Zuko can't keep his eyes off Sokka.

This is nothing new, of course. At this point in their years of marriage, preceded by years of friendship that turned into years of dating, Zuko is sure he has spent hours of his life staring at Sokka.

This, though...this is different.

He watched Sokka's brilliant smile all night as he played and talked with his niece and nephews for hours. He saw Sokka running around with them, playing tag and hide and go seek and half a dozen games the kids had invented until Sokka needed to rest his knee and found himself with a lap full of three young kids mere moments after sitting down. Zuko smiled fondly as Sokka read the three of them books until all four of them were on the verge of falling asleep. Zuko saw every hug and forehead kiss he gave the kids as they said their goodbyes, saw Sokka's eyes getting misty at their protest of his leaving, saw the content smile on his face as he drove.

Once they are home and getting ready for bed, Sokka catches him looking a few times until he grins and teases, "Is there something on my face?"

Zuko smiles. "No. I just...I love how much you love those kids. I love them too, of course, but you are crazy about them. It's cute."

"Yeah, well, I can't help it that they are so cute."

"They're getting so big," Zuko says. "Do you ever...miss when they were smaller?"

Sokka shrugs. "I thought I would, but I love seeing their personalities emerge as they grow. It's so funny seeing them act just like Aang or Katara."

"Don't you miss their newborn snuggles though?" Zuko asks.

Sokka eyes him suspiciously. "Obviously. I'm not a monster. Wait, did you-" he starts, eyes lighting up for a moment before he calms down. "Never mind. No way is Katara pregnant, she's told me she's done having kids." He still gives Zuko a side eye, and Zuko laughs.

"She's not pregnant, no. We were talking about something else all night."

"Okay," Sokka says, giving him his full attention, now definitely on Zuko's case. "It has to do with babies?"

Zuko nods, trying his hardest to not betray his nervousness. He's not nervous about what he's trying to ask Sokka, he knows he wants it, but he also knows how badly Sokka wants it, so Zuko wants this moment to be special. Sokka, looking confused, just waits for Zuko to elaborate, and Zuko swallows. "Well, I've been talking with Azula-"

"She is pregnant?" Sokka says, eyebrows shooting up, and Zuko can't help but laugh at the bewildered expression on his face.

"No, definitely not," he says quickly. "She just-- well, you see, she's been...she's a lawyer, yeah? And not the kind that we...but she has connections...she has some good recommendations..."

Sokka looks completely lost, so Zuko stops, takes a deep breath, and says, "She gave me a list of good family lawyers. Ones that have experience with adoption cases."

At first, he thinks Sokka hadn't heard him, he's more still than Zuko has ever seen him in his life. But then, his eyes widen, barely enough for Zuko to notice. Zuko doesn't think he's even breathing.

"This is something that we have talked about but we always dropped it, leaving it for some future discussion because we were busy or low on money or distracted by one thing or another. I know how badly you want kids, and I was nervous about it at first, but now I know how badly I want to have kids with you, and it's been all I can think about the last few times we have been at Katara's, and I swear she read my mind because she started talking about it tonight and everything just feels right, so if you are ready, if you think it's a good time-"

He doesn't get to finish his rambling. Sokka shoots across the room, his hands gently cradling Zuko's face as he looks into his husband's eyes. Sokka's own eyes are wide and excited and so damn beautiful, and he says, "You're serious?"

"More serious than I've ever been ab--hmmph!"

He's taken by surprise as Sokka interrupts him again, this time with a kiss so fierce it honestly kind of hurts. Zuko smiles into it nonetheless, his arms reaching for Sokka's waist to pull him closer.

Sokka's lips widen into a smile as well, and when they pull back, Zuko asks, "So is that a yes?"

"Of course it's a yes, you dumbass," Sokka says, going for exasperated but failing as his tears are overflowing and Zuko reaches a hand up to wipe them away, not registering his own tears until Sokka does the same for him.

