time as well. I wanted to enjoy my food as well as the cool caress of the ocean breeze around me and not think about my own fate come that weekend.
But I took a glimpse up to the aged wooden boards before me and I noticed that the shadows were growing longer with the setting sun behind us. Another day done and there was nothing more I could do about it in the meantime, either.
I finished my fries and I began to feel full right then. Another sip of the lemonade and I leaned back in the bench next to him. Chuck turned his attention to me: the setting sun shone over the side of his face, which in turn made his eyes appear like diamonds against his milky smooth skin. The corners of his lips curled up into a thoughtful little smile at me, and I returned the favor to him.
“That hit the spot,” I told him with one hand on my stomach.
“I had a feeling that it would,” he confessed to me with a little nod of his head; that smile turned into a lopsided smirk. He then bowed his head a bit at me so his long hair sprawled down over his shoulder to his chest.
“Penny for your thoughts?” I asked him as I took another sip of lemonade.
“Take a penny, leave a penny,” he replied with a little raise of his eyebrows.
“No, but really—you look like you want to tell me something. What’s going through that skull of yours?” My eyes caressed over the crown of his head: though his hair had long grown back, I could see the minute scar right at the crown. Where there were scars, there was a great deal of pain to boot. A great deal of pain that only he could overcome himself, but every once in a while, there had to be the caress of a pair of lips over the binding of the scar. A little something for the pain.
“I kind of want to get down to business with you,” he explained to me.
“When you say ‘get down to business’, what exactly are you implying?” I asked him.
“I mean, I—kind of want to—”
“Yes?” I raised my eyebrows at him. He nibbled on his bottom lip and sighed through his nose.
“I want to touch your belly and then lay next to you on the sand,” he confessed to me in a low voice, to which I swallowed down the rest of my lemonade.
“Really?” I never moved a muscle and he pursed his lips at that.
“Really, really. I want to touch you and I want to come close to you again, and I don’t want the wedding to be a construct, either. I want us to be a thing, Alex. I want you and me to be a reality.”
“But what about the royalty?” I asked him. “What about your band?”
“Don’t worry about my band,” he assured me. “And to hell with the royalty—you're already my prince.” He reached out and caressed the side of my face, which made my toes curl inside of my shoes. “You will always be my prince, even if the game becomes too hectic for the both of us.”
“I feel it already kind of has become too hectic for the both of us.”
He leaned over the space on the bench between the both of us and he pressed his lips onto my own. A feeling that made me think of blistering heat in the California sun, only to be made powerful by the vast array of ocean right behind us. I curled my toes so hard inside of my shoes that I had to lift my feet off the boards before me by about an inch. He released me and treated me to a shuddered breath, right into my own mouth, as if he breathed new life into me. New life into my own body, away from the realm of the royalty, away from the madness, away from the feeling that I was about to sign my own life away when I knew that a castle in the sky was no way to go.
“Nonsense,” he breathed into my lips. He gave me another kiss, another sweet little swipe of his cherry lips onto my own: my stomach was full, but not overly so. But at the same time, if I moved too hard, it would not feel very pleasant. To lose the sweet caress of Chuck’s lips onto my own would be something a full tummy could never usurp for me. “You taste like lemons and French fries.”
“Would you rather I tasted like gefiltefish?” I teased him, and he chuckled at me. He moved back and he tucked a lock of hair behind my ear for a better look into my face.
“God, you’re adorable,” he told me in a voice so low that I swore it came in on the ocean breeze. “Even with the little gash on your head and those gray hairs sprouted out in its wake. Especially with the gash on your head and the grays that came forth in its wake. You wouldn’t be you without it, Alex.”
“And you wouldn’t be you without the scar on your head, either, Chuck,” I confessed back to him. “I feel like I've known you forever.”
“In a way, you have,” he pointed out as he nudged another lock of hair behind the same ear; he ran his fingers along the sliver of gray at the crown of my head and then he pressed his lips onto my forehead. The softest feeling in the world. He held back and gazed right into my face with that little smile across his own and that soft glimmer in those eyes.
