With the Doodler dealt with and the world still turning, Hermie moves in with Taylor. The two of them navigate being roommates and the emotional fallout of their journey together. Hermie learns to play the role of someone within a caring family, and Taylor discovers that maybe he didn’t make it out of their journey as unscathed as he thought.

While we wait are slowly dying for chapter 9, I have a, perhaps silly question. Do you actually identify with Lacy? Like is she a self insert hitting close to home or is she more like an escapism character to you? (It’s that for me fyi and 100% what I need)

HI :-) thanks for being so patient by the way, she's coming together i just keep having that fun thing where i zone out mid sentence BUT. i really hope to get it out soon. because it's a fun chapter. fun is definitely an appropriate word. hehe

and AS FOR MISS LACY well. i'll tell you.

at first, i definitely treated her as more of a model of escapism (like who doesn't want to imagine oneself as a mean mythic rich bitch, very cathartic especially if you're not rich n never have been) butttt as i'm noodling more on parts of her psyche, she's becoming more real and relatable to me. a lot of lacy's anger and restraint i remember in myself as an 18 year old and of course the fuckin universal dilemma of the mortifying ordeal of being known.

i used a lot of a younger me in order to inform how i want lacy to come across (pretentious, kinda insufferable, SCARED! and awkwardly sweet ultimately), and there's a lot more of that coming in her trajectory in the sequel to hellfire & ice which i'm writing as a partial coming-of-age story for those of us in our late 20s.

but now she's definitely less of a self insert and more of a something that's been plucked from the bone of my pinkie finger and made whole.

long answer short, what started as simple x reader escapism whirlpooled into me healing my inner asshole 18 year old!

Bro got his truck when he was 22, before that, he would carry Dave around on the bus lol

He (like Dirk) doesn't like the crusts on his pizza, but started eating them as the parent of a picky toddler, and I guess never broke that habit, he is a parent down at the center of himself, even if he wouldn't admit it

I headcanon all the Striders as having pretty severe ADHD, just well. Because lol

He has a bunch of the same shirts and shoes because they're "efficient" not because he particularly liked any of them, and I don't think he could be considered particularly fashionable, even if popped collars were, indeed, a thing in 2009

He gets freckles in the sun, which I think he usually manages to avoid with his silly little hat

He's left handed but that's not really a headcanon so much as canon bc hussie is left handed and tends to draw all of them holding swords in their left unless the sprite is flipped haha!

Big Ol' Crush on Jake Harley when he was a kid. Compounded with time and bitterness made for a pretty fraught relationship lol

Bro used to DJ (i mean he has mixing equipment but we all know the smuppets are where the money is at) but Dave was getting too old to leave alone in the car (yes he fucking left his baby in the car don't tell me he wouldn't i know him) so he had to stop

He broke his arm when he was 12 (he fell down the stairs lol)

Bro is afraid of airplanes because he doesn't like being out of control, there's nothing to do, and there are no feasible exits from said plane

He didn't start smoking until he got Dave (unrelated to Cal, but I do think that Cal's influence grew and built over time, and possibly was even more extreme because of Dave's presence, so who knows where he'd be without it)

also neither he nor Mom really know how to cook, Bro a little more than Mom because she spent most of her time drinking and pretending to be a parent without putting the work in and Bro has been on his own basically since teenhood

He and Dave have been to Disneyworld (they got kicked out)

He was really into phreaking payphones as a teenager (lookin at u geometrician)

His first Halloween costume was Sam the Eagle

1) how many works do you have on ao3?

49. They’ve crept up on me!

2) what is your total ao3 word count?

340,321. It’ll take a while before I hit the half-million mark but I’m working on it!

3) how many fandoms have you written for, and what are they?

4: Silicon Valley, Good Omens (TV), The Terror and Hannibal (honestly Hannibal barely counts because I wrote one ficlet and got it out of my system).

4) what are your top 5 fics by Kudos.

