💌Obligatory sex pollen fic I guess?? chapter 2💌

Summary: Certain abilities Dazai can dispel outright without touching the user. This has always confused the brunette greatly where the technical line was drawn. During Q's apocalypse, he couldn't bring individuals back to their senses but with Shiwabusa's fog he could prevent Chuuya’s ability from manifesting. Apparently this “Sex pollen” ability was more like the former example. Which left Dazai the only one conscious of their actions as everyone fucked like rabbits.

Notes: Based on a dream I had a few nights ago....This chapter is shorter because I started waking up once I realized it was THAT DREAM, I'm literally crying it got a second chapter some one help😭

Just like that for a few weeks everything was back to some semblance of normalcy. Out of sight out of mind you guess. Once you stopped feeling sick all the time you could hardly tell you were pregnant at all. You were still confined to the office since it would take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to fully heal from your injuries but that was fine with you. Honestly you don’t understand how Dazai does it. You've been pampered by Yosano's ability. It didn't even occur to you that you'd still have to have some sort of physical therapy afterwards either. Meanwhile Dazai gets shot and stabbed all the goddamn time and he takes it like a champ. Just one more reason to like him you guess.

Dazai looked up to catch you staring. You didn’t look away but your face did start to feel warm. You hadn’t really sat down and talked about it in depth yet. That night or about the child and honestly no one in the office has really tried to bring it up either. Although you still don't know what to say, sooner or later someone has to say something and hopefully it won't have to be you. Unfortunately you have a feeling it's going to be you.

Dazai glanced at the door and frowned. He's been trying to avoid any meaningful confrontation but judging from the sounds outside he swallowed. He knew those footsteps better than anyone and it was only a matter of time before “he” showed up. This might as well be happening today. Without warning Chuuya emerged from the doorway looking annoyed. 

“Okay, which one of you is the weretiger!”

Atsushi hesitantly raised his hand. You raised an eyebrow at the exchange. What was the mafia executive doing looking for Atsushi? Dazai sighed and rose to his feet, putting an arm around Atsushi as Chuuya approached the two. 

“Why Chuuya, what brings you out to our domain! I almost didn't see you there, have you gotten shorter?” He smiles cheerfully. You swear you could see flowers and sparkles surrounding him.

Chuuya crossed his arms “Go to hell and wait your turn. I have a bone to pick with you after I square away business with the tiger boy.” He glared at Atsushi, sizing him up. “And you, my boy Akutagawa hasn't been the same since your guy's little rescue operation. Mind telling me why that is?” It was surprisingly less threatening and more of a genuine question.

Atsushi’s face flushed a few shades darker “Why don't you ask him! He's the one who-” He stopped mid sentence, groaning. He figured Akutagawa wouldn't talk about it to anyone either but being asked directly because Akutagawa was out of sorts was insulting. How did he think Atsushi felt? “You know what, the bottom line is I'm pregnant and it's his fault he used his stupid ability like that. If anything I should be the one who's traumatized!” 

Chuuya hummed, putting his hand under his chin as he thought about an earlier encounter. “Oh so that's why he was muttering about being bound to the weretiger. He was saying something about not even holding hands yet and having to marry you. Guess that makes me the godfather for two babies then.” the redhead shrugged like this conversation was an everyday occurrence.

Atsushi slouched, was this karma for trying to suggest that Fyodor and Nikolai should get married? 

“Don’t tell me Akutagawa is religious too.”

Chuuya furrowed his eyebrows. “What? No listen kid, this is about stepping up to responsibilities. Raising a kid's a big deal.” He looked over at Dazai with a smirk about to add one more thing but Dazai interjected, flicking the brim of Chuuya's hat.

He continued to wave his hand in the other's face. “Who said you were the godfather? I don't remember calling you.” Both of their expressions went flat for a moment as they glared at each other passively.

“You should have, it would have been better to hear the news from you than from Mori.” He huffed “Why didn't you? It's not like you to go back on your word. What happened too, I wouldn't lie about something like this.” He mocked in a Dazai like fashion.

“I thought you were too drunk to remember that!” Dazai whined.

“Yeah well I also remember promising to be your best man if you ever lived long enough to find someone.” Chuuya leaned back into his hip “So?” the redhead crossed his arms, waiting.

“So what?” Dazai said matter of factly. As the two stared back at each other, Atsushi finally sat down. Why did they have to do this at his desk?

“So what? You're not even going to introduce me!”

Dazai rolled his eyes. Is that really what Chuuya came here for? When Chuuya walked in you had gotten up from your desk to make tea. As you brought the cups over Dazai walked around you and put his hand on your shoulder “(Y/N), Chuuya, Chuuya, (Y/N). There, you happy?”

“Wait (Y/N)? You mean your-” Dazai cut him off but Chuuya looked surprised. You wonder what he was going to say. It sounded important.

Dazai pankicked and grabbed the other from behind covering his mouth as he dragged him out into the hallway. “Nope that's it you overstayed your welcome.” 

Once the door shut Ranpo pouted “I'm pregnant too ya know. I wouldn't mind Mr. Fancy hat being the godfather.” He puffed out his cheeks.

Atsushi rolled his eyes. “That's all you got from that!”

Ranpo sighed “No, I also got the image of Akutagawa tying you up so thanks for that.” 

Atsushi stood up so fast his chair nearly fell over. “How can everybody speak about it so casually!” 

He looked over to you with pleading eyes. Atsushi was probably hoping you'd back him up. Instead you laughed, handing him the disregarded tea. 

“Well for starters only the adults are here today and the more you talk about it the less power it has.” You handed the detective another cup. “Although instead of putting you on the spot Ranpo should have asked if you wanted to talk about it first or at least opened up about his experience.”

He took a sip of tea before shrugging. Ranpo didn't mind sharing at all in fact he’s glad someone asked about it. “Not much to say really. Poe hugged me from behind and by the time I realized he wasn't doing it to be cute I just kinda went with it.” Ranpo shrugged with a smile on his face. “I'm more curious what happened with Kunikida!”

The blonde tensed as you set the last cup down in front of him. He had stopped his typing as a bead of sweat dripped down the side of his face. “Do I have too?” Out of everyone in the office Kunikida had been the one trying the hardest to skirt around the conversations. He wanted to forget it ever happened. It was bad enough that Dazai would tease him about it whenever they were alone.

Ranpo hummed “Akiko's really careful because she could never give up drinking for that long, so since you're not forced into being a dad, dealer's choice?” You all nodded in agreement, it only seemed fair since you were putting him on the spot.

