I asked about a different one before but can you tell us about the Selfpub AU please?

OH BOY

I've been self-publishing erotica and romance novellas and novels if 60K counts as a novel sine 2013. I have several opinions on self-publishing in this genre. (There is a reason why I made Ed and Lucius self-publishers in my phone sex AU :D)

The concept of 'Ed is an experienced big name in his chosen career, Stede is a newbie who has dreamed about it for a long time and does weird shit' fits many modern AU concepts, but I think it fits self-publishing pretty well, because it's competitive and outside of the rules and traditions of traditional publishing. (And also, traditional publishing has barriers to non-white and/or queer people while those barriers are lower in self-publishing)

Ed as a Big Name Author in his genre with Izzy as his longterm co-author/editor/PR person, but also Ed is bored AF of writing the same tropey story book after book, because it's what his readers expect and readers get pissed if you deviate from genre expectations. People buy his books anyway! He hardly even needs to be there!

Stede, meanwhile, is an enthusiastic self-publishing newbie who makes all the classic mistakes, including but not limited to spending $$$ on a cover that is very pretty but completely wrong for his genre.

And then Ed and Stede meet and shenanigans and falling in love ensues, obv.

And also obviously, the rest of the Revenge crew is also involved in self-publishing somehow, with Lucius voicing several of my frustrations like 'get a fucking menage category, Amazon, stop letting the FFM writers clog up the lesbian erotica/romance categories'.

Excerpt where Ed is boggled by Stede's cover and blurb choices:

This cover, though, looks fine. A full moon over the open sea, a ship in the background and a shirtless, suitably hunky guy gazing moodily at the reader. It’s not a spectacular cover, but all the necessary elements are there and the title and author’s name are in a legible font. Whoever Autumn Arthurs is, they’re already ahead of a lot of other authors.

Sea Dogs isn’t a great title, but it gets the point across. Werewolves at sea, or by the coast. The hero is probably the standard ex-Marine with some psychological wounds for the heroine to heal while he saves her from some terrible situation or a villain.

Then Ed reads the blurb.

There is zero mention of werewolves or sad ex-Marines.

There are, however, pirates.

The blurb is far too long, but Ed still isn’t sure what the book is about. There’s a battle against the British, but the next paragraph mentions the Spanish. Names of different crew members are sprinkled throughout the blurb, and there’s at least eight of them.

Ed scrolls down to the four reviews, but while they give Sea Dogs four stars, the reviews are also confused by the plot, with one of them asking what happened to the werewolf pack from the previous book. A couple more clicks take Ed to the series’ page, Gentleman Pack, which is a terrible series name.

The first two books have a sunny, clear sky over the woods and cheerful-looking shirtless guys. Both blurbs mention wolf shifters and rival packs.

That does explain the surprise at the werewolf pack suddenly being gone in Sea Dogs.

It explains nothing about Autumn Arthurs’s decisions regarding their covers, or why they switched to a pirate adventure mid-series.

Hi! This is for the wip ask game… I humbly request literally anything from the charlieverse… loved the series and I am starving for more!!

Hey friend! I'm gonna go 'head and give you this 700ish word thing I wrote for a Whumpuary 2023 prompt "failed escape / nightmares." I like it but I've never really found a spot for it within the larger story, so it's been sitting in my google drive for a while. CW for blood/gore.

She was running, running through her family's home, and she could swear the back door was this way, but the hallways just kept going. She kept popping out into the main hall, and every time she did more people were looking at her, reaching for her. The third time she sprinted through the main hall a couple people grabbed at her, but the blood covering her bare arms made her slippery, so she wrenched herself free and kept searching desperately for an exit.

She turned a corner and found herself in the pantry, how on earth did she get to the pantry, and her father's pale corpse slumped crooked against the shelf, blood still oozing slowly from his neck. His pale eyes gazed out, empty and yet somehow still full of rage. Charlie tried to back out of the pantry without turning her back on the corpse, but several, no dozens, no hundreds of hands were on her, crushing her arms, her legs, her stomach, her throat. She tried to scream but couldn't take a breath in. She thrashed against the hands that were digging bruises into her flesh. Someone was calling her name.

