Jiang Cheng is such an icon.
No, 'cuz like– what is everybody else's reaction to fucked up shit happening in their lives?
Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji after their most important person dies? Hide the fuck away from society. Wei Wuxian? Also hide away from society but with a healthy dose of denial. Or, you know, dying. Jin Guangyao? Sweep everything under a rug and hide behind a smile until the rug becomes a mountain. Other characters? They simply Die. Quite tragically might I add *side eyes Yi city*
What does Jiang Cheng do instead? He puts his big boy pants on and rebuilds his sect while half-raising another sect's heir, and basically successfully giving the biggest fuck you to the cultivation world (and his dad let's be real). Does he move on? No. Does that stop him? Fuck no.
He's one of the most dramatic people there, and yet he has absolutely no time for anybody's bullshit. Jiang Cheng would tell Lan Xichen "boo fucking hoo, your dear murderer got what was coming to him, now stop moping and go lead your damn sect so I don't have to see Hanguang-jun's face in every meeting" and think he was helping.
Jiang Cheng's method of dealing with trauma is simply saying "it happened, i'm alive and got shit to do" and I feel that.

U kno I had to grind so Alex could defend her gf 😡
The little details we know about merulas parents.. like we know they were bad people but at least it seems like merulas mom actually loved her 🥺 and I’ve noticed we never hear about what her dad was like
Also verucca obviously does not like her niece. Which we knew already lmao but she also doesn’t seem to have viewed her sister/sister-in-law(?) in the best way either.
Tumblr media
It makes me wonder if that dislike of her mother is the reason verucca takes it out on merula? Not that verucca needs a reason she seems terrible and cold and prob just hates kids lmao

Fandom Gripe #13: this thing where Jiang Cheng-positive fics like to write off his homophobia and abusive possessiveness over Wei Wuxian as “abandonment issues” is delusional almost to the point of hilarity, because exactly how do you read a man using the death of his family to justify serial murdering innocent people as “abandonment issues”? And mind you, the first person he murders in his 13 (or 16 for the drama, I guess) years of serial killing is the man these fics claim is “his brother,” and everyone he murders after are people who remind him of his “brother” lmao
Double whammy when the fic in question doesn’t include the fall of Lotus Pier happening, so the Jiang family are all still alive, meaning jc has nothing to feel “abandoned” over except maybe his terrible mother. Triple whammy when said terrible mother is rewritten to just be a tough girlboss mommy who secretly deep down loves her children (and the orphan she still abuses, as per the fic LOL), meaning jc now absolutely has no reason to have abandonment issues as per the fic, itself.
(Also, the hoops these fics will go through to explain why jc’s “abandonment issues” only encompass wwx living his life outside of Lotus Pier but not Jiang Yanli marrying into the Jin, so now we have misogyny as a narrative crutch, yay! Maybe if dude was canonically a good person able to make friends outside of them being gifted to him by his father, he wouldn’t feel so “lonely” being surrounded by and in charge of a whole bunch of people his age, and his stans wouldn’t have to argue that jyl isn’t a “real Jiang” since she’s marrying out. Just a thought 🙃)

the thing about jiang cheng is that he is Always needing wei wuxians attention, even as their relationship devolves and he descends into anger and resentment. they are attached at the hip as teenagers, never one without the other, and when things start to fall apart jiang cheng is simply grasping to hold onto his brother. the older sect leaders insight and nurture jiang chengs growing resentment, and the pleads for wei wuxians attention almost become retribution for what he views as wei wuxians wrong doings - as payment for pulling away he demands wei wuxian look at him, even if it means a fight. but upon wei wuxians resurrection, after 16 years of bitter loneliness and after his anger has had plenty of time to fester, jiang cheng craves the same obsessive inseparability from their youth. but he's bitter and he's angry and he's full of grief, so instead of affection jiang cheng demends wei wuxians anger, insisting on fighting Every time they come in contact post resurrection. he wants for wei wuxians undivided attention and devotion but he's so angry that he can't let himself want wei wuxian to love him, so he asks for the next best thing - for wei wuxian to be dragged down into his terrible anger with him

look i know why mx/tx did the whole ancestral hall fiasco bc she needed something to lead into golden core reveal or whatever but imagine how much more romantic it would've been if l.wj took w.wx to the lan ancestral hall, for lw.j to introduce w.wx to his mother?
cause 1. it wouldnt have made them look like disrespectful assholes and 2. it would've shown us the true depth of lw.j's love and devotion to w.wx, even during his death. i so desperately want post-13yrs l.wj to have SOME type of character/personality beyond attack dog and blind idol worship via parasocial delusions

