ik this movie was based on a book but i have not read it. forgive me if, when i play around with the rules of jumping, it violates what the book says a jumper can do. I’m gonna operate with the best understanding i can. also i’m changing the ending woooo

At fourteen, you met a boy. His name was Elliot Rhodes- and he was a jumper.

At first it was freaky, sure. Finding out that teleportation is real? It would freak anybody out.

But it... it also explained a lot of things. It explained the way that you’d always wake up in your bed when you swore you passed out on the couch. It explained the way that you’d sometimes walk in the front door, not really remembering the bus ride home. It explained how you’d pop into a different room when you’d only taken half as many steps as you needed to.

Were you a jumper, too?

You met Elliot when you were fourteen, and life was good for five years. He was your best friend, he was more than that. He helped you learn how to jump, helped you hide it from your parents, from the school. The both of you knew that you should be hiding your ability, could feel that it was a secret you had to keep, but didn’t quite know why.

Then, five years into your relationship, when you’d finally figured out how to live, how to use your powers to make a living without being found out, when you were just about ready to leave your parent’s place and move into the cabin in Canada his parents left for him-

Death came for you, on his pale white horse. But it was his hair that was white, instead. And he didn’t come for you, exactly.

Roland Cox. He appeared at Elliot’s home, and killed him. Then, before you even had your hand on your phone to call the police, someone else jumped into the room.

You’d lashed out at him, throwing him away from Elliot, but he pushed you back, getting right to business.

He knew who Roland was. He knew why he’d come. He introduced himself, his name was Griffin- and he offered you a chance to help him get back at Roland.

Griffin didn’t really hold up to his word. He couldn’t trace Roland any better than you could’ve, but you were happy to have an ally, someone who had a mission, and a mission that would keep you out of your grief. You channeled your anger into hunting paladins, just like Griffin did. He wasn’t the easiest person to get along with, but he was a good guy... somewhere, deep down.

He was somewhat understanding of you. He recognized your grief, found it similar to his own. And, in the four years you’d been hanging out with him, you’d become a pretty skilled fighter. You’d learned the tricks- you were a paladin hunter.

It was a pretty solid new life. Given the superpowers and the dead boyfriend and the newfound target on your back from some ridiculous religious zealots, you could’ve done a lot worse.

And then, along came David.

David Rice. You’d seen him a thousand times, even if it wasn’t actually him. He was just another jumper who’d never had a run-in with the paladins, who’d never lost someone to the paladins, just another idiot who robbed a bank (unoriginal), and took his girlfriend on an ill-advised trip (bland). There was nothing exceptional about David Rice.

Well, he was cute. A little.

Okay, fine, he’s really cute. He’s a jackass, but he’s got a sweet smile. And he’s still a little puppy dog, following after a girl that he’s not into, but he’s convinced himself he’s still in love with.

Textbook. You’d seen it a thousand times. It was something that a lot of jumpers did, using their new power and money and suave to find the person they were in love with before things changed, and wooing them. It always worked, at first, but things fell apart, because those amateurs could never keep it together. Even if they did manage to keep their partners out of the claws of the paladins, the secrets or the lying did them in. Most of the time, these jumpers weren’t even in it for the people, anymore. Just like David- he didn’t love her, not anymore. He just loved the idea of getting what he’d always wanted.

When you saw him, at a bar in London, you had this quick little thought, ‘he’s not gonna last long.’

No, no, he was more impressive than that. He showed up at the Colosseum, and Griffin followed, assuming that the paladins weren’t far behind. And he was right, he always was, and you got to have plenty of fun moving around and fucking with paladins.

“Ya know,” you said with a laugh when one of them had their eyes on you, their cables tearing up another priceless stone wall, “you sure don’t have much respect for history.”

They managed to get a cable around you, and you felt that familiar tingle of lots and lots of electricity roll through you. But you were used to this, and you slipped out of your outer layer, then using the fabric to hold onto the cable and jump it through a wall, so it couldn’t be yanked out by any human force. Now, it was useless, and they had one less weapon.

You jumped in front of them, and slipped your jacket back over your shoulders.

“Loose fabric,” you said with a smirk, then landed a strong punch across his jaw.

You jumped back to Griffin’s lair with unconscious paladin in tow, and quickly handcuffed him to the usual spot. Griffin wasn’t far behind with the other, but then, David appeared too.

Griffin kicked him out, fast.

“Yeah, he’s dead in a week, tops,” you said with a shake of your head. Griffin rolled his eyes, and started his work with the same level of anger and annoyance that he always did.

A few hours passed in silence. Griffin had a new controller, so you let him ramble on about whatever game he was playing while you stretched out on the short couch you’d swiped from a closing furniture store a few months back. It was the closest to peace you ever seemed to get anymore, at least whenever you hung out with Griffin. But then David came back. He had nagging questions, they always did, when they managed to get ahold of Griffin. It usually didn’t change their fates.

No, what changed their fates was when someone they cared about died. It happened to Griffin. It happened to you. And when he discovered his dad dead, it happened to David, too. So he wanted to help hunt Roland.

Join the club.

David gathered up the most recent intel Griffin had on Roland- which just so happened to be what you’d given him, four years ago. You watched from across the room as he and Griffin got into a bit of a tiff.

Griffin pulled out the scars on his neck, to prove to David the high stakes he was messing with. That caught your attention- Griffin wasn’t one to be vulnerable.

“Look, forget it! Forget Roland. Don’t waste your time.” Griffin righted his shoulders, taking a step back. “Just leave it to me.” He went off to his business out of your line of sight, which just left David. You still hadn’t really said a word to the man, too focused on Griffin’s drama to pay the new guy much attention. But you stood, taking a step closer to him, so now you could at least see Griffin working at his safe. Like always when he pulled the key from around his neck, you looked away. David hadn’t yet learned that lesson.

Just like it had been when you first arrived, David awkwardly turned his back to the safe while Griffin entered it. You still didn’t quite know what was in there, but you knew it was important, and you knew it was dangerous. There were a few obvious conclusions you could leap to.

“I’m-” David started, letting out a little breath. He really wasn’t prepared for any of this, was he? How long had he been jumping without running into the paladins?

“I was thinking that if we do this together, we could get him.”

“Oh, no,” you said with a bit of a laugh, laying your head back against the stone wall. “He’s a solo act. He only keeps me around ‘cause I’m so charming.”

“No, you’re not,” Griffin threw over his shoulder, and you only laughed at him. “Look, I’m sorry, but I don’t play well with others.” When you heard the safe close, you lifted your head back to the two of them, and watched as Griffin paced toward the doorway. You followed only after David did, and noticed him heading toward one of his vehicles, an old trailer- why Griffin liked to mess with it before he jumped, you didn’t quite get. It wasn’t going to move, anyway.

“Do me a favor, yeah?” Griffin asked David, “Don’t be here when I get back. Find a rock, crawl under it, stay there.” He turned back to David, and you watched with a raised eyebrow from against the doorway.

“ ‘Joi woo’, brother,” He said, and you rolled your eyes. “That’s ‘goodbye’ in Chinese.”

For some reason, you didn’t think it was.

He stabbed a knife into the tarp and jumped, and though you hoped that was the end of it, David followed him through his jump scar.

Perfect. Just perfect.

You followed as well, hoping to at least keep David out of trouble. When he followed Griffin, you just kept pace beside him, sticking to him in a way you knew would annoy him. You were like a bystander, letting the two of them figure out their annoyances with each other, staying out of it. It took him what seemed like half of the length of Tokyo until he finally got around to the point.

“And I know where to find Roland.”

“Why didn’t ya lead with that?” You asked, smacking the back of your hand against David’s shoulder.

Griffin turned away, but the two of you followed. He swiped a car, you loved when he does that, because it’s always a really nice one, and you get to lean out of it and feel the wind. David took shotgun, and that’s fine, he’s the one with the special information or whatever. Didn’t matter, you could just enjoy the way that Griffin drives. He’s fun.

All the sudden, David jumped to an airport, and the both of you followed. After a quick conversation, it was time to jump back to the lair, get some weapons together. You pulled on your loosest hoodie, knowing you’d probably need it, if they were bringing cables to whatever fight you were about to have. Was there a plan? It’s not like you were listening, but it didn’t seem to you like David had exactly explained where he planned on finding Roman.

“Hey, what the hell?” You snarled when he jumped into the lair with his little girlfriend. “Oh, no, no, you can not bring her here. No way.”

“Look, I gotta keep her safe, alright? Where’s Griffin?”

“Out front. You have to get her out of here.” Your words fell on deaf ears as he charged out to get Griffin, and you watched with a bit of annoyance as the girl followed. What was her name? Millie? Poor lamb probably didn’t know anything of what was going on at all.

You heard whispering behind you, and turned around with a drop of your heart. Oh, this was bad, this was bad. They’d used- they had a wormhole, right into the lair.

“Griffin!” You shouted, and not a moment later he appeared beside you, the same look of dread on his face that you were feeling in your chest. David appeared, then, and Griffin turned on him instantly.

“What have you done?”

“Griffin-”

“Where does this thing go?”

“We gotta go.”

“David, what did you do?!”

The both of them jumped away, and it seemed like you were the only one who had any sense at all.

You jumped immediately to the mouth of the lair, where you found Millie, looking confused and terrified. Naturally. Good for her, honestly, for keeping it together as much as she was.

“ ‘ello, love,” you said, “Millie, right?” You took hold of her hands and jumped her away, far away, where she’d be much safer. On the other side, you waited for just a moment for her to get her wits together, so she’d register your words.

“Stay here, okay? I mean it. Don’t go outside. There’s water and food and power, you’ll be fine. Just- seriously. Stay here.” You jumped back, then, to the mouth of the lair, hoping that when you entered, you wouldn’t be interrupting something important.

Well, judging by the use of Griffin’s flamethrower, something important was happening.

There were two men, plus Roland. As much as you wanted to take on Roland yourself, Griffin seemed to have that covered, and there were others you needed to deal with. With just a grab to the shoulder, one of them took a nice fun drop into the Mariana Trench.

What? You’d read a book on it, once.

The other was charred to a crisp, it seemed, and so you went looking for the only other person unaccounted for.

“David?” You called into the lair, and you heard him groaning, along with the crackle of electricity.

“Where’s Millie?” He asked, and you rounded the corner to see him strung up to the ceiling.

“Somewhere safe, relax,” you said, shucking your hoodie off of your shoulders to wrap the fabric around your hands and grab onto the cables. Once you had them, you could jump away easily, pulling them off of him. You jumped back, slipping your hoodie back on, and gave him a cocky smile.

“Loose fabrics,” you said, then jumped away to try to find out what Griffin was up to.

A double-decker bus, that’s what. Then came Roland, and then came Griffin with the flame-thrower. When they both disappeared into the jump scar, David rounded on you, narrowing his eyes.

“Where’s Millie?” he snarled, and you took a step back.

“She’s fine, I told you! She’s safe!”

“Where is she?” David roared, and you shoved him away from you.

“She’s fine! Christ, boy, you don’t even love her, anyway!”

That caught him off guard.

“What?”

“Oh, god,” you groaned, turning your head before snapping your eyes to him, more ferocity in your gaze. “You know you don’t. You’re just holding onto the last thing you had when things were normal.”

“Where is she?” He said again, taking an intimidating step toward you.

“I get it, okay?” You said, though now you were yelling. “I get it. But you’re putting her in danger! David, just let her go. You’re never going to be able to protect her. Not from them.” David’s eyes widened for just a moment, and then he looked down. You could see it as he gave in.

“Let me take her home. At least let me do that.”

“Sorry,” you said softly, “The place I put her, I- I can’t let anyone else see it. You gotta understand.”

Before it could get any worse, Griffin threw himself through the jump scar.

“Nice,” he said as he righted himself, then immediately opened his safe. “The whole lot of them are in that apartment.”

“Oh, you’re finally gonna use the safe?” You asked, watching as he punched a few buttons.

“I’ll take ‘em all out while they’re still there.”

“That’s Millie’s apartment!” David said, and Griffin turned to him with a shrug.

“She’s not there,” he said, nonchalantly, as though it was obvious. What’s the harm in destroying the apartment if no one innocent dies in it?

Griffin readied the safe and jumped away, leaving you and David behind. You turned to him, raising your gaze to his. He still looked vaguely angry.

