2015 - After leaving BROOKLABS, Oz begins learning to use guns and knives, citing his steady hands and quiet demeanor for a good reason to be added as a hitman.
Late 2015 - Oz takes care of his first hit and does impeccably.
Early 2016 - Oz's father passes.
2018 - Oz starts a long-term relationship (WC) with someone unaware of his deep connection to the Syndicate or his job as a hitman.
2020 - Oz's younger brother (WC) moves closer to NYC.
Early 2021 - The hit that goes wrong. Oz is gravely injured and in the hospital for months.
Late 2021 - After getting out of the hospital, Oz gives some info to his partner about what he does. His partner leaves him, sending him spiraling.
Early 2022 - Oz is hired by Audra to manage the Athenaeum while she's away.
Current: Oz helps crunch numbers and aid with inventory and occasionally will delve into the Black Market world again when he's needed, but ultimately mostly manages the Athenaeum. He misses his hitman days and is currently in a wheelchair, sometimes using forearm crutches as a mobility aid instead, depending on his level of comfort and energy.

You watched the man in astonishment, observing every explosion of color that lit the air when a shivering bubble popped. The air in the small room had become thick with smoke, your nostrils assaulted with the scent of fire and burning roots. Long dexterous fingers plucked leaves from odd shrubbery tossing them into the simmering brew. Once the thick bubbling liquid cooled the man let it flow into a jar like molasses and handed it to you.
“Find a way to make him drink it, it should start kicking in, in a couple hours.”
“T-thank you-
“Don’t thank me. And don’t come back to this place. I won’t answer.”
.
.
.
Had you been desperate? Yes. Had it been worth it? You didn’t know… Your fingers dug into the wood, nails creasing at how tightly you gripped the podium. You were counting in your head reaching as far as eight hundred fifty-five before the Judge cut off your clutch. It was but a miniscule change but you could see how the balding man rolled his eyes. The subtle movement had your heart plummeting to the pit of your belly. In that moment you could tell that he had already made his verdict and calling up the pro hero was just procedure.
“Mr. Takami.” The judge began. “I have heard the allegations you have made towards Ms. (Lastname), I would like you to recount the events. Please start with how you met.”
“Certainly your honor.” Keigo nodded. He cleared his throat, molten gold eyes meeting yours in a slitted glare.
“I was on patrol at the time, something my protegee and those of my agency can confirm. It was nearing the end of my shift and I was headed back when I saw…Ms.(Lastname).” He grimaced at the sound of your last name leaving his lips.
“The moment I saw her I took off in her direction.” The judge asked why, even though he had read up on the matter. “She was standing atop a building, Block twenty five, building six. I noticed by the way her body was being pushed by the wind that she had climbed over onto the ledge. A jumper is what I thought and I was there right as she stepped off.”
The room was quickly filled with incredulou susurrations. Keigo allowed the bystanders to control themselves before continuing. “I managed to catch her before she plummeted and hit the ground. At the time she was rabid, her nails dug into my skin, she tugged at my hair and bit me, as you can see from the images in the report. After a while she was left sobbing and after a small conversation I took her to the hospital and we found the right people to help her.”
“Is all of this true?” He looked to you for an answer.
“Yes your honor.” You whispered. You wanted to yell at Takami, shout at him for lying. It wasn’t just him catching you!? It was much more than that! He saved your life!? He gave you hope that life wasn’t meaningless and he cared enough to get you help, it wasn’t as emotionless as he described it was much more..intimate.
Regardless of your thoughts in the matter, Takami continued with his tale.
“A couple of weeks went by and I had forgotten about the incident.” He shrugged, the nonchalant tone was like being a bug and having someone squash and rotate their shoe on you. He spat on your feelings in his next confessions. “But then all of a sudden she showed up at my agency, I didn’t think much of it. She thanked me like someone normally would, offered to buy me dinner which I declined and left me a thank you card.”
‘That wasn’t how it happened..’ You fought the tears threatening to spill from your eyes. He had been incredibly sweet with you, asked you how you were doing, he smiled like the sun when he gave you a hug congratulating you on your new will to live, he declined your proposal for dinner and promised. He promised, he said ‘Maybe some other time.’ You grit your teeth not wanting to lose your cool in front of everyone. ‘But at this rate…He’ll really get a restraining order.’
Sweat began to dot your back, your dress shirt clinging to your skin as you waited for the spell to kick in. However, Takami was showing no signs of being under the effects of the potion as he listed off every ‘offense’
“From there it only got worse, I began to see her everywhere. No matter where I went she was always shadowing me, She kept leaving me unwanted gifts, she got a hold of my email address and number, She found my personal address and broke into my house… “ He visibly shuddered before adding. “I had someone over one night and we had heard something, she was in my fucking closet-
“Language Mr. Takami.” The judge sighed. In the judge’s eyes you were just another overzealous fan, this case was nothing that he hadn’t heard.
“Objection.” Your lawyer called. The judge grunted allowing your lawyer to speak, he knew how this would play out- “Mr. Takami has lied, there is no evidence placing my client in his apartment at the times he has reported. Mr. Takami has also failed to produce said witness to testify that they did indeed see Ms. (Name) (Lastname).”
That was new… The judge furrowed his brows and looked at the reports on his desk once more. There was indeed no evidence….Odd. You looked at your ‘lawyer’ a discreet smile upon your lips, then you turned to look towards Hawks who glared at you. Unease set in your belly…’It wasn’t working..’ You dared another look at the blonde and saw that his steely gaze was set on your lawyer. Blood drained from your veins, only to be replaced by liquid nitrogen ‘Did he know!?’
“Y-Your honor.” Takami stuttered, a pained grimace on his face. “There also was an incident last night.”
The elderly man sat up straighter, intrigue bubbling in his irises.
“Ms. (Lastname)… Ms.. She.” An odd flush colored his cheeks, his wings puffed out like a blowfish as his breath quickened. A collective gasp was wrought out of everyone once his eyes rolled and he slumped over. There was a rush of people, colors swirled around you as the cacophony of chaos penetrated your ears. Your wrists were caught and you were quickly restrained, the officers on standby clearly finding his last statement to be indicative of foul play.
.
.
.
‘Slam!’
“Tell me what you did?!” The officer shouted in your face.
“I-I swear I didn’t do anything.” You stuttered. You quickly recalled what your ‘lawyer’ told you to say. “I swear my life on it that I only spoke with him, I apologized to him, I didn’t mean for my behavior to come across as ‘odd’.”
“Lies!” He shouted.
“I dunno man.” Another cop shrugged, crossing his arms as his brows furrowed in thought. “From all of our evidence it shows that she’s been on a good track, takes her meds, follows up with her therapist, hell there’s no proof of her even being near Hawks all the times he said she was…Then there’s also the matter of his reputation…”
The other man backed off his co-workers words seeming to resonate with him. “So you’re saying that….What if it’s the other way around?”
“Exactly!? What if she rejected him and this was his way of revenge?” The other added.
“Hmm it’s not that much of a stretch, he is a pro-hero after all.” He scoffed. “Is that what happened?” He asked you. You weren’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
“Y-Yes… I-I went that day to thank him and he flirted non-stop with me, then he started appearing everywhere, I told him I wasn’t interested in him like that, that I only wanted to thank him for saving me. The next thing I knew I was being brought down to the station and was shown a bunch of messages I didn’t type.” You whimpered. “I-I don’t get w-why he’s doing this.” You sniffed.
“That fucking bastard.” The man who had been shouting at you hissed.
“Fucking pro-heros!? They think they can do what ever the fuck they want!?” The other seethed. Once you were let go a grin crawled onto your face, they probably thought you hadn’t noticed but there was a red light coming off the camera.
The next hearing came a week later after Hawks had recovered from whatever happened. You had to thank the ‘witch doctor’ he did such a thorough job that even the top medical professionals were left baffled. Said man walked up next to you, he sat next to you and slid you over a note. ‘It’s done.’
“Done?” You whispered. You didn’t have to ponder it any longer as the blonde hero strolled by, his sunlight orbs glued to your frame as he sat down. He had his head bent at an owlish degree as he continued to bore his eyes into you….. It was slightly unnerving. You leaned over to adjust your shoes-
Bam!
The noise startled a yelp out of you and your wide eyes looked up to see Keigo, the palms of his hands had slammed down on the wood allowing paper to fall like scattered leaves. Angel curls of blonde shadowed vibrant gold as he looked down at you. It was then that you heard the voices commanding him to sit back down. He left albeit reluctantly to his seat…
That display along with the recording the police had presented crumbled his defense and when he was called to stand the foundations perished.
“It’s true.” He lied. “I made it all up. The truth is I fell in love with (Name) but she didn’t return my feelings and my pride got hurt. I apologize for inconveniencing you all.” The last words were but lip service and the judge set a price. It was obvious that he was getting off with a slap on the wrist but that was fine with you. In fact you refused the offer they made of you getting a restraining order against him clearly that was the last thing you wanted.
The spellman was gone as soon as you had collected your things from the court lockers, he left with a cryptic smile his last lines you had brushed off. “As if I’d regret this.” You scoffed, a smile on your lips as you caught Hawk’s gaze on you.
.
.
.
Your knuckles rasped against the wooden door aggressively. Your knuckles were raw, blood vessels popped, red streaks of your vital fluids seeping through. Tears dotted your waterline, the horrid liquid distorted your vision as you practically slammed your body against the door. Your voice was hoarse wrought with strenuous use.
“Please!?” You screeched feverishly. “Please let me in!?” You cried.
The rusting door gave way with a particularly harsh kick. Said kick set off pins and needles but the pain was drowned out by the relief of having the door open. You peered inside.
“No” You whispered. You recalled the man who sold you the potions words. ‘Don’t come back.’ “Fuck” You cried quickly turning to find somewhere else to hunker down. ‘If only I could get to a precinct!?’ You thought.
Your lungs burned, the sacs expanded in quick succession, they had been overworked and their production volume wasn’t nearly enough to fuel you. With every pant you lost momentum, with every pouding step your bones shook, but you couldn’t stop. No you wouldn’t even stop to ask for help even that could prove to be detrimental. ‘His eyes are sharp, too sharp he’ll spot me.’ You skid to the right tumbling into a narrow alley, it would be difficult for him to get through due to his wingspan.
As you caught your breath against the grimey wall you took a moment to think. ‘How the hell did it turn out like this?’ Everything was amazing, the effects of the potion were immediate, he asked you out at the speed of light, and soon you were going on blissfully sweet dates. He doted on you and fawned over you at every moment, you even took pride in the fact that he was neglecting his work for you. It made you feel special, loved.
You shared intimacy allowed him to get even more familiar with your body than even you were, it wasn’t even a month and you had moved in together, it was perfect. Until it wasn’t. Everyday.. Everyday or every minute or second he spent with you he’d fall more in love with you. It was becoming suffocating, he wouldn’t leave your side, his feathers glued to you at all hours of the day whether you were relieving yourself or watching clothes tumble and swirl in a washer.
He had to always be touching your skin, an arm, a hand, hell a pinkie, if your skin wasn’t in contact with his he’d go into panic, pupils shrunken to needle points as he panted and called for you. The jealousy was endearing in the beginning, but soon you weren’t allowed to let your gaze shift from him. You weren’t allowed to watch the actors on the T.V. You weren’t allowed to hear music because you only needed to hear his voice.
You could feel the hot tears streaming down your face as you stood in the dank cold alley. You only wanted him to at least spare you a glance, to give you a chance… You didn’t want whoever this person was. He looked like the angelic man you fell for but that was not him. Today you had taken the opportunity to run. His speech had become frightening, he spoke of gouging your eyes so that the ugly world didn’t taint your eyes, he spoke of having your beauty preserved for eternity. ‘The world doesn’t deserve you’ You could almost gag at the remembrance of those words.
“Baby bird!” You pressed yourself against the wall behind a dumpster hoping and praying that he wouldn’t spot you. “Birdey!?” He cried.
To any bystander he looked like a worried man calling out for his lover, hell he probably already spread that lie. You cringed when you heard a snipping sound, it was a habit he had picked up when he stressed over you, he bit his nails to the bed, even behind your clenched eyes you could see his wide yellow eyes watching you, thumb in his mouth as he watched you and thought. You covered your mouth, you were ready to erupt, hysteria was tugging at your heart and you wanted to give in and just scream.
You couldn’t hear him anymore. You breathed out a sigh of relief, he had gone to search elsewhere. You took a moment to think, ‘where do I go from here?’ You summarized that he was probably a block or two away. ‘If I go down block twenty-seven I can go into the club and borrow a phone.’ With a plan set you nodded and opened your eyes.
Gold.
