The Mari Lwyd Twitter saga (2020 - part three)
This is part of my efforts to transcribe @seananmcguire's holiday Mari Lwyd Twitter threads. The hashtag for now is #Mari Lwyd Project, the first post is here, the thread's source is here.
(Many thanks to @dor-min on finding and linking this one!)
There are a couple from this year that are short, and even single replies that Seanan likely didn't have time to reply to. So this is their collection! Authors will be linked in their comments as best I can.
CW for food, just in case.
Lorcan Murphy (Twitter): Alas were I only a mutual, Mari Lwyd I'd offer rhymes crucial. We'd barter o'er offering asked unpredictable Afore presenting a demanded varietal victual The dead from the living must bide dividual But this rhyme for the horse is purely volitional.
Seanan: Your rhyming's exquisite, So clean and refined. I'll grant you a visit, To seek cheese with rind, Or cheese that's been softened, Or processed or plain... When Mari Lwyd's summoned, She sings her refrain.
Cheese or beer! Cheese or beer! I know that you have it here!
Lorcan: Alas all my beer has been spilt in a pan And as unlikely it seems, my cheese melted and ran My flour and yeast in the oven to bake So I'm terrible short of scran you can take Bide if you can, I'll no make it a habit and I'll offer a pretzel and Welsh-German rabbit
---
Cassandra Khaw (Carrd / Twitter): A single wedge of manchego I do possess, Not a wedge nor a morsel more than that, If I was someone who had cheese in excess, I'd offer them to you, and have all your desires.
But lo, you bony equine, Such is all I can give: This lonely cheese of mine, I offer in tithe.
Seanan: To give when there's plenty Is glorious kind: But it's kinder by far When you've little but rind.
I am grateful to you, On this shortest of days, For your holiday spirit And generous ways.
---
The singles!
(I'm posting peoples' handles as I see them, will do my best here. If someone rhymed or made poetry and I couldn't find a 'do not repost' on their profile, I included it.)
John & Bucky: I’m just here to watch A skeletal horse seeking Cheese and wine through rhyme
Stephanie Annand: Alas! For the lack! Of cheese in my home; Will you accept yogurt As onward you roam?
Eleri: I have some ok parm, and a generic swiss A really good chevre would not go amiss This stupid pandemic has cut into my cheese-buying I'm afraid sharing these cheeses, the dead horse would send me flying.
Paige Wolf: Cheese and spiced wine You’ll definitely find; In my kitchen, I’ll fill up your cup!
Come in please, my friend! Time we will spend, In drinking and singing, Bottoms up!
warcabbit: Wassail, wassail? I give you mulled ale and a nice nutty cheese to boot.
It is the season Be kind without reason And generous with gifts and loot.
Stephanie Caitlyn: I do not have cheese, I only have curry, For when I did leave, It was in quite a hurry.
Into the headlights I peer like a deer, But with you I gladly will share my paneer.
Starry_Marie: I know there are many With rhymes that are better But one thing I do have - A large chunk of cheddar
@Chimaera.bsky.social: Oh Mare, at thy feet I lay Some Caveman Blue and olives today. Cambezola roasted with garlic cloves, Squeezed upon fine grilled bread loaves. A bit of Brie to melt your heart, A nutty Parm to fuel your start, Melted Gruyère to dip things in, & Queso fresco (you're looking thin)
Cake and Arsenic: Oh mari lywd, please don't feel down, With your big boney head, in your white cotton shroud, For you'll find that my larder is stocked full of cheese, And you're welcome to come and eat all that you please.
JLH: (not a mutual, but it seems fun and kinda inspired me) Dread equine I hear your call! And in my larder is a prize, A piece of asiago for your skeletal maw Please accept my gift and silence your cries.

The Breeze of Moving to Jamaica
Tumblr media
Jamaica is endowed with diversified flora and fauna and a plethora of other natural resources. Surprisingly, the term "Jamaica" is derived from the ancient Taino word "Xaymaca," which literally means "place of wood and water." Despite its small size, Jamaica has a huge global effect owing to its natural beauty, culture, music, gastronomy, sporting achievements, and amazing luxury properties in Jamaica.
