RexObi Week Part 5/7 - First / Previous / Next

Day 5: Skinny Dipping Track: 'Naked' - X Ambassadors (Spotify / YouTube)

It had never been hard to convince Rex to go swimming. He had a few preferences, the beach they once again crossed being one of them, but at the promise of shelved stone and clear water elsewhere Rex had stayed in step with Obi-Wan back towards the caves. And truly that was all Obi-Wan had really planned, just some time swimming somewhere a bit more private, with some food packed if they choose to simply enjoy the upper ledges afterward. 

At least it was until they got there, and the universe had other ideas.

"This is a new one," Rex pondered from behind him. Obi-Wan nodded excitedly, pulling his shirt over his head and slowly turning to take in the cave. It had a wider opening directly facing the ocean, sunlight streaming in to show multiple waterfalls glittering near the back that had helped shape the depth of the cave pool. All of it was smoothed, even the tunnel they were exiting was seamlessly dipping below gentle waters that Obi-Wan was already stepping into, enjoying how it felt on bare feet this time. 

"More just for the chance to swim then anything. I quite enjoyed-"

Obi-Wan was going to say something, he was sure of it, but as his slow turn brought him back to facing Rex he was stopped by sudden lips on his. It left him blinking a few times, hands still too tangled in his shirt to reach out properly and leaving him rather sad when that meant Rex pulled away only a breath later. 

"Rex, wha-" Obi-Wan started to ask, ever curious to what had prompted the kiss, only to make a swift decision and snap his mouth shut. 

"Oh General, I think Cody may actually be a tad impressed," Rex smiled as the question died on Obi-Wan's still parted lips, taking the mans shirt without any difficulty and turning back into the tunnel. "If he could get over the part where you were kissing his vod'ika, anyway."

Obi-Wan scoffed slightly, fighting the usual inevitable blush when Rex was that forward. He loved when the clone felt so emboldened to make the first move, to reach out for him first, as it was a sign and reminder that he was comfortable enough with Obi-Wan to take a bit of what he wants, especially after so long not doing so. Rex was born a clone and raised a solider. To just take what he wanted wasn't a part of who Rex was. It wasn't a part of rank or regulation, a part of being numbered or achieving sameness. None of the Jedi Obi-Wan knew thought of the clones as the same, especially beneath the surface, and were even key in requesting the clones be otherwise. To be named, to talk back, to question the Jedi. Because they needed to be. Obi-Wan needed to be.

So seeing Rex now, smiling slyly as he turned to set the food further in the tunnel and remove his own shoes, Obi-Wan wasn't at all curious why; just lost in overwhelmed awe of how. How he could have ever been so lucky, how he could have ever deserved all of this, how close everything had come to simply ending and how by some Force sworn miracle it hadn't. How instead he was here, with the man he loved, in the quiet of an afternoon-

-falling backwards with a yelp into the water.

One second Obi-Wan had been lost in thought, backing up further to slowly adjust to the water, and in the next his foot suddenly had nothing solid beneath it. The resounding splash was drowned out of his own ears by the rush of water and his own momentary flailing as he registered how it was much colder when dunking oneself and he had not been properly prepared to not be breathing. He came back up sputtering, hair pasted over his eyes and the sound of Rex's laughter getting through to him before anything else. 

"Well," Obi-Wan coughed, getting his feet beneath him and standing now waist deep in water. "I definitely don't think he would be impressed now."

The Jedi hadn't bothered to brush away his hair, finding he would in fact like to hide his reddened face behind it a bit longer. But alas, his embarrassment was often described as an endearment in the eyes of his clone, and he couldn't do anything but look meekly upward when warm hands parted the wet strands.

"Jedi Master and High General Obi-Wan Kenobi," Rex stated, with all the authority of someone who held every secret in the the palm of their hand. "You, are a fool."

And this time, as the laughter echoed around them, it was Obi-Wan pushing forward for a kiss, unable to stop himself from wanting to capture Rex's crooked grin with his own lips.

Lips that smiled together, around loving and familiar quiet jabs, while they moved together in the water. Though it didn't take long for Obi-Wan to begin kissing a bit more firmly, broad hands beginning to snake their way under the swim shirt Rex preferred to keep on and pulling them closer together.

"Sir," the clone now chuckled a bit breathlessly. "What are you-"

"Rex," Obi-Wan cut off, voice suddenly lower and mouth moving more on to Rex's jaw. "I'm being spontaneous."

And to make it clear exactly how spontaneous he was being, Obi-Wan backed away slightly and pulled the shirt up and over Rex's head, trapping the clones arms for a moment just long enough to kiss him again before tossing the shirt toward the tunnel.

