Pearl diver (originally: Gyöngyhalász) Acrylic on paper 2024
This is about gnosis, and represents going under and returning with secret knowledge. It is never possible to return with all the knowledge at once. This is why these strange luminous objects are definitely not normal pearls and aren't even inside shellfish.
And yes, I realise that I just compressed the (overly-dramatic) entry into the water and the retrieval of the pearl into one picture, and that I overrepresented the splash. This was how the picture appeared in my mind, and I think the meaning is more expressive this way, so I made this choice knowingly.

The Lion and the Mouse - Part 4
Masterlist
Part 3
Here we have the last bit. I really liked these two. This idea kind of came out of no where and I wrote it really fast. Shout out to @whumpsday for being so invested in this story. Your praise fuels me!
Content: Stress position, bruises, broken ribs, escape, accidental cuts, mentions of temporary character death, non-sexual nudity
.........................................
The base got really quiet for a while. It woke Kai up though he didn’t think it wise to leave when the lights in the base were still on anyways, so he went back to sleep. When he woke up again, he realized he was getting too big for his first cloak and changed into his new one. He tied floss around his waist to hold it closed and stretched, deciding to go for a walk. He took his rope, tied with a thick button around the end in case he needed to try and grapple it around something, and tucked it into his belt. Now that he was eating and drinking, he was growing faster. He was about the size of a mouse and traveled just was quickly as one. He had energy again, something that the universe had always granted to him quickly enough, and he took off down the vents.
He took new paths, peering out in places. He was now too big to squeeze through most of them, but he didn’t worry about it too much. There were still places where the vents didn’t have grating at all.
After a few hours, he peered out through one grate and recognized a training room. He looked over the equipment and then noticed something moving on the floor. He leaned against the vent cover, trying to see better. The thing moved again and Kai was able to make out the shapes of limbs tied to a pole and in the reflection of the mirrors a face he recognized.
Kai stared in shock for a moment before pushing on the grate to see if it would come loose. It didn’t even budge and Kai went back to staring. After a moment, he left the grate, making his way back to his nest. He’d need to gather everything up for tonight. Hopefully he would be big enough to tie the razor blade to the broken piece of dowel he found so he could carry it. He was going to help Vigil after he knew it was safe. So, he gathered up his things and moved them all to the grate in the training room so he could watch and wait till evening.
……………………………
The timed lights went out. Vigil continued to lay on the floor, breathing slowly and purposefully. His chest and neck hurt from every time he’d curled up to look at the door when his mind played tricks on him, telling him someone was there. Besides that, his arms and legs hurt so bad, shaking and clenching as he was forced to hold that agonizing position, slightly curled the wrong way.
He sighed and closed his eyes. Despite everything, he was tired. He was so so tired and everything hurt and wouldn’t let him sleep. He thought about what he would do when he got out of here. He would tell the union, of course. There was no way he was going to let someone like Leshy scare him into silence. He’d tell the union and then wouldn’t leave union custody until Leshy was in jail or dead. Oftentimes, the union didn’t take kindly to offenders and would just send one of the assassins after them to make them disappear quietly, so that would probably be it, especially since a lot of the assassins liked Vigil. He was civil to them where a lot of the vigilantes were not and he was willing to cover for them on dangerous missions, acting as bait or a distraction or whatever else they needed.
He was just imagine how his favorite of the lot, Lily, would probably deal with Leshy after seeing Vigil’s wounds when something touched his face. He flinched back, sucking in a breath and a small figure stumbled and fell.
Vigil crossed his eyes until he could make out the form and realized quickly who it was.
“Kai,” Vigil whispered. “You’re alive!”
Kai nodded, straightening up. He was about as tall as Vigil’s hand and he was grinning. He was dirty, unshaven, and had a strange cloak made from what looked to be lint, but he seemed fine otherwise. He opened up the washcloth he’d been dragging around behind him and pulled out a razor on a stick. He tossed the razor up onto Vigil’s back and hauled himself up. Vigil tried not to twitch so much as he felt small feet crossing his back.
