Oh boy, here we go.
So my cousin sent me an article today about how the men that captured John Andre, (John Paulding, David Williams and Isaac Van Wart), were awarded by Congress, and one of their awards is going to be placed in a museum...
This article is wild!!!
It goes on, and on, and on about what great patriots they were, and even mentions a "Congressman" stood up and said they were cowboys and not patriots and didn't deserve a greater pension. This article doesn't name drop Ben Tallmadge once, but that's obviously who they were talking about.
Tumblr media
In the last scene of Turn, you can see this moment, and I like the way they portrayed it. The men that captured Andre are not "patriots." They just so happened to stop Andre because they intended to rob him. And doing so, they found the plans to West Point and the rest is history. They did not go above and beyond the call of duty, they did not do it for noble reasons. They found him simply because they're greedy.
I think Ben Tallmadge would be rolling in his grave to see this man's award in a museum today alongside artifacts from true American heroes.
At the end of the article, it states the phrase written on the award, "Vincit Amor Patriae," meaning "Love of Country Conquers." These men clearly loved money more than their country, and should not be rewarded for something they did out of greed rather than true heroism.
Read the article, if you'd like, and tell me what you think. I agree that unsung heroes of the war should be acknowledged, but only when they are truly doing something for pure reasons and not selfish ones.

A personal update: I am one week away from graduating Intelligence School in Fort Huachuca, AZ. We just finished our culminating event, where we stayed in a tent for three days making battle plans and analyzing enemy intelligence to do so. I gave two briefs to the commander (like Ben would) and I maxed out the points and got the highest grade possible. Still trying to make Ben proud!

Caleb and Ben bought land!
I have found the source!
"Loyalism in New York during the American Revolution", found (where else) on Archive.org, a website I will be donating my entire first paycheck to when I find employment again for saving my ass at least a dozen times this year and that is not an exaggerated number. (https://archive.org/details/loyalisminnewyor00flic/page/252/mode/2up)
Page 251-252:
Tumblr media
The entry notes that the Loyalist owner of the land, Richard Floyd, disposessed of his land by attainder, had his land sold to "Benj. Talmage and Caleb Brewster" for 730 pounds, covering The Middle of the Island Farm in Brookhaven township, 4 1/3 lors, about 320 acres, "reserving to William Floyd, Esq., and to his heirs and assigns one lot and one-half lot of the above described lands claimed by him as his property." The land was bordered in the north by William Clark, east by William Smith, south by John Homan, and west by the Connecticut River.
Parker Wickham, also under attainder, had his land sold for 1250 pounds to Ben and Caleb. It was a "tract in Southold township known as Robin's Island, about 350 acres. No definite boundary given."
(5K, domesticity, bittersweet ending, but hey that's just where my mind goes.)
There's more, though. With some... familiar names.
Tumblr media
We've got a listing for a Joseph Brewster of Brook Haven Township, buying land bordered by a Benjamin Floyd. I cannot for the life of me find a Joseph in Caleb's known family tree but maybe I'm using incomplete information.
(EDIT: FOUND HIM! And you'll never guess where. You know Abraham Woodhull, the Abraham Woodhull, well he had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married an Isaac Brewster, who is the son of a Joseph Brewster from Setauket. If this is the same Joseph, he's Abe's daughter's in-laws. They're parent-in-laws. What the-- Oh, and is this Joseph a direct relation to Caleb Brewster? I honestly don't know, WikiTree is so unhelpful in mapping out these families.)
Benjamin Floyd himself is buying land that's bordered in the east by a Nathaniel Woodhull -- land that was Richard Floyd's, taken by attainder. Is this Woodhull a relation to Abe? No idea. Is Benjamin Floyd a relation to Richard Floyd? Could a family member buy land that had been taken by attainder?
And then we've got Caleb Brewster himself throwing in lots, literally, with the same Benjamin Floyd, buying four lots in Nocamock.
(Benjamin Tallmadge, you may remember, married a Mary Floyd, though I can't find evidence of a Benjamin in her family).
Ooooh I wanna know, I wanna know so bad. What was going on here? How did they all know each other? And did they?

