Summary: What they drink when they go out partying or just attending social functions! Also, how they got introduced to alcohol in the first place!

a/n: General headcanons, but these characterizations are primarily for my upcoming Jean Kirstein x Reader fic! I will upload some WIP for the fic soon because I need to be held accountable to keep writing (help me, haha). Slight toxic masculinity from Eren and Jean?

Jean:

When he first started drinking, it started with skimming the top of his dad’s liquor before sneaking out to a house party. He watered down some rum before buying some coke at a corner store. Since then, it has been his go-to (and beer, specifically a corona). He doesn’t like ‘jungle juice’ concoctions, no matter how much Connie shoves them down his throat. However, he once went clubbing with your friends, and Connie convinced him to try this cocktail (lime mojito). At first, he was apprehensive, but he was like, “How fucking drunk can this chick drink get me?” and took a sip. Jean got belligerent that night that he didn’t know how many he ordered because it was so good. His credit card company sent him a message asking if his card had been stolen, and he had to explain that it was not a series of suspicious purchases. He is now a massive advocate for fancy cocktails (ESPECIALLY AN ESPRESSO MARTINI), so he’ll splurge on that when he’s out drinking. I can see him getting into whisky when he’s older. A lover of vodka soda, too.

Eren:

At a wedding when he was younger, his dad offered him a tequila shot (his mom found out and got mad later), and it caused him to vomit so badly that he didn’t drink again until his last year of high school. Eren is a huge beer drinker and ONLY A BEER DRINKER. (Or so he says). He is not very particular about brands, although he likes things more ‘hoppy’ to feel like a man. Eren is the kind of guy to get mad at you for not knowing how to pour beer properly and getting more foam than anything. He won’t admit it, but he had some sips of the lime mojito Jean was having. He got drunk and was over the moon. Eren tried other cocktails, but besides a Long Island iced tea, he’s not a huge fan of other cocktails. When he gets really drunk at the club (he's a lightweight but does a really good job of concealing how inebriated he is), he and Connie will coerce Jean into buying a STUPID AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL TO GET A TABLE (see Jean's suspicious credit card purchases). Think $50 Mango Ciroc and Patron!

Connie:

When he went on a family cruise at the age of nine, he ordered a “Shirley Temple” (virgin), and he was “drunk.” Fast forward to a shitty date he went on; he ordered a Shirley Temple again. Connie got belligerent, and his date had to take him home. He did not hear from her again. This man is a nut. He loves cocktails so much that he bought a cocktail kit, but he barely measures, so it’s just 90% alcohol and 10% any discernable flavour profile. Connie is the kind of friend who mixes you a drink and says: "It's mostly juice! Just Try it!" but it straight up tastes like pure gasoline. He’ll happily drink anything else but prefers cocktails and mixed drinks over beer, shots, etc. Connie is the type of guy to order “Blow Job” shots as a joke but then gets way drunker than everyone. Surprisingly, he’s a huge Reisingling fan. Unsurprisingly, he and Sasha got blackout at your birthday party after downing half a bottle of Pink Whitney (they snuck away to take turns throwing up in the guest washroom).

Reiner:

Huge whiskey nut and wine snob. He’ll talk your ear off about various wines he’s into, and he actually knows what he’s talking about. Reiner is the kind of guy who will bring a bottle of wine to a friend's birthday dinner, and he gets it RIGHT! He’ll drink beer (not particular about the brand). He only started drinking when he was legal, so there’s no crazy story other than the one time he and Bertolt went to a daytime wine tasting, and by the time they sobered up, it was nighttime, and they were 45 minutes outside of the city. Most times, if Reiner is in a work setting, he’ll drink what other people are drinking, too (but he’ll opt for a vodka seltzer). He’s tried cocktails before, but he’s not a fan.

Armin:

He hates beer. His grandfather offered him a swig when he kept looking at him, and he never drank again until he was legal. This man is a cider fan, and no one can tell me otherwise. Specifically blackberry and green apple. Armin enjoys wine (red > white) and will listen to Reiner babble on about the best ones. But his drink of choice is a bit pricey: champagne! But if he’s at a party, he’ll just settle for drinking a vodka cranberry. He mentioned to Connie that he likes “Shirley Temples” ONCE, and whenever they all go out, Connie will buy him one. Armin is too shy to decline, so he'll take a couple sips before giving it to either Eren or Jean (they will fight amongst themselves as to who gets to finish it).

Thank you for addressing Jean and Reiner's final panels! These feel like such gross caricatures of who they've been, how far they've come, and the dignity they've earned as they've aged and held onto throughout the series.

There were so many better, in-character ways to show Jean and Reiner having a chill, even superficial moment surrounded by the people they're able to trust most in this world.

Reducing them to this is so embarrassing and I'm just gonna pretend these panels never happened.

But anyways, I'm glad we're glad we're talking about it as a fandom.