Most of my top-kudosed fics are my Good Omens ones, and I don’t know if anyone follows me for those anymore. My top-kudosed in my current fandom (The Terror) are:

Two Houses, Alike in Indignity – aka my BritPol AU.

Da mi basia mille, deinde centum – kissing. Just… a lot of kissing.

A wounded deer leaps highest – an extended riff on the theme of Francis Crozier Submits to the Mortifying Ordeal of Being Known. And also Being the Little Spoon.

Worthier than he knows – Mirror sex! Francis Crozier wriggling furiously under the weight of admiration and thirst! My apologies to TS Eliot, also.

An embarrassment of Jameses – Identity kink, James Fitzjames’s teetering pile of insecurities, and Francis Crozier’s altogether too many Jameses.

5) do you respond to comments?

I do! Not… well, or sensibly, because I love comments and they make me absolutely twitterpated, but I do respond.

6)what's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

Carnevale ends with unresolved heartbreak, insecurity and misdirected feeling. And this one’s not angsty, so much as grubby: a very nasty imagined interstitial between James Fitzjames and Francis Crozier after Cornelius Hickey’s flogging. And at least one of the possible endings of this Choose-your-own-Ending Fitzier is, er. Less than pleasant.

7) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

I’m an unashamed wuss, so I tend to write fics with happy endings, or at least happy-for-now endings. I’d say it’s a tossup between two fics. The first is my Good Omens human AU where Crowley is a determined bookstore customer, because Aziraphale and Crowley get together AND Crowley gets to have the book AND Aziraphale gets to not sell it. The second is my Terror BritPol AU, where Francis Crozier and James Fitzjames get to U-Haul AND Brexit is averted. Okay, that might actually be my happiest ending.

8) do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you've ever written?

I don’t write crossovers per se, but I have written a Silicon Valley Regency AU which riffed on both the Twelve Dancing Princesses and has vibes of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. And I’ve written another Silicon Valley AU which loosely spins off Henry II and Thomas Becket, and my Terror BritPol AU takes a lot of its beats from the National Theatre’s This House.

9) have you ever received hate on a fic?

Lord, no, never written anything popular enough, I don’t think.

10)Do you write smut? What kind?

I do indeed! The … messy … kind, typically. As in ‘Just throw away those sheets, they’re beyond saving’.

11)have you ever had a fic stolen?

I don’t think so.

12) have you ever had a fic translated?

I haven’t! Open invitation, lads.

13) have you ever co-written a fic before.

I’m a rotten collaborator. I can barely bring myself to the sticking post, I wouldn’t wish my erratic writing habits on anyone else.

14) whats your favourite ship?

Fitzier and Jared Dunn/Richard Hendricks will always have a very particular place in my heart.

15) whats a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

*looks guiltily* I don’t think, at this point, that I’ll ever finish my Good Omens fic where I trace Aziraphale and Crowley’s relationship through the lens of the classic Seven Deadly Sins. Looking at it now, it should actually have been a series. But either way.

16) What are your writing strengths.

I think I’m good at dialogue and character observation. When I concentrate, I think I can pull off unexpected but illuminating word choices.

17) what are your writing weaknesses?

I think I should push myself more as a writer. For example, I’ve only ever written one reasonably plotty longfic – my Terror BritPol AU – and I’ve never written a puzzle-piece, or something that requires detailed worldbuilding. I also tend to default to a particular limited-perspective third-person present-tense style (with the exception of my dialogue-only Terror WIP), and I’d like to branch out more.

18) what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in fic?

I’ve only written scraps of dialogue in other languages in fic. If there were an easy way for readers to get the translation as they read, it’s something I’d love to see more. But in general I think the priority should always be the flow of the story. Writers can – and should – try to get across a change in language or idiom in a multitude of ways.

19) what was the first fandom you wrote for.

