🍁 November Outlaw Streams 🍂

Instead of doing a full media rec list this time I’m just going to be streaming double features throughout the month! 💛 We are going to be doing these streams on Zoom. Since I had to pay a subscription fee to make this available to more people I wouldn’t *mind* if a few of ya tossed me a dollar if you attend (not at all required or expected tho!)

All double features will start at 8PM EST, with a pre-show starting about half an hour beforehand.

November 6th - Hitchcock Homos

We will be streaming Rope (1948) and Psycho (1960) - two Hitchcock films featuring queer (coded) villains

Rope is an adaption of a 1929 stage play written by Patrick Hamilton, better known for his work Gaslight, and based upon the real life killing of Bobby Franks by two students in 1924 — though I’ve found nothing about a known relationship between the actual killers. The play explicitly features both main characters as gay, while the film remains a bit more subtextual. The homosexuality is still strikingly present for a film of it’s time, perhaps due in part to the story and screenplay being developed by two gay men, Hume Cronyn and Arthur Laurents, and Brandon being portrayed by gay actor John Dall in the film — perhaps due to it’s adherence to the Motion Picture Production Code, where queer themes remain tragic or villainous. I can’t go without saying how visually stunning this film is. Filmed to mimic the style of the original stage production, we are on one set for the entire duration, viewing the story in real time, with only four visible cuts in the entire runtime. It’s an absolute treat of gay-and-homophobic cinema. /// SUBTITLED

Psycho is the first of many films very loosely based on the crimes of real life grave-robber and killer Ed Gein, who was discovered to crossdress with the victims’ body parts. (Most films based on the events take extensive creative liberties.) While horror had been playing with queer themes for some time, Psycho launched a wave of Geinian gender transgression based horror films, indulging in public fears of transvestites and transsexual women as lurking manipulators and body snatchers in a long enduring conservative moral panic. This paired well with its depiction of dissociative behavior in the killer, capitalizing on transphobic and sanist stereotypes that entwined gender transgression and a fractured sense of self and/or reality. Just as complicated and problematic as Rope, and a classic cinematic delight all the same. /// SUBTITLED

November 13th - Leather Is Everything!

We will be streaming Cruising (1980) and Bloodsisters (1995) — fantasy and reality in the leather community

Cruising my contentious favorite! This film is about a kinky gay murderer picking off other kinky gay men, and an innocent heterosexual Al Pacino going undercover in the leather scene to solve the case. It’s camp. It’s cringe. It’s actually pretty decent. It was picketed by gay activists at the time, so extensively that the dialogue was largely dubbed over due to loud protesting drowning out the production’s audio. It also features gay people in the leather scene, many of them regulars of Mineshaft, who happily joined the cast as extras and background performers. But only the white, muscular ones allowed on screen. It’s a strange erotic fantasy in some ways and - perhaps accidentally - a surprisingly poignant reflection on gay life in others. /// SUBTITLED

Bloodsisters is a documentary surrounding the SM / Leather community in the San Francisco area during the 1990s. It features interviews with a variety of leatherdykes interspersed with footage of needleplay scenes, tit torture, fundraisers, leather titleholder contests, and impactplay demonstrations. It expounds on alternating sides of intra community debate, the reality of death and holding a life in your hands, isolation from the greater lesbian feminist community, roles, love, lust, fisting. And it is so fucking 90’s. /// NO SUBS :(

November 27th - #JustGirlyThings

We’ll be streaming Jawbreaker (1999) and Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) — two modern horror comedies with sapphic overtones

I haven’t seen either of these yet and honestly know very little! I’ve heard the girlies are gay and murderous though and that’s enough for me. /// SUBTITLED

I've only checked a few of these out so far, so I can't make any claims to the quality of all their stories, but just seeing the greater variety of styles, especially the increase in adult couples, in these yuri manga covers compared to 10 years ago, heck even 5 years ago, makes me so happy for how far the genre has come and excited for progress in the future. I'm always on the hunt for more authentic yuri manga, so please let me know if there are any I should read, or which of these I should be checking out first!

@dot524: I loved every bit of this road trip fic. Henry has a crush on Alex and impulsively decides to join him on a road trip to Texas, which turns out to be longer than expected. The delicious yearning, only-one-bed situations, and funny road-trip pit stops made this a great story. I didn’t want to stop reading.

@heybuddy-drabbles: this ticked all my boxes honestly. The pinning, the yearning. The friendship they build while falling in love. And then the love, wild and unstoppable and so free. It was just perfect.