The scene changed and she was standing on the deck of the Revenge, a uniformed firing squad taking aim at her chest. "For the crime of murder," a voice came from somewhere above, "You, Charlotte Walker, are sentenced to death." Charlie strained helplessly against the ties binding her wrists. 

Someone was shaking her. Someone was calling her name. She pushed and punched against whatever was in front of her. 

"Fuck's sake Charlie, wake up!" Charlie opened her eyes to a blur of grey beard and pale, scarred skin. In that same instant she gained control of her body and brought one knee up to connect with whatever it was that was shaking her. There was a grunt of pain and Izzy Hands stopped shaking her to curl around his gut, where her knee had just connected quite soundly. 

“Oh fuck,” Charlie croaked through tears, reaching now for him with open hands instead of the fist she had been aiming in his direction. “Shit, shit, I’m sorry –”

He stopped her with a firm hand to the center of her chest, holding her at bay while he breathed deeply and held his stomach. Charlie watched him with wide eyes and tried to remember where she was and why she was waking up next to the first mate. The events of the afternoon came back to her in a rush. The quiet lunch, his hand brushing against hers on the table, her thigh pressing against his under the table. Going up to his rented room – oh that’s where she was, okay, she knew where she was. Over Izzy’s bare shoulder, the window showed the last red rays of sunset.

Now that the man was uncurling and breathing normally, Charlie placed her hand over his where it pressed against her breastbone. “I’m so sorry, I don’t usually have nightmares like that, I thought you were attacking me –”

“It’s fine,” Izzy sighed, opening his eyes to speak. The golden-brown color of them was mesmerizing in the light of dusk that came in through the window. “And yes, you do have nightmares like that, quite frequently in fact.” 

She wiped her eyes on the sleeve of her shirt – Izzy’s shirt? Whatever shirt she was wearing. “What are you talking about?” 

“At least as long as I’ve been on the Revenge, you have two or three a week. With the screaming, anyway.” He shrugged.

“What – why doesn’t anyone ever wake me up?” Charlie demanded. 

“I was told the first and only time someone tried that, Frenchie got socked in the nose,” Izzy said, “After that they decided to let you sleep through them.” He absentmindedly brushed his fingers through her hair, sending tingles down Charlie’s spine. It stopped all thought for a moment, until his words sunk in.

“I punched Frenchie? Oh my god,” she rolled onto her back, away from Izzy’s touch, and covered her face with her hands. “No wonder they all treat me like their little sister, I’m having nightmares in the group sleeping area.” 

“Oh, you love being the little sister,” Izzy drawled. She removed her hands from her face to glare over at him. 

"I take back my apology for hitting you," she sniffed. He rolled his eyes.

Looks like this one had by far the most intriguing working title, since @shoegazy-pie also asked about it here! 😊 You can read the fic description there, and then come back here for a second snippet!

The fic is mostly Ed/Lucius (Lucius/Stede and proper Gentlescribed to come in future sequels, I plan it as a trilogy of short fics), but I thought you'd enjoy this little bit of Lucius and Izzy banter:

Lucius rolled his eyes as he swiveled to face the angry little gremlin man. “You know, you can call me Lucius. Pretty much the only people who call people they actually know by their last name are, like… jocks. Well, and military guys and cops, but that’s just cause that's who the jocks are imitating with their macho fucking bullshit. And, let’s be real, Jim’s occasional drag excursions aside, no one here qualifies as a jock. Well—” He pursed his lips thoughtfully. “The Swede runs a lot. But the track and fielders are always kinda different from, like, the normal jocks, don’t you think?”  “Whatever,” Izzy grumped.  Predictably. The man was basically a flesh and blood Oscar. He just needed a fucking trash can.  “Blackbeard has requested your services,”  Izzy said, clearly forcing each word out through gritted teeth.  Lucius raised an eyebrow. “My services? As a friend? A notary? As a personal assistant? Or as a personal… something else?”  Izzy glared at him, clearly triggered at the mention of Lucius’ other revenue stream.  The SWERFy hypocrite. As if a drug dealer had any business putting up his nose at some cam work and a little light hooking.

how it started: OFMD was fun, i liked more about it than i disliked, but I'm probably never going to come back to it now I'm watched it

how it continued: people who are attracted to izzy hands are deranged (affectionate, but confused) but some of them are amazing writers and they're not wrong that he's a deeply traumatised questionably-canonically-queer liar, and that does describe pretty much every character I get invested in these days

how it's currently going: I am halfway through writing a scene were stede accidentally asks izzy hands if he's a dom and izzy laughs so hard he cries at the concept that he might ever top anyone and then threatens to murder stede if he ever tells anyone that he's capable of laughing.