Kunikida pushed up his glasses. You assume he probably doesn't want to share. Instead he turns to address you. “Which reminds me, I thought Yosano gave you a contraceptive too?”

“I was so exhausted I forgot it was in my pocket and never took it.” You frowned. It didn't feel like a priority in the moment but like most of them you were out of it. “But forced parenting aside, right now this is about sexual trauma.”

 Kunikida cleared his throat “I wouldn't know what to share. I turned to look at Yosano and the next thing I know we're kissing in a passionate manner.” He paused wondering if he should say something about the elephant in the room. “Also this should go without saying, but no one is forcing you to be a parent. Ranpo and Atsushi might not have a choice but there's still plenty of time for you to think it over. No one would stop you if you decided you're not ready to be a mother.” This was true but your mind was already made up. 

Somehow only Ranpo knew of your crush? You thought it was fairly obvious. Had it been anyone else you probably would have gotten rid of it by now. 

Ranpo laughed before you could answer, sharing his two cents. “Who said I don't have a choice? I'm choosing to have this little munchkin! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see what me and Poe create. Besides, I've always wanted a mini me!” He patted his stomach proudly.

Atsushi sipped on his tea “That's true. So in a weird way it kind of worked out for you and Poe huh. At least one of us lucked out.” He’s been avoiding Akutagawa as much as possible ever since that night.

Ranpo snickered, “I would say two of us lucked out.” He draped one around your shoulder opening his eyes to give you a smug look. “Well you care to share with the class? This was your idea after all.” 

So that’s why he bothered to bring all of this up. You sighed in defeat. “Lucked out my ass!” Your cheeks were red as Atsushi and Kunikida gave you incredulous looks “Keep in mind Dazai was fully conscious of his actions. He kind of just let me get it out of my system in hope that I would eventually snap out of it,” You groaned hiding your face in your hands “and yes, apparently I was begging him to fuck a baby into me. Is that what you wanted to hear, Ranpo!”

Ranpo blinked a few times “You didn't have to go that far but yeah I was just trying to get you to mention your crush on Dazai.”

“You have a crush on Dazai?!” Both Atsushi and Kunikida shouted. Kunikida nearly spat out his tea. You groaned “That’s why I was planning on keeping the child but I feel like I'd be baby trapping him.”

“It’s not baby trapping if you decide to keep the child, it's your body. I already told you that you have the final say.”

Everyone slowly turned their heads back to see Dazai coming back into the office. You swallowed “How much of that did you hear?”

“Not much but you already told me your reason for wanting to keep the kid.” He shrugged nonchalantly and everyone wiped their heads back to you.

Atsushi was dumbfounded. “Wait a second, let me get this straight. He knows that you-”

Dazai spoke over him. “-Always wanted kids, it's not that big of a deal. Unless that's not what we're talking about?” He tilted his head to the side. Did he miss something? It took a lot out of him to turn Chuuya away especially after the stupid slug made his own revelations about the situation. 

You released the breath you were holding. Everyone else understood Dazai was just as oblivious to your feelings as always. Eventually you would have to tell him but it was still early enough in the process to figure that out. At least everyone else in the office knew why you’ve been acting weird since that night.

Kunikida groaned at the realization. “I don't know if I can handle a mini Ranpo running around, let alone a mini Dazai.” He went back to his work. “It’s bad enough having to work with Dazai as is.”

You laughed as the two tried to defend themselves.

i have so fucking many aus so i'll ramble about a few

my latest one takes inspiration from this post and it's basically, dazai takes in atsushi and the akutagawa siblings, but realizing he can't really find a job to support all of them at once, he decides to go and (try to) reopen odasaku's favorite curry place. there are a few issues.

he is Not a great cook

aku and gin don't know how to cook

the place is kind of a mess

so eventually he goes and calls up chuuya and he's like "hey, you know how to cook, can you help me" problem is, chuuya's pissed at him bc THIS is when he calls him again and it's not an explanation of why he left, not a "sorry for blowing up ur car", not any of that, it's just another favor. so his immediate response is "fuck you, no" and dazai has to nag him into coming and helping, this being via taking some random pm member for hostage and specifically requesting that chuuya come pick him up

chuuya does indeed arrive, but he also breaks dazai's nose, so dazai ends up vaguely explaining with an ice pack on his face lmfao. this bit is what i have planned most vividly and is hopefully? gonna be a fic i publish. but also, later, ranpo ends up at the curry place and is like "damn you live like this" and dazai replies just kinda, "either order or get out" but ranpo offers him a better job (that being working at the ada), and while he hesitantly agrees, it's only a part time thing for the first bit. also although i haven't decided yet i think he might also end up finding kyouka before the pm gets to her and tachihara before the hunting dogs find him bc i am weak to 1. found family 2. BIG found families.

chuuya is absolutely fucking baffled when he runs into dazai during an ada job, btw.

"i thought you ran a fucking curry shop" "i do that too" "?? what the fuck" "it's called being a PART TIMER chibi" "i'm gonna break your nose again"

anyway next au!!

cowboy au (btw, they still have abilities) where nathaniel is a travellng priest looking for a doctor to cure margaret who's deathly sick, and he hasn't really been having any luck (he's been searching for months to no avail), and eventually at this one town it's like.. it's late at night, nathaniel's thirsty, he heads to the bar to get some water. nikolai promptly swaps their drinks, nathaniel drinks something really strong and passes the fuck out, wakes up to being in an inn room (with noteably less money) and storms the hell out of the building just to find nikolai petting his horse and acting all innocent about doing anything. nathaniel just tries to leave, nikolai follows, and they travel like that for a bit (occasionally trying to kill each other) before they get the third member of their dysfunctional little party

do you remember that one kid fyodor killed?

this little guy (karma), is a pickpocket who steals nathaniel's bible in the hopes of selling it to get food. the two find him, both kinda realize his situation and while nathaniel is about to point him in the direction of the town's local church nikolai goes "fuck that" and just straight up kidnaps him, and they keep traveling. nathaniel and nikolai are mutually, regrettably, falling for one another, but this just manifests as more murder attempts, to the point that one night, nathaniel tries to strangle nikolai, nikolai wakes up and strangles him back, and when nathaniel passes out he fucking dreams about nikolai and is HORRIFIED. things only get worse and gayer from there and i also think they go on a train at some point.