Despite its beautiful surroundings, the health care on this tropical island isn't always up to par. Before you relocate to Jamaica, learn about the healthcare system and if your family might benefit from private medical insurance.
Key Reasons That Can’t Stop You From Moving To Jamaica
Job market
Jamaica has a mixed economic system, which implies that the economy is governed by both the private sector and the government. Primary businesses include tourism, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, banking, and insurance services.
Currently, the average monthly discretionary wage after taxes is $1000 USD. In 2014, the Jamaican and Chinese governments signed preliminary agreements for the construction of the Jamaican Logistics Hub(JLH).
This enterprise will capitalize on Kingston Harbour, the world's seventh-biggest natural harbor, and establish Jamaica as the fourth node in the global logistics system, alongside Dubai, Rotterdam, and Singapore.
With Jamaica at the crossroads of North-South and East-West shipping channels, the JLH plan aspires to make Jamaica the western hemisphere's transshipment center and the gateway to Europe and Africa. Once finished, the project is intended to provide countless jobs for Jamaicans as well as significant economic growth for the country.
Property information
The cost of acquiring a property in Jamaica nowadays may range from $2.5 million USD to $30,000 USD, according to Coldwell Banker Jamaica Realty. The average price per square meter for a downtown Kingston apartment is $750 USD.
A residential lot can cost anywhere from $9 million USD and $4500 USD, depending on size and location. Land near popular tourist attractions, as well as land near Kingston, tends to be more costly.
A month's rent in a high-end area like Norbrook or Jack's Hill might cost up to $3000 USD. However, within these same towns, there are several different housing possibilities that may be cheaper. For example, a single individual may rent a studio apartment in Norbrook for $300 USD per month, including utilities.
Neighborhoods
Jamaican communities are as diverse and fascinating as their residents. While Norbrook, Manor Park, and Havendale give the tranquil serenity that nature lovers seek, other destinations such as Constant Spring, Ocho Rios, Mandeville, Montego Bay, and May Pen are appealing owing to the plethora of activities and excitement they bring.
The best things about Jamaica:
Family Friendly
Hip and Trendy
Upmarket
Up and Coming
Schools and Education
Jamaica's educational system is based on the British educational system. The Ministry of Education is the branch of government in charge of the administration and management of public education (MoE).
The Ministry of Education oversees over 1000 Jamaican schools, which serve over 100,000 students and 20,000 teachers. Among the top high schools are Campion College, Immaculate Conception, Ardenne, and Glenmuir. Year after year, students from these prestigious colleges earn admission to the world's most prestigious universities, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania, MIT, and Oxford.
The Breeze That Jamaica Promises
A normal morning in Jamaica begins with a beautiful chorus of birds outside your window and the tantalizing fragrance of ackee and saltfish coming in from your neighbor's home. To get your mind focused and awake, drink a cup of Jamaica's world-renowned Blue Mountain coffee.
Dress comfortably. While the occasional shower of rain may fall throughout the island, the weather is likely to be beautiful. All year round, there is plenty of warmth and sunshine.
If you live in Kingston, you might be tempted to spend the first part of your day admiring the gorgeous flowers, rolling grass, and gigantic trees at Hope Gardens. Allow yourself to be tempted. Hope Gardens has a stellar reputation for being the first stop for wonderful friends and potential mates.
Stop by "Scotchies" for a hearty plate of Jamaica's famed jerk chicken or jerk pork for a great meal. Other typical dishes available at any of the numerous neighborhood eateries include oxtail, curried goat, and stew peas.
If you're feeling adventurous and prefer driving, take the Highway 2000 North-South connection to Ocho Rios or Negril. Ocho Rios (or "Ochi" as the locals name it) is a popular tourist destination with a number of eye-catching and heart-pounding attractions, including Dunn's River Falls, Dolphin's Cove, and the Green Grotto Caves. Negril is well-known for its out-of-the-ordinary culinary establishments like Rick's Cafe and Zimbali's Mountain Cooking Studio.
