Hello, I have a weird question but maybe you can answer it. When I was a teenager I was gifted a yukata and taught to tie the obi to make it look like a bow. That was cute then, but now that I'm in my mid 30s I wonder if this is still appropriate. Are there other ways to tie the obi of a yukata that are maybe a bit more mature ? I love wearing my yukata, but I'm starting to get self-conscious about maybe being too old for that… (I only wear it for matsuri in Japan so it's not like it's often, but it makes me even more self-conscious because I am very clearly not Japanese so I don't want to look ridiculous.) Thank you !

Though nothing truly forbids you to keep wearing bunko musubi, if you don't feel confortable with a bow knot or its variations (for ex. this one or this one?), don't despair! there are many (like MANY) other knots which would work with your age and "status" :D
If you wish for something classical, I'd recommend:
Kai no kuchi musubi (clam mouth knot) - a super all purpose knot, worn by women and men alike. It's been around for ages and never went out of style!
Ronin musubi (ronin knot) or katabasami - unisex knots that have been around for a long time too, pretty sturdy and chic.
Karuta musubi (card knot) - easy to tie and quite flat so perfect if you have to ride a car/train or sit on Western chairs.
Taiko musubi (drum knot) or tsunodashi musubi (also called Ginza musubi) - you can fake those ones (usually tied with wider obi) with a hanhaba obi, see examples here and here.
More on the novelty side :
Kamifusen musubi (paper balloon knot) - a more whimsical knot but could still work depending on your style. It asks for preparation but it's very cute :)
Neko mimi musubi (cat ears knot) - there are many variations, with or without hanhaba obi - look at this one for ex
Not-tied obi, a super modern way of wearing obi. Ayaaya has a lot a those, check for example this one and look at her socials for more (especially "frilly" variations)
Any variations of what I call the "waterfall" musubi, where obi ends are elegantly arranged thanks to elastique belts. It's super fashionable atm, see it shown step by step on Billy Matsunaga's channel.

REMIX! Yesterday we did the name 田口, so let's see what we can get by mixing it up: 田貝 is read Tagai, and 溝口 is Mizoguchi or occasionally Mizokuchi or Mizonoguchi.
田 is read ta or den, and it means rice paddy.
貝 is new to this blog! It's read kai or bai, and it means shellfish. It's also a radical that often shows up in money-related characters—for example, 買 buy, 販 sell, 貿 trade, 費 fees, 貧 poverty, or 貯 savings. I was told that that's because shells were once used as money…… but I wonder.
溝 is also a new one. It's read mizo or kō, and it means ditch, gutter, drain, or sewer.
口 is read kuchi, kō, or ku, and it means mouth or aperture.

Nampō Roku, Book 6 (49.3):  the Shin [眞] Forms of the Kō-kazari [香飾], Part 3.

49 [continued]) Even when the tearoom is a sōan [草菴], if [one] prefers, there are occasions when incense may be appreciated¹:  during a kuchi-kiri [gathering], a dawn gathering or a gathering [held at] dusk, a night gathering -- as well as on occasions when things like the moon, or snow [are calling for appreciation].  [At such times] one should [consider] including [incense]².
○ Sometimes the kōro is tied in its fukuro; or the kōro is [displayed] without a covering; or a hi-tori kōro [火取り香爐] is used.  Sometimes [the focus] is on the incense; sometimes it is on the kōro.  [Perhaps the host] should consider thinking about following the way [the gatherings] were [organized] in ancient times³.

〇 Kaki-ire [書入]:
    When [the host] wishes to put a meibutsu kōro out toward the [guests’] seats, it should be placed (together with the tray [on which it rests]), toward the upper seat⁴.  [Then] all of the guests move forward on their knees, one by one, to smell [the incense] respectfully⁵.
○ Also in the shoin, when [the appreciation of] incense is going to begin, [the kōro] should be [placed] closer to the guests’ seats⁶.

