[2021 Week 2] 8th - 15th January. Goal setting, finding a balance, achieving dreams.
[2021 Week 2] 8th – 15th January. Goal setting, finding a balance, achieving dreams.
WEEK 2 – 2021(7th to 15th Jan 2021) I’m sure most people make a few new years resolutions each year; personally I’m one for writing them down on paper with an actual pen, and then ticking them off as I go. Recently I’ve found a few of these old pieces of paper from previous years. It’s so nice to find an old tatty piece of folded paper, to then open it up expecting nothing but a random shopping…

492 - United Kingdom 🇬🇧 Salisbury — Today I mostly did nothing. Finally. My body feels fine, but my mind is messy and fed up with travel. It’s time to restock. In a few days I’m going to keep my legs ticking over by running the Hackney Half marathon with the Betway crew. See you guys on Sunday. Today though i’m sleeping in the sun with the clothes washing underway the photo backups taking place, and i think I’ll have a Chinese takeaway tonight to chill. — Sorry updates have been delayed folks - I’m completely mentally and physically exhausted. Thank you for all the lovely messages of support asking if I’m alive. I am alive, just very much ready for a long sleep. Only 57 countries to go in just under 6 months. — Please donate to Prostate Cancer UK. Remember I’m trying to reach my fundraising goal of £250,000 to help fight prostate cancer. A marathon in every country in the world. My dear friend was diagnosed and given as little as 2 years to live. We must stop this disease. If you can spare £2 please use the link in my bio or visit Just Giving and search Nick Butter. — Over 400,000 men are living with and after the disease in the UK. Every 45 minutes one man dies from prostate cancer – that's more than 11,500 men every year. — If you’re male, over 40 and haven’t thought about prostate cancer you should. 490 - Rwanda 🇷🇼 Kigali Marathon 141 POSTPONED Flight ✈️ to London 🇬🇧 — As per yesterdays post - I’ve taken the decision to miss Rwanda, Zambia, and Uganda in favour of sorting out the various problems. You may think, why don’t i just get the marathon done and then move on. I would except the only flight available was at 16:20 and this last minute change of plan didn’t allow for enough time... without worry of missing the flight. — I am in the middle of replanning these 3 counties. They will likely be slotted back in sometime in October. So far we’ve had over 60 cancelled flights, and so many changes to the itinerary that I’m not sure where to start. The great news though is that 95% of the countries have either been completed or the flights are booked and paid for. So all I need to do now is rest for a couple of days and then get the bags back on, hop on a flight to Burundi 🇧🇮 and then I’m on my way to finishing this mission. — At 16:20 today i boarded the first leg of my journey home. Rwanda to Doha. It’s now 23:00pm and I’ve just landed before my next flight to London. Another 8 hours. Sorry updates have been delayed folks - I’m completely mentally and physically exhausted. Day 484 - Kenya 🇰🇪 Namibia Marathon 139 — Detained by police 👮‍♀️ - but still a better day than yesterday and another marathon closer to achieving my dream. What’s your dream? This is your world 🌍 — Running today was a huge contrast to 48 hours ago slogging it out in the crazy humidity of Comoros. The faff with airport delays yesterday did leave me feeling exhausted this morning; but once the legs started to turn over the magic of running happened. Legs felt less heavy, my mood was lifted and I was pushing through the miles with hardly any effort. The power of the mind is an incredible thing. Everyone knows running is therapy one way or another and today was prime example. I started moody, tired and if I’m honest I really didn’t want to run... but 20 minutes later I was skipping along, head thinking of other things, and before long I finished smiling and content. Here’s to running. The best healthy drug for bad moods. — I would have loved to run in Iten, the home of African long distance but sadly time wasn’t permitting. A new country every other day doesn’t leave much time for anything else; that’s kinda the point though. Priority one! Get the job done. A marathon in every country in the world. Anything else is a bonus. — I did have a rather annoying run in with the police today which left me feeling frustrated with the politics of this continent but I was soon cheered up with an intro to a great few guys called Joseph, James and Myles; these guys do great work with the Gathima Edwards foundation. — So the police story went like this. They stopped and held me for questioning because I allegedly videod a building that was under surveillance. The building was just a phone shop and the 12 armed men were probably over the top. Besides I didn’t actually video their building. They still manages to literally hold me while they questioned me after escorting me to a little porta cabin. I assume they were hoping for some bribes but I know better and just talked them out of it. Only took 20 minutes 🙈 — #runningtheworld196 #travel #world #marathon #running #run #nickbutter #worldrecord #worldfirst #runner #running #africa #prostatecancerUK #hot #kenya #nairobi #happy (at Nairobi, Kenya) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxKpL1aH-Rk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=cffzpr0z84w

