i may have posted about this before but i love the vibes of our household's collective self-hosted calibre library, containing:
a lot of fanfiction (mostly from ao3, but also including Historically Significant titles such as cassandra clare's draco trilogy)
a lot of danmei epubs and pdfs (i was largely responsible for these)
random books i saw someone recommend or discuss and immediately downloaded off libgen before i could forget about them (e.g. The Wizard and the Prophet, No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive)
english translations of classical chinese prose and poems, from my ongoing "studying for the civil service exams" phase
a lot of random pdfs i downloaded off libgen for naruto fanfiction research purposes, carefully tagged and classified
a big pile of sewing patterns, books about therapy, and cookbooks, courtesy of @combat-epistemologist
rulebooks for about five different TTRPGs
robotics papers
the first four volumes of the bell system technical journal (i downloaded the entire print run off of the internet archive but i only uploaded + edited metadata on four volumes before getting bored)

City C, University P -- the way modern chinese names places
Alright, you may have come across such initial-based namings in books, danmei and other cnovels: City S, University P, C市 (City C), S大 (University S)
-- is it lazy translation? why aren't they giving places actual names?
A tad bit of informal history below:
When did it start?
As a person very much inexperienced in chinese historical literature, I couldn't say for sure either. But what I do know, is that it has been in writing since the 20th century (around the 1920s and after). You see renowned writers of that time like Lu Xun 鲁迅 and Zhu Ziqing 朱自清 using these initials.
(I don't have concrete examples in mind, so I'm flipping about what I have around me, and Zhu Ziqing and Lu Xun's books happen to be near me so -- let me use their works as examples of the day.)
There's this novella Lu Xun wrote, with a protagonist which he named 阿Q (read as "Ah-Q"). I also see in his short stories that he named a dog S, a side character 小D (Little D), and a city S城 (City S).
Zhu Ziqing tends to write more about realistic things that happen in his life in the form of short writings, and for that reason he uses initials way less. He did refer to a person by "Y" in one of the pieces though.
So what are they doing?
So around that time of Lu Xun (we're in the republican era) there's a movement called the May Fourth Movement, and out of the movement it spurred in the literary realm the New Culture Movement. I honestly don't want to go into the details and confuse everyone with my inexperience here, what is worth noting is that they began promoting "modern chinese" (白话 bái huà) over "classical chinese" (文言 wén yán). "Modern chinese" is the kind of chinese you read in cnovels and everywhere else nowadays.
And in this movement, they also advocated quite a lot of western ideas. This is where they proposed a complete romanisation of chinese characters, and probably to do with this, in their new modern chinese writings, they started using anglicised phrases like "City Y" and "Dog S".
All movements are controversial, their failure or success is controversial, I really don't want to get into past history so let's move on.
What they use now.
When journalling one's own experiences, important places and all that, obviously real places and names are used. Otherwise, in fiction, alphabetic initials are used in place, likely to 1. distance fiction from real life, and also I suppose nowadays 2. to avoid heated topics. For instance china may be referred to as 华国 (Huá guó), which probably makes things less sensitive and easier to handle.
again i really don't want to get into nations and stuff. let me literary-this meta out in peace.
How can I understand where means where?
It took me a while to get used to them, basically sometimes you can guess the place -- City B may be Beijing, C could be Chongqing, S could be Shanghai -- the big metropolitan cities. University T and P (or Q and B) would be Tsinghua and Peking University.
As for the other names, when they say University A or High School No. 1 it usually means the top school in the area, because (at least for high schools) that's how quite a number of schools are named. If you couldn't tell what the letter represents, it's probably a random one.
additional note: these initials are only used in modern and futuristic sci-fi novels (at least from what I've seen so far!) using letters in historical or historical fantasy ones would break the fourth wall quite a bit for me haha.
Addendum
See Guardian article linked in the comments should you be interested.