@pagetreader continued from x
She half yelped, drawing her hands away when Isaac stirred under the prodding of the forceps, but then her hands returned, her touch more forceful now, fretting he might jolt awake and spoil his surgery.
"Do they normally do that?" She asked quietly to no one in particular. Elias was still making his own aimless comments, perhaps to steady his hands, perhaps to settle both their nerves; she wasn't sure.
It seemed to Molly that her father was one of the few men in town who hadn't previously seen warfare. When it came to men like Mr. Abbot or Reverend Tallmadge or even Lucas Brewster, any of them she'd prefer to go to for aid in moments like this. She knew her father, if he was still breathing, would be useless in this area, though, then again, he was useless in most areas.
Tumblr media
“ I need to prepare the sutures, Molly dear. Go ahead and put pressure there until I’m ready. As much as ye can. In a moment I’ll tell ye what to do next. ” She nodded, using her apron to keep her hands from slipping as she pressed down firmly on Isaac's side, gritting her teeth from the exertion. She took some consolation in the fact that his skin was warm, though she couldn't feel his pulse so easily. Molly found herself silently recounting the Lord's Prayer. She wasn't one to turn to prayer, especially not when she believed her own woes were nothing worth pestering the Lord about, but these weren't her woes, they were Isaac's, they were his father's, and there was comfort in the repetition of the words, "Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven..."
Her brow furrowed when Elias instructed her to grab the horn of gunpowder, but even when her confusion showed plainly on her face, she followed his orders, her hands not trembling as badly now when she held the blade to the flame. She knew the basics of cauterizing wounds, but she'd never seen it done this way, and the crackle the gunpowder made in Isaac's wound, and the terrible cry he groaned, made her tense, made her wish to jump back, to fall to her knees and cry at the brutality of it all.
“ Oh, quiet, ye blasted fool. Ye brought this on yerself. " She agreed with the statement, even if the reason for his foolery was for a different reason. “Thank ye for the help, dear. I’m sure it wasn’t how ye planned to spend yer night, patchin’ up my moronic son. ”
She managed to scoff a soft laugh; the sentiment was faux, but it helped, even just a little. "Thank you." She meant it, she knew he'd be dead if she'd been left to her own devices. "I doubt anyone else in town would have the sense to... well..." She swallowed. "He'll be all right then?"

Tallmadge Siblings
I went and dug farther into the lives of Benjamin Tallmadge’s siblings as I needed it for TUCUFM. I had information but I decided to go even deeper in some research. I previous did Nathan Hale’s siblings here!
William Tallmadge (October 17th, 1752 - September 1776)
William Tallmadge the first child born to Benjamin and Susannah Tallmadge.
He was the only Tallmadge son not born in Setauket but instead White Plains, Westchester county, where the family lived at his birth. They lived  there until 1753.
He didn’t attend college it is believed.
By 1776 (possibly earlier), William was an officer in the Continental Army.
In September (most likely earlier) William was captured by the British and placed on the prison ship HMU Jersey in the New York harbor.
Amid the neglect by the British soldiers aboard and the disease, dehydration and starvation--William died of one of these atrocities due to the conditions on the British prison ships less than a month before his twenty-fourth birthday.
His body was very recovered and it was most likely thrown over the side of the ship into the waters.
Benjamin Tallmadge (February 25th, 1754 - March 7th, 1835)
Tumblr media
Samuel Tallmadge (November 23rd, 1755 - April 1st, 1825)
Samuel Tallmadge wasn’t given the education his father or his two oldest brothers nor did he go to college.
He was prepared for a mercantile career.
May 16th, 1775, he joined his neighbors "of the fo[u] rth Company of Brookhaven" in signing a petition to send a representative to the Provincial Convention to be held in New York City.
He served in the Brookhaven militia in 1775.
June 8th of that year with other "Freeholders and inhabitants within the Bounds of the 4th Militia Company of Brookhaven" he signed an "association" which protested against Britain and pledged themselves.
He was listed among "Refugees of 1776" from Long Island to Connecticut. Samuel was driven out of his home by the British.
May 1776 he enlisted in Suffolk county under Captain Daniel Roe's company in Colonel Henry B. Livingston's regiment of the New York Line.
