Long Story Short : Softaware, Steve Hadfield, Matt Evans, Monochrome Echo
I thought I was done with these Long Story Short pieces for the year, but man, the music just isn’t stopping. There’s been some albums I haven’t gotten a chance to dig into until recently so I’m going to throw a couple more albums your way before the clock runs out on 2022. I hate the thought of not mentioning some amazing music to put into your ears, and these below are most definitely…

Evelyn awakens
Lunter au where Belos stabs Hunter:
"HUNTER!" Luz was screaming even before her brain fully realized what happened. Before he fell into her arms, before her hands were stained with his blood. She just instinctively knew what Belos was going to do by that look on his monstrous face. Hunter's skin was completely pale white, and his eyes wide both in pain and (what has her tearing up) relief.
He had jumped in front of her, and took the incoming gloop fist. He had known what Belos was going to do too. Was utterly happy that he could save her. Now he was in laying in her arms, with a bleeding wound. Hunter was implied, Hunter was implied! Implied! Like a broken record from her fathers old collection, that one word repeats in her head as her hands stained red.
"NO! No no no no, H-Hunter yo-yo-u." She couldn't finish what she was saying she was hiccuping and tearing up. Her breath coming out panicked and short. As if she was the one dying instead.. Hunter just smiles up at her in comfort. He is bleeding out, a hole through his chest! She screams again in her head.
And he's trying to comfort her. He shows his gap tooth smile at her, teeth stained with blood "Hey it's alright. Little light, it's ok." Hunter coughs and a bubble of blood comes gurgling out. This just makes Luz cry even harder. Hunter painfully smiles up at her. One of his hands shaking, reaches to cup her cheek. She grasps his hand tight in comfort and kisses his palm. Tear stained cheek touches ruff scar covered hand. Hunters thumb wipes them away.
Luz kneels with Hunter's head cushioned on her thighs. His white cape spread out underneath him like fallen wings. Quickly being stained with fresh blood fallen wings. She ignores everything else around her. The battle flashes of magic, Amity calling out to her. Belos, a few feet in front of her probably monologing like the crazy psycho he is.
All she can focus on is Hunter. She grips his cold hand in hers desperately, eyes helpless. Hunter with a wheeze continues speaking, "You know I don't regret it. Not one bit. And it's not your fault either. I'm a grimwalker Luz. Belos just makes us to kill us. You know that." Luz shakes her head in denial, "N-no. Your worth more than that."
Hunters magenta eyes are starting to get unfocused but he keeps staring up at Luz. "At least I could keep you safe. At least my life ment something."
"Your life always ment something. You were alway deserving of happiness. I should have been the one to save you!" Luz doesn't know what to at do. She grips Hunters hand tight to her cheek, "Please! Tell what I can do, I can fix this right? There must be a glyph or something!" Luz is panicking and in denial. Hunter just continues smiling, his eyes start to flutter shut. Faintly with his last breath, "Luz, you alwasy made me feel like I was worth more, more than what everyone else wanted me to be."
The world ends, the unspeakable happens, Hunter goes lax and lifeless in Luzs arms. His breathing stops and his eyes fully close. Blood stains a trail out of his mouth. Luz stares stunned and in disbelief at this. "Hunter! Hunter! Wake up Hunter! HUNTER! WAKE UP HUNTER!," begs Luz in panic. Her sobs turn into howls. Heartbroken wild howls. Something inside of Luz breaks and shatters. Thousands of shards breaking and piercing her heart. She holds Hunters form close and lets out wails and screams.
Everyone else freezes and stops fighting at the howls and screams. Unbeknownst to Luz the earing belonging to Evelyn Clawthorne starts glowing. Like a light glyph, the moon pendant earing glows. On Hunters form his sun earing stars glowing as well. Soon the light glyph glow spreads out to cover Luz and Hunter whole and blinds everyone to them. Luz in the middle of that glowing hears someone singing softly. Like a lullaby trying to comfort someone from a nightmare.
Deep in my soul
Love so strong
It takes control
Now we both know
The secrets bared
The feelings show
Driven far apart
I'll make a wish, on a shooting star.
Luz has never heard the song or voice before. But its comforting somehow. In a strange trance, she starts singing with the voice. Singing to Hunter with that voice. Till both their voices become one.
There will come a day
Somewhere far away
In your arms I'll stay
My only love
Even though you're gone
Love will still live on
The feeling is so strong
My only love
My only love
The light changes Luz, and in her places isn't Luz anymore but someone else, Evelyn Clawthorne. Evelyn with dazed eyes, and dry tears keep singing. The song becoming a chant, a spell to save someone.
You've reached the deepest part
Of the secret in my heart
I've known it from the start
My only love
Amity moves to go to Luz, to do what she doesn't know. A hand stops her, it's Eda watching with a sad yet amazed look. Amity angry yells,"we need to help her!" Eda finally looks to Amity with a serious look. " We can't help her. Thats a powerful spell chant, bard magic. We interrupt the chant in any way we could all suffer from the backlash. Luz, Evelyn. Whoever she is right now. Needs to finsih the chant."
All the while Evelyn keeps chanting. The more she chants, the more Hunter glows. His wounds start healing, the blood disappears, Hunter starts brbreathing again. His slow heart beat that was about to die starts up again.
You've reached the deepest part
Of the secret in my heart
I've known it from the start
My only love
My only loves
Soon at the end of her song, a flash happens. Evelyn disappears, in her place is Luz. Hunter is breathing again. Faint but alive. Luz in relief and exhaustion passes out, fainting on his form. Her head landing weakly on his chest, his heartbeat a safehaven that luls her to sleep.
Belos watches what happens with a confused look, which soon turns to horrible anger. "That song! No Evelyn! I wont let you take him from me again!" Belos in another fit of rage goes to stab the two again. A wall of thorns a goo stops the violent hit. Willow andAmity together protect them. "Eda!"cries Amity, "take them an go!" The two girls are having difficulty holding up the wall from the continuing angry gloop hits.
Eda shakes herself from her awe look. "Right, ok kiddos time to go!" Eda transforms into Harpy Eda. Gently picking up the two teens, she soon flies away with them in her arms. King clinging to her shoulders.
King scared, looks at the two passed out teens. He has no idea what happens. But whatever it is, he's greatful for it. Nervous and scared, King asks Eda hoping for the answers, that everything will be alright, " Eda, will they be ok?"
Eda doesn't look at the asleep in her arms. Focusing on flying away from the battle, but she holds them tight and secure. Their earings faintly glow unbeknownst to them.
Eda to King, eyes to the sky, searching for home, the owl house, "I don't know King, I really don't know." Eda thinks of Bard songs and family secrets. Evelyn song repeats in her head. "I really don't know kid."

Tape Tuesday: Parker Sprout (fka Velvet Davenport) Returns With New Moon Glyph-Released 'Milk the Sun'
Tape Tuesday: Parker Sprout (fka Velvet Davenport) Returns With New Moon Glyph-Released ‘Milk the Sun’
Velvet Davenport, the project of Parker Sprout, was one of my favorites of the early era of Moon Glyph records. The trippy, pastoral psychedelica had a warm, early Pink Floyd vibe that seemed to cross generations through a kaleidoscope lens. His music was a mix of youthful optimism and old-soul vibes, but he vanished from my radar almost ten years ago. In welcome news, earlier this year his…