“She’s-” You turned your head to the side, before you could finish the sentence. You hadn’t told anyone about the cabin, not even Griffin. “She’s in Canada. Near a lake. She’s got water and power, nobody knows about it but me. She’s fine. But-” You gestured toward where the jumpscar to her apartment used to be, “Now she’s got nowhere to go back to.”

“I know where her mom lives,” David said, shaking his head. “I’ll take her there.” You nodded slowly, then brought your gaze to his. He had- he had really blue eyes. Strikingly blue. You knew he couldn’t get to the cabin without following your scar, so you made him wait for you, made him wait until this moment ended. He didn’t seem to mind.

“Hey, thanks,” he said after a moment, “You got her out of there.” He was speaking a bit gentler now, and this tone of voice you could certainly get used to. Was he being genuine with you? That was new.

“Well, she seemed important.”

“Yeah,” David said, a small smile finally growing on his face, and even though it was dark, you could swear you saw him begin to blush. Bashful little fucker. “We never even- Rome, I-”

“Save it,” you said with a smile, reaching out to take his hand, which was surprisingly warm. You jumped him to the cabin, and found Millie curled up on the couch, looking out the window at the lake.

“Sorry about all this, love,” you said, letting David have his moment.

“Just take me home,” she said with a bit of a whimper, and you shook your head, even as you walked to the cabinet to grab a packet of crackers.

“Sorry, love, that apartment’s gone. Kinda had to. Hope you understand.”

“What?” Millie asked in disbelief.

“Really, (Y/N)?” David asked over his shoulder, before taking Millie’s hands and jumping her out of your cabin.

You were meant to move here, with Elliot. This wasn’t even technically your place, even though you’d taken it up. Every now and again, you still missed him- but now that Griffin had taken care of Roland, it didn’t hurt so bad anymore.

Four years was a long time to heal, maybe. But you’d needed it. And now that you had, and Roland was gone, and the world was just a bit safer for you- maybe you could consider trying again.

Maybe with someone that had strikingly blue eyes. And surprisingly warm hands.

Are you still there?

/ Part 4 /

If I ever felt like my feet were going to fall off, it was today. I has just successfully passed my physical fitness test. I was feeling great, but I honestly couldn’t feel my legs. The whole night before I had been practicing to get over those walls over at the training obstacle. Which meant that that none of us in our barrack got that much sleep last night, with Lewis and Richard having been at the map exercise at dusk.

But here I was once again, at night wondering around to find Skip. I wasn’t completely sure which barrack he was in, but I was determined to check up on his ankle, which had once again been bothering him today. I knew this was inappropriate, but I wasn’t going to drop this. He needed it supported for tomorrow for him to keep it from overexerting.

“Nurse!”, came a call from behind me. The voice was so sharp it made me jump. When I turned around I was met with a piercing hazel gaze. It was the Dog company lieutenant, Ronald Speirs.

“Forgive me sir, I’m looking for E-company, Second Platoon. A private needs first aid”, I quickly explain. He just looks at me with even more determination. He then offers me his hand, which I shake firmly. “Ronald Speirs”

I smile at little: “Sonja Winters”. At that the corner of his mouth turns up and he smirks. “I think everyone in this regimen knows who you are, Nurse Winters.” Then he once again turns serious. “You do realize that this could get you into some trouble. With the higher ups and with the men”, he scolds. It’s clear to see the irritation in his eyes.

“As I said sir, I just need to check up on a comrade”, I reason. I knew he was correct, but I still wanted to make sure Skip was fully alright.

“Well then, Follow me”, he says and turns around. And we walk very very quietly.

Once we are in front of the barrack, I thank him. But before I can even fully get my thanks out, he walks away. What an odd man.

I knock on the barrack door timidly. When the door opens I am greeted by Bill. “The hell are you doing here, come in you mick”, he says and quickly pulls me inside. “You outta your mind Bambi, there are slimy men all over the place”, he then scolds.

I look around the room and see most of the men in looking at me. I turn to Guarnere to ease my nerves. “I just came to see Skip, Bill. No one except Lt.Speirs saw me”, I softly try to calm him.

His eyes almost bulge out of his head. “Okay let’s talk about crazy maggots then and not slimy men”, he grunts. Skip luckily comes to my rescue and bows with his hand out “Milady, how can I be of service?”

I grin and take a cotton bandage from my pocket. “Not this again, I don’t need any bandages”, he groans. I push his shoulders and sit him down on a bed. “Private Muck, your ankle is acting up again, it needs to be supported so the twinge doesn’t come back and have worse causes! Do you want Sobel to have you out of training?”, I ask with my hands on my hips.

“Listen to Bambi, Skip. Better have it wrapped up now, than in a cast tomorrow”, Joe comments from his bed. I smile and nod at him. Sweet Joe Toye always having my back.

Everyone goes back to their own things as I lower myself to bandage Warren’s ankle tightly. Once I’m done I give him a bandage roll. “Have this near, because with all the sweating we do, this probably will be ruined soon. Once you don’t feel hesitation to step on the ankle, take it off and save it for later. I know you don’t want to take a day off, but please be merciful with these skinny things”, I gently guide him.

He just pats my head and smirks. “Okay Bambi, wouldn’t want to disappoint you.” I shake my head at his antics. “Think of Faye when you take care of yourself, God knows she wouldn’t want her sweetheart hurt”, I reason with a gentle grin. The way Skip talked about his sweet Faye Tanner was adorable. I actually gave him a couple romantic poems from my books so he could use them in his letters. It was a little secret of ours, the guys would ruin the sweetness of the gesture.

I stay at the barrack for a little while. Chatting with Muck, Don and Penk. I mostly just sat and listened...and giggled. These boys lightened my heart with their jokes.

“Let’s get you back before someone comes looking”, Joe says jumping up. I shake my head “I can find my way out”, I say and go to the door. Until Bill stoops in front of me. “You ain’t going outta this door without an escort”, he says tapping my nose.

I roll my eyes smiling and wait for Joe to come. I gently wave at everyone and let Joe lead me out. Once we are out we start softly talking. With Joe it was easy, he was comfortable with silence, and he never saw the need to judge or lie.

“You miss home yet?”, he asks while lighting a cigarette. I start thinking. Do I miss home? What is home? Me and Richard lived in a barn house in Lancaster. Desperately trying to gather money for our own lot. Do I miss it? Yes I do. In the end there was nothing better than sinking next to Richard after a long day, cuddling up to him in the chilly bedroom. It was not a fancy dream, but it was the nest me and Richard have started with, and that was enough.

“I do, sometimes it’s just better to not think of it”, I answer. He nods in agreement. “You miss your husband? You seem so invested in Faye and Skip, it’s odd that you never talk about your own sweetheart”, he says blowing out the smoke.

I gulp and wring my hands together. He seems to notice my nervous reaction and furrows his brows. “You ain’t gotta talk about it if you don’t want to”, he then adds. “But if he hurt you, he’s never walking again”

My cheeks hurt as I smile at him. After the Sobel incident weeks ago, he really had become a dear friend to me. He just needed to see that I was worth the effort. And I sure am happy that I was to him.

“It’s not like that Joe, it really isn’t. He just..he is in the army too”, I tell him soothingly. His brows lift and he nods. Then he says something that makes me freeze:

“Yeah the LT seems like a proper fella”

My eyes bulge out of my head as I halt my step. “What?!”, I ask sharply. He just shakes his head and smirks. “You look at Winters like a lost puppy and he looks at you like a protective bear with it’s cubs. At first I thought it was nothing, but then I saw him help you with your gear and those looks ain’t just your regular ‘well thank you sir’”

I shake my head and my hands tremble. “Joe you can’t tell anyone, does anyone else know? Oh no they are going to see me as a hussy”, I almost start pulling my hair. It feels like a carpet has been just pulled from under my feet. All my achievements would mean nothing to the men from now on.

“Hey, hey, Sonja! SONJA!”, Joe raises his voice making me halt. “No one has said a word about you two. I just happened to notice. What you told me made me guess. You two are so professional it’s hard to even tell if he likes you or not”, he soothes rubbing my upper arms. I bite my lip and look at the ground.

“You are such a proper girl, not one of us would call you a hussy. You ain’t like that, Winters isn’t like that”, he continues. I look at him in the eye and only see kindness. Kindness and honesty in those button eyes. I nod and take one hand that’s on my shoulder. “thank you”, I whisper.

For the rest of the walk we just walk while he sings softly. Once we come to my barrack he takes my hand again. “You can trust me Sonja, Joe’s cotcha”, he smiles and then takes off. I smile softly too. He and Skip just might be the only friends I’ve ever truly had.

The maneuvers with Sobel have been getting worse and worse. He is jumpy, he is unprofessional and most sadly: he does not know how to work theory in practice.

Nix also got moved to the battalion staff. He was now packing the rest of his stuff. It felt odd, I had come used to spending time with the man. He was very odd company, but the more you get used to him, the more pleasant you see him.

“What are you gonna do?”, Lewis asks as we discuss Sobel’s field work. I know it is very unprofessional of me, but my eyes almost become stars when I look at my husband in his Ike jacket. I shake my head and grin at the thought.

“Nothing, just keep training the men”, Richard answers, just as a short fellow hops in. I quickly stand up too.

“Am I interrupting?”, the man asks. As me and Nix look at each other. Richard answers for us as he rises up: “No, no. Lt. Lewis Nixon, Nurse Sonja Winters, Lt. Harry Welsh just in from the 82nd”, he introduces. I smile at Harry kindly and shake his hand. “Ahh the beautiful lady wife”, He grins with his tooth gap.

I smile too, all the officers know the setting.It was easier that way and when things got serious, it was very practical. “Beautiful wife for a beautiful man”, I say knowing it would make my husband flush.

Harry chuckles and moves to shake hands with Lew. “Congratulations on the promotion”

“Ah, thanks. If you wanna call it that. You’ll learn them pretty quickly. She’s holy Mary, biblical little lady with a husband to match: No flaws, no vices, no sense of humor”, Lewis manages to hint. I glare at him and he just looks at me with a million dollar smile.

“Just like your chums up at Battalion Staff?”, Richard quips. I grin at him and go to gently brush his jacket straight. Which it already was, but better be as neat as possible. While I do that Dick turns his head to Harry: “What’s up?”

“I’m hearing a lot of rumblings”, you can hear the concern in Harry’s voice. Lew catches on quickly: “Sobel? We were just talking about that”

“So he gets a little jumpy in the field?”, Harry confirms as I turn back to him and Lewis. “He gets jumpy and you get killed”, Lewis nods. I look at him with raised brows and a dry expression. “What?”, he asks.

“Aren’t you just tactful”, I say pointedly. He chuckles: “haha, sorry Dick, I’ve rubbed up on her.” I roll my eyes, in his eyes you could see the pride of being bad influence. And I am in deep shame that I’m not immune to it.

Richard just continues with the topic of Sobel. “Listen, if we discuss it, it should be among ourselves”, he says looking at all of us very pointedly. We all quickly agree, and then the devil himself jumps in.

We are moving out.

A Comprehensive List of Stan and Kyle Moments (I UPD8 AS I GO)

Hello. Yes, you heard me. Here are all the scenes that legit scream out “STYLE” in South Park, whether these scenes are too far of a reach or not. I mostly compiled this out of my very own convenience, and hopefully this’ll help you a whole lot too. This is extremely text heavy, so I’ll put this under “Read More”. I haven’t played any of the games, so I won’t be including it here at this time, so if you guys know any good moments from the games, please let me know and I’ll add it to the list.

Cherokee Hair Tampons:

- The entire goshdarn episode.

- Stan being concerned and distraught over a dying Kyle breaks my heart. He was even bawling next to Kenny.

- Stan willing to donate his kidney to Kyle, even if it’d hurt a lot.

- Stan knowing that Kyle ate a bean and bacon soup half an hour ago shows that he’s been by Kyle’s side for quite some time now.

- Stan holding onto Kyle while they were at Cartman’s house.

title: a matter of time till the flowers bloom fandom: Secret Garden (2010) Korean Drama pairing: Kim Joo-Won/Gil Ra-Im notes: Because of all of the hype surrounding Hyun Bin lately it made me want to re-watch my favorite kdrama and I just had to write a fic for it even if it's not likely anyone will read it

summary: they meet thirteen years earlier than planned but nothing much has changed. Kim Joo-Won still finds himself smitten with Gil Ra-Im. the time may change, but that stays the same.

or the AU where Gil Ra-Im’s father had lived and he introduces Kim Joo-Won to his daughter like he promised.