It seemed to take Kai a moment to figure out how he wanted to deal with the situation as he rubbed the razor against the thick leather cuff. Then the small man started swinging and chopping. He kept going for a while, falling over when Vigil flinched involuntarily a couple of times, but he got through the cuff, only making small cuts in Vigil’s wrist as he went.
When the leather snapped, the cuff went through the bar and allowed his other hand down more quickly than he’d expected. The sudden snap also sent Vigil’s legs out straight again, and he saw sparks as pain attacked all through his body at the sudden change.
He could feel Kai crawling over his back, dropping the razor and slowly letting himself down, sitting on the ground to look at his leg. He had a slice cut down his shin that he put pressure on quickly. He must have cut himself falling when Vigil had been freed.
Vigil sucked in a breath. “Sorry.”
Kai just shook his head.
Vigil slowly got to his knees and then got his feet in front of him with some difficulty, tossing the pole aside. He took the razor ax and cut through the rest of the leather cuffs as well. He put it down in Kai’s sack, not wanting to leave evidence that Kai had been there. He picked up the washcloth and everything inside and gently picked Kai up, cupping him in the other hand.
Kai leaned against his fingers as Vigil slowly limped to the door, his knee not agreeing with the movement at all. Despite that, he made it to the hall and then to the front doors. He cupped Kai to his chest to hide him from cameras and passed through the front doors. With that, it was down to his car. He didn’t have his keys, as they were still in his locker, but he had an extra set and an extra phone hidden in a small compartment.
He gently set Kai down, taking a moment to pass him the washcloth bag which Kai pressed against his wound.
Vigil retrieved his keys and phone, sat down, and got out of there.
………………………………..
Lily was up at all times of the day and night, but she had to sleep sometime. She had just been getting ready for bed at 3:00 Am when she heard the doorbell ring. She tied her robe closed around herself and went to look at her cameras. A familiar figure stood there, maybe a bit hunched and disheveled… and missing shoes.
Surprised, she moved to the door and opened it to find Vigil standing on her doorstep. His face was bruised badly, dried blood around his mouth and nose, lips split in multiple places. He had one hand on his ribs, leaning on one leg more than the other, and in his other hand was a small figure who was swathed in a slightly bloodied washrag.
“Come in, then, and sit down,” she said, not unkindly and Vigil murmured a thank you to her as he did so, sitting heavily on the couch and leaning his head back with a soft moan, setting the small man on the cushions beside him.
“Who’s that?” she asked as she pulled one of her stashed first aid kits from a drawer.
“You remember Kai?” Vigil asked, not looking at her.
“Oh! Right.”
“They were doing terrible things to him,” Vigil said, glancing down at the small man who pulled the cloth from his leg to see if it was still bleeding. “I was helping him escape and, ah, well, I’m sure you know of Leshy’s reputation.”
“Leshy?” she asked, putting down the kit to pull out her phone and take pictures. His eyes were bloodshot behind dark bruises, but he still looked grateful as she did. “Yeah, I’ve heard of him. He did this?”
“Yeah.”
“And you haven’t told the union yet?”
“Nah. Kai literally just got me out.”
Kai gave a little wave as she grabbed the scissors out of the kit and cut Vigil’s shirt off. They’d need good pictures for the union to look at in deciding how vicious an assassin they would be sending. Lily hoped they picked her. She would have some fun.
His torso was swollen and bruised. But it all seemed to move properly so he wasn’t in too much danger. It did seem like there might be a couple of broken ribs.
“Probably need to check for internal bleeding,” Vigil sighed. “He got me good in the stomach.”
Lily clicked her tongue, palpating the area gently to check it. “I think you’re fine. Any trouble breathing? Do you feel sick.”
“Nah, you’re probably right. Just bruised. I’ll need a brace for my knee.”
She got the scissors again and cut the pant legs up to the thigh to get some last pictures of his swollen and bruised knee and the bruises on his legs and arms.
“Alright. I think that’s all the Union will want. Do we need to get pictures of Kai?”
“Naw. That cut was an accident.”