“I feel I've known you forever,” I continued. “I feel like I've known you forever and no matter what the cost, there will be a way in which you and I will have fun forever. We'll always find our way to each other and we’ll always be together no matter what.”
“No matter what,” he echoed me. He kissed me on the forehead again and I closed my eyes at the feeling. He put his arms around me and held me close to his little body: he was warm from all of the food that we had eaten. I rested my chin on his shoulder and I tilted my head against the side of his to better take in the soft smell at the roots of his hair. Even with the surgical scar on his head, I would smell that clean softness in there forever. I would always smell it.
“Don’t look now,” he blurted out before I could better relish anything else about him. I opened my eyes and I moved back away from him. I turned around in my seat to find Joey on the other side of those wooden boards with a paper cup in one hand. He walked on the Boardwalk and yet somehow, he managed to find a cup of coffee for himself.
A nervous pit emerged in my stomach: the warmth had gone away and a nagging pit usurped its place to my chagrin. I couldn’t exactly explain it, either, but something told me that Joey was up to something just by being there on the Boardwalk with us. Being there on the Boardwalk in a long velvety robe with a lacy collar around his neck that looked as though it was glued on there at some point. He looked like a Supreme Court Justice more than anything: if anything, the more that I thought about it, the more I felt he would make an excellent Supreme Court Justice. The man knew how to fight fair, but at the same time, there was something about him there as he walked on closer to us that left an uneasy feeling inside of me. An uneasy feeling that he was about to do something to us without our knowledge whatsoever.
I wanted to return to the warmth inside of me, the same warmth that Chuck had treated me to from before then, but alas, I could not.
“Hey!” Joey declared once he came within earshot of us.
“Hey!” I echoed him, and I couldn’t resist the tremble to my voice, either. “What’re you doing?”
“What am I doing?” He stood before us with one hand on the skirt to keep it off of the ground when he walked: both a Supreme Court Justice as well as an actual prince. “You guys are supposed to be at the rehearsal dinner across the street right now.”
“Me? I was barely invited.” Chuck shook his head at that as he drank down the rest of his cola on a whim.
“We just finished our food, too,” I added with a gentle pat of my belly.
“Oh?” Joey pressed the hand that held up his skirt to his hip and he looked on at the both of us with a smarmy look on his face. “What’d’ya eat?”
“Pastrami and some fries,” I said. “Delicious, too.”
Joey then lifted up his cup of coffee and sipped on it: all the while, he kept his eye on the both of us. When he finished his sip, he held the cup right before his waist.
“May I ask what you two young fellas plan on doing now that you’ve eaten and your bellies are now distended with delicious fair food?” he asked us in a single breath.
Chuck and I glanced at one another: I had no idea what to say to him. It was worse than the encounter with Lars and Cliff back down the Boardwalk, because at least there, I had a way out of it. I could think of my way out of it and then I made a run for it once I saw Chuck. But he and I were alone there on the Boardwalk as far as I could tell, and I knew that we would be alone for a great deal of time, too, given everyone else was across the street from us.
“Alex and I were just going to take a walk down on the beach,” Chuck quipped, and I closed my eyes. I wanted the two of us to be alone. I had a blood pact with Joey, for sure, but Chuck was my soulmate, though. He and I should have our moments alone together, as a couple before either of us hitched our wagons to another man, rather than a trio. If I was in a better state of mind, and if we found ourselves in far better circumstances, then perhaps I would allow the trio with Joey as the back wheel. But we had high-tailed it away from the chapel as well as Lars and Cliff, and all the while, Joey stood before us, and the mere sight of him left such an awful feeling inside of me whenever I even so much as ruminated over it.
“Aw, that’s cool,” Joey remarked with a sly smirk. I could see it in his eyes and the pit in my stomach only deepened even more the more that I looked on at him.
“Care to join us?” Chuck offered him.
“It’d be kind of a pain to walk around in this thing,” Joey confessed, and I sighed an internal sigh of relief.
“Why don’t you take it off and sling it over your shoulder?” Chuck suggested. “We’re going to be taking off our shoes when we get down there, anyway.”