A bit more smothered laughter as Obi-Wan began kissing the newly exposed skin, and his hands smoothed over Rex's lean flanks. The clone was built for movement, endurance, though his waist cut tighter then any other clone Obi-Wan had seen shirtless, his flexibility astounding and even besting Obi-Wan's. Rex was deadly, he could feel it in the flex of back muscles and the minute movements of the hips his hands travelled down over, but he was beautiful. From a slightly crooked bottom tooth in his iconic smile, every small mark and scar on honeyed skin, the slightly growing golden curls he could just start to run his fingers through, all of it, beautiful. A true treasure to Obi-Wan, and he treated it as such when he began to dip his fingers under the tight waistband.

"O- Obi-Wan?" Rex didn't exactly ask the question, but Obi-Wan answered anyway.

"I love you Rex." So easy to say now, so close he had come to never saying it again. "And I am going to show you, like this, right here."

And, trusting Rex to stop him as always whenever they explored something new, Obi-Wan pushed further, lips travelling down Rex's neck and collarbone while his hands pushed away the fabric. Rex's own hands had found their way to his hair, a mix of wavy strands partially dried that made for the perfect thing to grab hold of and cause Obi-Wan's own breath to hitch in his throat.

"Yes sir."

something that absolutely changed the way i approach goals was realising that it's never the thing that you want, but rather the feelings that you believe it will give you. without striving for those feelings, the thing is not going to make you happy.

for example, until i was eighteen i would daydream about having a Real Best Friend. like i wanted my disney channel bff you know?? and getting older felt a lot like 'okay it'll happen when i get to secondary school' 'okay it'll happen when i get to sixth form' 'okay it'll happen in fandom' and it just. never did. i kept getting sucked into friendships that made me feel shit about myself while all the people that seemed to want to be close to me would, for some reason, make me feel uncomfortable. but it was at the point where i was like, okay. what do i really want from a friend? is it the actual object of A Friend or is it what i feel like A Friend would allow me to do? so instead of looking for that Real Best Friend, i started allowing myself to feel like i deserved a Real Best Friend. i stopped deleting my messages even if i thought they were embarrassing, and i stopped worrying that people would think im annoying if i messaged them first, and i stopped being scared of being 'too much' whenever i shared my interests.

and you know what? within two months i GOT that Real Best Friend. within a few more i had Multiple of those Real Best Friends. it's been three years since that shift in my life and it's like All my friends are like my disney channel bff friends -- they genuinely care about me, they genuinely like me as a person, they invite me to their houses, they cook for me, they buy me random things when they think of me, and most of all they make me love myself more, when for my entire life the trade off for a friendship always felt like i had to hate myself a little.

idk. i just think it's worth remembering that the feeling of something is the most important thing to strive for. a thing without feeling is nothing

I do! ^^ Though admittedly my practice has been a little bit dormant as of late because I sort of fell out of habit after An Event which was a Bit Disruptive to My Life lol. But I guess I kind of dabble in a bit of everything? I dunno if I could pin myself down to just one kind of practice yet, I still sort of consider myself a Baby Witch. But I really like making little spelljars and casting candle spells and things of the like, and I've been trying to learn tarot for a while now! I also really like making and drawing sigils... For a while part of the joy for me has been just Learning New Things.

This is my last post before I head off on my ten-day minimal-internet tidalpunk adventure (expect pics when I return!) so I thought I’d make a nice long list-type thing for all you solarpunks before I go.

Now, this might not seem very cheerful compared to my other topics - certainly all the people I’ve brought this up with irl have acted like I’m being alarmist and depressing, but I don’t see it that way. I view it as being prepared and maximising your ability to keep yourself and your community safe, which is after all what solarpunk is all about!

So without further ado, here is my *extremely idealised* suggestion for an emergency kit list to help you cope with increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events. The goal is that with the supplies in this bag you could either shelter safely in place or get up and go, and be well supplied in either case to care for yourself and share with those in need. In fact, in both scenarios you would hopefully be able to temporarily ‘start from scratch’ in terms of infrastructure should the frameworks of society around you no longer be reliable. I based mine off suggestions by climate scientist Kendra Pierre-Louis (you can check out her advice on the ‘Unnatural Disasters’ episode of the How To Save A Planet Podcast), but yours might look subtly different depending on who you are, what you can afford/carry, and where you live.

Emergency kit list:

-Big hiking rucksack, to keep everything in

-Sleeping bag

-A small portable tent and camping stove

-A penknife or multi tool

-Matches or a lighter

-Kindling or firestarters - I use wood wool balls held together with wax

-Torch (with up to date batteries!)

