Buddie 610 meta
Holy shit, this ep.
Tumblr media
Okay, what shall we start with? Maybe with what 911 itself starts, lots of foreshadowing. At the beach call, we have Eddie looking at Buck and replying to him (about the lightning), “I really hope it doesn’t strike twice, though.” Which, of course we know it will. But the foreshadowing continues, as Buck talks to Omar about unexpected things in life coming out of nowhere. That suggests we need to pay extra attention to other elements in this ep that might act as foreshadowing for later events along 6b. ~~
Tumblr media
That kind of connects to me with Buck being closely tied to Ely, the pregnant lady (he saves the day there twice, first by realizing the oil is dripping and if they use the saw, it might prove fatal, then by helping Bobby with the baby). First off, it made me chuckle when we learned that, despite being driven to the hospital by a man, he’s actually not her partner. 911 made sure we knew Ely has a wife, and that she has another kid with her. Is it a coincidence when Buck, who practically has a husband and a kid with him already, is the main firefighter taking care of her? Maybe, but it still amused me. What really made me take note is when he told her not to push, trying to stall her childbirth, and she replied that it doesn’t depend on her. That made me wonder if perhaps this is also in a way foreshadowing what we might end up seeing with the sperm donation storyline. I’m not sure, I can’t be, but I was not surprised to see that storyline brought up later in the ep. ~~
In general, this ep’s title, “In a Flash,” might seem to refer to the lightning storm the team experiences, but the real tempest is the havoc our families can wreak on us, tied to the unexpected nature change can sometimes take on. Chim’s dad suddenly shows up, raining on his parade. Albert suddenly thinks Chim should give their dad a chance to be Jee Yun’s grandpa, but decides against giving his brother a warning. The Buckley parents are suddenly making an effort, yet leaving everyone suspicious and unnerved. Albert suddenly leaks Buck’s sperm donation to everyone and unleashes hell between the in-laws. Denny’s changes, probably influenced by getting in touch with his dad, come as a surprise to Hen. And of course, at the climax of the ep, Bobby as the unofficial adoptive father of Buck might lose his son in a flash. The whole ep is filled with these parallels of abrupt familial disquiet, especially in relation to dads, on all 118 fronts. And as Buck deals with maybe the biggest of these questions, because he doesn’t even yet know what he wants for himself and how does the life he helped create (but only as a donor) fit into that, it’s no wonder his life ends up hanging literally in the balance. ~~
Tumblr media
One of the most painful things in this ep for me was seeing how much Buck’s parents are willing to accept him as a donor, because not for a second do they think he can be a father. That would be the natural conclusion from him looking at a sonogram on his phone, but his parents find it easier to believe their daughter is pregnant again than to think Buck would be a dad (ironic, because he already is one. Just not to the baby in the sonogram). It reminded me of how Eddie’s parents also didn’t believe in his ability to be a dad, and actively petitioned to have Chris taken from him to be raised by them in 315. It amazes me every time anew just how much Buddie are compatible, because their stories parallel so much that they can understand each other in ways most other people can’t. ~~
Tumblr media
And it gets to me that this whole episode also insists on reminding us how good Buck is with kids, first with the ones on the beach, calming them down and answering their questions to help them make sense of the whole ordeal. Then with Ely’s baby, a callback to how we saw him with the pipe baby in 101. It connects to him looking at the baby sonogram, all excited, once again acting so much like an expectant dad would (parallel to him and the firefighter onesie in 609), when we know he’s not actually going to be that baby’s father. It very much does feel like 911 is signaling to us Buck has some realizations coming his way in this context. ~~
Tumblr media
Speaking of the kids on the beach, Buck telling the boy he wants to fix everything, then adding that Buck gets it, had me screaming into my fists, because hey, remember who said that to Buck? That’s right, his Eddie, back in 504. A reminder of how much Eddie sees Buck, accepts him and allows him to be himself, enabling Buck in turn to reflect that back to that kid. Of course, in the context of the sperm donation, Buck’s tendency made him want to help “fix” things for Connor and Kameron, and we might learn in 6b that Buck comes to realize he sometimes lets this tendency take him to places that aren’t actually good for him, without fully considering the consequences, and then hopefully, he’ll get to find a way to balance this, to be himself, but not derailed from his life goals by this part of himself. ~~
Tumblr media
At the same time that the ep shows us how good Buck is with kids, it also serves to remind us of the one kid that we’ve seen him co-parent all along, the one who has always demonstrated what a good, loving dad Buck is, Christopher. Yes, when we see Buck working on his cooking with Bobby, it’s a part of the many parallels revolving around dads in this ep, so Buck and Bobby’s r/s is the immediate focus, but at the same time, we know who Buck is learning this FOR. Lazania kitchen scene from 601, anyone? Oh, but the best part? It’s when Buck tells Bobby, “Something’s missing.” He can’t quite put the finger on what, but he knows something in his domesticity isn’t fully there. I wonder what, Buck... And this is again in an ep full of foreshadowing! ~~
Tumblr media
It may seem like a minor thing, but remember how in my past meta, I was more or less losing it over the many times Buck and Eddie did rope rescues together as their own team within the 118 team, even having their assigned roles where Eddie connects Buck to the line and then becomes an anchor himself to keep Buck safe, to the point where I wrote a smut fic involving this very meaningful act? Yeah, so imagine me seeing that the most intense Buddie call we’ve had since the end of 413 starts with them doing this subtextually intimate thing, Eddie hooking Buck up to the rope, becoming his literal life line, and even teasingly calling him “cowboy” while at it. No, I was not breathing for a full minute at least. ~~
Tumblr media
But since I brought up the shooting in 413, can we talk about the insanity of the parallels? Take the meaningful staring once disaster strikes. Back in s4, it was mutual, right before Eddie collapsed. In 610, Buck is unconscious, so you wouldn’t think they could stare at each other at this moment, right? Plus, back in 413, it was just the two of them present at the scene out of the 118, the other members of the team weren’t there. The lightning strike seems a lot less intimate in comparison... But in this ep, the camera plays a role in recreating that same dynamic, singling out the connection between Buddie. Because when Buck is hit by lightning, we get shots of every 118 member looking up and being terrified of what just happened to their friend.
Tumblr media
The only exception in terms of this shot? Eddie. He’s the only one that isn’t being filmed from the side as he looks up, he’s filmed from above as he looks straight into the camera. Essentially, the shot recreates Buck’s POV for Eddie, and for him alone. It shows us what Buck would see and how he would stare down, back at Eddie, if he only could. The fact that the camera has to do this instead of Buck himself further emphasizes the horror of Buck being unconscious, but the choice to do this only with Eddie highlights their connection and makes it clear that Buddie’s bond IS different to what the other team members have with Buck, no matter how close the others are to him or how much they love him. What’s insane is that DESPITE having all of the 118 there, there is still a bubble within this whole situation that is Buddie and Buddie’s alone, even as Buck himself is unconscious. It’s no wonder Eddie jumps up that electrocuted ladder without even thinking about it, it’s no wonder no one even tries to stop him or warn him of the danger in that. That is a man on a mission to save the other half of him, and the show tells us that in more than one way.
That’s gonna continue through Eddie’s attempts (and eventual success) in getting Buck away from immediate danger, as well as when the team tries but then fails to revive Buck, because Eddie will be the one to push past Bobby to see Buck, and Eddie will be the one Bobby has to keep in line by assigning him driving duty, maybe the most important thing anyone can do for Buck once all the medical assistance they can give him in the field is of no further use. ~~
Tumblr media
One more thing regarding the comparison with the shooting arc in s4, as well as talking about camera shots, is that we get to see the difference between a platonic friend resuscitating his teammate and a man desperately trying to keep the love of his life alive. If you look at Chim doing compressions on Buck, he’s giving it his all, because he DOES love Buck, Chim’s doing his best for his friend and brother in law. But the shot is not an intimate one, we don’t get close ups, we don’t get to focus on the eyes and see the frantic look of a man who knows he CAN’T fail, we don’t see the intimate touch of a hand laying a gauze on an exposed chest and trying to keep this treasured body together, we do get “come on, Buck,” but we don’t get personal speech, begging the other man to hold on and just “stay with me.” While back in 414, in the ambulance, we had ALL of those as Buck, almost on the verge of losing his sanity, fought for Eddie’s life. ~~
Lastly, I’ve made in the past a gifset of times when we’ve seen Buck screaming Eddie’s name in horror at the face of danger (including in 413), and I love that we can finally add to that Eddie doing the same thing for Buck. But I think it’s particularly meaningful that it happened not as a matter of when Buck would be in danger, but rather it was a question of just how significant Buck had to become to Eddie for this former, highly decorated soldier to go from the stoic man he was in 218 to what we see in 610 (as seen in my latest weekly gifset). Because Eddie WAS incredibly worried back in the s2 finale. He was gritting his teeth, you can see the tension on his face, and the second it was safe, he sprang to Buck’s side. Eddie also held on to him while everyone else was lifting the truck (even though Chim, as a medic, would have been a more natural choice to hold on to Buck, while Eddie the firefighter helps lift engine 118). And Eddie wouldn’t even let go of Buck’s hand on the way to the truck. HE WAS DISTRAUGHT. But the man who kept his facade up in the hospital after Shannon, his wife and mother of his son, died just one ep earlier, did the same thing with Buck. What I find so telling is that he can no longer do that by 610. Buck has become such an integral part of his life, of his family, of who Eddie is as a person and how he deals with life, way more than even Shannon managed to be. And that’s why Eddie loses it, confirming what we’ve known for a while: Buddie are life partners. ~~
I now have direct links to my weekly meta posts, my Buddie gifs and more of my content in my pinned post. Loads of love to @whosoldherout for making unbelievable gifs for my very unique requests. You’re a star! Tag list will follow in the reblog. Thank you in advance for any reblog and like! I’m operating on 1.5 hours of sleep to get this posted ASAP, so I really appreciate any and all encouragement to keep doing this. xoxox

Unhinged buddie fic idea again -- Tia Pepa starts setting up Eddie on dates but with a bit of an AU twist.
Tia Pepa starts setting Eddie up on dates. Which Buck is fine with. Obviously. Why wouldn't he be? Eddie is his best friend, he wants him to be happy. He's also straight and maybe Buck liked having him all to himself but realistically, that couldn't last forever.
Whatever. He can get over it. Or he can at least pretend he got over it.
So Eddie is complaining at the firehouse about another set-up date and Buck tries to be positive and encouraging and says something about how Eddie could at least give them a chance - even if every word is said through gritted teeth.
And Eddie is appalled and says something along the lines of, "Maybe my tia should be setting you up, if you're so open to the idea." And everyone from the team claws at the idea, teasing Buck about being single and wanting to marry into the Diaz family through Eddie's cousin or something (which, a bit too close to the truth, ha).
Eddie finds the idea so hilarious that he tells Pepa about it. And regrets it not a minute later when she says, "Why not? I could set your Buck up with someone nice."
This actually makes Eddie grit his teeth, there's just something that makes him itch, even just thinking about Buck going out with any of the women Eddie went out with---Just no.
What he doesn't know is, Tia Pepa goes over his head on this --- just calls Buck (because of course she has his number, he's family and Eddie's and Chris's emergency contact). She sweet-talks Buck into it over the phone, telling him how Eddie told her about how he's single and how she knows just the right person for Buck and it'll be nice to keep Buck close in the family if it works out.
Obviously, Buck is skeptical --- there's just one Diaz he wants to be with and he's unavailable --- but then Pepa keeps on going how she knows just his type and how he's not going to regret it and just one date never harmed anyone and, well, Buck caves in because he's weak against most Diazes it seems.
He doesn't tell anyone about it. Not even Eddie. It's probably just going to be one date that he'll ruin like he always does and the girl will tell Pepa all about it and then Pepa won't even bother to set up another poor girl with him.
He gets a text with the place and time, a small hole-in-the-wall place that's just about Buck's thing, and an ominous message with Addy will wait for you there, look out for a red bandana.
And Buck is expecting some cute girl in dungarees and with a bandana holding up her hair but when he enters the place, it's almost dead and there's just some elderly couple, a group of teens, and a guy. A guy in jeans, a white t-shirt, sunglasses, and with a red bandana tied around his neck.
Turns out Addy is short for Adam, not Adelina or Adriana like Buck thought.
Adam is also gorgeous. Dark hair, chocolate eyes, tan skin, fit and strong. Addy has a six-year-old daughter, is no longer in contact with his ex-husband, works as a nurse in the ER, loves quiet indie places, and would love to travel the world every chance he has.
When after the date --- which goes on for so long the cafe's owner has to ask them to leave because they're closing --- Buck calls Pepa to tell her how it went and when can't really make his mouth produce words, she just tells him, "I told you I know your type, mijo."
Needless to say, Eddie finds out about that fast because Addy is his cousin and texts him for ideas for a second date with 'his friend Buck.'
His brain resets. Then restarts. Then resets again.
He did not know that about Buck. He would've known that about Buck.
He's calling his tia before he knows it and demanding answers.
Eddie, well, Eddie is fuming inside but Buck seems happy and Addy seems happy and they're both good guys so he shuts up whatever unreasonable, surprising anger he's boiling with and helps Addy prepare a date --- tells him about the water show in the aquarium he was planning on taking Buck and Chris to.
But the day of the show comes and Buck isn't answering his texts and he's just walking in circles around the kitchen table and before he realizes what he's doing, he's packing Chris into the car and, "Oh, look at that, what a coincident we're meeting you here."
He feels like an absolute madman when Addy tells him, when Buck and Chris are distracted by colorful fish, "If you didn't want me to date him, you could have just said so."
And a couple of days later both Pepa and Buck are at Eddie's for dinner and he feels like an absolute asshole when Pepa tells Buck Addy doesn't want another date. For about five minutes, that is, because after that Pepa looks Eddie straight in the eyes, he swears, and says brightly, "Don't worry, I know plenty of young single men that are just your type, Evanito."
The history repeats, obviously, and Eddie uses Chris to just 'run' into Buck on his date with another of his cousins. At some point, his cousins probably start to warn each other about it because they stop talking to Eddie about Buck's favorite activities and foods.
But they tell Buck the date places. And Buck tells at least one person on the team, always, and Eddie might be a madman but he's a madman on a mission so he always tricks the info out of someone -- Chim is usually the easiest and Hen won't admit but she likes to gossip about people's love lives. He even manages to trick Bobby into telling him where Buck is on his next date under the disguise of concerned 'Buck sure is going on a lot of dates lately,' etc. and Bobby actually falls for it and Eddie feels guilty about it until he hears Buck is going on a date with his godawful cousin Marco.
(Meanwhile, every time Buck 'runs' into Eddie on a date, he's cursing the universe and its stupid, obvious signs... Like, he knows he's in love with Eddie, the universe can shut up and stop screaming at him.)
Eddie is at Pepa's again and she comes back from where she was talking to someone on the terrace and silently sits down opposite Eddie with that look and says, "So, that was Marco."
"Yes, exactly. Marco. How could you set him up with Marco of all people?"
"Well, I'm running out of candidates because someone keeps on scaring them off."
Eddie doesn't look her in the eyes. He's truly become a madman since the whole thing started happening but like hell he'll admit it.
"You know, Eddie, if you don't want Buck to date any of your cousins, there's an easy solution that will solve this dilemma and will let us keep Buck in the family."
"Pepa---"
"Tell you what, I'll set one more date for him, tomorrow at seven at that ice cream sandwich truck Chris likes," she says, raising her eyebrows pointedly. "You decide if his date stands him up or not."
He never ever again wants to see Buck going out with any of his cousins.
Which doesn't mean he isn't a coward. He doesn't tell Buck. He tries to leave the house three times, changes his clothes about six times, and by the end of it, he's late.
Buck is easy to find between people, towering over most.
Buck smiles when he sees him but it doesn't quite reach his eyes. "Let me guess, he decided it wasn't worth it and backed out last minute," he sighs. "And Tia Pepa sent me a personal cheer squad to humor me up and pay for my ice cream."
"No, he's here," Eddie says because the it's me doesn't want to leave his mouth.
"Oh," Buck says, and his shoulders don't look so slumpy anymore but he still doesn't look, well, happy. "Where is he then?"
Eddie makes an elaborate wave with his arm and deadpans, "Ta-da."
There's a moment when those big baby blues blink at Eddie dumbly and Eddie swears Buck stops breathing for a few seconds before finally managing to push out, "Oh."