A painful scream tore through your throat, his cattish eyes were glazed over a smile stretching his lips. His hands quickly shot out towards you, he wrapped his body around you, his heat more uncomfortable than the cold autumn air.
“I was so worried.” He breathed, you felt his tremors. “Why did you run away?”
“I-I wanted to-
“Don’t lie to me babybird.” His clipped tone froze you. “Are you trying to leave me?”
You shook your head. “O-of c-course not I-I love you K-Keigo why w-would I leave y-you?” Your voice wavered horrendously.
“I know.” He smiled, he rubbed his cheek to yours affectionately. He pulled back and his smile dipped. “But you don’t love me enough.”
The dark timbre had you squeaking out a choppy what. “I love you so so much more than you love me. And that hurts, it hurts so much… Why can’t you understand that I just want you to know that.”
“I- T-the way you love me is scary Keigo.” You dared to whisper.
“No it’s not!” He shouted, his grip becoming tight enough to make you wince. “I love you, I love you, I love you so so damn much that I don’t want you to think or anyone else, I don’t want you to see anyone else, I don’t want you to hear anyone else, I want to be your whole world like you are my world.”
“I-I know-
“No you don’t!” He screamed. “You don’t know because you keep trying to leave and put distance between us! You don’t listen to me and you keep on looking at things! You keep hearing other people’s voices when it should only be me! Why won’t you let it be me?” His voice cracked near the edges and your eyes looked around frantically, you were desperate to find a way to defuse him.
“K-Keigo look I-
“I hate you.” Your jaw dropped. “I love you so much I fucking hate you (Name).” You couldn’t understand, but you were powerless to stop his next course of action. He tackled your body into him and shot up to the sky, bloody plumage fell down around you as he flew above ropes and powerlines till he was above the cracks of the building. Fearing for your life you clung to him, surprise filling your being when he landed on a building. A very eerily familiar building.
“It was here that we met.” He mumbled hugging you to his chest tightly. “It’s only fitting that we depart here too.”
“K-keigo m-my love what-” He pressed his cool finger to your lips, your words wouldn’t change his mind.
“You don’t love me enough to call me that, and remember I established that I hate you.” He chuckled.
You looked around your eyes catching sight of his watch, you needed to stall. ‘If he’s thinking what I think he’s thinking then he’s going to do whatever it is at the exact time I jumped a year ago.’ When you were going to end your life last year you calculated it so that the janitor of this building would find your note in no less than five minutes. You had wanted him to lean over and see your distorted body. And now the janitor, that Ex you were going to kill yourself for was your only hope….
“W-why do you hate me?” You asked softly, your eyes hard on the hands of the clock. You prayed to every deity above hoping that he didn’t hear the rapid pitter patter of your heart.
“Because… You’re too cruel, I just want your love to the same degree that you have mine, but I can see that I’ll never have it. And I hate that. I hate that you’re causing me so much pain.”
“I c-can love you like that if you want.” You gulped.
“ You’re lying.” He sighed, the puff of air sounded like that of a parent in disappointment of their child. “You’re waiting for someone who isn’t even alive to come in and drag you out of my arms.”
“….”
“You know…” He stood up with you, and you struggled in his hold as he walked you towards the ledge. “I’ve stayed awake for night on end wondering, I wonder when was it that I started feeling this way? Why? It’s all a mystery to me and it irks me heh… I guess that’s another thing I hate about you… I hate that I don’t know why I love you so much.”
The wind cut into your face as you looked down. Keigo grabbed your face squishing your cheeks together. “After I do this I’m going to turn myself in and make sure they end me, even though I hate you I can’t imagine living without you.”
“Wait please!” You shouted, you weren’t ready to give up just yet.
“No more word-
“Shut up and listen!” you hissed. You felt him tense behind you. You hadn’t even spoken to him in such a nasty tone. “Yes you’re right! You don’t love me.”
“But I do so mu-”
“No you don’t!” You were openly crying now, snot running down the tip of your nose. “It’s all a lie! You really hate me and you should! I.. I gave you a love potion a couple months ago.”
“Wha…” Keigo froze, a million thoughts rushing in his head.
“It’s true…” You whispered “And I’m sorry.”  A rush of emotion filled him, love, hate, loathing, disgust, remorse, doubt and in the heat of it:
He pushed you.

Hi! If you’re still doing prompts, can you do 49. “Who hurt you?” Or 53. “Who cares about what they think?” + stevebucky?
Anon, I wanted to do both, but I only managed one this time :/ Maybe the second one would be a fluffier Part 2 to this piece in the future. If that happens, I'd rb this with the link (From this list: “Who hurt you?”)
-//-
There’s a boy in his class he’d never seen before.
Stick-like with dishwater hair and a beak for a nose. He walks around like he’s got the entire world on his bony shoulders; head down, eyes on the floor and he makes sure he’s one with the wall all the time.
Bucky knows it’s not his business, but he knows what a fist to the face tastes like on the tongue, so he makes it his, anyway.
Two weeks into the term, he catches the boy out of the school gate and asks, “Are you new here?”
The boy startles and looks up and - My god! Bucky thinks.
He’s got the prettiest pair of blue for his eyes and if Bucky had been thirteen, crushing on a boy for the first time, he would have freaked out.
As it is, he’s 17 and been out for a year now. So he shakes the awe out of his fluttering lashes and puts on his best smile. “Hello, I’m Bucky Barnes,” he says. Hands held out for an offer to shake.
But the boy looks at him then his hand and he looks up again and he mutters, “Keep away from me.”
Bucky has faced rejection a billion times, he’s not a stranger to being shunned because of his sexual preference, but hell. This wasn’t even a come on. He was just introducing himself. And the response he got to that just pisses him off - beautiful boy or not.
“Shit dude, who hurt you,” he scowls. “Here I am offering friendship cause you look like you could use one and - you know what. Fuck you, man. You wanna be alone? Hell if I care.”
Should have stayed in his lane. Should not have made this boy his business. Should have known he was just like the rest of them jerks.
Except he looks like he’d sucked on a sour candy upon hearing Bucky’s words and he stutters out a soft sorry. “I thought you - you were gonna jump me.”
“Well, I wasn’t, all right,” Bucky sighs, raking his fingers through his hair and it’s kind of awkward.
But he walks home that day with the boy’s name fresh on his lips and his hand still warm from a shake.
-
Steve Rogers is turning 18 in three months against all odds. Ma seems to tear up more and more leading his birthday and he cannot blame her for that. She’s emotional, and if he wasn’t so hopeless himself, perhaps he’d feel the same.
Living with Cystic Fibrosis sent him to deathbed more than once. He’d greeted the reaper, kissed its hand but every time they thought this was it; he was pulled back to earth once again.
He doesn’t hate life, he just thinks he’s been fated to death since the day he was born.
So he keeps to himself; doesn’t make any connections he cannot afford to sever and kisses Sarah Rogers goodnight before bed like it’s their last goodbye.
But he’s turning 18 in three months and maybe that gives him some hope because he accidentally lets a boy in too deep into his heart.
-
When Bucky first finds out about Steve’s… condition, it’s been three weeks into their friendship, and they’re in a coffee shop sharing a bagel sandwich after their last class for the day.
He’d said something funny and Steve had broken into peals of laughter, grabbing his chest and wheezing from uncontainable joy and for a moment, it was the most beautiful thing Bucky had ever seen.
And then it was the worst.
He saw Steve collapse right in front of him and ten other people; saw someone call for an ambulance, one of the staff yelled at Bucky about something but he couldn’t hear it. Couldn’t compute anything at all.
He froze where he stood; watching Steve die before him.
The paramedics arrived, someone pointed at him, one of the paramedics asked him if he was a friend; he said, yes.
She asked, “Can you tell me what happened?”
He stuttered, “No. I - He. He’s my friend. But I don’t know what just happened to him. Is he - Is he going to be okay?”
She’d looked at him, first disappointed then sad. She said, “Your friend’s going to be okay. If you want, you can ride along with us.”
She probably thought Bucky was a bad friend, but she never said that. She showed him the band around Steve’s wrist - which he’d never seen Steve took off, much less asked what it meant; just assumed it was important and left it at that - and told him what it means.
She flipped Steve’s wallet open, pulled out a card and gave it Bucky. “You’re lucky we know him,” she said.
“Stevie’s a good boy. But he’s very shy, and he’s always kept to himself so, it’s very nice to know he’s been going around making friends.”
Two hours later, he’s still sitting in the waiting room with his hands clasped in front of him, watching two ants carry a bread crumb across the tile between his feet.
Someone sits next to him; a nurse under her unzipped hoodie she’s got on and when he looks up, she smiles at him.
“I heard you’re Steve’s friend.”
Bucky’s been so tensed for a long time that he chokes on his spit when he opens his mouth. She waits patiently for his cough to subside. Once he can, Bucky rubs his hands over his pants and says, “Sorry. Yeah. I - I’m his friend.” Then he panics, “They said he’s all right and told me to wait here. Is he - Is everything -,”
“Have you had anything to eat yet?” She interrupts him, “Or drink maybe?”
He looks at her then; really looks at her, and he shakes his head. Something about her is too familiar so when she says, “Come,” he went with her.
She brings him to the canteen and buys him a sandwich and bottled water. “Eat,” she says. “If you’re gonna stick around, then you’ll need the energy.”
And that’s how Bucky met Sarah Rogers.
-
Steve is tired most of the time, but when he isn’t, he’s the brightest ball of sunshine.
His joy made Bucky bloom like Cherry Blossom in Spring. Every single smile and laughter; if Bucky could collect them all in a cup and drink, he would. But even then, he doesn’t think he’d get enough of it.
He loves him.
First as a friend, then as a boy who’d like to possess Steve; keep him to himself; all that smile and happiness, just for Bucky and only Bucky and he would never let anyone take his Stevie from him.
But then, something happens.
He gets invited to Steve’s little birthday party, and he claps as Steve blows out the candles. Hoots the loudest, laughs with Steve’s mom and then at one point, he’s sitting by her side pulling tissues for her to wipe her tears.
The room down the hallway got its door locked with Steve inside it.
“Sorry,” Mrs Rogers sniffles. It’s the fifth time she’d said it and Bucky has had enough.
“Seriously,” he tells her. “Stop worrying about it, Mrs Rogers.”
She laughs while a tear runs down her cheek at the same time. “Oh, God,” she sobs. “You shouldn’t be seeing this - Nobody, should be seeing this.”
Bucky keeps his mouth shut and hands over another ply.
Later that night, lying in his bed in the dark, Bucky thinks about what had happened. About Mrs Rogers kiss to Steve’s forehead, and her harmless words; “You’re growing into a handsome man, darling. Someday, somewhere, you’re gonna break someone’s heart.”
She wasn’t wrong. Hell, Bucky sat there thinking: he’s already breaking mine, Mrs Roger.
But that wasn’t what Steve thought. Whatever he did, it made him very angry. “Stop putting your hopes in me,” he snapped.
His poor ma, stunned, asked, “What?”
“Your hopes, ma,” Steve hissed. “You know none of that would happen. I won’t make it out of school -,”
And right then was when Bucky saw a mother break her own heart.
Her hand came in a flash, connecting sharp against Steve’s face; the loud slap echoed and the second she realised what she had done, Sarah Rogers cupped her mouth with that same hand - shaking -, her eyes wide in horror and her heart -
Hours later, Bucky could still hear it shatter into a million pieces. He realises too, they never did cut the cake tonight.
-
The next day, he doesn’t see Steve in school. He calls his phone, and calls Mrs Rogers when he doesn’t pick up. Her line goes dead too.
She texts later. Saying Steve’s in the hospital again.
Is he going to be okay? - Bucky writes her.
Ten minutes later, his phone flashes with; I don’t know.
-
He’s not okay.
They’ve got tubes stuffed down his windpipe, bags of fluids going into his veins and he’s looking bloated in the face.
The doctors keep hushing to Mrs Rogers. They tell her things Bucky doesn't understand; big words, complicated medical stuff and Bucky’s not so smart in the brain. He gets by with B in science at the very best. So he fills the chair by Stevie’s side and holds his hand instead.
When Bucky’s ma was around, she used to take him and his sister to Sunday church. She bought for them a bible each and knitted covers out of wool; one blue, one pink for Bucky and his sister, respectively.
After she passed, Bucky gave up faith and his belief. He’s stopped praying at all.
But right now, with the sound of Stevie’s heart echoing in beeps around them, he holds his hand and whispers what he remembers.
-
“He needs a new set of lungs,” Mrs Rogers says.
Seeing her in the hospital without her uniform on is very jarring. Bucky stares at her fingers curled around a paper cup holding coffee like they held all the answers.
They told themselves that the chairs in Steve’s room got too hard for their spine, so they’re  in the canteen for better cushioning.
