Deity Guide - Hekate
One phrase to describe this Goddess? It’s complicated!
Tumblr media
Who is Hekate?
Often called the Goddess of Witchcraft, Hekate (or Hecate) is a Greek goddess who reigns over many domains. She is associated with magic, witchcraft, the moon, necromancy, and spirits. She is also known to be the goddess of boundaries, crossroads, doorways, and, due to being a Goddess of these liminal spaces, became a Goddess of the darkness of the underworld.
Hekate was also worshipped as a hearth goddess, and was thought to protect the home.
The other two deities in the tripartite with Hekate are Persephone and Demeter according to some; to others, the other two are Artemis and Selene or Diana and Luna. In other forms it is simply her threefold nature that makes her a triple goddess.
Specifically in Rome they would celebrate Hekate in conjunction with Diana and Luna as three aspects of the same deity.
Parents and Siblings
Parents could include:
Perses and Asteria (most popular/common)
Zeus and Asteria
Zeus and Hera
Nyx
Sibling could include:
Chariclo from Pereses and Asteria
Any of Zeus’ other children
Any of Nyx’s other children
Lovers or Partners
Some believe her to be a virgin goddess and is unmarried.
Phorbus or Phorcys
Aeetes
Children
(If you believe that she is not a virgin goddess)
Aegialeus
Circe
Empusa
Medea
Scylla
Epithets
Perseis
Apotropaia, the one that turns away/protects.
Brimo, angry/terrifying.
Chthonia, of the earth/underworld.
Enodia, she on the way/road.
Klêidouchos, holding the keys.
Kourotrophos, nurse of children.
Krokopeplos, saffron cloaked.
Melinoe
Phosphoros or Lampadephoros, bringing or bearing light.
Propolos, who serves/attends.
Propulaia/Propylaia, before the gate.
Soteria, savior.
Trimorphe, three-formed.
Triodia/Trioditis, who frequents crossroads.
Notes
She likely started out as a singular deity, only becoming a tripartite in later literature.
She was a triple goddess long before he invention of the Triple moon goddess from Wicca, though the two get conflated with each other regularly.
In modern practice to some in her triple goddess form, she embodies the “crone”, Persephone embodies the “Maiden”, and Demeter is the “Mother”, one of the biggest examples of the modern “Maiden, Mother, Crone” trope.
She was popular among the witches of Thessaly.
Since the Romans assimilated her into their pantheon, Hekate is sometimes considered to be the same deity as Artemis and Selene. Even though older texts give no evidence of Hekate in relation to the moon.
Though often depicted as dark or even crude, the older texts depict Hecate as warm, “tender-hearted”, and generous.
That being said, in some texts she’s known specifically for being cruel.
Archeologists have found “curse tablets” where a person would write out a curse on lead foil and roll it up before dropping it down a well.
Hekate was often left offerings of dog meat.
She is often depicted in art holding one or two torches or holding a key.
Her name may come from the Greek word Hekatos, which means “worker from afar”.
Her name could also come from Greek Hekas meaning "far off" or "remote".
She would often have shrines built for her in people’s homes and at crossroads.
Despite being the goddess of magic, offerings were sacrificed to her at household altars to ward off and protect individuals or households from witchcraft.

The major difference between Tolkien’s Valar pantheon and a real-life pantheon is the absence of all the fuzzy edges of gods’ roles and characteristics.
Tolkien’s mythology: This is Vana. She is a minor goddess. She is the sister of Yavanna. She is the goddess of youth and growing things, associated with flora and fauna but especially with flowers. In her dwellings she had gardens filled with golden flowers, and she frequently came to the forests of her husband Oromë. She liked to dance with her maidens.