Not to mention the beautiful beaches. Swim and surf in Ocho Rios' James Bond Beach and Reggae Beach, as well as Negril's critically acclaimed seven-mile beach. Quad Nightclub, Escape 24/7, and Club Privilege are highly recommended for adrenaline seekers who want to remain in town and enjoy the nightlife.
Conclusion:
It is a nice and lovely location to live with such amazing villas in Jamaica. There are practically no boundaries to what you can do or where you can go. Don't worry about fitting in; after all, the country's official slogan is "Out of Many, One People." With Jamaica's worldwide impact growing and the country's economy improving, now is the time to follow the advice of reggae great Bob Marley and travel to Jamaica, "let's get together and feel okay!"

I just remembered this joke Jordan did at GRL where we were trying to convince their spouse to read Seditious Affair and Jordan, with a completely straight face, said: “yeah, the second book is the easiest to start with. You can just jump right into the Frey”
And I swear the entire table fucking LOST IT

One of the things I have always loved about 911 was that it's campy fun and Fan Fiction come to life. Like I never felt bad predicting past season hints because I knew I was maybe gonna be caught somewhere in the middle but the general tone would be rewarding in the storyline. But 5A broke that mold. Yes in my head I had many bold predictions for say the hostage situation but still it wasnt even in the middle of my guess. So I'm trying to be careful with 5B but there is so many exciting hints.
Like Maddie filming in the hospital. The way Oliver teased his sort of destroyed apartment. Then we had JLH posting with and we here in the background people talking about weapons and ext. Then Oliver again teasing Ryans seat in Maddie and Chims place.
I can literally build so many scenarios in my head about the possibilities. Is Buck attacked in his home? If he has to move, is he staying with Maddie, (telling it wouldn't be Taylor). The secrecy around everything Ryan/Eddie. I truly believe they only gave us these hints in regards to him because of the disappointment involved in 5A
Anyways I'm excited to just see whatever they bring us but I truly hope its more of the magic of season 2 and 3!!
Hi Nonnie! Thank you for this ask! ^u^
I feel you. It's why I've always tried on a personal level to avoid speculations. It honestly lowers the chances of being disappointed by eps when they air SO MUCH. And I learned that the hard way. I know the fun and thrill of speculations, I know the buzz of expectations, the issue is what happens if the show has a different vision than we do? It's not necessarily bad, but sometimes it's hard to see or feel that through the haze of disappointment, you know? So I think the answer is to be excited to see what they have in store, not to be excited for specific things we want. Does that make sense? And I guess that the best balance is a bit of hope and a bit of caution...
I'm really glad that despite being let down by season 5a, you're still excited for 5b! I'm glad we get to be excited together! :D There are def SO MANY good options for what it could bring us. And I honestly think the magic of seasons 2 and 3 is the magic of Buddifer and how incredible of a family unit they all are together. We still have Buddifer, so yeah, I trust that we still have that magic, even if it's sometimes muted, like when we got a less Buddifer in 5a...
Lots of hugs to you, lovely, and hope you’re gonna love 5b! xoxox
And if you or anyone else are looking for other replies of mine, you can find them in my ask tag. xoxox

re: your this is the bad place post... honestly, i got so upset i actually got myself a headache.
i wish i could be normal about this show ngl
Samsies! Except mine is a stomach ache because that's were I carry all my stress and anxiety 🙃🙃🙃 I also wish I could be normal about this show but my brain said no 💙
We know how good the show can be, and watching it crumble before our eyes is SO frustrating. Especially because the scenes that are good are good! Ryan fucking BROUGHT it with Eddie this season and it's so frustrating to see his incredibly important storyline sort of wedged in here and there while they waste so time on these side characters! And I enjoy the emergency calls, but did we need THAT much time for the spider call?! We could have JUST had the owner calling about not getting ahold of the pet-sitter and then seen the cops come in walking past the spider enclosures, and maybe spent a tiny bit longer unearthing and treating him.