Window Shopping with The Garment District: An Interview with Jennifer Baron (interview by Eric Eggleson)
If you’re a Ladybug Transistor fan like I am, then the name Jennifer Baron should sound familiar. She has been a part of it since the beginning. But what I didn’t know was that she has another musical outlet with her amazing band The Garment District. Thankfully, Gary Olson(see previous Dagger interview) told me about her new album. I had a chance to catch up with her and find out more.
Here’s the opening track from The Garment District’s new album:
youtube
What do you think of the current music scene? Any new bands we should know about? Some newer and newish contemporary music that is frequently on my turntable and in my ears: Surface to Air Missive, Carl Didur, Zacht Automaat, The Frowning Clouds, Traffik Island, ORB, Locate S,1, Gloria, Etran de L’Air, Paint, Large Plants, Euros Childs, Emma Anderson, Heather Trost, flypaper, Colored Lights, Cindy Lee, Brigid Dawson & The Mothers Network, The Murlocs, Cindy, Jacco Gardner, Tim Presley, The Cromagnon Band, Licorice Root Orchestra, Bong Wish, The Orange Alabaster Mushroom, Cut Worms, Hot Apple Band, Liam Hayes, Belbury Poly, Samantha Glass, Jackie McDowell, Chris Cohen, Golden Apples, Cory Hanson, The David Tattersall Group, Mike Donovan …
What is your musical background? Do you have any musical training? I create music as The Garment District and am also a founding member of Brooklyn’s The Ladybug Transistor (Merge Records). As The Garment District, I write and arrange the music, play multiple instruments, and write the lyrics. When I was in elementary school, I took piano lessons from a woman who lived on our street, and I still have some of my Leila Fletcher Piano Course Books. I dabbled in guitar lessons in Amherst, Massachusetts, while attending Mount Holyoke College and was also a DJ at WHMC 91.5 FM South Hadley, one of the oldest broadcasting facilities in the U.S. run by women. Really, I learned to play music in a self-taught experiential way, like the musicians I admire most, by starting a band. For me that was in Brooklyn, playing guitar in Saturnine. Soon after, I helped form The Ladybug Transistor, quickly learning to play bass for our tour with Sportsguitar in Switzerland, which flipped a musical switch to permanently be on in my psyche and life. As The Garment District, I have previously released albums on Night-People Records and Kendra Steiner Editions, as well as a single for La Station Radar (France) that features a remix of my song “Nature-Nurture” by Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, Spectrum, E.A.R.). I have also contributed songs to compilations on Moon Glyph, Crash Symbols, Crafted Sounds and Kill Collector Culture. I’m ecstatic to have my brand-new full-length album, Flowers Telegraphed to All Parts of the World, released on Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records after knowing Mike Turner through Athens, Georgia, and Elephant 6 bands, for many years. It has been such a meaningful way to reconnect, and a deep honor to be label mates with The Primitives, The Wedding Present, Great Lakes, Fred Schneider, Outer World, Swansea Sound, Katie Lass, and many others. It was a dream come true to have the expertise of Warren Defever (His Name Is Alive) oversee the vinyl production and cut the lacquers for the new LP at Third Man Pressing in Detroit. I also love having opportunities to merge music with other art forms I am passionate about, especially film and video, which I have been invited to do through the Pittsburgh-based SYNC'D series. For both in-person and online events, I composed original soundtracks (ranging from 1-5 minutes) for the series, which pairs filmmakers and video artists with musicians for live shows and online broadcasts. My music has also been featured on the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's Pitt Med Podcast, and I contributed music and photography to Brooklyn-based ESOPUS magazine. In the art realm, I have also contributed an audio installation, a cassette tape and photography for group exhibitions curated by designer Brett Yasko at SPACE Gallery in Pittsburgh. In Spring 2023, I was invited to create a special DJ set for the opening celebration of “The Velvet Underground & Nico: Scepter Studio Sessions” exhibition at The Andy Warhol Museum and play my grandparents’ collection of tamburitza 78s at the Maxo Vanka Murals Community Block Party in Millvale, PA.

List all of the instruments you play. With The Garment District, I play keyboards live (Wurlitzer electric piano, synthesizer, melodica). On the new album, Flowers Telegraphed to All Parts of the World, I play a variety of organs and synthesizers, electric piano, guitar on several songs, bass on some songs, melodica, glockenspiel and percussion, and sing backing vocals throughout. With The Ladybug Transistor, I play bass, guitar, keyboards, and melodica live.
What instrument do you begin writing songs with? (guitar, piano, etc.). I write music and make demos at home typically using my Roland JX-3P synthesizer, Hohner organ, Rickenbacker 360, and Hammond M3 organ. I love the raw somewhat warbled vibe of demos and the sensation that the construct of a song is amorphous or precariously trying to hold itself together as it emerges, and the way demos can reflect the creative process. Whether I make demos using my Boss digital 8-track recorder or iPhone, I try my best to save them (I’ve even been revisiting and digitizing old Ladybug Transistor and Frock 4-track sessions!). Most of the songs on the new Garment District album emerged as demos I recorded at home, playing the core keyboard parts, and mapping out song structures, vocal melodies, lyrics and ideas for instrumentation and arrangements. I love having analog instruments around the house to encourage a spontaneous writing process, inspired by where an instrument takes you as much as by lighting, ambient sounds, time of day, seasons, and shifting vantage points. Many are incorporated into the new album: Vox Super Continental organ, Wurlitzer electric piano, Hammond M3, vintage Casios, Fender Vibrolux Reverb amp, Rickenbacker 360, and melodica. Adding to these, I was fortunate to be able to incorporate a range of analog synthesizers on loan that I consider to be the holy grail in terms of the golden age of the analog synthesizer universe, like a 1970s Roland 505 Paraphonic, Roland System 100, Farfisa Syntorchestra, and a Sequential Pro One, plus 1960s and 1970s guitar pedals I borrowed from Gregg Kostelich of the garage rock band, The Cynics.
I love both experiences of creating intimate, experimental and spontaneous demos at home, and then seeing how they evolve into a permanent piece of recorded sound within the studio setting. I am especially motivated by layered melodies that come to me when experimenting with instruments, making demos, and working in the recording studio. To me, there is a kind of alchemy inherent in the art form of music, that can emerge when a song takes an unexpected direction, but remains true to its core, such as being anchored by a melody, an instrument, a rhythm or an arrangement. I am drawn to the duality of producing and arranging music, but also being open to letting the creative process itself, and the limitations or potential of instruments, guide your vision -- not always being totally in control of the final result because it’s being created in a very particular context, time, and place. A central, guiding inspiration for me comes from nature, swimming, and observing the world around me through photography.

In Pittsburgh, I also played organ and percussion with The New Alcindors, with whom I recorded an album at the legendary Castle Recording Studios in Nashville. My current bands are The Garment District and The Ladybug Transistor.
Do you have a day job? Yes. I work as a writer and an editor, and I also am a writing tutor for teens. My professional experience includes working in art museums and co-running arts and community events.

