Half the books in the Black Family Library have a very specific way to read them because they’re deadly to use differently, the Black kids respect all libraries.
No, but seriously for a second. This is all very fun and enjoyable, but think about this.
Imagine Sirius, first year, the first time he enters the library with his friends. He's holding his breath, being quieter than the others have seen him so far, steps cautious and body held oddly as he walks through the shelves. When Peter reaches for a book carelessly, Sirius smacks his hand away because are you mad? You can't just touch them.
Sirius knocking Remus back when he sees him bent over an open book left out on one of the tables, already scouring the page. Telling them all they have to be quiet or else the books will start shrieking loudly.
Because the books in his house weren't just deadly. They were cruel and nasty, nearly vindictive. Half of them couldn't even be touched, had to be summoned and read with magic. And Sirius grew up a little scared of books but also incredibly fascinated, because if that could be done to books, what else could be done to other things with less heinous intentions?

accidentally confessed to my coworkers today that I read fanfiction bc I was raving about Spinning Silver (I just purchased it for our collection) and how much I love Naomi Novik and they were like “what else have you read by her?” and I forgot that litlte white lies were an option and, in fact, a preferable thing I could do

I’ve seen a couple fics mention a Black Family library, and I was wondering if you knew if that was canon or just a headcanon? I don’t remember any mention of anything like it, but I might be wrong
There is nothing in canon about a library in 12GP, but there is also nothing against that, it's kind of left for interpretation.
In terms of historical and in-universe accuracy, it makes more sense for family houses like this to have a library, than to not have one.
They don't use phones, don't use TVs, don't have much to entertain themselves with, so I bet most of them spend their time reading, training, gossiping, and social networking. There is also no internet, so that's the only real way to get information, you know?
They would have ancient books passed down the family line, books on forbidden and dark types of magic. Especially families like the Blacks and the Potters (if we assume that they're non-English in origin) would have a lot of family legacy books, non-European magic, wandless magic, all kind of.. demons, spirits, familiars, things that don't exist in the UK.
Malfoy Manor is always portrayed in fanon to have a huge library, with all kind of forbidden and ancient books.
(i have a whole pinterest board on the libraries in 12GP and Malfoy Manor actually) something like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
a small private library/study space that Regulus would have in his own room <3:

hi!! I would like to request older!reader and older!sirius black where reader ends up saving him from bellatrix’s curse.
ty for requesting !! enjoyyy <3 + ty to my lovie for helping :)
— another one bites the dust (but it's definitely not sirius)
post azkaban!sirius x reader ★ 1.5k words
Lily Evans was your best friend. The two of you had been sorted into Gryffindor as muggleborn witches together and assigned the same dorm. The two of you did everything together, from studying in the library to braiding each others hair down by the Black Lake. Of course being that close meant you had to witness all of James Potter's attempts at winning your best friend over. One time you happened to alone on your way to class when James and the other 'Marauders' had stopped you, begging you for any tips on how to successfully ask Lily out.
"You've gotta let this go. She's way out of your league, you toerag." You had rolled your eyes at him, the boy gaping at your remark as you had always seemed pretty docile. Sirius Black — who you now notice was standing beside the bespectacled boy — barked out a laugh and applauded you, causing a warm feeling in your chest that you would never admit was because of him. Moreover, if James ever asked him to, Sirius wouldn't mind hanging out with you to get information on Lily (and not because he thought you were super cute).
Once James had successfully convinced Lily to date him, you and her had blended in well with the Marauders. When Lily and James would have their couple time, you would play chess with Peter and study with Remus in the common room. Sirius even let you join in on planning and performing their famous pranks (which did not jumpstart a crush on him or anything). The six of you had become your own little family, and when James had proposed to Lily after graduation it was no surprise who the groomsmen and maid of honor would be.
Meanwhile you had also fallen in love with Sirius Black during your time at Hogwarts, and the two of you had become attached at the hip. Sirius would walk with you to class, and you'd spend nights in the astronomy tower talking about the future.
You were each other's safe space, and Sirius loved you so deeply, which led to a lot of heartbreak the the night Lily and James were killed and your boyfriend was sent to Azkaban for the rest of his life for being the one who did it. You spent the next twelve years working under the Department of Magical Law enforcement as an investigator, trying to convince the Ministry that Sirius would never in a million years do anything to hurt his friend, much less kill him and his wife. They ignored you, dismissing your claims as a fit of hysteria, weaponizing your grief against you. You had been nonstop trying to figure out what exactly happened that night, regularly exchanging letters with Remus until he sent his final one, asking you to refrain from sending any more, as he felt too betrayed by Sirius to hear any of your theories.
The moment Peter had been revealed as the true murderer, Remus had come by your flat to apologize in person, the two of you reconciling over tea and teary hugs. When Sirius finally came back things were slow to return to "normal", but the two of you were just as in love with each other as you were back at Hogwarts. Because of his current situation with the Ministry, you moved in with him at 12 Grimmauld Place, then agreeing immediately when Dumbledore had come to the two of you about reassembling the Order of the Phoenix.