When we get out of here, I’ll introduce you to my Ra-Im. She’s so pretty that you’ll faint.

It’s not hard for Joo-Won to request that the firefighter that saved him be treated in the same high-class hospital room as him without the latter knowing. After all, it’s the least he could do.

He’s still being treated for his ankle with Ahjussi – Gil Ik-seon, he later tells him – right beside him, when the hospital doors burst open and a high school girl with a tear streaked face, all but tackles the firefighter he owes his life to.

Ah, this must be the daughter he’s already heard so much about.

He should be more sensitive to her plight. After all, she was a turn of fate away from losing her father, and with that thought, Joo-Won is back in that moment looking at Mr. Gil Ik-seon in that cramped elevator and thinking he’d see someone die in front of him without being able to do anything about it.

But all that comes out of his mouth is –

“Ah, ah, what’s this Ahjussi? You said your daughter would be so pretty that I’d faint. All I can see is an ugly face that’s even uglier when it cries.”

He really doesn’t know why he’s insulting his savior’s daughter, only that he can’t stand to see her cry.

For what it’s worth, it works, because although there are still tear tracks on her face, she glares at him with so much fire in her eyes.

The machines in the hospital must be faulty because he’s suddenly finding it hard to breathe.

She comes by often – Gil Ra-Im, after her death stare her father had introduced them– a cheerful ‘Appa, I’m here!’ to her dad, and more glares for him.

He has too much respect for Mr. Gil Ik-seon but he can’t help wanting to rile up his daughter, and he doesn’t even know the reason why.

One day she comes by with home made food and out of the corner of his eye, he sees Secretary Kang bring in the high-class hospital food from near the doorway. He shooes the man away with his eyes when she’s not looking and whines about not having food.

“What, none for me? I’m a sick man you know. Shouldn’t you be feeding me?”

“Are you really too poor that you can’t even afford your own meals?” is her tart response.

“What?!” If only she knew who he was…”You can’t treat me that way. If only you knew who I was, later on you’d say ‘Oh I was actually in the same room as that guy!’, that’s what you’d say.”

“Now, now Ra-Im, let’s share some of our food. Don’t deprive me of the chance to boast about my daughter’s cooking!”

She’s disgruntled but follows her father’s orders. He pretends he can’t even lift his arms and opens up his mouth.

“Ahhh…”

“You’re crazy if you think I’ll feed you! Do you want your fifth vertebrae to become your sixth!?”

“What? You can’t be violent against a sick person.”

“Now, now, Ra-Im…”

She eventually does it, hand-feeding him, but it would have been better without that disgusted look on her face. Now, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Joo-Won has eaten from five star restaurants, dishes prepared with the finest ingredients and the most skilled of chefs, and yet this meal prepared by this ordinary girl, there’s no other word for it. It’s –

“Delicious.”

She looks skeptical at first, but he keeps his face serious, and then he’s rewarded with the most brilliant smile.

“Really? It’s really delicious?” She giggles for once looking like the high school girl she is, and with her sparkling eyes, he can finally see what Ahjussi meant.

For once in his twenty-one years of existence, he’s struck dumb.

He drives them both home personally – waving off Secretary Kang’s concerns that his ankle wasn’t well enough and that his mother would kill him for letting him drive in his condition, but that’s Secretary Kang’s problem, not his. He drives them both to a run-down place, the kind you see on the background of one of those National Geographic documentaries, and he thinks this isn’t right.

Shouldn’t someone have been by to compensate the Gil family already? He thinks, even a new house wouldn’t be enough.

They invite him in and though he doesn’t even know anyone personally who rents, he can’t find it in himself to say no.

He remedies it the next day, presenting new appliances – vacuum cleaner, washing machine, flat screen TV, the works – on their doorstep with a flourish. They’re all from grandfather’s department store so it wasn’t much.

By their astounded faces, he can tell he’s shocked them; yes this is who he really is – scion and future CEO of Loel Department Store – not some mooching patient.

Discreetly, he looks at Gil Ra-Im’s face, but his satisfaction is short-lived as her surprise turns to consternation.

Ahjussi speaks first. “Joo-Won…We appreciate the gesture, we really do, but I didn’t save your life so I could get all of this.”

He knows this, and he knows whatever he’s giving them doesn’t even compare.

Later on, even Ra-Im pulls him aside.

“For Appa, whether you’re some bigshot son of a wealthy family or even if you were some homeless man with tacky tastes in track suits (‘Listen you…!’), a life is a life that’s precious. And also he told me what happened. He said you saved him and that you wouldn’t let go. I should thank you for that. Kamsahamnida!”

She bows formally and Joo-Won is a confused mess of emotions. What is she acting all shy for now after hitting him constantly for his annoying comments in the hospital? It leaves him giddy seeing her act cute, but also apprehensive because it seems like they’re distant strangers.

Why must the Gil family be so hard to thank?

“Well if there’s one thing you could do for me. I was wanting to watch my daughter’s Taekwondo match. Would you want to come with me?”

If playing chauffeur is the only thanks they’ll accept, then Joo-Won will take what he can get.

Gil Ra-Im is a marvel of motion and deathly grace. She brings down men twice her size with ease. Sweat flows off her brow with every kick and strike.

Joo-Won can’t even blink. It looks like she’s sparkling. He is fascinated, enraptured, captivated.

“That’s my daughter,” says Ahjussi with pride.

She must be a health hazard and no one told him. Why else does she make it so hard for him to breathe? At this rate, he really will faint.

“Hey Ji-Hyun, what does it mean that I can’t take my eyes off of someone who could probably break every bone in my body? You know me I prefer the intellectual type. And what does it mean that I actually look forward to when she hits me?”

“Wow, we haven’t even broken up for more than four months and here you go talking about another girl in front of me.”

“You’re the one who dumped me.” Joo-Won points out helpfully.

‘It’s not as if you look that broken up about it’ Ji-Hyun thinks, but doesn’t say. “We’re better off as friends.”

“Anyway, if I thought you actually had the capacity for it, I’d think you were in love.”

Joo-Won snorts in disbelief.

He offers to drive her to her school since it’s on the way to his University. He opens the door and tells her to get in.

“Are you really crazy? What would people think if I was driven to school in a sports car. No thanks. I’ll ride the bus.”

“Most high school girls would go ‘kyaaa’ at this rare opportunity, You’d be the envy of everyone, having a handsome university student like me drive you to school. “

At that, she just rolls her eyes, leaves him gaping as she gets on the bus.

The one time she agrees because she was running late, she demands to drive, and again Joo-Won doesn’t know what compels him to entrust his precious car’s keys to her, but it’s one experience he never wants to relieve again.

Ever.

With the pretext of paying back his debt, he visits them often, Ahjussi and Gil Ra-Im

“I’m very exacting about these things.”

Ra-Im rarely accepts getting driven to places and forget about handing Ahjussi any money. Instead he pays for when they go out to eat rinds, much to his disgust.

“Don’t melt it. Chew it and swallow like a man.”

Funnily enough, it’s Gil Ra-Im who constantly says that while Ahjussi just laughs at him.

He wonders how many rind sessions it’ll be but they pay for the meals as many times as he does, not to mention he always has a place at their table whenever he drops by for dinner. At this rate, paying the debt is slow-going, but Joo-Won finds he doesn’t mind.

One night, he doesn’t realize how much time has passed and how many soju they’d consumed. Maybe it’s not his place to say but –

“Ahjussi, should Ra-Im really be drinking?”

Ra-Im scowls at him as expected but Ahjussi just laughs good-naturedly. “It’s medicinal, don’t worry.”

Joo-Won raises an eyebrow at that but lets it go, long ago accepting that he’ll never understand the workings of the Gil family.

It’s really late and he’s drunk, so Ahjussi doesn’t let him go home and offers him a place to sleep in their living room. Again, Joo-Won has only slept on silk sheets and down pillows imported from Europe, but he still accepts the offer.

“Wait for a bit, I’ll just bring Ra-Im to her room.”

“Don’t worry Ahjussi, let me do it.” Joo-Won picks her up easily, and for all of her tough talk, she weighs as light as a feather. He places her on her bed and places her stuffed toys near her. If he’s staring at her for a bit too long, well that’s just because he’s drunk. There’s a furrow in her eyebrow that makes his own furrow so he eases it away with his finger until her face rests peacefully again.

A soft smile touches his own features though he doesn’t notice it.

“Sweet dreams, Ra-Im.”

Joo-won’s body is in a jacuzzi pool in Deoksan but his mind is in a run-down apartment in Seoul. In his mouth is the taste of caviar, but he can’t help but wish for the taste of home-made tteokbokki. Physically he is present, laughing while being surrounded by pretty girls near his ideal sizes, but in his mind he can’t help but criticize.

Her skin is too smooth and fair. A bit darker would be nice.

Her hair is too long, a bob cut would be more chic.

Her legs are too thin. It’d be better if she had more muscle.

One of the said pretty girls caresses his arm. “Isn’t this fun, Joo-Won?” Her eyes don’t sparkle.

Joo-Won thinks of arguing over rinds, watching some late night drama, a hand on his shoulder and a curt but sweet voice, as they both tell him to take care in going home and drive safely.

The girl is waiting for a response. He smiles blankly. “Yeah, it’s fun.”

Choi Woo-young has been a thorn at his side at worst and an annoying Hyung at best. But never before has he had this visceral feeling of wanting to bury him where he could never be found. Until now.

“A fan you say? Why, my dongsae should’ve have introduced us sooner so I would’ve found out I had such a charming fan!”

“Never on your life,” mutters Joo-Won under his breath.

In the first place, they only found themselves in this situation because Woo-young was following him.

“I was only worried about you!”

“You’ll be hearing from my lawyer.”

He never wanted for them to meet anyway, but to make matters worse Gil Ra-Im is apparently a fan of ‘Oska’.

This is the first time he’s seen her this way. Ra-Im has stars in her eyes and is honestly twirling her hair and popping her foot like in a classic Hollywood movie. It’s sickening. If there’s anyone who should see her like that, it should only be him.

“Can I call you Oppa?”

“Of course!”

“Hyung, if you don’t leave in three seconds, I’ll leak to the media outlets some very interesting photos I have. An artist just beginning his music career wouldn’t want that kind of scandal right?”

“You’re a demon.”

“2 seconds.”

After he’s finally, finally, left, Joo-Won doesn’t waste time. He whirls on Ra-Im, face livid.

“Oppa?! I should be the one. You should be calling me, Joo-Won Oppa!” He knows he sounds childish, but he doesn’t care.

“Never.” She has the gall to stick out her tongue at him. No, no way. She had no right to act this cute after what she just pulled.

Later after Choi Woo-young gets to know Ra-Im better - much to Joo-Won’s frustration- he pulls him aside to talk to him.

For once Joo-Won actually listens because his Hyung never sounds this serious.

“I wasn’t joking when I said I was worried. Your friends say you haven’t been around much lately. What kind of healthy twenty-one year old doesn’t go to parties? You should be having the best time of your life. Is it the accident? Are there still some side-effects?”

Joo-Won waves off his Hyung’s concerns. “I’m fine. There’s no need to make a fuss.”

“Well it looks like it. You seem happier and more, I don’t know if peaceful is the word. So, where have you been lately?”

“You know that fireman who saved me? The girl you met, Gil Ra-Im, that’s his daughter. I’ve just been visiting them.”

“So I’ve heard. Whenever we meet, Miss Ra-Im is always complaining about you sticking around. She’s said it’s like they’ve adopted a stray dog or something.” He laughs boisterously. What Woo-young doesn’t tell Joo-Won though is how Miss Ra-Im looked when she said it, contented, with a secret smile on her face. His Dongsae’s head doesn’t need to get bigger than it is.

Predictably, Joo-Won fumes, “That brat…!”

“So does that mean you? And her?” Woo-young leaves it open-ended, free for Joo-Won to interpret however he sees fit.

“What are you talking about Hyung?” He laughs, but it only sounds fake to Woo-young’s ears. “I’m just playing around with her.”

“I’ll tell on you!” He can’t believe what he’s hearing.

“Go ahead. It won’t make a difference to her.”

For all that this is nothing new for Joo-Won, careless as he is with other people’s feelings, Woo-young wouldn’t be so worried if this was a ‘playing around’ that he recognized.