So…about that Captured AU? 👀

Nothing quite says 'spring/summer 2020' like an intense and sudden atla relapse amiright.

Anyway. The Captured AU.

Immediately after the failed invasion, Sokka ends up separated from the group and gets captured. Since he's been ID'd as the idea guy behind the invasion plan, he gets sent to Boiling Rock prison and has, as the poet's say, A Bad Time since Azula wants answers about where the Avatar is. Unknown to Sokka, Zuko's defected and comes across Aang, who has doubled-back to see if he can track down where Sokka ended up. Zuko and Aang end up staging the jail break to save Sokka as Zuko's initial 'joining the Gaang' adventure. Guest stars Suki and Hakoda are also along for the ride, along with soon-to-be-defectors Mai and Ty Lee, with angst for everyone all around.

In the snip below, Azula just got done with questioning Sokka, with Hakoda there to put pressure on both of them, and Sokka's given a fake location for Aang et al, and as a "reward" they're given a couple of minutes alone.

Under a cut because it's a lil long:

Hakoda’s launching himself forward before the door is fully closed, falling to his knees in front of Sokka and reaching out for him. Sokka can’t help it. The reaction is out of his control--the pulling back, the curl in on himself, the small and afraid whine that works out of his throat. But Hakoda’s hands cup Sokka’s face gently, thumbs moving over Sokka’s cheeks. That hurts more, somehow, than the pain his body had braced for by someone moving so closely so quickly. Hakoda says, “Sokka--”

“It’s okay,” Sokka whispers. His voice shakes. “It’s okay. I didn’t--Aang’s--”

Hakoda shushes him, another swipe of his thumbs. Sokka leans into the touch. “They’ll be listening,” Hakoda says, voice wavering as much as Sokka’s. “But that’s good. You did a good thing.”

Hakoda’s crying and not trying to hide it. Sokka can’t talk around the sudden lump in his throat. Hakoda lets go of Sokka’s face to put one hand on Sokka’s arm, the other to the back of Sokka’s neck, pulling him into a loose hug, careful not to jostle any hurting places. Sokka drops his head to his dad’s shoulder and tries to get his breathing in order. 

“You’re doing so well,” says Hakoda. 

Which is wrong. Sokka isn’t doing well at all. He’s been left behind and caputred and messed everything up, just like he messed up the invasion. Just like he messes up everything. They’re both going to die here because Sokka wasn’t smart enough, fast enough, good enough, and he can’t talk around that knot in his throat, not even to apologize for messing all of this up so badly, all because he thought he could handle this when he can’t.

“I’m so proud,” Hakoda says, and Sokka wants to ask why.

im trying to finish outlining cots and telling yall my train of thought might help me finish this so here that is.

This is also the first time you guys are getting any idea of what is actually going on in this story so have fun.

It takes like 5 chapters (not including the prologue) for things to actually start going somewhere. I dont know if thats normal pacing or not but oh well.

The difference between Sokka and Katara in this half (ish) of the story is so funny because theyre both experiencing the opposite sides of the teenage experience. Kataras out here rebelling (against who??? not even she knows), and Sokkas going through the beginning stages of gifted child burnout but like on crack.

Azulas a lot more better off in this fic than in canon because her and Zuko get to have a lot better relationship. Theyre not extremely close, because there is still some tension but not nearly to the extreme as canon. They just have a normal sibling relationship or close to it. She gets to be the well rounded and overall stable one. She deserves it. Everyone else at one point or another is going to be pretty distraught. Azulas just watching the world burn. and we love her for that.

So far all four of Zuko, Azula, Sokka, and Katara have atleast one pov in each chapter. And the difference between these is so funny because you have Sokka, who is worried about everything and anything and is like the mom of the group trying to keep his children in line, Katara's out there doing the dumbest shit she can think of on impulse, Zuko's trying to fight 10 people at once at any given chapter and Azula's just... watching.

