doesn't salem still have ancient magic? the magic she used to torture oscar looked just like the old stuff she had when we first saw her in the lost fable.

strictly speaking:

no it looks very different now. but i’m dubious as to whether the V6 vs V8 magic fx is really meaningful because oz/oscar also have the new fx in V8 (albeit still green rather than salem’s multicolor). it strikes me as a stylistic rather than narrative change.

that said,

salem has magic.

that is not necessarily the same as salem still having the god-given magic ancient humans were blessed with; the pools of life and grimm were wellsprings of divine power and both of them changed her quite profoundly. the maidens are living proof that humans can wield magic without the divine gifts under certain anomalous circumstances.

(“anomalous” here meaning “not intended or foreseen by the brothers,” a category which certainly includes salem remaking herself in the pool of grimm.)

it’s also a fact that salem was empowered by her transformations in both pools; one made her immortal, the other made her grimm, she’s inarguably walking around with quite a lot of magic that ancient humans did not have. the sigil she uses to spawn her shadow hands is a grimm thing—the geist in V4 uses the same one to regenerate its own arm. in V8 she cracks solitas in half to draw up a river of grimm liquid overnight with zero apparent effort. during her assault on atlas she spawns wave after wave of grimm, hundreds at a time, seconds apart, for hours without slowing down. she designed a bespoke teleconferencing grimm that is also a security alarm system and which she can use in a pinch to create sendings of herself.

the lady usurped a god.

so the question is: does she still have the divine gifts that gave ancient humans their magic, or is all of the magic she wields now sourced from the pools?

magic is magic is magic—the practical difference between dust-magic and maiden-magic is scale and the line between aura, dust, semblance, and magic is often somewhat blurry (and of course cinder, salem’s protégée, uses her magic seamlessly as an extension of her semblance).

but not all magic is the same magic—the source is meaningful both functionally and narratively.

here i have to put on my contrarian cap and add that the widespread idea that salem holds modern humans in disdain and considers them to be not really human because they lack magic is, er, not particularly well supported by the text. and by that i mean salem explicitly regards modern humans as strong, brave, resourceful, passionate, and ingenious; derides ozpin’s self-defeating secrecy and refusal to trust (“your faith in mankind was not misplaced; when banded together, unified by a common enemy, they are a noticeable threat” <- she is mocking him for not doing that); and spends like four volumes all but begging cinder to stop obsessing over raw power. and she, explicitly, believes that humans are better off without the “old gods.”

this is a woman who fomented a rebellion against the brothers because she realized they were tyrannical monsters; the notion that she judges human worth solely on the basis of divine blessing is flatly absurd.

the point being that narratively, thematically, salem’s magic not being sourced from the brothers fits her character like a glove. that is what her rebellion was about.

and this is where i think the magic fx may actually be meaningful: at the beginning of TLF, when jinn sets the scene (“she lived in a time when kings and their kingdoms were plentiful, when men and women were capable of greatness, and magic was a gift from the gods that all could wield.”), we see salem do this:

six small lights, four large orbs. later in the episode, the black-violet and white-gold orbs reappear as representations of the brother gods; thus destruction/creation, which perhaps makes the green and orange orbs representations of knowledge and choice.

which is to say, i think those four larger orbs represent the divine gifts. that’s where her magic comes from.

then, near the end of the episode, the eldest daughter does this:

the six smaller lights are the same, but she doesn’t have the four larger orbs. jinn describes it as a miracle (<- implying ozlem had serious reason to think their children WOULDN’T inherit magic), salem is surprised but pleased, and ozma is horrified.

this section of TLF is, fundamentally, about the unreconcilable difference between salem’s view of the gods as monstrous tyrants and ozma’s unbroken faith in the god of light. look at the way his expression changes between “[we can] create the paradise” and “the old gods could not”:

the instant salem makes it clear that she’s envisioning a world without the brothers as “paradise,” he recoils. later his objection to their war of conquest is not “this is wrong,” but rather “this isn’t what he asked of me.” their disagreement isn’t moral; it’s religious.