November 21st, 1776 he volunteered for the duration of the war as a member of the 4th New York Regiment.
Samuel Tallmadge participated in the Battle of Long Island and the Battle of White Plains in 1776.
1777 he was with the detachment of his regiment which participated in the Battle of Saratoga and was at Burgoyne's surrender. He was probably at Valley Forge.
His name does not appear in the list of officers but he acted as a "clerk or orderly sergeant" under Captain Sackett's First Company.
Samuel Tallmadge was appointed ensign November 9th, 1777.
Major Benjamin Tallmadge took up with Governor Clinton to support his brother’s need of a promotion.
July 9th, 1778 he was designated regimental adjutant of the 4th New York Regiment and served until January 1, 1781.
Samuel Tallmadge participated in the Sullivan Campaign in 1779
September 15th, 1780 Samuel was appointed Adjutant to the 4th New York Regiment in place of Lieutenant Peter Ellsworth promoted from July 9th last.
January 1st, 1781, he was transferred to the 2d New York Regiment commanded by Colonel Philip Van Cortlandt.
October 27th, of that year he was changed to second lieutenant,
April 10th, 1782, he was promoted to first lieutenant of the 5th company of the 2d New York Regiment in place of Lieutenant Glenny who died October 27, 1781.
During this time he was intimately associated with Colonel Henry Beekman Livingston.
He participated in the siege of Yorktown and the surrender of Cornwallis.
During the remainder of the war he was with his regiment in New Jersey, on the Hudson and up the Mohawk.
When the New York Society of the Cincinnati was organized in June 1783 Samuel Tallmadge became a member.
Among friends and relatives he was known after the Revolution as "Captain Tallmadge" from his appointment as captain of the Dutchess County Militia in 1786.
As regimental adjutant he was a staff officer whose duty it was to assist the commanding officer in the discharge of details of his military duties. He also kept the Orderly Book up to date and gave out the orders to the brigades and companies.
He was mustered out of the army in June 1783.
He married in Kinderhook, New York Mary Hilton of Albany on July 3rd, 1783, and located to Rhinebeck as a merchant and opened a store. He resided there until about 1789. His business did not prosper.
April 30th, 1785, he made a claim for 1200 acres as lieutenant of the 2d New York Regiment and also for an additional 1200 acres by virtue of rights transferred to him by Cornelius Van Ness and Thomas Marshall ) at an earlier date.
July 9th, 1790 he was granted 600 acres in the towns of Homer and Brutus and in Onondaga county.
With loans from others he bought a farm of several hundred acres in the town of Charleston, Montgomery county.
At Rhinebeck three of his children were born: Mary (1784), Benjamin (after his brother in 1786) and Samuel (after himself in 1787). Four others were born at Charleston: William H (possibly after his eldest brother in 1791). Susannah (possibly after his mother in 1793), John (possibly after his youngest brother in 1796), and Isaac S. (possible after his youngest brother in 1799).
Son Samuel Smith Tallmadge in 1797 went to live in the family of his uncle, John Tallmadge, in Warren, Connecticut where he attended school, clerked in the store and took up the life of a merchant.
Samuel Tallmadge located on a farm two miles northwest of the hamlet of Riders Corners. He cleared the land and erected a log cabin.1800 he built a comfortable house.
After a long illness, he died on April 1st, 1825  at the age of 69. His wife died on April 28th of the same year. Both are buried in the Charleston cemetery.
He was a devoted attendant of the "True Reformed" or "Wyckafite" Church and probably satisfied his simple yearnings for social intercourse within its membership.
In old age he claimed pension from the government.
April 6th, 1818, he appeared before the First Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Montgomery County to make an affidavit of his services as a Revolutionary soldier.
Tumblr media
John Tallmadge (September 19th, 1757 - February 24th, 1823)
Did some work in the Culper Spy Ring: code 249 in the book.
Married on January 8th, 1788 in Warren, Litchfield Connecticut to Phebe Pomeroy (born February 9th 1766 in Northampton, Hampshire, died December 13th, in Warren, Litchfield). Both are buried at Warren Center Cemetery in Litchfield, Connecticut
ornTheir children were Laura Tallmadge (born 1788), Phebe Sheldon Tallmadge (after her mother in 1790), Frances Fowler Tallmadge (born 1792), Charles Benjamin Tallmadge (middle after after his brother Benjamin, born 1792), John Smith Tallmadge (after his father, born 1798)  and George Pomeroy Tallmadge (born 1802).