The Ship of the Day: Buddie
Tumblr media
Character names: Evan “Buck” Buckley x Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz
Ship name: Buddie
Original Content:  9-1-1
Info about ship:
Continuing with our firefighters theme from the previous post, 9-1-1 is a TV show following a fire house in Los Angeles as they go about their daily lives, saving people in daring rescues, dealing with funny accidents and being all around badasses. At the centre of the show is the 5 main firefighters, 118 Captain Robert “Bobby” Nash, paramedics Henrietta “Hen” Wilson and Howard “Chimney” Han, and finally, the topic of this post, special rescues duo Evan “Buck” Buckley and Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz.
Yes, firefighters apparently really like their nicknames.
Tumblr media
(Also, just look at Eddie's left hand placement in that gif, that's a strong grip on Buck's waist)
Buck and Eddie are the young, traditionally handsome members of the team, performing daring rescues with an ongoing repartee with one another. Best friends by their own descriptions, they were not always as close as they are in the later seasons. During Eddie’s introduction to the show, Buck was very against him joining, feeling as if he were invading and taking his role. It was only after pulling a grenade out of a man’s leg together that they learnt that they could get along and began their friendship. A true enemies to lovers story.
Buck helped Eddie find special needs childcare for Eddie’s young son, Christopher, and has stepped into the role of second parental figure for him. Buck is very good with Christopher and takes care of him often, even saving his life after they end up in the middle of a tsunami. Christopher absolutely adores Buck, going to him for help when Eddie is not available or is the reason for Christopher’s ire.
Tumblr media
Type of ship: Queer Bait
The show is not scared of queer representation, it contains many characters who are part of the LGBTQ+ community including Hen being a married lesbian with a son and Bobby’s wife, Athena’s ex-husband being gay and after the divorce getting into a gay relationship. However, this seems to be the edge of where they go, they refuse to take this final step and instead insist on edging the fans on the will they, won’t they of Buck and Eddie.
Firstly, there is a whole lot of longing staring at each other, like a lot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Buck’s early behaviour towards Eddie is described by his sister Maddie as a “boy-crush”.
Additionally, both of them are incapable of keeping relationships with female characters. Most of these female characters are brought in simply and solely to act as possible vessels of relationships and so are incredibly one dimensional. The only female partner who is more than that is Eddie’s wife, who firstly disappears from Eddie and Christopher’s lives and then, once she is back, very quickly dies. Eddie describes dating, or more specifically dating women, as “putting on a performance”.
Well, that’s a pretty queer-coded thought Edmundo.
Most people headcanon Eddie as a gay man who was pressured into a straight relationship due to family and so married the first girl he could, before he then spent most of his married life deployd halfway across the world for the Army. Buck, on the other hand, is pretty often headcanoned as a bi-man who isn’t so much closeted as just doesn’t really talk about it. It's something about him, but it's just that his past few partners have been girls and so people assume he is straight.
Going forward with more reasons Buddie is a queerbait, we return to Christopher Diaz. As mentioned earlier, Buck has taken up the role of a secondary parental figure for Christopher and this extends even into law. After Eddie is shot, something I’ll return to, and nearly dies, he ends up in the hospital for an extended period of time. Buck takes up the role of full time parent, firstly being the one to tell Chris that Eddie is hurt and then being the one to take care of him, getting him to school, bringing him to visit his dad. Altogether giving him full-time care. This is happening while Eddie has a girlfriend, a girlfriend who is a special needs teacher who knows how to take care of Christopher, and yet the job is still designated to Buck. As Eddie is healing he reveals to Buck that he changed his will and that, if he dies, Chris’ guardianship will pass to Buck. Not his girlfriend. Not his grandmother or aunt who he visits religiously, not even his parents. His best friend.
Baby trapping, anyone?
Tumblr media
So, getting hurt. They both do it a lot. And I mean a lot. But it is not so much the injuries themselves that are important but the reactions of their other halves. When Eddie has a well collapse on top of him, Buck breaks down and starts trying to dig desperately with his bare hands, when Buck has a fire engine land on his leg and crush it, Eddie holds his hand and keeps him company while everyone else is working on getting the rig off of him. When Eddie is shot, Buck is the one to save him, facing one of his worst fears and going back under a fire engine for the first time since he got his leg crushed under one, to pull Eddie to safety. When Buck is struck by lightning, it is Eddie who screams for him, who lowers him from where he is hanging off the ladder and also the one performing CPR. When the medical professionals say they will do their best, Eddie tells them to “do more”. They both save each other's lives, they both are often fuelled by emotions when the other is hurt. It is very romance-coded. This is not to say platonic relationships can’t have this care, but it is almost always romantic relationships that have this care displayed on TV.
And the final part, the most damning evidence of the studio intentionally baiting fans. The Couch Theory. The Couch theory was created by fans and means the following: Buck’s couches are metaphors for his relationships. Every time he gets a new partner, a new couch happens, and every time he breaks from a relationship, the couch is gotten rid of. When he is questioned about this by other characters, he always says that it's because the couch is never right.
Tumblr media
So where does he find the most comfortable couch, I hear you ask. Well, he often ends up on Eddie’s couch, even sometimes asleep there. So many of Buck and Eddie’s most important moments, their most queer-coded moments, occur on that couch. And in the most recent season, it seemed that fans were gonna get their way and the baiting was going to spawn into true queer. Throughout the season there were many inferences about the couches, Buck is unable to sleep on his couch so he goes to see Eddie and falls asleep on one side of the couch. Later in the season has Christopher falling asleep in the middle of the couch, and Eddie sits on the other side that wasn’t occupied by Buck earlier on. This creates an image of a family on that couch, two parents bookending their child. And what do the creators do with it? With the perfect set up they’ve built?
They give the two of them very hastily thrown in female love interests that have absolutely no background or connection to anything and then end the season before we can see any actual development.
The creatives intentionally took the focus of a queer theory and set it up for an apparent result only to swipe it straight out from under the fans. It was a spit in the face to fans and the fans were not happy with it. Queerbaiting is one thing but queerbaiting with fans own queer metaphors is a new low. And yet Fox did it.

and this is when the feeling sinks in ( i don't wanna miss you like this )
buddie, rated mature, navy seal! buck
He fights but his body is not cooperating at the moment and he's outnumbered. He doesn't know where the rest of his team is. He can't remember. That's a bad sign, that he's losing memories.
Get it together, Buckley. He thinks, trying to fight the panic. He needs to focus and hold on as long as he can.
He has to.
For Eddie. And for Christopher.
or;
Buck was supposed to come home in a couple months, pretty close to Eddie's birthday. He was finishing his tour with the Navy and then they'll get their happy ending. That's how it was supposed to go.
Then two officers showed up at Eddie's door with a flag and thanking his husband for serving their country.
And everything changed.
Fragment from chapter one:
"Hey." He says once he's alone. "I miss you, so much it hurts." He whispers just loud enough so Buck can hear him. He has the need to cry. It's been months and Eddie just wants Buck to finish his last tour with the Seals and come back home.
"I miss you, too, Eds. You have no idea. But we just have to hold on a little bit longer and then I'll be home before you know it."
Eddie is about to respond when someone is calling out to Buck, he can see the man wince on the screen and then send him an apologetic smile. "Listen, I'm hoarding the computer and the other guys need to call their families too. But I love you, and remember I'll be home in a couple of months. Just for your birthday!. Tell Chris I love him and that I absolutely adored his drawing!" Buck smiles at him and Eddie wishes he were in front of him so he could stroke against his birthmark and kiss those soft lips capable of making his knees weak.
"Yeah, yeah. Just be safe!" He says goodbye and Buck sends him a wink.
"Always, my love." He says before grabbing the Saint Christopher medal that Eddie gave him before deploying and kissing it. The screen goes black and Eddie resists the urge to cry, needing to be strong for Christopher who will be disappointed that he couldn't get more time with his Buck.
And it's just, he knows Buck had no choice but to see through his last deployment. But it's been so hard without him, having to take care of Chris on his own, having to comfort his son at night when he cries because his Bucky isn't there to make the silly voices, and having to tolerate the judgemental looks from his parents and the pitying looks from his sisters. It's been almost a year and Eddie can't wait to have his husband back in a couple of weeks. It feels like time can't pass fast enough.
He remembers when Buck left. Eddie remembers the pain in his gut after he saw Buck off at the airport, two months after the New Year, hugging him fiercely outside security and then driving home, slowly, through unrelenting traffic. Eddie had not felt sad then, but only numb: as if some part of him were missing.

Buddie #1
There is not a bone in my body that can accept that in any other universe they wouldn't be perfect together. Post 4x14 so SPOILERS for that. This got so much longer than I thought it would be. Sorry in advance, there's much more under the cut.
· Eddie tells him about the will. Chris goes to Buck if anything happens to Eddie. Which it very nearly did.
· It causes Buck to actually stop and think things through before rushing into danger.
· The rest of the team question it while Eddie's recovering but he just says there's someone relying on him now.
· They take it to mean Taylor - well Chimney and Albert do, Hen and Bobby are more clued in.
· Buck talks about Eddie and Chris like he did when they quarantined together - like they're living together again.
· They are.
· Buck moved in to help Eddie and his recovery, with Ana stepping in when he was on shifts - even if she tended to undo everything Buck had done.
· He tells himself it's because she's not used to the way he and Eddie do things - yes that one singular bowl and plate live in the lower cupboard, it's so Eddie can reach them easily. Chris always picks the movie on movie nights, Eddie and Buck alternate when he's gone to bed.
· Eddie is stubborn as always, but has managed to allow Buck to help him dress and shower - Ana is very much not allowed, despite her protests they're barely in a relationship.
· Eddie explains to Buck that yes, they've been together for six months but they've not really been togetherand he quietly admits that he regrets telling Chris so soon.
· Buck calms him and says that it was right to introduce Chris to the idea of Eddie dating, but yeah, maybe it wasn't smart to spring Ana on him so early - especially because she decided she had to be a bigger part of his life now he was aware.
· Chris manages to get to the station once while Buck is on shift.
· Buck comes back to Albert making him pancakes and Chris scribbling with the things they keep for the school trips.
· 'What are you doing here, bud? Does your dad know?'
· 'Kinda.'
· 'What does kinda mean here?'
· 'He knows I wanted to see you. I don't think he knows that I came here.'
· Albert quickly jumps in saying he's texted Eddie and he and Carla are on their way, it just happens that the rig got back before they got there.
· Buck sits down with Chris, leaning his head on his arms and looks at the picture. It's him, Eddie and Buck with Carla and her husband in the background.
· 'What's wrong, Chris?'
· 'Ana.'
· 'Ok, what did she do?'
· 'Tried to get me to bath before I ate and then said I had to do my homework before TV time.'
· 'Buddy, you always have to do your homework before TV time.'
· 'But she tried to help me.'
· 'Your dad and I try our best to help you. She's a teacher, she's better use than us.'
· 'No that's not it.'
· Chris has tears in his eyes and a death grip on his crayon.
· 'She told the poor boy his handwriting was ineligible and took his pencil, tried to get him to tell her the answers and that she would write them for him.' Carla sighs.
· She stands with her arms open and Chris runs into them. Eddie looms behind them, looking sad.
· Well, neutral really, but Buck knows his micro expressions well enough.
· After that Ana is banned from the house in the afternoons/evenings and Carla steps back in. The new problem is Ana turning up when Buck has days off - their schedule was she was here when Buck wasn't, for multiple reasons.
· Ana's great, there's just something about her that Buck doesn't like and she definitely doesn't like Buck. Maybe it's because they're just opposites.
· Eddie tries to gently tell her that he barely gets to see Buck anymore and he needs it for his mental health. Ana starts pestering about the fact that he should want to see his girlfriend more than his best friend.
· It's one of their biggest fights and turns into a screaming match one night (Chris is at Hen's with Denny but Buck is hiding away in the guest room) where Eddie shouts that she had decided that she was his girlfriend without asking Eddie if that was what he wanted and she was suffocating.
· She leaves pretty quickly after that and Buck is incredibly happy as their paths never cross again.
· There's an emptiness settling in his chest when he finds out that the two are still together and are treating the relationship as though they're just dating again. He hates that he really doesn't like the idea that it's working out now that they're on even footing.
· He decides to push it away and starts getting reckless again. Taylor's hanging around the station more like she wants more from Buck, but he'd given up. She liked being chased and now that he's tired of it, she wants him. He knows she'll get bored if he shows interest again.
· It's interest he doesn't have. Eddie had called him Evan and told him he deserved more. How was he supposed to go back to normal after that?
· Why doesn't Eddie see how life changing that was?
· Eddie does. But in typical Eddie fashion, he pushes it deep down and replaces it with his content being with Ana. She makes his parents happy, which makes him happy. She gets along with Pepa and Isabel and his sisters, but they act a lot more familial with Buck.
· It makes sense, he tells himself - they've had years with Buck.
· Nothing really changes for Buck until TK and Judd find themselves in LA. Buck hastily explains to TK that he wasn't asking him out back in Austin, he just wanted a friend and really he wasn't attracted to guys.
· TK just straight up laughs at Buck.
· 'Buckley, you checked me, Carlos, and the barista out in the span of like five minutes. You're a little attracted to guys.'
· 'Wait, you mean you and Diaz ain't datin'?'
· Judd's question throws Buck through a loop.
· 'What? No...we're just...we're friends. Best friends.'
· TK laughs again, patting Buck on the shoulder.
· Once they're on their last day, TK takes Buck out for a drink like he'd promised. Buck tries to ignore the fact he's brought him to a gay bar.
· He gets hit on at least three times in an hour, not to mention the building collection of beers for both him and TK and he decides he doesn't actually mind it.
· 'Ok, I want you to do something for me. Scan the crowd and pick a guy, any guy, and tell me what you find attractive about him.'
· Buck picks out a shorter man, tanned skin and dark hair.
· 'He's got a cute smile.'
· 'Oh boy, you have a type.'
· 'Huh?'
· 'He looks like Eddie.'
· And he does. Like a Walmart version of Eddie though. He didn't laugh like Eddie, didn't have the same laugh lines. Or frown lines. His eyes weren't as warm when he met Buck's nor did he smile as fondly. And...
· 'Fuck.'
· 'You just now realizing your feelings for him?'
· 'Yeah. How did I not know?'
· 'Honestly, it was probably such a subtle shift. From what you've told me you've basically been a couple for a year and a half, so you didn't realize anything had changed for you.'
· 'I've never denied it.'
· 'I mean you clearly must have.'
· 'No. I meant that there have been so many times people assumed Eddie and I were a couple and I never denied it, I went along with it all.'
· 'Shit man, you had it bad before you even realized.'
· Buck groans as TK throws an arm around him, leaning against his shoulder.
· Things change after that. Buck is hesitant with physical touch with Eddie - it's his main love language and he needs to make sure he's not overdoing it and making Eddie uncomfortable.
· Eddie notices because of course, he does. Buck has pulled away from him for seemingly no reason. The second Eddie can dress, shower, and reach the high cabinets himself Buck is talking about going home.
· He is home.
· Eddie doesn't say it, he just hums, not really agreeing. He's gotten used to Buck being around and so has Chris. They'd easily fallen back into their quarantine routine and now Buck would be leaving again.
· A quick thought of getting shot again fills Eddie's head. Though this time it's nothing to do with his PTSD and more so that he doesn't want Buck to leave. So he exaggerates just a little.
· 'You know, my PTSD is still acting up. Maybe, you could stay until it balances out a little?'
· 'You'd want me to?'
· 'Yeah, you're great at getting me out and calming me and Christopher down.'
· 'You don't think Ana should start taking up some night shifts?'
· 'I don't really want her to deal with that side of me yet.'
· 'Okay.'
· 'Okay?'
· 'Yeah, I'll stay.'
· Eddie keeps an eye on Buck just as much as he keeps an eye on Eddie. He quickly realizes that Buck is holding in his own troubles. He knows from experience that Buck does not think his problems are anywhere near as bad as everyone else's. He has a lot of unlearning to do.
· Subtly, Eddie starts talking to him about his mental state, his worries, trying to let Buck know it's ok to do the same.
· When he and Ana inevitably break up not even a month later, it's Buck that he tells first.
· Buck, who has his back.
· Buck, who loves Christopher as his own.
· Buck, who is insecure about everything he does except saving people.
· Buck, who thinks he is unworthy and undeserving of love.
· Buck, who shows his love through acts of kindness and physical affection.
· Buck, who Eddie is so unapologetically in love with and probably has been for years.
· The revelation doesn't shock him like he thought it would. More so, it was a natural progression of their relationship.
· Friends. Best friends. Co-parents. Co-habiting. Partners. Partners.
· Eddie sees a future with Buck, a future he'd only ever seen with Shannon but it's so much brighter.
· He comes home from his first shift back - Buck wasn't working and offered to look after Christopher so Eddie knew he was safe - to find Buck on the couch, staring into an empty beer bottle.
· 'Hey?' it's broken and Eddie drops his things to rush over to him.
· 'You good?'
· 'No. I'm not.'
· Buck looks up, tears in his eyes, cheeks red and puffy.
· 'What's going on, Evan?'
· That's all it takes. He breaks. He babbles about watching Eddie die over and over in his dreams. How sometimes the shower will splash his face just so and he's thrown back with Eddie's blood on his face. How he was trying to get through it with Dr. Copeland but it wasn't helping.
· Nothing was helping.
· 'It's ok. I'm here, I'm okay.'
· 'You weren't. You died, Eds. You died on me.'
· 'You saved me.'
· 'What if I hadn't? I don't know a life without you anymore. I can't lose another person I love.'
· 'You love me?'
· 'Of course I do. Why wouldn't I?'
· Buck registers his words, quickly backing away from Eddie and tries to make a break for the open door. Eddie isn't letting him run away anymore. His wrist snakes around Buck's.
· 'Evan. I told you there wasn't anyone else I'd want to look after Christ. I told you you weren't expendable. I said that because I love you and you needed to hear it. You had to learn you deserved love. Love that Chris shows you. Love that I can show you. I love you so much, Evan Buckley.'
· Buck crumples in Eddie's arms, Eddie rocks him gently until the sobs subside.
· It's not an immediate or obvious change. There are still things the two need to work through.
· It's different but the same. There's more contact now; hugs, tactile hands on waists, and backs at work. Kisses in the bunk, soft and slow.
· It's new and exciting. Especially when they finally get together, officially and exclusively.
· Chris loves telling everyone about his two dads.
· Eddie and Buck are happier, closer.
· Buck had always been a Diaz. He'd always had a family who loved him. The big change was he got to love them both endlessly in return.