so why—in the moment when ozma at last reveals his religious motivations to her—does ozma react like this to the sight of his daughter’s magic?

and why was it miraculous for a child of two magical parents, both of them hailing from a time when everyone could do magic, to be capable of magic herself?

the answer that makes the most sense to me, for both questions, is that the brothers stripped salem of their blessings—took her magic away—and then she effectively stole it back when she remade herself in the pool of grimm. salem’s magic would thus be more akin to modern human semblances than to ancient magic by virtue of not being a god-given gift; that’s a plausible reason for ozlem to believe their children wouldn’t or couldn’t inherit any magic, and naturally ozma would be disturbed by the revelation that what salem wants—a world where the brothers are not merely absent but actively unwanted and unneeded—is truly possible.

This is a list of things to watch out for, whether about the practice or the people who practice it.

People who say that there's only one way to practice, and if you're not doing it that way then you're not a real witch.

People who appropriate a closed culture and justify it by saying "their deity called to me".

People who are noticeably not from a closed culture and are selling items from that culture (smudge kits, dream catchers, anything chakra, etc) or are calling themselves "shaman," "reiki master" etc.

People who claim that they are speaking for a deity. This is seen a lot in some covens and mostly in Cults where the "leader" is Godspoused to said deity.

People who sell spirit companions. Spirit shops claim that they have bound a spirit to an item and that if you buy said item then the spirit will be under your control.

People who claim that you have to have other witches in your bloodline to be a witch. (These are known as Heriditary witches. They practice the same way their ancestors did, which isn't inherently bad, but the way that they present themselves is. Witchcraft is for ANYONE.)

Witches who use "we are the granddaughters of the witches you couldn't burn." Referring to the Salem Witch Trials, and the witch trials across Europe.

Another witch guarantees that spells work 100% of the time. They do not always work, and that's okay. If your spell has failed, you are not a bad witch.

Witches who can cast "physical change spells" on you guarantee that it will work. (Think body modification spells, i.e., make you taller/shorter, change the size of your lower region, change eye color, make you an angel, mermaid, and other mythical creatures.)

Witches who use the terms "white" magic and "black" magic. These terms are heavily racist coded.

People who offer to teach you witchcraft for a fee. (Think like $50+)

Norse Witches who use heavy white supremacy runes or sigils should be avoided. (You can learn more about this at Southern Poverty Law Center)

Witches who fully believe that they can move things with their minds.

People who use clairvoyance in their craft. (This is directed to those who use their gift to scam others. If something feels too good to be true, then it probably is with this type of diviner.)

Divination witches who charge $50+ dollars for a basic reading and then turn around and try to scam more out of you. (This also applies to those who say that your bloodline is cursed or they say something is bad around you, then they say "DM so I can cleanse you of XYZ"

Witches who claim that they are a reincarnation of a deity or other very powerful entity.

"Trust me when I say this, you don't want this, especially if you have Dreadmoore with you to act as your lapdog." The dragon struggled more, yet it was still no good, but there was reason to mention Dreadmoore other than he was involved in the fight that seemingly lead to his and Ruby's capture.

A bare smile touched her lips as he thrashed against his restraints: Salem had not been certain those enchantments would hold, but the sigils etched into every link in the ateric chain burn steadily. She drifted close enough to feel the heat rising off them on her face, although she made no move to touch him.

His questions interested not at all; he wouldn’t believe her answers even if she gave him. The bluster amuses, more than anything. Nice to have a name to put to the…helm of the one who wanted him.

how do you feel about the idea that the dark veins on Salem's body are a result of Summer using her eyes on her? and if you don't think that's what caused it, what's your theory on what happened between TLF and current times to make it happen?

i think it begs the question.

if the veins are scarring left by the silver glare—and there’s no clear textual reason to think that they are, because cinder didn’t end up with anything like that and she’s the closest data point, and because salem’s indestructibility is otherwise inviolate—the presumption that summer specifically is the one responsible seems improbable given the timeline involved. it’s been perhaps thousands of years since the ozlem kingdom fell; salem met summer twelve years prior to v1; somewhere around half a century ago, she put a bounty on maria’s head because of her silver eyes, which—if the veins are scars—would suggest that salem knew the silver glare could harm her decades before meeting summer.

