#the fiend #beware my brethren #horror film #british cinema #1972 #robert hartford davis #brian comport #tony beckley #ann todd #patrick magee #madeleine hinde #suzanna leigh #david lodge #percy herbert #ronald allen #maxine barrie #jeannette wild #diana chappell #susanna east #hani borelle #bill mitchell #i caught a tv showing of this (a cut version) as a teen but it's been frustratingly hard to find in the uk p much since release so I'm #grateful to 88 films for cleaning it up and giving it a fancy blu ray release. a curio from the brit horror pantheon‚ its stronger emphasis #on sex‚ violence and sexually motivated violence mark it as a harder‚ nastier version of the form; a stepping stone between the same #director's own Corruption in the late 60s and the indie work of Pete Walker and Norm Warren later in the 70s. in amongst the sadism and the #misogyny are some truly interesting ideas‚ as Tony Beckley's personal manias and psychoses are contrasted with the fanaticism of the xtian #religious order he's grudgingly affiliated with. plays on some subtle homoerotic themes and there's a hefty dose of anti police sentiment #but the real coup was casting Beckley and Beckett muse Pat Magee; both are magnetic‚ in very different performances #also of note is the improbably boppy christian rock gospel soundtrack (best used in horribly ironic fashion as Beckley stalks and kills) #the final image of the film is both quite spectacular and instantly explains why the film fell foul of the censors on original release

This was made for 1 million dollars. The Flash cost 200 million. Why can this movie pull off having two of the same actor in one shot but The Flash can't without turning one of them into a bizarre uncanny valley deep fake.

My comments on the Extended Generational Sorting Algorithm:

Gosh there are some murky in-betweens here.

G-1 – JSA and teams like the All-Star Squadron and the Blackhawks. The WWII edition. This is occasionally merged with G0 as timelines shift, but includes Hippolyta, Ted Knight, Sandra Knight (as Phantom Lady), Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, etc. A lot of this cohort have aging issues and several have grandkids in G1 or G1.5. Zinda simultaneously belongs to this group and G1.5.

G0 – JSA, the gap between WWII and the first JLA. This is the younger JSA cohort who aren’t so tied to WWII and the gap after. Dinah Drake. Ted Grant. Johnny Quick. Giovanni Zatara. Walter Chase (the Acro-Bat). Bruce’s parents. The Kents. Jim Gordon. Etc.

G1 – JLA land! Bruce, Clark, Diana, Ollie, Barry, Hal, Arthur, etc. You know them. Your idea of a headlining JLA includes these folk.

G1.5 – Birds of Prey and JLI zone. Characters too old to be Titans cohort but younger/clearly different than the G1 headliners. Barbara Gordon and Dinah Lance are the stalwarts of this group, plus I’ll add Helena Bertinelli, Cameron Chase, Kate Spencer, Kendra, etc. I guess I’d probably put Harley Quinn, agewise, here too. Also would add Beatriz, Tora, Booster, Ted Kord, etc. Guy and Zatanna sort of bounce between here and G1 depending on storyline.

G2 – it’s the Titans! Dick, Donna, Wally, Roy, Garth, Victor, Gar, Kory, Raven etc. Their agebounds are probably Roy as the oldest and Gar as the youngest, though Gar’s given to them as a courtesy – he’s realistically a member of G2.5, he just hangs with G2. We also add Kyle and Connor and Jesse Quick etc to this cohort despite them not being core Titans given their strong connections to particularly Donna and Wally.

G2.5 – The JL Taskforce kids and Jason’s non-existent team. Ray Palmer’s Teen Titans. This is a group of individuals that has never properly coalesced. Overlaps in age with both the bottom of G2 and the top of G3 but distinctly don’t belong to either. Jason, Ray, Grant, Argent, Cynthia, Eddie, Snapper Carr, plus Danny Chase and arguably Gar all fall into this group. Rose Wilson overlaps with G3 but vibeswise probably also belongs to this group. I am tossing up whether Anissa and Jennifer Pierce belong here or in G2.