He turned his head and said, “Still bleeding?”
Kai shook his head.
“We should probably wash it out.”
Kai nodded.
“Alright, I’ll be back.” Lily said.
True to her word, she came back with two bowls of water. She put one down on the table and picked Kai up, setting him next to it. He gladly stripped his cloak off and got in, getting to the business of cleaning off while Lily dipped cloth into the other one, washing blood off Vigil’s face and the cuts on his wrist.
Sleepily, Vigil caught her hand and kissed her knuckles as thanks before his eyes closed slowly, and he fell asleep while she finished. He was mostly bruised and his ribs weren’t bad enough to really worry about, so she got him laid out on the couch with pillows under head and a blanket over top. She went to the kitchen and came back with some hand towels and a washcloth for Kai.
He got out, dried off, and, after Lily ripped a hole in the middle of the washcloth for him, he put it on like a poncho and set about making the hand towels into a bed he could sleep on.
“I’m going to bed,” she told Kai, and he nodded, getting comfortable before she turned out the lights, made sure the door was locked, and then went to go sleep.
………………………..
“Vigil? Vigil! Hey!”
Vigil blinked awake at the strange high pitched voice that called to him and turned his head. He was surprised to see a cat sized Kai sitting on the edge of the table under the window, a hand towel worn like a toga over his shoulder.
“Hi, sorry. Do you think you could call Lily down? I’m not loud enough and I don’t trust my leg to take my fall. I have to go to the bathroom.”
Vigil blinked and sighed, shifting slightly and wincing. He took a slow breath in and called “LILY!!!”
There was a moment of silence and an annoyed, “WHAT!?” shouted back.
Vigil smiled a little and waited, listening to her coming down the stairs. She gave Kai a questioning look at how big he was now.
Kai grimaced a bit as he asked, “Could you help me down?”
Lily sighed, rolling her eyes and she did so. He thanked her quietly and wandered off with a limp to find the bathroom.
“Well, I guess I’ll check on you while I’m down here,” she said, pulling back the blankets to look at Vigil’s chest. “Mmm going as a painted canvas to the next union party, huh?”
Vigil chuckled. “Thinking about it… Do you have another bathroom?”
“Upstairs.”
“Ugh.” Vigil slowly hauled himself upright, wincing at the motion, but, with Lily’s help, got up. She let him relieve himself in peace, but came in to help him get dressed in clothes he stashed at her place, just like she had some clothes stashed at his.
“Thanks,” he grunted as she helped him put on a shirt.
“Of course. I think I have a knee brace up here. Let me find it for you.”
She found it in her closet and put it on over his pants. He managed to limp down the stairs with just the help of the bannister, Kai waiting at the bottom.
“You’re growing back fast,” Vigil commented as he limped to the kitchen to get a drink.
“I found some food to eat while I was hiding. Sorry for missing the pick up. I was so tired after crossing the hall I passed out until the lights went out.”
“It’s alright,” Vigil replied, finding a shot glass to fill with water for Kai, which Kai too gratefully before getting a glass for himself. “It’s not your fault.”
Kai shrugged and Lily hummed, getting their attention.
“I’m going to take all this to the union and get it taken care of. I might even talk to the hero commission. What were they doing to you, Kai?”
Kai swallowed nervously, handing his cup back to Vigil who put it in the sink.
“Um, killing me to keep me small.”
“There were traces of blood all over Leshy’s office,” Vigil said, opening the fridge to get out some eggs before dragging a stool over so he could sit by the stove to cook them.
“Oh, yeah. He uh… tortured me sometimes before I died. Well, almost every other time. I’ll never look at dryers the same way again. Or pliers.”
Lily drew up her lip in disgust. “Well, I’ll get the message passed on. Help yourselves. Vigil, you know where the blankets are when Kai gets too big for the towel?”
“Yup. All good.”
“Alright then. I’ll be back.”
With that, she went to get changed.
Kai climbed the handles of the drawers and sat on the counter by the stove as Vigil cooked.
