the saddest thing i've learned this summer is that after a few generations in a lab, isolated from the natural world, slime molds lose the ability to collaborate. it makes sense; they don't have any reason to make those huge fruiting bodies and work together anymore. but it's still so devastating to me that the cells can no longer speak to each other. they've lost their language.

but the happiest thing i've learned is that after losing their INCREDIBLE ability to communicate (please look up physarum metro system), the lab grown slime molds don't isolate themselves. instead, they begin to work together in small groups, slowly relearning how to communicate in this hostile environment. i love slime molds so much guys

Isn’t it so strange that we are drawn to things that hurt us?

Think about it. The media we consume, the people we cling to: An episode of a show could make us cry but we’ll label it as “good” for a multitude of reasons. A parent may say something horrible to us yet we tell them we love them every night. Why is that? How can we love things that cause us pain?

I believe that, deep down, we are optimistic. A race, or species of people who see good in something, whether that be subconscious or not. No matter how much a “pessimist” may see the world in defeat, he still yearns for something.

another one of my favorite genres of safety sign is when there is no official, fancy sign made with carefully chosen wording and sturdy sign materials, just average humans using whatever they can find to try to keep each other safe

like yes these would be very scary to encounter in the actual place itself, but just looking at them I think they’re beautiful. some stranger I’ll never know has explored the same places as me and they are trying to keep me safe. I love that

Infodumping to random strangers irl about things you love and they start listening and show interest and share what they also know is a special feeling. Like I was at a theme park resting at a planter with flowers and there were many different types of bees and wasps all over the flowers and someone part of a group pointed out that there were bees and I piped in and said how these bees are harmless and how there were bumblebees and honey bees. And I started talking about bee behavior and why bumble bees are bigger and fuzzier than their honey counterparts. And the group were listening and talking about how genuinely cool that was. And I was like "Oh! So that's one of the reasons of being alive :)"