Stay Here (Buck x Eddie)
Buddie Ficlet - 1k, Rated G.
for @trashbaget and @fearlessbuck because ily and talking to you gave me inspiration to write this 💖
Buck knew that the extra shifts Eddie had been picking up were starting to take a toll on the older man. Eddie had tried to hide it— how exhausted he was— and it might have fooled everyone else, but not Buck.
Buck knew that he should have made more of an effort to get them out of dinner at Bobby and Athena’s— steadfast ignoring the little voice in his head that asked him just why he felt like he could make excuses for the both of them— but the entire team was going and Buck didn’t want to bring attention to the fact that Eddie was almost dead on his feet.
Eddie would just deny it— did deny it— claiming he was fine, Buck seriously stop worrying so much, but Buck could see the dark circles under his best friend’s eyes, the way he seemed to have to drag his body as he walked. Buck had decided that if Eddie wasn’t going to go home and sleep, like he should, then Buck was going to do everything in his power to make him as comfortable as possible.
There was only one seat left on the couch? Eddie got it and Buck sat on the floor, awkwardly curling his long limbs with an innocent smile when Eddie looked at him with suspicion.
Eddie needed a drink? Buck was up and getting it for him before anyone else even had the chance to offer.
Christopher was sleepy after playing with Denny and Harry for so long? Buck carried him back to the truck, buckling him in and pressing a sweet kiss to his forehead.
Buck was thankful that they had chosen to drive over together— they were taking Christopher to the zoo tomorrow so it just made sense for Buck to stay the night, right?
Eddie made a move to get into the drivers seat and Buck just shook his head, guiding him gently to the other side of the car and helping him into the passenger seat. It was a testament to how tired Eddie was that he barely protested, just gave Buck an exasperated look but otherwise let him do what he wanted.
The drive back to Eddie’s house was quiet and as Buck pulled into the driveway and shut off the engine, he realized that both Diaz boys were sound asleep.
Buck shook his head fondly— see, Eddie, I told you you were tired! He slipped out of the car and jogged up to the front door, using his key to unlock it and leave it open. Making his way back to the car, he got Christopher out and into his arms without the boy waking once.
Buck got Christopher into the house and set him down on his bed, whispering that he would be right back before leaving to collect his second favourite Diaz.
Eddie gave a sleepy grumble when Buck opened his door and unbuckled his seatbelt.
“Come on, Eds,” Buck whispered. “Let’s get you to bed.”
“M’comfy,” Eddie murmured, not opening his eyes. He was clearly lying, his head was at an awkward angle and Buck knew Eddie hated sleeping in jeans, so no, he wasn’t comfortable.
Buck rolled his eyes. Well, looks like he was going to be carrying Eddie in too, much like he just did for his son.
Getting Eddie into the house was surprisingly easy— he guessed his workout routine was working. Eddie just snuggled against him, letting himself be carried, and Buck had to stop himself from swooning.
He allowed himself all of one moment to pretend like this was his life, that he actually got to have this. That he was carrying in his husband and son because they were so tired they fell asleep on the drive home. He allowed himself that one moment to hope, to pretend, before he shook himself out of it.
Buck made quick work of getting Christopher ready for bed, having helped put him to bed many times before and knowing the routine by heart. He gave him a soft kiss on the forehead as he brought the blankets up, tucking Christopher in the way he liked.
“G’night, Bucky,” Christopher mumbled, slurring most of it into his pillow.
“Goodnight, buddy,” Buck whispered back, feeling warmth bloom in his heart. He loved this little boy so much.
He turned off the light and closed the door almost all the way, leaving it open a crack so he could hear if Chris needed anything.
Buck rubbed his eyes as he walked back to Eddie’s bedroom, his own exhaustion crashing into him.
Eddie hadn’t moved much from where Buck had left him, just enough to kick off his shoes and wiggle out of his jeans before seemingly passing out into his pillow.
Buck chuckled. Eddie was adorable when he was this sleepy.
Buck plugged in Eddie’s phone, making sure to set the alarm so they wouldn’t oversleep in the morning and be late for the zoo. They would have one very grumpy boy on their hands if they did. Christopher had been talking about the zoo for weeks, ever since his class project on penguins. Buck wasn’t confident there would be penguins at the zoo they were going to tomorrow, but he was pretty sure he could distract Chris with the other animals.
Buck was lost in his thoughts, wondering if they had the ingredients for him to make pancakes in the morning, so he startled when Eddie suddenly reached out his hand and grasped his.
“Eds…?” Buck mumbled, confused.
“Stay,” Eddie whispered back, not opening his eyes and probably still half asleep but his voice was sincere. “Stay here.”
“I, uh,” Buck was at a loss for words and Eddie’s eyes fluttered open. Eddie gave him a look and suddenly Buck didn’t care— didn’t care that this could make things weird or awkward, didn’t care that Eddie might not have asked if he wasn’t so tired, because he was asking now and god, Buck wanted.
Buck kicked off his shoes and shucked his jeans, climbing into bed beside Eddie and feeling warm at the happy sound Eddie made. As soon as he was settled, Eddie curled into him, basically using him as a human pillow and Buck had never felt better.
He closed his eyes and fell asleep almost immediately, surrounded by warmth, love, and family.

Undisclosed Location
Buck missed two weekly video chats with his family. He was not going to miss a third. If he had to go batshit crazy to finish up this mission in order to make sure he could see his family this week, he would.
“I can hear your unrest all the way over here, Chaos.”
“I’d like to get this done so I could see my family instead of worrying them further,” Buck replied.
“You know how the job is, Kid,” his Commander responded.
“Yeah,” he turned to look back through his scope. “Movement.”
“Get ready to move in boys.”
Six Days Later
Buck stared up at the fire station. He was home, finally home. The aftermath of his mission resulted in two of his brothers being killed. He’d had to sit through three debriefings...he’d missed another video chat with Eddie and Chris, but he was home. He could see his family, hold Eddie and Christopher close. He could try to forget the chaos that ensued and took two of his family away from him.
He could see people walking around in the station. They were probably doing the different chores Eddie had mentioned before. He gathered a lot of attention as he walked through the bay doors. He’d come straight from his base, still decked out in his fatigues.
He pulled the hat off of his head as he looked around, trying to spot his husband. “Can I help you,” an older man, almost Buck’s height asked.
“I’m looking for Eddie, Eddie Diaz.”
“And who are you,” the man asked.
“I’m-”
“Evan,” the name was whispered, but Buck immediately found the source. He made eye contact with Eddie and that was all it took for Eddie to run towards him.
Buck braced himself, hefting Eddie up as soon as the other man’s body made contact with his. Both of their grips were tight on the other. Eddie’s hands explored his shoulders and neck, then finally up to his face. He took in the cuts and bruises with a small hiss, “Baby, what happened,” he whispered in the space between them.
“Last mission went to shit, Babe. But I’m here, I’m home,” he whispered, placing his head in the juncture between Eddie’s shoulder and head. He peppered kisses at the skin there, feeling the tension he’d not been aware of bleed away the longer Eddie was in his arms.
Eddie ran his hands through Buck’s hair, muttering under his breath as he took in his husband. “I was so worried. You never miss three video calls. You always find a way...even if you’re not supposed to.”
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” Buck whispered into his skin, “I never wanted to worry you.”
Eddie pulled Buck’s face from his neck, taking a long look at him. “I missed you,” he whispered, placing a gentle kiss on Buck’s lips before placing his forehead against Buck’s.
“I missed you so much,” Buck responded.
Buck doesn’t know how long they stay like that before someone clears their throat. Buck does nothing but put his head back in Eddie’s neck, breathing him in. It had been 9 months since Buck had been able to hold Eddie, he wasn’t keen on letting him go any time soon. “Someone you’d like to introduce to the rest of us?”
Buck could feel Eddie smile as his hands ran through Buck’s hair. “My husband. Evan Buckley.”
Someone choked, causing Buck to look up to find the person. “Shit,” an Asian man muttered, “you’re Evan? Maddie’s Evan?”
Buck felt his eyes narrow as he looked at the man. Before he could respond, Eddie tapped his cheek, “that’s Chimney...Maddie’s boyfriend.”
Buck raised an eyebrow at his Husband. “The boyfriend that got her pregnant?”
“That would be correct.”
Buck placed Eddie back on his feet, placing an arm around the man’s waist as he turned to a rapidly paling Chimney. He held out his hand to the man, glare not fading. “Evan Buckley, hurt my sister and I know ways to make you disappear without a trace.”
Eddie rolled his eyes lightly, hitting his Husband’s shoulder, “please, he’s been nothing but a gentleman to Maddie.”
“Then why the fuck was I only informed she had a boyfriend when she got pregnant,” Buck asked, eyes never leaving the man in front of him who hadn’t reached to shake his hand.
“Probably because she knew you’d have reservations after Doug,” Eddie sighed, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Babe, you’re freaking the team out.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Evan,” the man from before called, hand outstretched towards Buck. Buck slowly reached for the man’s hand. “I’m Bobby Nash, Eddie’s Captain.”
“I’ve heard good things,” Buck gave a small smile to the man as he released his hand.
“And he’s also heard good things about the rest of the team...he’s just trying to look all intimidating,” Eddie elbowed him in the side.
“Can’t a guy instill fear in his Husband’s crew without being called out on it? I just want to make sure they know not to mess with my Husband,” Buck sighed lightly.
“Excuse me,” a kind looking African American called. Buck raised an eyebrow at her, “you seem to have quite a few cuts and bruises...do you need to be checked out? Any bandages need to be reapplied?”
“This is Hen Wilson, the one I told you that got into Medical School. Do you need to be checked over, Babe,” Eddie asked.
Buck shook his head, “got checked out between the second and third debriefing. I’m fine. Better off than-” Buck trailed off, clenching his jaw. He shook his head, “just ready to head home and see Chris.”
A phone went off, jolting the group. “You going to answer that, Buck,” Eddie asked.
Buck cleared his throat, “No, no. I’m on leave. I’m not-no.”
Eddie looked at him calculating. The phone cut off, only for Eddie’s start ringing. Buck could only wince as Eddie reached for his phone, “Babe, it’s nothing. Probably my CO checking in. I’ll call him later.”
Eddie didn’t listen, placing the phone to his ear, “Eddie Diaz.” He made a contemplative noise as he listened. “Is that so? Mm, yes. Yes Sir. Affirmative. I’ll handle it. Yes, thank you sir. Mm, right. Thank you.” Eddie ended the call and looked at Buck unimpressed. “You skipped two out of three of your evaluations.”
Buck licked his lips, rolling his eyes, “they said it was going to take another two days to come home and I didn’t need a second medical exam. I’m fine. I just needed to come home to my boys.” Buck turned to Eddie, looking at him pleadingly.
“I remember you saying that you were fine after your Humvee almost took your leg. You and I have different definitions of fine. You can’t just skip out on your evaluations, they’re to make sure you’re alright even if you’re trying to convince yourself that you’re fine.”
Buck looked away from Eddie, sighing. “I told your CO that I’d handle it. Hen and Chim are going to check you out again. I’m going to get more information on your Mental Health Specialist and when they plan to come to see you. You’re lucky your CO is so understanding. If I’d pulled this stunt in the Army, I would have been dishonorably discharged.”
Buck bit his lip but nodded. “I’m sorry.”
“I know,” Eddie responded softly. “I’m sorry about your brothers.”
Buck sucked in a breath and nodded. “Me too.”
“Get checked out by Hen and Chim. I’ll call Carla to come and-”
“Eddie, take the rest of the shift off. I’ll call in a temp,” Bobby called.
Eddie didn’t try to argue, wanting nothing more than to go home with his Husband. “Alright, get checked out, I’ll have Carla make sure Chris is home so that we can surprise him.”
“Could we get ice cream later? By the pier? I think Chris would like that.”
Eddie chuckled. “Of course, Amor...I can think of another person who would enjoy it.”
“Always, Babe.”