Silicon Valley! I unfortunately have a thing for Horrible Little Gremlins and Long Boys who Crave Validation.

20) what's your favourite fic you've ever written?

Ouf. This one’s hard to answer. My immediate instinct is to go with my Terror BritPol AU because it’s the first longfic I actually brought in for the landing, but I also have a soft spot for my Silicon Valley fairytale Regency AU and a Silicon Valley fic about emotional abuse told from the abuser’s perspective. The last one wasn’t an easy one to write but I think what’s on page is close to my conception of it, which is rare for me.

in lieu of a commonplace book

didn’t I just...do this? the days start coming and they really don’t stop, huh

reading about halfway through with Under Heaven, and I remember why 18-year-old me really liked it. the sensory details, the poetry, the little narrative interjections and flashes of humor. less than halfway with the Sunne in Splendour, which is my bedtime ‘historical fiction to make you fall asleep’ read right now, which isn’t meant to be damning it with faint praise, it’s just...it does the job well. I’m definitely experiencing the ‘if I can’t finish it in a week or so, it’s gotten boring’ wall with some of these books from libby, e.g. the House of Spirits which I got through a good chunk of this summer and now have had to wait months to ever see again. I want to have intelligent, readerly things to say about all of these but the most I can muster is-- they have each been escapist in their own way and that’s what i’m after rn.

watching new overboard dropped and reminded me how much I enjoy pat gill. the bone salt. the victorian orphan kid. offer-code MBMBAM.

listening is this the year I get really into Beirut? like with the Mountain Goats, it’s always there in the background waiting for some inciting event to get me to just dive tf in. having scenic world on my marking playlist (17 undergrad projects down, three to go!) has given me so much life this week, its combination of jaunty/delicately melancholy trumpet, the looping and circular movement which makes for some energy in a repetitive task. this playlist is one of the few ever where I’ve actually been intentional about track order, and it works.

playing we played M’s birthday board game, PARKS, and y’all it is also extremely pretty and good and fun. I was confused about the objectives, but the game play isn’t actually complicated once you’re in it, and the art is incredible. feeling hashtag blessed in my quarantine pod! and no, I’m not just saying that bc I know they know how to read this blog! (there’s friendship, there’s love, and then there’s whatever the fuck you feel watching your non-tumblr-user housemates scroll back through two months of your blog and talk to you about every post they find exciting or cool or pretty or cute-- talk about the mortifying ordeal of being known, but also, it was weirdly flattering?! they...think the chaotic collage of me is worth reading...)

making I need to fix a lampshade the cat keeps knocking off. I did a preliminary fix back at the beginning of the pandemic, but now it has gotten to the point where I just need to permanently do something, or buy a new one. no pics because there will surely be unholy mingling of string and probably electrical tape? but whatever, I can’t live like this! the jade plant baby I planted has teeeeeny nubby leaves starting which is extremely fucking hopeful.

working on i’ve spent ~15 hours grading these students’ first midterm assignment this week, and so many of them took it in such good and thoughtful and smart directions, but god we need to get them some scholarly sources. that’s probably on me, to be absolutely unambiguous about what’s going to fly. had a mild panic on wednesday about keeping up my own reading while handling life, and of course handled that maturely by reading jack and taking a nap, so. back in the fields saddle on monday, I guess.

02. does your oc have dreams or nightmares? what are they like? is there a recurring one?

[i cheated this one because i answered it recently in another questionnaire]

— lyra’s had vivid dreams all her life, but not especially decipherable or significant; she’s never paid much attention to them as anything aside from the temporary amusements in her overactive mind while she sleeps. they have always been abstract, not memory based, fjnot anything to give her pause. she is deeply intuitive, but a prophetess she is not.as the holy war nears and joseph’s warnings ring in her ears, she has nightmares, but they’re not linear or tangible; they’re only emotions, an aching, an absence.

she sleeps very little after the collapse; she knows she’ll go to john in her dreams and she might not be able to pull herself out of them. she manages it, when it happens, but it’s like the wound in her side that keeps ripping open. she sleeps in his coat, that helps bring her back to consciousness in the physical realm; after she and joseph leave the bunker she sleeps on john’s grave. morbid, ly. morbid.

