Rant.

Canon ships are canon for a reason. They are canon because their personalities match. Take Hinny for example. It wasn’t TOO obvious, which is great (everyone thought Harry would end up w/ Hermione, siriusly🤭) THE Harry Potter, adventurous and courageous meets book! Ginny, who’s funny and even more courageous. They balance each other perfectly, Harry gives Ginny support, and Ginny encourages Harry w/ her bravery. Now I’ll take my OTP Remadora/Ronks for example. Unpopular opinion ahead Toxic W*lf$tar shippers can scroll idc. Remus Lupin, the poor, self conscious, kind, quote unquote “unlovable” werewolf, the fierce bubbly funny metamorphmagus. See, Tonks probably is at least a little insecure bc people ask her to morph, and nobody loves her for who she actually is. Remus, on the other hand, nobody truly cared for him (yes not even Sirius Black that y’all say Remus loved HE LITERALLY MADE FUN OF REMUS’ CONDITION AND USED HIM AS A MURDER WEAPON IS THAT CARING SMH ) anyways they meet and are amused, than impressed, than seriously smitten by each other. Tonks shows that people can love Remus even though he is a lycanthrope, she also gives him a positive atmosphere he needs. Remus on the other hand, never, ever asks Tonks to morph for him, and loves her the way she is. He also cares for her which is perfect because Tonks is INCREDIBLY clumsy. THEY ARE LITERALLY THE MISSING PIECE FOR EACH OTHER.

all this and Remadora is still one of the most unpopular ships smh

The idea that wolfstar shippers and remadora shippers need to be on the opposing sides is so funny to me. Like, being Remusexual is not a choice 🤷🏻‍♀️ it's a fact of life.

Sirius and Dora would not compete for Remus' affection - the only thing they compete about is the awesomeness of the next prank.

And Remus, I have it on good (headcanon) authority, has enough love in him to share with not two but three partners. He needs the pack to keep him strong and confident. Wolves are alone only when they're preparing to die.

...and the pack needs a balancing factor for the cousins Black shenanigans, hence a fourth person - Gemma 🤷🏻‍♀️ (yes, I'm Remusexual, bite me).

What some wolfstar shippers (the toxic ones) think is homophobic:

What homophobic actually is:

It's like I can dislike Kanye West because he is black which means I'm racist.

But I can also dislike Kanye West for his racist and antisemitic comments he made which is in fact not racist.

Therefore I can dislike (or in my case just not care about) wolfstar and ship Remadora instead not because wolfstar is gay but for example because I think Remus deserved better than someone who cared about his own fun more than Remus discomfort during full moons and tried to make Remus a murder weapon and therefore risking Remus being expelled from Hogwarts and having to live with the guilt of having killed another student (which we know is one of his biggest fears). That does not make me or anyone else homophobic.

In addition to that we do not know Remus' or Tonks' sexuality in canon (they might have never even thought about it and labeled themselves). I personally headcanon Remus as Bisexual (for Tonks I'm not sure yet). I also think he might have hade a crush on Sirius when they were younger but they were never in a relationship because Sirius simply did not care for him that much (he definitely cared more about James).

I could also accuse people who say Remus was gay of being biphobic but we all know this would be idiotic. Because as I said Remus' sexuality is not known and these are all headcanons. I'm clever enough to not do it so please think about it.

If The majority of Mauraders stans admitted that Canon and fanon Mauraders are different characters would you have liked the Mauraders Fandom? What is your opinion on the Fanon Mauraders by themselves, ( I personally think the fanon versions are unrealistic and boring)

Hmm… I’m not sure if I’d love the Marauders fandom. Though I know for sure I’d certainly dislike them A LOT less.