we stick together (and see it through)
After a bad call, Buck shuts down, but luckily, Christopher is there to pick him back up.
Christopher Diaz Week, Day 4: Buck & Chris + “I’ve got you.”
Read on AO3
TW: OG Character Death (Implied Drowning; child) & Panic Attack (Buck)
Bobby had rules.
Like the ‘Q’ word, Bobby was planning to ban the term ‘simple call’ because more often than not, when those words were uttered, the call seemed to take a nasty turn.
They were called to a house where a teenager collapsed in her bedroom.
While her mother was distracted, knelt on the carpet as the team were handling her daughter, she suddenly realized that her young son was unaccounted for.
The boy was only five, and among the chaos, he’d ventured outside, falling into the outdoor swimming pool, hitting his head.
Buck, who'd headed downstairs to grab the backboard, was the first to find him; he sprinted across the grass and leaped into the pool, locking an arm around the child’s front as he screamed for help.
It was too late.
Trying to hide the tears filling her eyes, Hen called it.
With a gut-wrenching scream, the mother collapsed to her knees, comforted by a shaken Eddie, who knelt in front of her, uncertain of what he could but say, he didn’t flinch when her face collapsed against his shoulder. Tears filled his eyes, thoughts obviously locked onto Christopher as he pressed a hand to the woman’s back.
When Buck stood, he wavered on unstable legs, held up by Bobby’s firm grip on his shoulder.
It wasn’t anybody’s fault.
Although Bobby could count seven people who would blame themselves. Including himself.
Buck slipped away before Bobby could say anything to help Chimney who’d remained upstairs to care for the daughter.
***
Parking the truck, Bobby was the first to notice that they had visitors.
An excited Christopher was hanging beside the main entranceway with Carla.
Buck muttered to Eddie, his voice hoarse, “Go and get him.”
“See you out there,” Eddie pressed a kiss against Buck’s temple before spinning to unbuckle himself.
With morbid curiosity, Bobby watched as Eddie shook off what he’d witnessed, plastered on a grin, wiped his eyes, and hopped out of the engine.
“Christopher!” Eddie sang, holding out his arms, kneeling to pull his son into a needed hug; Bobby knew that he’d seen Christopher in that little boy, which is probably why Eddie didn’t let go, lifting Christopher clean off his feet.
Another station has transported the daughter on Bobby’s order, his team needed time to breathe.
He was going to play counselor soon enough; Hen, Chimney, and Eddie insisting that they should have noticed that another child lived in that house, or Buck believing that he should have run faster.
When the truth was simple, a scared mother was spread too thin, and it led to the most unfortunate of accidents.
That boy died; long before Buck even reached the backyard.
Bobby unbuckled himself, gazing up into the mirror.
Chimney raised his hand, patting Buck’s shoulder, his brow furrowed in concern as he reached for the door, jumping out.
Running her hands over her face, Hen made her way out of the engine as she scrunched her nose with a defined sniff.
When Buck’s eyes found Christopher, he titled his head to his shoulder, hiding a muffled cry behind his closed hand.
Bobby’s heart jumped into his throat, he went to speak but realized he wasn’t sure what he could say.
Buck scrambled to undo his belt before sliding to the opposite side of the engine, jumping out and taking long unconfident strides towards the locker room, actively avoiding Christopher.
Bobby leaned his hands against the dashboard, cursing himself inwardly.
Swimming pool. Tsunami.
The boy. Christopher.
“Oh—” Bobby couldn’t believe it taken him that long to put two and two together, “Crap.” He jumped out, closed the door, and sprinted towards the locker room, “Buck!”
Buck was sitting on the floor, back pressed up against the lockers, and arms wrapped firmly around his locked knees.
Bobby slowed his breathing, gripping the doorframe a little too hard, “Hey, kid.” He said, using the softest tone that he could muster.
Buck’s eyes widened startled, and the gaps between each breath grew shorter, the action itself more labored.
Buck hadn’t dried off since diving into the pool, his forever growing hair was wet-through, dripping onto his pale face. On the scene, Hen had wrapped a foil blanket around him, but he must have brushed it off while they were driving back.
“Okay.” Bobby got onto his knees, in front of Buck, giving him enough space to escape if he needed to, “I need you to look at me, kid.”
Buck locked eyes with him as he panted through a strangled breath.
“Copy my breathing, all right?”
Buck shook his head, frantic in motion, only exalting his panic, “Bobby—”
“Buck.” Bobby remained gentle but spoke strictly, “I’m gonna need you to listen to me.”
“Can’t—”
“I know you don’t usually want to,” Bobby mused, “But I’m gonna need to you, this time around.” He held up his hands, raising them as he took a deep breath in, “Just like me, okay?”
It doesn’t take long for Buck to fall into rhythm with Bobby, but as the panic attack slowed, the delayed reaction to the cold kicked in, Buck’s teeth chattered as he spread his fingers across his knees.
It didn’t help that the station had the air conditioning at full belt to beat the California heat.
Bobby pulled off his turnout coat, “Come here, kid,” He beckoned softly, with careful hands he pulled against Buck’s shoulders, coaxing him forward, making room for Bobby to wrap the turncoat around him, “That better?”
Buck nodded, darting his eyes around, “Yeah.”
Bobby combed his hand through Buck’s hair, allowing formalities to slip away as he gave his pseudo-son the hug he needed.
Christopher’s worried tone filled the room, “Buck?”
Bobby moved, perching on the edge of the bench as he spun his head.
Christopher hung in the door with a concerned Eddie lingering behind, their eyes locked onto Buck.
Christopher didn’t waver as he tossed his crutches aside and moved around the bench, throwing himself into Buck’s arms, tangling his legs across his lap as he muttered, “I’ve got you.”
Buck froze, not moving as he scanned Christopher with his teary blue eyes. Studying him like he would disappear if he dared blink.
Christopher noticed this, reaching up to grab Buck’s cheek with his small hand as he instructed, “Don’t be sad, Buck.”
Buck’s lower lip trembled as he cried out a lie, “I’m not sad.”
“Yeah, you are,” Christopher told him with a frown, “But that’s okay!” He ducked his head, laying it against Buck’s shoulder, curling himself around him.
Buck crumbled, his forehead falling against Christopher’s side as he released a sob, “Sorry.”
Christopher breathed, looping his arm behind Buck’s neck, “You’re gonna be okay, kid.”
Buck gazed up at him, “You promise?”
Christopher nodded, “I promise.”
Buck melted, folding his arms behind Christopher’s back, closing his eyes as he held him. Relishing in his safety, knowing that he was alive and that he was okay; at least, one kid he fought hard to save, was safe, well within his reach.
“Proud of you,” Christopher muttered, earning a slight sad chuckle from Buck.
Christopher was, hands down, one of the cleverest people that Bobby had ever met, he learned from his surroundings, and the world was better off with him doing so.
Bobby blinked away tears, his eyes finding Eddie, who was leaning against the doorframe, tears running down his cheeks as he crossed his arms. He wanted nothing more than to gather his son and husband into his arms, but this was once of those times where he couldn’t.
Nobody would ever understand what Buck and Christopher went through during the tsunami, that was an experience the pair went through together, which meant at times, such as these, they relied on one another for support.
Christopher probably didn’t even realize that the help that he was providing, but Buck relaxed, the tension rolling off his shoulders as he melted into his stepson’s embrace, the grief of the day dissipating, even if it didn’t last, it would have been worth it.
Remembering the loneliness behind Buck’s eyes when Bobby first met him, and now seeing the family that surrounded him, Bobby couldn’t help but smile.
Even following a bad call, Bobby was proud that Buck was no longer finding comfort in self-destructive activities but with a support network that would never let him fall.
Christopher Diaz-Buckley would always be around to catch Evan Diaz-Buckley.

He was tired. Tired of the glares and harsh words from the people he called family. Tired of going home to an empty apartment because Luca was overseas on some mission that was classified. Tired of being the man behind when all he wanted was to save people. To do the one thing he was good at. He left a voicemail for Luca and one to both Luca’s twin sister and brother in Texas. His grip is tight on the railing but not from a fear of failing. No, he had resigned himself that he was going to die but only when he’s ready. He hopes Chris will forgive him, but he had written him a letter and had left it on his counter with Carla’s name on it. He knew she would give it to him. Luca would be pissed and heartbroken but he had a good support system in their old team, his family, and his crew in Austin. He had left letters for the crew of the 118 as well. Left them on the counter as well. He had written a letter for every person in his life that he loved. It was up to them if they read it or not.
He lets out a breath when he hears a car stop. “Sir, please step away back over the railing.” He felt like he could cry. He knew that voice. “I’m good right where I am, ‘Thena.” He calls opening his eyes to look down. It was about a 40ft drop into freezing water so if the impact didn’t kill him then the hypothermia and subsequent drowning would. “Buck?” He hears her come closer. “What are you doing here, baby?” She asks and he shrugs. “I’m tired ‘Thena.” He tells her as a firetruck pulls up. “Anyone I can call?” She asks stepping closer and he shakes his head. “Stay where you are ‘Thena.” He warns and she stops moving. “Just you Bobby. Keep the others back.” He hears her speak into her radio. The 118 must have responded. Fuck. It was bad enough that he was going to jump in front of Athena but now his crew. The ones who have thrown insults and petty jabs his way. The ones who had a hand in causing this. His grip loosens and Athena lets out a strangled noise. “It’s Okay, ‘Thena.” He tries to reassure her.
“Why’d you have the rest of the crew stay back, Athena?” He hears Bobby, no captain Nash say his tone weary. He knows exactly when Captain Nash spots him. His breath audibly hitching. “Buck?” The use of his nickname and the concern in his voice has him letting out a harsh laugh. “It’s Buck now, is it?” He says finally turning around to face him. “Buck, you don’t have to do this.” He says stepping closer, but Athena holds her arm out. “Why should I listen to you? You’ve done nothing but belittle me since I got back. This isn’t your house, so I don’t have to follow your rules.” His voice is calm, and he looks over to where Hen, Chim, and Eddie have gotten out of the truck. He can see the horror in Hen’s eyes, and he feels kind of bad. She was the one who he confided in the most about being away from Luca. They had eventually bonded over their similar sexualities and marriages to people of the same sex.
“Eddie get me a harness.” Captain Nash says and he sees Eddie falter for a second before following the order. Chim stands beside Hen watching with wide eyes. No doubt trying to figure out how to explain what happened to Maddie. Hen is gripping her med bag tightly. “Think about the people that love you, Buck. Think about your family.” Captain Nash says and he turns his gaze once more to his captain. “My family consists of Luca Rizzoli and his family.” He says and Captain Nash shakes his head. “You’ve got us Buck.” Eddie says as he hands over the harness to his captain. He lets out another humorless laugh. “I’ve not had you since the bombing. I thought you were my best friend. But friends don’t call each other exhausting or shove them around. Family doesn’t belittle anything that’s ever happened to a member of said family.” Eddie looks guilty at his words. “Captain Nash, I used to think of you as a father figure. Now, I see that your no better than my own damn father who didn’t give a single shit about me. In a way this is your fault. You chose to lie to me about what happened. So the only way I saw to get back to my family was to fight for it. I turned down 7 million dollars to get back to my family. It was never even about the money. I just wanted you back.” He pauses to take a breath before continuing. “I knew it wasn’t going to be easy and I accepted that you all would be mad at me. I just didn’t expect for it to last a few months and involve being assaulted. You chose to leave me as the man behind. At first, I was fine with it. I knew you didn’t trust me. I figured I’d need to earn your trust back, but you never gave me the chance. Then after awhile it just started to hurt. You had taken away my ability to help people in a way I loved. I wasn’t being shot at or have the threat of getting blown up and I wasn’t in some active warzone halfway across the world.” Captain Nash had put on the harness as he was talking but never took his eyes of him.
“Please, let us make this right.” Captain Nash pleads with him, but he shakes his head resolved to do what he had come here for. “Think of Christopher. That kid loves you like you’re his father too. Think of what it will do to him if you die.” Eddie says. “That’s a low blow, Eddie. I did think of him. All the time. I wondered if he had nightmares from the tsunami. Wondered if there was any way I could help him, but you kept me away.” He seethes but his voice is still level. “I’m sick and tired of thinking of and putting other’s before myself. Call me selfish but I just don’t give a shit anymore. I’m tired of being other people’s punching back both physically and emotionally. I’m done.” He sees Hen and Chim start moving toward him. “I’m sorry but I just am.” With those final words he pushes himself away from the railing letting go.
The air is cool against his skin as he falls closing his eyes a thinking of his husband. He can hear the screams of the people he once called family, but the sound disappears as soon as he hits the water and his world fades to black.
The 118 stand shocked as their youngest member just jumped of the bridge. Henrietta Wilson falls to her knees as a broken wail leaves her. Her partner Howard Han stands in total shock trying to make himself believe that the man he considered as a brother has just ended his life. Edmundo Diaz has crumpled to his knees as well sobs leaving him as the reality of what he had done had cost him his best friend and the man his son considers as a second father. Athena Grant stands with her hand over her mouth and tears streaming down her face. It was like May’s overdose all over again but this time she wouldn’t be saving her child. Robert Nash is half leaning over the railing with his arm outstretched for the man that had become like a son to him. Guilt consumed each member of the 118 from their actions in the last few months. Athena’s guilt coming from her failure to save her boy. Each of them wondering how they were going to tell their family and how they were going to tell them it was their fault. How it was their actions that drove him to take his own life. “Get water and rescue down here to search the waters. I want his body recovered.” Captain Nash’s voice is void of any emotion as he gives the command. It prompts the others into action but a cloud now hung over them and its their own fault.