When Joo-Won played around, it involved candle lit dinners and expensive dates. Woo-young doesn’t recognize this playing around that involves him visiting a girl and her father, and having meals with them. Woo-young sincerely wonders if Joo-Won even recognizes the painful domesticity of it.

As a Hyung, he can’t help but worry.

Ahjussi texts him to ask for a favor, probably the only one he has ever asked of him.

Ah-young is out on a trip so could he stay with Ra-Im for tonight since it looks like he’ll be late in coming home. (He’s met Ah-young, Ra-Im’s best friend once before. She exclaimed ‘omo, omo’ and shook Ra-Im’s shoulder excitedly when they’d met. That is how girls react when meeting him. Ra-Im is just a strange and fascinating anomaly.)

He was expecting a scowl to greet him when she opened the door. He’d actually revel in it. Instead what he gets is a split second where her face falls when she realizes it isn’t her dad at the door. That hurt more.

She tries to keep herself together, pretending everything is normal, throwing insults his way, and yet preparing his meal for him. But Joo-Won can see right through her. He’ll take angry Ra-Im, annoyed Ra-Im, a fawning Ra-Im any day over this withdrawn and scared girl. It reminds him of when they first met.

He plays along with the motions. He says something that makes her throw a punch, an insult no doubt, but he misses his cue, because instead of avoiding it, as he would’ve done, he catches it, and pulls her in for a tight hug.

She struggles, though even that is weak.

“I understand that you’re worried.” He whispers it on her hair, and hugs her tighter. She stops trying to escape. “I’m worried too. But I’m here. You’re not alone. We’ll wait for him together.”

How can he explain to her? That moment that he saw in her father’s eyes that he was willing to let go because he would be dragging Joo-Won down with him. It was just a flip of a chance, but there could’ve been a world where Ra-Im was without a father and it’d all be his fault. So though he doesn’t understand this obnoxious, infuriating, astounding, precious girl half the time, he can confidently say, he understands what she’s going through right at this moment.

Miracle of miracles, she hugs him back, tight as he is hugging her.

It slips out.

“I love you with all my heart.”

She stills.

“Your father wanted me to pass his words on to you.”

And relaxes.

Meanwhile, Joo-Won is the opposite. Because those may have been her father’s words, but the emotion behind it is all his.

They don’t eat dinner yet. Knees drawn, her fisted hand enclosed in his, and his thumb running soothing circles over it, they wait together.

They wait together, and pray for rain.

Would your father have liked me?

Definitely not. What kind of father would like a guy who always looks down on his daughter and makes her cry.

Gil Ik-seon likes Kim Joo-Won. The boy has good intentions even if he goes the wrong way about it. He’s insistent on thanking him and standing by his principles no matter what those principles may be.

But more importantly, he likes Kim Joo-Won because he loves Ra-Im. The most precious thing in the world to Gil Ik-seon is his daughter. And because Ra-Im is the most precious to him, he likes Kim Joo-Won.

For all of Ra-Im’s scathing words against him, Kim Joo-Won makes it so her sad eyes aren’t so sad anymore, even if as a result they become angry instead.

But often she’ll also ask, “Is moron coming by over today Appa? I need to know if I need to make extra servings.” She says it as if it was too troublesome to do so, but he still catches her small smile whenever Joo-Won drops by.

So Gil Ik-Seon likes Kim Jo-Woon, and he’s sure Ra-Im likes him too.

The Story

Jack Kelly is an orphan. He has been ever since he was a baby.

He grows up in foster homes all over the place, mostly Harlem and Brooklyn until he is settled in Manhattan with an uptight couple and their snotty son want nothing more than to look like saints to the rest of the world. That, and after the systems finds out that the wife is actually Jack’s estranged aunt, he’s stuck there. (Don’t have the Dursleys down yet. Any ideas?)

Jack’s aunt basically disowned her sister after finding out that she was a witch.

Anyways

Jack is stuck there from the age of six and made somewhat of a servant in the household. His room is the broom closet beneath the stairs and he gets locked in at night, only to have his cousin wake him up by jumping up and down on the stairs over and over again.

From a young age, Jack is well aware of the fact that he is different. Odd things have always happened to him. Like magic.

But he never believed in magic. At least, the last time he’d said he had his aunt had slapped him across the face. So he kept quiet about the idea until nearly his eleventh birthday.

He gets a letter. One his uncle won’t let him read.

Upset by this, but unable to argue in fear of being locked back in the closet or starved, Jack lets it go. Until another letter comes.

Letters come everyday at a constant and Jack’s uncle makes a point to throw them away or burn them and never let Jack read it. Not even after a flock of owls come to deliver his hundreds of the same letters.

Eventually, after running them away from home to avoid the letters. and camping out somewhere far away, a mysterious man comes to see Jack on his birthday.

The man, Teddy, is large and odd and Jack is frightened of him at first, before Teddy explains to him what’s going on. Jack is a wizard. And it’s time to start wizard school at Hogwarts.

Ecstatic at the very idea, Jack rushes to go immediately, but is grabbed by his uncle and pulled back, told he is forbidden to go. So Teddy casts a spell on the other man, giving him features of a pig, before taking Jack and leading him away

Teddy tells him about his parents James and Lucille Kelly. He tells him about how Jack himself is a legend in the wizard world and once they make it to diagon alley everyone would immediately recognize Jack because of the lightning bolt scar he’d had on his chin ever since he was little. (Yes it’s on his chin, on the right, i think. Deal with it)

Teddy would get him everything he needs with the money that Jack’s parents left behind (also... do they ever explain how on earth Harry’s parents had so much money. I’m not quite a Harry Potter nerd. Not yet. But... how?)

Jack would get his wand (yes with a Phoenix feather core) he’d get his animal. A snow owl. Hedwig. It’s still Hedwig. She adores Jack.

When it’s time for Jack to finally head off to school, he’s left alone in the train station with his ticket that has station 9 and 3/4 written on it. He can’t find it, and after asking for help, he’s shoved aside only to fall into another boy with a large family in front of him and a mother who immediately tells him to get up and hurry along.

The boy introduces himself as Race and asks Jack where he’s headed. Jack tells him the truth and Race’s face lights up.

Race is the youngest of seven kids. Yes, it’s the Pulitzer family. Yes, Pulitzer is a good guy in this. Yes, Katherine is still older than Race.

Race is just so excited to have met someone his age before getting on the train. He does not want to spend the entire ride with four of his big brothers and his big sister all alone with them trying to frighten him about starting a new school

Race asks his mother if they can show Jack how to get to the train and Emmaline Pulitzer would tell Jack not to worry, that it was Anthony’s first time too. And Race would get mad at her for telling Jack his real name.

Jack and Race would be friends immediately. Even after Mike and Ike ask Jack a whole bunch of questions and do their best to embarrass their little brother.

Jack buys Race and him candy when the cart comes around and Race turns down anything even though it’s so clear that he wants some. Jack recognizes a poor kid as a poor kid himself. So he buys them a bunch of candy.

Eventually, another boy joins them in the train. A Charlie Morris. An intelligent, quick witted know it all who Race immediately clashes with but who Jack takes a liking to.

The three of them are rarely ever apart after that meeting, especially when they all realize that they have all been misfits their entire lives. Jack because he’s an orphan, Race because he’s poor and the youngest of seven kids (six brothers), and Charlie because of his bum leg.

Though Jack is immediately popular at hogwarts, he still has that feeling of not belonging and clings to his two friends all though his journey at this school

The Pulitzer family is know for being the large, poor family who have sent their kids to hogwarts for years. Joseph Pulitzer used to be extremely wealthy and was known for doing whatever needed to be done to keep it that way until he met Emmaline and she eventually told him she was pregnant. He used to be on Snyder’s side, but left for the sake of his family who he loves more than life (he is especially close with his only daughter)

He lost most of his money when Snyder came back around to get revenge on him for leaving and telling others about plans he had or any information that could potentially lead anyone to finding him. When this happened, it was close to the same time Snyder had killed James and Lucille Kelly. Snyder goes after Pulitzer, planning to kill him, threatening Pulitzer’s whole family, including his youngest son who wasn’t even one at the time, that he’d managed to pick up and almost take away.

The very idea of that happening haunts Race to this day

Race used to have nightmares about it, not fully remembering the situation since he was so little, but being told about it by one of his big brothers one day.

Race would run to Pulitzer almost every night after that, complaining and sobbing about a nightmare.

During that encounter, Pulitzer gave Snyder everything he had to protect Race before Emmaline managed to take her baby away from the evil wizard and Race believes he is the reason that his family is now poor

(If that all makes sense)

Charlie is a muggle-born wizard. He was born with one bum leg that he eventually fixes for himself after a lot of studying. But that doesn’t happen until nearly graduation, after several others offer to help. He always refuses. He wants the satisfaction of doing it himself

He has two very loving parents who did their best to spoil him rotten as a child and were so excited to find out that their little boy was magic.

They are so supportive of everything he does and they make a point to tell him how much they love him.

Admin Ummie Words - 3k Characters - You, Jae (Day6) Genre - Fluff/ Soulmate AU (slightly) Warning - a little cursing and drinking

I honestly think this fanfic sucks but hopefully you guys don’t think so lol. The Soulmate idea I had is where all of your problems go away when you’re with your soulmate.. corny ik

You finally leave work which feels like you’ve been there for 5 years. You didn’t sleep well the night before because they had you work late. But luckily, you’re working at a café which means you can sip all of the coffee you want.

You walk out of work with a small cup of hazel nut coffee, you take small sips letting the warmth of the coffee make your whole body slightly hot. The steam from your coffee hits your glasses and makes them get a little foggy. You stand outside of your job while the wind hits you and makes the hair from your ponytail slightly hit your face. But the fall wind makes hits your face making you scrunch your eyes. You look down the street and see your best friend Katie run up to you yelling.

“Y/N! You have to come with me! My favorite band is playing and I don’t want to go alone”

You’ve known Katie for 4 years and she’s always excited and kind of loud. Her happiness makes you happy and her smile is contagious. She’s one of the most positive people you’ve met. You two moved in together about 2 months ago and it’s been great so far. You look at her and smile still taking a few small sips of coffee.

“Katie. Please stop yelling, I just got out of work and what band?”

“oh sorry!” She takes a few breaths and continues talking “I told you about them like a thousand times. Day6 remember?”

You look at her and remember how many times she talked about that group, a local band that she loves. They don’t play shows often but she always talks about the bass player.

“I remember, when are they playing?”

“Tonight at 6! Please come with me!” She looks at you with puppy dog eyes and sticks out her bottom lip. You look at her and roll your eyes and say “Fine, it’s really last minute but I’ll go”

-You arrive back at your apartment -

You throw on a warm outfit and put a few curls in your hair. You don’t put a lot of makeup on and you throw a pair of black heel boots on as well.

“Y/N... Are you ready?” You roll your eyes and yell back “Um... Yeah. Just need my bag.” Katie gets excited and brings you to the venue. You get inside and instantly look over at the bar and think about how good some vodka or wine would sound right about now

“Katie, I’m getting a drink. I’ll be right back” You walk over to the bar and yell to the bartender, “Can I have a watermelon vodka?”

You sit down at the bar and see a guy with light blue hair and circle framed glasses. He has a long peach shirt and black ripped jeans. He looks over at you and smiles. Of course, you smile back. You look over at him again and see he’s looking at you so you move over to a seat closer to him. He looks surprised as his eyes get wide and his face gets a little pink.

“Hi, I’m Y/N. What are you doing here tonight?”

He looks flustered as he says “I’m Jae... I’m just with my friends. What about you?”

“My friend Katie dragged me here to see a band play so I just need a drink to deal with all of the people bumping into me”

The bartender hands you your drink and Jae say’s...

“I’ll pay for it”

“O-oh no, you don’t have to. It’s fine”

Jae hands the bartender the money and continues to talk

“Have you heard the band playing here before?” You take a sip of your drink and say “I’ve heard a few songs by them... Have you?”

He smirks and says “Yeah I’ve heard a few”

You see his friend run up to him “Jae we gotta go”

“oh, already? It was nice meeting you Y/N”

“it was nice meeting you too Jae”

Jae and his friend walk away and Katie runs up to you. “Y/N do you know who you just talked to?” You sip more of your drink and turn around to her and say “Yeah... a guy named Jae, he got me a drink. Seems like a nice guy, why?”