◎ This final section of the entry on the shin [眞] form of the kō-kazari, contains a number of important suggestions, regarding ways in which the appreciation of incense might be incorporated into the format of a gathering.
    The kaki-ire [書入], meanwhile, explains that the kōro should be conveyed to a point near the shōkyaku’s seat before the guests begin to appreciate the incense.
¹Cha-seki sō-an-kata ni mo, sen, kō wo mochii-taki toki ari [茶席草菴方ニモ、專、香ヲ用タキ時アリ].
    Sen [專] means to have a preference for (appreciating incense); to enjoy (appreciating incense).
    Mochii-taki [用い炷] means to burn (incense) -- equivalent to appreciate (incense).
²Kuchi-kiri, akatsuki-kai, yū-sari-kai, yō-kai, mata ha tsuki・yuki no toki nado naru beshi [口切、曉會、夕サリ會、夜會、又ハ月・雪ノ時ナドナルベシ].
    Kuchi-kiri [口切] is the gathering held when a new jar of tea is opened.  Incense is appropriate on this occasion, because the jar is cut open at the beginning of the chakai, and the tea is ground between that time and the naka-dachi.  Including incense means that the host will have more time to grind more matcha, meaning that there will be more tea for the guests to enjoy.
    Akatsuki-kai, yū-sari-kai [曉會、夕さり會]:  as has been mentioned before, according to the idea of san-tan san-ro [三炭三爐] a cold kama is put into the ro at dawn, and dusk.  Because the kama is cold at these two times of the day, it will naturally take much longer to come to a boil, so appreciating incense will give the guests something to do while passing the extra time*.
    Yo-kai [夜會], the night gathering.  At night, people feel comfortable passing the time together.  Since there is no need to rush, including incense would be a pleasant way to prolong the experience†.
    Tsuki・yuki no toki [月・雪の時] refer to gatherings during which the moon, or snow, are singled out for appreciation.  Once again, including incense will invite a feeling of relaxation, encouraging the guests to linger, and enjoy the beauties of nature longer. ___________ *In Book Two there is an example of such a dawn gathering.  The reader should refer to the post entitled Nampō Roku, Book 2 (8):  (1586) Eleventh Month, Twelfth Day, Dawn.

³Arui ha fukuro-iri no kōro, hadaka-kōro, hi-tori kōro, arui ha kō ni yori, arui ha kōro ni yori, ryōken kojitsu wo kangae-beshi [或ハ袋入ノ香爐、ハダカ香爐、火トリ香爐、或ハ香ニヨリ、香爐ニヨリ、料簡故實ヲ考ベシ].
    Fukuro-iri no kōro [袋入の香爐] means that the kōro is tied in its shifuku.  This involves the special procedure for removing the shifuku and preparing the kōro that was described previously.
    Hadaka-kōro [裸香爐] means that the kōro is not tied in its shifuku when it is displayed in the room.  Here the procedure for readying the censer is much simpler.
    Hi-tori-kōro [火取り香爐] refers to a vessel* in which burning tadon are brought out from the katte (rather than kindling them in the ro or furo).  When this device is used, the appreciation of incense does not have to be associated with the sumi-temae -- it may come before the beginning of the chakai proper, or it may follow the service of usucha at the end of the goza.
    Kō ni yori [香により] refers to a gathering the focus of which is the appreciation of a special variety of kyara [伽羅], such as one that is designated meikō [名香].
    Kōro ni yori [香爐により] means that the focus of the gathering is on appreciating a meibutsu kōro.
    Kojitsu wo kangae-beshi [故實を考べし]:  this means an occasion when the host attempts to structure the gathering in imitation of the way Jōō did things in the earliest days of the cha-kai [茶會]†. __________ *In the present day, an akoda-kōro [アコダ香爐] is generally used as the hi-tori-kōro [火取り香爐].

    However, originally, the akoda-kōro was used to perfume a room (this is called sora-daki [空炷] -- perfuming the room without making the source of the fragrance obvious), or to burn scent into ones robes (which were draped over a bamboo frame that was set up over the akoda-kōro).  Generally speaking, the person created his or her own special blend of neri-kō [練り香] (while also adhering to the dictates of the seasons -- which determined the basic seasonal incense formula), and the same incense was used for both purposes.
    According to Tanaka Senshō, it is unclear precisely what kind of object was used as the hi-tori-kōro in Jōō's period.
†It might be more appropriate to term Jōō's earliest gatherings, Kō-cha-kai [香茶會], since, at that time, the appreciation of incense was just as important as the taking of tea.
⁴Meibutsu kōro ha za ni ide-taru toki, bon-nagara kami-za ni oite  [名物香爐ハ座ニ出タルトキ、盆ナガラ上座ニ置テ].
    Za ni ide-taru [座に出でたる] means (the host) wishes to put (a meibutsu kōro) out toward the [guests’] seats.
    Bon-nagara [盆ながら] means together with the tray, or both the tray (and the kōro).
    Kami-za ni oite [上座に置いて] means place it toward the upper seat*.
    This is referring to the case where a meibutsu-kōro is being used for the appreciation of incense.
    Rather than its being placed out on the adjoining mat, with the shōkyaku coming forward and taking it back to his seat with him (and then passing it along the line of guests, and so forth), here the guests move forward toward the kōro on their knees, one by one, to smell the incense.  For that reason, the kōro should be conveyed to a place in the room closer to the shōkyaku’s seat, so they do not have to move more than half the length of a mat on their knees, if possible. __________ *In other words, the seat that is occupied by the shōkyaku -- so he has to move the shortest distance on his knees of them all.