Caught (a 9-1-1 fic post-s3 finale)
Photobooths are prime for catching special moments and making them last forever, even if they are less both and more open spaces with a backdrop. When Athena, Bobby, and Michael stumble upon one such moment between Buck and Eddie, what will they do?
And how will it affect Maddie and Chimney?
T, 3.7k, Athena/Bobby, Buck/Eddie, Maddie/Chimney
Athena finds operating a laptop with only one hand maddening. Typing up an e-mail takes double the time, she needs breaks when shopping online, and scrolling through social media becomes dangerous when she accidentally likes pictures she didn’t mean to. If she had her choice, Athena would be on her phone. But the hired photographer from May’s party e-mailed the pictures from the photo booth, both Bobby and Michael nearby when her phone pinged. Instead of having her husband and ex-husband crowded at her shoulders, Athena pokes her password into the given space while the men gather snacks. When she finally has the first picture loaded, Bobby places the bowl of popcorn by her sling and Michael hands off a soda.
“I think we’ve never looked better Bobby,” Michael laughs, pointing at the screen.
Athena snickers into her drink, studying the picture. Bobby’s jaw dropped in a faux yell; guitar hugged tightly against his chest. Fingers hooked as if he were playing something. Michael’s expression mirrored his except the tinsel wig on his head making it immensely funnier. “Don’t you be trying to steal my man from me, Michael,” she warns, attempting severity, “You already got a doctor eating out of your hand.”
“Okay you two,” Bobby settles his arm across Athena’s chair, chuckling, “we’ll never get through these if you two are bickering. Athena, click onto the next picture?”
They kill the next half-hour like that, pausing every so often to laugh at a few pictures. Like Maddie with May, the two women back-to-back and imitating an old spy poster. Or Chimney and Hen battling with the inflatable guitars like they were axes. Although not every picture was funny. Michael and Athena thought May and her boyfriend gravitated closer than necessary for a simple photo. And Athena needed a moment, collecting herself from the sheer adorableness of Buck and Christopher’s faces pressed cheek-to-cheek.
The next few pictures included Buck as well, except Christopher’s father joined in the fun in his son’s place. Eddie sipping a drink while Buck played the guitar. Him raising a leg mid-kick while Buck locked eyes with the camera. Smoking on a corncob pipe as Buck runs wild behind him. Flexing, playing the guitar, and jumping. One picture had half of his face cut off.
Buck must have landed closer, because Athena clicked on and they occupied the same breadth of space. Eddie, non-plussed, while the younger man messed with him. Grinning, swinging beads in his face. Then wincing when it struck the soft spot between his brows. Brushing gently over his nose in a cursory inspection, too close. Followed by –
“Oh, my,” Athena gasped, hand over her mouth. She felt Bobby tense at her side and Michel mutter a curse under breath.
The photographer, with perfect timing, captured the briefest of pecks. Buck’s lips on Eddie’s, both puckered. Expectant. None of them can decipher who initiated the embrace. Only that it happened and there was no mistaking the intention
“Well I’ll be damned,” Michael says, “this is…”
Athena glances at her husband, “Did you know about this?”
Bobby shakes out of his stupor, turning to her. “No, I… I had no idea,” he says, “I mean, they’re close but I always thought it was more like… brothers?”
Michael snorts, drawing Athena’s attention. “Do you have anything to add?”
His mouth thins, and he inches back. “No, I’m as shocked as you both are… A little intrigued… and embarrassed I didn’t notice those boys swung on my team before… But shock is at the forefront.”
She sighs, sagging in her seat. Her finger scrolls onto the next arrow except she cannot continue. Athena finds herself staring at the picture again. What should we do?”
Bobby hums and squeezes her shoulder. “We can pretend this didn’t happen and let them come to us in their own time?” He nods at the screen, “For the first month at least. If they don’t say something past then, I will have to bring it up anyway seeing as fraternization between coworkers requires tons of paperwork.”
“Okay, then I guess we keep this to ourselves until they own up on their own,” she says, moving on, “or you need evidence if they try and deny it altogether.”
“Always thinking like a cop,” Michael laughs, nudging her, “you’ll be back on the streets soon enough.”
“We’ll see.” She finally clicks onto the next picture, another Eddie and Buck. More bashful and with ruddy cheeks. If there were any confusion about the prior scene, this added the final layer of context. “They do make an adorable couple.”
           “And a hot couple…”
Athena elbows Michael with her good arm, scowling. “Hush up. Think about your doctor.”
The mood returns, not at the same level it was before the discovery but there the same. They finish viewing the album and then spend more time dividing it. Creating folders for their friends and family so they can have their pictures. Athena finds the kissing scene again and immediately puts it, and the accompanying aftermath shot, in its own folder. She forgets it when they start compressing the files for ease of sending.
Unfortunately, when attaching Buck’s pictures to the e-mail, his zip file contains two folders.
                                      -----------------------------------------
Buck find Eddie in the kitchen, pouring milk into two bowls of cereal. His heart skips a beat at the scene of pure domesticity. The way sunlight streams through the thin curtains and makes Eddie glow in its beams. Makes him look more irresistible than he already is. He tugs his shirt down over his chest and walks over, wrapping his arms around Eddie’s chest. “Breakfast? Really?”
“What – not a fan of Fruit Loops?”
“I love Fruit Loops,” Buck chuckles, kissing at the bruise on Eddie’s neck he made earlier. “But I don’t know if three o’clock is the perfect time for them.” Still, he takes the bowl from off the counter and opens a nearby drawer.
Eddie grabs spoons for them both. “Breakfast isn’t a meal… it’s a state of mind. It’s the first thing you eat when you get out of bed. And since we haven’t left the bed since now…”
“We could’ve left earlier,” Buck reminds him, “If you weren’t so damn horny.”
“I wasn’t the one practically crying for dick in my ass –“
“Hey, hey!” Buck cuts him off, cheeks burning hotter the longer Eddie laughs. “I wasn’t crying, I was… heavily suggesting.”
           “Sure…”
He scowls, sticking his spoon in Eddie’s bowl and stealing a bite. “If you didn’t want a second round, all you had to do was say so. But don’t go complaining because I was making sure you were having a great time while Christopher’s at camp.”
“Oh, no,” Eddie shakes his head, grimacing, “please don’t quote my son’s card while we’re talking about sex.”
“You started it,” Buck smirks, pointing with his spoon. “Your fault if you can’t handle the heat.”
Eddie shoves at him, jostling the milk and spilling some onto his shirt. A soggy Fruit Loop dove from his bowl and landed on his foot, near his big toe. Buck retaliates with a push of his own, although Eddie catches his wrist and drags him into a kiss that makes him forget about the milk stain, dropped Fruit Loop, and Eddie’s teasing.
They break for air, foreheads pressed against each other. “We should really be eating.”
           “Yeah.”
It’s another five minutes standing there. Balancing bowls of cereal and trading kisses. When they finish, Eddie guides Buck into the living room. They cuddle on the sofa, Buck crossing his legs under him and flicking the television on. Flipping through channels until he finds a cartoon he likes. Halfway through the SpongeBob episode, he feels a heavy stare. Buck turns, cheeks stuffed with cereal, to find Eddie watching with a small grin. “What?”
“Maybe I should have sent you to camp alongside Chris,” Eddie says, “that way you could have had fun with all the other kids.”
He swallows, glaring. “Shut up…” Eddie leans forward and brushes his lips across Buck’s cheeks, halting any further protest. Unwilling to let Eddie win, however, Buck redirects his attention elsewhere. Namely his blinking cell phone, resting on the coffee table since last night. Buck must have forgotten it sometime between Eddie kissing him and Eddie carrying him out with Buck’s legs around Eddie’s waist.
Buck opens it, wincing at the number of messages.
Eddie peers over his shoulder, spoon in his mouth. “Popular?”
“Something like that…” He scrolls through the notifications. At the tagged pictures on Instagram and the missed calls, choosing his texts first. Sees five from Chimney asking about where his is and if he can come over. Then twenty from Maddie progressively growing angrier the longer Buck didn’t respond. Buck types back on the last message. Answers her ‘Buck I am not kidding you better answer me asap we need to talk’ sent at one-twenty-three with a ‘Sorry b there soon’ at three-thirteen. “I gotta go to Maddie’s…”
           “What for?”
Buck scans through the texts again, shrugging. “Doesn’t say. But it must be important if both her and Chim were on my case.”
Eddie knocks shoulders with Buck. “Want me to tag along?”
“I’d appreciate it,” Buck tells him, “but if we’re supposed to keep this low-profile, I doubt showing up together will help.”
“But we always show up together,” he argues.
           “Not after having fantastic sex.”
“You’re right,” Eddie concedes, thoughtful expression transforming into one more devious. His fingers tickle Buck’s thigh before he squeezes Buck’s cock. “I’d rather show up after mind-blowing sex.”
“Eddie, you’re killing me,” Buck whines, “I’m too tired.” Except he lays his bowl on the table alongside Eddie’s and happily relaxes onto the couch. Lying underneath the other man while he licks at his collar bone. Buck giggles while his friend’s stubble rubs against his skin. Absentmindedly Buck looks at his phone, scrolling through more apps. He opens his e-mail and sees the message from Athena labelled: ‘May’s Graduation Party Photos’. “Hey Eddie, the photos from May’s party are here.”
“What?” Eddie asks, rising momentarily for air.
           “Pictures!”
“Another time, Bucky…” he presses a sloppy kiss at his jaw, smirking. Toying with Buck’s shirt. “Be with me now.”
“Let me take a quick look.” Buck ignores Eddie’s pleading, opening it. Downloads the file and clicks the icon, switching apps. He opens the first folder, a photo of Buck and Maddie greeting him. “Oh, these came out nicely…”
Eddie continues dropping kisses on different points of his body while Buck scrolls through each picture. “Really, Buck,” he gasps after sucking a mark onto Buck’s hip. A feat that usually leaves him panting, sweaty, and writhing in Eddie’s embrace. “Can’t this wait? Feeling unappreciated…”
Buck threads his hand through Eddie’s hair, patting it. “Almost done,” he tells Eddie, “There’s another file here… looks like it’s only two –“ He cuts off, eyes widening.
Startled, Eddie raises a brow at him. “Buck? You okay?” Nothing. Eddie crawls up and forces Buck’s gaze away from the phone and towards him, tilting at his jaw. “Speak to me. What is it?”
He cannot speak. So he shows Eddie his phone, watching the blown pupils retract as the mood shifts.
It’s a photo from the party, one they hadn’t realized was captured. Their first kiss. When Buck was so overwhelmed with happiness and warmth and, staring at Eddie, crossed the divide without thought. A quick peck that left them stuttering and blushing and unsure where they stood. Buck ran away, not waiting for Eddie. Moving until the other man dragged him into an empty room to explain himself.
Buck had nothing. No reason why he kissed Eddie except that it felt right. Which he proved by pressing him against the wall and kissing him again. Eddie answered in kind, flipping him around and hauling his leg up. Thumb brushing his kneecap.
They broke, muted sounds of the party filtered through the door. Eddie cleared his throat, “We still need to talk about this.”
           “Definitely…”
Both men said their goodbyes, five minutes after the other. Promises that when Christopher left for camp, they would restart their conversation. Eddie drove straight over, card still in hand when he knocked on Buck’s door.
Buck hung it on the fridge before they tripped up the stairs in hurried excitement, shedding clothes and tumbling on the bed.
           Talking came after the sex.
“What do you think it means?” Buck asks, “Why would Athena send this?”
Eddie shrugs, mouth flapping worriedly. “I don’t know,” he finally says, “Maybe she… maybe she sent without looking?”
Buck rolls his eyes. “Karen and Hen had their photos taken but I don’t have any of theirs. She definitely saw this.” His mind works double time, connecting loose threads into a makeshift sweater. “Wait,” he says, pushing Eddie off him and onto his knees. “Wait, hold on… do you think this is what those texts were about?”
           “Texts? What texts?”
“Chim and Maddie,” he reminds Eddie, “the urgent texts that – that didn’t mention what made them so damn urgent. Do you think… Athena sent this photo to them, too? To Hen? Everybody?”
Eddie sighs and runs his hands up and down Buck’s shoulders, added warmth like a candle fighting an iceberg. “Athena wouldn’t do that,” he says, “I’m sure this was nothing. Maybe even a… a simple way of letting us know she knows and she supports us?”
           “Still…”
As if seeing the smoke billowing out his ears, Eddie stands and offers a hand. “Come on.” Buck squints up at him, curious. “You think Maddie and Chimney know about us. You won’t know by sitting here spinning out. When we get there, we can see what they have to say.”
Buck fights his smile, but a tiny smirk still appears. “We?” he asks.
“Yes, we,” Eddie tells him, “So let’s move. I think I have a shirt that’ll fit, but it might be a little short?”
“What about my clothes from yesterday?”
“Please,” Eddie matches his smirk, “we’re not sure if they know about us. Why make it obvious by doing that.” Most of the tension from moments ago disappears with their laughter, Eddie ridding him of the rest by hauling Buck into a tender kiss. “Hurry,” he whispers, “because if we stay here any longer, I won’t want to leave the house until tomorrow.”
“Tempting…” Buck pushes off, smiling. “Very tempting, but I already promised Maddie. She’s mad enough at me as it is.” Eddie tries catching his wrist one more time but Buck, aware of this trick, dodges at the last second and bounces off. The other man chases with great speed.
The playfulness helps distract Buck from the impending appointment with his sister and their friend. And leaves him grateful that he and Eddie crossed over in their relationship, onto the next level. Into what it was always meant to be, what it kept building towards over the years. Abby’s return the final push giving Buck the clarity he needed in understanding his feelings.
When the hurt finally stopped, the loneliness he expected to follow didn’t. Because Buck had his sister. The one-eighteen. Christopher and Eddie.
Especially Eddie. Especially when his lips tickle his neck, and delays them further.
                                     -----------------------------------------
Maddie paces the floor, chewing on a bite of pickle. “What’s taking him so long?” she asks Chimney, her boyfriend watching from a nearby couch. “I swear, if he isn’t in this room in the next five minutes…”
Chimney stands, walking towards her. “I’m sure he has his reasons,” he tells her, “he didn’t answer his phone until – what? Three? Maybe he was busy.”
“Too busy to answer a text?” She pokes his chest, huffing. “Too busy to get his ass over here and learn that he’s about to be an uncle?”
“Well, you didn’t tell him he was going to be an uncle in the text so he probably didn’t think it was that urgent.”
She glares, readying another onslaught. Luckily for Chimney they hear the buzzer for his apartment ring. Maddie shoves the rest of the pickle in her mouth, nodding at the door. “Let them in and bring them into the dining room.”
           “Anything else, my queen?”
Maddie ignores him, setting at the table with her hands folded. Listens while Chimney speaks into the intercom and lets Buck up. In the minutes between that and Buck arriving, she thinks. About what it felt like seeing both plus signs appear on the pregnancy tests and the cocktail of emotions erupting within like a volcano. Happiness and excitement, but also fear. Worry over whether she was ready, or if she would be a good parent. Memories of her own childhood flooded and distracted Maddie until she broke free from their chains and realized Chimney spoke to her in the living room.
He tried, but in the days that followed Maddie’s party her nerves only shredded further. She needed her brother. And when Maddie mustered the strength and reached out, he kept her waiting.
Anger won out when she laid eyes on him, incised further when she notices Eddie. “Is that why you weren’t answering me? Too busy ‘hanging out’?” The exaggerated quotes make Buck flinch in a way he hadn’t in years. Not since he was a little kid. And she finds herself back in Hershey once more. And Maddie’s doubt in her skill doubles.
“Sorry Maddie,” he says, stepping into the dining room, “time just got away from us and… we came as fast as we could?”
She glances between them, both men with reticent expressions. As quickly as it arrived, the fire inside fizzled into embers. “I’m sorry,” she says, kneading at her temple, “I’ve just been… a little stressed.”
           “Stressed, why?”
Chimney answers, “Because of recent developments. Recent developments that we wanted to speak to you about.” He glances at Eddie, frowning. “Eddie…”
Eddie points at the living room, shrugging. “I can wait in there while you talk –“
“No,” Maddie stops him, “no you can join.” She looks at Chimney, smiling. “I don’t see why he shouldn’t be here, right?”
           “I guess.”
Buck and Eddie share a cryptid look, slowly sitting across from Maddie and Chimney. Her brother fidgets, tugging on his fingers in the nervous way he would when mom or dad lectured him after landing in trouble. Although why he did it now, Maddie was unsure of. She reached across and grabbed his hand, waiting for when their eyes met to speak. “There’s something we need to tell you.”
His brows scrunch up, “Yeah… I get that.”
“It’s about,” Maddie searches for an entry point, unsure where she should start. “Well… you know at May’s party?” He tenses in his seat. “How we left a little early? That’s because Chimney noticed something and I – I put things together, and we had to go –“
           “Maddie I can explain –“
“Because all these signs added up and,” Maddie stops, blinking. She pulls away from Buck, “What?”            Buck stares at the table, shoulders hunched high. “Look, I was going to tell you but, well, we know what would’ve happened if this came out so soon after Abby showed up. And the party was the worst place if we wanted to keep this secret, I didn’t mean for it to happen there it just did! We thought it was better to take it at our own pace and – and let people in when we were ready, y’know?”
“Slow down Evan,” Maddie grabs his hands again. Squeezes until he gives her the floor. “What are you talking about?”
He pouts. “I was… you brought me here because you and Chimney saw us, right? At the photo booth?”
“No,” she says, “I wanted you here because I found out I’m pregnant.” Buck chokes, seizing under her grip. “But what are you talking about? Us? You and who else… and why should it involve Abby?”
“You’re pregnant?” he asks, eyes glistening with unshed tears. Buck tries closing his mouth but he cannot force his jaw shut. “I’m… I’m gonna be an uncle?”
“Yes, Buck, you are,” Chimney adds, leaning over the table. “But can we go back? What happened at the photo booth?”
Maddie studies her brother slowly shed his shock. Replaced with cheeks redder than his birthmark, failing at subtlety when glancing at Eddie. Eddie hides his face, Maddie imagining it in a similar state. With nothing there, her attention drifts and latches onto the first clue she finds.
A circular bruise on his neck near his collarbone. There’s no mistaking what it was.
“Oh my God,” she says, “Oh my God!”
Chimney sighs, “What? What is it!”
           “Buck. You and Eddie?”
“Buck and Eddie – oh,” He sees them in new light, understanding dawning. “Oh my God, you two are dating!”
Eddie reveals his own ruddy cheeks, hands switching tactics from shielding to squeezing Buck’s shoulder. “And you thought they knew!”
“I, I – uh…” Buck splutters, cornered. He points at Maddie, “You’re pregnant! I think that’s more important!”
“But you and Eddie,” she insists, “you and Eddie!” Maddie laughs, stress from the past few days seeping out of her. “I can’t believe – you and Eddie!”
“Yeah, yeah, me and Eddie…” Buck slumps into his seat, glaring. Clearly uncomfortable with the attention.
She sees where his thoughts drift, though, and tosses a lifeline. “I think it’s great, Evan,” Maddie says. Waits for when their gazes lock again. “Really.”
His stiffness eases the longer they stay like that, until a gooey smile spreads across his face. “Talking about great things,” Buck says, gesturing at her and Chimney, “a baby? You’ll be a mother and – and you have to tell me how it happened.”
“I think you know how it happened, Buck,” Chimney chuckles, “Plus, I think we should be asking that of you two.”
Eddie rolls his eyes, slinging his arm over Buck’s shoulders and pulling him closer. Buck instinctively leaning into Eddie’s side. Maddie pauses, stunned by how well they fit together. Hindsight makes everything obvious but she should have seen this coming. “We can compare stories,” Eddie says, “but since baby trumps new relationship, you two can start.”
Maddie nods, sliding one hand free from Buck’s hold and to Chimney’s. Tangling their fingers together. Uniting their family as they take their next steps into unfamiliar territory. Maddie expects the next nine months will be difficult and taxing. Not only with the baby but working while pregnant and then planning what comes after.
With her family at her side, Maddie feels confident in handling whatever challenge comes her way.