Day 474 - United Kingdom 🇬🇧 London Marathon ✅ — 🙈😛🤘🏼👣🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️ - WOW - what a day. Well done to all of you who ran and supported throughout yesterday. I have only spent 38 days in the UK over the last 18 months and every time i return is for a purpose. Most of the time it’s to sort visas, pick up passports or some logistical reason. Today was all about running one of greatest marathons on the planet. Over the past 72 hours it’s been a whirlwind to get on top of everything. Speaking at various gigs, visiting some schools, meeting up with the team, and of course having lunch a a hug with the main man Kev. — Andy Murray, Eliud Kipchoge, Mo Farah, Chris Evans, Charlie Webster, Jenny Faulkner and more, thank you for taking the time to chat with me about my journey. An extra thank you to the BBC and the VirginLondonMarathon. — Being swept off to the hospitality tent for some breakfast and to collect a GPS tracker, kickstarted a brilliant day of conversations and memories. Jon, Luke, Andy, Helen, Radzi, Harriett, Lucas, Andre and all the team at Prostate Cancer UK, today was a day I’ll never forget. — “Don’t count the days, make the days count”. The words i live by, and I’m sure all of you who ran feel you made your day count. Today raised about £11,000 for PCUK and gained some support for the rest of the journey. We are nearly at £40,000 on @justgiving now. Checkout the run on @strava. If you haven’t donated already, please do. LINK IN BIO. Just search Nick Butter Just Giving. You’re helping to save men’s lives. — Tomorrow i fly out to Ethiopia to run marathon number 137 of the 196. This marks 70% complete. Ahhhh it’s getting so close now. — Here’s the next few counties. Remember - if you fancy joining me on a run, or maybe coming along to the final marathon in Athens then let me know. Day 446 - Laos 🇱🇦 — Hot air; climbing to new heights. — The fiery roar of the two huge burners just above my head were intense, hot and loud. The heat and the noise made me jump every time. We bundled into the basket nervously and before we knew it we were no longer on the ground. The elegance of the balloon as it lifted into the sky was so captivating. The people, cars and building shrunk, and the mountains grew closer as we passed through the thin layer of hazy clouds to reveal the wonders of Laos. The view over this region was beautiful. The small dot of another ballon in the valley floor bellow put the scale of this place into perspective. Gentle, elegant and calm. What a great and completely mad way to travel. — I managed to doze off after yesterdays busy day at about 02:00am this morning which gave me about an hour of sleep before a pre booked taxi to Vang Vieng at 03:00am. — The driver woke me up at about 6:15. We were parked in a huge empty dirt car park in the centre. The light was still dim and the sun hadn’t fully woken up. — In the distance there were two hot air balloons taking off and so i went to take some photos. To my surprise they still had some places available and i asked to join. They agreed and for a fraction of the cost of any other balloon ride I’d seen. — As we came into land after a 40 minute flight we missed our landing spot and were being pulled into houses below. The land aborted we climbed again and instead settled down in a local dirt park. Their ground team did a great job so much so that we didn’t even feel the ground meet the basket. — Next stop was a hike to the highest accessible view point in the area. This turned out to be steeper than i’d imagined and by the time I’d scrambled to the top i was covered head to toe in sweat. After a slow decent on muddy slippery terrain we visited a cave and then on to the Lagoon. Lunch, a nap in the shade in a hammock and then the drive back. — #travelling #travel #travelphotography #instatravel #travelblogger #runner #run #hotairballoon #hike #Laos #vangvieng #photography #worldtrip #asia #traveller #traveling #charity #prostatecancerUK #runningtheworld196 #nickbutter #view (at Viangviang, Laos) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvlCncJHVZF/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1m4tfi6lszmz1