When did you realize how important music was in your life? Music surrounded us from our earliest days. My mom would sing Peter, Paul and Mary's "Stewball" (she went on to name her first dog after the song and he was the most loving majestic creature) to us as one of our lullabies. Growing up, our house was filled with LPs, CDs and radios, and our car had a tape deck for our many road trips to see our relatives in Philadelphia and at the beach in New Jersey (where my brother Jeff and I were born). Our parents’ record collection supplied some of our very first and favorite toys, so we were fortunate to have a private listening library to explore. So many memories of gazing at fantastical album covers: The Beach Boys, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Donovan, Leonard Cohen, The Byrds. My mom taught a high school English course called “Poetry & Rock Lyrics” and I loved writing song lyrics out on index cards used to decorate her classroom.
Our home contained mind-blowing concert posters by legendary Fillmore West artist Bonnie MacLean, including a hypnotic Pink Floyd poster. Our mom grew up in Philadelphia with Bonnie’s sister Valerie and told us stories about Fillmore posters and postcards arriving at their Penn State dorm room. We also had the lyrics to Dylan’s “Sad-eyed Lady of the Lowlands” written out in calligraphy and framed hanging in our house, so that gives you an idea of the backdrop that led to having music of the 1960s and 1970s in our DNA. Watching shows like “H.R. Pufnstuf” (RIP Marty Krofft) and “The Electric Company” and singing along to “Free To Be … You And Me” and “Puff, the Magic Dragon” cemented the power and value of music in our lives and definitely planted the seeds for the kind of music I make along with a particular creative aesthetic and cultural mindset. As kids, my brother and I would make up our own radio shows, playing the parts of DJs and performing commercial spots, recording them onto Maxell tapes. Our first records bought for us by my mom were songs like “The Muffin Man,” which fueled my interest in offbeat folk music and melodies. As a family, we have attended many concerts together over the years: Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Richard Thompson, Bert Jansch, Bruce Springsteen, The Replacements -- and it is a special bond to share with your parents. I think that empowered and inspired us to see many seminal concerts as teenagers at storied Pittsburgh venues like the Syria Mosque, Electric Banana (all-ages nights), Graffiti, Sonic Temple, Civic Arena, the Beehive and more.
Riding the T Downtown to shop at the iconic record store Eide’s for albums by New Order, The Smiths, the Go-Betweens and on and on, was a rite of passage and a teenage pilgrimage in a pre-digital era where gathering in public spaces to share the thrill of discovering new music was transformative. My deep love of music in a vast array of style and genres is something I do not separate from any aspect of my life or my identity. I have always been fascinated and moved by music because it is an art form that you cannot see or touch, yet it can transport you so powerfully through places and times and thoughts and feelings. It is both time-based but also beyond time, both fleeting and permanent, if that makes sense.
Tumblr media
The Ladybug Transistor live at the Andy Warhol Museum in 2023.
What artists have influenced you? On any day, I am listening to a vast range of music: 1950s-1970s psychedelia, pop, garage, freakbeat, and folk-rock; 1950s-1960s rocksteady and ska; early electronic; free jazz; 1980s hip hop; 1970s-80s pop and new wave from the U.K., Scotland, New Zealand, and Australia; soundtracks … I am deeply inspired by creative mediums beyond music: film, design, photography, material culture, especially from the 1960s-1970s. Film is extremely inspiring to me, especially 1970s filmmaking, British folk and Italian giallo. I am also very drawn to instrumental and interstitial music because it allows listeners to access visceral worlds through non-verbal communication. From Library Music to free jazz to Jamaican Rocksteady to early electronic music to albums by Yellow Magic Orchestra, Les Rallizes Dénudés, Manuel Göttsching, Delia Derbyshire, Jack Nitzsche, Hailu Mergia, Alice Coltrane, Harmonia, Broadcast and the Focus Group, and so much more.
If you could work with any other artist (dead or alive), who would it be? Lee Hazlewood, Yoko Ono, Peter Weir, Alice Coltrane, Remy Charlip.
What was the first CD/record you ever bought? Among the first albums we bought (literally the very first were the brightly colored plastic records for our Fisher Price Record Player my mom bought for us) were compilations of hits and novelty songs from the 1950s-1970s. I have such vivid memories of singing along to songs like The Coasters’ “Yakety Yak” (1958), Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs “Li’l Red Riding Hood” (1966) and Napoleon XIV’s “They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!” The combination of catchy melodies, interesting arrangements and evocative narrative imagery certainly sparked our childhood curiosity and imagination.
What was the first concert you ever went to? Peter, Paul and Mary with my mom at The Stanley Theatre in downtown Pittsburgh.
Who plays on your latest album?  Where did you find them? Family and friends (new and old) and members of The Garment District live band are featured on the new album. One extremely rewarding aspect of recording the new album was working with my cousin Lucy Blehar, who is a vocalist. I have always been drawn to the concept of family bands (I play in The Ladybug Transistor with my brother Jeff) and what can arise between relatives who collaborate on creative endeavors. For the two of us, we are able to sing backups and harmonies and double certain melody lines together. We share a very close bond personally, so the recording process was a very organic and fulfilling way of enjoying the studio environment together. This continues my family’s music-making heritage, as our grandfather, great-aunt and great-uncles on my dad’s side performed in Croatian tamburitza orchestra family bands in the Monongahela Valley towns Braddock and Rankin, and in Benwood, West Virginia, often for boarders who worked in area steel mills. To have Shivika Asthana (Papas Fritas) play drums on several songs on the new album is deeply special to me and to the identity of the drum sound. Our bands played shows together in the past, including at The Knitting Factory in NYC. It has been a tremendous joy to reconnect through music and the indie craft scene now that we both live in Pittsburgh. Another meaningful thread on the new album that also connects several dots, is one of the drum kits we used – a beautiful sounding 1966 Slingerland belonging to Laura Rogers (our bands, Saturnine and Ruby Falls, also played shows together in NYC and I am close with Laura’s sister and former bandmate Jennifer, who also lives right near me in Pittsburgh!). Though its provenance has not been confirmed, Laura was told that the kit, which she bought from a collector in Detroit, was used on the Nirvana “Unplugged” recordings. I love that our lives have intersected in these ways. It is also incredibly special to me that the new album features horns by my Ladybug bandmate and close friend Gary Olson on trumpet as well as Ladybugger Kyle Forester (whose solo band we just played with in Brooklyn in November) on saxophone. So, Flowers Telegraphed to All Parts of the World brings together people I adore deeply, whose gifts and energy helped the music come to life, including Dan Koshute (guitar, vocals), Corry Drake (bass), Sean Finn (drums), Shivika Asthana (drums), Alex Korshin (vocals), Nathan Musser (violin, cello) and David Klug (drums). And my constant close listener: my husband Greg Langel.
Tumblr media
Who is in your backup band when you tour? The current Garment District live band features Corry Drake (bass), Mike Kelly (guitar), Sean Finn (drums), Alex Korshin (vocals), and Erik Cirelli (guitar). We just performed in December for the new SYNC’D Presents series at one of my favorite Pittsburgh venues, Spirit. The event included an incredible liquid light show accompanying the music in real-time created by Billy Gruber, who runs SOS Lightshow in Dayton, Ohio. On January 28, we are thrilled to be opening for William Tyler & The Impossible Truth at Bottlerocket Social Hall. Past live show highlights for The Garment District include performing at the VIA Music & New Media Festival, The Andy Warhol Museum Sound Series and Silver Studio Sessions; Ladyfest, Deutschtown Music Festival; and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Music SPACE series; opening for Parquet Courts, Julia Holter, Soft Moon, A. Savage, Jack Cooper, The Essex Green, Jenny Hval and Mr. Airplane Man; performing at the Carrie Blast Furnaces National Historic Landmark for the THRIVAL Festival; playing in an abandoned 1900s-era Czech Church on the Allegheny River for the SYNC’D series; and filming a live video segment at the Mattress Factory museum (where I used to work) for Doug Aitken’s Station to Station project.
Where can people find your music? The vinyl and digital LP is available from Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records. The LP is also available in shops, with U.S. distribution through Midheaven Mailorder / Revolver.  https://www.hhbtm.com/product/flowers-telegraphed-to-all-parts-of-the-world/
Distribution for the new LP overseas is through: UK: Plastichead     Germany, Austria, Switzerland: Cargo     Border Music: Scandinavia     Goodfellas: Italy     Australia/New Zealand: Planet MGM/Groove Merchants     Benelux: Suburban   All of my current and past releases are available digitally through Bandcamp. My music is also available for listening on all streaming platforms (please support independent musicians when you can!)

Video still of Jennifer by Sandy Loaf.
Are CD releases a thing of the past? Not in my particular world. Based on the number of people who purchased (or requested) CDs on our Ladybug Transistor tour in November, I would say no. I still have most of my CDs from the 1990s and we often listen to them on car trips. A few years ago, I actually released a CD of all-instrumental solo music, “Luminous Toxin,” via Kendra Steiner Editions, the Texas-based experimental label run by acclaimed writer Bill Shute.

How was the concert in Norway? (Egersund Visefestival) Absolutely dreamy! After having the magical experience of performing at the Egersund Visefestival in 2019 (where we joined Elf Power, Robyn Hitchcock, Emma Swift, The Essex Green, I Was a King and others), we were invited to return to the sublime southwestern coast of Norway for this past summer’s festival. It was especially fulfilling after the frightening pandemic years. In July, we performed at the festival along with Teenage Fanclub, Elf Power, The Minus 5, The No Ones, Colored Lights, The High Water Marks, Euros Childs, Honey Radar, The Rishis, and more. It was also the international premiere of the new Elephant 6 documentary, so there was a screening and panel discussion (that my brother Jeff participated in with Hilarie Sidney and Andrew Rieger). A blissful experience and also a total whirlwind of activity, including marathon rehearsals in a historic Norwegian house, sneaking in crisp lake swims, and not sleeping much during the midnight sun! One of many highlights was getting to play melodica (me) and flute (Sasha) with Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey during The No Ones' closing set.  Since we had our November 9 show at The Andy Warhol Museum scheduled well in advance, we decided to book a Fall mini-tour for November 2023. It was truly a dream to be back on stage and in the van  (aka a massive sprinter!) with Gary, Sasha, Julia, my brother Jeff, plus Derek Almstead on drums and Ake Strömer (of the incredible Strömer Mutroniks) helping us with driving and merchandise sales. The shows at Public Records in Brooklyn and The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh were particularly moving and thrilling, with sooo many old and new friends (we missed you, Tim!) and family members in attendance. It was fantastic to be back at Schuba’s again in Chicago and see Eric and his daughter. One unexpected highlight was discovering how incredible the Bell’s Brewery venue and facility are in Kalamazoo! We hope to be back on tour again in 2024.

Tell us about your involvement with the Elephant 6 film? I contributed some archival footage that is used in the documentary, from our extensive late 1990s U.S. tours with Of Montreal. The digitizing continues! I also participated in post-screening Q&As with Derek Almstead when the film premiered in Pittsburgh at The Harris Theater in September 2023.
Will you be touring your new album? I absolutely hope to soon, and would love to see Dagger readers out there along the way. The Garment District has only played locally so I look forward to more shows and some touring. Stay tuned please and stay in touch!
What are your future plans? It has been a true joy to rebuild the live band after overwhelming pandemic interruptions. I look forward to performing more regularly and celebrating the new LP. I plan to continue my cross-country collaborations with artist Nicole Czapinksi, who created the music video for “Left on Coast” (filmed at an abandoned Nike Missile Site in Western Pennsylvania). Nicole would love to project live visuals, responding to our music in real-time using techniques we experimented with in the video. Likewise, I expect to continue collaborating with Asheville, North Carolina-based artist Peter Speer, who I have known since our shared NYC days, who created the music video for “Following Me,” our cover of the 1967 song by The Human Expression. I have started conversations with Pittsburgh artists Johnny Arlett, Michi Tapes and Sandy Loaf about working on new music videos for The Garment District. This winter, I will be contributing a track to a compilation planned for 6612 Tapes, the label run by Elephant 6 co-founder Hilarie Sidney (The High Water Marks, The Apples in Stereo), with all proceeds going to a blue candidate in a vulnerable state during the 2024 U.S. election. I have some new Garment District demos emerging and hope to be back in the studio soon!
I hope you enjoyed learning more about Jennifer as much as I did. We can only hope she will bring her band out on the road in the future. It was such a fun time seeing The Ladybug Transistor in Chicago. Here’s hoping a new year will bring a new tour.