Tumblr media
"You're a cheater Sirius Black, I don't want to play anymore." You huffed, standing up and throwing the playing cards down on the coffee table. The two of you were playing cards on the couch in Grimmauld place, trying to have a relaxing night amidst the recent chaos. Sirius cooed and pulled you down to sit on his lap, wrapping his arms around your waist and pressing sweet kisses to your shoulder. "Oh you'll survive, Mrs. Black."
The name alone caused you to melt into him, but the way he was looking at you in that moment made you feel like a teenager again, shy and in love with the boy before you. "Mrs. Black? We're not even engaged, love."
He grabbed your left hand, his thumb running over your ring finger, his voice becoming as soft as his touch. "It's coming, darling, don't you worry."
Your future mother-in-law screeched in horror from her place on the wall. "The most ancient and noble House of Black will not be accepting of a revolting mudblood! Must keep the blood pure, toujous pur!"
"I like to think I've been patient enough." you teased, gesturing to where his mother's portrait hung, the crazy bitch still muttering nonsense to herself.
Sirius sighed and lightly squeezed your hip. "I know m'love, you've been too good to me. Once things blow over a bit, I promise we'll get back to how things used to be, yeah?"
You hummed, brushing the hair out of his face and kissing his forehead. "No need to rush, we've got the rest of our lives, Sirius."
The fireplace suddenly lights up green as Severus comes through, his lip curling on one side as he saw the position you two were in and moved his gaze to somewhere else in the room.
"Severus," Sirius clicked his tongue, cocking his head to the side. "to what do we owe this pleasure?"
"The Dark Lord," his eyes met yours, then shifted to settle on Sirius. "seems to have put an idea in Mr. Potter's head that you were being tortured at the Ministry. He's on his way there to look for you, you are to alert the Order."
You and Sirius stood immediately, thanking Severus as he disappeared again and sending your patronus' to the other Order members. They arrive quickly and the six of you head to the Ministry and apparate down to the lower level chambers, wands at the ready.
Kingsley and Alastor moved towards one group of Death Eaters, with Remus and Tonks on the defense. "Harry, where's Harry?" you were frantic looking for your godson, Sirius right beside you. You find him in combat with Dolohov, rushing to his side just as he hit the dark wizard with a Full Body Bind curse.
"Nice one, Haz!" Sirius praised from a few feet away. Harry beamed at you and you smiled and squeezed his shoulder quickly before heading back over to Sirius.
The chamber was complete chaos, the dark walls lighting up with flashes of all colors, all kinds of hexes and jinxes were being thrown around. You had to admit, Harry and the other students were great at duelling and really kept up with the Order members. Out of the corner of your eye you see your beloved's deranged cousin, her wand locked onto Sirius. Her wand glowed green as she shouted out an unforgivable spell.
You turn around to see him just a few feet from the Veil. "Sirius!" you gasp, immediately casting 'Accio' to pull him out of Bellatrix's way, his hands gripping your waist to steady himself, eyes blown out in shock. You both are staring at each other, eyes watery and chests heaving.
"Too fucking good to me, darling."
Your moment was interrupted by a screeching Bellatrix, sending a 'Confringo' your way. You managed to dodge it but the spell caught the sleeve of Sirius' coat.
"Don't you fucking dare!" you growled, shooting multiple stunning spells at her which she annoyingly kept deflecting. She laughed maniacally as you circled each other, casting spells left and right. The dark witch then shot another spell at Sirius, effectively hitting him in the back then grinning madly at you, "Whoopsie!"
Your heartbeat picked up as you realized where she was standing. You quickly scanned the chamber and it seemed that most of the Death Eaters had fled or been taken down. You'd never killed anyone before, but she was one of Voldemort's strongest followers. Not only that, but she tried to attack your Sirius not just once, not twice, but three times. Your eyes widened as you saw her prepare another curse on him.
"Not my boyfriend, you bitch!"
You cast 'Depulso', throwing her back a few feet into the Veil, immediately sending her into the world of the dead. You stood there frozen, your wand still pointed where Bellatrix once stood. Sirius pulled you back into his arms, whispering "thank you"s and "i love you"s into your ear.
Harry had appeared next as the battle ended, joining in your group hug, the three of you holding each other tight. You kissed the top of your godson's head, no longer unable to hold back your tears.
Harry had come home with you and Sirius that night, having some dinner and then going upstairs to stay in one of the spare rooms. Sirius held you close in bed that night, thanking you once again for saving him. You smiled and squeezed his hand, thanking him for coming back to you all those years ago. You fell asleep that night unaware of the sparkling diamond that was hidden in Sirius' nightstand.

Jealousy
Pairings: Older!Remus Lupin x Fem!Reader
Warnings: Angst, fluff, age gap (reader is in her twenties)
A/N: Here is another little one-shot based off this request: "can you write reader confessing her admiration towards lupin and being rejected and as a result, she focuses on other boys and it enrages remus?"
