#lan clan rules

Someone introduces the Lan clan to sign language and it becomes really popular so they can "talk" while they eat now without breaking the rule. Lan Qiren is skeptical because sometimes it makes them laugh, with food in their mouths, but his people seem generally to be happy.

Lan Qiren: The law clearly says do not fall in love with a psycho serial killer!
Lan Xichen: Actually, the law kind of says don't BE a murdering psycho serial killer.
Lan Qiren: The law also says do not associate with evil!
Lan Wangji: .......
Lan Xichen: .......
Lan Wangji, with a pout: Evil's kind of cute.
Lan Qiren: Public whippings for all of ye!

One thing I love about Lan Wangji is that how the way he’s viewed by others changes with the progression of his arc.
When we meet him in the Cloud Recesses, he’s already well known in the cultivation world. He’s known for being one of the Twin Jades of Lan – for being a model disciple, for being perfectly skilled in everything you’d expect a young master to be proficient in, for perfectly encapsulating all the Lan Sect’s principles, including their immovable adherence to the rules. And that’s immensely impressive. But the thing is, he’s not really defined by himself – it’s not his own identity he’s carving out, but the identity of a perfect disciple of a clan. That’s even echoed in his title as one of the Lan’s Twin Jades. He’s known, first and foremost, for being a son of the Lan Clan’s Sect Leader.
But as he starts to develop, as he starts to grow, what he’s known for changes, and people begin to know him for who, not what, he is. He’s not famous, first and foremost, for being Lan Wangji, one of the Twin Jades – but for being Hanguang-Jun, the ‘light bearer’, the person who goes where the chaos is, and for a title and reputation he’s carved out of his own merits. Instead of being known for perfectly embodying rules and principles, he becomes known for being righteous*, fair, and for caring about the common people; for prioritising their safety over his own reputation in a way that no other important member of a clan did. And I think it’s important to note that although doing this doesn’t break any rules, it does stand in contrast to the actions of most cultivators (and is even look down upon by some people, like Jiang Cheng, though I’m not sure how much of that is due to their personal history). Instead of being famous for embodying the values of the cultivation world, he becomes known for what he does that sets him apart from it.
People begin to define him by his actions and by everything he does that shows who he is as a person; not as somebody defined by embodying the status and clan he was born into. His reputation given to him as a Twin Jade has been carved into a reputation he’s made for himself, as himself.
And I think that’s beautiful.

Why do I get the feeling that Lan Sizhui just doesn’t give a heck who touches his forehead ribbon? He exudes such intense platonic love vibes: all his friends are his soulmates, his family are his soulmates, everyone he loves and cares about are his soulmates so like… who cares actually, touch the ribbon, he loves you all equally

Something that bothers me about the untamed is how politically unrealistic it is. In the later half of the show none of the sect leaders have married or had kids???? That's crap and not how any of that would work. I mean if JC doesn't procreate that leaves Jin Ling as the sole heir to both Jin and Jiang Clans and no way would anyone allow him to rule both
But given that that's how it is set up...I propose a solution that could technically work! Jin Ling obviously gets the Jin Clan. NHS will have to marry and procreate since he has 0 family members. Those are easy
The Jiang Clan is screwed because JC is an angry ace who really couldn't be bothered to deal with courting or marriage. His only sister had one child who is already leading another sect and so can't inherit the Jiang. BUT WAIT! JC has a brother! Who has a son! Both adopted but hey when you're desperate...
So JC would have to officially recognize WWX as his brother and officially recognize Sizhui as his son but those are formalities and then JC and the Jiang would finally have an heir! (Aside from the part where canon set this up as legit the only option I love the idea of Lan "perfect Lan" "actually a Wen" Sizhui inheriting the Jiang)
Except where does that leave the Lan sect?? Because the last members of the main family are gay af and won't have their own kids and now the adopted son of one of them (the only child between the two of them) is heir to another sect. Which leaves them with the option of either LWJ or LXC adopting a child to be the heir or the Lan clan accepting a branch family member/(distant) cousin to be the heir instead. Which, after the war and the attack on Cloud Recesses, leaves them with...Lan Jingyi.
So based on the fact that none of the heroes of the Sunshot Campaign had kids (and are all too gay to bother) the future of the cultivation world will rest in the hands of:
A Nie clan led by a child borne of and raised by NHS
A Jin clan led by a man raised by Jiang Cheng
A Jiang clan led by a member of the family that destroyed it/the perfect Lan/the son of the perfect embodiment of the Jiang motto
A Lan clan led by the un-Lanest Lan.
I wish them luck

More MDZS/CQL thoughts but: I find it hilarious the perception of young!Lan Zhan is that he's cold as jade, and like, inexpressive or whatever when actually the first thing he does upon meeting Wei Wuxian is - in the course of enforcing the rules of Cloud Recesses - IMMEDIATELY START A FIGHT WHICH IS AGAINST THE RULES.
In the novel Wei Wuxian is talking to Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang, and gets distracted reading the Lan wall of rules, and goes: "Wait, fighting without permission is prohibited?"
Because Lan Zhan immediately fights him.

Very cold and inexpressive of him. What would possibly make you think he's hot tempered?

People see the Lan clan all decked in white and of course the first thought is purity and holiness. Until you remember that white is the colour for mourning in China. 💀 It honestly explains a lot about that clan.
"Don't run. Don't walk too fast. Don't make noise. Don't show too much emotion."
Brah, who died? 💀

We are sorry to inform you that Furbies are now banned from the Cloud Recesses due to Senior Wei bringing one to life and giving it consciousness.