Some points of note, made up places have been used in other fiction too, to avoid trespassing geographical localities and cultures aboriginal to a group of people;
Russian novels also have used mysterious initials -- "in the town of P", this is in the 19th and 20th century -- so it may well have come from Russia instead of literature under greco-roman influence (excuse the terrible description) -- but likely it did result from the movements, that's what instigated modern chinese writing in the first place.
(yeah it's on my lack of russian classics perusal -- i'll rectify that some time.)

confession: IDK if this is a danmei fandom thing in general or specific to MXTX, but the focus on “what MXTX wanted to say” in fandom discourse has me like ???? not saying that authorial intent is irrelevant, but people act like her word is decisive evidence for whatever point they wanna make and it reminds me so much of early-2000s fandom with its emphasis on being “more canon” that I can’t help but side-eye
yo anon you are speaking directly to my heart and soul with this ask because this is my biggest source of frustration when engaging in any kind of protracted discourse with the antis. like... this continuously gets thrown back at me as some sort of 'gotcha' rebuttal.
"well mxtx says--" okay??? since when does modern literary criticism actually lend that much weight to authorial intent?? [edit: to clarify, I probably should have said 'word of god' here rather than 'authorial intent'; see the notes etc.]
"what we're doing isn't literary criticism tho--" isn't it? I'm sorry, is it only literary criticism if we publish our takes and take-downs of our peers in a journal? ...that's not a bad idea, actually, I would pay cash money to read a publication of text-based analysis of mdzs. 🤔

Weekly Book Roundup July 2
Anime and the Art of Adaptation by Dani Cavallaro [DROPPED]
I don’t know where to start with this. I’ve never read a worse book? It’s written in an academic style but clearly the reason it got published as a book is that no self-respecting academic journal would publish this. The concepts are interesting but it is UNREADABLE. The author writes like a high schooler whose assignment is to cram as many dictionary words into each individual sentence as possible. Literally gave me a headache to read. -1000/10
The Underneath by Kathi Appelt
Two of my cats died within the past year, one of which was a momma cat we had rescued after she had been abandoned on the streets whilst pregnant by her previous family... so this is rather melancholy to read, since I can’t stop thinking about her. The entire book is written in one of those pervasive sadness ways, but also in a melodic style - it must be great to hear, I think, and the story isn’t about sadness at all, though sad things do happen. I want to rip the other half of old gar’s face off. It’s a slow read but I’m enjoying it, and I really really enjoyed the 1000 years ago bits.
The Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin [Finished]
I finally read a Le Guin! And it was just as good as promised. A huge part of my enjoyment was how much it reminded me of Tolkien’s works actually. Little shared details like ea, the little girl who carries the big jewel to safety, and the woman who turns into a gull... of course these in turn are probably in conversation with older stories, but still.
The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. Le Guin [Finished]
Immediately after finishing a wizard I had to read book 2, and then I kinda devoured it. It’s SO GOOD. No wonder it’s ppls fave book. 10/10, second big rec of the summer after the imperial radch
The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison [Finished]
This book reads like a danmei that isn’t a danmei and feels like a silmarillion fic despite very much not being a silmarillion fic. In other words I really, really, really enjoyed it. Its the second book after the imperial radch I wanted to re-read immediately after I started it. Indeed, I nearly did, but my two piles of unread books haunt me. Also, it must be good to forget a bit so I can savor it on second reread methinks.

oh thanks :) this is gonna be fun~ (sorry I’m late!!) Thanks @flopsy-art
favourite colour: purple!!!! kind of clear from the colour of my blog tbh lol
last song you listened to: UrbanAngel1999 by Thomas Headon (the one from heartstopper haha)
last movie you watched: UHHH not sure, haven’t been watching many of late... probably my rewatch of Into the Spiderverse?
last series you watched: Heartstopper (and it shows lol)
sweet, spicy or savoury: I tend to go for sweet (I definitely have a sweet tooth) but I love spicy and savoury just as much !!!