I love you, ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard? by dollarstoreannabethchase (book-verse)

@dot524: A deliciously angsty Henry POV of key events in the book - lake house & storming of Kensington Palace. Broke my heart and put it back together again. The description of his depression and pain made me want to give Henry a hug.

@suseagull04: Enemies to lovers meets Christmas feels and found family. The establishment of every relationship, both romantic and platonic, in this fic is fantastic too!

@dot524: What a delightful ride! I loved the unique reality-show setup and the roommates/best friends to lovers pining from Henry’s POV. It had a few fun plot turns that kept me guessing and many scenes that made me grin like an idiot (e.g. a cake-baking contest and partner yoga with someone else). This isn’t exactly an undiscovered gem based on the number of comments and kudos — but I hadn’t read it, so I wanted to spread the word for those new to the fandom!

@thesleepyskipper: In this AU where Henry is still the Prince but Alex is a civil rights lawyer who works with Pez, the author has given us an incredible meet cute!! Alex pulls an Alex and shoots his shot for a selfie that turns out pretty well for him in the end. 😏 The author’s writing of Alex here is absolutely spot on AND hilarious. I still can’t believe this is their first published fic!!!

@zwiazdziarka: this fic has everything one could ask for: it's funny, it's cute, it's awkward, it's hot and addictive. I can't stop thinking about this version of Alex and Henry and their characterisation is absolutely perfect!

Made For Love by @candyspandemonium (book-verse)

@zwiazdziarka: AU where Henry and June are ice dancing champions and Alex has a lot of feelings about some guy stealing his sister. There are just so many good things in this fic - emotions, Alex being totally unhinged and not realising what it means, Henry as perfect fantasy, dealing with media and public opinion - and all that in nice scenery of ice rinks. Can't recommend it enough!

(Secret) Santa Baby by @indomitable-love (book-verse)

@dot524: Such a sweet AU about office romance between Alex and Henry and how a Secret Santa gift & being paired together on a project leads to something more. Heartwarming and made me smile… this writer’s characterization of Alex & Henry is always spot-on for me, no matter the universe.

@suseagull04: The world-building in this fic is phenomenal! It's the perfect blend of magical realms and the real world, mystery and magic AU, and I love it!

@zwiazdziarka: actors AU, but also Henry is Alex's biggest fan and his awkward celebrity crush adds all new flavour to their relationship once they meet. The range of emotions fit in this story is truely amazing. There's so much tension and every moment feels like the one where it all can turn into a dissaster or something absolutely wonderful.

One thing I haven’t seen much (or maybe at all?) in @ds30below is fanart recs! I get it, it's hard: I’ve tried compiling some themed art rec lists for the fest, but there are just too many wonderful things out there! So I thought I’d list some ways to find dS art at all, old and new, for the History week. Sadly, a lot of our fandom’s earlier art history is scattered all over barely functional old websites, if not lost completely. DeviantArt’s search has gone crazy - I can’t find the old dS stuff there anymore. A lot of the older (and even not that old) works on AO3 have broken image links, because image hosting has always been a big problem for fan artists (but not anymore: now there's https://images.squidge.org/). 

That said, where to find due South fanart?

Those old personal sites - if you can find them AND if the images aren't broken. Here’s an archived one where at least the wallpaper section still works (Nicci's art is F/K and some are NSFW).

Please, if you know other old or archived sites like this where the images still work, post about them!

The media files for the dS zines on Fanlore are a treasure trove, because there's a gallery view - check especially the files for slash zines, that image gallery has two pages.

Of course, the “Art” tag on AO3 has plenty of treasures (direct link below). I confess I haven’t probably looked through all of them myself yet! I recommend starting from the last page so there’s more new-to-you stuff unless you’ve been in the fandom for ten years or more. Don’t be disheartened by the broken image links, there are so many that do actually work.

Check out my sideblog, Due South Fanart Appreciation - there's also some older stuff there if you browse further. If you use Tumblr on a browser, the Archive is a nifty way to get a kind of a gallery view of the blog, though it only shows the first image in each post and does a disservice to artists with multipart works. The browser version also allows you to use the Tag list - it takes a while to load, but if you have a favorite artist/character/ship, you can find the relevant posts easily). 

I hope you enjoy the stuff you find in the above links - and if you find something you love, save the images, they might be gone tomorrow!

