//help i got my best friend to read inkheart and we watched the movie together last night. i had forgotten that it's not actually mentioned that dustfinger has a family until he actually goes and sees roxane in inkspell (and even then it's pretty vague for a while), which is crazy. my friend and i were having so much fun picking apart all the horrible inaccuracies and poor choices made for the movie so when it mentioned dustfinger's family and roxane in particular, my poor friend was irate that they would give dustfinger a family for no apparent reason. she was particularly puzzled that they would pick the name "roxane" since it doesn't seem to match the vibe of all the other inkworld names that she knows about. i had to sit there stoic acting like "oh yeah so weird they gave him a family what a horrible choice dang filmmakers departing so drastically from the book" and all the while i just know she's got a big storm coming in books 2 and 3. i'm so sorry my friend...

Also, not necessarily terribly relevant information in most threads but my interpretation of Pavel sees him losing his mum to illness at eight years old and his father, post Elizaveta's death, got more and more distant. Pavel, when he enlisted in Starfleet Academy at such a young age, had the status of emancipated minor that allowed him to do so. The Academy didn't make that public knowledge on his file, but with enough digging, one would figure that out. He also doesn't see it as some big secret, but with him being so young and post the Kelvin incident, you could imagine the hesitation among many captains and admirals on letting such a young man on a starship. Andrei is still alive and well, but he and Pavel see each other very rarely.

Why am I talking about this? Because I'm thinking of Pavel at the transporter controls as Vulcan's collapsing and he knows what it is like to lose the mother you love so much and what makes it worse that time is that he believes he's the cause of it.

Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."

Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.

These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!

Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!

Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.

So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.

Listen, you should never film strangers in public without their consent, but I swear there need to be fines or something for people who do that shit in some spaces. For example: I had to go to the ER last night, and some jerk filmed a woman who just came in and was clearly having an asthma attack. She immediately got to go back, and he was unhappy about that. Believe me, I get that it sucks having to wait when you're in pain, but you don't get to pick who deserves care when. The medical system in the US is a nightmare, and the ER could be the worst moment of someone's life. No one deserves to be recorded because some jack ass believes someone doesn't look like they need care.

This is fine to reblog. People who film strangers should be shamed if nothing else.