Find that story here: The Art of Understanding
____________________________________________________
The dimly lit room in Grimmauld Place was filled with an air of tension as the members of the Order of the Phoenix gathered for their latest meeting. Remus Lupin, wearing a wearied expression, sat near the fireplace, lost in his own thoughts. Unbeknownst to him, a young witch named Y/N sat nervously on the edge of her seat, her heart pounding with a mixture of excitement and apprehension.
After the meeting concluded, Y/N mustered the courage to approach Remus. "Um, Remus?" she stammered, catching his attention.
He turned to her, his tired eyes meeting hers. "Yes, Y/N?"
She took a deep breath, her fingers fidgeting. "I've been meaning to tell you something. I, uh, I've admired you for a long time. Your wisdom, your strength—it's really something."
Remus raised an eyebrow, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Well, I appreciate your kind words, Y/N. But...I'm not the right person for you. I'm too old, too damaged. You deserve someone who can offer you a future without the burden of the past."
Y/N felt her heart sink as the weight of Remus's words settled in. "I… I understand," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
As the days passed, Y/N tried to move on, to divert her attention to other members of the Order. She found herself drawn to the charismatic and rebellious Sirius Black, whose charm and wit seemed to distract her from the rejection she had experienced. In the midst of their laughter and camaraderie, Remus couldn't help but notice the subtle shift in Y/N's attention.
One evening, as Y/N and Sirius shared a lighthearted moment in the kitchen, Remus entered the room, his gaze involuntarily fixating on the scene before him. The laughter that had once been reserved for him now echoed in the room with Sirius.
A pang of jealousy and regret surged through Remus as he watched Y/N and Sirius, his heart conflicting with a mixture of emotions. He clenched his fists, his jaw tight.
Sirius noticed Remus's presence and shot him a mischievous grin. "Hey, Remus, care to join us?"
Y/N looked up, her eyes meeting Remus's for a fleeting moment. His expression was unreadable, a storm of conflicting emotions in his eyes. "I think I'll pass," he replied tersely, turning on his heel and leaving the room.
Y/N sighed, torn between the comfort Sirius offered and the unresolved tension with Remus. Little did she know, Remus Lupin, the man who had rejected her, was now grappling with the realization that perhaps he had made a mistake.
In the following days, Remus found himself unable to shake the turmoil in his heart. He couldn't ignore the growing realization that he might have been too hasty in dismissing any possibility with Y/N. A nagging voice in his mind urged him to confront his feelings and perhaps rectify the situation.
One evening, Sirius found Remus alone in the library, his eyes fixed on a book but clearly lost in thought. Sensing the tension radiating from his friend, Sirius took a seat across from him.
"Remus, what's going on?" Sirius asked, a furrow forming on his brow.
Remus sighed, running a hand through his graying hair. "It's complicated, Sirius. I think I made a mistake with Y/N. I pushed her away when maybe I shouldn't have."
Sirius raised an eyebrow, studying Remus carefully. "You mean you like her?"
Remus hesitated before nodding. "Yes, but I told her I'm not the right person for her. I said I'm too damaged. And too old."
Sirius chuckled, leaning back in his chair. "Well, you're right about being old." Remus felt an upward tug on his lips. "Mate, I don't think she sees you that way. I mean, I've been spending time with her, and it's pretty clear she's just trying to move on. She values you, Remus."
A mix of relief and regret washed over Remus. "I need to talk to her, set things straight."
Sirius grinned. "That's the spirit! Go talk to her. Clear the air. Trust me; it'll be better for both of you."
Taking Sirius's advice, Remus sought out Y/N the next day. The tension between them was palpable as he approached her, both unsure of what to say. Y/N looked up from her book, meeting Remus's gaze with a mix of curiosity and apprehension.
"Y/N, can we talk?" Remus asked, his voice soft.
She nodded, setting aside her book as they found a quiet corner in the Order's headquarters. The air felt heavy with unspoken words as Remus took a deep breath, preparing to lay bare his feelings.
"I meant what I said before, Y/N. I am too old for you, too damaged," he admitted, his eyes searching hers for any sign of understanding. "But I think I may have been too quick to dismiss any chance between us," Remus admitted, his eyes falling to look at his worn-down shoes.
Y/N sighed, a mix of emotions crossing her face. "Remus, you made it clear that I deserve someone without the burden of the past. I can't change that."
Remus reached out, gently taking her hand. "But I've been thinking. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe we could figure things out together. I care about you, Y/N."
A flicker of surprise and hope flashed in her eyes. "You mean that?"
He nodded. "I do."
Y/N's lips curved into a small smile, and she squeezed his hand. "I appreciate your honesty, Remus."