“Thank you,” Kai said softly. “I wasn’t sure I’d ever get out of there. Leshy said he’d extended my sentence there another couple of months. He…” Kai shuddered. “Just, thank you.”
“Yeah.. and hey, sorry about running out on you when I first saw your box in Leshy’s office. It was disturbing after seeing all the blood splatter remains, you know?”
“I know. And you got me out eventually, so no hard feelings.”
“Yeah,” Vigil said as he finished scrambling the eggs. He got a plate, set it on the counter between them, and dumped it all out.
They both ate eggs with their fingers from the same plate as Lily left to go ruin a certain hero team’s whole lives.

Hope you enjoyed!

Sketch Art Stream, July 27th and 28th: Commission Roundup
Another successful sketch stream from last week~ This time, I chose a few opportunities to help draw new character designs alongside some wonderful pre-established characters (Especially the bobcat and the half-Keaton character), which is always great fun! And also rather challenging with the self-imposed time limit I always put on these slots.
Slots this time included (top to bottom, left to right):
Taki's skunk fursona in a demiskunk form
Mr.Nibs's bobcat artifacer artillerist, Sidra Ravel
Howlitzer's kintsugi jackal lady, Aurum
Yumii's rat fursona in a swimsuit set similar to her partner's
SiGe's fursona in an RPG-inspired halfcat/demicat form
Cameron with a half-Keaton researcher determined to make a hyper-detailed Hyrule Compendium by hand

Whumpril 2023 - Day 4
Me and @brinkofdiscovery talked about this SO long ago but I'm just really in love with this whole idea of Mariano just having this habit of accidentally napping when he feels the least bit safe and comfortable. Evritt still belongs to him!
TWs: non-sexual nudity, touch aversion, anxiety
Ache | Massage | Needle
Evritt's mountain town was almost dreamlike. Mariano couldn't believe such a peaceful place was almost decimated by his king. Well, he could, but he really couldn't believe that he was the reason it was still sleepy and whole and idyllic. He didn't even need to keep his blade on him--it was tucked away in the room he and Bastian were staying in.
Somehow, they all knew his name, too. No one was even nervous about talking to him. They were normal. They'd smile and wave and make small talk that he almost didn't know how to respond to. The older men would gently talk down to him about his age, saying that he'd understand more about their discussions when he was older.
One old woman in the market had pinched his cheek.
It just hadn't sunk in yet, even when Evritt decided to take him as his plus one for a massage. Apparently, knights here just got to get massages. Their king was dedicated to keeping his people in good health, particularly the people who served the citizens.
It was...weird.
The both of them were led into a dim room with candles and padded tables, and instructed to disrobe to their comfort. Following Evritt's lead, Mariano folded his clothes and set them aside. Lying face-down on the table in only his boxers, he took a deep breath. Being so vulnerable with someone he'd never met before, in a place that was so calm...it just made his heart race. It didn't make sense.
The massage therapists walked in and introduced themselves. Their long, pointed ears were up and happy, their smiles were soft and seemed genuine. They were as disarming as a person could be.
Why did Mariano feel like he was going to die, then? Evritt wouldn't take him somewhere dangerous with no warning. He realized as they were rubbing some sort of oil onto their hands that he hadn't heard anything they'd said since they entered.
The first touch to his back made Mariano jump.
"Are you okay? Was the oil still too cold?" They asked as the other massage therapist looked over, gentle concern on her face.
"Yes, no--you're fine." Mariano said, sounding breathless. "I'm just...nervous. I think." He admitted, unable to look at anyone. "I've never had a massage before."
"Well, you're in for a treat." The other therapist said, starting to work on Evritt's shoulders. "Ivy is great."
"I won't touch you anywhere that's covered up." Ivy said. "If I start going too hard, you just give me a thumbs-down and I'll lighten up. Can I start with your shoulders and upper back?"
Mariano hummed and nodded. "Alright, that's alright."
This time, when Ivy touched him, Mariano let out a slow breath. The heels of their hands worked along his tense muscle, sending relief and pain through him in equal measure. "You sure are nervous, huh?" They said. "Feels like there's just bone in here. That's alright though, we have plenty of time."
