You see him in flashes.

An ear, nestled in brown curls, any other features passing by too fast to catch mote details. Behind you, in the bathroom mirror, walking down the hall, mouth twisted into a grimace as he looks down at his hands. A loud cackle as you talk to an empty house—first only to yourself, then, cautiously, indirectly to him.

Finally, when the moon is full and even your curtains don’t shut off the stream of light into your bedroom entirely, you get tired of it. You get tired of staring at your ceiling, on your back in the dark, until a headache throbs in your temples and the sun rises on you, a lonely insomniac in a house too big for one.

There’s the sound of a light footstep outside your door, and it creaks barely open. No one’s outside.

“Hi,” you say, a half-question, feeling silly talking to the air. “Can you stop with the sneaking around? I don’t have the patience, right now.”

A brown eye, under that same swooping hair. A hand, pushing the door open.

A full picture. Your ghost is a young man, in the full glow of health, skin pale and lips curved into a perpetual smile that makes him look very smug indeed. He’s dressed in modern clothing, if a little out of date, and you can see the outline of what could be a phone but is probably a ZEN (complete with earbuds!) in his pocket.

“I didn’t know you could see me,” he says, cautiously. You throw a hand up in the air, it’s whatever, and enjoy the way it bounces limply upon returning to the surface of your bed. He perches next to your bedside, a grey-and-blue inverted image. The ghost keeping vigil over the living.

“Just a little bit, before. I wasn’t sure talking to you would work.”

“You can see ghosts?”

“No,” you shrug, turning on your side to look at him. “Not usually. Just you.”

He looks pleased by this, and you have to stifle a laugh. You have a vain spirit, then, wandering the halls of your parents’ home.

Your grandmother always told you you had a strong intuition, a sensitivity to the world that would set you apart. This isn’t your first encounter with spirits (how could it be, growing up with her), and you can feel that this one is not malicious, not hungry. He’s simply... here, for no discernible purpose other than to coexist with you for now. Separate stories living together.

“I’m—” you give him a nickname, an old one that makes nostalgia flow through you so strongly you stop breathing for a moment. It’s true, he feels safe, but you can never know. “Who are you?”

“Tooru,” he says, and the corners of his pretty mouth turn down. “It’s always a little hard for me to remember the rest of it. Oikawa, I think.”

“That suits you,” you nod. Your eyelids feel heavy, closing until the boy in front of you is a smear of colors, a stained-glass picture. “Sorry, I—” you yawn, and force your vision to focus on him. It’s not just you, though; he seems blurrier at the edges now. You can see your night table through him. You wonder how much energy he has to expend to be corporeal. How much sleep do the dead get? “I didn’t really sleep.”

“I know,” he says, and his voice is like rain falling on the windowpane, steady and soothing. “I’ll be here. Okay?”

“Okay,” you close your eyes, and you know that behind them, Tooru with swooping brown hair and a family name a few steps ahead of him is fading back into invisibility. You reach a hand out, blindly, palm up.

He takes it; you draw it towards you and kiss the cold fingers. Then you sleep, deeper and sweeter then you have since you came home.

This haunting is a love story.

I remember seeing this quote about Susan Sontag, after she wrote Notes On Camp (tone marker: one of the most famous queer treatises in history) when everyone was speculating, wait what the fuck is Susan Sontag a leSBiAn ? Is she BiSExuAL ? (Tone marker: Da VInkY?) Is she allowed write about this?? And I forget who said it but there's this quote that's like, "Does the author of Notes On Camp even need to come out?"

Like, the book was so obviously queer, so obviously and intentionally centred the interests and wellbeing and knowledge of the queer community, that like 1) it couldn't not betray her queerness (which ofc it turned out she was in private) and 2) it didn't matter because her personal identity was irrelevant to the heavy lifting her writing was doing. Like if the work is queer, like deeply textually and subtextually queer, intentionally queer, and it's having a positive impact on the queer community, then that work is queer regardless of who made it and how publically queer they are or are not.

(And also ftr being openly queer is not a guarantee of your work being actually meaningfully queer, either. We know this because Pete Buttigieg exists.)