Then they could have used the rest of the time for Eddie's breakdown instead of not showing him wrecking the room, cutting off the breakdown instead of letting Buck comfort his best friend, and then cutting off AGAIN in what looked like the middle of the scene explaining his feelings. We have waited SO LONG for this and to hear about his feelings!! It's SUCH a disservice to have that tacked on to the end of the episode and cut off like that. I mentioned in a previous ask too that if they want to have a deeper reconciliation with him and Bobby later that's fine, but if that's the case, WHY tell us that he apologized? If we aren't going to see it, especially if we're not seeing it because there's a bigger scene about it later, why tell us at all? Just let there be the bigger scene!
And why have those beautiful Madney scenes in Boston only to have them turn around the next episode and be like, "oh we're different people now so we're done forever" OFF SCREEN?! They absolutely need some time, and that's okay! But remember after Doug when they talked about it? We got that amazing "we just need a minute" scene! We could have gotten a call back to that of them getting back to LA and then saying "I think we might need another minute". I'm not worried about Madney, they're going to be fine and JLH and Kenny will slay their scenes as always and their eventual "starting over" will be sweet, but the way they are handling this part right now is a disservice to the characters and their love story.
And all of this for what?! So we can make time for this new character we don't even need? So we can drag the dead, rotting corpse of bt around for another 4-5 episodes? Please, I am SO tired.
This IS the Bad Place.

can I make a quick comment?
first of all, I love buddie. I love the chemistry, I love the implications of a love story such as this would represent, I love everything.
But! I also think that even if the writers haven't decided on it yet, I not only think this is the natural course because of how long they've let if grow, but also about where this characters are today and where they're heading.
And I'm not only talking about the big things (read the guardianship, the difference of their relationship to other friendships in the show) but also about how by not making them canon yet makes the entire story even better.
I love all the versions of this characters, but they're growing, they're maturing. And even if I loved them, says, in season two, I think that back then it wouldn't work. It would very likely crash and burn because neither of them were ready for it.
Do I hate to see what they're doing with ana and taylor here? Yes. Do I believe, in the thought of making a slow burn, that it's perfect? Also yes!
You said it before, and I totally agree that what this hetero ships are doing is show us why buddie is such a good match. But also, they're giving the opportunity for them to get to the point that the things that would tear them apart, in the beginning, no longer will. That the people they're becoming, are even more right together.
So yes, I'm impatient. But it's beautiful to see what is happening here. And when they finally cave in, nothing will tear these two apart.
And I all for it
Nonnie, you are officially my new favorite person because you get it. Our fandom is so busy bitching about a number of topics - Tim Minear's non-answers // "Buck is not really Christopher's dad!1!" // When will EddieA*a be over? What is the point? // Are we being q-worded? etc etc. - that (IMO!) we're not taking the time to appreciate how we ended up here. Did y'all forget Buddie was never set up to be a "will they/won't they" relationship? Did y'all forget that the original plan was (allegedly) to have Eddie and Maddie get together? Did y'all forget that JLH asked to play Chimney's girlfriend instead? Something happened in the early days of filming Ryan and Oliver as Eddie and Buck. Something different. Something good. That much is clear. We make jokes about them having the quickest enemies-to-friends-to lovers plot on television, but am I the only one who wonders if this was done on purpose? Maybe the chemistry between the two was so noticeable that the writers said "No one is gonna believe they hate each other. We might as well make them friends." People loooove arguing about the slow burn of Buddie (some love it, some hate it), but can we please acknowledge how quickly the writers established that these two characters are going to matter to each other for a long time? Eddie's FIRST EPISODE gave us this money quote: "You can have my back any day." "Or, you know, you could...you could have mine." followed by: - Eddie confiding in Buck about having a child ("He's seven." // "And super adorable. I, uh, I love kids.") - Buck telling Eddie when cell service was working because he knew Eddie wanted to talk to Christopher - Buck driving Eddie to pick up Christopher and watching them happily embrace - Eddie and Buck going to the hospital after Abuela got hurt + Pepa talking to Buck, this dude she literally just met, about her nephew's struggles as a single parent - Buck giving Bobby "a heads up" when they were bringing Christopher back to the station so he could clear it with the chief (without telling Eddie) - Buck asking Carla to help Eddie get Christopher what he needs - Eddie having Buck go with him to watch Christopher meet Santa Claus instead of, y'no, his wife... Everything I just mentioned? THE FIRST TEN EPISODES. If the writers *didn't* slow down the trajectory of Buddie's relationship they'd be married with a second kid on the way, but as we now know TM is trying to take advantage of the last two "single" members of 118 by keeping them apart because if/when Buddie is canon he thinks it'll get boring. (That's a YOU problem, Tim! Learn how to write better scripts!) What if the audience really did like Shannon? Where would we be? Does anyone ever think about that? Where would we be if the writers actually cared about making EddieA*a look like a legit couple? Buck sure as hell wouldn't be Christopher's emergency legal guardian right now, I can tell you that much. Don't get so caught up in the destination that you fail to appreciate what it took to get there - especially when we were never supposed to be on this damn road in the first place.