-Towels

-Non-perishable or long-life foods, such as protein bars, rice cakes/breadsticks/crackers, dried fruit, bagged nuts/seeds, crisps, tinned soup, pot noodles

-A seedbomb of edible plants (you can get some for slightly excessive prices here in the UK, otherwise they can be made fairly easily by combining clay, straw, paper or flour with the desired seeds)

-Two large water bottles (600-650ml) and a water bladder

-A water purifier (preferably one capable of filtering out both natural pathogens like bacteria and viruses and synthetic pollutants like heavy metals and PFAS)

-A collapsible bucket

-A first aid kit, including plasters, bandages, sterile wipes, hand sanitiser, latex gloves, antiseptic/disinfectant, (K)N95 masks to filter out particulates (whether ash or pathogens), painkillers, antihistamines, rehydration sachets, anti-emetics and anti-diarrhoeals, steroid creams, aloe vera gel, iodine tablets in case of radiation, and any medication you regularly take (including epipens and inhalers if needed)

-A pair of goggles to protect your eyes from air pollution such as smog, wildfire smoke, etc

-Toothpaste tablets and a spare toothbrush

-Period supplies (pack these even if you don’t get periods - someone you run into might need them)

-A solar charger

-A satellite phone

-A mechanical handheld fan, with working batteries, to keep you cool in extreme heat

-A magnetic heat belt for extra warmth

-A change of clothes, including a sun hat, a scarf, woolly hat and gloves for extreme cold, and waterproofs (plus an umbrella!) for wet conditions

-Pliers or secateurs for cutting through dense debris or vegetation

-Some strong, climbing-grade rope

-A trowel (for planting and digging up but also for burying…waste 😅 - a long-term wild camping scenario isn’t infeasible here)

-Your passport and any other documents (marriage certificate, adoption papers, savings bonds if you’re like a hundred years old) that you might need if fleeing your country becomes a necessity

-As much cash as you are comfortable withdrawing/leaving lying around your house/carrying with you in an emergency

-A personal locator beacon is a radio-transmitter that signals your location to emergency services via satellite. These tend to have a 24-hour battery life, so if you foresee being in any way ‘stranded’ for longer then a useful trick is to switch it on for one hour each day, and then turn it off again. This not only saves power but shows emergency services that there is conscious intention involved, proving you’re still alive and lucid

-Some things to keep your spirits up, like a chocolate bar and your favourite/funniest book

-It’s worth having a sturdy pair of hiking boots for if you have to pick up the bag and go

Obviously this list is super extra, a bunch of these things are prohibitively expensive, and some items would need periodic replacement if a long time passed without the necessity of using the emergency kit. You could also likely build a fairly functional emergency kit with only a fraction of these supplies, I’m just trying to anticipate every eventuality here.

It’s up to you whether you think the investment is worth it - it’s a big outlay for a possible zero return. Personally I think it’s at least somewhat worth it as extreme weather is only going to happen more often and have more serious consequences, and preparedness turns what could be a disaster into an inconvenience, often saving money in the long run. But it will depend on the relative likelihood of severe weather events in your local area. It’s also worth saying that these work for ostensibly non-climate related problems, from a power cut in your town to an authoritarian coup in your government to your house falling down! It isn’t just for wildfires or tornadoes.

Over the next few months I’m hoping to slowly build up the aspects of the kit that are affordable and accessible to me, with the aim of being able to keep myself safe and aid my neighbours should disaster strike.

the opinion for today is that john’s never really needed to be fixed and pairing him with any character for the sole purpose of “fixing” him belittles both the character and john himself. john does care a lot for people, but a lot of people want to ‘fix’ him in ships when in reality, he does care. he can be a great boyfriend who understands boundaries ( as shown with kit, for example, and dani ), but he does run away when he thinks that significant other might be in danger because of him and he’s aware of that fact ( like with oliver, in the newer constantine: the hellblazer run ).

is he an asshole? absolutely. but does he need to be ‘fixed’? no. he’s fine. he’s a decent guy, who’s willing to do just about anything for his friends and feels immense guilt if anything happens to them. he’s never needed to be a hero. he doesn’t want to be a hero. don’t force his hand into being one in the dc universe. keep him his little chaotic neutral self. has he saved the world? yes, but it’s more of a “well, no one else was going to do it” mentality and at one point, he only saves the world because there’s a lack of cigarettes and the shipments of cigarettes weren’t coming in, but that’s also because of his “well, i keep saving the world, and it keeps ending. there’s no point anymore”. poor guy, honestly.

anyways, in sum, i don’t like the whole “they can fix him” ships with john. i think it’s demeaning. can someone be with john without needing to fix him please. thanks.

Tim (24)

Says his worst trait is his spitefulness (he actively rejects the idea of mending his relationships with the older members of the family and this causes him to also lack good relationships with the younger ones)

Thinks his worst trait is his obsessiveness (similar to Cass, if he gets fixated on a task or idea he will neglect everything else in his life in order to dedicate more time to it. Unlike Cass, he will almost never be dragged away from it unless Pierrot snatches control of the body and forces them to take care of themself.)