karma's enjoying the horse rides at least, and there's some other characters that show up though tbh idk who besides this one dazai scene and gin at one point

okay this other au is shorter, but basically: ada kajii. this is built off of SO many headcanons, but essentially kajii's backstory is just the lemon short story. except that kajii never found lemons, bc instead kunikida (his old friend/school friend that fell out of contact with him) reaches out, they become friends again, and so when kunikida joins the ada, so does kajii. kajii works as a clerk bc, like, he doesn't. know he has an ability. Oh Boy Does He Get A Surprise during dead apple

okay i was gonna talk about my eternal winter au but that would be an essay /lh

SO instead!! shiburan au, an au i never. properly named beyond that it's a shibusawa x ranpo focused au. also co owned with my bestie @feralshadowdemon <33

basically, yokohama is a smaller, calmer seaside town, no abilities or anything. shibusawa moves in, working at the pet shop across the street from this coffee shop that's connected to a bookstore. the coffee shop is run by (most of) the ada, and the bookstore is run by yokomizo; mushitaro and poe work there. the members of the ada who work at the coffee shop are fukuzawa (he owns it), ranpo, kunikida, and yosano. dazai is fukuzawa's newest adopted kid, and ran away from home. (he was living with mori (and elise) before) yosano Understands his situation, having done the same years before.

ranpo starts going over to the pet shop a lot, both bc he's running errands (fukuzawa owns three cats) and bc he likes talking to shibusawa. they eventually exchange phone numbers and start texting. in the background of this, btw, is soukoku: they had a messy breakup years ago, they act like they don't like each other, etc etc normal skk things. the flags are a biker gang who are alive and well here, and chuuya hangs out with them a lot. dazai is a bit jealous of them, ranpo knows this, and so when chuuya starts volunteering at the pet shop, ranpo brings dazai along on an errand run so the two run into each other again. they start talking again, slowly bonding again by virtue of wingmaning shiburan

the akutagawa siblings live with hirotsu

fukuchi is the hunting dogs' dad; except for tetchou, who's jouno's boyfriend. he has stricter parents.

odango is engaged here but oda travels a lot so they haven't got married yet

ango works in an office in the big city, but he visits dazai sometimes. they are friends

basically i want to discuss how Atsushi’s image of Dazai and other influential characters in his life have changed over the course of the story. including his own ability, the White Tiger itself

also, i plan on doing a copium-driven theory of how zenki soukoku may mirror soukoku’s reuniting from chapter 31 in a future chapter, which should be posted before chapter 106 hopefully

also also, i want to decipher Dazai’s mental gymnastics a bit as his dialogue in ch105 is making my analyst brain cells tingle but this might take a while to write, so it might be posted next month? idk

🔺spoilers for chapter 105 (the most recent chapter as of writing this), chapters 24, 28-29, 35, 39, 51-53, 63-64, 84-87, 102, and 103.5, and Dead Apple🔻

i won’t lie, this ended up being pretty long. skip to the end of the post for a pseudo-TLDR of my main points for chapter 105 specifically if you don’t feel like reading it all

First, we have the man who stole the show from Atsushi; Dazai

We start, not at the very beginning, but the first event that sparked Atsushi's development of Dazai's image beyond just seeing him as his superior in the ADA.

I’m sure we all can recognize this panel, from back in chapter 24 when Atsushi began to fall to the inner turmoil over his ability all over again. Dazai would have none of it, doing the only thing he knows how to do as a ‘mentor’. He physically slaps Atsushi to shock him out of his train of thought, and then proceeds to say some of the most meaningful lines to ever come out of his mouth; he tells Atsushi that he can’t wallow in self-pity, because all it would do is trap him in an endless nightmare. This is really the first time Dazai has given straight-up advice to Atsushi in a way that’s clear and forward, instead of saying it in some weird riddle for Atsushi to figure out on his own.

I think this is important because it’s only after this point that Atsushi begins to turn to Dazai in his mind when he needs to come up with plans on his own.

In situations where Atsushi isn’t sure what to do or needs to come up with a plan on his own, he uses Dazai as a point of reference. ‘What would Dazai do?’ He also firmly believes that Dazai will be there to support him, as we see in chapter 28 and 29 where he jumps out of the Moby Dick and does all he can to deliver Kyuusaku’s Dogra Magra doll to Dazai, which is a plan he made all on his own just with the firm belief that Dazai would be there to nullify the doll. This is reinforced by Dazai telling him that he was indeed waiting for Atsushi to land with the doll.

A little less important for Dazai’s development is chapter 39. In 39, Atsushi asks Dazai of all people for advice on how to express how he feels after finding out the Orphanage Director died, despite the fact that Dazai 1. never had a father figure either besides Mori, and 2. is one of the most emotionally constipated characters in the entire series. This just proves that Atsushi believes he can rely on Dazai for more than just things relating to the ADA, which I think stemmed from Dazai’s lines in chapter 24. There’s also the few times where Atsushi begins to notice and understand Dazai’s facial expressions, and generally understands his mental gymnastics a little bit better.

Nothing else of note happens between Atsushi and Dazai until chapter 63, where Atsushi ‘hallucinates’ Dazai for the first time. Atsushi is essentially on his own at this point, and he knows this, which makes him begin to doubt himself. This moment of self doubt sparks the hallucination of Dazai asking Atsushi if he was going to give up that easily, which gives Atsushi the little push he needed to ask himself ‘What would Dazai do?’ in this situation. From there, he’s able to confidently come up with a detailed plan based on the information available to him. Just like Dazai would do.

After that, the focus of the story becomes pretty scattered honestly. We rarely see the same characters month to month, including Atsushi. The only two points after chapter 63 are in chapter 102, where Dazai tells Atsushi (in his mind) that he needs to wake up because he’s running out of time, and in chapter 105, where Dazai appears at the end of the cast of characters Atsushi sees. Dazai is the last character to appear, to point him (quite literally) in the right direction, to tell him he needs to keep going, as the last bit of encouragement Atsushi needed in order to move forward with what he thinks is the best course of action.

Atsushi, in the beginning, saw Dazai as his superior in the ADA, his coworker, not much different than the other members. As the story progressed and Dazai gave Atsushi advice and continued to point him towards the end goal again and again, no matter how hopeless it seemed, Atsushi now sees Dazai as someone he can look at for inspiration when the situation looks dire, and when all other options are exhausted. Dazai will be there, metaphorically or literally, because Atsushi believes he will be.

Next, let’s talk about the Orphanage Director (aka, the Headmaster)

Besides being single-handedly the worst character in the entire story, the Headmaster serves as one of the major influences over how Atsushi views his ability and his capabilities. His self doubt comes from the abuse at the hands of the Headmaster, who convinced Atsushi he essentially had no worth as a human being.