Day 410 - United Kingdom — @prostatecanceruk - NEEDS YOUR HELP — 1️⃣ Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. 2️⃣ Over 400,000 men are living with and after the disease in the UK. 3️⃣ Every 45 minutes one man dies from prostate cancer – that's more than 11,500 men every year. — If you’re male, over 40 and haven’t thought about prostate cancer you should. Especially if you’re black or you have a family history. If you’re black the chances of you having prostate cancer are doubled. 1 in 8 white men, and 1 in 4 black men. Please talk to your GP about having a PSA test. Anyone with concerns about prostate cancer may contact Prostate Cancer UK's specialist nurses in confidence on 0800 074 8383 or online via www.prostatecanceruk.org. — The specialist nurse phone service is free to landlines and open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 10am to 8pm on Wednesdays. MAKE THE CALL. — PLEASE DONATE. This expedition exists because I met a man called Kev; he will die from prostate cancer. He will leave behind a family and hundreds of loved ones. Please help me raise £250,000 for Prostate Cancer UK. This money can be used to begin a national screening program and help prevent other men from dying. — Today was another day pacing up and down trying to remember all the bits and pieces I have to do before I rejoin the mission, It’s so nice to have a few days to repack, re asses and generally crack on with all the stuff I usually don’t have time to do. Like wash. I’ve picked up my Malaria meds, charged all my devices, chatted with my dad about the next phase, and spent most days gorging on home cooking. A real treat to have my mums cooking again. I popped to the doctors today for a quick check up, and make sure my body wasn’t falling apart. I’m partnering with @thrivahealth a new pinprick blood test that will show me what my body is doing on a more regular basis. Let’s see what happens with this. Day 356 - United Kingdom 🇬🇧 Newquay, Cornwall — I went for a 7 hour drive at 01:00am this morning. Hey why not, I have loads of energy now, I haven’t ran a marathon in 4 days. Winning. — I guess like most people around Christmas i planned to have some down time... but unlike the rest of the world, these precious few days of not running, not getting on a plane, and not staying in a hotel meant I could be free from the commitments of the trip and just chill. It’s been a long time coming. — I made my list of ‘to do’s’ earlier this morning and began to make a start before I could properly relax. Multiple A4 pages later I have a list of 34 bits and pieces that have to get done before I continue with my journey next year... things like... — 1. Downloading all the GPX data from both watches, back them up, and update the watches... It’s important I get all the data over to Guinness World Records not to mention all the data is complete, and accurate. 2. Process my log book. This holds all the witnesses, the times, the locations, the weather, all the bits that Guinness World Record need to approve my multiple records. 3. Upload all the vids content to the library for the production company for the documentary 4. Write some more of the book — The list goes on... and so after a long and busy few days, and after ticking just 8 items off my list of 34, it was time to take a break. — As a child, my family would visit Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall. Still my number one beach in the world actually. May not be hot or bikini weather, pretty much ever, but the waves, atmosphere and surf culture is captivating... and it’s just down the road in the grand scheme of things. — So today, I drove down through the night and managed to catch the tale end of the sunrise over the ocean. I arrived at about 07:00am. — A quick bite to eat in the form of a bacon butty with fluffy white bread and loads of butter and on with the day. Yum. — ##running #runner #newyear #marathon #worldfirst #nickbutter #runnerguy #traveller #blogger #world #adventure #run #travel #comfortzone #marathonman #runningtheworld #documentary #guy #photogrpahy #runningtheworld196 #christmas #memories #love #friends (at Fistral Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsJU3lWHSh-/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=h5xk478vw2i6