    Kyaku-shū [客衆] means the group of guests; all of the guests.
    Izari-yorite [居ざりよりて = 躄よりて]:  izari [躄] means to move about on ones knees (the way people are taught to do in the tearoom); yorite [よりて] means in this way, in such a manner.
    Hitori-hitori [獨々] means person by person; one-by-one.
    In other words, all of the guests approach the meibutsu-kōro on their knees, one by one.
    Uyamai kiku-beshi [敬い聞くべし] means to smell (the incense) in a respectful manner.
    While the censer naturally has to be picked up and held near the nose, each guest should do this with especial care.  And, as usual, the kōro should never be turned around*.  Rather, it should be picked up and smelled as it is. __________ *As with the chawan, Rikyū taught that it is wrong for the guest to presume to change the orientation.  Rather, the object -- whether it is a chawan or a kōro -- should be picked up and held with the same side facing toward the guest that the host chose, and afterward the object should be set down again without altering its orientation.
    While this procedure should always be followed, even in the case of an ordinary chawan or kōro, it is especially important for the guest to observe this rule when handling a meibutsu utensil.
    In the case of a kōro, the front is determined by the orientation of the three feet:  the space between the front foot and the one on the left is greater than the spacing between the others.  This wider space is to accommodate the palm and fingers of the left hand.  Rotating the censer will make it uncomfortable for the guest to hold the kōro.  (Modern Japanese-made censers do not always follow this rule, perhaps because the modern incense schools -- which all seem to be affiliated with one of the major tea schools -- teach that the kōro should be rotated prior to smelling, just as the tea schools teach that the chawan should be turned before drinking.  Unfortunately, at least in so far as Rikyū is concerned, both are wrong.)
⁶Shoin ni te mo kō hajimaru toki, kyaku-za wo chikazuku-beshi to iu-iu [書院ニテモ香始ルトキ、客座ヲ近ツクベシト云〻].
    Kō hajimaru toki [香始る時] means when [the appreciation of] incense is going to begin -- that is, when the kōro is ready, and the guests are going to begin to smell the incense.
    Kyaku-za wo chikazuku-beshi [客座を近づくべし] means that the kōro should be moved closer to the guests’ seats (so they do not have to move so far while carrying the censer*).
    This point is not (directly) related to the meibutsu-kōro.  Rather, this dictum applies generally, when incense is being appreciated in the shoin. __________ *There is always a danger that, if jiggled about, the piece of incense (or the incense along with the gin-yō [銀葉] on which it rests) could fall to one side, ruining the opportunity to appreciate it (the sides of the hai-gata do not get hot enough -- since the heat is focused on the center of the cone on top of which the gin-yō rests).

    In the shoin, the room is usually large enough that the guests would have to stand up and walk in order to reach the censer -- if it was simply placed on the mat that adjoins the utensil mat.  To make this unnecessary, the kōro should be conveyed toward them, so that their trip can be made on their knees.