As they continued to talk, the weight of the unspoken tension lifted, replaced by a newfound understanding. In the end, they found themselves drawn to each other, the initial angst giving way to a sense of warmth and connection. As they stood in the quiet corridor, Remus couldn't resist the urge any longer. He leaned in, capturing Y/N's lips in a soft and tentative kiss, sealing the beginning of a new chapter for them both.

You had always been more on the reserved side. Where Sirius had chosen to leave the tortures from 12 Grimmauld Place behind him when the Black Siblings returned to school, you and Regulus had been the opposite.
You couldn’t forget. It wasn’t possible. The horrors you always faced at home haunted you every night, leading into early in the mornings, leaving you restless the rest of the day. The only peace you got was when you could sneak off into the library to bury your nose in whatever book you had your hands on. Whether that was a reread or a completely new genre, it didn’t matter. It was an escape.
So, that is exactly what you were doing now. You had been curled up in an armchair in a secluded corner of the library, reading, for almost an hour now. No distractions. Mind blank. Peace finally washing over you.
Letting out a soft sigh, you flipped the page, getting ready to read another chapter when a shadow loomed over you.
“Hello, Dove,” Remus whispered from above you. “Having a bad day?”
You and Remus had met in the Library on a rainy afternoon, and just sat together in silence while reading. Over time you had started small talk, and that led to conversations, which then led into a friendship, turned secret relationship.
It’s not that you wanted it to stay a secret, however, Remus and you were both scared of backlash from Sirius, and you were terrified of your parents; therefore, they could never find out.
Remus notices that you’re too far, too deep into your book to notice him. To pull you back into the present, he carefully rests a hand on your thigh and rubs gently, coaxing you back into the real world.
You flinch slightly at the contact before looking up to see your boyfriend. “Oh, Rem, hi. How long have you been there?” You ask, shutting your book to give him your undivided attention.
Remus ignores you, smiling gently, not sympathetically though, because he knows by now that you won’t accept it. “What do you need from me, Dovy? To talk?” He’s more than aware that you are not actually going to open up right now, he can see it in your eyes from a mile away.
“Can you just hold me?” You whisper, your words laced with vulnerability.
Remus’s eyes soften before he shuffles you around, sliding onto the chair behind you, and situating you onto his lap. He doesn’t say anything. He just holds you, gently stroking your hair, occasionally leaving a kiss to the crown of your head.
When he thinks you're almost asleep, you speak again, “Nothing ever lasts forever, Rem.”
“I know, love. What are you referring to?” He asks, dread filtering into his mind. The lycanthrope has a love-hate relationship with your deep thoughts. Some bring on deep meaningful conversations, whereas others are filled with unnecessary insecurity and doubts.
“Us,” You mutter the exact words that he was dreading.
“No.” Remus says sternly, a tone you rarely hear him use. “I will always love you,” He turns you so you’re sitting sideways in his lap, him making direct eye contact with you, making sure that you hold it. “We’re not doing this, you need to get rid of whatever negative ghosts that are haunting your mind, because we are not breaking up. If I need to help chase those ghosts away, then so be it, but you cannot let them dictate our relationship. Ours, not theirs.”
You nod, burying your head into his neck, breathing in the calming scent of cocoa and old books, mixed with a hint of pine.
“I want to hear you say it,” He whispers, nudging you with his shoulder.
You lift your head from the crook of his neck and smile weakly. “Ours, not the ghosts.”
“Exactly right, Dove.”
Remus leans in and gently presses his lips to yours, and you reciprocate before he leans back, pulling you into his chest. “I love you,” He whispers, again, knowing you needed reassurance. “And I always will.”
You nod, “I love you, forever and always.” It comes out in a whisper, but Remus hears it anyway and presses his forehead against yours, but not before pressing a kiss to your nose.
He slowly reaches up and presses the pads of his thumbs where he knows your dimples are and where he knows they should be right now. “Can you smile for me, Love?”
And you do. Because you love him, more than you thought you were ever capable of. You smile crookedly, showing Remus that it is indeed a true smile, and he leaves a kiss on both dimples before pulling away and smiling back at you.
You bring your own thumbs to his face, rubbing gently over the hundreds of freckles scattered along his face.
He kisses you gently once more before grabbing your book, “Now, what were we reading before I interrupted?” He questions teasingly.
“Well, I was reading that,” You admit sheepishly, pulling out a quill and ink container from your bag.
“The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?” Remus raises a teasing brow.
“Oh hush,” You shove his shoulder. “I was in the mood for something different and it was in the muggle book section. It seemed interesting.”
“No judgment from me then, Dove.” He whispers, opening the book at your marked spot.
And that is exactly how you and Remus spend the rest of your day. Him reading to you, and you drawing thin vines, small flowers, and a variety of constellations on his various scars while you listen to his soothing voice tell the story of a girl with a dog that somehow got sucked into a tornado and transported into the world of Oz. It didn’t make sense to you, but Remus was reading it, and that was all that seemed to matter to you at that very moment.