why you can't compare buddie to destiel (from someone who ships both)
this is kind of addressing the recent negativity in the buddie tag, but it's also a collection of my thoughts and reasoning for being buddie-positive despite my experiences with destiel and spn in general. the text of 911 is not really discussed at all, and this is relatively spoiler-free, so if you're thinking of watching 911 I encourage you to read it. if you haven't seen both shows it probably won't make perfect sense, but I wrote this with spn fans who haven't seen 911 in mind, since that's most of my followers (and also seems to be where much of the negativity was coming from) pretty long post under the cut to save your dash
I just want to prepare y'all for the fact that buddie could be the slow burn will they/won't they mlm romance we've been waiting for practically forever.
at this point it's not fair to call it queerbait because where their relationship is now fits the characters and their development. this is not like destiel, where there were many moments over the years that could've ended with them getting together and it would've made sense with the story. buddie right now is in this sweet, wholesome pre-relationship kind of place, which on its own is a compelling dynamic and so fun and good to see. a resolution of it right now would feel out of character—they both still have some development to do before that would feel natural. and so, I don't think we can really call it queerbaiting unless the characters get to that point and there is still no resolution.
also I'd like to point out the overall positivity from the cast when it comes to buddie. both Eddie's and Buck's actors have said (I'm paraphrasing cast statements in this post unless they are in quotations) positive things about the pairing, and Buck's actor has said that he likes the interpretation of Buck as queer, and he would be happy if the writers took his character in that direction. also Eddie's actor with "that's what they all say" when buddie was referred to as a "bromance". Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays Buck's sister (another main character), is very supportive of buddie, saying she's "rooting for it", that it would be "amazing", she doesn't "see how it couldn't happen one day". this was in response to hearing that a fan insists Buck and Eddie will be a couple. She flat-out said "I think so, too." She jokes about buddie with Buck's and Eddie's actors all the time. Also, my favorite bit from the video of her saying all this, "Let's manifest it together!"
It's safe to say this is a VERY different environment to spn. I don't think I've ever seen a cast this positive about a show's main non-canon queer ship before. NEVER. I think it's safe to say that if/when buddie is canonized, the cast will be just as excited as the fans—at least JLH will be! Add into the fact that the show's PR seems to be leaning into bi buck and buddie right now, it's a VERY different vibe than spn had, definitely. There's no gaslighting of the fans here, at least not that I've seen. also, although 911 has a large casual viewership, I think it's safe to say the GA would not be upset by buddie—there are only 3 serious, long-term romantic relationships involving main characters in this show, and one of them is a lesbian marriage with two children. And yes, the characters are shown being lesbians, it's not just a stated fact; the audience is privy to their relationship (and their interactions with their adorable kids). I think it's safe to say that buddie would go over well with the fans, even the casual viewers (of which there are many). buddie doesn't seem to be a huge divider in fandom like destiel is, either. reactions generally seem to be either "I ship it" or "I don't care either way."