The first time we see Atsushi hallucinate the Headmaster outside of the typically flashbacks in the beginning is in chapter 28, while Atsushi is trapped on the Moby Dick. Just as he starts to think of what he can do in his situation, the Headmaster appears to spew his doubt of Atsushi’s capabilities. The distraction is momentary, as Atsushi is able to physically swipe away the hallucination after telling the Headmaster to shut up. This is one of the rare times he’s able to confidently defy the words of the Headmaster, which is important considering this occurs after Atsushi’s accident under the influence of Dogra Magra.

Directly after that comes the depressing chapter 29, where we actually see some of the things the Headmaster did to Atsushi. In the span of this one chapter, however, we also learn that besides being a gross example of unrestricted child abuse, the Headmaster had his reasons (albeit twisted, morally wrong, and just plain messed up ones) for his actions. The most obvious reason is Atsushi’s uncontrollable ability. From the flashback in Dead Apple, it’s probably safe to assume that Atsushi’s ability turned him into a fully-grown or mostly fully-grown tiger from the very beginning. The Headmaster kept Atsushi locked up in a cell by himself to minimize the damage done by the tiger. Another reason for his actions was because that’s how he was treated as a child, as he was coincidentally also raised in an abusive orphanage, and humans grow up heavily influenced by those who raised them and the environment surrounding that. To the Headmaster, being abusive was probably the only way he knew how to raise children. Finally, the Headmaster specifically wanted Atsushi to hate him because he was a horrible person. He wanted Atsushi to see his evilness and be repulsed by it, so that when Atsushi saw worse evils outside of the orphanage, he’d naturally hate them, too. The Headmaster also drilled the thought into Atsushi’s head that saving people would give him self worth, so he should do his utmost to save as many people as he could.

Of course, absolutely none of those reasons can excuse the Headmaster’s actions and abuse of Atsushi and the other children in the orphanage. He was truly, and justifiably the worst character in Atsushi’s life. If anything, in the end, he deserved to die.

Dazai’s words to Atsushi in chapter 29 also help him realize that while, yes, he went through absolute hell at the orphanage, that hell raised him to be the person he is now.

The Headmaster appears as a hallucination of sorts in chapter 52 towards the end of shin soukoku’s fight with Ivan. He doesn’t say anything, but Atsushi acknowledges his presence anyway, telling Aku that the Headmaster, despite being dead, still lives in Atsushi’s mind. But, Atsushi understands that as long as he follows a righteous path and saving people, he can rid himself of the Headmaster eventually.

It’s also notable that he does not appear in chapter 105, meaning he doesn’t hold as much influence over Atsushi as he used to compared to the characters who do show up.

In the end, Atsushi has come to terms with the fact that while the Headmaster made his childhood miserable, and caused him a lot of mental anguish, the misery did it’s job of teaching Atsushi to be a good person. Although in a twisted, unhealthy way.

Let’s move on to Akutagawa

Aku doesn’t hold as much influence over Atsushi compared to the previous two characters, but Atsushi’s image and opinion of Aku has definitely changed over time

At the beginning, Atsushi had plenty of reasons to see Aku as just a dangerous mafioso who kills others in a gross display of strength. This view never really changes much in the beginning of their forced partnership, and Aku also continuously tries to pick fights with Atsushi on missions, so he’s not helping his case much.

The first time this begins to change is chapter 35, during the fight between shin soukoku and Fitzgerald. Atsushi decides to ask Aku if he’s foolish for wanting to escape the past (his childhood trauma) by fighting to save others. Aku answers yes, he is foolish. Because the pain of the past has nothing to do with who Atsushi is now. Atsushi commits this to the back of his mind, and in return, offers Aku the fact that Dazai probably already acknowledged him a long time ago. This trade of confirmation marks the true beginning of development in how Atsushi sees Akutagawa.

The next time they’re forced to work together is chapter 51-53, where it seems like Atsushi’s views haven’t changed much, but that’s not necessarily the case. Atsushi reuses the point that he sees Aku as someone who jumps to murder before thinking about the mission, which is true considering Aku wanted to fight Atsushi instead of focus on their mission. However, after Atsushi insults Aku, instead of trying to kill him, Aku kind of just accepts it. And whatever expression he made, Atsushi certainly saw it and understood it. After this, Aku and Atsushi have their first real conversation about their individual motives for fighting. This gives them a better understanding of each other, and serves as the catalyst for Aku’s follow up question near the end of their fight with Ivan. Atsushi reveals that the Headmaster still haunts him, so he must continue to save others to rid himself of his past, which Aku accepts as a good enough answer to make the biggest development in their partnership: the Black Tiger Claws singularity. Not to mention, some of their lines from these chapters revealed that the two of them understand each other better because they tried to kill each other so much. Atsushi also seems to be putting more trust in Aku, which probably comes from understanding his motivations and seeing Aku’s attitude changing slowly since chapter 35. Chapter 53 is also when Atsushi made Aku promise to not kill anyone for 6 months.

Then, of course, we have chapters 84-87. Atsushi is at the end of his rope, facing Fukuchi in an impossible 1 vs 1. He’s desperate, wishing he wasn’t alone to face such an evil force. In that moment of despair, Akutagawa appears to offer assistance. Atsushi is surprised, but he realizes that he is no longer alone, because Akutagawa is there. Atsushi has developed his view of Aku from an unreliable and unpredictable murder-hungry mafioso, to a mostly reliable but undeniably strong ally, so much so that he believes the two of them together can beat Fukuchi. Aku also reveals that he’s kept his promise to not kill anyone, which allows Atsushi to further develop his trust in Aku as an ally and partner. Plus, in their strategizing, they both show that they use soukoku as a point of reference for coming up with the best plan based on what they would do.

The biggest show of development is when Atsushi places his full trust in Aku at the end of their fight, as they charge towards each other. Atsushi, now that he’s seen how Aku has grown as a person to become Atsushi’s strongest partner and ally, is able to believe in Aku to know the silent plan between them like their predecessors in soukoku.

“I can’t afford to disappoint Dazai-san”

Akutagawa was there to assist Atsushi on Dazai’s orders. And Atsushi knows this.

Atsushi even acknowledges the trust that has built up between the two of them that got them to this point, as the powerful new generation of soukoku. From enemy to ally, Atsushi has accepted Aku as his partner. Now if only Aku hadn’t died and got vampire-d…

Akutagawa appears as a hallucination in chapter 105, not to insult Atsushi, but to offer a push in the right direction. Look outside, look at what’s ahead, look at the goal you need to reach. Look outside his mind and his past to see what’s waiting for him in the future.