Ivy was methodical, taking their time as they worked from his shoulders to his sides. There were no comments on his scars, no hesitation as their hands drifted over his old, healed burns. They didn't seem nervous to touch him at all.
There was a steadiness to their motions too, pressing predictable circles into the muscle of his lower back. They leaned into it when they needed to, asking how he was doing now and then. "You can go harder than that." He said every time. He didn't think Ivy could do anything that would hurt him. They certainly didn't seem like they wanted to.
Every touch was safe. The room was pleasantly warm, the candles smelled nice, and he could hear the soft daily noise outside. As Ivy's hands worked their way up his spine, Mariano sighed, his eyes slipping closed as he finally relaxed.
"Mr. Ortiz?"
When Mariano opened his eyes again, the light had shifted. Ivy was standing in front of him, gentle amusement in their eyes. "Wh...I, did I fall asleep?" He asked, voice still rough and groggy.
"I think you did doze off a little." Ivy said, smiling. "How're you feeling?"
"I'm...I'm sorry about that." Mariano blinked hard as his face flushed, realizing that his limbs didn't feel heavy from the last few weeks of stress and fighting and walking. "I think this is the best I've ever felt." When he started to sit up, his entire spine popped, pulling another sigh of relief from Mariano and a small, surprised laugh from Ivy. "I think you actually fixed me, somehow."
"That's what I'm here for! I'm glad your first massage was a good one. I'll let you both get dressed so you can get outta here."
They left with a little wave, and Mariano needed a second to sit on the table and just feel. He hadn't felt so light and comfortable since he was a small child, still living with his parents."That...I, I see why you get these, now." He said as he righted his glasses on his nose, laughing lightly as Evritt smiled at him.
"They're nice, right? Come on, we still have a picnic to go on."

.....................................................
Kai woke in the stupid capsule, swaying from side to side. He looked down and didn’t recognize the clothing his captor was wearing. He twisted, unable to see anything through the cap, but he pressed his face to the plastic, trying to look up at who was wearing the necklace. He could only see a little, but it was enough. Vigil was wearing him. Why? What was happening?
Vigil turned quickly into a quiet hallway and then dashed into a storage closet, gently pulling the necklace off. Kai wobbled and curled up to keep from hitting the sides too painfully, but Vigil was careful and Kai’s precaution turned out to be unwarranted.
Kai looked up as Vigil pried off the cap, staring down at him. “Hi,” Vigil whispered.Kai was thankful for that. At this size his eardrums were delicate, and thus sensitive. Vigil gently tipped the capsule and Kai fell into the middle of his palm. Even if he laid down stretched out with his arms up he wouldn’t be as tall as Vigil’s palm. He thought of throwing himself off of Vigil’s hand and becoming smaller to escape, but he was tired and Vigil’s palm was warm.
“Okay, okay, um, okay. This is uhhh not ideal. I’m not going to leave you here though. Just have to come up with a plan.”
Kai sat there, shocked, looking up at Vigil. Vigil’s mountain of a forehead worked as he thought.
“I don’t think I can hear you so you’re just going to have to nod or shake your head. I’m sorry,” Vigil said, leaning back.
Kai nodded eagerly. Vigil wasn’t going to be leaving him behind? This was…. Kai couldn’t even imagine. He wrapped his arms around himself, trying not to lose it as a feeling of hope expanded in his chest.
Vigil sighed. “Okay. Okay. So….. he’s expecting you in that box this evening. Do you know how big you’ll be by then?”
Kai nodded and got unsteadily to his feet. He tapped one of vigil’s palm lines and then stumbled to the other side and tapped another spot.
“Okay,” Vigil said as Kai sat down, seeing spots. He was running out of energy quicker than he expected, “Got it. You’ll be easy to hide. If I roll my sleeves down there’d be a gap. I drop you, but you end up in my sleeve. I’m good at tricks so it shouldn’t be too hard, especially if.. Does he close the lid fast when he puts you in the box…. No. It’s too complicated. It won’t work if he checks the box right after I do it….”