Second Son (VII) | Regulus Black
Series Synopsis: Forbidden from contacting Harry over the summer, you opt to explore the eerie halls of Grimmauld Place where you stumble upon a lonely portrait of the House's second son.
— Chapter Synopsis: The summer before your sixth year is another fruitful one spent at Grimmauld Place. Regulus and Y/N have an insightful conversation and grow closer than before.
Part VI / Part VIII / Series Masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: Regulus Black x GN!Reader
Notes: Cheers to another summer break! The not canon compliant warning is starting to become more apparent. The slow burn is burning a bit.
Tumblr media
The weeks following the confrontation at the Ministry left the Wizarding World at a standstill, the alleys and streets seeming to grey and titter in jumbled whispers and conspiracies. Minister Fudge could no longer make a public enemy out of Harry, having witnessed the return of Voldemort for himself. Unsurprisingly, Fudge resigned shortly after Dumbledore was reinstated.
Despite the retreat of public scrutiny from his back, Harry fared no better than he had the summer before, conceivably managing far worse. You don’t remember much after Sirius’ attack, only that Luna quickly rushed to your side and grabbed Regulus’ portrait from your hands, hiding it in your jacket as Auror Tonks made her way over to your glass-eyed form.
You could never thank Luna enough because you distinctly remember being unable to feel your limbs due to shock, and you’d rather not have to explain your portrait predicament. Tonks’ words barely registered, but you heard one thing loud and clear: Sirius was not dead.
But he did not get better.
Currently, he occupied a suite room at St. Mungo’s, his consciousness torn away as he remained in a frigid coma. After Harry had recovered from his clash with Bellatrix and Voldemort, he had nearly tackled you to the ground, realizing that your quick thinking to grab Sirius with your spell was the only reason he was still alive.
Breaking the news to Regulus was difficult since you knew how much he loved his brother, despite the strained relationship they had. Regulus was devastated by the news and he seemed to pale further when you told him that it was Bellatrix that got him. Pureblood family issues were so complicated.
After your brief conversation about Sirius’ status, neither of you had the energy to talk about Regulus’ disappearance, so you ended up pocketing away his portrait.
Despite the relief you felt because Regulus was back with you, you couldn’t bring yourself to face him just yet. Your reluctance to face him again led you to leave him in your pocket for a few weeks without talking to him.
However, you knew you’d have to face him eventually, and it was just the opportune time to do so. Harry and the Weasleys were going to spend the summer at the Burrow, but you pleaded with Dumbledore to allow you to return to Grimmauld Place under the guise that you would research ways to help Sirius.
Bellatrix had hit him with a highly complex dark curse, one that was foreign to the healers at St. Mungo’s, meaning that it was likely a curse found in the Black library.
Your excuse wasn’t a lie, but it was far from the whole truth. You also wanted to further explore your magical connection with Regulus and the disappearing room, still perplexed by the wisp of magic you felt last time. But it seemed that there was little use hiding that fact from Dumbledore, as he gave you a small, all-knowing smile before giving you permission, “The world seems to have strange ways of bringing people together. I do hope you find what you are seeking.”
At first, your heart nearly gave out because you assumed that he had used legilimency on you, but your ring gave no indication of it, so you presumed it was just a Dumbledore thing.
It seemed that Dumbledore and Luna were aware of Regulus’ existence to some degree, which was no surprise, one was a legendary wizard, the other an understated seer. Their knowledge only served to worry you though, as you weren’t confident that Voldemort was none the wiser to Regulus’ existence now.
If Dumbledore knew with what limited time you spent around him, there was no doubt Voldemort was itching from suspicion.
Vengeance was practically Voldemort’s middle name (even if Harry insists that it’s Marvolo). You still had no idea how Regulus had wronged Voldemort, but you weren’t sure if you wanted to find out for the sake of your own sanity.
As the green flames engulfing your vision slowly dissipate, you carefully step out from the floo network and brush away the ash from your clothing. Spinning around, you faintly smile at the nostalgic environment. Grimmauld Place was far from a welcoming home, but it had a certain knack for bringing along pleasant surprises.
Before you can set out to dive into research, a popping sound has you whirling your head downwards towards the noise.
“Master Regulus’ friend is back” Kreacher’s voice is tuned with surprise, but he looks pleased to see that you’re alone, evidently still not as accustomed to your friends or the Order members. You were secretly quite flattered to have the elf’s approval–not that you’d ever admit it to anyone.
Grinning down at the elf, you wave as he moves to grab your trunk, “Hi, Kreacher. I’ll be here awhile, I need to research a few things to help your Master.”
“Help Master?” Kreacher turns his eyes to you in apprehension.
Nodding solemnly, you release a small sigh before answering, “Yes, he’s been in an accident.”
At your words, Kreacher’s grip on your belongings loosen, turning to look at you with a face full of anguish, “What is wrong with Master Regulus?!”
Sputtering a little from shock, you quickly placate the elf, still reeling at the fact that he was capable of that much worry, “No, no, Regulus is fine. I’m talking about Sirius, he was cursed by a dark spell and the healers don’t know how to fix it.”