Isaac Tallmadge (February 25th, 1762 - ?)
Nothing is known of him.

This Winter's Sky
Turn Week 2021 | Day 7: What you would have wanted to see/Favorite AU
What I would have most wanted to see is more of people just being happy, because even in grim wartime, life finds a way. So, I’ve bent my sword of angst into a plowshare of fluff, and I present you with another snippet. This one doesn't contain spoilers but will really make much more sense if you've read the rest of All Done Up in Blue & Gold (here on AO3).
It was cold and dark, and the never-ceasing snow fell around us. Our lanterns created a halo of light, and the lights in the windows of the house seemed farther away than they were. We were completely and utterly alone. The snow wasn’t a storm, like it was that night we first met, but when the wind rose, sending the flakes cascading to the side, our cloaks went along with it, ridding us of our most effective way to maintain warmth.
I clutched at my cloak, pulling it back to position and shivering.
“Are you warm enough? Should we go inside? I can walk you over to your house to warm up—“
“Stop it, Ben, I’m fine. Though it might be warmer for us to stand closer together.”
He looked at me, his eyebrow raised and head tilted slightly. A slow smile spread across his face. “Well, then, come here.” Ben wrapped his arm around me, his cloak then around both of us. “More romantic than usual, aren’t you?” he whispered into my ear.
“I can be romantic when I want to.”
“Oh, really?”
“Yes. I’ve had practice.”
“Alright then, show me.”
“With pleasure, sir. Your hair… is nice,” I said, no comedic inflection in my tone.
He burst into laughter, and I pretended offense. “What? Your hair is nice!”
“That’s your idea of something romantic?”
“Fine. Let me try again.” I took a deep breath. “Your eyes bewitch me, enchant me, enrapture me. When they fix on me I cannot move, cannot speak, because you are all I know. They shine like the moon, glitter like the stars and burn with the fire of a thousand suns.”
“Well—“ he breathed heavily, looking surprised.
“Flustered, are you, Benny Boy?” I breathed.
He chuckled, gathering himself. “Not at all.”
“Then it’s your turn.”
“Of course, my lady.” He stopped and thought for a moment. “Your skin is softer than eiderdown and more perfect, despite any blemishes, than a fresh coat of snow. When I look into your eyes, your beautiful, clear eyes, more alive than the surface of the ocean as the sun glints off it, I long to take you away from all this, to a place where it can be you and me, just us together, for all time and always.”
“Why, Major Tallmadge, you know your way with the ladies.” I placed my hand over my heart, feigning surprise.
“I never claimed otherwise.”
“Sometimes I wish we could go and leave all of this behind.” I looked off into the darkness. “But we can’t. Not yet.”
“Not yet.” He joined me in my gaze.
“One day we’ll be on our own, with our own family, but for now we’ll have to make do with mine.”
“And we will.”
We looked back at each other, and when our eyes met a tingling started in my heart and spread throughout my entire body. It was a new feeling, so, slightly afraid of it, I swiftly changed the subject.
“I could beat you in a snowball fight.”
He raised his eyebrows at me, cocking his head to the side. “You’re sure about that?”
We broke apart.
“Absolutely. Ask Tempe. She will assure you of my prowess.”
“I disagree. You don’t grow up alongside four brothers without learning your best strategy in a snowball fight.”
“Girls are more ruthless, and I fought with two of my three sisters. We’d build forts in the clearing, divide ourselves into teams, and James, Phebe, Tempe, and I would go at it for hours. Tempe and I were not initially much of an asset, seeing as James and Phebe were sixteen and eleven years older than us, but we learned quickly.”
“William, Samuel, Isaac, and John were no less brutal.”
“You were an older brother! You got to change the rules whenever they stopped suiting you!”
“You’re older than Tempe!”
“But I am sixteen years younger than James!”
“Didn’t your mother tell him to be gentle with you and Tempe?”