Also I'd like to point out that while yes, it's possible that buddie is only bait (which would be disappointing), there's a reason queerbaiting works. people WANT to be queerbaited, because it's nearly indistinguishable from a slow burn will they/won't they queer romance. queerbaiting allows fans to make theories, create fan content (including fic), and keeps them engaged with the dynamic and the show. fans who are vulnerable to queerbaiting want a slow burn will they/won't they queer romance, which is currently an almost completely untapped market. spn could've tapped it, but despite the huge fandom they did not. there are SO MANY people outside of spn fandom who want a slow burn mlm romance, one that keeps the audience guessing, one that's will they/won't they, one that is not guaranteed, and that is why queerbaiting works so well. the audience doesn't just want the payoff, they also want the build-up. the longer the build-up, the higher the payoff, and the suspense of the build-up is gone if you know from the start that the payoff is definitely coming. that's part of why malec from shadowhunters didn't fully tap this market—there was no question of if, only the question of when (which wasn't really a question either, given there was an episode in season 1 literally titled "malec" when they got together.) the characters were always queer, the show being an adaptation of a book series where they were in a relationship and eventually had children together.
this was why November 5th was such a big deal—fans were so far past the will they/won't they aspect of destiel, firmly believing that destiel would always end as a "won't they" and not a "will they" that when cas confessed his romantic love for dean, destiel trended on Twitter over the US election. you all know that story, but maybe not everyone reading this knows that after Nov. 5 there was a case of hundreds if not thousands of spn fans experiencing love sickness because of the confession scene. the payoff of making destiel fully canon (and reciprocated, in English) would've been huge. fans would've been throwing their money at the c/w.
which leads me to the possibility (this is not at all me saying that I think this happened or even is likely, just that it's one possibility that /could/ have happened) that buddie started as bait, that the writers never intended for them to be a couple, but saw fan reactions to buddie during season 2 and started to lean into it in season 3 (and 4 so far, but it just started so I don't want to make any generalized statements about it) possibly still as bait or maybe not deciding yet if they'll go anywhere with it. and then maybe they saw destiel trending on November 5th, realized just how BIG the market for a slow burn will they/won't they mlm romance is, and said "hey, we already have the foundations for one of those. why not go for it and draw in all those viewers who clearly want one so badly?"
if buddie goes canon, because the cast and PR have been so positive about it, unlike spn, and because of the text of the show itself, the show's creatives could VERY EASILY claim that they were never baiting, that it was all an intentional slow burn will they/won't they romance from the beginning, and most people would believe them; there isn't really any evidence to the contrary, although I am sure there would be at least a few fans convinced it started as queerbaiting, and there might not be any evidence to refute that, either.
the point is that 911 is currently sitting on a gold mine. if they play their cards right, and execute buddie well, they will monopolize this market that old straight white men serving as network executives have failed so far to really tap into. they queerbait without the payoff, which gives the show a reputation among those in the market who haven't seen it, guaranteeing they will never watch it. shows in this vein: sherlock (huge reputation for queerbaiting and a finale fans didn't like) and spn (huge reputation for queerbaiting and a finale fans didn't like). spn got so, so close with cas's confession but then continued to gaslight its fans, and PR did not lean into destiel AT ALL. if 911 did buddie? the PR team would be all over it. it would be a moneymaker, big time, and Fox knows it. if buddie, or even just bi buck, went canon, tumblr would be all over it. viewership for the show, which is already impressive, would skyrocket. 911 would monopolize this market, because fans wary of queerbaiting would watch it with the knowledge that the payoff is there, and there really wouldn't be a competitor until other shows saw the success of buddie and followed suit with their own pairings, and given the fact that the market specifically wants /slow burn/ queer romances, that might take a couple years. that puts 911 in a really good position, where suddenly the fandom of the show, not just the GA, is very large and likely very dedicated to the show. the success of canon buddie might just change the landscape of TV in the coming years, showing execs that while queerbaiting does work, actually going through with it is really where the money is. 911 would not just monopolize the market for a while; it would pioneer it.