Truth is, they couldn’t take the silence in there anymore. So they’re out here drowning their sorrow in the most crowded place in the hospital.
“You know, I’m very glad that he met you.”
Bucky looks up from her hand and meets her watery smile. She sniffles, “He knew he didn’t have a long time. So he walked alone. Never made any friends. I have the suspicion that he hates saying goodbye.”
Bucky’s throat aches so he swallows it down. Sarah Rogers lays her hand over Bucky’s and squeezes.
“Thank you,” she tells him. “For choosing my son.”
He knows then that she sees right through him.
“I love him,” he tells her truthfully; his heart too swollen with Steve to hide no longer.
She gives him another watery smile and pats his hand two short times, “I know.”
Bucky swallows the lump in his throat and says, “I never told him that.”
-
If; Bucky thinks.
If he could go back in time, he’d like to go back to the first day he met Steve and ask, “Would you go out on a date with me,” instead of offering friendship.
Or the first time he walked Steve out of the discharge suit so he could catch his frail hand, then his blue eyes and say, “Be my boyfriend Steve Rogers.”
Maybe a week before Steve’s birthday, when they were sitting in the park, with the late summer breeze caressing their skin and Steve had held his lips pressed the entire time.
They’d only known each other for two-and-a-half months then, but Bucky felt like he’d known Steve his entire lifetime. And he could tell that Steve was upset that evening.
He’d gotten off the phone with his mum that afternoon and back then Bucky didn’t know, but now, he could guess it was probably Mrs Rogers mentioning throwing him a birthday party.
If Bucky could go back to that evening, he wouldn’t just stop at making jokes for Steve to laugh at. He would take his hand in his and press his mouth to Steve’s cheek. He’d like to tell him, “You’re beautiful” and that, “You take my breath away, Stevie.”
He’d like to tell him in detail just how deeply he was in love with Steve. With the sound of birds chirping overhead and water lapping in the lake, he would like to have kissed the sorrow out of Steve’s lips.
But time travel is a fairy dream, and as it is for Bucky; he’s just another boy who’d missed his chance.
So he takes what he could get; he hoards minutes he could get with Stevie and treasures them dearly. Especially those without Sarah Rogers hovering by.
He tells him what he thinks; the weather, the new pair of shoes his nurse is wearing today, the little boy with a broken nose that reminded him of Steve and a helluva lot of ‘I wish’-es.
He tells him: “You taught me how to love selflessly.” Tells him: “I would have given anything to have you beside me, but now I just want you to stop hurting.”

Notes:
Okay, so here’s the thing.. Those smutty one shots and the one shot I wrote at Christmas about Tim Speedle and an ofc who was an old girlfriend? They were originally part of this huge backstory I came up with years ago too and like.. Given that I’m posting the backstory in bits for Greg, I thought why not do the same for Tim. So, if you were ever wondering where the OC from the christmas one shot came from.. This is her. A little more thought out and less vague. Anything not explained there, or in the smut I’ve already posted and plan to post eventually, will be explained here.. Because fuckkit.. Might as well make this a chapter thing too...
Pairing:
Tim Speedle x OFC, Sylvie.
Warnings:
Uhh.. Angst and unresolved feelings at first. Filth you’ve all already seen but more to come.. Maybe a little action and suspense? because I have plans for this one, mhm.
Oh. Right off the bat.. Ya’ll are not gonna like Ryan Wolfe in here at first if I’ve done my job properly. Because as it went on the show, he’s gonna be... hard to warm to here. I chose to keep him in and have him, as well as Cardoza and others, working on the shift opposite of Tim.

                                            ONE.
“Damn. Are you even gonna open this and humor a thought of going?” Eric waved around the class reunion invite that Tim had gotten in the mail and tossed on the counter. From across the room, Tim continued to dig around in the fridge, trying to find the case of beer he’d picked up on his way in.
He was refusing to answer the question.
Grabbing the case of beer, he sat them on the folding table they’d set up in the living room to play poker at and he took a beer out for himself, popping it against the counter, taking a long sip from the bottle.
Eric was already in the kitchen. Throwing together the traditional go to sandwich for their poker nights.
“Hey, that new guy’s not comin, right?”
“Wolfe? Yeah.. I think Walter with his big mouth invited him.”
“Goddamn it.” Tim swore, grumbling. “There’s just something off about the guy, I’m telling you.”
“Either way, it’s not our problem, man. He’s on the other shift, remember? Are you gonna answer my question, Speed, or do I have to drag the answer out of you, buddy?” Eric asked, giving Tim a pointed look.
Walter stepped into Tim’s apartment with Ryan coming into view right behind him. Tim’s jaw set and when Walter asked “Drag what answer out of Speed, man? What’d I miss?” as he wandered over to grab himself a beer and take a seat at the table, Tim shrugged. “It’s nothing, Walt. Forget Eric here ran his big fuckin mouth.”
“Doesn’t sound like nothin, you grouch.” Eric remarked, chuckling when Tim gave him what he thought was a silencing glare. As per usual, it did not work.
Ryan, the new guy, spoke up from over nearby Tim’s fridge, nodding to a photo booth strip held on by a magnet. “Is this your girl, Speed? Damn… you never mentioned you were seeing a model.” as he shook his head and let out a low and appreciative whistle.
Eric’s gaze settled on the photo strip and then back on Tim. Tim was all but trying not to explode. Getting defensive and touchy as he tended to whenever that particular strip of photos came into a conversation. He tried to give Ryan the subtlest shake of the head no, but it was too late.
Tim was already lost to thought, dwelling on the past.
Ryan eyed him, a brow raised. “Sore subject?” he questioned. Eric glared at Ryan and grumbled, giving Tim a silent look of agreement about the new guy. Tim nodded and smirked, mouthing back “Told you so, idiot.” before fixing his gaze on Ryan and shrugging. “Not really, no. We dated for a while.”
“High school and college.” Eric spoke up, ignoring Tim’s glare. “What? It’s true, right? That’s not just a while, Tim. That’s literally almost a decade, man.”
“Are you going to let me answer the guy Eric,or nah?” Tim asked, giving Eric another pointed glare as he took the worn deck of cards and shuffled them a few times, starting to deal. When Eric went quiet, Tim continued. “I took the job here. We broke up.”
“The man is lying. What happened was he didn’t ask her to come with and she didn’t try to stop him. So they never actually broke up. They just lost touch. And if you got that invite man, maybe…”
“Invite to what?” Ryan asked, an amused look as he fixed his gaze on Tim. So far, he got the suspicion that neither Tim nor Eric were particularly warming up to him, but it didn’t really matter. He was there because Walter asked if he wanted to play a few hands. And given that of everyone they worked with, so far Walter was the only real welcoming member of the forensics team on either shift, he wasn’t about to turn it down.
If nothing, he figured, he could show Eric and Tim up in a game or two and then leave… Unless the current conversation and it’s effect on Tim Speedle proved to be too interesting and amusing to continue to pass up.
“Class reunion. If I wanted to go back and listen to a bunch of douchebag jocks talk about their glory days, I’d go.” Tim answered, grumbling and shifting around in his chair, wondering when in the hell they were all going to get off the subject.
“She might be there man, you never know.”
“Eric, if it were going to work out in the first place, one of us would’ve said or done something. We wouldn’t have just left it the way it was.” Tim pointed out. Turning his attention to his hand as he rubbed his chin thoughtfully, brown eyes carefully surveying the other men around the table.
He smirked when he realized that of them all, the only one who was really good at keeping a consistent poker face was Eric. Then again, Tim thought to himself, Eric knows me too well. He knows I learned how to read him like a book years ago.
“She’s in Miami right now, actually. I saw her in the lobby of that high end hotel earlier today when our team got called to work that double homicide.” Ryan smirked as he just casually dropped the bombshell. Holding Tim’s gaze a few seconds. Trying to get a read on the guy, see if he might have a winning hand this round.
Tim nearly choked on the sip of Michelob he’d taken and eyed Ryan. The guy had to be trying to bullshit him. Probably to cover for his lack of a poker face, Tim mused, smirking at Ryan as he did so. “She lives in New York, buddy. You probably saw somebody who looked like her. I doubt you saw her.”
“Oh trust me… You don’t see a girl like that a time or two and confuse her with somebody else.” Ryan smirked right back, waiting on his words to hit the intended mark before dropping the bigger bombshell. “Her name is Sylvie, right? Because that’s what the frat boys hounding her for selfies and autographs called her.”
Just the slightest drop of Tim Speedle’s jaw was enough to make Ryan’s entire night. At this point, he was just genuinely enjoying having a rib at the guy. It wasn’t a secret around the lab that Eric Delko and Tim Speedle were nothing if not tight knit. That’s why it surprised more than a few people when the two seemed to just welcome Walter with open arms and no hesitation. And yet, they went above and beyond to cop snide attitudes with both himself and another man he worked with, Jesse Cardoza.
Tim eyed Ryan, a brow raised. Then he just shrugged. “It’s your play, Wolfe.” he barely managed to unclench his jaw enough to say it, but he did. He hoped that his tone would clearly indicate that for tonight, the topic was over. Even though he knew already that no thanks to Ryan’s words, tonight was going to be a long one for him…
Was she really in Miami? Or was Ryan just being an asshole as per usual?...
,, he’s gotta be saying it to get a rise and more of the story outta me… that’s it... unless she’s here. She does travel a lot, man.. Your ma is always real quick to tell you about every single move she makes when you call back home every Sunday.” Tim shoved the intrusive thought out of his head and it was immediately followed by another. ,, It’s been years and nothing but silence. Neither of us tried to keep in touch and it’s not like we couldn’t... But.. she did come to you in the hospital that first few nights... if she wanted you to know she was there, she would have stayed, just drop the what ifs or you’re going to lose your goddamn mind.”
Ryan made his call and Tim smirked, shoving some more chips into the middle of the table. “I see your King and raise you.”
Eric nearly spat his drink. He eyed Ryan, wondering if the guy had any idea of the wrath he’d probably just unleashed on himself by pushing buttons as openly as he had been. And he felt bad for the guy. Just because he worked with Cardoza, it didn’t necessarily make him the same.
He leaned in and offered up a quiet warning into Ryan’s ear when Tim got up to go and grab himself one of the Cuban sandwiches sitting on a plate near the stove. “You might want to lay off, Wolfe. Tim’s still hurting and bitter as hell about her, but too damn stubborn to do anything.”
“Which is fucking stupid, if you ask me.” Ryan answered, gazing across the room, smirking as he called out to Tim, “Hey, can I get another beer, man?”
Tim gave him the finger and flopped back into his chair, taking a few bites of his sandwich. “If you get up and get it, yeah. By all means.” Tim chuckled as Ryan gave him a dirty look, but after a little grumbling, he got up and grabbed himself a beer.
“What would you do if she was in town, man?” Eric was the one who asked the question.
Tim pretended not to hear him, but it wasn’t something that he wasn’t already wondering about himself. Did he even really need -or deserve for that matter, to do anything?
XXX
“6 am, sharp.”
“Rex if you remind me one more time about this stupid photo shoot, I swear to fuck, I’ll cancel. I came to Miami to relax. Not be hounded and have gigs booked for me. This was supposed to be my vacation, you’re literally not even supposed to be here.” I rolled onto my stomach on the hotel bed. The patio doors were open and the breeze blowing in off the ocean was relaxing.
Or it had been until Rex felt fit to show up and ruin things.
To be fair, I thought to myself, you’re the one who won’t just tell the guy that you’re not re-signing with his agency when your contract ends. But he seriously couldn’t take a fucking hint when I left on a red-eye and didn’t think he should know?
I was flipping through the television when I happened on a local news show. And they were showing an interview at Miami Dade PD about a pending case that was pretty huge in the media right now.
But that wasn’t what was catching my attention at all.
My eyes fixed on the five seconds glimpse I got of Tim as he hurried into the station. So handsome that I could feel my heart breaking all over again at the sight of him. I sighed and turned off the television.
I wound up on the balcony, staring down at the streets below. Wondering what he was doing right now.. Trying to imagine just how differently everything might have actually gone if I’d been braver back then. If I’d spoken up. Told him that I loved him and I didn’t want to lose touch or for us to be over.
I could’ve come with him.
And then I remembered the fear I felt the night my mom called me, fresh off the phone with his mom… The night I almost lost him.
And I remembered the feeling I felt when I finally made it to his side, a whole two days later. Seeing him lying there in that bed, hovering between life and death. The fear that he’d wake up and he’d want me to leave over-ruling every basic instinct in me that was telling me to stay. Take care of him. At the very least, get some closure. I didn’t deserve him then and the fact remained.