Atsushi’s ability and his acceptance of the Tiger

Atsushi’s ability is pretty unique within the bsd world, considering he can sort of interact and talk to it as a separate entity from himself. The only other person we see do something even remotely close to this is Dostoy when he’s separated from his ability in Dead Apple, and he has a back-and-forth villain monologue with it. Mori can also interact with his own ability, but that’s because his ability is a manifestation, not something in his mind, so he doesn’t count.

In chapter 29, Atsushi is falling out of the sky after jumping from the Moby Dick and being hit by Twain. He’s unconscious, and is doubting his plans to save the city. The Tiger appears in his mind, and proceeds to lunge Atsushi, who allows himself to be attacked. Atsushi merely tells the Tiger to eat, as he hates himself the most, and embraces the Tiger’s head while thanking it for everything it’s done up until then. The Tiger, after hearing Atsushi thank it, suddenly takes over his body and fully transforms mid-air. The Tiger lands on the ground on its feet, as all cats do, despite breaking its own legs in the process. Atsushi’s body is completely unharmed, though. This is the first time the Tiger has acted on its own to save Atsushi (not counting his first battle with Aku).

In chapter 35, we see Atsushi outright ask for the Tiger’s help during the battle with Fitzgerald. This shows he’s beginning to see the Tiger as more than just a dangerous beast that lives inside him, but more as a force he can call upon in times of need for strength. He has no reason to believe the Tiger will listen, but he believes in it anyway, knowing it’s powerful enough to defeat the enemy in front of him.

The Tiger itself doesn’t appear in the manga again after this, but this is probably due to the events of Dead Apple. Dead Apple occurs sometime between the Guild Arc the Cannibalism Arc, and it’s the last time we see the Tiger appear in Atsushi’s mind. After defeating the Tiger in the real world, Atsushi can’t use his ability. In his mind, there’s a large door physically preventing him from using his ability, and only after it’s opened and he accepts what he did in the past that was forgotten, is he able to see the Tiger again. He commands the Tiger to return to him, calling it “Byakko”, meaning ‘White Tiger’ in Japanese. After this, they become one, and Atsushi is able to use an even stronger version of his ability during his fight with Shibusawa.

Calling the Tiger ‘Byakko’ is interesting because Byakko is a celestial creature in Japanese folklore that takes the form of a white tiger, and lives in the western sky. It is one of the four beast gods, represents the virtue of righteousness, and is strongly rooted in Taoism.

What’s important here is that after the events of Dead Apple, it seems like Atsushi has finally accepted the Tiger as part of himself.

Lastly, let’s mention the organizations themselves

The ADA

Of course, the Detective Agency offered Atsushi a home and a found family. At the beginning of the story, he felt bad for involving the people there in his battles, feeling guilty for getting others hurt because they had to save him. However, with enough reinforcement from the members, Atsushi developed confidence in himself and his ability to save and protect others. He also developed a level of trust for each of the members, believing they’re all strong in their own right, and together they can beat even the DOA. In chapter 105, Ranpo, Kunikida, and Kyouka appear in Atsushi’s mind and say things that are difficult to hear, but it’s things they would definitely say to Atsushi in a situation like that. Ranpo’s ‘What about this can’t you understand?’, Atsushi is conflicted about what he needs to do, but he does understand that he needs to do something. Kunikida’s ‘Failure is unacceptable.’, Atsushi knows that he can’t afford to fail, but he also knows that he alone can’t win the fights to come. Kyouka’s ‘You don’t have to do anything.’, Atsushi knows this is technically true if he believes he shouldn’t stop the DOA’s plans, but that’s not for him to decide. He chooses to leave the final decision to Fukuzawa, believing he’d know what to do in this situation.

The Port Mafia

This organization is the original enemy, and Atsushi knows this. The only member he truly trusts is Akutagawa. However, from the events in chapter 29 where he sees the PM doing everything in their power to preserve the city, he believes they could be an ally for the ADA in upcoming battles. He might not totally trust them or rely on the PM to be proper allies, but he does know that they’re a powerful organization that cares about the city and is willing to do just about anything to protect it.

The Guild, but mainly Fitzgerald

The Guild was never an option to work with, they presented themselves as an enemy and were defeated in the end. Atsushi would never be willing to work with The Guild as it was during its arc, but Fitzgerald by himself is another story. He has a powerful weapon, the camera network Eyes of God, at his disposal. Atsushi knows that, and given Fitzgerald also has no allies similar to the ADA during the Hunting Dogs arc, Atsushi believes he might be able to convince Fitzgerald to work with him in chapter 63 and 64. He also knows that Fukuzawa would probably scold him for making a deal with Fitzgerald, but he does it anyway after seeing Mitchell in desperate need of help. Fitzgerald appears in chapter 105 to cast doubt upon Atsushi, saying that nobody expects anything from him, but Atsushi knows that that’s not true anymore. The ADA and his friends believe in him, so he must keep moving.

The end.

Those are all the points I had, after rereading the majority of the series to see the development in real time now that I have so much of the story available to read all at once. Atsushi has accepted his ability as a part of himself, not as a dangerous burden for him to carry. Chapter 105 shows that Atsushi’s views of the people in his life have certainly changed and developed over time, but at the same time, it shows how Atsushi sees their influence over him as well. The 3 ADA members are pretty general, saying something you’d expect them to say. Fitzgerald doubts Atsushi by himself, only working with him because he thinks the ADA has the best chance to win. Akutagawa reminds Atsushi that he’s not bound by the past, that he needs to look outside towards the future and towards the end goal. Dazai doesn’t have anything to say, because he doesn’t need to, he merely needs to point Atsushi in the right direction.

ik a common pet peeve ppl have with media is that trope of a villain having a really good point about society then immediately killing a baby to achieve it or smth and how it's used by people in power to demonize these criticisms of them. but i do think in bsd when antagonists make a good point it still stands and it's still a good point regardless of what they do about it, and the narrative does not want you to perceive them entirely negatively. like, there's a reason atsushi spends a few chapters in a conflict bc he agrees with fukuchi's ideas, just thinks his methods are harmful. the story lingers on it bc it wants you to stop and think and see the good in them, i think, and not to be mean and turn it around like a "gotcha! you are just as bad for agreeing!" or smth.

i think it all stems from how every character in bsd is morally grey in order to humanize them. every antagonist is presented in a positive light at some point (only exception i can think of is fyodor, who so far hasn't been presented in a really grey way either), their motives or ideals are laid out so you can understand WHY they're doing the things they're doing, and eventually they end up working with the protagonists because well. they're all humans at the end of the day.

the thing driving all protagonists in bsd is simply to keep living (each have their own asterisk next to that, but i won't get into details) and usually keep others safe. they beat the forces that stand in their way of achieving this, but for a moment, these forces' own goals get reflected back onto them, and they become a vehicle for them as well, at times.

it's less of a "villain makes a good point then kills a baby to make you disagree with them", more like "villain makes a good point but the story lingers on it so both you and the in-universe characters think about it and consider it. they also kill a baby but that's more like a personal character flaw that might get ironed out of them with the power of friendship"

that's also why wildly loved characters that are generally considered positive start out trying to kill the protags (akutagawa, chuuya, lucy, poe, sigma, the hunting dogs etc). you know WHY they do this. you know what led them here. you also saw other sides to them - silly moments, helping their comrades or innocent bystanders, positive interactions with the main cast - which help make them feel more human, thus making them easier to understand for us as readers.