50* + buddie sorry but if you want to write both that is okay with me hehe
Read in AO3
@buckleysjareau , I couldn't help myself but to do both 49 and 50 from the Fluff/Angst Prompts List
I hope you'll enjoy this as much as I enjoy writing it.
Thank you for the prompts. 🤗🤩
The moment Eddie agreed to throw himself into the underground fighting scene, he never thought in a million years he would get addicted to the adrenaline roaring through his vein with every punch that followed. Eddie thought he would be able to quit anytime he wanted to, because he was still in control, he needed to be in control. He woke up every morning convincing himself that those days would be his last in the scene, that he would stop when he could, that he would not let himself astray more than it was, but every triumph and money stacks he received at the end of his wins made it harder and harder to quit.
Of course, things got out of hand because the next thing he knew, his opponent was not breathing and Eddie knew without intervention, the man was as good as dead. Calling for an ambulance to the scene was a risky move, but deep inside he knew he is a firefighter first, and so he braced himself for the consequences as he dialed the 9-1-1. Consequences that include exposing himself open in front of Bobby, confronting the ghost of his stewed anger towards Shannon and towards himself. Consequences that had forced him to talk with Frank, leaving out all of his skeletons and miles long disappointments for a stranger to see.
Now, the consequences of his bad decision had come back to taunt him yet again, forcing him to wait once more at the wrong side of the hospital room.
Moving Christopher’s weight from one side to the other, Eddie wipes away the stray tear stains painted on his son’s face who has his head cradled at the crook of Eddie’s shoulder, still sobbing silently. The hushed sobs compel Eddie to stifle his own as he inspects the gauze on Chris’ left elbow, examining his own aching knuckles.
Eddie’s focus shifted from their minor injuries as he looks up at the direction the clicking sound of booted footsteps belongs to none other than Sergeant Athena Grant, who is walking towards them with urgency and purpose.
“How is he doing?” Athena queries as she takes a sit beside Eddie, her back stiffs against the hard chair, staying alert with any impending news.
Eddie purses his lips and spats bitterly in a hushed whisper, “Are you asking about Chris or Buck?” Because right now, both of them are far from being okay by Eddie’s definition. Hell, he himself is far from okay at the moment, so excuse him for struggling to contain his emotion.
But credit to Athena, she does not sway a bit with his little outburst and simply clarifies, “both.”
“Sorry.” Eddie exhales roughly, wiping his face with his free hand.
Athena smiles empathetically. “Don’t be. We are all strung out with the news. I have talked with Maddie and Bobby. She will be here soon. The rest of the team will come once their shift is over.”
Eddie nods, grateful for her help because the thought of calling Maddie or the team totally skipped his mind with his sole focus fixed on his family and their safety. “Chris got some bruise on his elbow when he skinned himself falling down. Other than that, he’s quite shaken up. Buck on the other hand,” Eddie paused, pushing the queasy feeling down before continues, “he was barely responsive when they brought him in. The doctor said something about possible concussion and broken ribs.” Eddie breaks his eye contact with Athena, not wanting her to see his brimming tears.
“How about you, Eddie?”
“What about me?” Eddie retorts defensively, pulling Christopher tighter into his embrace, as if he is ready to pick up the boy and run away, away from this mess and nightmare.
“As far as I’m concern, you’re a victim too in this attack. So, tell me, how are you doing?” She repeats herself, demanding for a no-bullshit answer.
“I’m fine. Buck took the brunt of it.” That is definitely a ‘bullshit’ answer.
Athena arches an eyebrow, giving Eddie a skeptical look but does not pries further on the subject.
Instead, she proceeds with her business with, “Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?”
There it is, the million-dollar question Eddie has been dreading the moment he saw Athena walked down the corridor. Because to answer her questions, Eddie needs to relive the hellish moment again, visiting his past mistake and he is not sure if he has the gut to do it.
“Can we please do this after Tia Pepa picks up Christopher?” Eddie tries to compromise, ignoring how broken his voice sounds, because he really doesn’t want to subject Chris through the torment again.
Athena nods in understanding. “Sure. I’ll wait right here with you, or do you want to be alone?” She asks as she changes her posture, preparing to leave if Eddie wanted her to.
“No, stay please. I don’t want to be alone.” Eddie pleads, not sure what comes over him as the words leave his mouth.
“Sure, honey.” Athena relaxes in her seat, but her keeping her guarding stance.

///

“Are you ready, Eddie?” Athena starts, pulling out her notepad and pen.
Eddie nods, not trusting his words now because he would never be ready. All his life, he never would imagine himself being a victim, having caring countless victims in his few years of service, but today’s incident has changed the narrative.
“Do you recognize who hurt you? Hurt Chris and Buck?”
“Yeah. He uh… I uh… fought him once… during the street fighting, and uh, he lost quite a big sum that day.” Eddie grits his teeth, nausea building up behind his throat as he remembered the thrills he felt when he received the winning stacks, the elated face of Christopher when he bought him the latest Lego set using the bloody money.
“Do you have a name?” Athena proceeds stoically, not a bit fazed by Eddie’s dirty little secret.
“Jake…um, Jake Woodson? I think so, yeah.”
“How about you tell me what went down from the beginning.”
Eddie shuts his eyes, trying to recall the mirage of the daunting memories. He could feel his palm getting sweaty under the visible stress. He really doesn’t want to do this, but the son of a bitch needs to pay for hurting his family, and so Eddie perseveres.
“We were at the park. The one near the firehouse.”
*
“It’s getting dark. You think it’s time to go home yet?” Buck asked as he shoved his hands into the pocket of his brown jacket.
“Yeah. I think we burn enough of Chris’ energy for today. I’m tucking him tonight.” Eddie smiled cheekily at the prospect of Chris easily falling asleep.
Buck pouted. “You always tucked him in when he already burned out. It’s not fair,” the man half grumbled.
Eddie chuckled heartily, grabbing Buck’s elbow as they strutted towards Chris who was still immersed feeding the ducks. “But you love it.”
“I do, but we are stopping by the McDonald’s afterwards.” Buck flashed him an evil grin.
“No, we aren’t.” Eddie chastised.
“Hey Chris! How does a McFlurry sounds?” The shouts caught Chris’s attention right away and he beamed at the promise of dessert.
“You vile, vile man.”
“You love me.”
“I know I do.”
*
“We were walking back to our truck when he approached.” Eddie continues.
“Jake Woodson?”
Eddie grimaced at the name, but nods in confirmation.
“So, what happened then?” Athena prods as she tries to paint a clearer picture of the incident.
“We were completely blindsided. I was about to help Chris into his seat when suddenly this man shoved me to the ground, bringing Chris down with me. That’s how Chris…” Eddie gestures to his left elbow, hoping Athena would comprehend.
*
“Hey! Get away from my family!” Buck growled before pushing the man away from Eddie and Chris who were still stunned on the ground.
The man, who Eddie swears got bigger from the last time Eddie saw him, sneered at Buck and before Eddie could warned his husband, Jake grabbed Buck’s head and smashed it hard to the side of their truck, painting the metal red.
Eddie screamed as Buck collapsed in a heap, his face scrunched in a mixture of daze and pain as blood sluggishly trickled down his temple.
*
Eddie lets out a harsh sigh, looking down at the tear drops staining his jeans.
“Do you want to take a break?” Athena places her hand on the sobbing man’s shoulder.
Eddie shakes his head. He wants to get this done and over with.
“I want to help Buck, but Christopher was crying behind me. I couldn’t simply leave him alone. What if Jake attacked him?” Eddie sheds angrily at the tears that doesn’t seem to be stopping.
The torn feelings he had felt at that time was agonizing.
“So, I…I pushed Chris to hide behind the truck…oh God! I should help Buck faster! I should...I should…,” Eddie breaths bleakly at the thought as he shuts his eyes close, trying to replay the moment where he could do better.
Athena immediately kneels in front of Eddie, trying to calm down the man who is now borderline hyperventilating. “Eddie, Eddie! Listen to me. Listen. What you did was right. Buck would want you to put Christopher’s safety first.”
Eddie inhales, feeling his breaths stutter in his chest.
“You have to breath. Calm down now, Eddie. What you’ve been through is traumatic, but you have to breath.”
Eddie tries his darndest best to hold himself together.
“That’s right. Keep breathing, Eddie.”
“Okay. Okay.” Eddie chokes back the sobs.
“Are you good to continue?” Athena eyes him.
Eddie nods feebly as he levels down his breathing pace.
“When I got to them, Jake was kicking Buck in the chest.” Eddie swallows hard, recalling how Buck tried to cover his head and chest in a losing fight. “I threw some punches but he won’t relent. Keep snarking about how I should lose everything too like he did.”
“Do you know what that means?” Athena asks further as she jots down Eddie’s statements.
Eddie shrugged, completely clueless. “I don’t know. I just know that I won big that day. I haven’t fight him again afterwards.” He hangs his head low as shame and guilt slithers up his spine.
Eddie is pulled out of his self-loathing when he heard a female doctor asks, “family of Evan Buckley-Diaz?”
Both of them stand up in record time, meeting the doctor halfway who is smiling softly, but Eddie does not dare to let his heart hope, not until he could see Buck is alive and well for himself. Because the last time Eddie saw Buck, the love of his life was half-conscious with blood covering most of his face.
“I’m his husband. Is he okay?” In any other circumstances, Eddie is always proud to tell anybody who is asking that Buck is in fact his husband, but never like this. Not in this sterile hospital corridor surrounded by death and diseases.
“Your husband is going to be just fine.” She starts off with assuring note before continues, “he sustained a nasty concussion and two broken ribs, but he is very lucky there is no internal bleeding, neither in the head nor chest, just some major bruising. Head wound tends to bleed a lot, a fact that I’m sure both of you are familiar with.”
“Can I see him?” His voice timid. The smile that never leaves the young doctor’s face did little to nothing in comforting his racing heart.
“Of course, but he is asleep now. He will be disoriented and most likely in pain when he wakes up later, but other than that, he should recover just fine with plenty of rest.” The doctor finishes off cheerily.
Eddie lets out a breath he didn’t realize he’s holding. Buck is fine. He is fine. Buck is alive. The mantra resonates throughout his body, vibrating at a wild pace throughout each cell.
But he is pulled out of his stupor when Athena pats his back. “I knew his thick skull would come in handy sometimes.” She chuckles wetly, and Eddie swears he saw the Great Athena Grant sheds a tear.