If they didn’t come up with fanon Marauders then I absolutely would’ve loved the Marauders (except James, nothing will ever change my mind about that filthy mongrel) and perhaps even their fandom. Fanon Sirius is what ruined canon Sirius for me, I used to love him but his stans were too much to handle. Remus… well I do love him, but I don’t interact with his fans unless they’re Remadora shippers, I usually just stick to anti side. Peter.. well he’s hated by 99.9% of the fandom anyway so yeah.🤷‍♀️

I think I’d be alright with the Marauders fandom if they just admitted that they actually are a bunch of apologists who are unable to acknowledge their faves’ flaws, and if they stop harassing Snape fans and sending us death threats.

What’s my opinion on the fanon Marauders? Aight, let’s see then:

Fanon James Potter

Apparently he’s a feminist icon, is a sex god, is Aaron Taylor Johnson, saved Lily from creepy Snivellus, protects the school from evil racists, cannot do anything wrong, was doing social service by bullying ugly greasy Snivellus.

FACT CHECK: Did JKR sue people for writing Wolfstar fanfiction? [FALSE] [with sources]

So, if you're at all active in the HP fandom, and ESPECIALLY if you're on TikTok, you've likely come across a post or video claiming the following:

JKR LITERALLY SUED PEOPLE OVER WOLFSTAR FANFICTION! AND THAT'S ALSO WHY SHE MADE REMADORA CANON -- TO SPITE THE SHIPPERS!

I'm not sure who first started this claim or how its various permutations grew, but it spread at the speed of light across social media. This widely-circulated meme summarizes it:

For the LONGEST time, I didn't know what to make of it. The claims were vague enough that they seemed like they could be true -- after all, JKR is a megacunt and a renowned TERF. You don't need to fact-check either of those things.

But then -- for the first time ever -- I came across a video on TikTok claiming that what was being said was NOT true, and that it was being used SPECIFICALLY to stir up drama. Which was... crazy, to say least.

And that led me, well, to do my own research & fact-check. I've taken the original video's structure and added some exposition as well.

So here's the truth:

That 2003 case the above meme refers to? Not even REMOTELY what the situation was about. Hell, not even CLOSE.

In 2003, JKR sent a cease-and-desist letter to an explicit adult HP fan fiction website, called "Restricted Section". Here's the letter:

As the above letter states, the site was sent a notice because of overarching concerns that minors would accidentally stumble onto the sexually explicit content the site hosted after searching up 'Harry Potter'.

The hand-wringing over minor safety probably seems dated now, but it was, in fact, standard practice in the early 2000s - sexually explicit fan content was being removed across the internet for those exact concerns. In fact, just the year before, in 2002, fanfiction.net was purged of NC-17 content (which would happen one more time, in 2012).

I feel ridiculous stating it, but just to be clear -- in the above letter and all my subsequent research, there's NO evidence she went after Wolfstar -- or any ship, for that matter -- directly.

In fact, the letter goes an extra mile to declare that "our clients (JKR) make no complaint about innocent fan fiction written by genuine Harry Potter fans", but that, "there is plainly a very real risk that impressionable children... will be directed... to your sexually explicit website".

But that leads in nicely to the next point -- the website DIDN'T shut down, as per the letter's request. Instead, they added password protection to ensure only members older than 17 were accessing it.

OK, but why did JKR and Warner Bros go after this site in the first place? Most believe it was because of a widely-publicized article in THE SCOTSMAN that talked about the website. But, once again, this article doesn't go after Wolfstar in particular -- it only goes after Harry x Draco and Harry x Snape. The inclusion of latter was arguably what generated the biggest controversy -- the pairing of Harry, a fictional minor, with an adult character, in slash stories largely written by adult heterosexual women, was not one that could be cast in a good light to the general public. It's hardly a surprise JKR's lawyers sought to do something before the controversy got out of hand and worried parents started to make calls.

What I said before still goes, though. The legal core of the issue was ALWAYS to do NOT with the ships, but the EXPLICIT NATURE of the work -- and the (very real) concerns that the series' then-mostly-under-18 readership could find said works with very little as far as guardrails were concerned. (I know, because I was one of those kids)

TLDR; JKR did NOT sue people over Wolfstar fanfiction, she sent a cease-and-desist notice to a website that was not taking adequate precautions to prevent minors from accessing the explicit adult content on the site.