Real mythology: This is Hekate. She is a minor goddess. She is the only daughter of Asteria and Perses. Or of Zeus and Asteria. Or her mother might have been Hera. Or Nyx. Or Pheraea. Or Demeter. Or Leto. ANYWAY. She’s a Titan, but she sided with the Olympians in the Titanomachy. She’s the goddess of liminal spaces, passing between the realms of earth, sea, and sky. She guides the spirits of the dead into Hades and also takes messages from the mortals to the gods. She’s strongly associated with Artemis, often shown as a huntress in a virgin’s short dress with a bow, hunting deer. She is associated with night and the moon. In one story, Artemis turned Iphigenia into the goddess Hekate when Iphigenia was sacrificed by her father. Except, in another story Hekate was originally a mortal who scorned Artemis, whose retribution eventually led to Hekate’s suicide?? Hekate is depicted as a triple goddess, but sometimes also in a group of three goddesses, such as Diana, Luna and Hekate, or Demeter, Persephone, and Hekate. She was later syncretized with Juno, Bellona, Isis, and Ereshkigal, and was associated with leadership and war. Hekate is also the goddess of sacred groves, wildernesses, travel, crossroads, doorways, and gateways, and her image is placed at important gateways and at crossroads. She is often depicted with two torches. She’s also the goddess of vengeful spirits, ghosts, nightmares, madness, and witchcraft, so if you don’t appease the spirits of the dead and Hekate, she may let the ghosts get you! Also some cults called her “soteira”, the savior, and appeal to her for divine epiphanies, and early cults in Caria may have seen her as the supreme goddess.  She’s a virgin goddess and never married, except that sometimes she’s the mother of the monster Scylla by either Phorbas or Phorcys. Or the mother of the sorceresses Circe and Medea. As Hekate Enodia she is also considered a goddess who protects children? For some reason?? Oh! and she’s associated with dogs and horses. And snakes. And lions.
Edit: I forgot to add, she lives in a CAVE. with a belt of FLAMING SERPENTS.

Hey, Nikky! Happy STS! :D Hope all's well in your corner of the woods! That said, catching up with the WIPs that popped up while I was gone, and this question popped into mind and won't leave. If you took the cast of Calypso's 'verse and plopped them into Superhero World and vice-versa, what would happen?
Hi Jax! Happy STS, my corner of the woods is doing well (I’ve written words!! Words of. literal homework assistance, but they’re words and it’s sweet). Hope all is well in your bit of the woods as well
Ooh, that is a fun question!!!
Calypso would be a villain, causing chaos for the fun of it. Hades would sorta be like Query, in which he’s housing a bunch of troublemakers (Thanatos, Styx). Speaking of them, Calypso would drag Thanatos into chaos causing and Styx would be causing her own. No prompting needed. Hades would… not do a whole lot (maybe he grew up in a Super family/team with his siblings and took the fall for a mission gone bad and this is his ‘retirement’). Amphitrite would have a little business going, would have thieves and such for hire. Davy Jones would just. Be a very unlucky civilian that Calypso drags into the dark side because he like. cracked a joke in the middle of a robbery of hers or something. Leucothea’s a vigilante who helps out people when fights break out, though she still knows Calypso. And Scylla… hmm. Scylla would be a hero (and most compared to Celeste), until she loses control of her power or stumbles into her power or just. Gets sorta villanized for something and despite her attempts to fix her reputation, she falls off the bandwagon and ends up working alongside Charybdis, who runs a larger organization/is a big villain figure who has some control over smaller villains that’s country wide. One will work on the eastern side, other on the west. Didn’t put it into words super well, but they would be those not-known-except-by-name scary figures. You know what I mean.
As for the super people (well, Masks and Trust/Celeste and Vega-adjacent people) moving into Ancient Greece (sort of? Not really. Uhh— super people into a god world that is not quite Ancient Greece but a parallel version of it): Vega is an older goddess, probably like Nyx: a goddess of the night or something similar. She takes (or has?) a few smaller god(desse)s under her wing. And… vague introduction to the kids (I should do that, huh?): a knowledge/prophet goddess who sparks wars/feuds (she’d be responsible for a Cassandra situation), a god of the monsterous within the humane, a god of desperation or determination. Things like that. Anyways. She’s an older goddess, once super revered until she got bored and stepped back, let those she mentored run as they please. She takes a mortal-seeming form and bumps into another little-known goddess, Celeste, who would be… a goddess of something niche. I thought of stars but it’d be reflections or hope or something. Something small no one pays much kind to but is super present in one’s life. She’s a minor goddess only because she holds reign over a niche and she’s content (in a settled-for-this-and-like-that-I’m-helping-but-sorta-hate-it-isnt-doing-anything-to-change-it way) with the few sacrifices and pleas she gets. She’s content, but not all that happy. Bottom line, you know.
That was fun to answer! Thanks for the question :D

Since Apollo and Hekate are both going to be in the next Hades game do you think the devs will go with the version of Scylla being the result of a fling they had?
Food for thought. They did have a bit about Nyx and Ares having a thing so, maybe...