Anywas I think about that quote literally all the time. Like with Con O'Neil before he came out, or Taika Waiti. Occasionally people will jump all over some minutiae some celebrity said in an interview and pick apart how publically gay you have to be to say x or y, and it's homophobic to say z unless you're gay, or we're gonna willfully misinterpret everything you say. Or whatever. But what about when we're talking about people who have been hiring queer people, creating queer stories, for in some cases decades?

Like Con O'Neil has been playing beautiful well rounded queer people since before a lot of y'all were born. And did he ofc ultimately come out, yeah. But did he have to? What did it change, really? Does the actor who originated Izzy Hands and Val Uncle and Michael Scarborough Ahoy! have to come out? Does a producer and star of Our Flag Means Death have to come out? Why does the author of Notes On Camp need to come out? And for whose benefit?

Like ok listen at some point idk if you're on the lease at gay house but you've been sleeping on the couch long enough that you do just live here now. It just seems plain rude not to let you get your mail delivered.

i literally could not care less about fake dating aus they are so boring to me.

any variations thereupon are also boring to me: arranged marriage/marriage so i'll inherit this money/etc etc

same goes for only one bed like. ok. who cares?????? who cares

okay i kind of lied a tv show pulled off the only one bed trope once and i was so not mad about it but they actually managed to do something interesting with it

also i feel like the same goes for enemies to lovers - it has to be done really well for it to work but most of the time it's just like "meh you're the worst!!" "good i hate you also!" but we're ✨ attracted ✨ to each other so it doesn't really matter.

also a weirdly specific one but when people write fandom fusion fics so like if you have a pairing from one fandom and write them as if they're mulder and scully from the xfiles or whatever, but another character would fit that role better, but then they'll keep it that way because of the ship. it bugs me so much. if it's not as specific like if it's pacific rim fusion and they're just meant to be drift compatible or whatever and not taking the main character's arcs it's less of an issue for me

this is maybe not a trope, but i hate it when people steal other character's traits to give it to their fave/character bashing/etc. grow up. get a job.

also the cinderella complex of acting like one character is just soooooo mistreated by everybody else, everyone is just a huge meanie to them all the time, like yawn 😩😩

especially when the character in question happens to be treated no worse than any other character in the actual narrative, or they happen to be a character who's actually really assertive in canon and then in fics they'll just be a complete walkover. like literally what happened here.

i also get really annoyed by huge fandoms where there are plenty of characters to write about but all of the fics are almost exclusively about one (1) ship and this really becomes a problem when it ignores/bashes other characters like i said above

soulmate fics aren't an immediate won't read for me but they have to stand out in some way

halsdkjkfslj this just makes me sound like i hate shipping fics and it's kind of true but i actually love a lot of tropes and shippy tropes like i love aus, role reversals, 5+1, etc. i guess i just hate when characters are ~ forced together ~ into love by contrived circumstances. it's so....eyeroll-y to me. it's like when you watch sleepless in seattle and you get to the end and the movie's like well! those two sure are in love! and you're like no! they've known each for two minutes! they're not in love!

same thing for most of these fake dating/enemies to lovers/bed sharing, it's like people are like "well these tropes are how you get to xyz" instead of actually developing the relationship alongside it by showing how feelings for each other have begun/deepened. like that one bed sharing scene i mentioned, it shows how awkward the "relationship" is because they are like okay i guess we have to share a bed but i need my white noise machine but you want to watch cyrano de bergerac on the tv but we can't POSSIBLY sleep head to head foot to foot it has to be a head foot foot head type situation. but cyrano de bergerac is french so i'll read off the subtitles to you because you can watch it in the mirror and as you fall asleep it's the part where cyrano is admitting his love and i'm saying it softly because i know you're asleep but i'm starting to realize i'm a little in love with you too.

like the LAYERS there.

but more often that not it's like fic writers assume that you will just automatically assume that that is what is happening rather than actually writing it. (this is a problem with published fiction too, particularly romance, since it seems that my biggest gripes are with that general genre lol)