Kreacher’s tense form relaxes considerably and he grunts, turning back to his task of gathering your items, “So, Master Sirius still breathes? Pity.”
Expecting a far more violent response at the news, you simply nod, allowing silence to blanket between the both of you. You briefly considered asking the elf if he was knowledgeable of Bellatrix’s ledger of favorite curses, but decided it would be your last resort.
You weren’t sure if Kreacher would be of much help considering it involved Sirius.
“Kreacher, I’ll be in the library. You can put my things in the guest room I stayed in last summer.” Your words are met with a slight nod and that’s all the sign you need before you’re bounding up the stairs and in the direction of the expansive library.
Much of the content filling the shelves of the sealed library were enigmatic, but you hoped that you could kill two birds with one stone and find information for both of your goals. How lucky that both of your problems involved the Black brothers.
As you trailed through the aisles of shelves, running your finger along the leather-bound books, you sighed as you realized you were putting off your chat with Regulus. At first, it was truly because you didn’t know how to breach the subject of his portrait traveling, but now it was also because you felt guilty for avoiding him for so long.
Rip the bandaid off, stop stalling or he’ll really leave this time around.
Reaching into your jacket, you carefully extricate the frame out of your pocket, bringing it to eye-level. Plastering on an unsure smile, you feel relief flush through your veins as Regulus greets you with his own soft smile.
“Little bird, it’s been a while.” Regulus’ voice is smoother than you remember, and you find yourself shuffling around as your heart begins to pound uncomfortably. Bloody crush giving you heart palpitations.
“Hi, Reg. It has been. I’m sorry for not talking to you sooner, I’ve just been thinking.” Even though your excuse was flimsy at best, Regulus shakes his head firmly, as if all was forgiven on your part.
Warmth shines in his eyes as he alleviates your worries, “It’s not your fault, it is entirely mine for mindlessly leaving you alone that day without a word.”
Shocked by his initiative to bring it up first, you can only nod mutely as he continues, “I’m sorry, Y/N. My reason for leaving…it was entirely childish, and these few weeks of not communicating with you allowed me to contemplate some more. I want to be honest with you, if you’re up to hear it.”
“Of course, and I want to be honest with you as well, Reg.” Your nod and soft smile seem to strike a chord in him, causing him to emit a low laugh of fondness.
Tilting his head to the side, his eyes seemed to shine brightly at you, “You’re always honest with me, little bird. I think I owe it to you—to us, to be transparent this time around.”
You have to make a conscious effort to stop his ‘to us’ from replaying over and over again in your head.
Huffing in playful annoyance at his ability to endlessly fluster you, you decide to take a stab at his declaration, “Alright, if you’re sure, then…I guess we should start with the most obvious question, why did you leave that night?”
Dragging his hand up to tuck a loose curl behind his ear, he gives a little pause before answering you, “I was scared.” Seeing your confused look, he continues, “I was scared because…your injury. When I saw it, I was furious–and not at you, but towards Umbridge. I was terrified because I care for you… so much, but there’s nothing I can do to help you in those kinds of situations.”
He cares. It was so different hearing it verbalized by him.
The stress weighing on you seems to melt away, the furrow between your brows letting up as you lightly come to your own conclusion, “So you left because you were angry.”
He shakes his head lightly, “It was not just anger, but also fear. Frankly, I feel a sense of devotion to you and I was frightened by it. I left because I thought that it would be logical to languish my connection to you, but I realized how foolish my thoughts were. I am stuck with you, just as you are stuck with me.”
His words were genuine, but you could tell he was dancing around a deeper meaning. Still, you were glad for his honesty. It was a step forward in your relationship.
You feel yourself getting choked up by his announcement, but before you can even muck up a response, he continues, “I was anxious that day, before I even took notice of your wound. Before you casted that muffliato, I had heard the blast and thought that you were being attacked. But I waited to hear your voice, maybe a reassurance that it was all okay. When everything became muffled, I was worried that you were hiding everything from me because something was happening to you.”
“Oh.” Well, when he put it like that, it’s no wonder he was so furious that day.
He nods at your realization, finishing his explanation quietly, “You are so kind, little bird. Even in that moment where you could have been in danger, you still put your consideration for me first. It’s scary to think, but I know…I know that I would do the same if the roles were reversed.”
“You know that I care for you deeply as well, Reg. We’re in this together.” It comes out slightly watery, but your words are firm and the vulnerable glint in your eye eased Regulus’ tension.
Reinvigorated by Regulus’ words, you decide to bring up the topic that had been troubling you for a while, “I was honestly unsettled by my attachment to you as well. I’m unsure of what to make of it, some days it feels unreal. I just don’t understand it all because logically, you’re a portrait, but deep down, I know that there is so much more to you. You’re not like any ordinary  portrait I’ve stumbled upon.”