My nature is to find a silver lining in most things. All I can say here is that the gross caricatures (as you so perfectly put it) do not define them. It’s not who they are. It doesn’t erase their 138 pages of development. Like you, I’m pretending they don’t exist. I’ll take the spirit of the panels, acknowledge they are happy and together, and be satisfied with that.

modern au

eren jaeger doesn’t want to judge you but he does. he lectures on why they’re bad for you. he’s totally hypocritical though because you know that boy is clutching cool mint vape. when you point that out, he shuts up.

armin arlert is thrown off when you light one up. he asks when you started and how long you’ve been smoking for. he doesn’t like your vice, but he won’t stop you. he hopes that you’ll quit.

connie springer doesn’t smoke cigarettes, however, he thinks it makes you look extremely cool. he says it reminds him of a cool guy in a movie. not a big fan of the smell and is definitely the type to cough obnoxiously loud if you light one up next to him.

jean kirstein is sort of impressed with you, at first. he didn’t think you had it in you to smoke. jeans a habitual smoker too so often times you’d go out together to have one. eventually, he thinks that you should stop.

reiner braun HATES the fact that you’re a smoker. he hates the smell, the way it makes the air feel and he mostly hates how bad it is for you. he whines whenever you light one up. “seriously, right now?”

bertholdt hoover doesn’t really care. it’s your choice and it’s your body. plus, he’s smoked a few during his rebellious phase. also, totally smokes them when he drinks because drunk cigarettes don’t count.

marco bodt wishes you wouldn’t. he’s really supportive about it though. he knows it annoys you so he doesn’t tell you to quit, he just kinda looks at you and it says it all. he wishes jean would quit too.

sasha braus thinks they’re stinky. she doesn’t mind if you light one up around her, she just wants to stand a few feet away from you so the wind doesn’t blow the smoke towards her.

mikasa ackerman doesn’t really care either. she used to smoke them back when she was really angsty but she quit. she also doesn’t give a fuck if quit or not. also, would totally judge what type you smoke.

ymir’s a smoker. she thought it was cool when she was younger and then winded up getting addicted. she’s always got cigarettes on her and you two often wind up sharing each others. always has a lighter on her.

historia reiss despises smoking. there isn’t one thing she likes about it. she thinks you look like an idiot and she’s sure to let you know.

annie leonhardt often asks to bum one. she really doesn’t give a shit what you do. “smoke them or don’t.” she’s glad you always have one when she needs one though.

Synopsis

Mikasa is bedridden after injuries, and, despite her pain tolerance and ability to heal quickly, she is compelled to rest until she is fully healed. But she certainly doesn’t mind a certain member of her squad waiting on her hand and foot.

It hadn’t even been an hour, and the tall sandy-blond young man was already making his way to her room. Mikasa had been in bed long enough to be able to recognize his footsteps as he walked down the hallway, so she had about 10 seconds to prepare herself until he walked in.

He always opened the door as quietly as he could, hesitating to walk in until her silence confirmed he could. The first few times he did it, she thought it was strange.

Earlier that day, though, she realized it was an act out of respect for boundaries.

And how could she ignore that?

“I thought you might need some more water,” he said, carefully inching into the room.

Mikasa sat up, peering at the empty glass by her bed before she looked up at the full one he was holding. She nodded and began to sit up.

Jean put the water down on her bed side table, then reached over to lift her pillow so she could lean back more comfortably. He half expected her to take the pillow from him so she could do it herself, but she didn’t object in any way. When she was first put into the infirmary, she was too weak to do anything herself. But now that she was regaining her health, rather quickly too, Jean was waiting for the moment she would tell him she didn’t need him to do anything for her anymore.

He really underestimated himself. Mikasa appreciated his help more than he could ever know.

“Thank you, Jean,” she said, causing him to suddenly stop and look at her curiously. “You didn’t need to do this all for me, and I know it’s not convenient for you.”

Jean could feel how hard his heart was pounding in his chest. “Well... I want to make sure you’re better as soon as possible.” He hoped that was convincing enough. He hated caring for her without her knowing it’s because it keeps him up at night knowing she’s not in good shape. He hated only being able to see her the few times a day he came to bring her food and water to make sure she’s nourished enough.

He hated loving her without being able to tell her so.

It wasn’t that he got nervous around her, it was because he had a job to do. They all had jobs to do. They couldn’t afford distractions when the world as they knew it could end at any moment.

Mikasa didn’t respond to what he said, and an uncomfortable amount of silence dragged on before Jean finally decided to break it.

“It’s my fault you’re here,” he said.

In that moment, Mikasa finally realized why he had been so ardent on taking care of her for the days she’d been here. He blamed himself for her getting hurt, even though she was the one who took her eyes off her target for one second before getting shot. She didn’t blame him one bit, and her stunned expression at his statement said it all.

He avoided eye contact with her, but she watched him sit down at the bench by her bed, placing one of his hands on the mattress. His mind went somewhere else, and he seemed to forget where he was.

Mikasa reached over so she could place her hand on his. When they touched, Jean snapped out of whatever trance he was in, and he looked up at her.

“Can you stay?” She asked.

Jean placed his other hand on top of hers, holding it gently. A soft and wholesome smile crept its way onto his face, replacing his melancholic expression from earlier.

“You really want me to?”

She nodded. “I want you to tell me why you keep putting yourself in danger for me.”

Jean’s cheeks became slightly rosy. “You really wanna know why?” He looked down at her hand for a bit, lightly stroking it with his thumb as he reflected on what he was about to answer. He looked up at her once again, a look of affection on his face that he had never given anyone before. “Because it’s you.”

“Me?”

“Mhm,” he assured. “It was always you.”