Direct quotes from some of the outlines of azulas povs include, "Azulas really confused at everyone", "Azula's scheming", "Azula's interrogating and also scheming", "Azula's being a girlboss" Pretty much Azulas just taking everything in and laughing at everyone elses problems.

I love Azula in this fic.

Zuko's getting himself into trouble. This boy really just needs to shut the fuck up and life will overall just be a whole lot easier for him.

Most of the oc's from this fic are the more minor ones from ihiap. So far I think they've only been mentioned once or twice. But there are also some new ones and one of the new ones should be pretty familiar because its like, if two of my other ihiap ocs had a baby and you change the font a tad bit, you get this dude.

This dude is going to be the one to save Zuko from getting himself murdered because he wont stop running his mouth. This guy is the type that usually really soft and kind and quiet but at one point he just has to go "it's not that zuko's a horrible person, he's just really fucking stupid" and everyone else in the situation just goes "Oh yeah that makes sense thanks for clearing that up"

Katara and Sokkas relationship kind of replaces Zuko and Azulas for the strained sibling relationship in this fic. This is because Sokka a few times has to do something that majorly goes against Kataras strong morals but he has to do it to save her but he doesnt tell her that and it creates a lot of tension.

Zuko getting himself captured by making dumb decisions while Kataras trying to be his braincell 🤝 Katara completely abandoning any and all responsibility, actively putting a target on her back, after Sokka had to mansplain manipulate manwhore his way into some semblance of control to keep her from being tortured and starved 🤝 Sokka making the most impulsive and not well thought out decisions possible while Azula is constantly covering him and fixing the mistakes hes making in order to keep Katara and Zuko from getting killed.

I think that Sokka and Azulas relationship is a lot more simular to canon Katara and Sokkas relationship than cots Sokka and Katara. Because like,, while canon Sokka and Kataras bond is the whole "we're siblings, we grew up with eachother, we've always been by eachothers side' thing going on, that got a little bit interupted in cots. Mean while Azula and Sokka both have this 'I have this overwhelming weight resting on my shoulders and it's caused me to have to do horrible things to protect either myself or my loved ones and my sibling doesn't underdstand the entirety of that' solidarity in one another that allows them to have a really close relationship.

This story has so much going on right now because all four of the characters that im trying to keep track of all have very different goals and drives and plots. And it's going to be a while before they start to overlap.

I really love writing Azula and Ursas relationship because canon gives you so little that you can interpret it in so many different ways. Like if you put a little bit of work in you can turn it into every single mother-daughter issues dynamic in the book.

Thats all for now I'll add onto this when I feel like mentioning something else.

(I really need to stop waiting so long to watch this...because...it's just not good for my ability to pay attention, not that there's a lot to comment on yet. They're just running from the Angels)

Fuck...the Angels are making Amy do the count down because its FUN for them. Goddamn.

I'd be acting so much more scared than Amy is in her position. She has to rely on everyone else to not blink while she's not allowed to open her eyes. She's been left by the Doctor again, and not even River can stay with her.

It's a beautiful shot, but it's also so sad...Amy, completely abandoned in the forest, not able to open her eyes, and the Angels trying to close in. Every time she tries to get someone to stay, they leave.

How did Eleven get the reputation of being the silly goofy Doctor?? The way he has scarily yelled in just about every episode so far…

The angels were scarier when we never saw them move.

I listened to Billie eilish’s new song “what was I made for?” recently, and it reminded me a lot of your interpretation of Sokka. Especially the lyric “looked so alive, turns out I’m not real, just something you paid for”

The song also repeats “I don’t know how to feel” a lot, which reminds me a lot of sokka repressing his emotions.

Also even the main question of the song “what was I made for?” is very Sokka to me. Like it’s basically Sokka not feeling like a whole, real person outside of his perceived purpose of being Katara’s protector and coming to the realization throughout the series that she doesn’t need him to physically protect her and therefore causing him to question his purpose.

Anyways, this was king of pointless but just thought I’d share