His worst trait actually is how manipulative he is (the KING of guilt-tripping and using people’s emotions against them. He’ll do whatever he needs to do to get what he wants, he’s not above crocodile tears. And he will do it to whoever he needs (or wants) to with little care for how his actions impact others.)

Pierrot (Insists: “Age doesn’t apply to me! And even if it did, I'd probably be the oldest. Or the youngest! I’d never be a middle child, though.” Mental assessments by the Bats have put him around 21, with a margin of error of 3 years. Pierrot has called this “blatant character assassination by my eternal rival!”)

Says his worst trait is that he is an irredeemable psychopath without any regard for the wellbeing of others (this is a lie and everyone who's important to him understands this). 

Thinks his worst trait is his parasitic nature (he literally would not exist had Tim not suffered the way he did. Plus he is a living reminder of one of the worst things that happened to many of his loved ones. He is a parasite injected into a functional person's body and contributes to his continued suffering. This is also a largely incorrect judgement of himself, caused by his actual worst trait.)

His worst trait actually is his limited sense of self (he doesn’t really know who he is outside of ‘inheritor to the legacy of the Joker (a man he despises yet also views as a father)’ and ‘chip in Tim’s brain that became sentient’. He slowly develops an identity over the course of his life and relationships with other people, but he lacks the foundations of identity that most people have. Pierrot will often almost become a caricature of himself and what others perceive him to be because it's the only person he knows how to be. This causes wild swings in how he behaves and relates to others, sometimes to the detriment of himself and others.)

Dick (17) 

Says his worst trait is his clinginess (he is a very extraverted person who likes to be around others, which mixed with his fear of abandonment after his parents died means that if he goes a few days without seeing/talking to a friend he will get very anxious.)

Thinks his worst trait is his anger issues (he gets ticked off very easily and will explode on people. He’s kind at his core and is usually very nice, but he has a temper that can escalate significantly. Spoiler (and later Twist) help him channel this anger into something positive.)

Barbara (18)

Says her worst trait is her disability (internalized ableism, she thinks of herself as less valuable than the other Bats because she cannot be out there in the capes like they can. She will grow out of this as she matures and as she learns how invaluable her support for the team is.)

Her worst trait actually is her overly-independent nature (In an attempt to overcompensate for everything she can no longer do, she has resolved to do literally everything that she possibly can without any help from others. This results in many instances where she either takes on too much and winds up not being able to fully realize any of her tasks or where she makes her life and the lives of others significantly harder by refusing help when offered/not asking for it when she needs it.)

Damian (16)

Says his worst trait is his perfectionism (he is overly critical of both himself and others, taking any flaw or problem and amplifying it to an absurd degree. This is due in part to his life with the LoA (where even a brief misstep could lead to death), in part to how others treated him initially as Spoiler (any flaw was fixated on and used as a reason to either mistrust him or portray him as unworthy of the mantle), and in part due to the fact that he is Bruce’s son (the only person with worse perfectionism problems than Damian). Gradually, Damian has improved in this regard but it’s still a massive barrier to both his own happiness and his relationships with others.)

Says his worst trait is his definitely-real secret evil side (says this as a ‘my dad is a villain so who knows??’ joke)

Thinks his worst trait is his impulsivity in his words (Sometimes he will crack a joke or say a remark without thinking it through, leading to a LOT of hurt feelings and drama. He’ll say something without thinking it through and wind up seeming insensitive. This isn’t done because of malice, rather because Duke is someone who’s quick to act and speak. But while the mantle of Insight and his awakening powers have helped him with his actions, they do not always help with his loose tongue. As such, Duke gains an unfair reputation in the media as an instigator and will accidentally cause family drama through what he says.)

Jason (14)

Says his worst trait is his bad manners (he grew up on the streets and has no idea how rich-people society works, which he’s pretty insecure about considering he’s now the youngest kid of Bruce freaking Wayne). 

Thinks his worst trait is his reactiveness (Jason never got the privilege of planning ahead for various events in his life, so he instead needed to rely on being swift and harsh in how he could react to situations. It’s saved his life on multiple occasions and helps significantly in his role as Spoiler, but it can also lead to extreme overreactions (accidentally causing kidnapping scare after Jason ran away following a fight with Dick) and a struggle to plan things out ahead of time. As he grows more secure in his place in the family and in life, this trait will lessen but never fully dissipate.)

But what was a greater challenge was finding what would make their lives and those of others worse. #what would I hate about this person if I knew them IRL? What would I first suggest they get therapy for?