Nodding as if expecting the topic to be brought up, he straightens up and clears his throat, “I suspected you felt this way, and honestly, I’m not entirely sure why I’m so different. I know there might be a few possibilities as to why, but I feel as though I am missing a part of the answer, myself. When I left you that night, I was able to spy on a few portraits in the castle. Of course, I couldn’t reveal myself since they would have recognized me, but, from what I observed, most portraits are not as…dynamic as me. Even the most complex ones at Hogwarts seem to be entirely derivative.”
Not quite expecting Regulus’ loss for answers as well, you can only seem to reach one conclusion, “So the answer to all of this…it happened shortly before your death then?”
“Yes, it’s highly likely. After all there was a two week gap of radio silence between the last visit from my living-self and his untimely death.” Regulus’ confirmation has you suppressing a groan. It seemed like you wouldn’t be getting a clear answer so easily, but perhaps Regulus left clues on the research he was doing before his death around the library.
Humming as you feel a headache coming on, you decide to let the topic drop there, “It’s okay, we don’t need all the answers right now. But I’m glad we had this conversation, and I hope that in the future we can continue to be honest with each other.”
Regulus smiles at you, “Of course, little bird. But I’m curious, any news on my brother or about the Dark Lord?”
A small frown tugs at your lip as you’re brought down to reality, “No changes in Sirius’ condition, but I’m hoping that maybe we can find some clues here. Unfortunately, Voldemort is making his move in bold ways, he’s truly an incisive foe. He murdered Amelia Bones last week, it was all over the press, even the muggles covered it.”
Taking notice of how your voice catches at the end, he returns your frown, “I didn’t know you were fond of Madam Bones.”
“I was quite partial to her morals, and she was an accomplished witch, to boot. Plus, I know her niece. She has no guardian now. Voldemort murdered her parents during the war.” Shaking your head at the turn of events, you can’t help but feel a sense of unease at Madam Bones’ death.
Voldemort was moving rather quickly. There was no telling what his next move was going to be. This wasn’t the first time he was able to strike down a famously powerful wizard or witch, even in his revived state, he was just as remarkable of a wizard. He was slowly removing the pillars that held up the Light side’s confidence, at this rate, Dumbledore was going to be the only one left to look to.
No use in overwhelming yourself, take it one day at a time.
Lowering Regulus’ portrait slightly, you begin to peruse through the book titles on the shelves, trying to find anything synonymous for “dark curses and hexes”. You were hoping that the search for the curse would be quick, but unfortunately, it seemed that the entire library was just pooling to the brim with parchments about the Dark Arts.
“Hey, Reg. Do you have any idea where Bellatrix might have learned such a troubling curse? Any area of the library I should focus on?” Your words were meant as more of a joke, but Regulus’ contemplative expression has you stopping in your tracks to focus your attention back on the boy.
Rubbing his chin, he seems to map out some ideas in his head, “During our last conversation, the day Sirius was cursed, you said his muscles seemed to constrict before he went limp and then he dropped into a coma?”
You nod in confirmation at the pointed assessment, wondering just how useful the symptoms could be at narrowing down the possibilities.
Why couldn’t Bellatrix have used another curse of milder lethality with far more ridiculous effects? Coma, really? Why not puking up tarantulas or something? While it would make for a ghastly sight, it would be ridiculous enough to make the hex more apparent.
After a few more moments, Regulus seems to have a lead of some kind, “I don’t have an exact answer, but it does remind me of a time when I was younger and Bellatrix would talk in circles about experimenting with soul magic. She wanted to impress the Dark Lord, so it’s no doubt something of that caliber.”
“Soul magic?” You punctuate the words in disbelief, realizing that the circumstances might be far more dire than anyone could have fathomed.
Realizing that you had no idea where to even begin, you decided to enlist some help, “Kreacher!” You weren’t exactly sure if it was necessary to yell, but the action soothed some of the stress you were suddenly feeling.
A pop echoes around the library and Kreacher stands before you in mild irritation, “Kreacher has been called?”
Placing a hand on your hip, you try to seem authoritative with your command, “Yes, Kreacher I need your help. Could you gather up all the books on the property that concern soul magic or soul hexes?”
The elf’s eyes seem to light up at your words, clearly thinking that you were taking interest in the Dark Arts. The prospect wasn’t exactly improbable, but you were much too reluctant to choose soul hexes as an introduction.
“As you wish. Kreacher will begin right away.” After giving you a razor-sharp grin, he’s gone in the blink of an eye and you hear a distant pop ring from deeper in the library. Hopefully, Kreacher could be trusted to keep your little research topic a secret, you would not fancy having to explain to your friends why you were researching such a dark subject amidst Voldemort’s return.
As you begin to make your way out of the room, you bring Regulus’ portrait back up to your face, “Reg, there’s something interesting I discovered the night you left. I was wandering around the castle-” looking for you “-and I spent the night in the Room of Requirements. Except it wasn’t exactly the Room of Requirements.”