(For Last Legacy) M4 + other characters of your choice with some cute habits, features etc. you headcanon them have? Like in one of your headcanon posts you wrote Felix playing with his fingers when anxious, like its a nervous tick of his,do you have more stuff you imagine them possibly having?
I think the little things add to the characters
Characters are moshed together because I couldn't write them in order
Like you (and I) already mentioned, Felix plays with his fingers a lot.
Similarly I think both Anisa and Sage fiddle with their gloves, but Anisa moreso
Sage drums his fingers, usually to the beat of a lullaby he used to sing for Tulsi. She and Balsam are the only ones that recognize it.
Balsam brushes the tip of his tail over his palm(s) when he's thinking about something
Even when Scylla is drinking something other than wine she still holds it like a wine glass and swirls it. Force of habit.
Lucan uses Tulsi's head as an arm rest.
Saaros carries a lucky gem around in their pocket. Really it's just some random shiny thing Azimuth gave them because they worry so much but Saaros doesn't know that, they think it's enchanted
Florian likes to put fresh flower clippings in all the frequently-used rooms of Blackthorn
Rime unknowingly frosts the area around him when he's worried about something
Tulsi has to tuck her tail into her pants when she works and that's why you never see it. Call her cottontail and she'll cut you (or at least threaten to)
Sage does the slow blink thing cats do when he's happy
Elowen preens her hair a lot. Not because she cares how it looks (she knows it looks good) it's just her feline instincts kicking in
Does Astraea have pens or is it just quills? If they have pens Escell taps his when he does paperwork. If it's a quill he fluffs the feather against his wrist.
Ayanna doesn't even check if doors are open she just immediately goes to lockpicking.
Tulsi would be really good at The Knife Game because she that's how she tests her knife's sharpness.
Lucan bounces in his seat/in place
Does Astraea have cigarettes??? If so Escell and Scylla are lighting up. The smell is way too strong for any of the ilephtas.
Whenever Rime buys snacks he reflexively gets a second one for Felix
Saaros is terrible at remembering birthdays, including their own
Balsam likes to sneak up from behind and scare people
Lucan will pester someone until they pet him. Sorry. He loves headpats and ear rubs it calms him down.
Does weed exist on Astraea??? I think the Griefers would smoke that. Actually that's a lie the smell would kill them. I think the Griefers would do edibles
Apparently Bob Ross was a stoner so I think I can say Florian grows weed
Felix taps his feet
Anisa paces around everywhere
Rime doodles when he's trying to figure something out. What does he doodle? Flowers and plants and animals and the other Starsworn. One time he doodled a rather scandalous version of Sage shirtless and Sage found it and teased him for days. Rime threatened to stab him and Sage said Yeah He Knows Rime Wants To Penetrate Him 😏
I blame @evanox for all my Sage/Rime content btw. Good job on selling that to me Nyx
Anyways onwards and upwards
Sage and Elowen are both afraid of heights. One time they went on a bridge with Lucan and he started shaking the bridge and they freaked the fuck out and were clinging to the ropes. Beat Lucan up afterwards but it was totally worth it
I think that when ilephtas feel more acute emotions, their animal instincts are stronger. Sage purring when he's happy, Tulsi's nose twitching when she's frustrated, Balsam kicks his leg when he's anxious, Elowen is constantly looking around to defend her territory, Lucan tends to freeze for a second if people look at him, Rime will keep watch while his friends are eating, and Ayanna flicks her tail when she's annoyed
Anisa carries sweets/snaccs, both to snack on and to give to others to snack on.
Sage gets bored when he's cooking so he dances around a lot.
The more dramatic Felix is acting, the better of a mood he's in.

Hypnovember Day 28: Siren
Odysseus had tied himself to the mast, but he had never quite gotten their song out of his head. It echoed through him still years later. On dull days, when his mind wasn't otherwise occupied, he would float back to its' promises of peace and pleasure and love. It was a spell that neither loving wife nor child could break.
He began to ponder and plan and apply all of his fabled genius to this uncanny desire. He had his scribes and wise men gather all the information about the infamous sirens that they could and bring it to his chambers. He neglected both sleep and food in his studies. Both family and kingly duties fell to the wayside as he worked.
(Somewhere, the goddess Aphrodite smiled- her vengeance finally underway.)
Finally, Odysseus arrived at an acceptable plan. Heedless of consequence, he stole away from his castle under the night goddess Nyx's dark shadow. He took only a small ship and a few reliable soldiers with him.