“Good idea! Let me finish my coffee and then we’ll go—” Joey turned away from us with the cup of coffee up to his dark lips for a final round of sips. I turned back to Chuck, slightly exasperated.
“What the hell are you doing?” I demanded.
“What?” he quipped back at me. “He should join us if he so wishes. It's not like we’re going to the rehearsal dinner—and his being here with us tells me that he won’t be, either.”
“But—”
“No.”
“But—”
“No!”
“Can I talk please?” I beseeched.
“No. I don’t want to hear it, Alex.”
He returned his attention to Joey right as he returned to us empty-handed. I tilted my head back and closed my eyes. Not even a few minutes before then, we had our arms around each other. I wanted to make a run for it for real then, but I couldn’t leave him there with Joey. And even though I did not like the context for the time being, it would not be true to me to leave Joey there on the Boardwalk, either, especially when, as far as I knew, he had no means of returning to the house in Dublin. I had a way out with Lars and Cliff: I had found myself at a dead end here with Chuck and Joey.
“I just have one question for the two of you,” he started once he returned within earshot.
“What’s that?” Chuck asked him with more haste than I had ever heard from him before then.
“What if the three of us get caught, though?” Joey asked, and he scooped up the skirt from the wooden boards right below us. “Because I know you guys are supposed to be at the rehearsal dinner right now, and I just saw Lars when I walked in here. But he was walking the other way and I didn’t feel like running, either.”
“Lars was here?” I asked: I hit a dead end but that didn’t mean I couldn’t go along with it, however.
“Yeah, he was over by the entrance,” Joey continued. “He looked a little disgruntled, too. I mean, I would be, too, if my rehearsal dinner wasn’t all that was cracked up to be.”
Something incredibly off about that statement: something told me that there was more to the story that Joey refused to tell us. Something more to the story that Joey refused to tell me in particular: Chuck was the real third wheel here.
“So... for that reason, I genuinely hope that we don’t get caught by anyone across the street,” Joey continued.
“We won’t,” Chuck assured him.
“You sure?”
“Positive.” He stood to his feet and then he extended a hand to me. I sighed through my nose and I took his hand: I stood right next to him and I tugged on the bottom hem of my shirt before I picked up the empty basket and the empty cup with the little bits of ice left behind. Joey scooped up his skirt all the way and then he began down the Boardwalk in front of us. I tossed our garbage and then I returned to Chuck, who had tucked his hands into his jean pockets as if nothing major was happening.
“Bold of you to assume we won’t get caught, Chuck,” I pointed out to him in a low voice. “I almost got caught by Lars and Cliff a little while ago.”
“Right. But you didn’t, though.”
“True. There's still the possibility of it happening, though—especially with our bellies full of food and whatnot. All I feel like doing right now is laying down on the sand and taking a nap on the beach.”
“And right before the high tide comes in? I don’t think so, Alejandro.”
“Alejandro?” I chuckled at that.
“Alejandro, and Joey up here is Jose. And I would be Carlos.”
“Carlos Schuldiner,” I said with a slight chuckle. “There’s something oddly romantic about that, and especially given where we’re at right now.”
“Oddly romantic and a love of both cultures, too,” Chuck added with a little wag of his finger at me.
Joey awaited us at the gate before the pathway down to the sands of the beach: the sun had touched the horizon off in the distance, such that it almost looked as though the ocean was about to swallow it whole.
“I’ve got a really bad feeling about this, babe,” I whispered into his ear.
“How so?” he asked me.
“I can’t really explain it,” I admitted to him. “But I have such an awful feeling when I think about this and I see him there before us.” Chuck turned towards me and he set his free hand upon my shoulder.
“Alex,” he started.
“Yes?” I began in a small voice.
“Relax. It's just Joey. You've been with Joey before, haven’t you?”
“Yes,” I replied, still in that small voice.
“Then, do both me and him a solid and relax.” He gently patted me on the belly and gestured for me to follow both him and Joey down to the vast stretch of sands below. I sighed through my nose. A part of me still wanted to make a run for it, but I was still comfortably full: I never liked doing a lot of running, no matter how full of a stomach I had at the moment.