Common Japanese Surname Kanji
In conjunction with my “Creating a Japanese name for your character” post, I decided to make a list of the common kanji found in traditional Japanese surnames (as well as a couple of characters that have those kanji in their names!). If you’re looking for a kanji to fill out your character’s family name (if you only have one kanji and need another one, for example) or if you’re looking for some help or inspiration, hopefully this post will help!
井 (i) - well. Common names include Fukui and Inoue. Characters include Inui Ryō (Hound Dog).
上 (kami, gami, ue) - above/top/upper. Common names include Ueda, Tanoue, Makami, Mogami, and Kamigawa. Characters include Kaminari Denki.
岡 (oka) - hill/ridge. Common names include Matsuoka, Yoshioka, and Okamoto.
川 (kawa, gawa) - river. Common names include Ishikawa, Sakigawa, and Kawakami. Characters include Tamakawa Sansa (the cat quirk police officer) and Tsuchikawa Ryūko (Pixie-Bob).
木 (ki, gi) - tree. Common names include Suzuki, Mitsugi, and Kimura. Characters include Shigaraki Tomura, Yagi Toshinori, and Sasaki Mirai (Sir Nighteye), among others.
口 (kuchi, guchi) - mouth/entrance. Common names include Kawaguchi, Yamaguchi, Edakuchi, and Kuchiro. Characters include Kōda Kōji (using an alternate reading) and Iguchi Shūichi (Spinner).
崎 (saki, zaki) - cape/peninsula. Common names include Hamasaki, Kawasaki, Miyazaki, and Sakimoto. Characters include Shiozaki Ibara and Chisaki Kai (Overhaul), among others.
沢 or 澤 (sawa, zawa) - swamp/marsh/mountain stream. Common names include Kurosawa, Serizawa, and Sawase. Characters include Aizawa Shōta (Eraserhead), among others.
下 (shita, jita) - under/below. Common names include Matsushita and Okajita.
島 (shima, jima) - island. Common names include Mizushima, Nakajima, and Shimanose. Characters include Maijima Higar (Power Loader) and Kirishima Eijirō, among others.
田 (ta, da) - rice field. Common names include Yamada, Fujita, and Tamura. Characters include Kōda Kōji, Mineta Minoru, Īda Tenya, Yamada Hizashi (Present Mic), Shishida Jūrōta, Shōda Nirengeki, Hakamata Tsunagu (Best Jeanist), Awata Kaoruko (Bubble Girl), and Tobita Danjūrō (Gentle Criminal), among others.
藤 (tou, dou, fuji) - wisteria. Common names include Saitou, Itou, Kudou, and Fujimoto. Characters include Satō Rikidō and Kendō Itsuka, among others.
中 (naka) - inside/middle/within. Common names include Tanaka and Nakamura. Characters include Irinaka Jōi (Mimic) and Nakagame Tatami (Turtle Neck), among others.
橋 (hashi, bashi) - bridge. Common names include Takahashi and Hashimoto. Characters include Yotsubashi Chikara (Destro) and Yotsubashi Rikiya (Re-Destro).
原 (hara, bara, wara) - field. Common names include Nakahara, Fujiwara, and Harazumi. Characters include Kaibara Sen, Bubaigawara Jin (Twice), and Kamihara Shinya (Edgeshot), among others.
辺 (be) - border. Common names include Watanabe and Sasabe.
丸 (maru) - round/circle. Common names include Ichimaru, Kazemaru, and Marukame.
村 (mura) - village. Common names include Okumura, Himura, and Murakami. Characters include Shimura Tenko (Shigaraki Tomura), Shimura Nana, and the rest of the Shimura family.
本 (moto, hon) - base/origin. Common names include Miyamoto, Sakamoto, and Honda. Characters include Nemoto Shin (one of the Eight Bullets of the Shie Hassaikai).
森 (mori) - forest. Common names include Fujimori, Sugimori, and Morishita. Characters include Komori Kinoko.
林 (yashi, hayashi) - forest/woods. Common names include Kobayashi.
山 (yama) - mountain. Common names include Akiyama, Koyama, and Yamamoto. Characters include Aoyama Yūga, Ishiyama Ken (Cementoss), Kayama Nemuri (Midnight), Yamada Hizashi (Present Mic), Takeyama Yū (Mt. Lady), and Usagiyama Rumi (Mirko), among others.
A reminder just in case anyone needs it: Japanese surnames typically describe a place or the origin of the family it belongs to, for instance if a family came from a “forest origin”, their name might be Morimoto. Or someone from a “snowy village” would be Yukimura. MHA names are not quite so literal or realistic (like Usagiyama “rabbit mountain”), and are meant to be a little more fun.
Keep in mind that this is not a complete or comprehensive list, and that these are NOT all the readings for the kanji. Some of these kanji have different nanori that were not included in this list.
Also a quick note in case anyone was wondering:
When to use KAMI vs. GAMI, SAWA vs. ZAWA, etc.?
Sometimes when you put two kanji next to each other in a name, the second kanji has a different pronunciation/reading. Why? The short answer is, it’s easier to pronounce that way. So some short rules:
Putting two or more kanji together is like a compound word in English, and when you “link” those kanji together, sometimes the latter kanji sounds different (NEVER the first kanji though).
Most kana have a “voiced” (dakuten) version and some have a “half-voiced” (handakuten) version, but it’s mostly the “voiced” version that occurs in pronunciation/spelling when “linking” two kanji.
“ka” ⟶ “ga”, “ki” ⟶ “gi”, etc.
“sa” ⟶ “za” (note: “shi” ⟶ “ji”)
“ta” ⟶ “da” (note: “chi” ⟶ “ji/dji” and “tsu” ⟶ “zu/dzu”)
“ha” ⟶ “ba” or “pa” (though “pa” isn’t used for linking, it’s the “half-voiced” sound)
In the list of kanji above, the 2nd “spelling” for the kanji is the “voiced” pronunciation, for your ease!
Not every linked kanji will change its sound. It’s probably subjective to whoever came up with the family name to begin with, but basically the sounds will be voiced if the person who has the name thinks it flows better as a voiced sound.
Remember that while you might not hear a huge difference in “Ota” and “Oda” or something, there are different nuances in Japanese language that native speakers will pick up that you will not. You might not understand why some names “link” the sounds and others don’t, but to native speakers it makes sense.
In the case of MHA names though? I’d say don’t worry about it too much. Go with the flow of whatever sounds best--or whatever puns the best. (Like Mina Ashido’s surname! Typically it’s pronounced Ashito, but Ashido sounds a lot more like “acid” than Ashito does, right? :D)