“Of course she did, but he still had every advantage over us.”
“If you’ve overcome such adversity, why don’t you prove your expertise?”
“With pleasure.” I placed my lantern to the side, kneeling in the snow to pack five good, solid snowballs. Ben did the same, and then we stood. “There is simply no time to build a structure up to the standards of my youth, so we shall go without.”
He smiled at me. “As you wish.”
“Well, then, shall we begin?” I grinned wickedly, holding my snowballs in my arms, one in my right hand, ready to throw.
He mirrored my position. “Ye—“
Before he could even finish that one word, the snowball flew from my hand, exploding on his shoulder.
“Come on!” he shouted as I danced along the edge of the light.
He lobbed one of his projectiles in my general direction, and I easily dodged it. I retaliated with another throw that passed dangerously close to his face. He chased me into the dark, but I could still see him where he stood. He threw another snowball, and another. One hit my skirts, the other my arm. I responded in kind, throwing the remaining three prepared snowballs in quick succession, hitting him twice. As I ran to the side, escaping him momentarily, I scooped up snow in my hands and packed it into a ball. I threw it as well, missing him entirely. Our battle continued in this vein for a good while longer, ending with both of us panting in the circle of light cast by our abandoned lanterns, covered in a fine layer of snow from both the snowballs and the snowfall. He extended his hand to me.
“Truce?”
I took it and shook it. “Truce. But I was the clear victor.”
“It is evident that I won.”
“Mmhm.” I raised my eyebrows. “Some day, I’ll bring you to the clearing and we can do this properly.”
“It would be my pleasure.”
We smiled at each other.
“I should get back.” I gestured towards home. “Mother’s waiting up with a candle.”
“I’ll walk with you.”
We picked up our lanterns and walked together, in step, along a path through the snow that lay on the ground.
“It’s a miracle we didn’t trip over anything in the dark,” I commented.
“Aye, very fortunate. That would have been an embarrassing injury to explain.”
We chuckled, and continued in companionable silence. Quiet was never awkward while we were together. The silence was never empty, never a void that desperately needed filling, but always full of comradeship and contentment with the other’s company.
As we reached the house, he said to me, “Well, until we meet again, ma chére.”
“Au revoir et bonne soirée, mon chaton.”
He grinned, then bowed slightly to me and walked away, his lantern casting a circle of light before him as I went inside, but one thought on my mind:
I love him.
And one day, I will tell him just how much I do.

there’s a full moon in who by fire and irl November 5th of 1776 was...not a full moon by all accounts i've been able to find
there’s no william or john or isaac, and samuel dies unmarried and childless, meaning that the tallmadge line is drastically altered
anna’s children aren’t born until after the war
abe has a son with no real life counterpart
if i remember correctly nathan hale’s death was postponed by like a month, mentioned to take place in october instead of september
sackett died early
many other altered events big and small
Turn absolutely takes place in an Alternate Universe and for all we know their future could be drastically different from the present we’re currently living

OLAW Chapter 5 Sneak Peek
~*~Early November 1767~*~
The people of Setauket had gathered for their yearly celebration.  A large bonfire burned in the centre of the green.  The men chatted with ales in hand.  The women prepared tables of food soon to be served.  Most of the children ran about playing games.  But not nine, almost ten-year-old Lydia Woodhull.  Lydia shifted uncomfortably on the bench from where she sat watching the other children running.  She was quite envious, wishing that she could be out there with them.  But, her father had insisted she sit and not wear herself out because she was finally on the mend from an early autumn cold she had caught.  So, there she sat wrapped in her cloak with a blanket spread across her lap.
Lydia frowned as Abe ran past with Ben and Caleb.  She felt fine, but she knew her father to be over cautious as far as she was concerned.  She fidgeted on the bench before folding her arms across her chest to pout.  Lydia knew that she should be grateful that her father even allowed her to come in the first place, but she couldn’t help her feelings on the matter.   All she could do was try to conceal them and that wasn’t going so well.
“Are you feeling better, Lydia?” a woman’s voice asked as she approached the bench where Lydia sat.  Lydia turned to see that the voice belonged to Missus Tallmadge, Ben’s mother.  The woman smiled softly at the young girl before taking a seat beside her on the bench. “Benjamin tells me that you’ve been ill.”
