In case you needed some nightmare fuel, this is what the oesophagus of a leatherback sea turtle looks like on the inside.
Those spines keep jellyfish in but let sea water out. Unfortunately, they also keep plastic bags in, making them very vulnerable to plastic impaction!

Leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) And here's the last of the illustrations made for the UK bycatch project. Not my usual subject and yet an old friend, as I had previously illustrated a Leatherback for the Marine Animal Response Society. Like last time I had a lot of fun with this one, especially the white markings. They are a beautiful and willing subject.
These are the very biggest of the turtles, growing to a whopping 2.7 metres in length and weighing over half a ton, though most are significantly smaller. Highly recommend looking up photos of them next to humans to get a sense of their size. Also internet famous for their impressively spiked throat, which helps keep jellyfish (their prey) from flowing back outside once caught.

Babs, Bruce and Danny in my dpxdc merfolk au!!!
argh, plz excuse the poorly edited photo lmao- lost a lot of detail TvT
Babs has her info Here. But this is her design! I’m not actually entirely sure if any of these designs are final, i might tweak them, but here she is! I gave her necklaces.
Bruce is based on a leatherback sea turtle! The spots aren’t actually super accurate to a leatherback’s underside, but if you look at it a little harder... you may find a fun little easter egg. It’s subtle... or at least i tried to make it that way. (If people don’t get it i’ll explain in a rb lol) Did you know that leatherback sea turtles can be up to 880 pounds? Idk what that is in metric but that’s roughly 7 and a half Bahfevs. They’re also much more triangular/less round than other turtles, so I reflected that in his design. And ofc, Bruce and Damian are both sea turtles bc they’re related. But they’re different sea turtle species so it doesn’t make much sense. Who gives a flip. What’s Talia, you ask? To that I say: 🤷‍♀️
(Side note: apparently, I’ve conditioned myself so I can’t draw nuetral expressions. It’s gotta have some emotion or else it looks wrong, and it feels natural to always have something going on there. So... drawing Stoic McStoicface here was a pain in the penis. He kinda has an expression anyway lol)
Danny is based on a ghost knife fish! I’ll be honest, i didn’t even know these existed until I looked up “ghost fish” in the hopes of finding something thematic. But then... omg! They’re black with little white accents? Like Danny’s design? And they have cool, funky bodies? AND they produce electricity!?? That’s so FKING COOL! I’ll have to do more research, but so far i’m pretty sure they don’t produce enough electricity to hurt someone. They are related to electric eels though! I first learned that electric eels were knife fish and not true eels when I was researching the moray eel for Duke. Funny how that connects!
Danny’s story under the cut!
Heehoo!
Okay so basically: Danny went diving to gather pearls because he wanted to make his parents happy/proud. While he was diving, His foot got caught in a rock and he couldn’t get it out. He panicked and he begged— to who? God, maybe? The universe, or the ocean? Maybe just begging fate or any higher power that could be out there, he doesn’t know. His only prayer was “Don’t let me drown!”. Unbeknownst to him, one of the pearls he’d grabbed was a magic, wish granting pearl. They’re rare enough that humans don’t even have legends of them... but the merfolk do ;).
The pearl took his very non-specific wish and decided to give him a tail and gills. He swam back up in a panic, and saw his new tail. Of course, this is a very horrifying thing to happen. But in less than a minute... it was already starting to dry off. As it dried, it turned back into skin.
Now, Danny has to be extremely careful not to get his legs or hair wet when he’s near people, because he’ll turn back into a merboy.
i... probably should have given him a shirt? He’d be wearing it, right? But i also did need to see what I was doing with that fin thing lol. I mean, a shirt would get annoying with that fin- he’d probably take it off. Tbh he’d probably have it off when swimming in general? Idk.
So: funny thing that happened when I was drawing Danny:
A first grader came up to me while I had it open on my desk, and she was like:
“Oh my god, that’s so good! Like, how did you even draw that?”
so I was like: “Oh thank you! ❤️”
And I think she asked again “How did you even draw that?”
so I was a little confused on how to answer, so I said:
“Well, I used my pencil...” and held up my pencil—
and then she got distracted by a spinny chair.
She’s so precious omg 🥰

