VITRINES : Art Spaces/interiors/interventions. 3 by Russell Moreton Via Flickr: Anselm Kiefer : In the Annenberg Courtyard Velimir Khlebnikov: Fates of Nations: The New Theory of War Anselm Kiefer often dedicates his works to intriguing figures of the past, be they poets or philosophers. This piece is one of a number of works emerging from Kiefer’s ongoing exploration of the Russian Futurist avant-garde writer, theorist and absurdist Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922). After years of study, Khlebnikov concluded that a major sea battle took place every 317 years, or multiples thereof. Kiefer celebrates this heroic and ludicrous activity with a work that is both monument and anti-monument. Measuring almost 17 metres in total and consisting of two large glass vitrines, Kiefer creates a transparent, reflective sea-scape in three dimensions that calls to mind the Romantic sublime of painters from JMW Turner to Caspar David Friedrich. Kiefer uses the frames of the vitrines to stage a mysterious drama, in which viewers, seeing each other and their own reflections, become participants. www.royalacademy.org.uk/article/kiefer-and-chipperfield-t...

International Conference on English Literature and Linguistics.
Tumblr media
Language is at a nexus of interrelationships between individuals, society and culture. The interface between language and literature has been the object of considerable interdisciplinary research on methods of analysis that can be applied across the two fields and their sub-areas. Less research has focused, however, on the influence of the new technologies on this interface, which transcends borders and cultures, advanced visualization along with the process of translation adds additional dimensions to the already complex picture. As the technological landscape continues to evolve, ideas related through literature, other modes of artistic expression and language are part of that which is being researched through the Digital Humanities. Understanding culture, diversity and inclusion through technology and discussing ways to support the creative research being conducted adds even more unique complexity to our evolving conference themes. This event will be organized by Universal Research Cluster at the city of New York, New York, USA.
Conference Details: International Conference on English Literature and Linguistics, on 17th Jul 2024 at New York, New York, USA .

One random thing that I love is the tireless effort of birders/ornithologists to try and phonetically render all the bird calls into text in an accurate manner. I am so bad at processing sounds that I could literally never do this. Like how many times would you have to listen to that bird call before deciding which letters to place in what order??
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have been challenging myself to listen to a bird call, try and write down my translation, then look up the accepted birder one to compare… let’s just say I am not fluent in bird

Is this a gorgeous and beautifully drawn webcomic or gorgeous and beautifully drawn art only?
Art only I'm afraid ´v`'
I love comics as an artform and I wish I could create one about these dogs, but making comics is hard work. It's extremely time consuming and artistically challenging and I just don't think I have what it takes to branch out into that right now.

I have a question I need asked:
And please, if you want to, type in the tags or replies if reading numbers is important to mentally understand what time it is OR if seeing a "picture" of the time is required to mentally understand what time it is (i'm hoping this makes sense)

From Roier's 02/22/2024 VOD
TRANSLATION (source: a bit of reading english twt update accounts, bit of my own translating, please correct me on anything)
Cucurucho: What is your biggest accomplishment on the island?
Roier: What did he say?
Missa: He asked how big is your dick?
Roier: No mames. Sleeping 2cm, erected 3cm. (Richarlyson starts hitting him) What's going on? Why's he hitting me?
Missa: He said that he hasn't accomplished anything. He is a loser at this game.
Roier: Hey, what does that mean, dumbass?! What did you say?

[bc there was a bit of talk on the dash about cubitos being mischaracterized bc of language barriers/viewers only sticking to POV(s) in their own language, I wanted to bring up a clip of one of my favorite cubitos that I haven't seen on tumblr before which, wtf how, it fucking kills me every time! seriously love it, it's but one example of q!Missa being a Little Shit.]

We're all familiar with how most of the Star Trek shows have their dialogue in that somewhat formal stilted manner that plenty of people have poked fun at but also it kind of makes sense in an era of universal translators that people would make a habit of speaking clearly and avoiding slang/metaphors to ensure their points are well translated. I know that was never the intention (and a lot of newer trek shows go for more informal dialogue) but hm. Food for thought.

And, process !!
Tumblr media
The jump btwn the second to last and last always surprise me whenever I make one of these because I always forget to take snapshots after I start painting. It's always like: oh yeah heres the lineart with some colors- BOOM fully finished✨️
What he's holding are the Austrian imperial scepter and orb, seen below:
Tumblr media
I was going to draw the crown too but decided I don't hate myself that much(maybe some other day), and gave him a golden laurel crown, bcs I'm obsessed with that as a motif, and also its very remincient of the boy king statue that started this whole thing!
There's some symbolism of this, both intentionally but also just historically. I love that the orb represents that the monarch is holding the world in their hand, basically every old monarchy has one of those, and I think it's very cool for symbolism. But also bcs of that, I was forced to basically draw catholic fanart so, you win some you lose some. The star halo above him head is both to reference those religious statues with star crowns(I saw them a lot in Europe and they imprinted onto my brain), as well as: his four championships of course!

so the thing about the sloppy hp worldbuilding is that it often does something interesting by accident
today's case study: the Malfoy family motto.
(it seems to have been a piece of production design set dressing, but they ran all that kind of stuff by JKR, and I see this frickin motto quoted everywhere.) anyway.
SANCTIMONIA VINCET SEMPER
This is always translated as "Purity Always Conquers." And I'm guessing that the idea is that the "pure" part is supposed to refer to y'know "pure blood." But like - "sanctimonia" just doesn't mean that. The Romans didn't have a concept of blood purity - so long as the family *name* continued, you were good. Adult adoption for political reasons was as common as marriage for political reasons. Adopting slaves was a thing... whatever.
If JKR had actually want to translate the "pure blood" concept into latin, the better choice would have been something like "eugenium vincet semper" or "the well born/good quality always conquers." Also the word makes you think of it's reflex "eugenics," which I guess is supposed to be the point.
What "sanctimonia" actually means is pure in the sense of chaste/virtuous/sacred. So okay. "Chastity always conquers," doesn't make sense as a family motto." "Virtue always conquers" ... I guess that could be meant ironically? And "The sacred always conquers," requires a little bit of thinking about, because the wizards in HP are pretty darn areligious.
So okay. I'll do "sacred" in the latin sense of "set apart, not of the ordinary world." in which case... the better translation would be something like "The Self-Contained Always Conquer" ???
which is honestly a *REALLY* interesting motto, and for the Malfoys specifically.