Fandom is so nice to Jiang Cheng's inferiority complex because in reality every single thing he gets accused of is something Wei Wuxian is better at than him.
Jiang Cheng killed Wei Wuxian? Nope. Didn't even get close. Wei Wuxian's own spirits tore him apart before jc could even get there. wwx:1 jc:0
Jiang Cheng tortures people? We get two and a half rumours and a mention from jin ling that jc has 'captured' demonic cultivators before, but who is also apparently confident that just letting wwx run off will kill the issue even though those earlier rumours said ~no one who sandu shengshou captured was ever seen again~
The word jiang cheng uses when he tries to talk big game about 'beating the truth' out of Wei Wuxian's is a word that carries the context of pestering someone to do their homework. Doesn't exactly strike fear into my heart.
Wei Wuxian? Excellent at torture. A prodigy. Did you fucking see what he did to Wen Chao? Dude didn't have fingers anymore because wei wuxian made him eat them. He ripped out his hair, burned his skin off, and then stalked him for several days just to prolong the pain. He forced Wang Lingjiao to bite Wen Chao's dick off and then made her shove a stool leg down her own throat! 10/10, no notes. Absolutely horrifying.
Meanwhile Jiang Cheng's idea of torture is getting a dog to bark at Wei Wuxian for a few seconds. Weak, unoriginal, I bet fairy was literally wagging her tail the whole time. 2-0
Jiang Cheng made the entire cultivation world believe Wei Wuxian was up to no good on the burial mounds and ultimately orchestrated his downfall? lol. lmao, even
It's a big thing in certain corners of the fandom to really zoom in one one particular phrase at the end of chapter 73, where after wwx and jc have their staged duel to make the world believe they hate each other jiang cheng tells everyone wwx has defected and become "a public enemy'' or "an enemy to the cultivation world" or whatever the translation you're familiar with decided upon.
(As an aside, something I really like about this line is that the last half of it is almost exactly the same, like verbatim, as what wwx told him to say. like, the chapter is really hammering home just how much jc is speaking from a script here. wwx tells jc to say "今后魏无羡无论做出什么事,都与云梦江氏无关." and jc says "今后无论此人有何动作,一概与云梦江氏无关" the only meaningful difference is that he says 'this person' instead of wwx's name)
I've seen it said that this bit, the use of 'enemy' was said without wei wuxian's approval, that jc deviated from the script just to hurt his ex-shixiong for leaving him. And that this is what caused all the other clans to turn against wei wuxian. Regardless of if this is what jc and wwx discussed, or if jc had malicious motivations for it (considering my conclusions above, you can guess where i fall) it doesn't really matter, because the novel tells us when the clans completely freak out and become convinced wei wuxian is out to get them (though of course they've been wringing their hands about it since the literal day wwx ran off with the wen, months before jiang cheng visited) very neatly in chapter 75!
Tumblr media
It's when they find out about Wen Ning.
And how do they find out about Wen Ning?
Because Wei Wuxian took him on nighthunts! And they kicked ass!
...Wei Wuxian, my man, why are you on nighthunts??? Why are you showing off your incredibly cool sentient fierce corpse buddy, who is way better and stronger than all the other fierce corpses, in front of the whole cultivation world??
Whatever his motivations (extra money, maybe?? they were strapped for crash) I can only draw the conclusion wwx had already given up on appearing calm or non-threatening and didn't care if the clans thought he was a threat, because they'd believe whatever they wanted anyway. Which he seems to clearly be aware of the whole time.
Regardless, we know that this is what created the myth of the Yiling patriarch. It's literally when the title first shows up!
Even if you really believe jc was secretly plotting against wwx in chapter 73, he's clearly doing a shit job of it because nothing he said made anywhere near as big an impact as this. Flopped!
The other point people use to argue Jiang Cheng caused wei wuxian's downfall is Jin Guangyao's speech in Guanyin temple about how jiang cheng could have saved wei wuxian if only he stood by him. Setting aside that jin guangyao is trying to get into jiang cheng's head here, and isn't necessarily saying what he really believes (though it very well might be! who knows with a character like jgy. assuming he's always lying is just as misleading as assuming he's always saying the truth) the fact is, if you read the speech closely, what he's talking about is not the 'public enemy' line, he's talking about the bond between them. The fact that people wanted wei wuxian out of yunmeng jiang, because the two were too powerful together.
He's talking about that one time Jiang Cheng very publically kicked wei wuxian out of the sect!
Which, unbeknownst to Jin Guangyao, was in fact Wei Wuxian's idea the whole time.
final score: 3 for you wei wuxian, you go wei wuxian! And nothing for Jiang Cheng bye.