Lydia nodded her head. “But I’m feeling much better now, thank you.”  She tried to give Ben’s mother a smile, but when the boys ran by once again.  This time Annie Smith was even running about with them.  Lydia couldn’t help but show her jealousy as her face fell and her bottom lip jutted out.
Missus Tallmadge chuckled before she gently pressed her hand against Lydia’s forehead and held it there for a few seconds.  “No fever,” she muttered to herself.  She then cupped Lydia’s cheeks with her hands and eyed her curiously. “Your colouring is good.  I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t be allowed to play for a bit.”
“My father…”
“Surely wouldn’t object between a game of graces between us girls.” Missus Tallmadge smiled, her eyes shining in the firelight. The Tallmadge children must have gotten their rebellious streak from her.  The older woman took hold of Lydia’s hand and led her to a set of hoops and sticks that two girls had left lying there.  Missus Tallmadge picked up a pair of sticks and handed them to Lydia.  “Do you remember how to play?” she asked, having taught Lydia the game during the summer.
Lydia’s brow furrowed. “I believe so.”
Missus Tallmadge gently patted Lydia’s shoulder. “I’ll start and we’ll see what you remember.”  Lydia nodded her head, causing her hood to fall back.  “But first, fix your hood, child.”  Lydia quickly did as she was told as Missus Tallmadge picked up a hoop.  The older woman slipped the hoop on one of her sticks before she managed the second stick through it, crossing the sticks, so that they looked almost like scissors.  “Now, you try to catch the hoop with your sticks, Lydia.”
Lydia chewed her bottom lip and carefully watched as the hoop hurtled toward her.  A slight breeze caused the hoop to veer in a different direction.  Lydia chased after it, but it fell to the ground before she could get close to it.  It was then her turn, she bent over to pick it up before she put the hoop on her sticks and flung it toward Missus Tallmadge.  The older woman caught it and Lydia clapped in excitement.  She liked spending time with Missus Tallmadge much better than she did Widow Browne.  Missus Tallmadge acted like what Lydia thought a mother would act like, Widow Browne never did that.  Besides, Missus Tallmadge said that despite the good Lord blessing her with five sons, she had always hoped for a daughter.
They continued to play, throwing the hoop back and forth until young Isaac Tallmadge came running toward his mother. “Mother! Mother!” the five-year-old called. “John is being mean to me!  He pushed me!”  The small boy wrapped his arms around his mother’s skirts.  John was two months older than Lydia and he was probably the rowdiest of the Tallmadge boys.  He certainly kept his mother on her toes.
Missus Tallmadge looked over at Lydia sympathetically and sighed. “If you’ll excuse me for just a moment,” Missus Tallmadge said to Lydia, gently rubbing Isaac’s back. “Duty calls.”  Lydia nodded her head in understanding.  Missus Tallmadge turned to walk with Isaac when Ben ran past, nearly running into her. “Benjamin!” Missus Tallmadge called.
Ben stopped in his tracks.  He turned to face his mother somewhat sheepishly. “Yes, Mother?” he asked with his hands behind his back.
“Please stay and play with Lydia while I deal with your brothers.”
Lydia could have sworn she saw him breathe a sigh of relief over not being in trouble.  He then nodded his head and said, “Yes, Mother.”

In Game:
Thomas Hickey was a member of the Colonial Rite of the Templar Order. He came over to Colonial America in 1752 and was stationed in Boston. He was assigned as an assistant to William Johnson, a Templar, joining the Order shortly thereafter himself. In 1754, the French and Indian War began, during which Hickey served under Johnson's command.
Upon Haytham Kenway’s arrival in Boston, Hickey and Johnson were recruited to help him find the precursor site. However, Hickey's spies were unable to find any leads, so Johnson sent Hickey to retrieve his stolen research on the Kanien'kehá:ka nation. Following Johnson's orders, Hickey tracked the research to a compound occupied by bandits.
Haytham and Charles Lee arrived shortly thereafter. The three of them attacked the bandits and retrieved the research, returning it to Johnson at the Green Dragon Tavern.