///

It was almost midnight when Buck stirs groggily, whining unhappily at the assault of pain his body is experiencing.
Eddie approaches his husband almost immediately, calming the struggling man in a hush manner. “Easy Buck.”
At the mention of his name, Buck looks up hazily towards the caramel-brown eyes that hold his world. “Y‘kay? C’ris?” He slurred, flinching as he tries to swallow.
Eddie lets out a wet laugh at Buck’s question as he fetches the water and guiding his husband for small sips.
“We are both okay. Some bruises, but you’re the one who manages to land on this beautifully crafted hospital bed.” Buck doesn’t seem to miss the broken notes in the man’s jesting laugh, but he chooses to let it slides as he turns his head around the room, noting the absence of their son.
Seeing the confusion on Buck’s face as he starts to thrash around, Eddie know exactly who is Buck looking for. “Chris is at Abuela’s. He’s fine.” Eddie emphasis on the word ‘fine’, just so Buck would calm down in his bed.
Yet Buck gives him an unimpressed look, sensing some omission of facts through Eddie’s cracked voice.
Eddie sighs dejectedly. All the time they have spent together, obviously Buck could easily read through his lies even in his groggy state.
“Just some bruises when he fell, I promise.” Eddie confessed. “But you on the other hand…” Eddie tries to find the right word that won’t hurt so much, but suddenly his eyes starts to dampen again.
This time, in the private company of his lover and away from judging eyes, Eddie couldn’t help himself but to cry.
“I almost lost you so many times before, but nothing compares of almost losing you because of my own stupid mistake. I am so sorry, Buck. I swear I never thought it would come down to this.”
“Eddie, I’ll do it all over again just so you and Chris will be safe.” Buck’s voice is definitely stronger and Eddie wonders where does Buck pulls the strength from, because right now Eddie is feeling weak on his knees himself and if he had not been sitting, he would definitely collapse. As his tears fall free, Buck seems to be more alert than before and Eddie couldn’t help but to feel ashamed his outburst has ripped Buck from his well-deserving rest.
“Do you think I’m broken? Because you’re the one on the hospital bed, but here I am struggling to contain myself when I should be the strong one.” Eddie hangs his head low as more broken sobs escapes him.
“Eddie, look at me.” Buck cups Eddie’s chin with his right hand, wary of the IV lines as he pulls his lover’s face towards him. “Eddie, nothing is wrong with you. Struggling is what we do best, and people like you and me struggle because we care, we’re not giving up and we’re trying to stay afloat. Am I wrong?”
Eddie tries to look away, but Buck's face and arched eyebrow say that he demands a response.
“No, you’re not. You’re right.” Eddie lets out a small smile at Buck’s words of affirmation.
“Heck yeah, I’m right. I choose to marry you and I’ve chosen to stay with you throughout your struggles.” Buck plops down on the pillow. “But for now, I’m struggling to stay awake. Get in here with me?” Buck scoots over and pulls his blanket to make space for his husband, careful of the lines  and wires hanging around him.
“I’m sure it will be a tight squeeze.” Eddie shakes his head affectionately at Buck’s proposal, not that he would fight it much if Buck insists.
“Please. I sleep easier with you close to me.” And there is the puppy eyes attack and Eddie finally relents as he climbs onto the bed gingerly, trying not to jostle Buck’s ribs much.
“Athena was here. She said your thick skull is what saved you.” Eddie whispers against Buck’s shoulder, basking in the warmth that seeps through the thin hospital gowns.
Buck only smiles at the remarks, already half asleep.
Eddie knows he should update their family soon, but that is for future him to handle, because right now, he just wants this moment to be just for the two of them.
“I love you and all your struggles too.” One last confession before both of them paddles through their dreamland.

Lmao I’m too weak willed to not get pulled further into this AU. Basically at this point all this means is that leading up to Eddie Begins, Buck and Eddie have primed themselves for the Big Transition in their relationship. So instead of the fight club arc, Eddie gets a growth arc not rooted in violence. He has Buck to help him through some of rougher emotions that comes along with unpacking all his trauma, but it helps that they can bond over similar nights out stationed. It helps Buck, too, to process through some of the things he’s been too ashamed to unpack, because he’s always thought of being kicked out of the force as this great failure so it means something too deep for Buck when Eddie tells him the army just taught Buck what kind of person he was destined to be; how he wouldn’t have learned this intrinsic need to be actively saving people if he didn’t “fail” at what the army asked of him. That everything has led him into finding what he’s meant to do, and not to question the road he had to take to get there because every step is already behind him.
How it’s a lesson Eddie learns for himself, while he’s learning to let himself be happier while in the moment. That he comes to accept his marriage to Shannon wasn’t a failure because it gave them Chris and the decade or so between them gave them the ability to work as a team when needed to co-parent their son. It wasn’t a failure, because Eddie learns everything a husband isn’t so he feels comfortable entering a relationship with Buck, knowing full well there’s hope for a happy future in the end since Eddie’s more sure of his ability to be a good partner now.
So imagine these two working so hard to get to a point where they can safely and responsibly move forward with their relationship. Imagine how heated the moments would start getting, the closer they realize they are to taking That Step. Imagine the satisfaction for character growth when we see the lessons Buck learned with Abby actually stick, and what a good throwback it would be to s1 when Buck had tried so hard not to be sexual with Abby so as not to mess things up but in the end couldn’t help but start a relationship—and look at him now, and imagine that sweet gratification from Buck jumping into waiting without hesitation when it comes to Eddie. Knowing without a doubt that even the chance to start something with his best friend would be the best decision of his life, and he’d wait forever if he had to. (But he’s really hoping forever doesn’t last much longer, tbh.)
And then imagine Eddie Begins happens. And tbh, Buck wouldn’t act much differently lbr. Boy acted like his entire world was ripped from him when Eddie disappeared, so. I really don’t think that could get much better reaction wise. But man oh man the aftermath would be so much sweeter.
Just imagine the absolute knee-shattering relief Buck would feel at seeing Eddie again—haggard and worn but alive—and him and Christopher spending the night at Eddie’s bedside since the doctors insist on overnight monitoring. Imagine how Eddie doesn’t even fight Chris this time when he insists on staying with his Buck and his daddy, and Shannon doesn’t even say anything about it when she drops off a late late dinner for them before visitor hours close. Honestly, she almost looked like she was halfway considering asking to stay too, but Eddie is grateful she only looked at the three of them with a watery smile that was way too accepting to be anything other than defeat, and bowed out.
Imagine how full Eddie’s chest would be as he watches Buck hold a sleeping Christopher in the most awkward position Eddie knows can’t be comfortable while they’re both shoved into the crappy hospital recliner instead of the cot. Chris is still facing Eddie—unwilling to take his eyes off his dad the entire time he was fighting sleep—and Buck is gently rocking the chair with one foot propped against the edge of Eddie’s bed. Eddie is fairly certain Buck hasn’t realized Chris is passed out yet, because he’s just still humming some off tune pop song that was on the radio on the way to the station at the start of their shift this morning, one hand sifting through the soft curls at the crown of Chris’ head and the other idly flipping channels on the silent tv in the corner of the room.
Eddie realizes there’s no doubt about how much he loves the man next to him as he watches Buck’s—large, strong, gentle—hands brush down Chris’ hair to his his back, nothing but the picture of love and adoration as he sits next to Eddie at two in the morning in the hospital after Eddie nearly died. Eddie realizes this cramped room still feels like home, because Buck is with him and Chris is safe between them. Eddie realizes that there is no way he can make it without having Buck beside him in life the way he is now, for the rest of his life.
Eddie realizes it doesn’t matter that they haven’t figured out the intimate bits of their relationship; he’s had enough stirred within him the countless times he’s caught himself staring at Buck doing something stupidly endearing to know they’ll definitely figure it out with enough practice. And the practice is something Eddie is really, really looking forward to.
Eddie realizes—in between Buck sighing softly and giving up on the TV, switching the power off and changing tune on his humming, making it lower and harder for Eddie to hear as he scoops his arm under Chris and readjusts so his head is better supported—that Buck already knows how to integrate into Eddie and Christopher’s lives as a stepfather, because he’s already excelled at being such a positive adult influence in Christopher’s life that most of Chris’ teachers already assume Buck and Eddie’s relationship status.
Hell, they even had to sit over the kitchen table with receipts and job records and shit this year when tax season rolled around, because they had so many intertwining finances ever since Buck moved in it was just easier for them to do them together to make sure nothing got left out.
Eddie just realizes he’s always had this picture-perfect image of a family in his head and he’s built something so much better, and they’re crammed into a crappy recliner beside him and there’s nowhere else he’d rather be right now.
So in between one breath and the next, Eddie has asked, “Marry me?” like the words are light as air.
Air which chokes Buck, who freezes and has to check to make sure he hasn’t woken up the sleeping nine year old in his arms. He meets Eddie’s gaze with so much burning heat Eddie wishes there was a way for them to get a jumpstart on that practice. “You’re serious?”
“Would never joke about it, not with you,” Eddie tells him evenly, catching Buck’s eyes and refusing to let them go.
“Then yes. Yes, of course,” Buck grins, and it’s a blinding thing but Eddie just lets himself bask in it.
Anyway yeah that would have been cool for s3. Haven’t put much thought on how it would affect 3x16 and 3x17 but I’m sure there’s more you could explore still having Abby come back.
Either way anyway who has stuck along this weird not-fic ride with me thanks! My inbox is always open if anyone wants to chat meta shit like this with me.

You Can Take Buck Out of Firefighting, But You Can’t Take Firefighting Out of Buck
Prompt from @justsmilestuffhappens  linked here   Hope I did it justice, enjoy!
ao3 link
----
One second, Evan Buckley is driving down the freeway, trying not to be late and the next second, he has no idea what’s going on. He opens his eyes with no recollection of anyone or anything, except Maddie.
“Maddie, I’m going to be late.” He is almost out of bed before Maddie and someone else grab his wrists and gently propel him back into the bed.
“I’m sure the station will understand.” Maddie gestures to the three men and one woman next to her.
“What do you mean the station? I work at a bar, Maddie. I live in South America. Speaking of which, why did you and all of these people I’ve never met fly down here just to hear me get fired? I’m touched Maddie, really, but I don’t need an audience.” Everyone in the room looks confused, including Evan himself.
“What year is it, Buck?” The tallest man asks.
“It’s 2014. And my name is Evan.” He pulls out his phone and quickly tries to call Amy, he’s going to be late. Hopefully not too late. He needs this job. Amy never does answer.
“It’s 2020.” Maddie says gently.
“Huh?” Evan laughs to himself, but stops when he sees how grave everyone’s faces have become. “It’s 2014, I don’t know who paid you to make me think I’m losing my mind, but it’s not funny.”
“So you don’t remember your leg getting crushed by a ladder truck, or the tsunami?” The woman asks incredulously.
“Or me getting rebar through my brain. And then getting stabbed by your sisters ex husband.”
“Or me falling into a well?”
Evans face gets more and more confused the longer they talk. All those awful things happened to them? To him? There’s no way.
He bolts for the door and runs. He can’t be late to work. Again.
As he passes by the entrance to the hospital, he notices the words in English and how he has no idea how to get to work. All the streets look different and completely out of order.
Bobby, Chimney, Eddie, Hen and Maddie manage to catch up with Buck before he hails a cab. Hen snags a newspaper off a stand and promises to return it.
All of them are worried, but no one more than Eddie and Maddie. Their expressions turn downright panicked when Buck doesn’t believe the newspaper is legit. “You guys really go all out with your pranks, don’t you? Look I am flattered that you are going to all the trouble, but I really have to get to work.”
“At least let us walk you. I’m Howie, but everyone calls me Chimney.”
“I bet that’s a funny story.” Evan smiles and starts walking, thankfully in the right direction.
“It is.” Everyone choruses in sync.
By the time the 6 of them make it down to the beach, Evan understands where Chimney got his name, and knows everyone else’s names. They ask him a bunch of questions about LA (he’s never been), relationships (he hasn’t had one longer than 2 dates in years), and Christopher (sounds like a cool kid, but he can’t pretend to know him). But he can’t ignore the way one of the men, Eddie, keeps looking at him. Evan concentrates, but he can’t place him anywhere in his past. So he just silently appreciates the attention. Eddie’s cute, brooding as hell, but cute. Especially the way he scrunches his nose when somebody brings up Abby, especially when it involves a train crash. No clue what’s up with that.
The beach is packed and the pier is bustling with people. Down below the pier is a few pieces of construction equipment, working steadily on some sort of project.
There’s no bar that looks like the one Evan works at, but is has to be around somewhere. He’s been working there all summer, how could he have forgotten where it is? It’s not like it can just walk off.
Before he can look around, halfway down the pier there’s a sickening crack. Half the pier plunges into the sand right before his eyes. Evan turns around and everyone who was just with him runs down the pier ahead of him. Before he can even think, he jumps into action right beside Eddie. It’s almost like he’s done this before, because neither of them miss a step working side by side. They don’t even have to talk to know what the other needs. To hold pressure to a wound, or to grab the hand of a dangling victim.
Eddie almost doesn’t remember that Buck has amnesia, that’s how normal he’s acting. Jumping into help someone else, consequences be damned? That’s Buck alright, and Eddie can’t help but be proud. Even if Buck doesn’t think he’s a firefighter, he still acts like one. But he can’t help but think about what will happen if Buck can’t remember him. Their relationship.
“We make a good team.” Buck says, winking.
“LA’s finest.” Eddie replies.
There’s a knowing glance shared between Hen and Chimney and another between Maddie and Bobby. Eddie and Buck are both seemingly oblivious, but everyone else knows why they make such a good team, and it won’t go away even if Buck has amnesia. And that reason? A little something called love.
After every victim is accounted for, when the 6 first responders regroup, everyone looks at Buck curiously.
“I shouldn’t be surprised by you jumping into help, Buck.” Hen says, side eyeing him a little.
Buck just shrugs. Jumping in was as natural as breathing. Maybe he should quit bartending, because helping people: that’s his real passion. And the nickname’s kind of growing on him. Buck. Yeah, that feels right too.
--
Buck finally convinces the 118 to go home. He’s fine, he insists. Hen, Bobby and Eddie all have families to get home too. They reluctantly do, each making him promise to go to the hospital if he feels dizzy, starts throwing up, gets a headache, faints, etc. The textbook symptoms of a traumatic brain injury are interesting and all, but Buck’s fine.
Maddie and Chimney refuse to leave, and Buck gives up trying to talk them into going. So he walks down the pier, listening to the water lap against the shore and the muted bustle of people.
Could those people be right about him actually being a firefighter? He knew the way he had jumped in, most people didn’t even think about. He knew he liked helping people, and that’s what he had been doing today. Today. At the accident site, the one on the freeway. And then, nothing. His memory stops right there.
And then he remembers Eddie. What he feels for him: the love, the pride, the peace. He has to fix this, before Eddie leaves him too.
Buck sighs deeply, and stands there for a second. There was no prank. He should apologize, return to the station. Just as he turns around, he hears a scream.
Hanging from the pier is a teenage girl, and her father is begging for her to hold on. Buck looks around quickly, and catches his sister’s eye. Behind her is a spool of rope, probably left over from some sort of project.
Buck grabs the rope, while Chimney does the medical eval. Her hands are slipping and before she falls Buck catches her and forces himself to stay still. He wants nothing more than to just pull her up, but Chimney quickly tells him not too.
“I’m a firefighter. We got you.” Buck says, and he swears he hears Maddie cheer quietly.
After the girl is pulled to safety with the help of her core muscles, Buck wipes the dust of his shoulders. “Hot shot.” Maddie teases.
“I’m sorry I thought you were pranking me.” Buck says.
“Amnesia gone? What year is it?” Chimney says, carefully squeezing Maddie’s hand.
“It’s 2020, Chimney.”
“What day is it?”
“Friday.”
“Where do you work?”
“I’m a firefighter at Station 118 in Los Angeles, California.”
“Whew!’ Chimney mocks wiping the sweat of his forehead. “We don’t want to have to replace you.”
“Awww.”
“It’s exhausting having to train the newbies.”
“I wasn’t that bad!”
--
Later that night, Buck knocks on Eddie’s door. He answers it immediately, and his eyebrows etch together in concern.
“Are you okay?”
“I noticed how you looked at me today.”
“What do you mean?”
“You looked at me like you couldn’t keep your eyes off of me. It’s how Chimney looks at my sister.”
“I-uh.”
“Then I realized you’ve looked at me like that since you brought Christopher to me after the tsunami. It’s how I look at you.”
“You remember the tsunami?”
“Don’t you? Worst day of my life.”
“I thought you had amnesia.”
“Had.”
“So, you remember things now?”
“I do.”
“Buck!” A gleeful Christopher appears behind his father.
“Chris! How you doing, buddy?” Buck kneels down to hug his favorite kid.
“Good. Dad said you got hurt today.”
“I did, buddy. But I’m okay now.” Chris and Buck grin at each other, happiness radiating off of them. Eddie smiles softly in the background.
“Chimney texted and said you saved a girl. You done good, Buck.” Eddie says, teasing Buck fondly.
“Even a good firefighter when I don’t remember I am one.” Buck scoops Chris up into another hug, and doesn’t shift when Eddie wraps his arms around both of them.
“I thought I lost my best friend.” Eddie whispers into Buck’s ear.
“I’m not going anywhere. Not for a long time.” Buck says in his normal voice, moving to rest his forehead against Eddie’s.
“Good. Because you’re our Buck.” Christopher says.
And that he is.