coffee or tea: tea all the way !!! I’m such a slut for tea I did my chemistry project in high school on the caffeine levels in tea (I also adore traditional chinese tea) tho I can drink iced coffee and the occasional caramel latte
three ships: gonna just go ahead and put the main shipping ones for now, otherwise I’ll be here all day (multi-shipper alert)
but uh, dinluke (but like. minus the toxicity y’all I’m in my own little dinluke AU bubble okay), codywan (tho I do ship obitine too, bi obi for the win), wangxian (the danmei pining got to me ok, plus I speak chinese I know exactly what those fuckers saying when they confess and so help me why is chinese such a romantic language y’all fr)
first ever ship: oh boy I’m going to be exposed here HHHHH
ok fine: Jack Frost/Elsa (yes the fucking animated characters okay) (I also now realize Elsa is a bit of a lesbian but case in point, I was like. 11, okay?)
OR Percy Jackson/Annabeth Chase but idk which came first, probably Percabeth iirc (thank god)
currently working on: The Starlight Path (my dinluke prince Romeo and Juliet war AU set in the Clone Wars kinda) and possibly a Wangxian one shot who knows
favourite clothing item: uhh probably this purple pair of skirt/pant bottoms I got from Myanmar while I was there doing touristy things when the whole situation ... wasn’t as bad. but they’re flowy and fun and don’t really feel like pants when they are kinda pants? I wish I bought two tbh I only own one
comfort food: too many to count, my first ever one was Mac and cheese, and then it evolved into Laksa, and then it evolved into pineapple tarts and so like. idk currently would say all three
favourite time of year: not sure, autumn seems nice tho but this is coming from someone who had never rlly experienced Seasons until I moved out so still unsure (how do y’all do it like. you have to track the weather everyday, shit sucks y’all tf?)
favorite fic: oh boy I love so many, but this fic in particular has like. impacted my writing style and just my life in general it blew my mind and made me feel like there was so much you could really experiment with in terms of metaphor and pacing and style and like, muah
it’s Spock/Kirk and a Star Trek fic
I will warn y’all tho... TW: it gets pretty intense from around chapter 212 onwards. There are TW openings to chapters that are potentially triggering. Obviously as much as I love the fic it’s not without it’s faults and I’m more than happy to point it out if need be.
it’s: Observations by anon_j_anon on live journal and hoooo boy did I not do anything else but consume this fic for weeks y’all when I picked it up it’s 300 chapters of jaw dropping narration, like to the point that you can see Spock’s character growth from the writing style itself as it changes? just fucking delicious fr
passively tagging @ourpolestar, @merisscatteredbooknook, @that1libra and anyone else who wants to join !

Caity's 2023 Most Enjoyed List
This isn't a real reclist, but a list for me to squirrel away all the things I enjoyed this year before it's over. It's a little all over the place but this was a mess of a year so I suppose my most enjoyed list can be a mess as well. See you later 2023, don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Media:
1 - "Lena" by qntm. This is a very short story in the format of a Wikipedia article that gives me so many delightful shivery feelings about consciousness and trans-humanism and who owns the rights to machine learning/AI datasets. Very topical this year.
2 - Dungeon Meshi finished its publication and the final chapter made me cry real tears. I've been following the series for 8+ years and it is everything good with comics - art, world building, the engagement and subversion of fantasy tropes, relationships, story, recipes, the casual cannibalism, the ending. All perfect. Ryoko Kui is a genius. I am very excited for the anime airing next week.
"I think the entire point of this journey we went on was about learning how to accept death."
"Meals are the special privilege of the living. In order to stay alive, we need to keep eating."
3 - I read a lot of questionable cnovels this year but I really enjoyed two. The first was The Villainous Shizun Is As Beautiful As A Flower which is a shorter BL Shizun fucker cultivation romance. The arc after the MC finds his father goes on for a little too long (and the timeskip is awkward) but the MC is engaging enough that I didn't mind. This was a very fun quick read that I want to talk more about.