04. how does your oc view housework? do they absolutely hate it? do they enjoy having their surroundings neat and tidy or do they not notice?

— housework isn’t something lyra’s ever had to concern herself with; she grew up with a cleaning staff, she lived on the road for years afterward, she has shaggy and the other faithful to handle it for her at the ranch. truthfully, even if she didn’t have others to clean up after her, it wouldn’t be an huge priority; lyra likes to have nice surroundings, but she can live in chaos without a problem. john is far more concerned with it than she is.

06. what is your oc’s vocabulary like? does it match the way they talk? how would you describe their speech?

— lyra’s vocabulary is extensive and aligned with the way she speaks; it’s something she retains from her waspy new england origins interspersed with things she picked up abroad ( primarily england and france, where she lived and attended boarding school at different points ). it’s dated and distinctive; she likes it that way, but she’s been that way her entire life. it’s intentional to the image she projects, but it’s no longer an affectation; she couldn’t speak otherwise if she wished to, she speaks in her speech patterns.

08. is your oc more likely to follow instructions exactly, throw them out and figure it out on their own, or make it all up? what are the results like?

— it depends on the situation. if it’s something straightforward and instructions are readily available, she won’t not follow them out of spite, but she won’t seek them out; she’s impulsive and reactionary in virtually every area of life, meaning she’s more likely to rush in and sort things as she goes along. it usually works out well enough.

16. if your oc could only eat one thing for the rest of their life (while miraculously not suffering from malnutrition), what would it be? does this match their favourite food?

— given that she’s been deprived of it living in hope county, she would say sushi. she would spend the rest of her life mourning the loss of baked breads, any sort of flaky pastry, and fresh fruits.

18. how charitable is your oc? or are they more stingy with their resources and money?

— lyra is extremely charitable with those who are not among those she deems undeserving; she is generally extremely charitable with the belongings of those she deems undeserving. call it a reallocation of resources.

20. does your oc have any pleasure that embarrasses them so they keep it secret? or are they open about all the things they enjoy?

— lyra is virtually impossible to embarrass save for one thing; having spent most of her life believing that love and romance were things unattainable to her, they’re unfamiliar to her, she doesn’t know what she’s doing, and she’s mortified. she’s deeply passionate and a romantic at heart, sharing herself with someone and loving them and being loved and accepted in return is the only thing she’s ever truly wanted, so it’s the greatest and purest source of joy in her life, but it’s a mortifying ordeal for her to process.

30. what topics does your oc know the most about? are these obvious or would these be surprising to others?

— the most surprising ( not in actuality if one thinks about it, but surprising on the surface ) topic she has extensive knowledge about is in human biology and anatomy. she knows how much to dose someone of a toxic substance to kill them and how long it will take them to die; she knows how much arsenic a person can ingest and make contact with and where and how it naturally occurs; she knows where nerves are bundled; she knows what can be removed or rearranged without fatality; she knows where to cut; she knows where to bleed; she knows how to kill, and she knows how to prolong life.

40. are there any habits your oc has picked up from people around them? do they know where they’re from? does your oc try to stop themselves from doing it?

— not particularly; lyra is a social chameleon in the sense that she is able to insinuate herself into most situations, but she isn’t one for mimicry; she never blends in, she hides in plain sight — people notice that she is different in the ways she wishes them to perceive and not in the ways that truly matter. not in the ways that would direct suspicion her way; on the contrary, she is so much the center of everything, so much a conspicuous presence, that the concept she’s undercover or engaging in subterfuge appears absurd. if she picks something up, it’s intentional.

This post is long and I do not apologize.