Temporal Lobe (auditory, emotion, memory) - What is their most emotionally poignant childhood memory? (good or bad)

Not so much a childhood memory, but an adolescent one. I think Lara's most emotionally intense memory was losing her mother. Though I never go into detail with it on the page, in my head, she was there holding her hand when she died in hospice after a long, long battle with cancer. It's the most intense grief she's ever experienced and probably the most distinct emotional memory she has.

Occipital Lobe (vision) - What do they consider the most beautiful thing to look at? (e.g. colors, scenery, a person)

Lara appreciates many forms of beauty. Honestly if I had to pick just one specific thing I would say the human form? She is a ballerina, and never tires of not only dance, but of all the ways a human body can move and what shapes it can take. You know those awesome photos of ballerinas in nude-colored leotards that make them look almost naked and you can see every muscle and bend in really cool poses and mid-dance?? Yeah, that's probably peak beauty for her. There's fire also, but that's a little spoilery 😶

The song has had such a chokehold on me eve since I was a tiny dweeb in the single digits lol. My mom was a big fan of Alicia keys so one thing led to another and till this day I’m obsessed with the song.

I think I first thought of the idea last august when we were in New York and something within me just clicked lol. Chan as a rising rapper trying to make a name for himself and y/n as a struggling college student. I still don’t know how but they will meet and baam.

favorite movie trilogy of all time: Honestly I also have to say Lord of the Rings. I mean, I also can’t even think of anything else, but lotr would definitely beat anything else. I actually just finished a fellowship rewatch last night! What can I say, those movies are just perfect.

name of the main character in the last book you read/are currently reading: I’m in desperate need of a new book right now, but I just finished ‘I Kissed Alice’, which surprisingly, does not actually star an Alice! (Technically). There were two main characters - Rhodes and Iliana.

favorite color combination: hmmm that’s hard, I don’t really think about color combos? 🤔 I have to say I’m a big fan of anything involving teal as an accent.. like, brown and teal, black/grey and teal… so good… And personally I think crimson and gold is just always a classic win. Also, any kind of warm/sunset color palettes! I’m so weak for that. 🤌

most common craving: probably chocolate or any sweet candies, and also salty snacks, as far as what I end up hunting my pantry for the most. I’m very weak for any baked goods as well and will jump at any chance to make warm, gooey brownies or chocolate chip cookies!

favorite word: bro hell if I know.. probably not my favorite word (because how could you possibly chose???) but the first thing that popped into my head was ‘languid’. I love that word, it has such a nice mental image - especially bc it sounds like ‘liquid’ which idk, I just like a lot. And yet I always seem to have a hard time working it into my writing…

word count of the last writing piece you worked on: well, if we’re counting the notes I frantically jotted down last night to make sure I didn’t forget any bits of the scenes I had in my head, then 834 words 😂. (That one’s a small Izzy fic about him getting wounded but it’s slowly turning into a full on steddy hands fic against my will, please send help 😭). But! If we’re just focusing on like, actual full writing and not just half-written dialogue, then we have my other Izzy-centric WIP which is 1,964 words so far. Not bad at all by my standards! 😌 (That is, considering the longest thing I’ve even posted on AO3 was only 1,130 words).

current obsession: I mean… do I even need to say it😔😔….. Besides just my horrible little man though, I’m currently obsessed with practicing stylization in my art! Like, trying to figure out what shapes I can make people into to make everything more fun and dynamic, and how to distinguish characters from each other with those shapes. It’s very different from what I normally do, so it’s super fun to explore! Even if I don’t really know what I’m doing as of yet 😅