The second was For Love of the Game which is an e-sports danmei where an former actor falls in love with the captain of his fake League of Legends team (lmao). Look. Okay. I was on a kick and actually read FOUR e-sports BL novels this year and this was the one I enjoyed the most. I loved that the MC and ML had an established relationship before ever meeting face to face. Some of the reviews are salty about the ML's sneaky plotting side but both I and the MC were into it! The MC was even into the terrible secondhand embarrassing singing confession scene. But beyond the main couple, I LOVED the side paring of their "old" player and the captain on the rival team. I even got into the stupid video game strategy stuff. I had a great time.
I also re-read Who Dares Slander My Senior Brother and Where is Our Agreement to be Each Other’s Arch-Rivals? now that the translations are finished and enjoyed both of them again free from the tortures of machine translated cultivation terms. I still think both suffer from 3rd act issues. But damn did I like both ships.
(As a note - this is a list of likes but my highest high to highest disappointment cnovel was Cannon Fodder Fake Master Was Stunned After Being Reborn which I'm not even going to link because I'm still mad about it. The idol arc and the triple baby swap reveal made me so crazy invested I was literally telling my sisters the entire plot scene by scene as I read. But the last couple arcs ruined the romance/plot. I HATED the ML by the end. What haaaaappened.)
4 - I remained pretty into the SCP Foundation this year, but instead of the wiki itself, I spent a lot of time listening to the SCP Archives podcast and The Exploring Series podcast episodes. I really enjoyed the radio play aspect of the SPCA but I also enjoy how the Exploring series is just listening to some dude give you lore dumps. Its the ideal painting, journaling, chore, driving, etc. podcast for me. Check out Exploring the SCP Foundation: The ABCs of Death (Compilation) for TWELVE HOURS of great SCPs. Crazy stuff.
5 - Fire Emblem Engage and Fire Emblem Heroes. Not a ton to say on these but I enjoyed them! Ike/Soren continues to cook in FEH and I finished up merging/ascending my Eirika collection because she is the prettiest princess in the entire world.
6 - Among Us. I played..... a lot of Among Us this year with both my discord friends and new friends. Moving on.
7 - Silo on Apple TV. I'm a little burnt out on apocalypse media right now but I started watching Silo when I was also reading Red Rising and it got my brain working on all of these humanity is most human in the soil! the unfeeling earth feeds us! kinda thoughts. Rebecca Ferguson is the prettiest woman in the entire world.
8 - Speaking of digging, @Kala on Tiktok who is tunneling a "suburban mine" under her house, presumably in an HOA community the eastern United States. Kala is actually in the process of being cancelled right now and people are making very boring "I told you so" videos because someone finally snitched on her to authorities for not having a permit to dig, install electrical work, weld, reinforce, "mine", etc. under her property. Obviously this is bad! This is not how people engaging in the social contract/not experiencing some sort of mental illness do things! But I work in Construction/Engineering and am still fully obsessed with her. Hobby tunneling is so fascinating and here is someone who is documenting it for the internet. Let her dig!
Non-Media Related Likes:
1 - Volunteering once a month at my local hospital. I LOVED THIS. I got to hang out with friends and gossip for a couple hours every month, cook new giant recipes for families going through a hard time, and give back. Definitely going to continue this next year.
2 - Summer floating after work in my special "secret" river spot with a big floppy sunhat, a couple ciders, and someone to chat and watch the local birds (herons, turkey vultures, albatross, blackbirds) with. I brought 3 separate dates floating this year and it was the best idea. Will be happening again.
3 - Espresso martinis. I was actually sober for most of this year because I discovered I just like a fancy drink/excuse to go out and don't actually need the alcohol (and it's cheaper). But espresso martinis from this one tiny wood paneled bar in North Portland decorated like a hunting lodge where they make them extra frosted and sweet? Obsessed.
4 - Live music. Nothing as crazy as last year's 23 shows & 2 festivals (thank god) but shouting along to 'Batman' live at the perfect Front Bottoms show in late summer. The Michigander concert that I didn't even want to go to that felt like a house show. The Beaches on Christmas. Tons of local shows at Turn Turn (rip). So fun.
5 - Parasailing. I had never parasailed before my trip to Mexico this year. Who was gonna tell me it fucks! I want to go again right now.
