Running away to your best friend's house. They didn't know they were dead and you saved them. But you know and you'll never forget. Favorite part: If you're gonna plead, then plead with me. I'm the one who knows the story.

Lost in the wilderness (not taking care of yourself and you're not taking messages) Favorite Part: I have built a machine that built a machine and pulls the callouses straight from your hands. And if they were there from digging for some bitter truth, well ain't that too bad?

You love someone but you are terrified of hurting them. You hold them close and they start to bleed. Favorite part: I'll donate my warmth and my hands will keep you safe, the cold will wither while we wait, but surely some must die.

A moody, heavy song (which you can sulk to when you are trapped in a torture compound) Favorite part: Falling up the stairs. Heaven's heavy-handed. Today, it's theirs.

You're a rugged cowboy who escaped certain death and had to leave your former life behind, but at least the stage and the crowd love you. (Alternate versions are in the album) Favorite part: We could clean it up, starry-eye my desperation. It looks better as romance.

There’s no limit to the disbelief people are willing to suspend if you can marry real emotion with outrageous circumstance.

If you can make an audience question a character’s reckless and goofy-ass decisions just before realizing they would do the same thing, they’ll leave changed.

Rian Johnson has figured out how to thoroughly eviscerate greed and demagoguery with silliness and he’s my hero because of that.

The Legend of Vox Machina

Magic happens, real magic, when a group of people trust each other enough to be vulnerable with the stories in their souls.

God of War: Ragnarok

Making characters think they have no agency in their own lives is an *excellent* way to showcase their intellect and resilience.

Avatar: The Way of Water

Even with a simple core story, you can provide a rich, rich experience through layers of theme injected into setting.

Horizon II: Forbidden West

I would take a course on the way Ashly Burch gave each of her characters — WHO ARE FUCKING CLONES — the slightest tweaks in tone to differentiate character. A must for audio drama creators.

Werewolf By Night

Every story has a rhythm, and every medium can express that rhythm in a unique way. More composers should direct.

Saga: Volume 10

Grief is sneaky, and characters need time to process it properly. Sometimes the strongest way to communicate emotional distress is to make the character think they’re over it… until they aren’t.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The classic struggle is between solving problems with intellect or violence, but Captain Pike teaches us that the first step is always empathy.

Rings of Power

The most touching conflict is sometimes simply “I’m mad at you because I missed you so much.”

Here at the completion of season one, I’m wicked thankful for the resurgence of audio dramas. I spent years querying my stories to agents with varying levels of success, and the process of “write, pitch, wait, be told my story is good, submit a full manuscript, then get rejected after waiting a year” was NOT conducive to me maintaining a healthy relationship with my creativity. In fact, I can honestly say that it contributed to several reeling OCD symptoms I’ve just now figured out how to work with. That’s not to knock any agents I submitted to — they have an impossibly difficult job that doesn’t pay out easily. I’m just not wired for the traditional query process.

But because of podcasts, I got to tell the story of Pockets in a format that let the characters really exist as an extension of myself — in some ways more literally than others. So for all the peaks and valleys of life online, let’s make sure to be thankful that now, if someone needs to tell a story, they can find a place to do it — and someone might just find it.