Okay y’all quiz time! I’m curious, pay attention to me. Bored? Me? Never. IkeSen, IkeRev, IkeVamp or all three (max out the word limit, do it!). Feel free to answer all of these questions or whichever ones you like.

I’ll go first and subject myself to the mortifying ordeal of being known so I hope you will do the same!

I’m gonna answer about IkeSen!

1. When did you start playing?

I have absolutely no concept of time and cannot remember dates but it was between Kenshin and Mitsunari’s routes.

2. Who’s route did you play first/why?

Nobunaga’s route. I knew enough about the game to know his was one of the original routes and I wanted to start the game from ‘the beginning.’

He interested me and I could tell he was just enough of a 'bad boy’ for me to fall for. I am, unfortunately, cripplingly attracted to bastards.

That’s why I play otome games instead of dating real men.

3. Before you started playing/towards the beginning who was your favourite guy and why? Do you have one ultimate guy or absolutely cannot choose between multiple. Kinda ties in with questions 2, 4 & 5 I guess.

Though I liked Sasuke, I’ve never been hugely romantically interested in him, I guess my favourite guy (romantically) has always been Nobunaga. And that’s terrible.

4. If their route had been out when you first started playing would you have picked somebody else? Who? Why?

*Naruto voice* SASUKE!!!! He seemed interesting, handsome, funny(ish), KIND, and was the only one who wanted to help me.

He was also the only character in the prologue who wasn’t a jerk or Mitsunari (never been attracted to the ‘gentle angel’ type character) so he really seemed like the only option... but his route wasn’t out and thus I was forced to pick Nobunaga like I’d originally been planning anyway.

5. If that guy’s route is out now did it live up to your expectations? Why/why not?

Sasuke? Yes in both a good and bad way. The route was more interesting and entertaining than I’d expected it to be but I was not particularly into him before, I did not expect his route to change that and it didn’t.

6. Your favourite guy NOW. Is it the same person as it was at the beginning? If not, who is it? Why? How many favourite guys have you had? Do you keep changing your mind or are you irrationally devoted to one guy? And I mean romantically, not guys you like for other reasons.

Still. Nobunaga. Send. Help.

7. Did a guy you expected to like disappoint you? Who? Why?

Masamune. I never thought he would be my all time favourite but I expected him to be one of my more liked guys both romantically and just as an interesting character. He isn’t. But it’s not like I hate the guy or anything he’s just not a fave.

8. Did a guy you never thought you’d fall for blow you away? Who? Why? Even if he didn’t ‘sweep you off your feet’ was there someone/a route you liked a lot that you didn’t expect to?

Route: Mitsunari. His route just kept me entertained, there weren’t bits where I lost interest or anything.

Person: Yukimura. I actually really liked him a lot in his route. Sweet, cute, romantic, interesting. Which is weird because I used to (and still do!!!) see him as one of the more boring characters.

Me, before *reading a different guy’s route, sees Yukimura*: Boring.

9. Does one of your favourite guys not fit your ‘type?’ (Eg; your fave guys are Kenshin, Shakespeare and also Fenrir). Even if you’re only answering for one game, feel free to include guys from other games for this question.

Favourite IkeVamp guy: Shakespeare, fave IkeSen guy: Nobunaga, fave IkeRev guy: Lancelot... and Fenrir. Jerk, jerk, jerk... Fenrir.

10. Are you a romantic person or a dramatic person?

Dramatic. Even when I don’t want to be.

11. If you’ve read both a romantic ending and a dramatic ending for the same character is there any where you noticed one being significantly better than the other?

Kenshin’s dramatic ending is so much better than his romantic one it’s not even funny.

12. Do you feel any character is significantly less loved than they deserve? Why do you think that?

Stop sleeping on Hideyoshi! Cowards!

13. Do you feel any character is significantly MORE loved than they deserve? Why do you think that?

Kennyo. Mostly because I don’t much care for him at all so any love is Too Much.