For seven days and seven nights, the men quested in the mountains looking for Odysseus's quarry. Clever Odysseus had his men each shout a different phrase. Each would wait a moment, listening for a a response.
Finally, he found her. "I need you!" he shouted over the mountains.
"I need you!" his own voice came back.
He sent the men in the direction of that voice. They brought back a blank eyed creature vaguely shaped like a woman. Her eyes were sad and distant, as if she could not quite focus on anything but her internal sorrow. Even her body had faded to the point where a strong grab would go right through her physical form and fingers would meet thumbs on the other side.
Odysseus got down on one knee to show respect to the creature. He asked, "Noble nymph, will you help me?"
"Help me," the creature echoed blankly.
"I need you to accompany me on a voyage," he said.
"A voyage," the voice echoed. The creature continued to stare morosely ahead as if entirely unaware of her surroundings.
Odysseus boldy waved his hand in front of her face.
No response.
"Gather her and bring her along with me," he commanded his men.
They took the nymph by the shoulders and guided her. "With me," she forlornly echoed.
Odysseus and his crew prepared to sail near Scylla. Crew members whispered behind his back that he had gone mad. They noted his frenetic energy and his lack of sleep. Those who had seen his captain's desk said it was full of strange drawings- those of birds with sharp claws and the heads of women. The soldiers began to avoid their king as much as possible.
On the fateful day of his plans, King Odysseus gave each soldier his instructions. He was to put wax in his ears and sail on a precharted course- regardless of what might happen or what Odysseus may otherwise indicate. Even more strangely, Odysseus demanded that he and the nymph be tied to the boat's mast when going through the waters with their ears unplugged. The crewmen were secretly glad of this guidance- the manic light in Odysseus's eyes had grown more and more intense and it was relieving to put him in a position where he could do no harm. The nymph, in contrast, had no expression and was led and tied to the mast with neither cry nor protest. It was unclear if she was even aware she was being tied.
As they sailed, Odysseus began to hear the first strains of the song that had haunted his mind and dreams. It spoke of warmth and love and complete understanding. He felt a tear roll down his eye as he strained against his ropes. He felt his first taste of apple and his first kiss and nostalgia for his lost youth all at once.
This time, though, the song was even more beautiful than in his memory. Not only did it come from the sea but it was echoed by the nymph besides him. Odysseus was filled with bliss- straining to touch either the siren or the nymph or anyone connected with such beautiful feelings and promises.
The ropes held. This was just as Odysseus had intended. However, clever Odysseus had been successful in his unnatural lure. The ship soldiers saw first one, then two large birds with the heads of gorgeous maidens fly and perch upon the boat. They seemed entranced in their steps- entirely ignoring the seamen's attempts to wave them off. The bird women walked slowly towards Odysseus.
Odysseus saw the most beautiful sight. His loves were returning to him! His tears flowed even more strongly in relief and joy. He would finally be theirs. At last.
He barely felt the pain of the first tear of their claws. It was intense and sudden- like love should be. Their song reassured him that he had done the right thing- that they loved him, that they needed him, that he would forever be theirs now. That there was nothing more painfully ecstatic than being consumed and swallowed by their love.
He heard and understood. He was truly grateful.
The crewmen, stunned into silence, saw the monstrous creatures tear their smiling, laughing, and crying captain apart. Their teeth were sharp and full of sinew. Their claws were precise and stained with blood. It took mere moments for the hero of legend to become carrion. No one spoke. None dared to interfere.
The sailors continued to gaze, terrified as the monsters lovingly and carefully ripped the ropes from the woman-resembling creature and laid her gently upon their backs. It was if she was weightless. While no one was looking, light had suddenly returned to her dead-seeming eyes and joy to her lovely face. She glowed like a goddess. If they could have heard, they also would have been bewitched by the beautiful melody that passed between her and the monsters- a melody that echoed adoration and enchantment and love found anew.
With a sudden gust of air, the eerie group disappeared in flight- vanishing like a midday storm into the horizon. Like a storm, they left an almost supernatural stillness behind them.
And a body.
Well, what was left of one.
Without discussion, the soldiers unanimously prudently sailed on for a while longer. It wasn't until they were well past any island's rocks that they removed their wax and threw Odysseus's remains overboard.
They swore each other then to an oath of secrecy- an oath in the sight of the gods. No others needed to know of what had happened on this day. And, to their dying breath, none spoke out about the sad fate of their once-great king.
And so- History herself has forgotten.