Vigil was silent for a moment before biting his lip. “Oh, no….. Does… does your blood stay behind when you wake up?”
Kai didn’t like where this was going, but nodded anyway. “It might be better if you… maybe die again? You can get smaller right?”
Kai nodded again, curling on himself nervously.
“We’ll say I dropped the necklace while fixing the clasp and it broke and you died. The blood on the inside of the capsule will be proof and then, um you can wait there while you’re small. I tell them what happened and then come back and stand there for a minute. You climb my shoe or something and we get out of here. Do you think you can do that?”
Kai pressed his hands to his chest. What was dying one more time? He’d be free, right? He slowly nodded.
“Okay, okay. I’m not leaving you here, Kai.”
Kai nodded again and, with that, Kai got back into the capsule and they were off.
…………………………..
Vigil was nervous. He pre broke the clasp and stood near the front door before fidgeting with the necklace. Kai stood, hands pressed to the plastic and his tiny face hopeful.
“Here goes,” Vigil whispered. He fidgeted with the clasp before letting it slip through his fingers. The capsule hit the floor and Vigil, making sure that this all went right, stepped forward as though he were trying to catch it, crushing it under his foot.
He felt the snap of plastic and he stumbled back. There was blood in the capsule, and he saw what he thought could be Kai’s body and made sure the spot slipped out as he picked up the capsule. With that, he went running to explain what happened to Leshy.
…………………………
Kai woke up and it took him several minutes to just get up. He was exhausted. He’d never been this small before and he couldn’t imagine wanting to be. Everything was huge. Just getting out of the walkway would take hours of trekking. Kai finally forced himself up. Vigil had told him to wait at the corner by the front doors and he’d stand there before leaving. Kai just hoped he’d have the energy to climb up Vigil’s shoe.
He was beginning to doubt it as he started the walk to the wall.
………………………….
Vigil withstood the reprimand he received from Technical, and the glares he got from Leshy. He didn’t like the way Leshy was looking at him, like he was considering planning some sort of revenge now that he didn’t have his toy.
Vigil was extremely relieved when Technical told him to leave early, whispering to him as he led him out of the office, “Just so Leshy can calm down, you know. Take tomorrow off, too.”
So, Vigil made his way to the corner, watching the ground to be sure he wasn’t stepping on a tiny villain, and leaned against the wall, pulling out his phone to scroll for a moment while he waited for Kai to get on his shoe. He’d even tied his shoelaces so they would be loose, giving him an excuse to bend down and pick Kai up in the pretense of tying them if need be.
As he stood there, Nautilus came down the hall and gave him a look. “Hey, what are you doing here?”
“Oh, I was just heading out,” Vigil said.
“You might want to hurry. I heard what happened and Leshy’s coming up this way.”
Panicked, Vigil said, “Yeah, I’ll be out of here then.”
“Alright, see ya. Good luck.”
Nautilus headed off and Vigil crouched down, slowly undoing the shoelace, desperately searching for Kai. He couldn’t see anything even moving on the ground. Maybe he was already on his shoe? What if Kai had gotten stepped on again? He was already so small last time, he probably wouldn’t even be visible if he got killed again. How long would it take for him to grow out, or would he be small enough that he’d get stuck in an endless kill cycle?
Vigil was dragged from his thoughts as he heard Leshy turn into the hall and he got up and left out the doors before he could be seen. Kai or no Kai, he did not want to be caught alone with Leshy right now. Besides, he’d be back, and hopefully Kai would be big enough by then to be seen.
……………………………
When Kai woke up, it was dark in the huge hallways. He blinked confused. Had he fallen asleep? He stood up, whirling around, trying to figure out what was going on. He knew there was a clock in the hallway but there was no way he’d be able to see it without walking forever to the other side of the hallway. Still, the halls were dark which meant it was night time. The heroes would all be in bed and Vigil would be…
Not here. Kai wrapped his arms around himself, trying not to think or worry. Vigil would be back. He’d be back. He just missed his chance today, not missed his chance forever. He’d be fine. Vigil would be back and he could escape later. He still couldn’t believe that he’d dozed off and missed getting out, but the adrenaline had all faded away when he reached the wall and all he could think about was laying down for a minute.