I don’t deserve him now, either. And too much time has gone by... I’d lost any right to tell him how I felt now. He probably had his own happy life. A better one. Who would I be to come in and lay it all on the line and destroy that?
If I’m being truly honest with myself here, I’ve never actually deserved Tim Speedle. And I’ve always known it. It’s why I had to let him go back then and a big reason why I was fighting myself so hard to keep from going to him now.
But I wanted him so badly. I needed him.
Everything felt wrong without him. I tried to move on, I tried convincing myself he was a high school and college boyfriend and my best childhood friend before that, but deep down, I knew.
Tim Speedle was, is and will always be, the man I love.
But I’m not good enough for him and hopefully, he’s moved on by now. God I hope he’s happy.
The thought had me taking a few shaky breaths and wiping away a tear that had been lingering in my eyes, threatening to roll down my cheek. I wandered back inside and even though I knew it wasn’t a good idea… I found myself searching his name.
Biting my lip as my heart skipped a beat or two when I realized that his phone number was still the same. And it was listed, not private.
I’m not exactly sure why, but I went to my contacts. And for a good ten minutes, I hovered over his name… I actually went as far as to pull up the conversation box and read over the last conversation we had. Before I realized it, I was crying again and that empty feeling was creeping back in…
,, you came all the way to Miami. You can’t keep living like this…” my brain taunted me. And then, another thought crept in, ,, if you wanted him, you shouldn’t have just let him leave without saying so. All you had to do was tell him you wanted to come. What, were you expecting some flowery proposal? For him to drop the chance of a lifetime for you? And what if he had, huh? What then? You know he would’ve hated you and by now, you two would be over… Nobody ever stays...Your own father couldn’t even be bothered to stick around, Syl… The man has probably forgotten all about you by now.”  and before my mind got any darker, I slipped off the bed and grabbed my favorite jacket. Maybe taking a ride down to the Keys would help me get this off my mind. Or driving a few blocks over, going to the beach to look at the stars.
All I did know was that suddenly, it felt like the very vast and open space in this 5 star hotel room was rapidly closing all around me.

“Tonight at six. Don’t be late.”
“Ma,” Hyunjae lets out a tired sigh, ruffling his locks in the process, “I’m really not interested and I--”
“You’re almost thirty! You should be getting married by now!”
“Ma, blind dates don’t help people get together. It’s just a lousy way for singles to mingle.”
“Exactly why you should go.”
“Ma.”
“Please, Hyunjae? She’s such a good girl. I met her and her mother for tea yesterday and her mother seems so keen to get her daughter married off to an honourable man! Now, I don’t know about honourable, but you’re funny. Surely, you can charm her socks off?”
“Ma look, I--” Hyunjae frowns upon realizing what his mother is saying, “hey, excuse me? I am so honorable! But anyway, that’s besides the point. I’m not interested--I said I’m not--Hello? HELLO?!”
Pulling the phone away, he is faced with a blank screen.
“OH MY GOD!” his nostrils flare, “she just hung up! ON ME!”
“I can hear you just fine,” comes Juyeon’s mumble from his respective desk.
Hyunjae swivels around with a look of growing horror at the fact that this time, there’s no getting out of the mess that his mother has just put him in, “I’m almost thirty, and my mother decides that it’s the greatest idea to set me up like I can’t get my life together. Can you believe that?! The outrage?!”
“You don’t have your life together,” Juyeon is quick to point out.
“Juyeon, I really don’t need your sass right now.”
“So are you? Going to that blind date?” Juyeon asks, a smirk curving his lips upwards as Hyunjae lets out a loud, insufferable sigh like the world has collapsed onto his shoulders, “Do I have a choice?”
“I guess you don’t.”
“I guess I don’t.”
-------
Shit. Shit. Shit.
It’s only the first date and Hyunjae is already late. Not that he cares, not really. Except that this girl will probably go tattle to her mother about his tardiness, which will then prompt his own mother to give him another earful about not being the perfect gentleman that she has raised him to be.
It is with that particular train of thought that he practically bursts through the cafe called ‘Yours Truly’. Truly boring, in his personal opinion. Trying his best to swallow mouthfuls of air, scanning the room and walking in until he notices a lone woman, seemingly bored and looking out of the window as though there are other things preoccupying her mind.
He approaches reluctantly, “Er--Are you Do Sarang?”
The woman’s face swivels to face him. He has to admit, right there and then, that she’s not all bad looking.
“Yes,” she says slowly, as if she’s gauging his personality, “you’re Lee Jaehyun?”
He extends a hand, “call me Hyujae. That’s the name I go by, most of the time.”
She nods, and he barely has time to settle himself into his seat when she tells him, “so what excuse do you want to tell your mother?”
He blinks at her, ‘huh?”
“You can say I’m boring. I only read books as a hobby and I love baking in my spare time, except I burn the kitchen. You think that’s bad enough? Or maybe tell her I have bad breath or something,” she keeps up the stream of babble with so much gusto that he can barely keep up. His mind churns the words inside his head, before reality suddenly kicks in.
“Wait--” he raises a hand to stop her, “you mean, you’re trying to find ways to sabotage this?”
“Of course I am. Why? Were you actually--” cupping her hand over her mouth then, her eyes widen in shock, “Oh no, were you actually genuinely interested? Oh my gosh, I am--”
“NO!” He hollers a little too loudly that causes a few glances to glare daggers in his direction. Flashing a guilty smile while scrunching his shoulders up, he lowers his voice and continues, “no, I mean of course I’m not interested in blind dating. I just--I wasn’t sure.”
“Okay great. Just so that we’re on the same page.”
“Er--Sure.”
“Cool. What shall I say about you? That you sweat a lot? Or you have AIDS? Or--”
“I do not have AIDS,” Hyunjae quickly rectifies.
Sarang laughs. She does have a nice laugh, he thinks to himself as she says, “you don’t seem like the type to have AIDS.” “Just tell your mom that I’m too noisy and talk too much. Or that I--er-- that I’m just too quiet. Too bland. Boring. You don’t like that.”
“Okay, deal.”
“Deal,” it’s at this particular moment that his stomach growls, causing Sarang’s lips to curl up in amusement. Hyunjae bites the inside of his cheek as he tries to restrain his own grin. He looks down for a moment, before finally meeting her eyes once more.
“So...since we’re already here. Do you want to grab lunch?”
-------
“So how did your date go?” Mae asks.
A few days have gone by since Hyunjae’s supposed blind date, much to Mae’s excitement. Considering that she had been one of the potential candidates that the former’s mother had already listed down, she was glad that Mrs. Lee is finally opening up her horizons and allowing more women to enter Hyunjae’s life. Not that he needs any help at all, considering that he’s always been a charmer with the ladies.
To celebrate, she had all asked them to gather at the local snack they usually frequent -- a habit from their earlier college days that seemed to have stuck -- and had ordered an array of pork belly, raw beef and chicken strips for the occasion. Radishes and Kimchi plates littered their entire table and servings of raw pieces of lettuce were left still untouched as they waited impatiently for the meat to cook through.
Hyunjae has also noticed how she tries her best to stay as far away as it’s physically possible from Kevin, and while it might not appear that the latter is ruffled by her actions, Hyunjae has known the said man for too long not to notice the flash of hurt flickering across his face.
“She’s actually really cool,” Hyunjae says upon realizing that he still hasn’t answered her question, “she isn’t interested in blind dating either. So we’re both just finding excuses to please the mothers.”
“Wait, but--” Juyeon frowns, “you just said she’s cool. Why not just hang out with her?” “Because that would just mean that my mother was right, and I’m not giving her the satisfaction.”
“What an idiot,” Juyeon mutters behind his glass of soju and Hyunjae scowls at him, “piss off, lover boy.”
“Alright alright, everybody calm down. I have meat,” Mae interrupts them by placing the grilled pieces onto their plates. As she does so, her arm brushes against Kevin’s shoulder, and she jumps back as though she just got burnt.
“S-Sorry,” she mumbles out. It doesn’t take an expert to notice the fact that she’s blushing.
Hyunjae clears his throat as a way to distract them from the sudden atmosphere, sending Kevin a pointed look across the table while a mindless Juyeon digs in without hesitation.
“How’s your relationship going, Juyeon?” Mae says a little too loudly, an obvious attempt to divert the attention.
“It’s going great. We--We really understand each other,” Juyeon says with a small, hesitant smile like he’s trying to hide his happiness.
“You are so whipped,” Hyunjae singsongs.
“At least my mother doesn’t have to set me up,” Juyeon shoots back.
“OOOH,” echo Mae and Kevin, who accidentally catch each other’s eyes before looking away. Though they’re not fast enough, causing Juyeon to blurt out, “What is going on between you two?”
“NOTHING!” Both screech at the same time before shooting each other weird looks.
“Sure doesn’t seem like it though,” Juyeon mutters loud enough for them to hear, while Hyunjae grabs the meat off his plate and stuffs it in his mouth.
“Speaking of relationships,” Hyunjae continues when Mae hands over the tongs. He puts some fresh meat on the grill, passes some condiments down to Kevin and Juyeon, “Mae, does Changmin not know what boundaries are?”
“What?” Kevin’s head snapped to attention at the same time that Juyeon said, “what happened with Changmin?”
“Nothing happened with Changmin,” Mae shoots Hyunjae a look, “stop hyping them up like that.”
“Oh yeah? Cause you guys were getting pretty friendly when I spotted you in the elevator.”
“He was trying to untangle my staff card, you dumbass,” she replies through a mouthful of lettuce and pork. Gulping it down, she continues, “stop making the situation something that it’s not. Also, what the fudge were you doing in the Cancer Ward?”
“He was practically breathing the same air as you! How am I supposed to interpret that?!”
“What? In the elevator? When?” Kevin’s eyes snap right to left in confusion.
“It’s nothing!” Mae answers with flushed cheeks and unable to meet his eyes, “it’s really nothing! And Hyunjae, stop inventing stuff!”
“I am not! He was so close to you I would have socked him one if I--”
He gets cut off by Juyeon stuffing a roll of lettuce-wrapped meat into his mouth, his words finishing in a gargle as he scowls at Mae with his cheeks still puffed like a sullen child. Mae leans back in her seat, wishing that the ground would swallow her up just so that she does not have to look at Kevin’s face ever again.
It’s bad enough that she knows he has a crush on her, bad enough that she secretly harbours the same feelings and isn’t sure how to express them. Adding Changmin to the mix will only provoke him and create a havoc of misunderstandings that she really does not wish to get into right now, and Hyunjae’s big ass mouth is not helping.
She waits until Kevin and Juyeon go off their separate ways with an excuse that she’s riding with Hyunjae this time, for he’s going back for his night shift at the hospital. As soon as she gets into his car and slams the door closed, Mae proceeds to whack him across the back of his head.
“Ouch, Jesus woman,” Hyunjae rubs at the sore spot with a grimace, “what was that for?”
“You idiot,” Mae hisses, “why in the world are you talking about Changmin in front of Kevin? You know how insecure he gets!”
“Relax Mae. I was doing that to rile him up for you.” “Well don’t. I don’t like it.”
“Hey, I have good intentions okay? Next thing you know, he’s probably going to get off his lazy ass and confess,“ he stops at a red light and cups his face with his hands in a dramatic pout, “and who are you going to thank when that happens?”
“You’re not getting any credit for that.”
“You’re so mean.”
They finally pull up to the Hospital main entrance, before the man nods at her, “go on. I’ll go find a parking spot.”
“Do I have to say thank you even though I’m pissed at you?” Mae asks, grudgingly picking up her bag.
“Do you want me to tell my mother how mannerless you are?” he pauses, “actually, maybe that’ll stop her from marrying us off.”
Despite their earlier argument, a smile creeps up her lips before exploding into a full-out grin. She salutes him, “see you on the other side.”
“You’re talking as if we’re going to die.”
“We might as well die, if we don’t save our patients.”
“Wise words Mae,” he calls out as she walks away, and then chuckles when she sticks her arm out in a back-handed wave.
--------
I gotta say that Mae and Hyunjae’s interactions make me go AHDFH sometimes cause they fight like siblings and it’s the cutest thing. Who agrees with me?

“Last chance to back out, bud,” Neal said, glancing over at Henry as he stood near the door of their hotel room. “You’re sure you’re okay with us moving here?”
Henry nodded, grinning. “Positive, Dad! It’ll be a new adventure, like you and Mom always talked about.”
Emma couldn’t help but grin slightly, even if there was a knot in her stomach that threatened to make her scream that they were going back to Boston and to forget this little town. It would have been an adjustment to not having Audrey and Snoopy around, but they could have made it work - right?
But Emma didn’t say anything, only giving Neal a quick peck on the lips. “Be careful, don’t rush yourself getting everything packed.”