Day 250 - Rome to Rimini Italy 🇮🇹 Travel Day - Stupidly long hair! I’m sooo tempted to get rid of it. - Another 4 hours on a train, a sleepy sea side town and on top of everything I lost a bet to Dani. Never trust a drunk! 😂 [Dani would like everyone to know he is not a drunk, that’s what’s all drunks say right?] - Today we made the 4 hour journey to Rimini from Rome. Despite not needing to run in Rimini it was the easiest option to run marathon 73 in San Marino 🇸🇲 tomorrow. - The plan tomorrow morning is to get up early, grab an 08:00 bus through the mountains to the small hilly country of San Marino. The 5th smallest country in the world and I’ve heard it’s beyond hilly. I have tired legs so it’s going to be a tough one. - We arrived about 5 hours ago; it’s not what I was expecting; no disrespect to Rimini but it’s basically the same as any Spanish coastal resort; run down, pretty empty and full of arcade stands and drab hotels. Basically the south eastern coastline of the U.K. - Once again, thanks to my team and the hospitality of the Hotel Estade for putting us up. Small, quaint and super friendly staff. Certainly lucked out - I lost a bet to Dani playing Table tennis 🏓 First to 3 games, I didn’t even make it to 1. I paid for dinner, and blamed the loss on the wind. - We made friends with some locals, had a few drinks in a huge outdoor bar on the beach and listened to some quirky love music. Time for bed. - Needless to say I will sleep like a baby tonight. I’m a little apprehensive for tomorrow. Fingers crossed it’s not too hilly for my tired body. I’m full of a cold still so fingers crossed. Right, I’m all showered, some stretching done, belly full, and now it’s time for sleep. 👌🏼 ahhh sleep. - Anyone running Berlin soon? #berlinmarathon2018 #running #runner #marathon #run #runnersofinstagram #body #adventure #berlin #nickbutter #hot #runnerguy #ukrunchat #runningtheworld196 (at Rimini, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/BntrJ9oH8JQ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=sy9ylurswkhc

Day 239 - Spain 🇪🇸 Barcelona to Andorra 🇦🇩 - Travel Day! The glorious mountains of the piraneese welcomed us into the tiny principality of Andorra. - In the comfort and luxury of Ro’s kitchen we made fluffy scrambled eggs on seeded toast. With a piping hot cuppa tea we sleepily munched our food down over looking the early morning haze of Barcelona. - Bags packed, sleepy dust wiped away and a quick shower, we said good bye to the palace in the sky and meandered down the mountain and began our 3 hour drive to country number 68, Andorra. - Podcasts in the car, a stop for classic European service station snacks and before we knew it we had arrived in the tiny duty free haven of Andorra. Somehow we didn’t even need to show our passports at the border. Ro, thanks again for driving. - My next brilliant person to thank is Angel. Angel has been following on Instagram and online since my journey began; he’s a great runner, his father has cancer, and he’s generally a lovable chap. Angle has organised everything from food, accommodation, a running route, and press. - We checked into our rooms at the Centric Hotel, Dani downed our bottle of complimentary champagne and had a bath. Later we went down for the press conference and then headed to a tasty lunch at a local Japanese noodle bar. After a little wonder around the city we unpacked our bags before heading to Angels house for a delicious home cooked dinner. - Thanks to Mariajose, Angle’s wife for the scrummy pasta and brilliant conversation, not to mention the brownies, which I’m still craving now. - It’s now 23:00 and I’m just getting into bed. The alarm sounds in 6 hours ready for marathon 68 in the hills of Andorra. #running #run #mountains #adventure #travel #andorra #runnersofinstagram #nickbutter #marathonman #traveller #roadtrip #runningtheworld196 (at Andorra) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnQuNLTnqWQ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jeha77f1ho3z

Recovery with Airofit
As an athlete, carving out time for recovery is an essential aspect to my training and is what allows me to successfully complete expeditions in feats of endurance, including my most recent Run Britain. Before Run Britain I had already run a total of 826 marathons, and having completed The Italian Grand Tour of 100 marathons in 100 days in December 2020, I had some training in running long…

The 196 Foundation
With Run Britain only a week away, I want to share with you all more information about The 196 Foundation, the reason why I’m doing this.  The world doesn’t need more charities, it needs more ways to support them. I started The 196 Foundation because we are the lucky 1% born into a nation of fortune by chance, and who now has the responsibility to at least try to elevate lives that are less so.…