Turtle noises and rottmnt
Like ok rottmnt fan works made me search on yt turtles noises cos they're precious
And I'm googling specifically why they meow and chirp and it wasn't what I thought it would be.
Only one mentioned what meowing means and said turtles cries can sound like meowing ;-;
Like these boys can be making these adorable noises while bawling their eyes out ;-;
And chirping one had alot on red eared sliders
One said "It is common for Red eared sliders to chirp. Sometimes, it can mean that your turtle is uncomfortable because of the water temperature, or because they have a respiratory illness."
Which I can now imagine leo meowing when he gets sick enough and can't smooth talk his way out like his brothers being like "You're sick"
Leo: I am *meow* not
But also said "Sometimes, Red eared sliders will chirp if they are bored"
Which I imagine is Leo's verbal stimming lol (and has probably irritated donnie w it lol)
Another one says "Other times, these turtles[red eared sliders] make chirping noises simply because they’re fatigued."
Which again goes back to leo not being able to lie and say he's fine, his chirps can't hide nothing.
Also leatherback hatchlings make noises like chirping. Which I mean none of the rise turtles are but its interesting cos it can happen BEFORE hatching.
The same one also says kinda similar to red eared sliders chirping "Most commonly, baby turtles make these chirping sounds due to stress, although changed water temperatures and sometimes even excited eating can cause turtles to chirp. These chirps can also be due to illness, so look out for any symptoms"
So basically all of them could chirp when they're little and when they're excited to eat.
The only mention of actual happy sounds when they're excited to eat lmao what a mood like no actual vocal cords yet willing to make noise for food.
"Some turtles and tortoises emit tiny squeaks, grunts, and sighs when they're eating. These noises are indicative of the turtle's excitement!"

> video claiming to be of a giant sea turtle
> weird perspective of a regular green sea turtle
> picture claiming to be a leatherback sea turtle
> has a shell (once again just dodgy perspective on a green sea turtle)
like once you notice it you can't stop seeing it. like that video supposedly of a giant sea turtle that A) is obviously a green sea turtle at a size they don't grow to and B) people are claiming in the comments is a leatherback despite that being so incredibly blatantly false if you even slightly know what leatherbacks look like.
Tumblr media
that's one of the videos that inspired this just... "this is a sea turtle" like that's the species or something??? green sea turtles *can* live up to 100 years which is not 500, and the lifespan of leatherbacks is maybe 50-100 years max? obviously not 100% accurate there. idk i know it's clickbait as all those "cute animal videos" accounts are but this just makes me grumpy.
*manipulative camera angle of a chicken to look giant* "this is a bird, i know they can live for over 1000 years but i never knew they got this big"
Tumblr media
^ this cool reptile is the largest of all living turtles and honestly who knows exactly how long they live but it aint 500 years. notice the lack of shell on its Leathery Back please also notice how it's not a green sea turtle. hopefully this helps 🐢

Animal of the Day!
Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)
Tumblr media
(Photo from DinoAnimal)
Conservation Status- Vulnerable
Habitat- Pacific Ocean; Atlantic Ocean; Indian Ocean
Size (Weight/Length)- 780 kg; 2 m
Diet- Jellyfish; Seaweed; Small fish
Cool Facts- The leatherback sea turtle is the largest species of turtle and one of the heaviest reptiles. Born on beaches in Florida and Indonesia, these turtles spend the majority of their lives in the open ocean. Being an active jellyfish predator, leatherback sea turtles follow the swarms from place to place. Very few predators are large enough to take on these turtles, only large great white sharks and killer whales are able to take them down. Sadly, many more of these turtles die from plastic consumption by mistaking it for a jellyfish. They are also caught as bycatch in fishing nets. Luckily, many countries protect these gentle giants on a federal level. Several well known hatchery beaches are protected from predators and extreme temperatures, with hundreds of volunteers protecting eggs and ushering hatchlings to the sea.
Rating- 14/10 (Hope with all your heart that they can be saved.)