Note: Based on this AU. Link here to this chapter on ao3. Kurogiri is a pro hero and UA teacher. Ahmya means ‘black rain and Ayeka means ‘someone who thinks quickly, rationally, or logically’. Shinokanri means ‘possessive particle control’, since her family is mainly telekinetic quirks. Yukimura is Todoroki Rei’s maiden name, it means ‘snow village’. Tamijiki is Magne’s chosen name, it means ‘honest beautiful’.
The Leage Of Misfit Heroes: Chapter 2- Forest Training Camp Arc
Two weeks after the USJ attack, they'd watched the UA Sports Festival and Yukimura had stared every time a certain other half red half white boy was on-screen, almost enthralled to see his matches. It would have been cute if he hadn't later gotten the explanation of that boy being his twin brother, which explained the similar burn marks on Touya's arms and the UA boy's left eye. Both had been given by their mother and Touya had run away after it, but his twin had stayed.
A week later, he and Shimura stood on a water tower in Hosu, watching the three Nomus destroy everything they could as per orders by All For One. This, of course, brought three new members to the League of Villains. Suji Ken aka Muscular, Gin Kuchi aka Moonfish, and Koku Dokuna aka Mustard.
He was wary of them, of course. He'd grown attached to the children he saved and Moonfish seemed to scare some of them, however, since he was a death row escapee, All For One insisted he stay. Mustard mostly kept to himself, given he was eleven and Kurogiri didn't quite trust him a lot with his Quirk, however he could control it to near perfection. Muscular, however, was a different story.
Muscular was forty so he had nine years bested over Blackmist and his Quirk was highly trained in both offense and defense. He was intimidating to the fifteen year olds, yet Mustard and him seemed to be friendly at the least. It worried him given he looked over his arrest records and found several counts of murder of teenagers. But, again, All For One insisted he stay given his Quirk was strong.
Thus now, he prepared the teenagers in their villain costumes, get ready for their new mission, even if he hated it, hated doing this. His wife was there, he couldn't believe All For One would put her in danger like this when he promised he wouldn't if Blackmist did what the man said. But, albeit unwillingly, he warped the Vanguard to the Beast's Forest and he left them to their fight, save for Shimura, who stayed home with the tail-end of a pretty bad cold that he was sure would turn into pneumonia soon if he didn't get medical help for him. He would stay here to care for him until it was time to warp the others back, whether or not they had the students from the list.
Finally! Himiko had that stupid inhibitor off again! Almost as immediately as the others had went to their positions, she shed her gear and she moved from her position, wandering to find someone, anyone to listen to her. If she told them they weren't doing this willingly, that they were being threatened, maybe they'd spare them. She came to find a green haired girl and a brunette girl.
"Kero, who are you?" The greenette asked her.
"My name is Toga Himiko. I'm Shifter from the League of Villains." The two girls clung to each other.
'Dammit, Himiko, wrong way to say that!' She reprimanded herself.
"I don't want to hurt you or anyone. Look, I even took my gear off. You can even hold it if you don't trust me." She held out her gear, armored padding for her joints and her mask that would hide her identity. But now she'd put it all in the open just to give her and her friends a chance. "You can bind my hands even so I can't touch anything but I need you to listen to me and trust me, please?" She offered. The shorter one with green hair slowly took the gear from her hands and the one in the light pink top used the velcro belt from one of them to bind her hands together. Fine, that was fine as long as they listened.
"Now talk. What do you want?" The brunette asked coldly.
"The League of Villains isn't really villains. We're being forced to do this. There's a man, he tells us what to do. He's blackmailing us into staying."
"Even Sensei Watoto?" The brunette asked.
"Especially Sensei Watoto. The man said he'd kill his wife and kids if he doesn't listen." She explained.
"Why do you stay, kero?" The greenette asked.
"He'd kill my friends that have become my family." She felt tears spring up. No, she could cry later, not now. Not in front of these girls. That would look pitiful and it wouldn't have the effect she needed. She needed them to trust her, not pity.