“I’ll be fine. I’ve already emailed a few friends to help me out,” Neal said, squeezing her hand before ruffling Henry’s hair. “Good luck, listen to your mom, and don’t start complaining about your teacher before you’ve given them a chance, alright?”
“Yeah, yeah, I won’t,” Henry said with a roll of his eyes.
“I mean it, moving is a big deal. We don’t want to start off on the wrong foot.”
“Especially in a small town like this,” Emma grumbled, before sighing. “C’mon kid. You’re lucky the superintendent was willing to meet with us on a Sunday.”
She gave Neal another quick kiss before heading out with Henry.
The school complex seemed enormous, although Emma supposed that’s what happened in these small towns - they didn’t have to travel miles from school to school because there weren’t a ton of shops and houses in the way.
She was surprised to see a woman standing at the top step, waiting for them.
“Good morning! You must be Mrs. Cassidy,” she said with a wide smile. “And this must be Henry.”
“Ms. Jackson, right?” Emma said as Henry gave a nervous wave. “Thank you for meeting with us on a Sunday.”
“Please, call me Olivia. And it’s no trouble. It’s not often we get new students enrolled here, so this is really exciting for us!” Olivia opened the door, guiding them inside. “Come right on in and we’ll get you set up. When we’re done with Henry’s schedule and the other paperwork I’ll give you a tour.”
“Sounds great,” Emma hummed, glancing around. It seemed like any other school she’d been in. A little older, even than the Boston schools Henry and Audrey attended, but it was that same sickly-sweet charming that the rest of Storybrooke seemed to have.
Olivia’s office seemed normal though, and Emma felt herself relax slightly as she began rapidly typing on her computer.
“Alright then, Henry. I received your records a few minutes ago from Boston - ”
“That quickly?” Emma interrupted. “Sorry, I just didn’t expect them to be working on a Sunday.”
Olivia shrugged. “When something like this pops up, sometimes the system actually moves like we want it to. Anyway, his records and notes from his teachers indicate he’s a fan of art, is that right?”
Henry nodded. “It’s my favorite class. And I was in a special art camp this summer.”
“That’s wonderful, Henry! I think I have an opening in the perfect class.” A few more clicks of her keyboard, the sound of a printer, and she was sliding a schedule across the desk. “You’ll be in Miss Blanchard’s class. She does lots of art projects during her lessons to help students learn in a unique way.”
“We met her yesterday!” Henry chirped. “She seemed really nice.”
Emma couldn’t help but let out a small sigh of relief, knowing Henry would be with Mary-Margaret. “She did. She was volunteering at the hospital when we brought Audrey in.”
“Oh! Yes, that’s right, I heard about Audrey’s return. It’s a miracle, really. She’s been gone as long as I can remember…” Olivia trailed off, seemingly lost in thought, before the bright smile returned as she reached into her desk. “So here’s some information on the schools, and a map for Henry in case he needs it. You can find the pieces for the uniform pretty much anywhere, so don’t worry about that. Although, I will need his size for the sweater.”
Henry soured a little at the mention of a uniform.
“He’s a medium,” Emma said.
Olivia nodded, rising to her feet. “I’ll grab one out of storage while we’re on our tour, if you’re ready?”
“Let’s do it.”
“The main menu for lunch rotates every day, and we’re lucky to have a local farmer that donates much of the produce we use,” Olivia explained as they wandered past a display of science fair projects. “Kids are welcome to eat inside or outside, weather permitting, and we have monitors in both areas.”
“That’s cool! We weren’t allowed to eat lunch outside in Boston,” Henry explained.
Emma couldn’t help but raise a brow. “How’d you swing the farmer donating produce to the school?”
“Well, it helps that he’s married to be one of our teachers,” Olivia explained with a laugh. “Daphne teaches high school, so maybe in a few years Henry will be in her class. Or maybe Audrey. I’m going to be taking her schedule and information to the hospital later.”
“I can take it to her, if you want. Henry and I are going to the hospital later this afternoon,” Emma offered.
Olivia hummed, tapping her finger against her cheek. “Well, since you are technically listed as Audrey’s parent on her school records, that will be fine. I’ll get her schedule and information settled when we head back to the office. Do you happen to know what size she wears?”
“Sounds like a plan. And she’s a medium as well.”
“I’ll get her sweater when we grab Henry’s. Miss Blanchard’s room is - oh, it looks like she’s here. That’s strange,” Olivia frowned as they approached the open classroom door. “Mary-Margaret?”
Something thudded to the ground, and there was a startled yelp.
“Superintendent Jackson! I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize you were here too.”
“I’m showing Mrs. Cassidy and her son around… what brings you here?”
“I’ve been looking for my credit card. I tore my apartment apart but it’s nowhere to be found. So I thought I would check here.”
Olivia blinked. “Oh, I see. I’ll run the security tapes and see if anything’s come up. Nothing has been turned in at the Lost and Found, but that doesn’t mean no one has it.”
“Thank you, Olivia. I appreciate it.”
Emma kept a hand on Henry’s shoulder as they lingered in the doorway. “Hi, Mary-Margaret, I don’t know if you remember - ”
Mary-Margaret smiled slightly. “You’re the family from the hospital. What brings you to the schools though?”
“You’re my new teacher,” Henry announced, glancing around the classroom. “Which one is going to be my desk?”
“I’m - sorry?” Mary-Margaret asked, stepping back as Henry pushed further into the room. “His new teacher?”
Emma sighed, rubbing the back of her neck. “Sorry about that. We’re uh, moving to Storybrooke. He was put in your class.”
“Oh! Well come on in then. I’ll get you caught up on what we’re learning about. Henry, this will be your desk right here,” she said, guiding Henry to a desk near the window. “I’ve been teaching them how to build birdhouses. It helps with building empathy and their math skills.”
“Combining art and math. I wish I had a teacher like you when I was growing up. Maybe I would actually like math,” Emma joked.
Mary-Margaret gave her a weak smile. “Math isn’t my favorite subject either, but just know if Henry finds he’s struggling, the high school has a great tutoring program.”
“You guys sure thought of everything,” Emma remarked.
“Well, we figured it’d be a good way for the older kids to earn a little credit, and help the younger students out. It’s also part of the after-school program.”
Emma smiled. “That all sounds great. It’s really making me feel better that Henry’s still going to get a good education, even if we’re not in Boston.”
“Storybrooke is… like a fairytale, Mrs. Cassidy. We may be small, but we prioritize education,” Olivia explained. “Shall we continue the tour?”
Why did her phrasing sound so odd to Emma? Still, she managed a smile. “Sounds good. C’mon kid.”
They saw the playground, the computer lab, and the library before Olivia led them to a small shop area. “And here we are. Two medium Storybrooke sweaters.” They were presented as if they were made of gold, which had Emma biting back a laugh as she took them. “We’ll just get Audrey’s paperwork all settled and that’ll be it. Unless you had any further questions?”
Emma wracked her brain. “No, I think that’s it. But I’ll contact you if I think of anything.”
“Fantastic,” Olivia said, returning to the office and setting up the same paperwork and schedule for Audrey. “It was very nice to meet you, Mrs. Cassidy. We’ll see you tomorrow at 8:30 sharp then, Henry?”
“Yes Miss Jackson.”
Emma guided him out of the office, hearing Olivia answer a phone call as they disappeared down the hall.
“Lacey, what’s up? Yeah I can…”
---
Madalena was going to kill Rumplestiltskin if she ever got out of here.
No. When she got out of here. Because she would get out of here, of course. She was the Dark Queen Madalena after all! She could get out of here on her own… even if she had failed so far and she had no idea exactly how long she had even been trapped in this godforsaken book.
Her Handsome Hero. What a dumb name for a book. What a ridiculous idea for a plot.
If she had to watch Gideon the Great cut a spider in half one more time, she was going to scream.
And she had screamed multiple times already.
The worst part of living in a book was there being no plot for Madalena. The author hadn’t put a Queen Madalena in it, so she was relegated to being in the back of crowd scenes, completely ignored and unable to do anything to end the sieges that plagued this village.
Not that she wanted to be a hero, of course. No, Madalena just wanted to save her own skin and had been caught in the crossfire one too many times.
“Fear not, Duchess Prudence, I, Gideon, shall slay the evil Sorceress!” the hero of the story says, dramatically flourishing his hands.
Madelena rolled her eyes and made a face. Just once, she’d like to be able to turn Gideon or one of the other townspeople into a toad, or a dog, or something. Anything to make this more bearable.
“Madalena?” a voice suddenly said from above. That wasn’t right, and suddenly everything froze. “I don’t recall you being in the story before.”
“Hello?!”
Why could she move? Who was that voice? It was new, didn’t come from any of the stale creatures around her… had someone from the real world finally picked up the book?
“Madalena, I free you from these pages.”
She didn’t have time to think before she felt herself being yanked up, landing hard on a carpeted floor.
“Oh gods, are you okay?” came the same voice, only this time, it was much closer.
Madelena felt the world tilting for a moment, before everything stilled and she lifted her head from the carpet, heaving in deep breaths and staring down at her hands. Free. She was… free? She pushed herself up into a sitting position, feeling the world tilt slightly again as she glanced around the room.
She knew this place. Rumplestiltskin’s library.
She was free.
“Erm… hello?” the voice asked again, and Madelena jumped, glancing over. “Sorry, are you okay?”
That was a loaded question. Was she okay?
“I…” her voice was raspy. “How long… was I in there?”
“I don’t know… you’re Madalena of Keburg, aren’t you?”
Her head shot over to the young woman who had spoken, eyes wide. They still spoke of her? Good. Then it must not have been all that long.
“I am. They deposed me two years ago.”
The woman’s eyes widened, and Madalena’s heart sank. “No… not two years ago. They just celebrated their Decade of Peace.”
Decade? Decade?!
“I’ve been in that book for eight years…” Madalena whispered. “Oh my gods…”
“I’m glad I got you out of there. What happened?”
Madalena rose to her feet, brushing invisible lint off her gown. “That bastard Rumplestiltskin locked me in there. All I wanted to do was learn some dark magic to take control of a kingdom, that’s not too much to ask for, right?”
“Er… I’m probably not the best person to ask about that, but you’re not the only evil queen in the realm.”
“Oh, no, please don’t call me evil, just dark,” Madalena said, raising a brow. “Who are you, anyway?”
“My name is Belle. I’m Rumplestiltskin’s housekeeper.”
“May the gods have mercy on you then,” Madalena said, rubbing her head. “Thank you for freeing me, Belle.”
“You should hurry and get out of here. Rumplestiltskin will be home any moment.”
Madalena nodded, raising her hand to disappear, before she paused. “I don’t know where to go. I can’t go back to Keburg, I can’t stay in this kingdom…”
“I think you’ll find allies here if you stay off Rumplestiltskin’s radar. He’s not exactly the most popular man here. Now hurry, go!”
“Thank you again for freeing me, Belle. I’ll make sure to leave you in peace when I come to power,” Madalena said, vanishing in a cloud of black smoke. Where she would go, she didn’t know, but if what Belle said was true, perhaps there was a chance for her to find allies.
Maybe she could take down Rumplestiltskin and take his place.
That might be nice.
She landed in the middle of the woods, on some sort of carriage path. No matter which direction she looked, she couldn’t see Rumplestiltskin’s castle. Hopefully, that meant she was far enough away. Now all she had to do was find some food or shelter. Or, find some people to give her food and shelter. She was still a queen after all… even if she had fallen.
A small village wasn’t too far from where she’d landed, and Madalena sighed, pushing herself into the nearest pub.
“The next round is on me!” a man shouted, lifting an empty stein into the air. “Grimsund shall prosper once again!”
There was a roar from the crowd, and Madalena gasped as a mug was shoved into her hand from the nearest barmaid.
“Oh, I - ”
“No need to worry, Prince James paid for this round,” she said with a grin. “He’s just come back from a giant hunt.”
A prince, huh?
Madalena could work with that.
“Thank you, then,” she said to the barmaid. “Is that him over there?”
“Aye, that’s him, but if you think you’ve got a chance with him, you may want to temper your expectations. The rumor is he’s got a different woman in his bed every month,” she explained. “Truth is, I don’t know if he’ll ever commit to one woman, even if the king forces an arrangement.”
Ah, so it was that sort of deal, hm? Fine. Madalena could take out the competition.
“I see, thank you kindly,” she said, sipping at her beer before sauntering over to the prince and dropping into the seat across from him.
He raised a brow. “And who might you be.”
“I might be Queen Madalena of Keburg, I might be just a figment of your imagination,” she smirked.
James furrowed his brow. “Weren’t you deposed?”
“Details, details.”