Kai kicked himself mentally as he tried to make a plan. He was cold, naked, about the size of a grain of rice, and was in a building where if he was caught, his torment would only continue. Heck, after the plan Vigil pulled, there was a good chance the vigilante would never be allowed back in the building. Kai might have to escape by himself.
Kai nodded slightly. First order of business would be finding shelter. Somewhere hidden and safe, and big enough for him to grow a little. So, he took off down the hallway. After a few hours of travel, he finally came to what he was looking for. A vent. He knew that some of the vents around the place didn’t have grates on them, so he wasn’t trapping himself in here as he got bigger, and while it was nowhere near the size a normal person would need to climb it, it wouldn’t be a problem for him for at most 2 weeks if he couldn’t find much to eat. He’d be able to escape before then. He’d have to.
So, after climbing up into the vent with the help of a discarded bottle cap he could use as a step stool, he curled up in a corner to sleep again.
……………………………………..
Kai woke up very suddenly the next day as cold air washed over him. He shivered, the metal soon sucking the heat from his body. He stumbled to his feet and out of the vent, pressing his body to the carpet trying to get warm.
Of course. It was summer now and the vents were pumping cool air through the base. Kai couldn’t just walk around in there when he was this small. At least, not without some protection. He’d freeze to death. It was a miracle he woke up before he did so this time. If he’d gotten any smaller he would have been at mercy to their air currents in there, maybe even floating up and becoming a part of the dust.
Kai needed somewhere else. The vents couldn’t provide a shelter for him. If he died in his sleep he would be in serious trouble.
After a moment of thinking, he realized he knew where he could stay. It was getting there that would be the problem.
The laundry room.
He bit his lip nervously. He’d only been in there once and had a very unpleasant experience in the dryer. He didn’t quite die, no, but he almost did, which was worse.
He ignored the memory of a hammer claw to the back of his head after he didn’t die in there and started off, walking down the long halls. It wasn’t quite morning yet, it seemed as the lights were still off besides the occasional one for emergencies. The darkness stretched on and on, as did time and Kai was beginning to worry about where he would hide if someone came down the hall. He supposed he’d just have to curl up against the wall and hope no one looked at him. All he had to do was get to the laundry room. It was two hallways down from here. He could do it.
Kai, edged on by nervous energy, started jogging down the hall, the carpet scratchy against his feet. Still, it took him an hour to get to the next turn, and he had to stop and sit down to take a breather.
It was just as he was getting up again that the lights came on. He froze looking down the hallway, but he heard nothing. The lights must be on a timer, then. This time he took the next hall at a full sprint, trying not to think about the fact that this hall was where some of the bedrooms were. He needed to get past all of the doors before anyone got up, and he had no idea who would be up first.
That question was answered as one door opened. Kai tried to stop, not wanting his movement to make him easy to pick out and fell to the floor hard enough that he got carpet burn all across his side as he laid facing the wall.
The floor vibrated as someone walked down the hall, humming and yawning. It sounded like Technical. Kai tensed as the steps passed him, but Technical kept going. Kai got back to his feet, breathing hard before taking off again, his heart thumping hard as he did so.
He finally turned into the next hall and saw the door to the laundry room, the gap under the door promising him safety. He ran faster despite the pain in his side and legs, gasping for air as he reached it, slowing down and leaning heavily against the wall for a moment, clutching at the stitch in his side, ignoring the pain of the rug burn.
Finally, he crouched under the door, getting up on the cool tile and looking around. He decided to make for the dryer, going a bit slower now, feeling more comfortable behind the closed door. The room was pretty warm despite the tile on the floor, and as he slid under the dryer, standing up in the pocket underneath, Kai found himself comfortably warm for the first time in weeks. Still, he wouldn’t say no to the piles of dust bunnies and lint that he also found to get a bit warmer. He made quick work of building a little nest and then laying inside, more lint piled on top. He was warm, and laying in what could be somewhat labeled as a bed made him feel human again, so with that, he closed his eyes and fell asleep.
