July 27, 2023 - Sapphire-spangled Emerald (Chionomesa lactea)
Found in parts of Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela, and possibly Ecuador, these hummingbirds live in forests and open habitats, sometimes near rivers. They feed on nectar from native and introduced flowers, as well as insects, capturing prey in the air. Males defend foraging territories. Breeding from October to January, females build cup-shaped nests from plant down and spiderwebs covered with lichen and incubate clutches of two eggs.