Old Friends (Hunter/The Golden Guard x reader)
Part two to Strange Things in Eclipse Lake
Word count: 4.5k
Trigger warnings: Blood, abuse, Hunter harm (sorry)
*******
Hunter and I sat outside the palace, laughing about something or another. It had been a long time since we hung out , especially now that Hunter was training for something he said was ‘clandestiene’, but we were always able to pick up right where we left off. This time, we were in the midst of a wonderful prank session.
“D’you think Lilith has noticed yet?” I grinned, clicking the fire wand from the human world.
Hunter laughed. “How could she not? It’s all over her hair! You think she’ll be okay?”
I snorted. “My aunt is so icy that she actually probably snuffed it out without even realizing. She’ll be fine.”
“(Y/N)! YOU BRAT! DID EDALYN GIVE YOU SOME SORT OF- SOME SORT OF FIRE POTION?!”
I froze. “Actually….that’s our cue to leave.”
“Oh, well I know a perfect hiding spot.” Hunter grabbed my hand and we bolted out, evading my furious aunt.
We reached an ominous set of double doors. I tried not to shiver….something about those doors felt…off.
“My uncle does this all the time- it should just take a simple spell, something supposedly beginner level? Basically, it’ll unlock it.”
I nodded and gripped his hand tighter.
“Oh comeoncomeoncomeoncomeon-” He mumbled, trying to finish the spell to open the door.
“Hunter, let’s find another option!” I pleaded. Lilith’s footsteps were getting louder, and I knew she’d find us soon.
“No! I can do this! I’ve gotta join the Emperor’s coven someday, so I have to do beginner level spells!”
“I wish I could do those…” I said glumly, staring at my stupid powerless hands.
“It’s alright (Y/N), I’ll protect you!” Hunter laughed, momentarily forgetting about the door.
“Yeah…I think I’ll buy a sword though, too. Who needs magic when you have the power of pain on your side!” I cheered.
“Well, I’ll still protect you. You should know how to use weapons, but with me around you shouldn’t have to use them!” He stood dramatically with a hand over his heart. I laughed.
“Hunter, you’re such a dork-”
“THERE YOU ARE! And of COURSE, the Emperor’s brat is here too…”
“LILITH!” I shrieked. “C’mon Hunter! This way!”
“Eep! Yup, yeah, coming!” He sqeaked, and again we ran down the halls.
*******
I sat on my bed and researched the Emperor’s Coven. Not to join it, obviously, but to see if there was any record of Belos's means of punishment. After seeing an old foe practically have a mental breakdown in fear of punishment, I had found myself worrying.
I threw another book into the ‘pile of useless’. This wasn’t working…the only things on the Emperor’s coven were ads. I sighed. I was getting nowhere.
Time to take my mind off things, I decided.
So here I was, sitting on the couch at Eda’s house. We weren’t supposed to talk out loud, as Eda’s apprentice- Luz the human- was trying to listen to some journal entry from an Echo mouse.
I began looking through Eda’s shelves. Maybe I’d have better luck with her books? I winced as my hand touched something wet…
“Eda, what’s this?” I whispered, pulling my hand out of a bowl of potion.
“Beats me- oh wait, that’s Lilith’s scrying potion.” She whispered back. “We use it to spy on and prank the Emperor’s guards.”
I nodded. Huh, maybe this would be useful… “Can I use it?”
“Knock yourself out, kid. And if you see that hand witch, BURN her. There’s still a bruise on my back from Eclipse Lake.”
“Thanks.”
I got up and slipped to the other room, not wanting to disturb Luz. I wasn’t expecting much from the potion, but I figured it was worth a shot.
But after ten minutes of watching the guards do absolutely nothing, I sighed. Maybe this was a bad idea. I decided to find a snack while I waited.
I returned to the room with my bag of dried ratter-tree leaves, a bit ruffled from having tripped over Hooty. I drew glyphs, doodles, comics….ugh. This was boring.
Bored….bored…bored…bORED….
“You failed at capturing the Moon Witch? Hunter, be glad you brought the portal key, for if you had failed completely ....”
I jumped back and hit my head on a shelf, before running towards the potion.
“I…I’m sorry sir.” Hunter’s voice sounded from somewhere off-screen. “But what did the Moon Witch even do?”
“Are you questioning me, Hunter?” Said Belos softly. A shiver ran down my spine. People who yelled while angry were scary, but people who whispered…they were even worse. They had enough control to not flip out, but you could hear it…laced in their words, that slight undertone that could strike you dead.
I worried involuntarily about Hunter….Dang it, why’d he have to act like a person? It was easier to hate him when his personality was just wisecracking and annoying me.
“You of all people should know how dangerous wild magic is…and yet you didn’t confiscate those glyphs?”
“No, sir, I just….I hoped maybe…maybe the Moon Witch could….” He paused as though he was realizing he shouldn’t say what he was about to say. He pressed on, but it slowly became a whisper. “Well…I thought it might be nice for me to….have access to more magic? Because…you know-”
A black spike raced across my line of sight, making a soft thud as it hit it’s target. I heard a weak whimper, so quiet it could have been my imagination…I felt sick. The image changed to a different section of the coven. I have to do something.
Heart pounding, I ran downstairs, nearly crashing into a suit of armor.
“Hey-Eda-I-gotta-go-on-a-secret-mission-BYYYEEEE!” I yelled over my shoulder as I left the house.
Palisman-Palisman-Palisman-
My staff zoomed towards me, nearly knocking me down.
“Okay. Okay, we’re going to the Emperor’s palace, okay?” I said, tying my mask. “ ….what do you mean ‘do I have a plan’?! Of course I have a plan! It’s….” I trailed off, heart sinking. I had no idea what I was doing.
“I’ll make one on the way.” I decided, hopping onto my staff.
*******
Hunter
I returned to my room feeling sick. I was honestly trying not to react to the pain, but I was trembling more than I wanted to.
I sighed and stared into the mirror. With the mask on, no one would ever guess how messed up my face was. Unfortunately, to tend to my new wound, I’d have to take it off. It almost seemed like I was taking my personality off with it. With it on, I was charismatic, witty, and confident….too confident, apparently, considering my overconfidence was my downfall, I thought as my fingertips brushed over the bloody inside surface of my mask. If I were less confident, I wouldn’t ask stupid questions. I looked back into the mirror, maskless now to assess the damage.
With it off, I wasn’t sure what I was.
But visually, I was a hot mess with it off. I stared into my reflection’s sunken eyes. Titan, do I always look this tired? I let my eyes flicker over my features, wincing at the new bruised gash across my nose, the scar on my cheek…whatever. Maybe they were unattractive, but I deserved them. I could do better…I should do better.
I sighed and sat on my bed. Why did I have to let (Y/N) go? I should have tried harder to explain how good the Emperor was. I should have tried harder, then (Y/N) would get it. We could have gone on missions together. We could have been friends…it would be nice to have a friend.
But no. I gave up on taming the wild witch, and now I was breathing out of my mouth because my nose hurt too much. Now I had a new, if temporary, badge of shame.
I stared at the ceiling, watching as the little red palisman who decided it liked me zoomed around. It brought a slight smile to my face, watching the little guy, weird as it was. It flew till it was tired, and landed on my head.
“Heh, at least you like me…” I chuckled. It was nice, sitting in peace for the moment. My nose stung, but still…it was nice.
KNOCK KNOCK!
I seethed. Who was at the door? Everyone knows they’re supposed to leave me alone when the door is closed! I rolled off the bed and slipped my mask back on.
“What do you want?” I grumbled, wrapping my cloak awkwardly. There was another knock.
“Back here!” Said a muffled voice.
The window? I spun around, only to find myself staring at…
“(Y/N)?” I frowned. What was the Moon Witch doing here?!
I opened the window, staring skeptically.
“Hiiiii~” (Y/N) grinned. I frowned, knowing that the drawn out ‘hi’s and ‘bye’s were kind of my thing- the witch was doing an impression of me.
“Y/N), you’re not supposed to be here! I’ll have to turn you in to the Emperor, you know that, right?”
(Y/N) stared back at me, eyes too wide. “Wait, really? Oh, shoot!” I rolled my eyes, and the robotic accent dropped.
“Anyways, I’m here on a mission.” (Y/N) continued.
“What sort of mission?” I frowned, trying not to sound curious.
“Easy. I’m here to kidnap you.”
I felt my eyes widen, words on the tip of my tongue- when (Y/N) started laughing.
“Nah, I’m teasing. I’m only temporarily kidnapping you. Borrowing you!”
“...I’m sorry, what?”
*******
(Y/N)
“...You weren’t kidding, huh.” Hunter said over the wind.
“Yeah- we’re getting tea!” I yelled, wind whipping through my hair.
“Why?” Hunter yelled back. I pretended I didn’t hear him- it wasn’t impossible. With the wind and the fabric mask over the lower half of his face, it was actually quite likely that I wouldn’t hear him.
“Hmm? Oh look, we’re here!” I turned back to him, gesturing towards the town in front of me- Atherport.
“Welcome to the head!” I smiled, dodging a giant demon I nearly collided with.
As I began our descent, Hunter looked around.
“Huh, I think I’ve been here before,” He commented.
I snorted. “I know, we fought in the town square. I had bruises for like a month after that.”
“Reeaally? I don’t recall.” He said loftily.
“Ha!” I grinned, hopping off the staff. “That’s because you fought me as (Y/N).”
“Wait, what? I’ve met you as (Y/N)?”
I tapped my mask. “That’s all I’m gonna say about that, Goldie. I’ve got a secret identity to protect, remember?”
“But- oh come on!”
I chuckled and ran ahead.
He caught up pretty quickly, giving his usual chirpy “Hiiiii~”
“C’mon, the tea shop is up here! Do you have any tea preferences?” I grinned.
“Oh, I’ve never had the stuff. Belos says it tastes like a potion that got confused.”
“...Your life is so sad…Luz was right.”
“UGH, Luz! Stupid little endearing human.” He scowled at the thought of her.
“Really? I’ve met her, she seems charming,” I smirked.
“Well, she isn’t. No…she is, and it’s her problem.”
I shrugged. “Maybe you’re just not used to people being nice to you.”
I slowed to a stop as we reached the teahouse, not missing the shadow that passed over his face when I reminded him of reality.
“...Maybe I’m not. You know, I’m surprised you’re being nice to me right now- you going soft, Moony?” He teased.
“I don’t really want to be rivals, but, y’know…” I shrugged, “Maybe someday we won’t be.”
He stared at me silently for a moment. “Maybe someday, yeah….”
I couldn’t see his mouth, but his eyes were smiling. I smiled back.
“Ready for me to change your life?” I said dramatically, swinging the teahouse’s door open.
“Lead the way,” He shrugged. I couldn’t tell if he sounded annoyed or just tired.
We stepped into the little shop. It was brightly colored, contrasting my black and bronze moon witch color palette, and the whole place smelled like something I recognized from my time in the human realm- vanilla. If I recall correctly, lunarluss produces a similar scent, but it only grows on the head.
I decided to steal some later.
I ordered myself a drink, and gave Hunter a menu to flip through.
“Hey (Y/N)- what’s angel’s breath?”
“An interesting substance that’s toxic to witches. Don’t get that drink.”
“Hmmph. Uhhh….how about apple blood?”
“Yeah, you can get that- you’ll probably need firebee honey though, ‘cause it’s pretty bitter.”
He nodded and went up to order.
He came back a few seconds later, drinks in hand.
“Oh, the honey is back there.” I informed him.
He scoffed. “I can handle it- I mean, come on- it’s just apples.”
I nodded. “Suit yourself…”
He shoved his fabric mask up- it still covered his nose, but he could drink. He took a sip of the drink and immediately shivered. “Oh my Titan what the heck is in this. It tastes like straight up poison!”
I chuckled. “Guess who told you soooo~”
“Oh, shut it, (Y/N). Watch, I’ll finish this. I’ll complain, but I’ll finish it.”
I laughed, taking a sip of my drink. “You have fun with that- I’ll be here, happily enjoying my lunarluss scaremel tea, while you suffer- Hey!”
He snatched my drink and took a sip of it.