how likely is it that salem would know that without first experiencing it?—and if she had experienced before, it makes… no sense… to conclude that it didn’t leave scars until summer tried it. at this point you have to either accept as a prerequisite that summer was just special somehow, or invent convoluted explanations to prop up the theory when the much simpler answer would be that it happened a long time ago and the details aren’t narratively important.

that said, i don’t believe that the veins are scars at all. i think they’re connected to her exile from human civilization after the ozlem kingdom fell and consequent embrace of the grimm; there is nothing in the lost fable to suggest that salem didn’t crawl out of the grimm pool and proceed to try to live as much of a Normal Human Life as she could manage. meaning, staying far away from the grimm and living close enough to a settlement (and in regular enough contact) that she had a paved footpath leading right to her door.

take that away from her. banish her from civilization and leave her with nothing but the grimm to turn to for companionship. what happens?

it doesn’t make sense to me to assume that salem just, like, instinctively knew how to form grimm out of the pools or use geist-sigils or communicate with grimm. i think she probably had to figure all of it out through trial and error after she was cut off completely from human civilization. my theory is that the veins are something she developed through this learning and growing closer to the grimm.

(something similar happens to cinder when she uses the grimm beetle to take a portion of the fall maiden: either the magic or the grimm marks her. so there’s some precedent to suggest that this kind of thing is possible.)

HmmmMMM so it's very iffy on how much I can say and how much I want to remain a surprise for others, but I will try my best to blabber on here for ya :v

So it's no mystery that Belos and Selena are basically the somewhat more functional (and very much less violent) version of my own Priest and Salem, who have been a massive hyper-fixation since late 2019/early 2020. I talked before about how I instantly imprinted on Belos because he is so much of what I envisioned when I created Priest, they have a lot of characteristics they share and a lot of backstory elements that are super similar.

I have spoiled some stuff inadvertently on this blog, because at the time I was developing everything, I wasn't sure I was going to be writing a fic yet, so some things are less of a surprise than others

Now, as for more in detail, fun lore stuff for this, lets go under a read-more, because maybe some peeps don't want me spoiling stuff hehe.

Something that a lot of people have caught on, and I am very happy they did, was that Elsewhere and Elsewhen is gonna be real big for Selena and Belos. I did one fun comic on the topic, and I put the "time shenanigans" tag on the fic, but where people started catching on was around chapter four, after introducing grandma Isabella, and where two things were mentioned: That Belos had a very short infatuation with Isabella upon meeting her, and that, as Isabella puts it, "Selena looks more and more like her every day"

And it's one of the main plot points in the story which I planed very early, it's the reason for Belos' obsession in the first place, and I can't wait to write it all out. I have some bits and pieces already written out. I also plan to do a side-fic of his POV as well, around the time this part of the story finally comes around. And let me tell you, Philip is one fun, deluded guy to write for! A little spoilery snippet for ya:

Some other stuff I am so excited about:

The Oracle aspect of Selena coming more in to play. It has been mostly pushed to the side except for little snippets here and there, however oracle magic is gonna be much more significant. Especially the spirit sensitivity that comes with it, and even the way I plan to change the canon near the end of season 2.

I actually started planing out a very different way the story would progress when season 2 just ended, which I already scraped because it just wouldn't fit anymore. It was supposed to be a very heartwrenching betrayal, especially on Belos' part, because in this version, in an attempt to purge Selena of the "inherent evil of magic", he forced a specialized sigil on her that locked away all her magic. Then the finale happened, Selena was dragged to the human realm (she was there along with him because he had every intention of taking her with him now that she was "cured"), and she was forced to adapt to a life without magic, and without Belos.

I can share snippets of this, since this storyline is now completely scrapped (also Philip regained his human form here, we didn't know yet that he was stuck in goop form haha)

The only saving grace I did give him in this version is that he was afraid the sigil would fail and hurt her, and his failsafe was the guhya skin. So his redemption did come in the form of him letting her know this later on and removing it, letting her magic come back.