I had a sneaking suspicion that Joey was up to no good, though, especially as the two of us followed him along the edge of the Boardwalk together. All the while, I kept on picturing Cliff and Lars before us on one of those benches that lined the railing on our right side.

NEW YORK
New York was a dream and this time around I got to enjoy the city differently. My first time to NYC was in 2018 with my mum and since it was my first time there I wanted to do all the touristy things and visit iconic movie landmarks. This time around the itinerary was different for my husband and I.
We got to take it a day at a time, visiting landmarks I've saved on my Pinterest and TikTok. We stayed on 42nd St which was directly next to Grand Central in the bustle of the city but my favourite spot from this trip has to be Brooklyn/Williamsburg.
I shared some of my recs via the different neighbourhoods we visited throughout our trip on my Instagram Broadcast channel but listing them all down below for an easier read :)
Coffee chains I visited around the city:
What I ordered -
Blue Bottle - Sweet Coffee
Bluestone Lane - Iced Honey Oat Latte
Brooklyn/Williamsburg:
What I ordered -
L'Appertement 4F - possibly my favourite and most memorable bakery spot ever. There was something about its cozy ambience as your approach their store in Brooklyn. It is the girl bakery dream. We had an Everything croissant and it was so fluffy, flavourful and the perfect type of savoury croissant.
Poppy's Brooklyn - matcha with pistachio milk! my first time trying pistachio milk and enjoyed the mix of matcha and pistachio.
Vinnies Brooklyn - come and stay for their elote pizza and add extra hot sauce ;)
Levain Bakery - a chain so you’ll find this everywhere but we went to the one at Williamsburg! Got the triple chocolate chip cookie yum.
Bakeri Brooklyn - the coziest looking bakery tucked in the midst of Williamsburg - I could imagine a cozy rainy day here. I saw a lot of people getting their soup of the day but we just got their Christmas special triple chocolate peppermint cookie.
East Village:
What I ordered -
From Lucie - oat milk latte with lavender (I’m not going to lie this may have been my favourite coffee so far) and we took away their mini carrot cake with vanilla frosting
Tompkins Square Bagels - everything bagel with cream cheese, the perfect bagel order when you’re not looking for a lot of things!
Katz Deli - some say pastrami, I say where Harry meets Sally. A wide menu to choose from, Ashwyn had their pastrami sandwich (as they’re famous for) and I had the cucumbers and pickles on the side with their house mustard which I loved.
SoHo:
What I ordered -
Eileen's Cheesecake - I don’t like cheesecake so this was for Ashwyn! He loves a good cheesecake anywhere. He got a strawberry tart and he said it was good and crumbly.
Sporty & Rich Cafe - when in SoHo and in NY, I had to… got the Smoothie #1 on their menu which was a mix of berries. It was yum and a large size.
Aime Leon Dore Cafe - also when in NY’s SoHo… known for their Freddo Espresso but we just got a cookie to go! Was caffeinated 2x by the time we got here.
Pop Up Bagels - we took away an Everything bagel and a Salted Poppyseed bagel with a tub of scallion schmear, this was soooo good.
La Cabra Coffee - took away their oat latte and it was divine.
Kips Bay:
What I ordered -
Birch Coffee - An everything croissant (you can tell that we had quite a bit of an “everything” something and all of it has been so good) and an iced honey oat latte + a hot vanilla oat latte.
Bryant Park/5th Avenue:
What I ordered -
Sweet Green - I’ve seen so much about it online, I just had to try it IRL. Loved my kale salad combo - crispy kale, miso glazed salmon, spicy cashew dressing, breadcrumbs, chilli flakes yum.
Suki Japanese Kitchen - a Japanese curry house; we both got the curry rice and tried it at different spice levels. Ashwyn got a 3 and I got a 5 ;)
Baked by Melissa - a city cupcake chain. We tried their mini Christmas sugar cookie, PB&J and cookie dough.
Magnolia Bakery - home of the best banana pudding in town and you know it.
In a New York state of mind x