6 - The weird local actor/play scene in Portland. I'm talking about a Cthulhu puppet show, publicly submitted one acts, a live acted Harry Potter rewrite where people shout along to Oppenheimer quotes, a horror fest in a theater so small they make you leave between acts and everyone in the lobby is talking about clown classes, and a one-man gay musical about ghosts. Where else except local theater will you spend $10 and a few hours watching someone pretend sprinkle themselves with seasonings and shove themselves in a large pot. This is the arts, babe. I am only going to attend more of these shows in 2024.

I wanna take you with me To life with no more yesterdays We can start again awake and so excited And change the way we always push We always push I'll open up and be your parachute And I'll never let you down So open up and be my human angel And we'll only hit the ground Running
I've really never been so in love with a ship before? When I used to draw my danmei art, I would listen to, like...crime podcasts...while I drew. But I listen to music and actually relate to the words when I draw Roosmav.
It's so weird because my reputation has probably never been worse in any fandom (I have never had anything but a positive + productive reputation in fandom before), but I have also never been so earnestly sincere and inclined to be push on in a fandom, either. I used to not express my feelings about my works, etc., because I knew that being too revealing would not help me rack up an arbitrary social media number, but with Roosmav, I have all of my everflowing thoughts and enthusiasm to show. I just never talked before Roosmav, and this ship made me realize just how satisfying that expressing your thoughts on + love for a thing is.
This blog is my therapeutic journal/Silent Hill, but I want to make it my place to gather a lot of my thoughts on Roosmav for myself, too. I have a lot of them, and they are entirely self-contained. At this point, Bradley and Maverick are kind of like my OCs, and I want to talk about and do things with them, if even just by myself for now.
I still romanticize them, but not in the fragile, child-like way I did last year. I romanticize them because of everything that has happened, and that I've still managed to maintain and even grow the love and affection I have for them. I've turned that love not only into images - but into words for the very first time in my life - and I am proud that I've managed to do this for myself!

The pinnacle blossoms at the future of the journal of life, howdy—doody, everyone! Praise God we are still able to meet today because of the power of the ruler above. •ᴗ•
Yuuze Amari is the name I prefer to be called—here, at least, you can address me with any nicknames you like. I have reached my legal age. Another thing about me for you to know is I go by Any Pronouns so less worry about mispronouns me.
Currently, I put my interest on Animangas such as One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, Blue Lock, Black Butler, Attack on Titan, etc. Furthermore—I read a lot of Manhwa, Manga, Danmei (2ha, BAB, SVSSS, MDZS, YuWu), and Classic Literature. I’m a big fan of Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint and Taylor Swift.
A retired Genshin and HSR player who were forced to quit because of my poor device. *Sadge* But, I am now playing MobileLegends to learn how to properly manage my anger. Oh, important to notice! Mads Mikkelsen is the embodiment of ‘my type’ so… that speaks a lot about me. 😋
Read This Before You Follow!
This account type is unlabeled and is not spoiler free. You will see me randomly rants about my daily life and stressed out with adult life I wasn’t ready for. I do soft block to break the mutuals. I also employ Content Warning and Trigger Warning on occasion. I will nonetheless employ it if it has the potential to harm or trigger a significant amount of people.
Do Not Follow If.
You can't respect others, support incest and pedophilia either in real life nor fiction, LGBTQ+ phobic, a gay fetishizer, big account above 200 followers, and minor under 18 (old moots are okay).

An incomplete view of what I read this year. I wrote them down on my bullet journal and didn’t bother adding some of them to Storygraph, especially the danmei and light novels and manga and a couple of really old children’s books. Winter’s Orbit was a reread.

Well. Once again I have been driven to figure out where I want to make my internet base since Twitter is being run by a not-so-smart billionaire who is a bit crazy and it feels worse. Anyway, I'm going to attempt to cross-post more with this journal being my base of operations.