“He’s the lead guitarist in the group”

You look confused but you see Jae on stage with his friend and a few other people. You grab your drink and walk to the stage with Katie. Jae sees you and smiles lightly, his band member speaks up.

You look at him and smile a little bit while shaking your head.

“We’re going to play our song called ‘You were beautiful’ hope you all enjoy”

They start playing and you can’t help but move to the beat, you didn’t think Jae could sing like that. You didn’t think he’d be in the band at all. Now you see why Katie always talked about them. You and Katie dance together which makes Jae smile a little bit.

-After the show-

Jae walks over to you with a smile on his face saying “Did you like the set?” You chuckle and say “Yeah, you were amazing. I didn’t know you could sing like that.”

“haha I guess I'm alright”

As you talk you look over and see Katie talking to the bass player that she whined about earlier. She runs over to you and you look at Jae

“Um Jae, I’ll be right back”

He nods and Katie whispers to you

“Y/N I’m going to a party with the group... are you coming?”

Your eyes widen as you look at her “Probably not”

The bass player walks over to you both and asks Katie if she’s ready. She leaves and you stand there feeling way more uncomfortable than you did before. She knows you hate being alone in places with a lot of people especially people you don’t know. You feel alone and like you can’t breathe. You try to force a smile and pull yourself together.

Jae walks back to you and taps your shoulder

“Hey, I forgot to ask but I wanted to know if you wanna come to a party the band is having. It’ll be fun”

“Sure... that sounds cool”

He grabs his guitar and walks back to you, putting his hand lightly on your waist which makes you almost jump but you calm down quickly. It feels nice being with him but it’s also a little scary. As you reach his car you freeze because you haven’t been in a car with a stranger before and you obviously don’t want to be killed.

“Are you okay Y/N?”

“U-um yeah... I just haven’t been in a car with a stranger before”

“Ah well I promise I won’t hurt you”

You give him a small smile, weirdly enough you decide to believe him as he opens the car door for you and puts his guitar in the back seat. You put your seatbelt on and hold on close to the car door. He gets in, puts his seatbelt on and starts the car but you’re watching everything he does. He notices you looking nervous and decides to play some music hoping it will calm you down.

As he drives, he looks at you to make sure you’re okay. He tries to give small talk in order to make you comfortable.

“Um... Jae, I’m sorry I’m being so quiet”

“No need to apologize. I totally understand, being in a car with a stranger is scary”

Hearing him say that made you feel a little better. For some odd reason... you trusted him even though that sounds incredibly stupid. You believed he wouldn’t do anything to hurt you.

-About 10 minutes later you arrive -

“Oh, we’re here” Jae stops the car and unbuckles his seatbelt. You do the same and wait for him to get his guitar before going inside even though there are a lot of people outside anyways. As you step inside of his house you see tons of people from the show and some people that you don't know. You see Katie with the bass player again. Jae notices that you look upset and asks "What’s wrong?"

"huh? oh nothing..."

Except you were upset at the fact that Katie left you for some guy that she didn't even know. You kind of felt betrayed. You wanted to just go up to her and slap her but you didn’t.

Jae leans in close to you and whispers to you

"We call him YoungK or Brian. You think he's handsome?" You look at Jae then look back at his friend “not my type" You say that while tapping his shoulder a little bit, Jae's face gets pink as he smiles

Katie looks over and sees you talking to Jae and she runs over to you "Um excuse me can I borrow her real quick?" You look at Jae and say "I'll be right back... okay?" Jae nods to you and you walk with Katie to the porch for a minute.

- Porch -

"What?"

"I just wanted to check on you and see if you're okay"

"Katie... you left me at a concert with people I didn't fucking know. I got in a car with a stranger, thankfully he didn't fucking kill me and you know how I am in places with a lot of people when I’m alone. You left me for some guy you didn’t know... but I’m okay”

Katie looks down then looks back up and looks upset

“I’m sorry... I know I fucked up, I just like him a lot. I know that was horrible of me to do”

“just don’t do it again. I was terrified in the car with him. But he seems nice”

Katie smiles widely

“He’s really sweet... Jae seems nice too”

You chuckle and say “He is”

“I’ll come find you when I’m ready to leave, okay?”

“sure”

You two hug and walk back into the house. Katie walks back to YoungK and you walk back to Jae. Jae sees you and smiles.

“Hey, everything okay?”

“Yeah, everything’s good now. Just a small argument”

Jae grabs your hand and you both squeeze through the crowd of people. He brings you upstairs as you look confused wondering where he’s bringing you. He brings you to his room and you look around.

“Why’d you bring me up here?”

Jae turns around and smiles quickly as he reaches in his drawer for a bag of candy and gets two drinks from his mini fridge

“It’s too loud downstairs... it’s almost impossible to even talk to you”

“Fair enough”

He hands you the bag of candy and drinks and sits down on his bed “You can sit down”

You slowly walk to his bed and sit down beside him making sure to keep some space in between you two. You turn your head to look at him but quickly turn to look away again.

“How long have you been a group?”

“Since 2015. The rest of the group wants to tour, but I’m more interested in just playing here for now”

“Makes sense. It could be really overwhelming”

You two sit there for about 2 hours talking about nothing. Jae offers to bring you home since Katie messaged you saying someone else is bringing her.

As you reach outside of your apartment, you sit in the car for a few minutes longer.

“Thank you for bringing me home”

“no problem. I had fun hanging out with you tonight”

“I did too...” Jae looks down and you can tell that he wants to tell you something. He speaks up and says “Can I have your number? So, we can make plans to hangout again...”

You chuckle and put your number in is phone

“text me when you get back home”

“I will... can I walk you to the door? I know I probably shouldn’t be asking haha.” The fact that he seems more nervous than you are makes you really happy. You find it extremely cute. You both get out of the car and walk to your door. He stands there with his hands in his pockets.

“thank you for walking me to the door. That was actually really sweet”

“You’re welcome.” You stand there together for a moment and look at each other. You want him to kiss you and weirdly enough you think it’s about to happen as he leans in. You nervously close your eyes and try to prepare yourself. You feel his arms wrap around you and you open your eyes and they begin to flutter. You have a confused look on your face.

“Thanks again for bringing me home Jae”

“No problem, I’ll text you when I get back home” You nod as you watch him get into his car and drive off. You turn around and go to Katies room to talk to her. “Katie?”

“COME IN” You walk in and sit on her bed covering your face asking “Am I stupid?”

“huh? No! Why?” You look down with your head in your hands and say “I thought Jae was going to kiss me, he leaned in and made it seem like it was going to happen. Or I could’ve just been overanalyzing the entire situation. A hug is better than nothing... right?”

Katie scoots closer to you “What happened?” You pick your head up and say “I was outside with Jae since he brought me back and I totally thought he was going to kiss me”

“but he didn’t?”

You say “no” and look down and pucker your lips while scrunching up your nose. Katie puts her hand on your shoulder and says “Y/N... I was talking to YoungK and he told me that Jae gets nervous a lot. Especially if he’s interested in someone, he doesn’t like to rush things. So be patient.”

“okay, thanks. Wait... why were you guys talking about us?”

Katie chuckles as she says “He asked me if I knew anything about the two of you so I wanted to ask what kind of person he was. Didn’t want you to talk to a fuck boy”

“haha thank you”

As you two talk you feel your phone vibrate and you look at it. You see a number with no name, the text says “Hey Y/N, I’m home. Thanks for hanging out with me tonight.” You look at it and smile. Katie leans over to peak at the phone and she smiles too.

You pretty much end up talking to Jae for the rest of the night. He asks you to hangout on Friday and you sit there holding the phone to your chest trying to decide what you wanted to do. “Yes”. Pretty much meaning you’ll barely sleep for the week because you’re going to be busy worrying about when you’ll see him again. On Friday you get up early because you two originally planned to get coffee. You get dressed and wait downstairs for him to show up. Katie comes downstairs and sees you sitting there.

“Y/N... what the fuck are you doing? It’s 9 in the morning”

“Good Morning to you too. I’m getting coffee with Jae. He’s coming to get me”

Katie smiles and says “Really? Aw that’s cute. Have fun okay? Don’t overthink things... and don’t freak out. Do you have your medicine?”

“Okay and yes. I have it with me” You hear the doorbell ring and you look back at Katie “I’ll text you.” You walk out and Jae looks at you with a big smile on your face “Good Morning Y/N” You smile and say “Good Morning”

He hugs you tight and you feel okay enough to not let him go. He holds your hand and walks you to the car, opens your door and closes it for you. He gets inside and asks “How did you sleep?”

You look at him and say “I didn’t sleep that well actually so I’m glad we’re getting coffee. How did you sleep?”

He says “I didn’t sleep that well either... I was too nervous about seeing you today”

“aw really?” Hearing him say that makes your face hot and you smile to yourself trying not to let him see. “Yeah... there’s something about you that makes me really happy”

-You get to the café and he has you sit down-

“What do you want?”

You sit there for a second and think “Um... French Vanilla swirl with 3 sugars and creamer”

“Gotcha”

-As he walks to the counter and pays for the drinks you look at him and smile. You look in your bag and see Katie message you “Stay Positive <3”. You put your phone back and look at your pills. You put your bag back down. A few minutes later Jae walks back with the coffee-

“Thank you!” You take your coffee and sniff it letting the warmth of it hit your nose. Jae chuckles and says “You’re welcome... You look really pretty today” You look up at him slightly embarrassed and say “Really? Thank you. I didn’t get to put a lot of makeup on”

Jae looks at his coffee and says “you don’t need makeup” Those four words make butterflies fly around your stomach like crazy. Just four words and you feel like you can melt. He can just look at you and you feel like you’ll just give in to him.

“Thank you. Um did Brian say anything about Katie?”

“I actually think he likes her... he won’t stop talking about her. Katie this Katie that. He drives me crazy”

“haha I think she likes him too. She said she had fun with him last night” You pull up enough courage and ask “Is this a date?”

Jae stops sipping his iced Americano and looks down “I would like it to be.” You look at him and say “then I guess it’s a date.” Even though you asked, you got nervous, just the word ‘date’ made you nervous. You didn’t want to mess it up. You start to twirl your fingers under the table. Jae looks at you and smiles while saying “Don’t be nervous.” He takes your hand and holds it.

You look back at him and smile shyly. Jae takes a bite of the cake you both ordered and then says “I wanna take you somewhere” You look at him with a confused look and ask “now?” He chuckles and says “yeah.” You get in the car and he drives, you look out of the window and try to see where he’s taking you.

30 minutes later you get to a place that’s kind of like a mountain. You look around and see all of the trees and leaves changing color, hearing the leaves rustle as the wind hits them. The wind touches your cheeks which sends a chill through your body. You see all around New York which makes you smile, normally you would be terrified but being with Jae makes you not scared. You feel safe.

Jae walks over to you and places his hand on your waist and asks “do you like it?” You can’t stop looking around and say “I love it. It’s so pretty.” You look at Jae and see he’s already looking at you but he looks away quickly before you can say anything.

“Oh Y/N are you cold?” You keep looking at the view and ask “huh? Oh, a little bit”

Jae takes off his Jacket and holds it open for you to put your arms in. You can’t stop smiling because of how sweet he is. You put it on and say “Wait but now you’ll be cold”

“nah, I have another jacket in the car”

“Jae... normally I’d feel nervous being here. Being this high up and seeing everything like a giant would and possibly imagining the worst thing could happen but being with you makes it hard for me to be scared”

Jae takes your hand and squeezes it “That’s how I feel about you too. When I’m with you I feel like I’m always happy.” Jae stands right in front of you and cups your cheeks and leans in to kiss you as the wind is blowing. You don’t feel cold, you feel warm. His lips pressing against yours makes your entire body feel warm. When he stops kissing you, you lightly bite your bottom lip and he kisses your forehead.

He holds your hand as you look at the view “You know how they say all of your problems will be gone when you find who you’re supposed to be with?” You look at him and say “yeah, I hear everyone talk about that”

He looks straight ahead while asking “what if you’re the one I’m supposed to be with?” You look at him and see his hair moving from the wind, you see his eyelashes curling around each other and the light pink tint the wind make on his cheeks. You see how his jawline is shaped and the way his hair goes slightly into his eyes. You see the way his few pieces of facial hair are growing in. You look at him and smile to yourself and say “Then you’d have to be my boyfriend.”

