I mean if I have one general criticism of the Umbar expansion so far it does seem like the devs are a little bit too interested in having every sort of enemy that they used in older areas in it. Like, sure, I guess I can see wights, especially since Sauron had a lot of influence in the region, but I can accept that just in general in this world there's a risk that when you bury a body a fell spirit will come and steal it. But why is there a random spider-nest in the Shield Isles? How did they get there? They are literally involved in two quests, one of which is 'go kill 10 enemies' and the other of which is 'pick up 10 things off the ground.' So they could have been replaced with literally any other kind of enemy and it would have been fine. And meanwhile we actually know quite a lot about giant spiders in LotR and even more in LotRO's take on that, specifically their genealogy and how their colonies migrated from. Shelob. LotRO takes the position that Shelob is the progenitor of ALL the giant spiders, so how did they get here? They can't build boats, they don't have thumbs. Normal spiders can usually walk on water, but I don't feel like that would work for spiders this big because the surface tension wouldn't be able to withstand the greater weight. Unless these are actually spiders from some other brood, which, if they are, feels like that needs to come up, actually. And then there are also the drakes, but like, drakes can fly so at least I know how they got here. Does not answer the question of why they are here and how long they have been here. Kind of feels like. There have been giant spiders and drakes in basically every region since OG Gondor and they felt like they had to put them into this region even though there was no reason for it and it raises more questions than it answers.

Which is kinda. Well you know that meme about how level 1 in an RPG you fight red crabs and then at level 800 you're fighting crabs that look exactly the same but they're purple? Yeah.

At supper someone made a reference to the “I have no memory of this place” meme.

J: Is that Obi-Wan Kenobi?

S: No, that’s Gandalf.

But that triggered a fruitful flight of fancy: Lord of the Rings with Star Wars characters. (Original trilogy, mostly.)

Frodo should be Luke, that seemed obvious. S pointed out that meant that Gollum would be Darth Vader, who would drop into Mount Doom after he cut off Luke’s hand, causing the defeat of Emperor Sauron.

Leia could be Aragorn, perhaps? She is royalty, after all.

What about Han and Chewbacca? I suggested Merry and Pippin, since hobbits are kind of rogues, but we weren’t sure that worked. S suggested maybe Han could be Boromir, since they were both cynical; of course Boromir died, but maybe that meant he got frozen in carbonite and thawed out later as Faramir. Which led to the question, who was Denethor? Why, Jabba, of course. Think of that grotesque dinner-eating scene.

What about Samwise? Maybe that’s R2-D2. One of Luke’s closest and most loyal friends, after all. Trundling up the stairs in Minas Morgul to rescue him from the orcs. Carrying him up the final slopes of Mount Doom. Cooking potatoes...? Well, maybe not. Maybe Yoda? That doesn’t seem like the right trajectory, though. (Maybe Yoda is more like...Galadriel or something. “Diminish, I will. Into the West, I will go.”)

Maybe C-3P0 and R2-D2 are Merry and Pippin, then. But who’s Gimli and Legolas? We forgot about them. Gimli could be Chewbacca, perhaps, but Han wouldn’t make a good Legolas. Maybe those two are the droids? Oh, and there’s Lando...Lando and Chewbacca could be Merry and Pippin and Han could be Samwise?

Clearly the dianoga from the Death Star could be the monster outside Moria, and, going outside the trilogy, General Grievous could be Shelob.

It’s a imperfect matchup, but probably some amusing memes could be made from it.

I intentionally didn’t Google this before posting to see if somebody’s already done this better...