“Hmm. Tastes like something you’d like- what’s that flavor….oh yeah, the souls of the innocent! ...I’m keeping this!”
I scoffed. “Absolutely not. Get your own!”
“Nah, yours tastes better. It tastes like victory.”
I took my drink back and shook my head. “Ha ha ha, no. Just add honey to your drink, trust me, it’ll be good.”
“Fiiiine.” He sighed and went to the flavoring stand in the back.
*******
We stepped outside of the shop.
“Where to next?” I asked
“Well…how about the Boiling sea?” He suggested, to my surprise. I thought he would say ‘back to the palace’.
“Okay! I love the ocean.”
He smiled. Did you know that the ocean is cold in the human realm? Apparently, they play in the water- Weird, right?”
“I’ve been there before. You’d love it…the water is cold, the beaches are safe to walk on barefoot, and you can swim.”
“What’s swimming?”
“It’s like floating, but in the water.”
“Huh. What else did you see in the human world?”
“Well…instead of using magic, they used mechanics and electricity. Sorta like your staff, theoretically. And the trees are green there, and the rain doesn’t boil…it’s a bit more peaceful, but the people are the same. Good, bad, cruel, and kind…everything.”
“It sounds nice. Really odd, but…nice. How’d you even get to the human world?”
“Well…when I was a kid, my parents were hunted for being wild witches. When Belos petrified them, my aunt took me in. Anyways, Belos was after me because of something to do with his…I dunno, his grim something, so she sent me to live in the human world for most of my life. Uh…ta-da!”
Hunter stared silently.
“I guess the moral of the story is…wild magic has hurt people. But so has coven magic. So let’s just let magic be magic?”
Hunter sat there for a moment.
“WELL, anyways. Changing the subject. Uhh…what’s it like in the Emperor’s coven?” I said awkwardly. “I mean, you at least semi-succeeded your last mission, right? Doesn’t that give you….privileges?”
He shrugged. “I’m allowed to leave the palace so long as I’m maskless- so I don’t reflect badly on the coven. Um…most of the adults hate me because I’m a kid giving them orders, so it’s fun to mess with them. I have to try really hard to stay out of trouble, not that I’m doing a very good job at that lately.”
“What do you mean? You seem to be trying really hard…
“…I just mean…I’m here with you, a wanted criminal. One who I’m supposed to be capturing. But instead of making myself useful….I’m being selfish? I don’t know.” He huffed moodily.
I considered saying something deep and meaningful about ‘making your life your own’, but instead I opted to lighten the mood.
“....So…you DO like me! Ha!”
He snorted. “Gee, I don’t know…. ‘like’ is a strong word, Moony-”
“Ha! No take backs- you like me!”
“I tolerate you! Possibly a bit more than average!”
“It’s okay, I like you too- like I said, you’re my favorite rival. Plus I think we were friends when we were kids, but that’s all I’m gonna say about that.”
“Wait, what?” He gasped.
“La la la, pretending I can’t hear you-”
I slowed down, staring wide eyed.
“Oh my Titan.” My cheery mood was immediately dropped as I was greeted by the site ahead of me.
“What is it?” Hunter frowned, not seeming to grasp the gravity of the situation.
“Kikimora.” I muttered.
He stared at me for a moment, and scoffed. “Really? You’re scared of Kikimora?”
“Hunter, she wants to kill you, remember? She’s more unhinged than a…more unhinged than an…hmmm…more unhinged then a certain Hunter?”
“Okay, ouch. And also…she doesn’t recognize me maskless.”
“Hunter, you have a very distinctive voice.” I hissed. “Annnd, she has scouts with her…Annnnd I’m a wanted criminal. But worst of all…that’s palistrom wood!”
“Oh right. You wild witches and your precious palisman.” He scoffed, tossing his head.
“You have a freaking palisman on your shoulder right now Hunter, so don’t even start.”
“Hmm.” He was scheming something. I cocked an eyebrow, worried about what was about to go down.
“I’ve got it.” He declared. “You and I break in, steal the wood, you take some back to the forest and I take the rest to Belos. It’s a win-win: I prove that I’m useful, and you get at least some wood back, right?”
I sighed. There were so many things wrong with that sentence.
“You don’t get it. I can’t have just some, the forest needs to be replenished. In the human realm, they have this rule- when you cut down a tree, you have to plant another. Problem is, they don’t listen to that rule, and now their world is running out of forests. And if we do the same with palistrom wood, well…we’re gonna run out of abandoned palismen eventually, right?”
“Well I technically need all of it too! I can’t fail Belos more than I already have, so it’s either this or bringing you in. And for some reason, I can’t bring myself to turn you in- not because I like you! But because…I don’t know, but I don’t want to turn you in. And I’m being weak, and I really shouldn’t be-” He shivered and shoved his mask further over his nose.
I hesitantly put a hand on his shoulder. “Hey, well…you’re not on a mission, are you. Belos didn’t tell you to find wood, he told Kikimora- actually, for all he knows, you’re just…chilling at the library or something nerdy like that.”
“Of course I’m not on a mission. I-I disappointed him, I should have captured you. He wants competent witches on missions, not yours truly, but sadly he has to keep me around because of the Titan’s plans.”
“What about your plans?” I asked, staring him in the eyes through my mask. “Hunter’s plans?”
He stared back silently. “What do you mean?”
“I guess I mean…who is…Hunter? What does Hunter want? Not the Golden Guard, not Belos- not even the Titan. But this weird blond kid in front of me, what does he want?”
Hunter sat silently for a few moments before giving a soft “I don’t know.”
He broke his eye contact to look down at his palms.
“It’s hard to have a future in this world when you don’t have magic, so I never thought about it after I discovered my lack of powers. But then you and that human showed up…neither of you have powers either, but you’re both powerful witches. So I guess- No, no no no no no. I shouldn’t talk like this.”
“Why?”
He scoffed. “Why should I tell you? You won’t even say why you brought me here!”
I nodded, defeated. “Fine. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to say, but it looks like you’re more inquisitive than I anticipated.” I took a deep breath. “I brought you here because…well, it starts at the Owl House, of course. As things always do. And they had a scrying potion there that they used to spy on the coven- not for anything valuable, just to prank the scouts. But…uh…I heard my name, and took a peek. And I saw….you in trouble.”
He cringed. He knew what I was referring to. “You shouldn’t be seeing that.”
“Maybe not.” I acknowledged. “But I did. And we might be on opposite sides, but you’re still the friend I had as a kid, and the rival who was my friend for a minecart ride. And anyways, even if you weren’t, no kid deserves to be hurt by the people they trust.”
Something glimmered in his eyes, but faded fast. “It’s normal. You’re just being sensitive.” He scoffed, turning away.
“That’s the thing, Hunter. It’s not normal. And I wish you’d come with me, but I’m not gonna force you.”
He looked back at me, eyes softening. “I…I can’t, (Y/N). But…maybe someday. Maybe.”
I smiled at him as warmly as I could muster, and I think he smiled back.
“MOON WITCH!” Yelled a shrill voice behind me. Kikimora. “AND YOU, you’re the boy from Latissa!”
I looked up to see the hand witch standing over us. Hunter and I glanced back at each other, before he grabbed my wrist.
“And that’s our cue to leave. Byyyyye!” He waved, and we bolted.
“Where’re we headed?” I gasped, dodging a demon.
“Uh…The lunarluss gardens! Kiki is allergic.”
“Perfect.”
We ducked into the garden and hid in one of the bushes.
“You think we’re safe for now?” I panted.
“Hopefully,” He answered, trying to catch his breath. He pulled his mask down to breathe better, and as he did, I saw the full extent of Belos’s….methods of punishment.
My breath hitched. Hunter had a cut…although a ‘rip’ might be a better way to describe it. It was bloody, and I had a feeling it hadn’t been cleansed properly.
“What?” He frowned, looking into my mask.
“It’s just…” I tapped the bridge of my nose.
“Oh- right! Right. I…uh..forgot about that.” He reached to put the mask back on, but I stopped him.
“No- Hunter, that’s gonna get infected. I have healing supplies in my bag- can I please fix it?”
He nodded slowly.
“Thank you.” I reached for the cleaning potion for open wounds. “Here. This is gonna sting a bit, okay?’
“Okay.” He breathed, staring at the fabric I had soaked with potion. He flinched as I pressed it on, but held still for the most part.
“You’re doing great. Now just hold that on there for a moment while I grab the ointment and bandage, please.”
I poured a bit of ointment on, before finally putting on the bandage.
“Better?” I said softly.
“...Yeah, actually. Um….thanks.” He smiled back at me.
“Of course.”
There was a comfortable silence that settled over us, one that was quickly broken by the steps of coven scouts entering the garden.
Hunter scowled. “Seriously- there’s never a dull moment with you wild witches.”
I sighed. “Brilliant. Alright, out of the bushes-”
Hunter nodded. “We’ll run for it. Once we’ve outrun them, we should be able to escape with your staff.”
“Great.”
He grabbed my hand. “Three, two, one-”
And we ran again. Out of the bushes and away from the scouts…and we would have made it had Kikimora not been waiting at the exit to the garden.
“There you are, fools- you thought you could hide from your Emperor? That’s treason, you know!”
Hunter looked back at me helplessly and gripped my hand tighter. I tried to hide my nervousness. The scouts were behind us now…we were surrounded.
Kikimora moved forwards towards me, perched on her abomination.
“Now, won’t the Emperor be pleased to discover the identity of the fabled ‘Moon Witch’? Abomination, take it.”
A heavy hand pulled my mask until the strings snapped. My hands flew to my eyes, unwilling to let them find (Y/N).
“Ah, frightened, Moon Witch?”
“Obviously,” I said dryly. “You practically have my friend and I at gunpoint, so no, I’m not exactly cheerful.”
“Boy, does your friend have no sense?”
“Not really.” Hunter answered. “But luckily, neither do I!”
There was the sound of an explosion, and a hand grabbed my wrist.
“Comeoncomeoncomeoncomeon- oh Titan I’m an idiot-”
I let my hand drop and looked around. We were running again.
“Hunter, what did you do?”
“Uh…wild magic.”
I grinned. “How’d you manage to do that?”
“Well…I saw your glyphs from earlier, and just…drew one on the ground. And it…ah..Might have been fire.”
“Awesome.” I grinned.
“Belos had better not find out.” He sighed. “Oh, and (Y/N)...here.” He handed me a strip of fabric. “I don’t want to see your identity if you don’t want me to, so…”
I shrugged. “Actually, I think…I don’t mind anymore. Just…Belos had better not find out.”
“Well…maybe he won’t. After all, we’re just (Y/N) and Hunter, two completely normal teenagers- it’s The Moon Witch and The Golden Guard who don’t get along.”
I smiled. “Well then…feel free to turn around.”
He looked over his shoulder as we ran, and met my eyes. Then he turned around and scoffed.
“This isn’t fair. I get your face reveal while you look cool and pretty, and you get my face reveal while I’m getting captured.”
I laughed. “All's fair in love and war,”
“Uh…what?”
“Sorry, just a human thing. Now c’mon, my staff is somewhere around here- ah, here she is.”
We hopped on and flew away just as the scouts caught up.
“So, where to next?” Hunter said, to my surprise.
“Oh, I thought you wanted to go back to the castle.” I shrugged.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right…I don’t know.”
I smiled lightly. “Unless you wanna have a sleepover- that’s to say, Luz planned a sleepover at The Owl House, so that’s where I’m headed after this.”
“Do you think they’d let me come?” He whispered.
“Do you think you’d stay Hunter and not report everyone back to the Emperor?”
“Yes! I-I mean..sure.” He coughed, failing to hide his enthusiasm.
“Then yeah. Just don’t provoke Eda, call Luz names, ooh- don’t make eye contact with Hooty, there’s an important one…Oh, I’ll just give you the rest once we get there.”
I trailed off and smiled. Maybe Hunter was a strange person for me to befriend, but I was sure glad to have him.