James looked her up and down. “Well, what can I do for fellow royalty?”
“That’s just it. I’m not exactly royal anymore, and I just spent eight years trapped in a book thanks to the Dark One. As much as I hate to do this, I need help.”
Setting his much on the table, James leaned forward. “And what can you do for me?”
Madalena waved her hand, magic gathering in it. “What do you need?”
---
“Here you go, Emma, grilled cheese and onion rings. Hey - you alright?” Ruby asked, setting the plate down in front of her.
Emma rubbed her eyes and looked up from the newspaper in front of her. “Yeah, thanks. I’m just trying to find a place for us to live, and it’s not like there are a lot of options here.”
Ruby rolled her eyes. “You’re telling me. If there were more affordable houses here, I’d have moved out of the bed and breakfast a long time ago. That, and if Granny would ever let me meet with Victoria…”
The last part was said in a mumble, which had Emma raising a brow. “What do you mean?”
Ruby looked around, before digging through her apron and pulling out a card. “Victoria Belfrey-Polastel. She’s a realtor in town. Wanted to buy Granny’s not too long ago and make it more modern, instead of a dumpy diner and bed and breakfast. Granny hit the roof and refused to ever serve her, but she gave me a card if I ever needed it, but you and your family need it more than I do, so here. Just… don’t tell Granny I told you about her.”
Emma took the card, sliding it into her wallet. “Thanks Ruby. I owe you one.”
“So long as you don’t tell Granny, consider us even.”
And that was how Emma found herself sitting in a way too spotless, modern office that afternoon after making sure Henry didn't need anything.
Seriously, was this Victoria thinking she was selling to celebrities and the too-wealthy in New York City? What was with this place?
“Mrs. Cassidy, welcome.”
Emma briefly considered reminding the woman that her name was Emma, but decided against it. “Thank you for meeting with me. I’m sorry it’s on such short notice.”
“Oh no need to apologize for something like that! This is my job after all, and it’s not often I get a client with a family that needs to be moved. Everyone here just seems to be so settled that they never go anywhere. But what sort of house were you and your family looking for?” Victoria said, flourishing a pen and smoothing out the notepad in front of her.
Emma paused. What were they looking for in a house? They hadn’t had many options when it came to apartments, aside from the location and the spectacular front door that Emma was going to miss.
“Er… at least three bedrooms, although four would be ideal, I guess, so Neal and I can have an office,” she started, running her tongue along her teeth in an attempt to think. “Maybe a nice yard. We’re from Boston and our son has never had a yard to play in.”
Victoria was nodding, scribbling away. “I have two daughters. I get it.”
“Maybe something updated? I don’t know if we can handle moving all of our stuff and finding out the house needs new floors or a new bathroom.”
“Ah!” Victoria suddenly said, tossing the pen onto her desk and rapidly typing on her computer. “I have the perfect house for you, Mrs. Cassidy. 715 Tenth Street. Four bedrooms, two bathrooms, nicely updated and a large backyard. It’s an updated Victorian, and one of the best Storybrooke can offer. We can drive over now, if you want to see it?”
Emma nodded, her throat dry.
But Victoria was right, 715 Tenth Street was what she would call perfect for that family, and she signed on the dotted line in the spotless kitchen - her kitchen, and blinked in shock as Victoria passed her the keys.
“Welcome home, Mrs. Cassidy.”

Cherry Coke Special: Thirteen
“You’re sure about this, Y/N?” Bucky asked, watching you put your hair up in a bun.
“It’s a job,” You tell him, shrugging, “And I cut my teeth on worse conditions.”
Bucky frowned and watched you in the mirror. He knew this hadn’t been a job you really wanted. But your entanglement in the current turf war that was going on had had a significant stain on your reputation. It was the only place in the City that would hire you. And it was a hospital. A damn State Hospital. “Baby girl,” he protested.
“Bucky, I can’t lay around anymore. I’ve gotta have something to do,” you tell him, picking up your sneakers.
He runs his fingers through his hair, “Baby,” he protests, “I get it. I do. But... do you have to work there?”
“It’s just a foot in the door Bucky,” you sigh, feeling frustrated. “The sad truth is, everything that happened with Rory, and with you trashed my reputation... and people talk. People talk a lot. My success rate? My talent? None of that matters if I’m a drama magnet. It’s a liability suit looking to happen. It’s a minor miracle the hospital would take me.”
“What if you get hurt?” Bucky challenges.
“Workman’s comp,” you remind, “What happens if you get shot? What happens if any of the shit you’re paranoid about happens?”
“I don’t like it,” he growls.
“And I don’t like sitting at home all day. So here we are.”
You fold your arms and stare at him, jaw set, and Nova comes to sit between your feet. Sitting between you and Bucky. Even if she loves Bucky, she doesn’t love him as much as she loves and wants to protect you. You’re her mom. The Alpha Female in the house. Even if she’s a puppy, all stiff legs and too big ears and feet, she’s gonna do what she’s been trained to do and get in the way.
Bucky sighs, “If you get hurt, you’re not going back.”
“You can’t stop me,” you tell him warningly.
“I can,” he acknowledged gently, aware that he’d stepped into some dangerous territory from your tone of voice, “I just want you safe, baby.”
“Ships are safe in harbor, but that’s now what ships are for,” you tell him.
“You’re not a ship. You’re my girl,” he says, careful not to approach you too quickly, backing off when Nova stands up. In the back of his mind, he’s dimly aware that perhaps getting you a guard dog might not have been his best plan, but. He’s also glad you have her. “You’re my girl, and it’s my job to protect you.”
“I’m not a damsel in distress,” you sigh, “I’m a grown fucking woman.”
“And you’re mine,” Bucky says helplessly. He hates the look on your face right now. He hates that you feel like you have to do this. He hates that you’re doing this. He just. He wants you to stay home and do pretty girl things.
You pinch the bridge of your nose and turn away, “No one’s saying that I’m not yours,” you tell him, “What I am doing is going to work. I’ve got $12 left in my bank account, and I gotta start over somewhere.”
Bucky feels a muscle in his jaw tick. He’s not used to this much opposition. Someone as stubborn as him. He’d told you and told you and told you to use your credit card. And you had. Once. To buy yourself a few new books. He watches you walk out of the bedroom. He hears you telling Nova goodbye, kissing her nose and telling her to be a good girl. And his chest hurts. He feels like an asshole starting a fight with you before work. Picking at you like that. He knows that you don’t want to do this. And he respects that you don’t want to live off of him. Even if you don’t hardly ask for anything to start with. He groans and rests his forehead on his palm for a second, he should have just told you that he loved you and to have an excellent first day. That he’d bring you lunch.
He got to his feet and sighed, looking at Nova lying in front of the door looking lost. “Nova,” he said, smiling, “I know. But Ma’s coming home. I promise.”
The puppy looks up at him with a huff and lays her head on her paws, and Bucky shakes his head, “You and your ma are both stubborn,” he scolds fondly. The dog doesn’t move her head, intent, seemingly, on willing you into coming home.
“C’mon, baby,” he coaxed, picking up her leash, “You can come to work with me today.”
The puppy looked at him, big brown eyes slightly accusing, but when he clipped the leash to her collar, she followed. Behaving. Or at least, trying to behave the way she did for you on the way to his office.
___________
When he walked into the building, Nova at his side, Natasha looked up from where she was giving someone the tongue lashing of a lifetime.
“You’re late,” she scolded.
“Yeah, yeah,” he sighed, mentally adding her to the list of women that were currently irritated at him. You. His mother. And now, Natasha. Though the reason his mother was annoyed at him was sort of connected to you. And the fact that he moved you into his house and marriage hadn’t been discussed.
He supposed it should be heartwarming that his ma liked you as much as she did. Enough that she was probably gonna cook dinner for you tonight so you could relax after your first day back at work. But right now, after the nagging phone call, he just got, and the conversation that he had with you before you left made him feel raw.
Natasha fell into step beside him and sighed, “Trouble in paradise?” she asked.
“Nothing that couldn’t have been avoided if I shut my fucking mouth,” he said, letting Nova off her leash so she could curl up on her pillow.
Natasha quirked an eyebrow, waiting for elaboration, and Bucky sighed, “Y/N started her job today.”
“I know,” she said, “She sent me a picture of her new office.”
“Yeah, well... I- I pissed her off this morning.”
“Bucky,” Nat scolded, “Christ. You know-”
“Yeah,” he snapped, “I fucking know.”
“Look, Bucky,” Natasha sighed, tone gentling, “This is the price you pay for having a girl that has her shit together. You have to bring your fucking A-game. All the time.”
Bucky shook his head and groaned, “I just- I just want her to be happy.”
“No,” Nat corrected, “You want her to be happy in a way that makes you happy.”

#Catherine Deneuve Portrait
Cannes 1984
Contax RTS  Carl Zeiss T* Tessar 200mm f/3,5 Agfapan 100
Catherine Fabienne Dorléac (born 22 October 1943), known professionally as Catherine Deneuve , is a French actress as well as an occasional singer, model and producer, considered one of the best European actresses and the greatest French actress of all time.. She gained recognition for her portrayal of icy, aloof and mysterious beauties for various directors, including Luis Buñuel, François Truffaut and Roman Polanski. In 1985, she succeeded Mireille Mathieu as the official face of Marianne, France's national symbol of liberty. A 14-time César Award nominee, she won for her performances in Truffaut's The Last Metro (1980), for which she also won the David di Donatello for Best Foreign Actress, and Régis Wargnier's Indochine (1992).
Deneuve made her film debut in 1957 and first came to prominence in Jacques Demy's 1964 musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. She went on to star in such films as Repulsion (1965), Donkey Skin (1970), Belle de Jour (1967), Tristana (1970) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967) opposite her sister, the actress Françoise Dorléac. She was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress for Belle de Jour, and the Academy Award for Best Actress for Indochine. She also won the 1998 Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for Place Vendôme. Other notable English-language films include The April Fools (1969), Hustle (1975), The Hunger (1983) and Dancer in the Dark (2000).
Deneuve was born Catherine Fabienne Dorléac in Paris, the daughter of French stage actors Maurice Dorléac (1901–1979) and Renée Simonot (b. 1911). Deneuve has two sisters, Françoise Dorléac (1942–1967) and Sylvie Dorléac (born 14 December 1946), as well as a maternal half-sister, Danielle, whom their mother had out of wedlock in 1937 with Aimé Clariond, but who was later adopted by Maurice and took his surname. Deneuve was her mother's maiden name, which she chose for her stage name, in order to differentiate herself from her sisters. Deneuve attended Catholic schools .
Deneuve made her film debut with a small role in André Hunebelle's Les Collégiennes (1957) with her younger sister Sylvie Dorléac who, like their older half-sister Danielle, was an occasional child actress. She subsequently appeared in several films for director Roger Vadim as well as in L'Homme à femmes (1960), which caught the eye of Jacques Demy, who cast Deneuve in his 1964 musical Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, the film that brought her to stardom. Deneuve played the cold but erotic persona, for which she would be nicknamed the "ice maiden", in Roman Polanski's horror classic Repulsion (1965), reinforcing it in Luis Buñuel's Belle de Jour (1967), and reaching a peak in Tristana (1970).Her work for Buñuel would be her most famous .
Further prominent films from this early time in her career included Jean-Paul Rappeneau's A Matter of Resistance (1966), Demy's musical Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967) and François Truffaut's romantic thriller Mississippi Mermaid (1969). Deneuve remained active in European films during the 1960s and 1970s, though she limited her appearances in American films of the period to The April Fools (1969), a romantic comedy with Jack Lemmon, and Hustle (1975), a crime drama with Burt Reynolds. Her starring roles at the time were featured in such films as A Slightly Pregnant Man (1973) with Marcello Mastroianni and Le Sauvage (1975) with Yves Montand.
In the 1980s, Deneuve's films included François Truffaut's Le Dernier métro (1980), for which she won the César Award for Best Actress, and Tony Scott's The Hunger (1983) as a bisexual vampire, co-starring with David Bowie and Susan Sarandon, a role which brought her a significant lesbian and cult following, mostly among the gothic subculture. She made her debut film as a producer in 1988, Drôle d'endroit pour une rencontre, alongside frequent co-star Gerard Depardieu.
In the early 1990s, Deneuve's more significant roles included 1992's Indochine opposite Vincent Perez, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and won a second César Award for Best Actress; and André Téchiné's two movies, Ma saison préférée (1993) and Les Voleurs (1996). In 1997, Deneuve was the protagonist in the music video for the song N'Oubliez Jamais sung by Joe Cocker. In 1998 she won acclaim and the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival for her performance in Place Vendôme. In the late 1990s, Deneuve continued to appear in a large number of films such as 1999's five films Est-Ouest, Le temps retrouvé, Pola X, Belle maman, and Le Vent de la nuit.