Detective Genius: Part 1 of 8

Chapter One: The Justice-Selling Nurse and the Case of the Knocked Out Neighbor

Synopsis: Yoon is a financially struggling nurse and recognizes a trauma victim, Taejun, as someone from his boarding house. The victim’s brother, Kyoga, suspects foul play and offers Yoon money to figure out who caused this. The landlord, Soo-won, discourages Yoon from getting involved, but in order to support himself and his adoptive father Ik-soo, Yoon investigates the suspicious other residents--and then some. Genre: Modern Day AU, (Attempted!?) Murder Mystery in Classic ‘Who Done It?’ Style, General. Could be read as comedy, drama, or melodrama. Words: 2,416 Warnings: I don’t kill anyone, but I do make them suffer a little (sorry, Taejun, somebody had to be the victim). Probably nothing that would make people squeamish, as the focus is on the plot. Find the other chapters in the master post.

When I saw his face, I didn’t recognize him. He was just another trauma victim, one of many I had already seen in my twelve-hour shift that drizzly Saturday. The one thing I paid attention to was the gash on the back of his head. Blunt force of sort, but the sort did not matter. Not at that moment, anyway.

He was out of my hands as fast as he had come in, and I went back to my other patients. An hour later, at 8:18pm, I walked into his room to speak to his next-of-kin who had arrived. His brow was as knit as any other relative that walked through the hospital halls, and the wrinkles drew my attention to the mole on his forehead. He stood immediately and asked, “What happened to him?”

“Calm down. He’s had a hit to the head. Can I get your name, please?”

“Kan Kyoga,” he gulped back his outburst, “I’m Taejun’s older brother.”

The scratches of my pencil halted. Taejun… Kan Taejun?

I put down my clipboard and took a better look at his face. The bandage wrapped around his head and the drool hanging out his mouth was a new look for him, but this was indeed the face of the skeevy man I often passed on my way to and from home. Kyoga read the look on my face and asked, “Do you know him?”

“I live in the same building.”

“Then what happened to him!?”

“I wouldn’t know that! I haven’t been home all day. Whatever it was, it probably only happened within the past few hours.”

“Then who would have done it?”

I paused. Kyoga meant exactly what he had asked. Asking him if he had realized he suggested foul play would have given me a predictable answer, so I winced to express my doubt to him.

He pressed on. “Show me exactly where he was injured. It’s here, right?” he pointed to Taejun’s skull where it met the pillow.

“Yes. The right parietal bone.”

“It’s the top of his head, isn’t it?”

“Yes—”

I stopped. Taejun never struck me as the brightest or most graceful of people—far from it, in fact—but even he would have had to do something impressive to give himself an injury there. The only thing I could think of was that he had come in from the rain and slipped on the staircase, but no one ever used the stairs.

Kyoga could once again read my face. His eyes narrowed. “When the landlord called me, he said they found him in the alleyway.”

“I’m sorry, this isn’t my job,” I changed the subject before he could watch any other gears churn inside my head. “And my shift was supposed to end twenty minutes ago, so if you don’t mind—”

“Find out what happened!” he snatched my wrist, then fumbled to holding my hands instead. He gazed up, and his voice cracking like a door left ajar. “Please, I’m begging you.”

“You should ask the landlord if you—”

“He asked me to keep it low-key,” he frowned, his glance falling as well. “He’s already doing me a big favor by letting him stay there. My brother has a history of eviction. He’s not a bad kid, really!”

My eye twitched. Kid? The guy was in his 20’s and couldn’t keep a part-time job for more than a week at a time.

“Terribly irresponsible, but at least he’s… well… Anyway, it wouldn’t surprise me if someone had it out for him.”

“Listen, I don’t want to get involved. My only concern is that he doesn’t die on me.”

“Then don’t let him get killed!” he hissed. He let go of my hands to open his sleek leather wallet, and he slid out all the cash within, crisp as though he had just been to an ATM reserved for only those who had the privilege to see that many zeroes on a single bill. I had never seen, much less felt such waxy cash, which he stuff into my hands. “I want justice for my brother. Find out who did it, and I’ll triple that. No, I’ll quadruple it!”

My mouth felt dry as I tried to refuse. “I… I can’t.”

“Consider this a down-payment!”

“No—no, I really can’t!” I insisted, forcing the cash back to him. Oh, but I knew I could—I knew I could, and the thought of all those zeroes on all that other cash if I could prove it! My hands felt cold parting with even that much; if I had held it any longer I wouldn’t have been able to resist. “I’m sorry.”

“No,” he frowned. “It’s alright. Thank you for how much you’ve done for him already. Let me give you my number, call me if you can do anything else.”

It had stopped drizzling, but there were puddles everywhere and the dregs of laundry left hanging out the neighborhood buildings stank with moisture. I got home to the boarding house at 9:04. The hallway had a warm yellow glow, dim enough to hide the age of the little building, but the elevator was as sturdy as it likely always had been. I was about to hit the ‘up’ button when the doors opened, and other man who lived on the second floor—Taejun’s neighbor across the hall—stepped out in his sweats and headband. “Oh, hello there,” he said, “Yoon, right?”

“Yes. Mr. An, right?”

“Please, call me Joon-gi,” he gave me a squinty smile. “Nice that the rain finally let up, isn’t it? I hate to go running so late, but there’s been no other choice.”

I wasn’t one much for small-talk, but I couldn’t resist pointing out the obvious. “You could run up and down the stairs.”

“Please! They reek. I’ll take my chances with the muggers.”

Joon-gi nodded his head as he trotted off in expensive shoes and poor form, and I was left alone again the hallway. True, no one usually used the stairwell for anything, but why would it reek? Since Kyoga had planted the idea in my head that there had been an attempted murder outside the building, my first sarcastic but nagging thought was that there was a completed one to find inside. Not that I anticipated it, but I thought I’d feel better taking a look to be completely sure.

Going to the stairwell made me feel shifty, as though I was the suspicious one. There was no reason to feel that way--no one was there to see me. I checked over my shoulders anyway before pushing against the heavy door.

“Yes?”

“Ah!” I shrieked. My heart pounded as though a piece of it shot to every part of my body. An instant later I recognized the face in the stairwell, and the person attached to it. He was wearing a baggy t-shirt and shorts and flip-flops and had his untamed hair draped over one shoulder. I had caught him in the middle of mopping the stairs. It was my landlord, Soo-won.

“I was pretty startled too,” he smiled, though nothing made him seem spooked. “Do you take the stairs, Yoon? That’s pretty healthy of you.”

“Not usually. Do you usually mop them?”

“Sometimes, on a whim,” he cheerily went back to his work, humming some happy tune. I watched, and he stopped to look back at me. “What is it?”

“That’s the most suspicious sounding-thing I’ve ever heard.”

“Is it? I like cleaning sometimes, it builds character.”

“You know what happened to Taejun, right?”

Soo-won stopped his mopping and turned to face me. “Yes. There was some kind of accident and he had to go to the hospital. Did you see him there?”

“Yes, and his brother too.”

“Ah, Kyoga. And how is Taejun doing?”

“Stable, for all I could tell. It could have been a lot more serious, you know.”

“I know.”

“It is serious.”

“I’m glad he’s in good hands then.”

“You do realize it’s suspicious, don’t you?” I pressed him, but tried to control how far up my voice echoed. This building was notorious for carrying echoes. “Injuries like that out in an alleyway don’t just happen.”

“But it sure did, didn’t it? Kyoga probably asked you to investigate, didn’t he?”

“You know him?”

“Haha! He pays Taejun’s rent, of course I do. He already asked me to look into it.”

“And? Will you?”

“It was just an accident, I’m sure,” he went back to his all-too-cheery mopping. “It’s all fine as long as nobody gets hurt.”

“Somebody did get hurt. For all we know, it could be an attempted murder.”

“That’s all the more reason not to get involved.”

I felt so caught by Soowon’s deep green eyes that I almost didn’t noticed his smile had faded. “Yeah,” I pushed out in response, “I know that.”

“I know you know. You’re probably the smartest one in this whole building! I’ll bet you’re tired after a long day at the hospital. I’m not done here, so maybe you should take the elevator.”

I agreed and excused myself. The exchange left me with an eerie chill down my limbs, and I hoped I wouldn’t run into anyone else on the way up to the third floor.

I got my wish. The journey to my room was swift and uninterrupted, and the familiar clink and thunk of unlocking the door sounded sweet to my ears. After pushing it open, I was greeted by an even sweeter sound.

“Welcome home, Yoon!”

Ik-soo brimmed at me with glee, surrounded by a collection of little indoor plants in various glass and ceramic containers spread out on the floor, the table, and the windowsill.

“What’s all this?”

“Yuno gave them to me,” he answered.

“Huh. That was nice of her. Did she bring some herbs too?”

“Lots of dill,” he nodded, tossing his ratty blonde hair about. “How was your day?”

“Long,” I replied. Taejun’s case still weighed on my mind. “Were you home all day?”

“Yes, I was.”

“Did you hear anything weird earlier this evening?”

He paused. “You mean, did I hear the voices of the gods? Then yes, I did.”

My eye-roll felt involuntary, but this time I managed to keep myself from asking if the voices told him how to find a job. I wasn’t always good at keeping that comment to myself, and it would be the same every time. He would apologize for not being able to do anything, I would apologize for letting off steam, and we’d both regret the whole conversation later. “Then what’d they say this time?”

“They said Yuno will be very happy.”

“I’d say that’s obvious, but alright.”

“She was so happy to hear it though, Yoon! It made me so happy to tell her. That’s why she gave me all these nice flowers.”

“It was a fortune-telling gig, you mean?”

“Well, it’s not really fortune-telling, though she wanted to call it that. I really couldn’t, I only relay whatever the gods decide to tell me. It’s… heh… not much, really.”

I set my bag down with one loud jangle on the table. “Ik-soo, you can charge money for this. This is your one talent, you should use it.”

“I couldn’t accept her money! I couldn’t tell her anything more than that.”

“She offered you money?”

“I-I couldn’t take it! That’s why she gave me the plants. I couldn’t answer any of her other questions, I would have been making things up, and that’s not good.”

“The girl’s so loaded that she doesn’t even know what a real job is! We’re on a shoe-string budget as it is, the least you could do is give us another string to work with!”

“I would have been scamming her, Yoon!” he bit his lip and shrunk away from me, his voice beginning to crack. “I’m sorry I’m not like you. I would earn money if I could… I wish I could! I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. All I can do is try to take the high road in everything, and that usually doesn’t make any cash... sorry...”

We stood there in silence, save the squeak of his stifled sniffles and the hum of the light bulb. I couldn’t keep myself from regretting this conversation after all.

********* I couldn’t sleep, but that wasn’t anything unusual. I was used to it.

What I hated was that nagging echo in my head of all the conversations I had that evening. I couldn’t get very far from Ik-soo to let us cool down after our spat since we always spread out our mats next to each other on the floor of our room. The rooms in the boarding house were each meant for only one tenant each, but Soo-won gave us special permission to live there together so we could afford something on my income alone. He was a very lenient landlord, almost the point where you wondered if he could make a profit at all, as he was always the one to offer was discounted rates on the tight months before I would even ask, and he never even asked to see much proof. I couldn’t afford to get on his bad side, but I couldn’t afford much else either.

Being a nurse wasn’t the only way I could make money, and I knew it.

I sat up in bed and looked over at Ik-soo; his nose and fingertips poked out from over the blanket and he had a faint snore. Careful not to wake him, I got out of bed and grabbed my bag from the kitchenette and hid in the bathroom, where I turned on the light and searched my bag for the business card in the pocket. When I found it I checked again to make sure Ik-soo was asleep, and then I dialed.

“Hello, Kyoga? This is Yoon.”

We went over a few basic details, and Kyoga’s gratefulness practically dripped through the phone. After that I opened a page of my pocket notepad and drew a diagram of the boarding house, labeling all the rooms and locations.

Chapter Seven: The Justice-Selling Nurse and the Case of the Stinky Stairs

Synopsis: Yoon is a financially struggling nurse and recognizes a trauma victim, Taejun, as someone from his boarding house. The victim’s brother, Kyoga, suspects foul play and offers Yoon money to figure out who caused this. The landlord, Soo-won, discourages Yoon from getting involved, but in order to support himself and his adoptive father Ik-soo, Yoon investigates the suspicious other residents--and then some. Genre: Modern Day AU, (Attempted!?) Murder Mystery in Classic ‘Who Done It?’ Style, General. Could be read as comedy, drama, or melodrama. Words: 2,357 Warnings: I don’t kill anyone, but I do make them suffer a little (sorry, Taejun, somebody had to be the victim). Probably nothing that would make people squeamish, as the focus is on the plot. Find the other chapters in the master post.