We're officially into week two of hiatus so here's all my Shitty RWBY character headcannons:
Ruby Rose
- before Atlas, she had stupid contact names for everyone in her scroll
- really good at makeup but doesn’t have the patience for it
- “I’ve graduated from Combat Skirts. I wear a Combat Kilt now”
- has in fact practiced her “leader face” in the mirror before
- does morning affirmations that go along the line of “You are The Huntress. You are the baddest, silver eyed bitch in Remnant. Zwei is proud of you. The moon does not care if you cry during your lunch break today so you shouldn’t either.”
Weiss Schnee
- actually hates sweet stuff. Like she had access to all really high quality stuff when she was a kid and as she grew up she kind of grew out of it
- only one on the whole team who takes her coffee black and makes fun of the others for it
- purposefully smacks people in the face with her braid but always plays it off as an accident
- Brokest Rich Bitch in Atlas
- "Hey Weiss, can you spot me?" *riffling through her FAT wallet, "Sorry can't, I'm Atlas broke."
- Is actually blind in her left eye and whenever someone sneaks up on her on that side she will reactively glyph them into the ceiling
Blake Belladonna
- nyan-binary
- playing a game of what weird stuff she can do and convince her friends that "it's a Menagerie thing."
- *wearing her boots in bed* it’s fine we do this all the time at home
- “Hey guys watch how far I can jump and still land on my feet!”
- *stubs her toe on a table* “This is a hate crime”
- she picked that up from Sun btw
- absentmindedly fluffs up her hair when she’s nervous or thinking
- no one has EVER seen her go to the bathroom in her Atlas outfit. They don’t know how she survives
Yang Xiao Long
- desperately needs a haircut and she Knows it but she'd too stubborn to give up the "don't touch my hair" schtick