if buddie never goes canon, I would probably be a bit disappointed at the wasted potential, but unless the characters get to that point where canon buddie seems like the most logical outcome and they /don't/ go for it, I won't be truly upset because I don't think it's fair to claim its queerbaiting until then. I can't tell you how likely it is that buddie will be canon at some point, but it seems FAR more likely than destiel /ever/ did, and we ended up getting cas's confession in the end. I have hope, despite being hurt so badly by spn. 911 is a genuinely great show with some fantastic writing, and they don't leave chekov's gun unfired, unlike spn.
really, it comes down to this: if Jennifer Love Hewitt is allowed to clown for buddie, then so am I, and I'll enjoy this show—which is amazing even without canon buddie—while I apply my clown makeup.

The rest of the fandom seems to be putting in their two cents on the topic so here’s mine:
I was born in 1986 with three older sisters within America’s friendly-to-successful-white-people culture as a white person, so I have by accident, or on purpose, seen almost every thing JLH has been a part of so my two cents might also be worth more (to be clear, I am not saying that other opinions aren’t just as valid, I am saying that, given that I am a film-making geek on top of likely being able to recite the woman’s IMDb page and have looked in to the ins and outs of some of her projects, my insight has the possibility of being more in depth), the following are those insights (I also have listed the ways in which I’m in alignment with all of the opinions that I’ve seen, and how I agree with them, so know that this isn’t an attempt to attack any one on here):
“The Client List” was the series version of a made-for-TV movie (both starred Jen and Cybil Shephard, but all of the character’s names were entirely changed, and other actors were replaced) in which Jen played a woman who separates from her has-been/deadbeat husband (Brian Hallisay, now Jen’s actual husband, being the replacement for the actor from the movie) and takes a job as a massage therapist to support herself and her 2 kids. She falls in to being open to giving certain clientèle happy endings to make more money. The show was notably less risqué because Jen had insisted that her character wear more clothing during the massage scenes and for the happy endings to be completely off-screen (not even alluded to under towels as they had been in the movie as I recall). With one of the show’s main plot points being Riley, Jen’s character, being torn between her husband who was struggling to redeem himself and her husband’s brother whom had always had a crush on Riley and now outshone the former football star in every way as a pillar of the community, the chemistry/actors input levels were not in compliance for what would make good TV, that plus the reduction of the taboo nature of this alternate universe of the same story resulted in the absence of the steam that the movie had, the once-high-in-demand show quickly fell apart, and was cancelled after only two seasons (and it was also a show that just wouldn’t age well with out flipping multiple narratives for obvious reasons).
I have got to be honest, this next example isn’t from my own research (as what little I’ve seen of “Criminal Minds” that I have seen has been only from when it’s been on in my house’s living room at random times), and I’m not sure how I saw this Twitter rant a few months ago, but I did, so here’s what I got from that ... Apparently, the writers offered to write in one of her pregnancies in to the show when she told them that she was pregnant and asked to be written off, but she declined their offer and left the long-running program after being on it for only one season. Now, I, unlike this particular Twitter user who I don’t remember the identity of, don’t begrudge her for not wanting to work long, jet-setting, hours on her feet while creating an other human being inside of her, but that’s me.
Let’s now talk about the show that we all know and love. She was actually strangely, and yet understandably, relieved to know that Brian would once again be coming to work with her to play her character’s husband because, even though the dynamic would be a stark contrast from their home life, she would feel safe with him in those dark scenes.
What am I getting at? One could argue that these are all the behaviours of a grown-up spoiled Hollywood princess, but I could also argue that these are signs of a woman who knows how to get what she wants, and I’ll take it. Yes, she was getting paid to make that video, yes, she knew that it would get out to the public immediately, yes, she knew that she was talking to a queer man, so it wasn’t like there was a high probability that she was going to be overtly anti-Buddie in her message, but I really don’t think, especially seeing that almost every one else associated with the show seemingly agrees with her implication, that she was being disingenuous, and, yes, I also baked for Sterek, and the déjà vu is real, but, as much as she should have, Holland Roden simply did not have the clout that JLH does (no disrespect to either), and Ryan, Brad, and Tim are not the sadists that Jeff Davis revealed himself to be. As I’ve said before, they‘re the ones who gave us a M/M and W/W double wedding on a show that started out as a show about a group of high school misfits in a school glee club, despite, or in light of, that show already being riddled with scandals behind the scenes. “9-1-1” does not have scandals that need distractions to keep the focus on the show itself (not that this was all Klaine and Brittana’s wedding was or that it wouldn’t have happened any way), but we do have that precedent, and us Buddie clowns are a powerful force on the show’s social media.