…………………………………
Waking up in a bed was nearly as nice as falling asleep in one. Kai opened his eyes , still curled up in the fluff. The dryer had been started while he was asleep, and was running merrily above him, warming the space up to truly delightful levels.
Eventually he rolled out of the fluff and sat up. He ached from how far he’d run, his side still hurt from his carpet burn, and he was starving, but he was not so tired anymore. Apparently all of those naps really helped him out.
He sat down again, grabbing fluff and, after some minutes of trying some things out, started matting it into something he could wear as clothing. He worked on it for hours and his fingers hurt when he was done, but he soon had a cloak of sorts. He pulled apart the fluff in the middle and pulled it on, finding a piece of string and tying it on as a belt to keep it closed.
A bit more prepared for his day, he started scavenging. There were some buttons and other random trinkets around, but nothing much besides. Nothing he could really use. He supposed that was fine. He had shelter and clothing. At least, for now. He would need to find a new place of shelter before he got too big for this one. The top of his head brushed against the dryer, now, so he’d need to find one soon. He headed towards the back and rolled out to find a slightly larger space there. It would keep him for a day or two, he supposed, but he needed to find somewhere near a vent. That way he could travel through the base without being spotted. He’d be safe from the heat signature scanners for about a week. He knew that from past experience when he was free. He just needed to get out before then. 7 days. That was plenty of time, right?
He’d have to leave it alone for now. He was getting to a size where he might be overlooked, but it was getting risky. The halls in the base were pretty empty and he'd be easy to spot soon, so he’d have to wait until nightfall. Then he would find something to eat and drink and get into the vents. If he was going to be in the vents, though, he’d need more clothing, so he got back to work gathering lint and dust and turning it into a piece of fabric.
When the lights went off again, Kai had simply been waiting. He made enough fabric to fit him when he was bigger and bundled it up with some useful things he found laying around before he left the safety of the dryer. He struggled to get under the door, but managed it and started trekking down the hall. He would need some food and water soon, and while he hated the idea, he realized he would have to eat off of the floor. The kitchen was usually a mess at this point, so before he went to wander in the vents, he made his way to the kitchen.
The door had been left open and the smell coming from the room was heavenly. One of the sidekicks probably made dinner. They were both really good at cooking, mostly because the older heroes didn’t want to, so they made their lackey’s do it.
Still, Kai found some water that had dripped out onto the floor while someone had been washing their hands and he got onto his knees, sipping it up and trying to ignore the fact that he was drinking off a kitchen floor. He imagined he was a dashing action hero drinking from an oasis instead, which helped, but made him feel rather silly when he sat back up and wiped his mouth.
Then, he got to scavenging. He wouldn’t eat here, but he picked up food and crumbs from the floor, putting it in his bag. He couldn’t wait to be tall enough to climb the rungs on the drawers and get to some real food. That is, unless he managed to get out of here tonight. He doubted it. He was too short to do much and he’d probably have to find some string to help him get out safely anyways, so tonight was not the night. He would instead eat and probably get some more sleep. Tomorrow night would be for some serious scavenging, and the next day? Well, if he was lucky, maybe he’d be out by then.
He gathered up the crumbs and left, quickly finding one of the vents that didn’t have a cover. He walked in, heading in deeper and turning a corner before sitting down on the cold metal and opening his bag.
The crumbs were hard from exposure to the air, but as he bit into them, he still salivated like he was eating the tastiest morsels at a king’s feast. This was the first thing he’d eaten in months and it was absolutely everything to him. Money and fame meant nothing in comparison to the first swallows of food he’d had in his stomach for months and he couldn’t help but begin to cry. He cried over how good it tasted, he cried over the full feeling in his stomach, he cried to mourn the person he used to be, and he cried because, despite everything that happened to him, they hadn’t broken him.
So, he ate the rest of the food with tears rolling down his face and wrapped up in his handmade blanket to sleep.