Married
for @jellyfishinc
prompt:  Newly Married!Buddie fic where it's the first week or so back since they got married, and Buck starts to notice how different working at the 118 is now that he's married. With a lot of both of them, during random parts of the day, looking down at the ring on their fingers, like it still hasn't quite fully sunk in that he's really married.
warnings: swearing mostly i think
okay, i’m not going to lie that this didn’t turn out how I planned, but I’m still pretty happy with you and I hope that it’s okay. but thank you so much for your requests, they’re not usually what I write and I really enjoy it, so thank you heaps :)
“I can’t believe we’re actually married.” Eddie, who had been scrolling on his phone, looking up when he heard his husband’s voice speak suddenly, Buck was leaning on the couch beside him, leaning into his side as he looked down on the wedding band that was on his finger; eyes glued to the silver ring with something akin to fascination. Eddie smiled softly as he put his phone down, reaching his arm out and placing it around the younger man’s shoulder, pressing a kiss to his partner’s temple with a small smile of his own. ‘You’re so damn adorable.’ Eddie thought about saying that out loud, just to see the light flush that would paint the other’s cheeks at the words but he doesn’t; he keeps them to himself to treasure on moments like this.
“We’ve been married for a week now, baby.” Laughs Eddie, and Buck lifts his gaze to shift to his husband’s face. Buck feels giddy on the inside, beyond happy that he is now able to refer to the man that he loves as his husband. He narrows his eyes, knowing that his loved one was paying him out about the amount of times that he has caught the other staring at the ring on his finger with a gaze of wonder. “I know that, I guess it still hasn’t sunk in yet.” He admits and Eddie nods his head, able to understand what Buck is saying and how he is feeling about this all; he’s still amazed that he finally got to marry the man that he loved. Sometimes he’ll be laying there in bed at night, Buck against his side and just smile in the dark room; he was holding his husband in his arms. Someone who loved him unconditionally and someone he loved with everything he had in his heart.
“I never thought I would get married, ya know.” Buck speaks up after a moment of silence, and Eddie isn’t able to help the frown that appears on his face at the words that he had heard. He’s confused, anyone would be lucky to have Buck as their husband; he’s beyond loving and caring. Hell, Eddie would easily dub him the perfect husband.
“Why’s that, sweetheart?” Implored Eddie, his tone soft as Buck looked up at him at the same time that he shrugged his shoulders that was followed by a moment of silence between the two husbands. “I guess I just never thought I would find someone I wanted to spend my life with.” It’s simply said, and Eddie is once again able to understand what his husband is saying when he speaks. “But then I met you, and well; you obviously proved me wrong.” Laughed the blonde with a happy expression openly on his face, eyes falling from Eddie’s face to land on the ring on his finger once more, for the tenth time that day.
“You guys are so disgustingly cute.” That was a new voice that had entered, both of the men looking up to see Hen walking towards them with a smug expression of her own. Eddie rolls his eyes at her friend, taking a moment to flip her off as she laughed in response. “Seriously, Karen and I are supposed to be the cutest couple. Knock it off.” She plops down onto the seat by the kitchen table, a moment later they all heard the sound of Chimney’s voice as he bolted up the stairs.
“Ey, how are the newlyweds? You liking married life, Buckley?” Chimney’s bright and happy tone makes Buck chuckle in turn, nodding his head the moment that the question left his friend’s lips. “Yeah, he keeps staring at his ring.” Eddie responds for him, and with an annoyed yet playful expression as he reaches down and jabs two fingers into his husband’s side, being rewarded with a loud yelp and the other shifting away. “Oi, you little shit!” Announces Eddie as he turns his body, about to do the same notion back that Buck was already preparing for when Bobby’s voice breaks through to them.
“Alright children, break it up.” Their Captain laughs as he moves over, walking passed and playfully kicking Buck’s leg of the couch before he began to make dinner for the firehouse. “Wanna give me a hand here, kiddo?” No one had to look up to know that the question was being directed at their blonde friend, who didn’t want a second after the words were said to jump to his feet happily. With a bounce in his step that everyone loves to see, he joins his Captain in making food; the two of them talking amongst themselves as they worked. “You know, the first time I was married I was the exact same as you, son. I couldn’t believe I was actually married.” Bobby speaks suddenly, eyes soft and loving as he looks at the man he loves as a son who has a beaming on his smile.
Bobby loved seeing his team this happy, seeing them carefree and not drowning in the grief that this job forced them to endure.
“Yeah, I don’t think it’s fully hit me yet. I’m actually a married man, now.”
Bobby doesn’t bother with a response to the words, instead he just reaches over and ruffles the blonde hair with a chuckle. Glaring playfully, Buck bats his hands away with a complaint on his lips that Bobby doesn’t really catch.
-------------------
“You fucking idiot! What the hell were you thinking?” Eddie doesn’t flinch away from Buck as the younger man yells at him in the middle of the firehouse. He doesn’t flinch back because he can see the tears sliding down his cheeks, which are flushed in anger, and the fear that was still written all over his face. Yeah, Buck was angry right now, but Eddie understood that it was from nearly losing the man that he loved. He understood that fear because he felt it every single time they had a shift together, after every call where he thinks about all the things that could have gone wrong. Instead, Eddie doesn’t say anything as he pulls his husband into his arms, shushing him with a quiet voice and his hand stocking soothing motions on his back.
“We’ve been married two weeks! I thought I was already going to lose you!”
“I know, but I’m still here. You had my back, and I’m okay.”
Bobby had forced Hen and Chimney to leave to give the two men their privacy, he himself giving them a concerned look before he too let them alone. And both of the men were so thankful that they didn’t have the prying eyes of their team to witness this, but they also could have chosen to do this when they got home. They shouldn’t though, shouldn’t let the fear and anger simmer for longer than what was necessary.
“Two weeks, Eddie! You fucking asshole.” Buck is no longer yelling, but instead his voice breaks as he pulls away from his husband, looking down on the ring on his finger and taking a deep breath. Eddie knows that it’s helping him to calm down, so he takes the other’s hand in his so that Buck can see both of their rings. Buck ends up taking Eddie’s hand and twisting the ring around as he manages to calm his breathing, Eddie helping him through it without even using any words.   “I can’t promise I won’t do it again, baby. This is our job and we know the dangers that come with it.” Eddie says unprompted and Buck deflates as he reluctantly nods his head in agreement, because this was something that he already knew. “I-I know, I know that.” His voice is still horribly shaking, but Eddie is able to see how much he has calmed down now that he’s gotten that short moment to yell his feelings. “But you need to know that I will always fight like hell to come back to you and Chris. Okay? I will always fight my hardest because I know you will too.”
Eddie pauses for a moment, eyes looking so deeply at Buck when he other finally lifts his gaze to look at him. “I have a family I need to come back home to, I have you guys who need me. So I will always fight like fucking hell to come back.” Finishes Eddie, and Buck searches his eyes like he’s looking for something that Eddie isn’t saying; but after a beat of silence he sighs as he nods his head.
  “You’re still an asshole.”

he is your world (you just don't know it)
It’s not that she wants Eddie to hurt, not at all. Shannon loves him, respects him, and if it were in her hands, she would give him absolutely everything in the world that could make him happy.
or
Shannon Diaz gets to live and it changes everything.
CHAPTER 5: CHRISTMAS
READ ON AO3 - OTHER CHAPTERS: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Christmas is her favorite holiday.
She loves the lights and the trees and the fact that since last year, she is able to hold her boys close once more. It feels magical and just like last time, it fills her with contentment and a sense of family that she hardly feels at any  other time of the year, apart from Christopher’s birthday.
And this year, everything feels a little more with Buck around.
With their combined forces, the two of them drag Eddie to absolutely every Christmas store and are planning to stay all in the Diaz house on Christmas Eve, so they can have presents first thing in the morning with everyone there. She is happy that they had managed to fit together well, the three of them, and Shannon knows she has to cherish these times, mostly because no one knows what the future is going to look like. She is confident, however, that they are building a foundation of a family that will prevail, even when they add new members with time.
That’s why it’s such a bummer to know that both Eddie and Buck have to work on Christmas.
There was a rotation they couldn’t change and the entire team had to work on that day and while Shannon understood, Christopher was having a hard time with it. Her son was as close to perfect as he could get, but he was just a little kid and having two of his favorite people away on such an important day made him truly sad. Even when she promised to take him to the station to catch a glimpse of Eddie and Buck, he still had spent the week leading to Christmas with a frown that did not belong on his face. It almost makes her want to cancel the whole thing.
When Buck and Athena plan the Christmas’s party in a ‘super secret Christmas chat’, Buck’s words clearly, she is the first to tell Christopher and he of course, promises with his pinky that he will keep the secret from his dad, but her ex-husband clearly knows something is up when the little one comes back to his usual smiley self. He doesn’t ask, however, mostly because he catches the amused looks between Buck and Shannon.
She doesn’t think anything is weird when Buck appears on her door, because they have been coordinating what food she and abuela are gonna bring to the celebration, but her eyes narrow when she sees him balancing himself on the balls of his feet.
Like he is nervous.
And honestly no one can blame her for being a little wary of a man coming to her house like that, since the last time this happened Eddie had told her that he had become the underground Rocky, so she just eyes Buck suspiciously and closes the door behind it.
“Am I supposed to help you to hide a body?”
The joke has the expected effect because she sees Buck smiling instantly, that cocky grin that screams trouble.
“Would you?”
“If it’s not Eddie’s,” she shrugs, unable to not smile back. “I probably would need a bit of an explanation if it was him”
They both giggle and move effortlessly to the kitchen, where he takes the juice he likes to drink from the fridge, and she gives  him time to say whatever he has to say. They are friends, but for some reason this doesn’t seem like a visit without meaning.
After a few seconds, she passes the glass and he thanks her with a smile, but doesn’t drink.
“I came here to invite you to the Christmas’s party.”
… Wasn’t she invited before?
“I’m on the group chat, Buck; you added me. ”
“Yeah, but like…” He seems at lost, like there are a million things trying to get out at the same time, and she recognizes it because Chris does that when everything is a bit too much to express it. The only solution to that is to be patient.
“Use your words, Buck.”
He sends her an annoyed look, acknowledging that he is being momed, but takes a deep breath.
“I wanted to invite you. As my family.”
And whatever she was expecting to hear, it was totally not that. Before she even starts to having time to process what that means, his voice is back, talking a million words per minute.
“I know you are going for Eddie and Christopher already and they are my family too, I also know that. But Maddie is my family and she is going for Chimney too, like at the same time, cause she kinda belongs to that side too. And for a long while you were my only friend and I just… You were there for me when no one was and this is my way to tell you.” His face is red, and she is not sure if it’s because of his words or because of the lack of air. “You kinda belong to my side too. I wanted to make sure you knew that.”
She has no idea what has made him say all of this, to show up at her house to blurt out how much she meant to him, but Shannon has the urge, like million times before, to hug him so hard that it hurts.
Of course, she does.
Eddie is all hard against her when they hug, a solid presence, and while Buck is even taller, there is a warmth that makes her feel instantly giggly.
“How does Eddie survive this amount of cheesy? Oh my god.” While her voice is amused, there are  too many emotions for her to hide. “Of course I will go to the Christmas party, I was already going for you, buddy.”
+++
She doesn’t know she is staring until someone pokes her arm and Maddie Buckley appears beside her, all grin and warm smile.
“I don’t think I have ever seen my brother this happy.” Shannon can hear the sincerity in her voice and she has to turn around again, to watch Buck and Eddie play with Christopher a little more. They are in a little bubble, too wrapped in each other to notice they are being watched. Her heart gets a little bigger thinking that as perfect as they look, there is always room for her there.
“Eddie either.” It’s a bit painful to know that she was never able to make him this happy, not because he didn’t love her, but because they didn’t fit in the same way he does with Buck. But she has learned to accept it and hope that one day, she will find her partner just the same.
Both women spend a couple of seconds in silence and Shannon doesn’t have to read minds to know that they are both thinking in how glad they are that destiny made those two find each other.
“I’m ready to fight you to death for the godmother rights to their next kid, Diaz. ”
“Oh, bring it on , Buckley.”