jiang cheng ships by whether they're about wei wuxian or not
Tumblr media
our boy wwx's protagonist halo is more like a gravitational field in his effect on jc's emotional development. he probably didn't, like, invent jiang cheng's abandonment issues, but he certainly made them worse! so here are jiang cheng ships grouped by whether or not they're actually about wei wuxian. the ones in the middle could go either way.
definitely about wei wuxian:
chengxian: obvious. wei wuxian is literally there.
zhancheng: obvious. they're both obsessed with wei wuxian.
ningcheng: obvious. they're both wei wuxian's horrible/beloved science experiments/little brothers and neither of them are normal about it. to be fair, wei wuxian is also not normal about it, thus the science experiments.
definitely not about wei wuxian:
mingcheng: I think this is more about theoretical temperamental compatibility and letting jiang cheng date a hot male authority figure who at least kind of approves of him.
sangcheng: I think this is in some ways often about giving jiang cheng a human who is *not* obsessed with wei wuxian. like, give jiang cheng his own bf who can be into him on his own merits.
chengyao: they're coworkers! they're inadvertent coparents! they're both wildly competent and also incredibly bitchy if the situation calls for it! if anything this is about jin ling instead.
chengyi: I don't know what this is about other than getting jiang cheng a boytoy. I don't rightly know that he would want one of those but why not! get down with your bad selves!
could go either way, Schrödinger's wei wuxian:
chengqing: this one I wasn't sure about because actually a lot of writers are pretty careful to make chengqing actually about them but wei wuxian got up in there with great determination and made that threesome happen (wen qing's hands, wei wuxian and jiang cheng's holes... surgical holes... I regret this already). hard to totally extract him from the dynamic after that. the wei wuxian must be contended with. depends on when in the timeline it happens and what canon you're working from, since cql made it canon pre-surgery.
xicheng: this is less likely to explicitly be about wei wuxian and more likely to be structurally about wei wuxian. not only does it make them match (twin prides dating the twin jades) but the brothers-dating-brothers situation ties them tightly to wangxian from multiple directions. in other words, if it's about wei wuxian it's because it sort of re-joins them as family through a different method. if he's not your "real" brother, becoming an in-law is fine?
disclaimer: I acknowledge it is possible to, for example, write a zhancheng fic which is not about wei wuxian, I'm not saying you can't! through the power of AU all things are possible, etc. but you have to actively remove him from the dynamic, because canon embeds him there very deeply, vs. something like chengyao, where they have a totally separate relationship (via jin ling- and their working relationship).

trapped without escape scenario. jc and lwj. only one living person can leave. jc argues that because his sect will be fine w/o him, and jl is doing well, it should be lwj bec. wwx needs him.
and lwj has to talk him into a compromise where jc drowns him, drags him out and then revives him. bec. wwx will not be fine w/o jc alive in this world. this is asking a lot from lwj bc. jc is doubtful. lwj has to recount almost every instance of wwx longly talking about jc. this is made more terrible than it already is because at some point, jc tries to reassure him that wwx clearly is totally gone on lwj and much happier with him than he ever was in jc's company. this is uncomfortable because jc is so clearly hurt by wwx's avoidance and so earnestly happy that wwx has found happiness. lwj has had a very clear one-dimensional picture of jc in his head for over a decade and now jc is doing things that are not one-dimensional, don't fit what lwj has taken as truth for almost half his life and lwj doesn't enjoy this.
eventually, lwj is gently drowned (they put him to sleep first bec. jc insists that drowning is traumatic), dragged out of the trap and then revived via mouth to mouth resuscitation and gentle zappings of zidian. jc then proceeds to carry him out of the trap and choke the people who sprung the trap to death. lwj groggily approves of jc telling them that they were fools to try and go after wwx via them, jc even thinks of asking after the people who set this plan into motion. jc then takes lwj to an inn where jc takes care of lwj who, to his dawning horror, realizes that wwx and jc are similar in their bedside manner.
eventually, jc takes lwj back to cloud recess where wwx is already worrying and ready to fuss over him. jc, in spite of everything lwj has told him, is going to quietly leave. never saying anything! which is why lan wangji is forced to invite him in for tea. (this invitation is incredibly awkward and truly unfortunately phrased but it clearly costs lan wangji so much to extend this olive branch that jiang cheng can't refuse.) wwx has no idea what is going on but somehow jc and lwj are getting almost along?