The Templars soon figured out that they would need to befriend the  Kanien'kehá:ka in order to find the precursor site Hickey suggested that they kill Silas Thatcher, who had been enslaving Kanien'kehá:ka people. Haytham and Lee gathered the remaining recruits, Benjamin Church and John Pitcairn, and with everyone assembled at the tavern, Haytham proposed a plan to infiltrate Southgate Fort.
Tumblr media
A year later, Haytham had been in contact with a Kanien'kehá:ka woman, Kaniehtí:io, and the two formulated a plan to kill General Edward Braddock. Hickey assisted in the attack of Braddock's expedition, allowing Haytham to kill the former Templar.
Over the next several years, Hickey maintained a “low profile,” leading an underground black market for the Templars, primarily focusing on forging counterfeit money and providing information through espionage. As the American Revolutionary War began, Hickey left the British Army and joined the Continentals, where he was stationed in the Connecticut militia as an officer.
In 1776, Hickey was given orders by Haytham to murder George Washington so that Charles Lee could replace him as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. Hickey, thus, joined Washington's private guard during the latter's campaign to take New York from the British.
The Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton discovered this plot after the murder of John Pitcairn. He had also learned about Hickey’s counterfeit ring from Benjamin Tallmadge. Ratonhnhaké:ton went to New York and found the hideout where Hickey was staying; the latter fled, though the Assassin eventually caught up with him and tackled him to the ground. Both of them were arrested and sent to Bridewall Prison for counterfeiting.
Haytham and Lee moved Hickey to a different cell, one that wasn’t so close to Ratonhnhaké:ton’s. The Assassin managed to pickpocket the keys to his cell from one of the guards and tried to make his way to Hickey’s new cell in an attempt to murder him there but ended up finding the warden’s corpse. Ratonhnhaké:ton was ambushed by both Hickey and Lee, who revealed to Connor that he would be trialed and executed for the murder of the warden and also for attempting to assassinate Washington. Lee's plan not only framed the Assassin but allowed Hickey an opportunity to murder Washington, who would personally attend the execution.
Hickey escorted Ratonhnhaké:ton to the gallows after Haytham and Lee omitted the supposed trial. While being hanged, Ratonhnhaké:ton was rescued by the aid of the Assassins and his father (who shot the rope that was hanging him), forcing Hickey to make a desperate attempt to kill Washington as he rushed through the crowd. However, as Hickey attacked Washington's bodyguards, the Assassin was able to catch up and kill Hickey with his tomahawk.
In Real Life:
Thomas Hickey was a Continental Army soldier in the American Revolutionary War, and the first person executed for treason against what would become the United States.
Very little is known of Hickey’s early life save for that he was born in Ireland, and came to America as a soldier in the British Army. Hickey fought as personal assistant to Major General William Johnson in the Seven Years' War, but deserted to the other side when the Revolution broke out. He became part of the Life Guard, which protected General George Washington and his staff.
In the spring of 1776, Hickey and another soldier were arrested for passing counterfeit money. While incarcerated into Bridewell prison, Hickey revealed to another prisoner, Isaac Ketchum, that he was part of a wider conspiracy of soldiers who were prepared to defect to the British once the expected invasion came.
Hickey was arrested by civilian authorities and turned over to the Continental Army for trial. He was court-martialed and found guilty of mutiny and sedition and was hanged on June 28th, 1776 at the corner of Chrystie and Grand Streets before a crowd of 20,000 spectators in New York. Hickey was the only person put on trial for the conspiracy.
William Spohn Baker, the late-19th-century Washingtonian, believed that the real reason for his execution was involvement in a plot to kill or kidnap Washington. He stated, "Thomas Hickey, one of Washington's Guard, was tried by a court-martial and sentenced to death, being found implicated in a plot to murder the American general officers on the arrival of the British, or at best to capture Washington and deliver him to Sir William Howe. The plot had been traced to Governor Tryon, the mayor (David Mathews) having been a principal agent between him and the persons concerned in it."
After his death Thomas Hickey also made appearances in several other popular culture outlets, such as the children’s book Phoebe the Spy by Judith Berry Griffin, the AMC television series Turn: Washington's Spies, and is mentioned in the historical novel, Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson.