All the glyphs are in the Boiling Isles, right?
I mean, the plant glyph is in the flowers, the fire glyph is in things that have being burned out, and the ice glyphs are in snowflakes.
But you remember the one that isn't exactly in the Isles, the one that Luz didn’t actually found in the nature of the isles (found it by record it)
The one that is a fricking constellation.
Tumblr media
This always bug me since season one. But now there is a character that is pretty involve with the sun, the moon and the stars.

cuauhxicalli
Cultures/periods: Aztec
Production date: 1500 (circa)
Findspot: Puebla (state)
Provenience unknown, possibly looted
The chronicles record how cuauhxicalli (eagle vessels) served as receptacles for sacrificial offerings and were used in the solemn state ceremonies of investiture and enthronement of new kings. The shape of the vessel echoes that of pottery storage jars used to hold pulque. Its upper part is composed of encircling superimposed bands of human hearts, feathers and jade. The front bears a solar disk and the glyph 4 Movement, the symbol for the fifth epoch in the Aztec creation cycle. On the base beneath this is the glyph 1 Rain. On the obverse side a symbol for the moon is found together with the glyph 2 Rabbit, one of the calendrical names for the pulque god. This opposition expresses a deep-rooted Mesoamerican concern with the opposed, complementary forces governing the rhythmic relationship between seasonal changes and human affairs. The hollow basin on the top of the vessel and some details of the exterior surface were never completed. The object also shows signs of having been intentionally defaced, particularly at the sides. This suggests that an unexpected event, perhaps the arrival of the Spanish, intervened before it could be finished.

Whumptober 2021, would you write 23? The Collector is after Lilith and/or Eda because it wants the Owl Beast, and attacks to grab them while they are fighting the Emperoro's Coven. In the middle of the fight, it spots Hunter and his magenta eyes, and immediately decides it HAS to own a grimwalker as well (to Hunter's complete confusion because how did it know he's a powerless witch and surely they are not that rare?), so he grabs both/all 3. Bonus if Belos and Luz cooperate to get them back.
Ehehehe, I replaced Belos with someone else, but anyway
“Edalyn and Lilith Clawthorne—you are under arrest for conspiracy ag—”
Lilith cut off the coven scout’s proclamation with a quick fire glyph. “Anyway, Edalyn, as I was saying, I found a truly amazing new glyph combo that—”
A blast of red lightning cut her off, and she whirled around. The coven scout hadn’t come alone. “You.”
The Golden Guard leaned on his staff. “Aw, Lilith, you don’t seem very happy to see me!”
Eda shifted into her harpy form, and Lilith felt just a twinge of jealousy—how come she couldn’t do that yet? But there was a much more immediate threat.
“Bring it, brat. You’re just a bunch of talk. You couldn’t arrest me if you tried.”
In a flash of gold, he was right in her face. “Wanna bet?”
His staff caught her right in the chest, sending her flying backwards. Eda shrieked in rage, swiping at him with her talons. He dodged, zipping to the side, but Eda’s harpy form could match even his magical speed, and she whirled around in record time, hitting him in the face with one of her wings. He went flying backwards, but Eda cried out in pain, clutching her wing. He must have managed to hit her even as she hit him.
“Edalyn!”
Lilith scrambled to her feet, running towards her sister. Hunter appeared in front of her again, his mask cracked from the force of Eda’s blow. Lilith skipped backwards as he swung his staff at her. She lunged forward, slapping an ice glyph onto his helmet before he could react. He ripped it off as the ice started to cover the eye holes, just in time for Lilith to grab his head and bring her knee up into his face, running past him to her sister.
“Edalyn! Are you alright?”
“Eh—I’ve been worse.” Eda shook her wing. “Ow, that stings. Good hit, Lili.” Eda’s eyes widened, and she wrapped her wings around Lilith as the air charged with magic. “Look out!”
Lilith ducked out from the protective circle of her wings as Eda howled, falling backwards. “Alright, brat, I—”
But Hunter was still dazed from her blow, touching his nose with a wince.
“A shared curse. Two owl beasts. Interesting. Less novelty, but… perhaps just a different kind of novelty.”
Lilith whirled around to see some hooded person, glowing moons and stars covering their cloak. She whipped out her glyphs, sending a wave of ice spikes hurtling towards the hooded figure. “Leave my sister alone!”
The figure seemed to almost… glitch, as Luz would say, out of existence, the ice spikes passing through them harmlessly. “You put the curse on her. Created the novelty. Besides, I’m not the only thing the owl beast has to worry about.”
Hunter appeared next to her, and Lilith just barely dodged the swing of his staff. “Eda! Eda, get up, please!”
“Back off,” Hunter warned the hooded figure, “These two are my prey.”
Lilith swept his legs out from under him. “We are no one’s prey.”
Eda staggered to her feet, getting bigger. “Lili—Lili, I’m transforming!”
“What? That’s impossible, you were already—” Lilith raised an ice shield just in time to block Hunter’s attack. “No! Eda, deep breaths—”
“I don’t know what’s wrong! I was perfectly calm, I shouldn’t be transforming, Lili!”
“Okay, well—” Lilith ducked another blow from Hunter, grabbed the end of his staff, and swung him around, throwing him back at the hooded creature. “We just have to get you back to some elixir, I—”
A yelp made her turn around. Hunter had gotten sealed in a glowing bubble, the hooded creature squinting at him. “I didn’t come to the market for you, but you’ll do nicely in the collection, too.”
Lilith hurried Eda away. “Quick, while he’s focused on the brat!”
“Oh, I haven’t forgotten the two of you.”
An invisible magical force separated Eda and Lilith, and before Lilith could react, golden bubbles sprang up around her and Eda as well.
“The question is, should you be displayed separately, or as part of a matched set?”
Feathers sprouted on Lilith’s arms. “Oh, no.”
The owl beast inside of her screeched, and then the world went black.
When Lilith woke up again, she was still trapped in the bubble. Eda’s bubble was next to her, her sister in her harpy form, asleep. Or, at least Lilith hoped she was asleep.
Lilith heard the sound of warping magic, and she looked to her right. Hunter was trapped in a bubble of his own. As she watched, he glowed gold, clutching his staff, and disappeared, only to reappear in a different part of the bubble, growling in frustration. He disappeared and reappeared again, clutching his staff tightly. And again. And again.
“That’s obviously not working,” she called.
“Can it,” he snapped. He disappeared again, then reappeared, collapsing to the “floor” of his bubble, panting. “Why am I here?!”
“Because you’re an oddity, and I collect oddities,” the hooded figure responded, sweeping through, “Lilith, I see you’ve transformed back. Unfortunate, I wanted your display to be in your beast form.”
“So sorry to disappoint. Release my sister and I. You can keep the brat.”
“Hm. Interesting bargaining strategy. But unless you can come up with a way to get me something rarer than your owl beast shared curse, I’m afraid you’ll be staying right here with the, ah, brat.” The collector reached effortlessly into Hunter’s bubble and snatched up his staff. “I’ll be taking this before you hurt yourself, little one.”
“Hey!” Hunter pounded on the bubble with his fists, leaving little golden indents that slowly faded away. “Give that back!”
The Collector didn’t respond, simply walked away.
“Oddity. I’m not an oddity.” Hunter started to pace the bubble, which shifted and moved beneath him, giving Lilith the overall impression of a hamster stuck in a ball. “Not on the level of the owl beast, anyway.” He heaved a distressed sigh, kicking at the bubble. It wobbled, making him fall with a yelp.
Lilith searched her pockets, but all of her tools for making glyphs were gone. Unless… “Hey. Hunter.”
He lifted his head. “You can call me the golden guard.”
“I’m not calling you that. Do you still have that little notepad and pencil you used to carry around everywhere?”
“Yeah.”
Lilith grinned. “Perfect. I know how to get both of us out of here.”
“Yeah? How?”
“First, you have to promise that you won’t run off and leave me here if I show you.”
“I still need to bring you back to the emperor.”
Lilith shrugged. “Good enough. Here, trace on the paper what I do.” Lilith touched one finger to her bubble, making it glow, and traced a set of glyphs. The first one she’d traced was gone by the time she finished the set, but Hunter held up his paper, the completed circle sketched out.
“This is wild magic!”
“Yes, but it’s our only way out of here. I won’t tell the emperor if you won’t.”
Hunter glanced back in the direction that the Collector had one in, then nodded, tapping the glyph. A spike made out of ice shot out, poking at the side of the magic bubble.
“Almost…” Lilith muttered.
Hunter grabbed the ice spike and shoved against it.
There was an audible pop, and Hunter fell to the floor. “Ha!”
“Shhhhhhh!”
Hunter nodded and stood under her bubble, re-drawing the glyphs. Lilith gracefully landed next to him, and grabbed his arm as he moved towards Eda. “Wait! It might be easier to keep her in the bubble than to carry her.”
“So, the little powerless witch thinks he can run away.”
The Collector appeared in front of them, and Lilith snatched the notepad and pencil out of Hunter’s hands. “I’ve got this.”
The Collector snapped their fingers, and Lilith felt feathers break out along her arms. “Uh-oh.”
“Fatal mistake, witchling. Never release a monster unless you’re sure it won’t turn on you.”