I'm going to come out and say that the more I re-read MDZS the more I actually HATE WWX.
I know he's a protag so everything is supposed to be about "poor me I've done nothing wrong" but I can't stand those types of people. He would be a person where if he existed in real life I would not be able to be around him.
I've actually become more of a Jiang Cheng apologist (actually, no, because that implies that he's ever done anything wrong).
I read through all the main points and here are a few things that piss me off. Please add on if I missed something:
WWX is obviously favored by JFM and if JC brings up this concern, all WWX says is: "no he doesn't lol you're so silly I'm not his son" TBH WWX wasn't his child but JFM had a son and it wasn't JC
Golden Core transfer. Need I say less (and fuck you Wen Ning for saying JC didn't deserve the core and the power he had wasnt actually his. He cultivated it for YEARS to get it to where it is today. It is NOT WWXs core anymore. Fuck all yall)
WWX defecting from YMJ and going with the Wens when JC had NOTHING. No sect, no support, no family. He's a new sect leader and has no resources or money to do anything or go against anyone. And thanks WWX for defending the people that, you know, massacred his family but whatever. (I understand they were innocent but still, I can tell it would really hurt JC)
Along with the defecting, WWX and LWJ broke into Lotus Pier and BOWED TO MADAM YU AND JFM WITHOUT JCs APPROVAL. DISRESPECTFUL AS HELL I KNOW WHY JC WAS PISSED. WWX had NO RIGHT to be there after everything he had done.
WWX tells JC to leave everything in the past. As usual, he is running away and not accepting any consequences for the many, many, things he's done wrong. If I were JC, I would permanently ban him from Lotus Pier and kill on sight because if he wants to leave things in the past, then that includes WWX.
Lastly, WWX never once defends JC. Whether it be against LWJ, Wen Ning, or other people that say terrible shit to him because they're being petty. Not once does he come to his defense.
To end my rant, WWX is actually a very terrible person (and so is Lan Wangji. Fight me) with no sense and I finally realized it after re reading the book multiple times. Come at me if you want but this is my honest opinion and I get why JC is such an ass because BITCH ME TOO GET OUT OF MY HOUSE.
Hopefully I have some support here but I also know I'm going to get some hate.

They say you and your comfort character share a lot of characteristics.
While not as bad as JC, life’s been kicking me in the metaphorical balls recently with a close family member receiving a bad medical diagnosis on Monday, citizenship processing time jumping from 9 months to 22 months forcing me to apply for another PR card on Tuesday, insurance denying a medical claim even though they’ve already approved it and I have it in writing, on Wednesday and the cherry on top of this ‘what in the wattpad’ sundae, me having to pretend to be my friend’s fake boyfriend to get her out of an arranged marriage, on Thursday >.<

(Likely) hot take: Opposites
Ok I kinda wanted to put this in a separate post, so here it is:
A curious observation I saw some people make, is that although Neteyam is the golden child of the family that obeys orders, it’s not what a child should ideally be at his age. A parent’s goal is to guide a kid into becoming a person who can think for themselves and make decisions on their own, which Lo’ak did because he needed to save his brothers (mind you, none of the Sullies knew how Spider was being treated. If not for Miles, he would have been dead by now.), while ‘Teyam ONLY joined him bc he had to fulfill a protector role for his sibling. Until that, he was totally ok with being passive, and that’s kind of what sealed his fate in this franchise. Neteyam is a good guy, a good brother, and a good character, but he is not proactive unless his family is directly involved or unless his parents command him something. The ONLY act of rebellion we see Neteyam perform is in high ground, when he sneaks on a starship against his parents’ wishes, but again, only because his parents are there.
In that way, Spider is his total opposite. I called him “Lo’ak on steroids” before, but it’s not completely accurate, since Lo’ak is still dependent on his family and approval of his parents. His acts of rebellion are usually more for rebellion’s sake and less because he sees what he’s doing as right, although he made up for it when saving Spider and warning Payakan. Spider is everything Netyeam isn’t. He is unloved, orphaned, outcasted, but also completely and utterly independent, used to lack of affection, disapproval and therefore feels confident to swim against the tide. Socorro has no qualms about making his own decisions and carving a path for himself, even if he’s met with pushback from Jake himself (like when Sully asks Spider to give himself over to the RDA, and the kid proceeds to quickly put him in his place by stating that although he doesn’t possess a Na’vi body, he belongs on Pandora as much as Jake does.), so is it really a surprise that he was the character that JC chose to keep alive for the sequels?
(Ngl tho, I would have loved to see Neteyam go through an arc where he grows to be independent as well; Spider could have definitely taught him that if they both stayed alive.)
