Random Children's Literature Thought

I don't know why, but yesterday I had a weird thought Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH and it's sequels. To begin with I want to quote something from the TVTropes page:

Let's capture some rats and make them hyper intelligent. Then we should make cages that they can physically open and then put written instructions on how to open the cages on them. And heck, while we're at it we should also teach them how to read.

Now, fortunately, the Rats ended adopting a fairly benevolent guiding philosophy and because of that, according to the sequels, are choosing not to breed as often as rats can breed. but imagine if they hadn't? Imagine if they had adopted a more vindictive philosophy? We might have had an actual war on our hands! And it would all have been the fault of these people's incompetence.

Of course, the Rats are benevolent, and are deliberately trying to avoid starting trouble, which makes the response to finding their colony a little disturbing. Like, the NIMH guys know how smart the Rats are. They know that they're as intelligent as people. And they don't even TRY to talk to them, or even capture them alive, they go straight to poison gas! After that, they absolutely would be justified in declaring war on humanity!

And speaking of, let's talking about the fact that, if we include the sequels, the Rats have successfully outwitted these bozos three separate times.

To sum up, these people need to be fired, and possibly go to jail.

it's a good moment in the secret of nimh when mrs. brisby is captured by the fitzgibbons' kid and works her own way out of the cage but i like the book version just as much when justin returns to get her out. to me it's a way of him "returning the favor" to jonathan for basically the exact same dilemma justin and the rats faced and would have probably died because of if not for the mice