G3 – Young Justice. Tim, Kon, Cassie, Bart, Cissie, Greta, Anita. Cass Cain belongs here despite being the same age as several G2.5s. Steph, Charlie, Black Alice, Jaime, Zachary Zatara, even a handful of the newer folk like Jinny Hex slot in here. Several Supergirls including current Kara, Courtney Whitmore IS a member of this group and the three oldest Marvel kids (Billy, Mary and Freddy) are currently aged into this.

G4 – Damian’s Teen Titans. Damian, Jon Kent (yes even still with the age up), Emiko Queen, Ace West etc. If they are still a teen right now in DC storytelling or SHOULD be a teen, they belong here (if they’re a teen and SHOULDN’T be they’re probably a G3/G5). The Gotham Academy kids. Arguably the Titan Academy kids too? Agewise the DEO Titans kids but spiritually probably not (also the chances of us ever seeing them again is…low) The younger Marvel kids (Eugene, Pedro and Darla especially) are with this group.

G5 – so this group are either alternate G3 or G3.5s. Too new and too un-networked with G3 to be absorbed. Jace Fox, Yara Flor, Jackson Hyde, Duke Thomas and the We Are Robin cohort all belong here. Kong Kenan, Avery Ho, etc also are members.

G6 – Titans Offspring Gen. Almost everyone in this group has been artificially aged, which is a thing, hey. Lian, Irey, Jai, Cerdian, Robbie. Maxine, obviously. Otho and Osul-Ra.

G7 – Help I’m From Earth-One: Power Girl and Helena Wayne.

G8 – The Lost Children – also Help I’m From Earth-One in a lot of respects but they’re in their teens, not adults. May get folded into other groups if they get more use.

Seeing Suzy had been a surprise. Barry was infamous for his piss poor memory, but somehow her pretty eyes and red hair had waded through the spiderwebs of his brain. A slow blink and then a smile before he approached her. He would have understood if she didn't recognize him (height, tattoos, and accent aside), but he didn't think she would look at him like he was carrying a loaded gun. (He was, but she didn't know that.)

He had a daughter. Her name was Maxine.

Barry was under the impression that it was Suzy's responsibility (Susan now, Susan Hargrove) to explain to their daughter why she had hidden her existence from him. But just getting her to confess had already caused the woman to burst into hysterical crying and he didn't want to stay around after that.

Maxine had his fucking eyes. It was almost like looking at himself in the mirror. (If he was a foot and a half shorter and had red hair and was a completely different person.) "Uhhh," he managed to eloquently say. "I'm Barry." He blinked at her. Should he just say it? Suddenly full of nerves, he removed his ball cap to scratch at his scalp. "I just ran into your mom, and I guess I'm your dad? Surprise!"

Been thinking about Maxine and I like her a lot. She really fits in with the Flash family. She's got red hair, she's full of sarcasm, she could end the world if she wanted to, she has a repeat name, she has a funky lil superhero suit, ect. She really fits in with Wally's kids.

Anyway I like her and I hope she shows up more often in the Flash. She is Irey's best friend and I think that's fantastic. One is the Avatar for the Red and one is an Avatar of the Speedforce. These two prepubescent little girls could both solo Superman and win.

Irish Film, TV Nominations 2023: ‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ ‘Bad Sisters’ Lead With Most Nods

“The Banshees of Inisherin,” starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, led the nominations for the Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs) as the full list of nominees was unveiled on Monday night local time, picking up 11 nods in the film category.

“Bad Sisters” – Sharon Horgan’s Apple TV+ mystery series – led the pack in the drama category with 12 noms.

Coming off the back of a stellar year for Irish film and television, the nominations include a number of familiar names and titles, including Paul Mescal, who has been nominated for best lead actor in a film for “Aftersun” and best supporting actor in a film for “God’s Creatures” while Farrell is also competing in both categories, both for his star turn in “Banshees” and his supporting role as Penguin in “The Batman.”

“Conversations with Friends” has also scored noms in multiple categories while Aoife McArdle is up for best drama director for Apple TV+ series “Severance.” Sinead O’Connor doc “Nothing Compares” is up for best feature documentary.

The IFTAs are set to take place at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre on May 7. They will be broadcast on local network RTÉ.