EDIT: i will also add!!!! that imo fyodor seeming purely evil despite bsd's attempt at humanizing its characters!!!! is less of a fault in writing but rather showing how he dehumanizes HIMSELF. he views himself as more than human. characters like sigma view him as more than human. and so, for now, the narrative will treat him as such too - not bc he's right. but bc it serves his current story, and hopefully a future arc will have him unlearning that, or more layers will be peeled from him so at least we as an audience can see his humanity (i have a feeling the information sigma got from him + the injury dazai gave him + him being bested in general + whatever the fuck "that man" comment was, will all play a part in that)

Writing Reflection

This year was a crazy writing year, if I'm being completely honest, and in many different ways. The biggest change for me this year in terms of writing was discovering the JBBingo, along with AUgust, they really both inspired and pushed me to create more writing content and I loved taking a part in both of them.

The goal of this year is to pretty much finish write and share more than I have done this year, so hopefully 250000~ or more words this time around.

Do you believe in the theory that Tanizaki is connected to the Book?

Hello Anon! Thank you for sending this ask, and sorry for my delayed response, I haven't been able to sit down on my computer for two or so days. Honestly,, I have no idea what theory you're referring to? I tried looking for a post about it on Tumblr, but I could not find anything. If you'd like to send me a link in DMs or through my askbox, or even in the replies of this post, that would be great, as I'd love to read about this theory.

As for my current thoughts, if I'm being honest, it never even crossed my mind that Tanizaki may be connected to the book. I feel like it would be unlikely that a supporting cast member would end up playing such a pivotal role-- more likely, the book has some connection to Atsushi, or Dazai, perhaps.

On the flip side, I think the main evidence that might support the idea that Tanizaki might have some connection is his ability. Illusion projection doesn't necessarily equate Reality altering, but it's a little bit similar? Like, Tanizaki's ability is a severely dampened version of the Book's power, if you really stretch the details. This feels like too much of a stretch though, because, again, I feel like it's unlikely that Tanizaki would wind up having a super significant connection to the Book.

But: I have stated before that I believe Tanizaki has altered his own reality, metaphorically speaking. Like, we know that he's suppressed memories of his entrance exam at least, and there's also a possibility that he's lying and/or deluded about his alleged "normal past" as a High school student. And we know that memory alteration is one of the effects that the Book can have when used. So, there's definitely a possible connection there, less that Tanizaki may be intrinsically tied to the book, and more that the book may have been used in the past in such a way that Tanizaki's backstory was amended. Still, I think it's very much a tinfoil hat theory, since we don't really have any concrete evidence, just speculation that it's a possibility.

I'm not sure if I've guessed what the "theory" you're referring to in your ask is or not, but hopefully I've covered most of the bases? Sorry if this didn't quite answer your question, Anon, but I enjoyed speculating regardless :) Thanks again, and have a nice day!

A pair of lips delicately brush your cheek. Your eyes flutter open, groggily blinking the sleep from your eyes as you slowly register the owner of the offending lips. To no one’s surprise, it’s Dazai’s smug face that beams back at you, grin softening as he teases, “Look who fell asleep again~ If you weren’t so cute, I might be offended y’know?” His playful pout causes you to giggle, your boyfriend already helping to make waking up so much less vexing than usual.

Retaliating to his teasing remarks, you attempt to ruffle his messy tuft of black hair but find that his head is sadly more than an arm’s length away, much to your dismay. The plan was to make brownies. So, why is Dazai furiously beating a bowl of grainy “whipped cream” that he’d made using a combo of water and specifically granulated, not confectionary, sugar? Why is more brownie batter on cabinet doors than in the baking pan? Why is the salt tipped onto its side, spilling its entire contents into some kind of abstract shape on the countertop?

One reason: food fight. Maybe your abundant sleeping habits had finally caught up to you, but you had never felt as invigorated and actively mischievous as you had when you’d swiped some brownie batter onto your boyfriend’s face. It was worth it! You think. You thought. Dazai’s brown hues absolutely shined with mirth at your pathetic attempt of provoking him. You were prepared for him to laugh it off and call you adorable, maybe naive for playing with fire, but ultimately he would chuckle and move on. Except, that did not happen. Instead, he had immediately retaliated with an even bigger glop thrown into your hair, partly accidentally and partly to be a li’l gremlin, and oh boy, it just escalated from there.

The whipped cream Dazai had whipped up for “quick ammunition” was quickly used up - Dazai scooped it, and the heap had seemed to grow impossibly bigger with every additional spoonful. Currently, his smile was widening and creepily stretching ear-to-ear as his starry eyes zeroed in on your vulnerable form.

The ruthless battle continued for a while, but after finally agreeing to a truce, you both couldn’t help but stare at the resulting mess with equally blank stares.

“Mm... okgoodnightbabe! I’ll see you in the morning!” You almost trip over yourself as you flee, throwing a cursory glance at your incredulous boyfriend before giggling and rushing to close the bedroom door before he can follow. You could clearly picture Dazai’s pout in your mind as the sound of his footsteps fades towards the kitchen. Smiling fondly, you quickly change into your pajamas and hop into your shared bed to wait for his return. However, listening to the distant clanging of bowls and whooshing of the tap water proved to be an effective lullaby, and you couldn’t help it as your eyes began to flutter and eventually stay closed.

By the time Dazai finishes cleaning, the dark night sky was starting to brighten and mix with the warm oranges and reds of sunrise. He quietly opens your bedroom door and is met, not really to his surprise, by your sleeping lump of a body. Dazai’s brows furrow slightly, but he quickly notices the open book laying by your form and realizes that you had been up waiting for him. He could also tell you by the blankets messily strewn around you - usually you preferred having them wrapped around you like a tight burrito.