To be clear -- this is not meant to be a statement on what to ENJOY in your fandom ships. You can ship Wolfstar, Remadora, both, neither -- it really doesn't matter. I think the fandom is critical enough of the author to have reclaimed her work on our own terms, and people should be allowed to just, idk enjoy things.

But propagating straight-up falsehoods is dangerous, especially when it comes at the expense of 1) a safe fandom environment (see: the current fandom ship wars between Remadora and Wolfstar, which are difficult to watch) and 2) serves as a distraction from the ACTUAL garbage JKR engages in (of which there is plenty -- no need to make it up lol).

Also, truth be told -- inter-fandom ship wars don't generally add anything productive to the necessary conversations that need to be had about her works. The thought that dashing fan ships was a key motivator in her writing rather than, I don't know, plot concerns, is ludicrous on face, and gives fans a level of control over the original writer that just... doesn't exist IRL? And certainly didn't back then?

And again -- the books would have been VERY different series, plot-wise, if Sirius Black HAD lived. Him being in a relationship with Remus, confirmed or implied, has no relation to that decision.

If we have talk Harry Potter, I'd rather talk about just about anything else -- the racism, the misogyny, the lack of any sort of organic queer rep and JKR's inability to just own up to the problems in her works. But the minutiae of ship wars -- and the inevitable stream of disinformation that comes with it, sans any kind of concrete evidence -- is one I'd prefer to pass on.

I don’t really have any strong feelings towards Remadora (I definitely prefer it to Wolfstar though because it’s way healthier and also Sirius Black annoys me as a person to the point where I dislike any ship involving him) but it’s so funny how WS shippers will be like “Remadora is a problematic ship name because Tonks hates her first name!” when they literally call their ship “WOLFstar” when Remus hates being a werewolf more than anything else in the world LMAOOOO the hypocrisy

Wow I've never heard that claim before.

But the same applies to Sirius too. STAR = the naming tradition of his family (who he hated).

I like Sirius but fanon Sirius annoys me solely because he's not Sirius anymore.

And I probably wouldn't even dislike wolfstar so much if it wasn't for the constant Remadora and Tonks bashing, fans acting like it's a universal ship (when one of them literally dates someone else in canon) and all the implications of how m/f ships aren't woke enough.

How I feel about this character: LOVE HIM. All the angsty potential :)

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Sirius Black and that’s pretty much it haha. I was never a huge Remadora shipper...

My non-romantic OTP for this character: I love Remus and Lily being kickass balls of sarcasm.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I’m not sure if this is unpopular but one of my favorite things to write is Dark!Remus because I feel like out of all the characters, he’s the one with the ‘darkest’ potential? Like he tries to hide it but really he’s ruthless and cunning and could have easily been placed in Slytherin.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Wolfstar, obviously. And I would have loved to hear more about how the Marauders helped him with his Fulls.

Well anything that doesn’t happen on the page is “made up” in a way. Including whatever my head canons and such are.

I personally see Sirius more as ace and not really interested in romance or a relationship, but that’s just my head canon. And I do have stuff in the books that I think can support that idea but you can support other head canons with evidence from the books.

And I do think we see that Remus is genuinely into Tonks (and JKR confirmed when we got that amused impressed smitten quote). Which has no bearing on Sirius’ sexuality, but I did just want to note that I like/ship remadora.

Headcanon of the day: Tonks isn’t careful about not leaving hickeys because she can just shapeshift them away. Remus constantly has hickeys because of this.

In OOTP (they were definitely shagging by then) Sirius teased Remus mercilessly... and he is very easy to embarrass, so he blushes furiously at first but then gives a cheeky reply that makes Sirius glad that his inner marauder isn't dead yet....Ahhh, good times