In 2000, Deneuve's part in Lars von Trier's musical drama Dancer in the Dark alongside Icelandic singer Björk was subject to considerable critical scrutiny. The film was selected for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. She made another foray into Hollywood the following year, starring in The Musketeer (2001) for Peter Hyams. In 2002, she shared the Silver Bear Award for Best Ensemble Cast at the Berlin International Film Festival for her performance in 8 Women. In 2005, Deneuve published her diary A l'ombre de moi-meme ("In My Own Shadow", published in English as Close Up and Personal: The Private Diaries of Catherine Deneuve); in it she writes about her experiences shooting the films Indochine and Dancer in the Dark. She also provided the voice role of Marjane Satrapi's mother in Satrapi's animated autobiographical film Persepolis (2007), based on the graphic novel of the same name. In 2008, she appeared in her 100th film, Un conte de Noël.
Deneuve's recent work includes Potiche (2010) with frequent co-star Depardieu, Beloved (2011), alongside former co-stars Ludivine Sagnier and Chiara Mastroianni, the popular French adventure comedy Asterix and Obelix: God Save Britannia (2012) with Gerard Depardieu and Valérie Lemercier, screenwriter and director Emmanuelle Bercot's On My Way (2013), Palme D'or winning writer/director Pierre Salvadori's comedy drama In the Courtyard (2014), and André Téchiné's drama In the Name of My Daughter (2014). In 2017, she co-starred alongside Catherine Frot, in writer/director Martin Provost's French drama The Midwife, which has been acquired by Music Box Films for a summer 2017 distribution in the United States.
Deneuve appeared nude in two Playboy pictorials in 1963 and 1965. Her image was used to represent Marianne, the national symbol of France, from 1985 to 1989.[citation needed] As the face of Chanel No. 5 in the late 1970s, she caused sales of the perfume to soar in the United States – so much so that the American press, captivated by her charm, nominated her as the world's most elegant woman. In 1983, American Home Products retained her to represent their cosmetics line and hired world-renowned photographer Richard Avedon to promote its line of Youth Garde cosmetics, for which she famously proclaimed, "Look closely. Next year I will be 40."
She is considered the muse of designer Yves Saint Laurent; he dressed her in the films, Belle de Jour, La Chamade, La sirène du Mississipi, Un flic, Liza and The Hunger. In 1992, she became a model for his skincare line. In 2001, she was chosen as the new face of L'Oréal Paris. In 2006, Deneuve became the third inspiration for the M•A•C Beauty Icon series and collaborated on the colour collection that became available at M•A•C locations worldwide in February that year. Deneuve began appearing in the new Louis Vuitton luggage advertisements in 2007. Deneuve was listed as one of the fifty best-dressed over 50s by the Guardian in March 2013. In July 2017, Deneuve appeared in a video campaign for Louis Vuitton entitled Connected Journeys, celebrating the launch of the brand's Tambour Horizon smartwatch, which also featured celebrities, including Jennifer Connelly, Bae Doona, Jaden Smith and Miranda Kerr.
In 1986, Deneuve introduced her own perfume, Deneuve. She is also a designer of glasses, shoes, jewelry and greeting cards
Deneuve speaks fluent French, Italian and English and has some knowledge of Spanish, though she does not speak the language fluently. Her hobbies and passions include gardening, drawing, photography, reading, music, cinema, fashion, antiques and decoration.
Deneuve has been married once, to photographer David Bailey from 1965 to 1972. She has lived with director Roger Vadim, actor Marcello Mastroianni, cinematographer Hugh Johnson, Spanish model and current television presenter Carlos Lozano, and Canal+ tycoon Pierre Lescure.
Deneuve has two children: actor Christian Vadim, from her relationship with Roger Vadim, and actress Chiara Mastroianni, from her relationship with Marcello Mastroianni. She has five grandchildren.
Deneuve is close friends with the artist Nall and owns some of his works.
On 6 November 2019, BBC News reported that Deneuve suffered a mild stroke and was recuperating in a Paris hospital. Despite the health scare, there was no damage to her motor functions. Five weeks later, she was released from the hospital and spent the remainder of 2019 recuperating at her Paris home.

Longest Night (32)- Listening
I’m so sorry for this chapter being late.
We switched to a new system at work, and I’m a sort of Adobe Creative Cloud expert in the office, so I had to learn the new system, and then prepare to teach it to everyone else, who were in the same meetings that I was in, but didn’t understand. This has made for several weeks of 10-12 hour long days. Gettin’ that bread tho!!
I had a chapter mostly finished, then I realized I was skipping a bunch of stuff, so I had to take time to really hash out the order of the next half of the story. Hopefully, my vague ideas won’t change too much. lol
I started a new blog, dedicated to sharing works that have been harassed on Ao3 by a certain anon. If you or a friend have received repeated, unwanted harassment by a certain troll, please feel free to reach out to me @lilaanonsupportgroup. The goal is to create a safe place to share fics and drown out unwanted comments.
Thank you all for your patience!

Pierre Rouso was not a praying man. He was a criminal, with a charge list the length of his arm. But he was completely and utterly done as of tonight. The bald camera man sat in his holding cell, crying his eyes and guilt out, praying for forgiveness. He had participated with the police chief, just as he promised, and led everyone down to the Bunker in the Catacombs. He handed over passwords, combinations to locks, found every key he knew of, and did everything he could to make up for the injustice of his actions.
Seven prisoners were recovered from the bunker, all huddled into ambulances and taken to hospitals. Families were contacted, and missing person cases were closed.
All in the span of one night.
It was terrifying, and Pierre knew he was traumatized.
He awaited his fate in the holding cell at the precinct, though it was more of a formality than anything. The police chief had assured him that his cooperation was greatly appreciated and would reflect well on him when trial came.
He got his one phone call, and instead of calling his parents or friends, anyone that he knew would listen to him, he decided to call his kid sister.
He got her voicemail. “Elise? It’s Pierre. I know you…you’re disappointed with me. I really let you down. I’m supposed to be an example to you, but so far, I’ve only been an example of what not to do.” He swallowed. “I just wanted to let you know, I’m sorry. I’ve really messed up, and I got tied up with the wrong crowd, trying to get my life turned around. Sort of…an Ursula from the Little Mermaid situation. I made things worse, and…well, I might be going back to prison. You’ll probably hear about it on the news.” He choked, the truth getting caught in his throat. But he vomited it out anyway. “I was…involved in the Ladybug and Chat Noir incident. I didn’t want to be, but Salo said if I didn’t—she would—she knew mom and dad’s address. Knew yours too. I felt so helpless. I just needed to confess to you. You probably won’t believe me. You…probably think I’m a failure as a brother. I sure feel like one. But, ever since that night you cut me off, I vowed to turn things around. I wanted you to be proud of me. Because I love you, and I’m so so proud of you. You’re a great kid, and the best sister a guy could ask for. I don’t ask for forgiveness. Just…understanding. I’m…I’m at the police precinct right now. This is my one phone call. Maybe I should have called Ma,” he chuckled. “But I couldn’t stop myself. I was just through hell. I don’t know if you saw the news. I was the person behind the camera. I don’t know why Ladybug spared me, but I didn’t want to waste another moment. I had to tell you. You hear me, Elise? Don’t waste anytime either. If there’s anything you want to do, do it.” He let out a shuttering breath. “Maybe, if you’re feeling generous, could you let ma and pa know? I know that’s asking a lot. I’m sorry to burden you.”
The phone beeped, a warning that he was running out of time.
“But I love you. I will never stop loving you. Even if you never talk to me again. That’s fine. Go out there and be amazing. Um…I’m going to hang up now. Bye.”
It was an awkward way to end the message, but he had to. Or else he’d go into more rambling apologies and ‘I love you’s. Not necessarily a bad thing, but he didn’t want to overwhelm her.
That was several hours ago, after he had returned from his tour of the bunker. Then he was allowed to wash up, cleaning the blood from his face and arms. His clothes were stained, but there was nothing to do about it.
He waited then. Officers letting brief updates float around the room. Edward Savauge had been murdered, his body hoisted from the Arc de Triomphe like a trophy. Lady Lacrima and Grimalkin faced off against the auxiliary heroes and Hawkmoth.
Several more hours passed before a group of three banged up kids were brought into his holding cell with him.
“What happened to you boys?” Pierre asked, noticing the way they trembled.
“There’s two akuma on the loose.” Said one of the boys. “It was just supposed to…we just wanted the money in the cash register. Easy, right? But I had no idea that he was there.”
“Who?”
“Chat Noir. Or…who used to be Chat Noir. Sent one of us to the hospital.”
Pierre grunted. “You’re lucky that’s all he did.”
“Whaddya mean?”
“I mean…I saw what those two are capable of. They killed a room full of people without breaking a sweat. This blood? It’s not mine. You should thank your lucky stars.”
Then, a rush of red Ladybugs filtered passed the cell, lifting the blood from his clothes, and easing the soreness in the boys.
Pierre sighed as a cheer went up through the Precinct. “It’s over. It’s finally over.”
Nadja was exhausted, if not completely traumatized. She had been the one to volunteer to follow the Ladybug and Chat Noir story. So she had been on high alert with the van at any moment, ready to get a shot of the akumas in person.
But Lady Lacrima’s demonstration at the Arc de Triomphe was beyond horrible. It was scary, vial, and evil. Everything that Ladybug wasn’t. Later, she would find out that the cameras had turned away from the bodies as soon as they were revealed. They only captured Lady Lacrima’s speech, and the wails of the crowd surrounding them.
But it was over now.
The Miraculous Cure had run it’s course through Paris, correcting everything since they were first akumatized. It even fixed the damage caused by the wrecking ball akuma that started this whole mess.
She had even seen Marinette and Adrien loaded in the stretchers with her own eyes.
The hospital was silent. No one was allowed any information without clearance. So Nadja went home, finally. She’d monitor her phone and the Ladyblog. Someone would say something eventually, right?
Chloe had been helpful for once. She arrived at the hospital waiting room with her butler loaded up like a pack-mule.
“Alya, Nino, your backpacks.” She announced, holding out the bags.
“Thanks Chloe, you’re a real lifesaver!” Alya said honestly, noting her laptop was safely tucked inside.
“I know. Mrs. Cheng, I brought your purse with your phone chargers.”
“Thank you dear.”
“And Mr. Agreste,” she said with some level of coldness. “I brought the project that was in your office. Sorry if it’s wrinkled.”
“That’s fine Chloe. I can iron it.” He said, coming to take the hefty bag from the butler.
“That will be all, Jean-Pierre.”
“Yes, Miss Bourgeois.” He bowed before leaving the room. He technically wasn’t cleared to be in the room anyways.
Chloe plopped into a chair by Alya and Nino. “Any word?”
“Not any more than what I texted you.” Alya sighed. “Adrien’s still in surgery.”
“And Marinette?”
“She’s in recovery.” Stated Sabine. “We’re not allowed to see her yet.”
Chloe ‘hmph’ed, crossing her arms. “I suppose I’ll just have to be patient then.”
“You? Patient?” teased Alya.
“I’ve been known to be patient! On occasion!”
“Sure Chloe, I believe you.” Nino said in a slightly sarcastic tone.
Chloe knew they meant none of it. She was happy she had become something akin to friends with them since this started. Not close friendship, but…she could tolerate a few meals together, and what they had affectionately called ‘sleepovers’ which were just watching the stream and strategizing. When this was all over, and Adrien and Marinette were back to their old selves again, she might even be persuaded to hang out with all of them, as a group.
Her, Alya, and Marinette could get mani-pedis. Heck, Adrien would probably be game for that too.
Yes, when this was all over, and everything went back to normal, they’d all have a lot of fun together. It would be great!
Pollen left her purse and settled on the chair with the other kwamis. Wayzz and Trixx were playing a card game, and Pollen joined.
But Tikki and Plagg were much too solemn to do anything.
“I should be with him.” Plagg stated, agitated, for the 100th time.
“You heard the doctor.” Tikki scolded softly. “Adrien’s immune system is down. Any germs could be detrimental to him.”
“I don’t have germs.” Plagg hissed.
“Oh yeah? So that wasn’t you who contracted fleas in the 12th century and spread a plague that wiped out a 1/3 of Europe in 6 years? That was another ‘Plagg’ of whom the name was attributed?”
Plagg hissed at her and curled in on himself. “I didn’t ask you.”
“Plagg, I know you love Adrien, but you have to let the doctors work.”
“I am!” He argued. “There’s not a lock in this world that can stop me from being with him, and I want to be there so so badly! But I know modern medicine is better than what I can do for him…”
Sabine listened to the quiet sobbing of the cat for a moment, before deciding she couldn’t take it anymore. Delicately, she scooped him up in her hand, and then delicately started to pet him.