These are the reasons why I’m actually not too worried even if my worst fear comes true. Not to get too personal, but (*gets vaguely personal*) ... You know the whole broken-home-kid-dreaming-up-fantasy-celebrity-parents thing? Bruce Willis was "my dad" for my entire childhood. It wasn't even a secret. My family and I still make jokes about it. Again, I was born in 1986 in a female body, so Now And Then solidified the definition of ‘friendship’ for me and Striptease had no small role in affirming this non-binary person’s queerness looking back on it. The idea of Rumer Willis’s character, of all people, potentially (just my theory) replacing Hen and being the first woman who Buck blatantly flirts with after getting closure with Abby no longer has the same bite to it that it did when I first thought of it. Some thing about Jen’s demeanor in that video just made me feel like things are still going to be open for possibilities after the finale. That and I just don’t see Aisha (or Tracie) leaving the show any time soon. I need more Henren love on my screen!

What is the one thing that you always look for in a romance book (aside from good plot, that is)? It doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t read the book if it doesn’t have that thing you look for, but you just swoon more if it’s in there. Mine is witty banter between the mains before they fall in love. I LOVE it when it’s established that they’re intellectually equal & can keep up with eachother’s wit, bonus when they interject a flirt somewhere in their banter. Without it, if the book
is well-written, then I’ll like it too, but I definitely prefer a bit of witty flirting in there (one reason why The Ruin of a Rake is my fave in The Turner series)
This is such a good question!!!!!!!!!! I adore some good banter that shows us how the characters feel about each other, or that they even have chemistry. I agree with you on Ruin of a Rake, that banter was absolutely top-notch and I love those two idiots the most :’D (and definitely not because I too am a Julian NUH UH)
I also love giggly sex scenes!!! Like I’m generally so uncomfortable with sex in media and mostly just really bored with sex in books, so whenever a book has a really charming/giggly sex?? That book owns my soul ngl. For example Wanted, a Gentleman or The Love Song of Sawyer Bell. Those have magnificently hilarious sex scenes without them being like a comedy?? Yes that’s what I enjoy.
I also need for the characters to have friends, or alternatively if they’re all alone, I want to know why. I need the characters to have a sense of community and for characters who don’t to be affected by that. So often in mediocre romances the characters dont exist outside of the romance and that’s so so boring. JLH’s or KJ’s books have amazing character communities with friends and families.
And again, I love humor in books. It doesnt have to be a comedy, but I can’t stand books that are 10000000% serious. I like serious books, but please, crack a joke sometimes. Price of Meat is a short story about cannibalism and I still laughed at some great jokes.
Also a thing I love is character crossovers in series with multiple protags. I loooooooove previous protags being a part of the story, aka Hexslayer.
One of my favourite tropes is enemies to lovers, except not in the traditional sense but in an annoyances-to-lovers. The characters cant STAND each other and the other one is SO ANNOYING so WHY DO THEY WANT TO KISS. Think Unnatural Vice or, again, Ruin of a Rake. I still laugh whenever Nathaniel goes “UGH lazarus is SO AWFUL and I HATE HIM and Im SO GAY and I wanna MAKE OUT WITH HIM” or Julian going “Yes I hate Courtenay bcs he’s insufferable and he teases me and also I really really want to make out with him DAMMIT WHY IS HE SO HOT IT’S UNFAIR”
Also charaters actually getting annoyed with how hot the other is is MY JAM YES PLEASE MORE