Jun Robles Lana — a non linear narrative focused on a trans person? all my faves fit this bill so i’m looking forward to seeing this one for the first time along with yall. it is a series of vignettes as eulogy for the main character, Trisha — a trans woman who’s last wish is that she be made up as different celebrities for each night of her wake.

Farha (2021) dir. Darin J. Sallam — a recent release based on the harrowing experiences of a real Palestinian family during the beginning of the Nakba in 1948. (This is currently being review bombed super hard by petty zionists so I highly recommend watching and reviewing)

closing my inbox/taking a break

due to increasing anon hate and some very gross and concerning asks, i've decided that i'm going to be closing my inbox and taking a break from tumblr for a little while. i can only put up with so much and it's getting to be too much when my askbox looks like this after a few days:

i understand that i have some very lovely anons that i adore talking to. i'm very sorry that other people had to ruin this for those anons and if turning off my askbox will keep you from interacting, but i need to do this for my peace of mind for the time being. that's not to say i'll never open it again, i just need a break and hopefully some time will let people calm down.

posts will still be the same, everything i have coming up is either queued or scheduled for the next week. the may fic recs will be posted this afternoon. i've cleared out my inbox and queued replies to what's already in there outside of request asks.

i mentioned a little "extra" post for tomorrow that was going to be a post of mid-year faves, for all the fics i've found too late for a monthly rec list and ones that i just really love that was meant to post tomorrow, but i'm going to postpone that for now and come back to it at a later day this month.

the next mob!price chapter is scheduled for next friday, june 9th, in the evening and set to be reblogged again saturday morning. i'll probably pop back on for that and to make sure the taglist works properly, and reevaluate my askbox at that time.

i am so thankful to all of the kind anons i've gotten and for everyone who's been nice to and patient with me. i have an appreciation for all of you that i can't put into words.

and to the anons who've sent me hateful, racist, misogynistic, and down right threatening messages, i know this is social media, and it's just tumblr, but there are real people behind these blogs with real feelings and i hope no one ever sends you the same kind of hatred and vitriol that you've sent me.

Charles was good at driving. He was good at fashion. He was good at piano. He was good with his hands (he had been told).

He was not good at drawing. And it was eating him alive.

He won't admit it was eating him alive, of course. No one is a better martyr than Charles - he would rather shut up forever than be a tiny inconvience to the world.

He has loved art as long as he can remember. He spend his youth in museums - captivated. Classes in which he was supposed to be paying attention - well, those were his drawing hours. He would try - and fail - to capture the frailness of a fallen leaf, or the whiskers of his cat, or the smile on his father's face.

He had no talent for it. There's no point in doing something if you can't be good at it.

So - he stopped drawing.

He had plenty of other things that kept him occupied - he honestly forgot about his childhood dream of becoming an artist. Until his brother showed him - "Charlie," he laughed, shoving the artwork in his face. "I think it's supposed to be a cat?" The drawing was unrecognisable, but it was recognisabily his. He laughed. Because yeah, he really couldn't draw.

It wasn't until he was laying in a hotel bed, that it hit him. He had loved drawing. He wished he could draw. It wouldn't be worth it. He sighed.

Max nudged his shoulder. "What's up?" His lover, his world, was laying next to him, scrolling on his phone. It had been a tough day - media day sucks ass without having to hide your relationship with the man sitting next to you. It sucked even more ass now.

"I wish I could draw." It was the pure, honest truth. Max looked at him as if he had something on his face. "Why... can't you?" His eyes were questioning, but soft.

"Because I'm not good at it."

Max' eyes softened up even more - if that was possible. God, what he had done to deserve such softness he would never know. Maybe he paid for it every race (he didn't care). Charles found it overwhelming sometimes.

"Charles, you don't have to be good at it."

Oh, he thought. "Oh," he said. He was dumbfounded. He tried to search through his mental lexicon for a proper response, but, as usual, language would fail him.

He had genuinely never considered that he could do things he enjoyed without being good at it. He bit his cheek, deep in thought. "What's the point of it then?"

Max smiled at him, eyes crinkling. "You enjoy it," he supplied, simply. Charles made a considering sound, as Max cupped his cheek, making the Monegasque look up at him.

"Charles, I mean it," Charles tried to look anywhere else. "Look at me, my love," and yeah Charles' cheeks still burned at that - who cares, "please, if it makes you happy, please draw. Draw something, for me?"

A week later, Max received his monthly love letter (Charles was a sap, after all). In it was a drawing of their cat. It wasn't good, it was mediocre at best. And it was Max' favorite drawing in the world.