At that, Dazai lightly chuckles, his heart warming at the thought. He takes his time putting on a fresh set of clothes and rolls his eyes as he ever-so-gently tucks the blankets over you. The bed shifts as he climbs in carefully, but Dazai quickly freezes as you start to mumble quietly. Your words are inaudible, even as Dazai strains his ears to hear any (possible) secrets that you could be spouting. Shifting restlessly, you roll around and suddenly shoot out your arm, making an interesting grabby motion. Dazai almost lets out a laugh as he wonders what in the world you could be looking for, but his eyes widen when you make contact with your boyfriend and immediately calm down, hand gripping his shirt loosely.

As your body relaxes, Dazai feels a wide smile creep up his face, adoring and almost grossly soft. And he lets it. He just can’t help himself - he leans in and places an affectionate kiss on your forehead, lingering there before pulling back and squeezing next to you under the covers. He shifts your arm into a more comfortable position, and as you unconsciously flip to face him, Dazai’s eyes soften into a sweet but intensely warm chocolate brown. If you had been awake to open your eyes, you would have witnessed a rare but genuine sight: your boyfriend’s peaceful expression illuminated by the quiet sunlight of dawn, his eyes deeply staring into yours with endless messages of comforting assurance and happiness, and his lips subtly quirking into a tenderly loving smile shared only for the two of you.

Dazai Osamu was nothing if he was not reliable (in his own weird little way). Yes, he's a goofball seen to not take much seriously but when you need him, he's there on the drop of a dime.

A storm waged on outside, every gush of wind, boom of thunder and clack of heavy rain flooded your ears. Every time wind so much as brushed a tree branch against your home it provoked a harsh flinch. Every minute the storm waged on it felt as though the pace at which your hands shook quickened and and the more rough and forceful your heart banged against your chest.

"Make it stop, please..." The useless begging to no one in particular came out as a whisper. There wasn't much you, or anyone could do to make this situation suddenly cease.

You lightly rested your head against the wall. As you sat, tucked into the corner to avoid as many windows possible, you glanced over at your phone screen, currently the only source of light that dimly illuminated your bedroom. Every time the lights flickered your heart had skipped a beat so it was best to turn those things off before the worst part of the storm even arrived. For maybe the third time since you heard the first clap of thunder you debated calling Dazai.

He'd probably come, yes, but he would get soaked on the way over and might end up catching a cold because of it. Could he even safely get to where you lived through all the mess going on outside? Streets were borderline flooded and Dazai didn't own a car (you doubted he even had a license) and what were the chances that cab drivers were even operating through this?

It would be best to not call. That's what you decided on...

BOOM!

A much louder than usual clap of thunder blared across your ears and sent a shiver up and down your spine. Your hands went for you phone faster than your mind could exactly process. In practically one swift movement Dazai's number was dialed, you memorized the series of numbers as though it was how to spell your name long ago and it was safe to say that it stuck.

The feeling of doubt and thoughts of hesitance washed away as you finally hit the call button.

Two rings, it always took two rings for Dazai to pick up.

"Yes, Belladonna?" His voice was enough to bring an immense sense of peace wash over you, only for a moment. A loud gust of wind made your throat run dry and the anxiety pool back up as quickly as Dazai's voice made it wash away.

"D-Dazai," It was hard to form words, you felt as though you were straining every muscle in your body to force them out.

"Is everything okay, Y/n?" His voice sounded more urgent than it did before. He picked up on your tone of voice, how could he not?

"Can you come over, please?" Almost immediately you could hear the shuffling of Dazai getting up.

"I'm on my way. The storm has you shaken up?" He asked and you could hear the volume of the rain become a lot louder. He already stepped outside his apartment.

"Mhm.." Your answer came out as a feeble hum. You weren't shocked that he already knew what was wrong, he was always good at doing that.

"I'll be there in 10 minutes, alright?" His voice remained steady but it was subtly laced with concern.

"Alright.. Stay safe, Dazai," A small rise of guilt bubbled up in you over the fact you had your partner outside during a huge thunderstorm just to see you.

He gave you a small laugh, the one that always made you smile. "Of course, Belladonna, I'll stay safe. See you in just a few minutes, alright?"

"Okay."

The phone slipped out of your hands once the call ended. The rain and wind seemed a little quieter. You couldn't tell if the storm was easing up, or if you were just relieved that Dazai was on his way to help.

Hopefully, both.

By the time Dazai got there the storm did ease up a little. Rain kept up a consistent heavy pace but the strong blows of wind that tilted the trees outside seemed to be occurring less and less. You couldn't tell when was the last time you heard any thunder.

"It's me," Dazai announced upon stepping into your home, his shoes squeaked just as loud as his voice as he slipped them off at the doorway.

When he stepped into your bedroom you noticed he was missing his signature trenchcoat and his hair was messy, starting to fuzz up after having to dry it from the rain. His glare was soft, lacking its using tantalizing glint.

"I'm sorry I didn't get here sooner," He takes long strides to get in front of you before offering a hand to help you up from your sitting position. "Are you tired?"

You took a soft hold on his hand and hefted yourself up, legs a little weak from having them hugged up against your chest. "Yeah, a little," You answered. If panicking over a storm was anything it was exhausting, especially by the end of it.

Dazai hugs you flush against his figure, his clothes weren't that damp, you figured he buttoned up his trenchcoat and it was somewhere air drying now.

He took a few steps back holding you to get to your bed, breaking the hug for a moment to pull back the covers.

A sigh of relief escapes your lips as you both got into the bed under the abundance of sheets and cover you have, no space was left in between the two of you. Your head rested on his chest and his arms were wrapped tightly against your waist.

Dazai could feel you stiffen when a small gust of wind passed.

"Shhh," He hushed, lightly, somehow pulling you closer. "Just listen to me." His breaths got a little deeper and you took note of his heartbeat. Its was soothing, any traces of panic and anxiety was fully washed away and it felt like nothing could bring the feeling back, not when you're in Dazai's arms.

Things remained like that even after the sun was showcased once again. Things were abnormally quiet when you took Dazai's loud personality into thought but he knew this was no time to tease or to make his stupid jokes– not yet, anyway. At the moment, the only thing that mattered was you, and there wasn't any way that his attention could be shifted from you to anything else in the world.