A couple of months ago I decided I wanted to start listening to my music and actually start adding physical copies to my collection again. This started as a result of seeing all the shows that were nuked and removed as a tax-writeoff for the discovery+/WB/HBO merger that occurred. Since everything moved to streaming, things that a person loves to watch, read, listen to, can be deleted, locked away and I feel like I need to make sure that I have physical copies of the things I love.
Ironically, this happened right before I became a Swiftie and I am slowly working on adding her albums to my collection, along with some books (like all the Danmei LOL) and movies, TV shows I want. That said, I've been going through my streaming library on YouTube Music and listening to albums in full and making note of the ones I love, while making note of the individual songs I like on full albums where I only like 2 to 3 of the songs and just buying the mp3 files to burn to disk.
So that gets us to today and I am listening to Hidden Citizens - Revivals EP and their thing is making "epic" versions of known songs and this one is pretty cool. I love epic soundtracks and have been known to collect a few (Interstellar, anyone? And Inception?!), so this treatment is always a delight. Check them out if you can. And if your flavor is epic songs lol.

So I received an inbox on Danmei recommendations and was drafting the reply but I accidentally delete the draft. I’m so sorry T_T I don’t remember the username of the person who asked. I’m just gonna post my reply here hoping the person will see it.
Anyway, the ask goes along this line: “I’m looking for danmei novels that have fantasy, slow burn and some comedy. I have read all MXTX’s novels and also Sha Po Lang and Liu Yao.” So here’s my recs:
Hi there,
Thank you for asking. In fact I also have the very same preference as you do: slow burn, fantasy and some comedy. But somehow I have a hard time finding a novel that l consider great - perhaps it’s just me being an odd reader...
Also, since I’ve got involved with Daomu Biji 6 months ago, I haven’t checked out any new title (read: I’m too deep in this abyss to get out). I understand you are probably only looking for danmei novels but if you have some time, check out Daomu. Incredible bromance between the mains. But I digress...
With all that being said, still, here are several titles that I have managed to check out / heard a lot of people talking about. They all have fantasy/supernatural elements & comedy. Note that I only read long novel - preferably 100+ chapters.
- Hun Bing Zhi Ge / Jiang Chao Ge and The Spirit Weapon: Slow burn, great fantasy and world building. Is an adventure-type story where the main character trains to be stronger, travels from one town to another, forms great bond with his comrades and finally defeats the Big Boss.
- Di Wang Gong Lue / The Emperor’s Strategy: Not actually slow burn since the couple have feelings for each other since the very beginning, but their personalities are fantastic - both the gong and the shou are lovable. Storyline is great too. Have manhua and donghua adaptations.
- Zhen Hun / Guardian: Another super famous novel by Priest (guess you already know about it). Sort of slow burn. Also have a live action adaptation which, to be honest, is kinda crappy but Zhu Yilong and Bai Yu were amazing at acting out the main couple (they pretty much saved the entire series).
- The Husky and His White Cat Shizun: I haven’t read this but many, many people say this is like Scum Villain - just a lot more tragic and twisted (still Happy Ending though).
- Tong Qian Kan Shi / My horrible attempt at translating the title: The Coins That Shoulder Life: I loved this. This is the only danmei novel where I find a couple that have very similar personalities to MDZS’s Lan Wangji & Wei Wuxian. Fun storyline with a lot of intro to the art of fengshui and magical formations. And yes, extremely slow burn.
- Shishang Di Yi Fo Xiu / The History’s Number 1 Buddhist Cultivator: 300+ chapters, super solid cultivation storyline. Read this if you want to properly learn more about cultivation and the vast world surrounding it. The tone is generally serious (of course, some comedy here and there) and the romance is built slowly.
- Mo Du / Silent Reading & Po Yun / Breaking Through The Clouds: No fantasy elements but rather investigation/detective. Really great storyline where the characters keep getting into dangerous situations which require them to protect each other (and hence slowly falling in love lol). I highly recommend.
This is probably not a lot since, as I mentioned, I’m taking a break from danmei. But I hope you find something good to read from the list! ^^ You can also DM me and we can chat more about other titles.
Again, I’m sorry for accidentally deleting your ask T.T
Have fun reading!