“Not scared you’ll get the plague?” He snarked.
“Not a bit,” she returned, scratching between his ears.
Just like Adrien would do.
He nestled into her hands, and tried to sleep, knowing that time would pass quicker that way.
Nino’s attention was directed over to Mr. Agreste. No one had paid him much attention since Plagg chewed him out. But he looked like he was getting down to work with something.
He had a wooden ring with some light pink fabric stretched across it. In the basket next to him, he had a spool of rose gold thread that he was threading through the palette.
“Mr. Agreste…are you doing needlepoint?”
“Yes,” he said, undeterred. “I’m working on a present for Marinette.”
That was surprising.
“I didn’t know you could embroider.” Noted Alya. “Marinette gushed about your work all the time. I don’t think she knew either.”
“Well, you didn’t know I was Hawkmoth. I guess I’m just full of surprises.”
The weird tension in the room was destroyed as Tom busted out laughing, nearly falling out of his chair. “I-I’m sorry!” He managed out, still chuckling. “I was just not expecting that from you!”
“Like I said,” Gabriel spoke, eyes not even leaving his project. “Full of surprises.”
“Can I see what you’re doing?” Asked Alya.
“I’m afraid not. This is a surprise after all. I want her to be the first one to see it.”
“I’m sure she’ll love it.” Said Sabine, genuine.
Alya took her laptop out of her bag, resting it on the table in the corner. “Alright, I suppose it’s time I start my project as well.”
“What project, babe?” Asked Nino.
“I’m going to update the Ladyblog with news from the last few days. Nadja asked me to share what I can. Apparently, the world has gone stir crazy for news. I’ve even been contacted by the Associated Press.”
“That’s awesome!” Sabine cheered. “To be contacted by an international news group!”
Alya smiled softly.  “You know, when I first started the blog, I dreamed of being Ladybug’s best friend. I imagined following her and Chat and helping them so much that I got to be her friend. When I got to be Rena, it was the dream come true. She had asked me to join! And then…I found out she was Marinette. I laid awake one night just remembering all the crazy things I said about Ladybug to her face. The wild fan theories, demanding that she get with Chat Noir, the evidence I had for her identity. So many times, Marinette said ‘are you sure you should post that?’ and I completely ignored her. How was that being a friend?”
Nino sighed, “babe, you gotta stop beating yourself up. You didn’t know she was Ladybug. No one did. She didn’t expect you to act any different.”
Alya understood where he was coming from, and what he was trying to tell her, but it didn’t dissuade her doubts. “I’m going to draft a post. Then I’ll let you guys read it and tell me what you think.”
“Sounds reasonable,” stated Gabriel.
Alya got to work, clacking out a message.
Sabine dug around in her purse for her phone charger, but found two items that had been placed on top. “Oh!” She said as she pulled out the handmade dolls.
“They were on Adrien’s bed.” Chloe explained. “I thought they might want them.”
“I’m sure that’ll make being separated for a little while easier on them.”
Plagg rose, not able to sleep with conversation in the room. His stomach rumbled, and he cursed it. “I’m hungry,” he stated.
Gabriel put his project to the side. “What do you eat?”
Plagg cast him a skeptical glance.
“I have the ring right now, so it’s my responsibility to feed you. Come on, let’s go down to the food court.”
Begrudgingly, Plagg followed, somehow feeling like there was more to this than appeared.
They were silent as they went down to the food court, following the same format he had taken with Nino. Though Nino had be easier to talk to, as he had been more willing to give him a second chance. This kwami wasn’t giving him an inch.
“Do you think it’s smart to be floating out here in the open?” Gabriel reprimanded.
“Bite me.”
“I’m just trying to—“
“Do nothing. I’m capable of finding food on my own. But I assume you had a reason to escort me. So I’ll let you tag along. But don’t talk to me until I eat. And don’t tell me what to do.”
Gabriel blinked at the ancient being. “Yes sir.”
It was the middle of the night, and all the kiosks were closed. But there were still vending machines. Plagg flitted between them, and found what he was looking for. “I want A3.”
“Popcorn?”
“An adequate substitute for my cheese.”
“What happened to being able to fend for yourself?” He asked as he took out his wallet.
“I can. But I know Adrien hates it when I take food without asking or paying.”
“Ah, I see.”
The cafeteria was devoid of people, which made things silent, save for the hum of the microwave and popping kernels.
Gabriel took a seat at a table by a window. The courtyard was alight with little lights illuminating sculptures and plants. A very peaceful, healing environment. A lovely garden that Marinette and Adrien might enjoy later.
A bag of popcorn flopped on the table. Plagg dove in, rustling the bag, and munching on his snack.
A few minutes passed before he came back out. “Okay. I’ve digested your apology and your reasoning. While I am still extremely angry for hurting Adrien, I am willing to listen to what you have to say.”
“I’m grateful.”
“I’ve concluded, that in the history of mankind, what you’ve done is evil and cruel. But not the worst I’ve seen. I’ve had wielders more evil than you.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah, I had a guy who ate his own baby.” He shuddered. “I had forgotten about that.”
Gabriel blinked. “That’s awful!”
“Well, it was part of the culture back then. Anyways, now you know the bar is really low.”
“Good to know, I suppose…”
Plagg ate some more popcorn before Gabriel finally cleared his throat.
“First, I’d like to thank you for taking care of Adrien these last few years.”
Plagg scoffed. “It wouldn’t have been a problem if you had just done your job.”
“That’s what I mean.” Gabriel insisted. “I wasn’t in the right place to be a father. Even if I put the effort in to be with Adrien, I wouldn’t have been kind or affectionate to him.” Gabriel fisted his hands, looking Plagg in his ancient eyes. “I hated him.”
Plagg stared, wide eyed. “What? How could you say that?”
“I need to be honest with you. For Adrien’s sake.”
Plagg watched him, considering, but stayed silent.
“He looks just like Emilie. He takes after her more than he does me. After she was gone, it became more evident. His smile, his eyes, his laugh, it was like…looking a painful reminder that she was gone. And of course, he didn’t know that she could be saved. He just grieved, and he still mourned, but I watched him grow. He made friends, hung out with their families…And I couldn’t stand it. Why wasn’t he in misery like me? Why was he so optimistic? So hopeful? I thought all sorts of horrible things about him. Assuming he was forgetting her. I’m sure that was the depression telling me that.
“The butterfly miraculous gives me heightened empathy. I knew exactly what everyone around me was feeling. So even when he was schooled into professionalism, I could tell what he was feeling inside. And…it felt better to me to make him sad.”
“You know, some people might categorize that into sociopathy.”
“That would make sense. Am I awful then? A terrible father?” Plagg crunched on mouthful of popcorn as he considered it. “Yes, you are a terrible father. I wish you could have found this out about yourself earlier in life before you had Adrien. Do you think you were always like this? Tell me about your childhood.”
Gabriel ran his fingers through his hair. “When did this turn into a therapy session?”
“When I decided I needed to further analyze you before letting you near Adrien again. Now, go on.”
“Well…I suppose to some degree, I’ve always gained some satisfaction from people’s suffering. It…really culminated when my little brother died when we were kids. My parents were inconsolable, but I was just angry because they stopped paying attention to me. They never got over it.”
“You were never sad that your brother died?”
“I was, a little. I think I might have cried. But, not like my mother did.”
“Did you have a lot of friends?”
He screwed up his lips. “I think there were a lot of kids who liked me and thought I was their friend. But I didn’t really care to stay in contact with them as I got older.”
“Ever feel lonely?”
“Only after Emilie left.” He admitted. “She was the only one I felt like I was equal with. That’s why I was so desperate to get her back.”
“Ever have trouble with the law before Hawkmoth?”
Gabriel got quiet again. “People had trouble with the law because of me.”
Plagg narrowed his eyes. “I know you think you’re better than others. You’re cold, and you shirk familial obligations. You manipulate and threaten people to get them to do what you want. You justify your destructive behavior, no matter how hurtful it is to yourself or others. Does that sound right?”
Gabriel didn’t answer.
“But wait!” Said Nooroo, flying out of Gabriel’s jacket. “He’s been a lot better lately.”
Plagg blinked at the newcomer. “I forgot you were in there.”
“I was sleeping.”
“What do you mean he’s been better?”
“He was really accommodating to Marinette’s parents, and Alya and Nino! He’s thought about their safety and he’s been really nice to them!”
“Is it because it’s the right thing, or the smart thing?” Asked Plagg.
Gabriel winced. “It’s…what Adrien would have wanted.”
“Ah, I think I see a solution here.” Plagg finished the last few kernels. “You may be around Adrien, but you have to judge your behavior on what you think he would like. Which would be painful, considering you hate him.”
“I don’t hate him.” Gabriel clarified. “I did, at one point. But, as soon as his mask dissolved on the screen—“ Gabriel trembled violently, as if the memory had grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him. “It was like I had been punched in the heart. Everything just—hit me. Like…everything I had done had caused this. Every missed dinner, every short comment…”
“Guilt?”
“It felt like I was awake for the first time in my life. Like I was omniscient to all the things I had done. Keenly aware of every piece I had played. And that my actions weren’t as self contained as I thought. I can’t explain it.”
“You became aware that Adrien was a person.” Plagg stated. “A person just like you.”
Gabriel covered his mouth. His eyes wide with horror at the thought.
“You’ve got work to do, Gabriel. I’m not the one who’s going to fix you. You have to do it yourself, for Adrien’s sake.”
The man just nodded his head. He looked nauseous.
“What did you want to tell me? You brought me out here, after all.”
Gabriel couldn’t speak. Couldn’t breathe.
Plagg was right. Absolutely right. Adrien hadn’t been a son to him. He was a trophy, a pawn.
A toy.
And the realization of that evil was crippling.
But Plagg just sat at the table licking the salt and butter off the bag as the man had a complete meltdown in front of him.
“Don’t you think that was a little harsh?” Asked Nooroo.
“What? No. Why don’t you ask him what you were to him? See if he can lie and call you a friend.”
But Gabriel already had his hands around Nooroo, holding him gently. “I’m sorry…I’m sorry…”
“You’re getting better.” Nooroo assured, petting his cheek. “I forgive you.”
It was still many minutes before Gabriel could speak. He patted his face with his handkerchief. “I’m sorry, I just…”
“Please don’t apologize for feeling emotion.” Plagg groaned. “I have to tell Adrien that all the time. Probably a trait he got from you.”
“Undoubtably.” Gabriel whispered. He swallowed hard, and took out his phone. “This is something I wanted to show you. I have to show you. It happened while you were dormant. I get no pleasure from showing you this, understand?”
Plagg was skeptical, but allowed him to turn the screen to him.
The footage was in green, showing a sickly and terrified Adrien. Plagg recoiled at the sight.
Then Gabriel pressed play.
“Plagg! Plagg!” Adrien screamed as he beat on the door. “Plagg!”
Gabriel fast forward, only for the scene to stay the same. Same scream, same pounding on the door, same begging, pleading.
“Plagg!”
Fast forward more.
“Plagg!”
The timestamp went up by minutes, and then hours.
“Plagg!”
On and on, never stopping.
“Plagg!”
Until his voice gave out.
Plagg just stared, eyes brimming with tears. “Why would you show me that? Why the hell would you show me that!?”
“I don’t know what his reaction will be to seeing you. But if it’s negative, I want you to know why. We’ll explain it to him. But you have to know…”
“You’re a sick and twisted man, Gabriel Agreste. I don’t envy you.”
And he floated off without another word.
Oh.
He was very tired.
Very tired and very in pain.
There was pressure on his chest, and strange voices all around.
He cracked open his eyes. A bright light.
Cold. Metal. Under his fingertips.
Paralyzed. He couldn’t move. But, maybe, if he could tilt his head forward just enough.
Oh.
That was a lot of blood.
A lot of blood.
His blood?
Yes. Quite.
And…bones. And tools. Sticking out of his chest. Whoa-oh.
“Oh shit. He’s awake. Dr. Boucher?”
His eyes shot to the speaker. A woman with red hair and reflective sunglasses.
Salo.
“Adrien? Adrien can you hear me?”
His eyes flicked to the other voice. Another Salo. And another next to her! A whole room of them!
“Adrien, you’re in surgery. Just relax.”
What were they doing!?
What was going on!?
Why was it so hard to breathe!?
“You’re going through anesthesia awareness. We’re going to get you back to sleep, okay?”
He couldn’t trust anything this woman-these women were saying.
Why did that one sound like a man?
Was that blood?!
But before he could panic anymore, a haze took him and he fell back to sleep.