Dazai was nothing if he was not reliable.

what happens when your food cravings change? normally you’d be in charge of food, but now that you’re pregnant he tries to take care of that whenever he can so you don’t have to keep cooking and get more rest. okay get this: he has a whole ass notebook to keep track of what you like and don’t like throughout the pregnancy so he doesn’t accidentally bring back some food that’ll make you sick.

also changes the entire layout of the room so the bed will be closer to the restroom. all so you don’t have to walk too long to get there, he knows you keep having to get up to pee all the time. he’s trying to make it so there’s less work for you as possible.

understands that you might get mood swings through the pregnancy so he’s extra patient, even though he’s fairly hot-headed himself. but when he reminds himself that you’re carrying his baby, it’s not that hard for him to be patient after all. sometimes when you suddenly lash out for no reason, you find him ever so subtly smiling as he looks at your bump and it calms you down too, to know he already loves the baby this much.

he knows you fall asleep easier with your head on his chest, and so he makes sure that every night you get that, as long as it helps to soothe your headaches. he always lets you lean against him, one arm around you and his finger tracing patterns on your scalp. it relaxes you so he does this all the time.

after all the false labors, when the baby actually comes? the look on his face as he carries the baby in his arms when they’re born? you think all the pain is worth it, because chuuya looks at the baby with so much love, and now there’s two people you’d risk your life for, and you’re glad for it.

What proof is that Sakura is popular in Japan? Gimme proof, that's literally all I'm asking.

I don’t really get into the popularity arguments so I had to do some research on this and get help from somebody else.

For starters, On pixiv, the Japanese tag for Sakura, she has more works than any other main character or pairing, even more than Sasuke and Naruto, Hinata, Kakashi, etc, as well as SasuSaku.

Although it’s China, there was a Sakura Haruno exhibit in Shanghai. (Info on that can be found here)

Some good ol’ possessiveness can never hurt anyone… or, it’ll never hurt me, at least. Dazai’s Darling doesn’t have the same guarantee, apparently.

You weren’t sure when, but at some point, you’d come to the conclusion that there were two very different, very distinctive Dazais.

One was your partner, obviously. The man who left wildflowers on your desk every morning, when you still worked, the lover who always knew just what to say, the thoughtful person who would wipe away your tears and reassure you with quick, chaste kisses every time you found yourself overwhelmed. You loved this side of Dazai, and for the most part, he was the one present whenever you interacted with the boy in question. You were thankful for that, and you often found yourself happy to just be around him, like he was around you. Because he loved you. And you loved him.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the Dazai sitting in front of you, right now.

You kept your head bowed as your kneeled in front of him, hard wood forming harsh indents in your knees. They’d be bruised the next morning, no doubt, but having Dazai’s sweeter side come out as he bandages and frets over the minor wounds might be worth the temporary pain. Dazai, meanwhile, towered above you as he leaned forward, legs open, as to better peer down on you. He didn’t seem satisfied with your downcast gaze, a gauze-wrapped hand quickly slipping under your chin, tilting your head back to face him.

“Did you forget who you’re supposed to be paying attention to, again?” He asked, a poison you hadn’t heard in months dripping from his lips. You could feel his eyes burning holes into your neck, adding to the discolored spots, the bruised hickeys, the still bleeding cuts stretching from your jaw to your collar bones, placed strategically in a way that made the marks impossible to hide. Everyone at the agency would notice, everyone in Yokohama would notice. If he even let you go outside again, you mean. “I thought we already agreed you wouldn’t be letting your mind wander, anymore. Especially considering that little stunt you pulled.”

You swallowed back your nerves, fight the urge to flinch as his thumb rubbed circles in a particularly nasty bruise. “I-I’m sorry, sir,” You mumbled, more out of instinct than any actual sense of regret. “I won’t happen again, I promise.”

He only hummed, shifting, looking down on you a little more with every movement. “And what are you sorry for, angel? You know what you did wrong, don’t you?”

“I… I talked to Atsushi.” His grip around your chin tightened, nails digging into your skin despite the pleasant, calm smile still plastered over his features. It’d always scared you, how cold that expression could be, sometimes. But, you made sure to bury the feeling as soon as it’d resurfaced. “I’m sorry I talked to him without your permission. You told me not to, but I did, and I shouldn’t have.”

Dazai took a moment to scan over you, only releasing you when he realized you were beginning to tear-up. With a sigh, Dazai leaned back, letting you stare hopefully before he relented, gesturing for you to stand, if only to pull you into his lap as soon as you were on your feet. You didn’t argue, only repositioning yourself to straddle him, slotting your face into the crook of his neck and pressing yourself against him, suddenly so desperate to escape the freezing air biting at your open wounds. If the affection did anything to satisfy Dazai’s anger, he didn’t show it, still acting like he was doing you a favor by running his hands over your hips, planning his next bite, his next bruise, his next punishment.

Hot breath fanned against your shoulder, his grin soon pressing into your skin, teeth brushing too close for your comfort. “You’re so beautiful, like this,” He mumbled, his voice quieter than it had been, but never losing that raw, distant brutality. It was the measured type, Dazai’s special brand of calculation never failing to leave you hiding your face in his shirt, hands balling around the fabric as his lips ghosted over an unmarked patched of skin. There was no warning, no fanfare, no warning as canines sunk into thin-skin, Dazai taking a moment to suck and bite before he thought to pull away. “Missed a spot,” He explained, much more bluntly than you’d like. “I can’t let you think I’m getting soft, now, can I?”

You attempted to reassure him, to make sure he knew you’d never believe that, but the words died as soon as they could form. Trying to force something out only resulted in a pitiful squeak of a sound, tears quickly becoming impossible to hold back, just as much out of frustration as they were out of the aching pain in your back. The breakdown was almost instant, but it was just what your loving, caring boyfriend had been waiting for, nimble fingers soon tracing patterns in your back, falling to your hips as he held you against his chest, lifting you with him as he stood.

You knew what came next. Dazai would clean your wounds, change the clothes you were still wearing, and shower you in as much love and affection as you could stand, in one night. He’d tuck you into bed, then climb in next to you and pretend he didn’t notice when you sobbed yourself to sleep, and neither of you would talk about it, the next morning. He followed a routine, and he liked it when you did, too.

You weren’t oblivious. You knew how fucked up it was, how abusive he could be, how you didn’t do anything to deserve the way he treated you, and most of all, you knew Dazai was irrational, possessive, crazy. You could leave, you should leave, but... 

This was Dazai’s worse side, his sadistic side.

And you really did love the kind Dazai, your Dazai. Too much to think about leaving, and far too much to go through with it.

Even if that side of him was becoming a little less common, these days.