Also Masamune, but again, it’s not like I HATE Masamune. I just don’t get the hype. Everyone’s different I guess.

14. What routes have you read?

Nobunaga: Dramatic, romantic, eternal. Kenshin, Ieyasu, Mitsunari, Yukimura: Dramatic, romantic. Hideyoshi, Sasuke: Romantic. Shingen, Masamune: dramatic.

15. WHO’S ROUTE ARE YOU ON RIGHT NOW?! What do you think of it? Have you read it before? Etc.

Mitsuhide’s. Predictably I have not read it before. I’m enjoying it but not as much as I thought I would. Mitsuhide’s was the route I was looking forward to most so anything less than complete perfection would be a letdown. And while it’s good, it’s not complete perfection.

The main character is my real issue. She seems more childlike than I ever remember her being. Is it just me?

Also tying into that, this is the only route I can remember her being consistently referred to as a ‘girl.’ Never a ‘woman’ always a girl. I know it happens SOMETIMES in other routes, Masamune calls you ‘lass,’ etc. But this time both the narrative and the characters seem allergic to the word ‘woman’ or something. That with her personality infantilize her a bit too much for me.

16. Fave route? Is it your favorite guy’s route or is there just a plot that you REALLY F*CKING LOVE even if the guy is not your favorite?

I actually really enjoyed Mitsunari’s route but I’m not romantically interested in him at all. Hideyoshi’s route was also a favourite.

17. Who’s route are you most looking forward to? Why? Again, you can answer for any game.

Shakespeare from IkeVamp. As for IkeSen... I’m not. Mitsuhide was the one I wanted. Don’t really like Kennyo, pretty neutral about the new guys.

18. Which guy are you most like? Why?

Jonah Clemence from IkeRev. But from IkeSen, Ieyasu. Because I’m salty. Though he’s really smart and I’m a complete dumbass.

19. Three guys/routes you love the most, why?

1. Nobunaga: bastard man, love of my life. The main character in his route does almost exactly what I’d do in her situation so it was a believable romance for me and he’s someone I could actually see myself falling for if I was magically transported into IkeSen rather than some of the others who I like but only because its a game and if I met them in real life we’d probably hate each other.

2. Shingen, another character I never expected to love, not big on flirts either, but he won me over. Still not sure why.

3. Hideyoshi. Just a damn good guy and a good route.

19. Three guys you like the most if they’re not the ones above, not necessarily the guys you fell in love with, just characters you like.

Number 1 guy is still Nobunaga both romantically and platonically.

2. Ieyasu. We’re too similar for a relationship between us to work but I adore him. That’s probably why

3. Kenshin. Funny 50% of the time, heartbreaking 50% of the time, interesting 100% of the time also just pretty to look at. An incredibly complex character with an interesting personality/relationships. But if you were to put a gun to my head and say “date Kenshin or die” I would say “pull the trigger.” Not romantically into him (or Mitsunari, or Kennyo) at all.

19. LEAST favourite three guys. Why?

20. Any other romantic visual novels, books, games, songs, movies, tv shows or other media you would recommend?

The psy-changeling series by Nalini Singh. A paranormal romance series. There are like, 20 books and still going with it’s own worldbuilding so it’s not light reading but I thoroughly enjoyed the books and I hope others will too. It’s written in English but you can also get it in at least a handful of other languages, Spanish and German at least.

Also the song Fire meets Gasoline by Sia is Nobunaga x MC’s song.

21. MEEEE!!!!! Is there anything I’ve said that you totally agree with/blatantly disagree with? What/Why?

Well I can’t really answer this but please go ahead!

22. If you do read IkeSen, how do YOU feel about Nobunaga?

I’ve made my opinion pretty clear. If you actually answer any of these questions please feel free to put in your answer what guy/route YOU would like other people’s opinion on, that way we can get a bunch of different opinions on different guys.