I was momentarily stunned. Why would anyone punch Jaeha in the face? Was it Hak? Did Hak have a reason to keep Jaeha out of this?

Ik-soo looked over at me with a struggle but also a doubt about where I had disappeared to and said, “Sorry, Yoon, I was trying to tell him you need your rest and he should take him to the hospital instead…”

“Where is he?” I asked Kija, ready to get to work. We left Ik-soo behind and took the elevator up to the fifth floor, and because Kija had left the door unlocked, we wasted no time in getting in. His room was full of white furniture so basic that it seemed no one had ever taught him the meaning of decorating, so Jaeha’s sprawling form on his bed stuck out like a cactus in a barren dessert. His left cheek was swollen, and he was moaning and holding his stomach as he rolled this way and that. His eyes were glazed and unfocused, and he didn’t seem to notice when we came in.

I didn’t know where to start, and looked to Kija for answers.

He gulped and stared at the man on his bed. “I had a bad feeling about him and found him in the stairwell,” he said as I got to work assessing Jaeha’s vitals and helping myself to Kija’s miniature fridge to find something cold to put against his cheek. Kija went on, “His room was locked, so I carried him back up here.”

“You carried him?”

“Yes,” he said, changing tones as he caught me staring at him. “He said he heard something in the stairs and went to check it out, so that’s where I found him around the 4th floor. I went down the staircase first, but then when I couldn’t get in, I went back up here, and then back down to get your help.”

“You carried him by yourself, up the stairs?”

“Yes. Is that strange? Oh, I suppose it is, I should have used the elevator.”

“This isn’t making any sense, Kija. Back up and slow down.”

Jaeha howled with pain and clenched his stomach tighter. Kija took a breath and started over. “He came up here a couple hours ago to tell me about everything with Hak and Taejun. We talked for maybe an hour or so. He’s a pretty nice guy once you get to know him. Then when he said he was going back to his room, he said said he heard something and he wanted to check it out. He was already acting strange before that, though.”

“How so?”

He frowned as he pondered. “He was acting very loose and friendly with me.”

“Can you be any more specific?”

“Leaning against the wall like he couldn’t stand up straight, keeping his face very close to me. Touching my hair. Then he started shaking his head and moving away and laughing, and muttering something under his breath like his was confused, and then some sound caught his attention so he stopped, and then told me to go to bed while he looked for clues. I went back to my room, but for some reason, it bothered me.

“I’ll say.”

“Then I think I heard a loud noise, and that was when I ran down to check.”

“Did you see anyone else there?”

“No.”

I lowered my voice. “Have you seen Hak at all?”

“No, not since yesterday.”

Jaeha grimaced and sweat poured down his face. “It wasn’t Hak,” he squeezed out.

“Hey, you’re alive. Who was it, then?”

“Some… big guy…”

“Big guy?”

“…Nice ‘n… scruffy… like a pira---bleeghh!”

Kija and I scrambled to get Jaeha to the bathroom over the toilet. As he bowed before the porcelain throne, I looked back to Kija. “Were you guys drinking up here or something?”

“No, we only had some snacks.”

“A punch in the face shouldn’t do this. If it wasn’t alcohol, then my best guess is poison.”

“Poison!? He’s been poisoned!?”

I didn’t give myself half a second to think about it, but it sounded plausible—after all, we were already trying to track down an attempted murderer, why wouldn’t they try some other methods if someone was on their trail? “They tried to silence him!?”

“But… but who would have had poison? P… poison comes from plants, right?”

“Yuno! Oh, gods, but why would Yuno poison him?”

“Yuno? She’s the woman across from Yona on the fourth floor, right?”

Jaeha mumbled and stirred, his eyes were unfocused and his head was unsteady. “That’s right, her name’s Yuno… I think…”

Kija and I drew closer. “You think…?”

“I think I…”

“You what?”

He squinted, staring out at the distance. “I think I was flirting with her boyfriend.”

“…wait. You mean Geun-tae?”

“Uh-hhmmnn.”

“Jaeha! How lewd! No wonder she poisoned you!”

“No! No, wait, wait, stop!” I shouted. “Yuno wouldn’t do that. Geun-tae probably punched you thinking you’re the pervert who had been bothering her.”

“Wha...?”

“Jaeha!” gasped Kija. “You’re a pervert?”

“Actually, now that I think about it, you probably are. Her room is right above yours, so she probably overheard those porn DVDs.”

“Pornography!?”

“Hey!” snapped Jaeha. “Those are works of art! And I only bring over consenting, conscious adults—bleeeggghhh—”

“For crying out loud,” I slapped a hand against my forehead. “He obviously didn’t consent. Why were you flirting with him in the first place? Was this really an appropriate time?”

“I don’t know,” he whimpered into the toilet. “I don’t even know. He’s not even my type! Ohhhh, just let me diiiiiie.”

“Don’t die in my bathroom!”

Jaeha yelled again in pain as he clenched his stomach, and I opened my mouth to tell him he’d be fine when--

“Who’s dying?”

“Ahh!” Kija and I both jumped. Hak was standing in the bathroom doorway, looming over us with his arms folded and a scowl across his face. Kija stood right up to face him with a claw-like fingernail against his chest. “Hak! What are you doing wandering into my room?”

“You’re the one who left the door open and started making all that racket. What’s going on here?”

“I’m die… dying…”

Hak gave Jaeha a calculating glance, then glared back at Kija. “What did you feed him?”

“Feed him? You think I’m the one who would poison him?”

“Yes!” he barked back. “What did you bring back from your grandmother this time?”

“This time?” I looked between the two of them. “Kija, what snacks did you and Jaeha have?”

“White Dragon Cookies, from my granny.”

Hak marched into the kitchenette and came back with a white box laden with tissue paper. “Are these them?”

“Yes. But don’t do anything to them, I haven’t had one yet.”

“That’s why you’re not the one with your head in a toilet!”

“Let me see those,” I stood up, then took a whiff of one of the thumb-sized sweets. For cookies, they were very shiny. The noxious smell immediately made me light-headed and recoil from the box. “Ungh! Ahgh! What is in those?”

“Granny only said they were baked with love.”

“Ahhhhh!!” Jaeha screamed, his eyes wide and fang-like teeth gleaming. “They were an aphrodisiac! No wonder! Uunghh!”

“Whatever they were, they’re rancid now. No wonder Jaeha got sick. Why did you even put those in your mouth?”

Kija fumed. “Don’t insult my granny’s cooking!”

“Insult them?” Hak’s eyes flared. “Whatever you brought home last week was even worse. What was that candy supposed to be?”

“Candy?” I darted my glance back to Kija, who was starting to shrink away under everyone’s stares.

“It was… last week I was felt like I was going to catch a cold, so she gave me cough drops.”

“Cough drops are medicine, Kija! Hak,” I looked back at him. “Did you eat one?”

“Yes. I left it on my counter and then noticed it again on Tuesday, so I popped it in my mouth and didn’t think anything of it. It started kicking in a couple hours later,” he trailed off, cheeks blushing as he called to mind the events of that day.

Kija’s face went as white as his sheets. “Oh… Oh, Hak, I’m sorry.”

“Why?” I asked.

“Those have a very short shelf-life. I should have told you to eat it right away that night, on Saturday.”

Hak looked wild-eyed at Kija. “You knew they’d do that?”

“I-I don’t know what it did to you, but knowing how a few of my cousins reacted to them while we were growing up, I…”

“Kija!” I yelled. “What is your grandmother, some kind of drug distributor?”

“No, she’s a chemist.”

“Damn it, Kija! It’s your fault I’m getting treated like I’m a criminal!”

“But you are!” he clenched his hands into fists and shouted back. “We all know what you did to Kan Taejun!”

“Kija—”

Hak was silent. I started to shake as I looked between them. If Hak wanted to, he could very easily put a hole through any of our faces. Even Jaeha was looking more nervous than pained as he stared up, waiting for someone to speak again. Hak blinked, then said, “You mean that I punched him?”

“Aha!” Kija shouted. “You admit it! You’re the one who beat him up in the alley last night!”

“Kija, stop—”

“I won’t stand for getting accused of something I didn’t do,” Hak glared back. “I haven’t even seen him since I hit him on Tuesday.”

“Wait!” I shouted, putting my hands up between them. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Now let’s all sit down and sort this out calmly, please.”

We relocated back to Kija’s bed. Kija and Hak dragged Jaeha back over and I helped to make him more comfortable. He seemed like he was in a little less pain than before, but his face was still green with misery. I asked if he was going to be sick again and said, “Yoon, you stink.”

“Sorry. I haven’t had a chance to shower yet.”

“Kind of like… the stairs…” he trailed off and closed his eyes.

Hak paid close attention and Kija stayed respectfully quiet as I explained Taejun’s injury, Soo-won’s approach to the situation, Joon-gi’s recollection of the details, as well as Jaeha’s recollection that Yona and Taejun had been arguing.

Kija’s fist tightened. “He’s such a slimy jerk. I hate to say it, but he had it coming.”

“Punching him felt good, I’ll admit.”

“Let’s start there,” I suggested. “Hak, you ate the cough drop from Kija on Tuesday morning, correct?”

“A little before lunch, yeah.”

“And then it started making you antsy a couple hours later, so you went for a run, right?”

“Yes.”

“Kija, was this also the day you came home to find Taejun bothering Yona in the elevator, right?”

“Yes. It was around 4:15. I yelled at him and he was spooked and ran out the front door. I offered to help Yona more, but she said she didn’t need me because she has Hak.”

He perked up. “She said that?”

“Yes.”

“Oh.”

“And Hak, around what time did you punch Taejun?”

“Probably around 4:15.”

“And neither of you have seen him since?”

“No.”

“I haven’t, but how can we believe you, Hak? Yoon talked to Soo-won, and he said you two have conflicting alibis!”

Hak raised an eyebrow to me. “Come again?”

“When I asked where you were yesterday evening, you said you were working out. Soo-won didn’t know how you answered and said you were in his room.”

“And you were in a rush to shower when you got back last night—very suspicious!”

Hak looked befuddled for a moment, but then he hit his fist in his palm. “Ah! I see what you mean. I was in Soo-won’s room. He got a treadmill and weight set and invited me to go try them out with him. I was all sweaty after using the treadmill.”

“Oh, really?” blinked Kija. “I knew his apartment was bigger. It really fits that much?”

“Yeah. I didn’t think it would, but it’s a nice set-up.”

“Oh. Maybe he’ll let me try it out sometime too.”

“How about Yona?” I asked. “Did either of you talk to Yona since the incident with Taejun on Tuesday?”

Hak frowned. “I talked to her later that night, but I was still feeling weird. I…” he averted his eyes and turned red, “I was getting in her business too much. At one point I pinned her against the wall.”

“You what!?”

“Down, Kija! Was that it, Hak?”

“Yeah. That was when I knew something was wrong with me, and I went to sleep early after that.”

“Have you seen her since then?”

“I tried to apologize to her on Thursday. She didn’t want to hear it.”

“Was that all?”

He frowned and continued in a lower voice. “I tried to find out who she’s been hanging out with lately. She doesn’t want to say who.”

“That’s none of your business anyway,” Kija scoffed.

“I was worried about her safety! Anyway, we argued again, so I haven’t seen her since.”

“I haven’t run into her either.”

“And what about the pervert?” Hak pointed to Jaeha.

“I’m pretty sure he hasn’t talked to her or to Taejun,” I said. “But I talked with her in her apartment this morning.”

Hak sharpened his glance at me. “And?”

“They did have some kind of argument. Yona didn’t want to talk about it,” I said, feeling my words get quieter as I tumbled toward what was sounding closer and closer to the truth. “But a homeless person who witnessed it happen in the alley did.” I pulled out the shard in my pocket to show them and finished, “He said this was what hit Taejun. It came from the fourth story window.”

Kija simply stared, but Hak pursed his lips and fell into his own thoughts. I gulped and waited for his response.

“We should go down and talk to Yona.”