“EEEEEEEEEEEEdaaaaaaa!” Luz called, “Liiiiiiiliiiiiiith! Where are you?!” She snatched a feather up from the ground. “Eda!”
Luz heard a grumble through the trees. “Oh, good going, Steve. Most people lose their keys, or a few snails. Not you. You managed to lose a WHOLE COVEN HEAD!”
Luz charged out into a clearing, tackling a coven scout to the ground. “What did you do with Eda and Lilith?!”
The coven scout—Steve, Luz presumed—yelped. “Me? Nothing!”
“Liar!”
“No, really—we were fighting, well, the Clawthornes and the Golden Guard were fighting, I was busy getting my ribs broken, but—”
“The Golden Guard, too? Where are they?!”
“That’s the thing! They all got captured! Together!”
Luz clambered off of him. “What?”
Steve sat up. “Some creep in a hood just… up and grabbed all of them.” The coven scout put his head in his hands with a groan. “Ohhhhh, I am going to be in so much trouble! I lost the head of the coven! Hey, do you think you could just kill me right here? It’ll be more convenient for everyone involved.”
Luz sat back on her heels. “Hey, Steve? How would you like to get your coven head back?”
“More than anything!”
Luz got up, offering him a hand. “Come on. We’ve got a rescue to plan.”

Hunter skipped backwards as a cursed Lilith lunged towards him. “Hey—whoa—quit that! Snap out of—”
His words were cut off with a whoof as her tail whipped around, catching him in the chest. Hunter skidded backwards, struggling to suck air into his lungs.
The owl beast pounced, talons swiping across his chest, tearing right through his armor. Another hit like that, and he was dead meat. The Collector appeared, the owl-beast Lilith trapped in a golden bubble. “Well, that’s enough of that. A good scare is one thing, but no injuries. I want both of you looking your best.” The Collector snapped their fingers again, and beast Lilith fell asleep, just like the owl lady.
Hunter scrambled away as the Collector approached him, moving backwards until his back hit the wall. “Get away from me!”
The Collector waved a hand, and Hunter went weightless, floating deeper into the cave. “I think I know just where to put you. I need space for the two owl beasts, but you, you’re just the right size for a fountain topper.”
Hunter struggled against the magic holding him. “Let—me—go! I’m not an oddity!”
The Collector laughed, and Hunter froze in place, a golden casing rising up to hold him in position. “You’re rarer than you know, grimwalker.”
Xxx
Luz dashed forward as she heard shrieking. “That’s Lilith—ack, she must have gone into her owl beast form!”
The sounds faded away, but Luz charged towards their source, Steve panting behind her. “Come on!”
They came to a cave, and Luz shrugged, creating a light spell. “Whelp, in we go!”
Steve grabbed her arm. “We don’t know what’s in there!”
“Yeah, we do. Eda and Lilith and H—the golden guard. Let’s go!”
Luz shook Steve off and ventured into the cave. Her light spell illuminated two golden bubbles, one with Eda inside, and the other with Lilith, trapped in her beast form. Both were fast asleep. Luz started pushing they bubbles out. “Yes!”
Steve started searching the cave, peering behind stalagmites. “Golden Guard?” he whispered, “Sir? Are you there?” Steve caught Luz’s arm as she squeezed Lilith’s bubble out of the cave entrance. “Hey! We can’t leave without him!”
Oh. Yeah. “I’m coming, I’m coming, we’ll find him”
Luz and Steve crept through the caves. Luz gasped as they came into a massive cavern, filled with more of those floating bubbles, all containing some odd, mutated demon or strange book. And there, at the center, was Hunter, frozen in place by a golden shell atop a bubbling fountain like some creepy statue.
“I got him!” Luz swung a whip made of vines up, grabbing the frozen Hunter’s foot. She started to pull, but Steve grabbed her arm.
“Wait, you might hurt him!”
“What’s your big idea, then?”
“Can you get the area right below him?”
Luz sighed and roped the top of the fountain. Steve grabbed the vine and scrambled up.
“A human. None of you in the collection, yet.”
Luz whirled around to see some hooded creep watching her. She whipped out her glyphs. “Stay back! I’m getting my friends and leaving, and you’re not going to stop me!”
“Oh, is that so?”
A golden bubble formed around Luz. “Hey!”
“You’re staying right here, where you belong. With all the other things that don’t fit in.”
Luz pounded on the bubble. “Let me out!”
She heard a war cry, and Steve came jumping off of the top of the fountain, the frozen Hunter secured to his back by her vines. Steve landed on the bubble, waving his arms. “Wh-whoa!” He fell, and the tip of his mask slammed into the bubble, popping it.
“Hey!” the Collector shouted, “Where did you—”
Luz grabbed Steve’s arm, hauling him towards the entrance. “GO!”
She slapped an ice glyph on the ground, blocking the collector from following them. They bolted out the entrance, and Luz roped the two bubbles holding Eda and Lilith, dragging them along behind her.
She and Steve didn’t stop running until they were well away from the cavern. Luz stopped, panting. “Wow—okay.” She pulled out her notepad. “I guess this is where we fight each other for Lilith and Eda, huh?”
Steve waved a hand, untying Hunter and setting him down gently. “Normally. But…” He glanced down at Hunter, almost looking soft. “I’ve got to figure out how to get the Golden Guard unfrozen, first. And if you slip away with the two of them… eh.”
“Hey. Thanks for saving me back there. You could have grabbed Hunter and left while that creep was occupied, but you didn’t.”
Steve shrugged, sitting down next to the frozen Hunter. “I wouldn’t have been able to find the Golden Guard without you. Call it even. Wait. Hunter?”
Luz grabbed the ropes around the Lilith and Eda bubbles. “Don’t tell him I told you that, bye!”

hi cherry i want to ask what placements or aspects do you think affect our dreams or how we dream?
thank u
hey mermaid girl <3 i have a write - up on this i would love  to share!
~Our sleeping dreams are taken in the 4th house/ICOur waking dreams are taken in Neptune/12th house. Since childhood, your lunar house has been recording the story of your life and has seen and remembers everything in their embryonic nonverbal symbolic, visual, emotive, psychic forms. Dreams can have generational themes, we entered life in a dream as our first state of being within our mother, and remaining as part of her consciousness for the earliest part of life. crescent Moon on top of Mercury’s glyph is the intertwining of the conscious mind and the subconscious of early lunar conditioning coming together, the Moon’s cycles are also the circles of birth, life, and death, the first and latest years of life are spent mostly asleep.
We dream of being many different ages in various stages of life, and the Moon’s inner child often replays significant memories of places and people from this time in our dreams. Sleeping takes us back to that very vulnerable and pure state. We come into this world alone, leave it alone, and dream alone. The Moon watches over us each hour of the night as it passes through each house in our horoscope. This may be why some people tend to wake up at the same time each night as the Moon crosses a trigger or alert point.Neptune is eternally asleep in us and invites us to join the dream while we are awake. Neptune is the shadow of Mercury so the mind’s cognition and consciousness is weak but the Mind’s Eye open-wide for us to look into and escape back into our fantasy life or imaginary ideal,Neptune transports us into trance-states, hypnosis, fugue, and sedation.
The world’s greatest art, design, beauty, song, sculpture, poetry, motion capture, scripts, theatre productions are inspired and nourished by Neptune Mind’s-eye, as the emblem of the ocean Neptune is our collective unconscious, so Neptune also gives us the ability to remember, symbolically, or creatively interpret our dreams, gain the ability to lucid dream or revisit them in waking life, to paint form into this unformed lunar images. A potent Neptune presence in the chart is also an indication of vivid, intense, and prophetic dreaming experiences. Neptune is always calling us back to sleep, away from the heaviness of life we pass Neptune on the way down, waiting on the borderline in the only place that it makes sense.Levitating in that mystical, magical, meditative, floating, foggy, distorted, dissociated, druggy, delirious state of being, the one that Pisces and the 12th house is closest with
I hope  this could give you some insight and thank you for reading my blog xx Cherry