“I agree.” “What? Right now?” Kija looked between us. “It’s so late! I don’t get it. Why?”

“You stay here with Jaeha. We’ll take care of this.”

Detective Genius: Part 3 of 8

Chapter Three: The Justice-Selling Nurse and the Case of the Missing Creme Puffs

Synopsis: Yoon is a financially struggling nurse and recognizes a trauma victim, Taejun, as someone from his boarding house. The victim’s brother, Kyoga, suspects foul play and offers Yoon money to figure out who caused this. The landlord, Soo-won, discourages Yoon from getting involved, but in order to support himself and his adoptive father Ik-soo, Yoon investigates the suspicious other residents--and then some. Genre: Modern Day AU, (Attempted!?) Murder Mystery in Classic ‘Who Done It?’ Style, General. Could be read as comedy, drama, or melodrama. Words: 2,470 Warnings: I don’t kill anyone, but I do make them suffer a little (sorry, Taejun, somebody had to be the victim). Probably nothing that would make people squeamish, as the focus is on the plot. Find the other chapters in the master post.

Hak stomped in so quickly that I barely had time to move out of his way. I was pushed up against Soo-won’s door when the other man followed him; he looked to be in his 30’s or 40’s and had a large scar on his right cheek. Hak marched straight to the elevator and turned to face the man while he waited for it.

“Quit hounding me. If you’re not going to listen, then I have nothing else to say to you.”

“Look, Hak, I’m trying to help. I’ve been trying to help this whole time, but you’re not even working with me. Hey! Look at me when I’m talking to you!”

The elevator doors finally opened. When Hak went inside he had his hands up to keep the man from following him inside, and he hit the button to close the doors several times.

“Hak—”

Hak was out of sight. The man let out a mix of a grumble and a sigh, and when he turned around, our eyes met. There was no way to pretend I hadn’t witnessed what happened, and I tried to lighten the air. “Are you… uh… one of his relatives?”

“Tch,” he scoffed with a wry smile. “I’m his social worker.”

My face lit up, but dread also churned in my stomach. “I feel you! I’m a nurse.”

His expression softened as well, like he had found a kindred spirit in me. “Then you know how it is.”

“Is everything alright with Hak?”

“You know him?” his brows knit upward. “I can’t overshare.”

“I’m worried about him,” I said. I worried in some sense of the word, anyway.

“Me too. I don’t know why he started backtracking like this. Maybe being out on his own in the world was too much stress for him.”

“What do you mean?”

“He’s barely aged out of the system. Moved into his friends’ place and said he’d be fine. He doesn’t want to rely on any of the adults in his life anymore, so he won’t tell us anything.”

“He’s got his pride to protect.”

“What’s he got to prove by punching some guy in the face!?”

My eyes widened. So did his, but for different reasons.

“One minute he says he did it, the next he tells me he’s not to blame. That he wasn’t in his right mind. That’s what we call an anger issue, but he has the gall to say he doesn’t have one! Argh!” The man put a hand to his temple and looked away. “Please excuse me, I’ve said too much.”

“Wait!” a reached out to him as he tried to pass me by. “Can you… can I get your name? And a phone number?”

His eyes lingered on me for a moment, trying to read my face. I did my best not to show any of the connections my brain was fearfully putting together. I had already told myself I couldn’t implicate Hak until I was sure he was the guilty one! But if Hak really was violent, then I couldn’t dive into this alone.

The man stuck a hand into his pocket, but found it empty. “Do you have a pen and paper?”

“Y-Yes,” I fumbled, quickly turning several pages away from my notes. He took it, wrote something down, handed it back, then said a simple good-bye as he headed out. The note was only a phone number and his first name, Joo-doh.

After making a few notes, I went outside, turned left, then left again. It was time to investigate the alley.

The was no immediate trace of yesterday’s incident; the last of the drizzle must had washed away the footprints of the emergency responders and any of Taejun’s blood. There were big piles of trash there, some stacked well above my head, and there were old housewares, kitchen scraps, and tired looking, bright flowers strewn about. The smell made me gag; I could not imagine what business Taejun, who always liked to dress well, would have in this place. If he had come here and if someone wanted to harm him, the garbage and shadows would have provided plenty of cover even during the daytime. I peered around the piles, trying to imagine how a full-grown man could fit among them.

Something above my head made a skidding noise.

I let out a shriek and tried to get away, but my back was square against the neighboring building. With nowhere to flee I looked up at what it was and saw Joon-gi, the man in room 202, staring back from his window.

“An awful stench, isn’t it?” he said. “People who don’t even live here toss all their rubbish here. Makes it easier for the beggars to find a meal, I suppose.”

“You—you see homeless people around here?”

“Oh, yes. This is such a dreadful area. Thankfully my daughter is safe away at boarding school.”

“…You can afford boarding school and you live here?”

“Ahem. That’s why I live here.”

“I see. That’s… that’s really terrible that you’ve got the window closest to this dump.”

“It’s truly awful. But that’s why I am the neighborhood watch committee. Self-appointed, I might add. Someone had to do it after all that toilet paper was going missing from the supply closet and someone started stealing my cream puffs from the communal freezer.”

“A committee is more than one—nevermind. Did you see anything happen here yesterday?”

“I didn’t see it happen. I have terrible eyesight, you know, especially in the dark.”

“…”

“But I heard it happen.”

“You did?”

He smiled. “You’re referring to that boy’s injury, aren’t you? Terrible, isn’t it. That’s what he gets for loitering in an alley in the inner-city. What did he think was going to happen? My guess is that one of the bums got him. Maybe the tall one with the squirrel.”

“What exactly did you hear happen yesterday?”

His squinty eyes lingered on my notepad ready in hand. There was a hiss in his voice when he asked, “Why do you want to know?”

“I was his nurse at the hospital.”

“Is that really why you want to know?”

I felt caught for a moment. Before I could answer, he went on.

“You should be careful. If it wasn’t a bum that did it, you’ll be putting the target on your back next.”

“Would you please tell me what happened?”

“I was making myself a cup of tea when I heard the sound of ‘gyah!’ outside. I thought it was odd and it reminded me of Taejun—he’s my neighbor across the hall, so I hear him a lot, you see.”

“What time was that?”

“Oh, sometime between 6 and 6:30, I suppose.”

“And then what?”

“Well, I drank my tea, of course.”

“That was it? You only heard him, and that was it?”

“No, of course not! I was the one who called the ambulance.”

“Before you drank your tea?”

“No, after I had a few cups of it.”

“………Why didn’t you—”

“I decided there was no reason to rush. As long as he didn’t make any other noise like calling for help, I assumed he was fine.”

“When did do you finally figure out he wasn’t fine?”

“When I finished my tea.”

“So, about five or ten minutes later?”

He chuckled coldly. “Yoon, you’ve never had good tea, have you? You have to take at least half an hour. I already in the process of it when I heard him, so by the time I looked out the window, it was closer to 6:45. My kitchen cast enough light for me to see his legs very clearly, and I knew by the quality of his shoes that it couldn’t have been one of the bums, and I then I called an ambulance.”

“How much later did you do that? An hour later?”

“What do you take me for?” he huffed. “Of course I called as soon as I saw the body! They got here within ten minutes of me seeing him, and then had him on the stretcher and shipped out within a few minutes after that. I heard Soo-won go out and talk to them, and they asked him to contact his next of kin, and that was that, another job well done for the neighborhood watch.”

I didn’t even know where to start. Joon-gi took a sip of his tea then asked if I had any other questions. I said no, and thanked him for his important service.

It was about time to go run some errands before making lunch. Today I would have to make extra for Yuno, so it would require some extra effort as well. While I was out, I bought a canned coffee and took a seat in the deli area of the supermarket so that I could organize my notes. I wanted to get out of the boarding house to give myself a wider view of the situation. I started with a list of what I knew. “5 or 6” (according to Jaeha): Yona and Taejun talk/fight. Yona says he didn’t seem to have plans to hurt himself. Between “6 and 6:30” (Joon-gi): Taejun is struck by something and falls unconscious in the north alley. Between “6:20 and 6:40” (Kija): Kija gets home, sees Hak. About 6:45: Joon-gi calls the ambulance. About 6:55: The ambulance arrives and takes Taejun away. Yona hears sirens. Soo-won talks to paramedics. 7:10-ish: Taejun arrives at the hospital and receives treatment.

Between 6pm and 6:45pm: Rm 502: Kija arrived home at some point and talked to Hak on 5th floor. Rm 501: Hak arrived on the 5th floor at some point. Grouchy, flushed, wet. Rm 402: Yona was likely still in her apartment after having been bothered by Taejun. Rm 401: Yuno was probably still out on her date and came back this morning. Rm 302: Ik-soo was home, I was at work. Rm 301: Jaeha stayed long enough to overhear Yona and Taejun, likely left before hearing sirens. Rm 202: Joon-gi was drinking tea and heard Taejun, later called the ambulance. Rm 201: Taejun was in Yona’s room at some point, and later in the alley. Rm 100: Soo-won was mopping the stairwell (???????)

I know he had to have been in there long enough to have mopped all five flights of stairs, and he was still doing it when I arrived home after 9. But when he did start? He was outside around 6:55 talking to the paramedics. He could have started after that and finished in two hours. But why would he do something like that after one of his tenants suffered a serious injury?

Soo-won had also spoken to Kyoga at some point between 7:00 and 8:00, and he told Kyoga not to make a big deal of this.

What did Soo-won have to hide?

I jotted down some other notes:

Soo-won, Hak, Yona: Childhood friends/relatives Joon-gi, Jaeha: Nosy Taejun, Yona: Taejun was bothering Yona. My phone buzzed in my pocket. It made me jump, and I hurriedly pulled it out and flipped it open. “Hello?”

“Yoon? This is Kyoga. Taejun woke up!”

“Oh, that’s good. How is he doing?”

“It’s good, but he’s… not good.”

I furrowed my eyebrows. “Can you elaborate?”

“I asked him what happened, but he’s babbling on about something. I can hardly make sense of it. One second he’s trying to answer my question about the alley, and the next minute he’s talking about flowers, flowers everywhere, and of all things, a pineapple, and then he starts crying. Is he… is he going to be okay?”

“My guess is that he’s still medicated, but that’s a question for the nurses on duty. Is that all you can get out of him?”

“Yes. It’s been the same conversation three times in a row. He just gets a little more animated every time, and that’s making it more and more confusing to try to follow.”

“I’d take that development as a good sign.”

“Have you figured things out on your end?”

“Not yet, but I’m… yes, you could call this progress.”

“Do you know who did it?”

I paused, looking at the list of names. My eyes lingered on Hak’s. “Not yet.”

“Please tell me as soon as you can.”

“I’ll do my best. You have to remember that I’m not a detective by trade, but given your choices in the boarding house, I’m probably the best person you can ask. This might be unrelated, but have you heard anything about… well…”

“What?”

“Has Taejun been punched in the face?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“When we kids.” He sighed and went on, “To be fair, he usually had it coming. Do you mean recently?”

“Yes. He hasn’t mentioned anything like that to you?”

“Not that I’ve heard. Let me ask… no, he’s asleep again. He’s got some bruises on the left side of his face, probably from hitting the ground last night, but that’s about all I can tell. Maybe if I look really hard there are some spots on his other cheek, but…”

“That’s alright. Don’t worry about it.”

“Why do you ask?”

I felt a knot in my throat, as though I was choking on silence.

Kyoga filled the silence. “Is there someone who would have punched him?”

“It was just a guess to see if there was,” I lied. “It could have been anything, not necessarily a punch to the face. I was only hoping for a lead.”

“What have you found out so far?”

“Ah! My battery! Sorry, I’m out of the boarding house right now and my phone’s about to die. Send a text if you get anything else out of Taejun!”

“Alri—”

“Bye!”

I slammed the phone shut with a loud clack and threw it on the table, as if that would keep the pressure to figure things out further away from me. It would be easy to make assumptions, but I couldn’t turn in an innocent person. I had to be sure before meddling with someone’s life, especially if someone like Hak already had a rough start. I would never be able to face Ik-soo if I did, and I had no choice but to face Ik-soo every day because of our cramped living quarters.

But we also needed money to pay for those living quarters. All I needed to do was find the truth and sell it to Kyoga. If Hak really was guilty, then it was his own fault.

To find out, I would have to talk to him. And I was going to have to get more information out of Soo-won too.