Regulus looks both intrigued and full of reproof at your words, compelled to hear about your adventures, but displeased by your decision to break the rules and risk being punished further.
Brushing aside his concerns, you continue, “Well, while I was wandering around, I was thinking about you and where you might be, and the room that ended up appearing was the disappearing room that your portrait was originally in.”
Finding yourself in the kitchen, you carefully prop Regulus up against an empty fruit bowl before rounding the table to raid the cabinets. To your utter dismay, all the cabinets are empty, save for one filled with numerous knives. Groaning at the lack of food, you decide to plop back down in front of Regulus, cradling your empty stomach pitifully.
Shooting you an amused eyebrow raise, Regulus seems to consider your findings as you continue to mope, “That is fascinating. If it was truly the same room, then it must be as a result of something my human counterpart did whilst he was still alive. When I was first painted, the room already existed–that much I know. Although he was the only one who ever came into the room, I thought very little of it at the time.”
“It seems that all the answers about the strange magic surrounding you and the disappearing room vanished with him. How frustrating.” Your groan is cut off with a loud grumble from your stomach, causing you to slap a hand to your middle bashfully.
Entertained at your embarrassment from the strident noise, Regulus chuckles before putting you out of your misery, “Kreacher will be awhile with the books. It’s fine, go out and grab some food, we can talk after you’re done.”
Nodding glumly at his suggestion, you quickly pocket his portrait and feel around for your pouch of galleons. Once you’re ready to head out, you grab a handful of floo powder and ready yourself for human interaction.
Merlin, you were so looking forward to being a recluse the entire break.
The feeling of becoming a hermit only grew as the rest of the summer dragged along. Kreacher managed to snag a little over a dozen books about soul hexes and magic for your research, keeping you occupied indoors for a majority of the break.
You only managed to stay sane because Regulus kept you company, and for that, you could never repay him enough.
The last few days of July flickered by and soon you were preparing yourself to enter the familiar floo network to make your way to the Burrow. It was finally Harry’s 16th birthday, and you intended for it to be a happy one, needing some semblance of normality as war shifted on the horizon.
“Little bird.” Regulus’ voice pierces through your concentration as you finish taping the last fold of wrapping on Harry’s gift.
“Hm?” Your distracted hum has him rolling his eyes playfully.
Tilting his head, he finally speaks up once your eyes meet his, “You do know that there’s a spell to do the wrapping for you?”
“What? And miss all the fun?” Your teasing words have him looking unimpressed, “Besides, it has more meaning to do it by hand, Reg. You can see all the little imperfections, for example, this little uneven crease on the bottom.” As you show him the bulky wrapping, he can barely disguise his look of amusement.
Shaking his head, he crosses his arms as a pensive look crosses over his expression, “We should try something before you head out.”
Tying a silk ribbon around the wrapped gift, you peer up at him in interest, “Sure, what’s on your mind?”
“I think we should try out those charms you found a while back.” His words surprise you since you figured he still held reservations about the risks of the Mens est Oculus charm.
Sitting up straighter and reaching for your wand, you can’t help but voice your confusion, “Not that I’m opposed to it, but why now?”
“It would put me at ease to be able to talk to you, just in case.” His words are touching and you’re much too pleased to dismiss his concerns. On the one hand, you were only going to the burrow, on the other, you were aware of how risky it was to be out and about since death eaters were slowly strengthening their forces.
Giving him an understanding nod, you furrow your brows in concentration before casting the charms. Luckily, you had much time to imprint the movements and incantations in your head so it only took a little pause to cast.
Quirking your lips in uncertainty, you slowly bring your wand down, unsure if the charms were put into place.
‘Reggie? Can you hear me?’
‘Impressive work, little bird. Not that I doubted you.’
Gasping loudly at his voice, you reel back in your seat to gape at a pleased looking Regulus, “Woah!”
Laughing at your shock, Regulus opts to merely respond through your newfound mind link, ‘Woah indeed. Now, it’s about time for you to head out, no?’
As you tucked Regulus’ portrait away underneath your pillow and headed down to the floo network, you couldn’t help the victorious laugh that escaped you.
It seemed that every summer was more eventful than the last, and you were hopeful that you could spend many more summers in the future with the boy who was slowly winning over your heart.
Reaching out into your mind link one last time, you send Regulus a fleeting farewell.
‘Stay safe, little bird.’
And then green flames were filling your vision.

Prompt 21 - Attack
@jegulus-microfic February 21 Word count 962
Previous part First part
Regulus returned to the library to finish his book. It was gruesome, but he couldn’t leave it half-finished. He flipped the page to the next chapter and paused. Horcrux. The title read. He remembered seeing something mentioned about them before. They were a particular branch of dark magic that split the soul if the wizard committed a murder, allowing the killer to place a shard of their soul into an object.
There wasn’t much on them in this text, so he spent the next few days pouring through multiple tombs, checking references and extracts.
Finally, he found what he was searching for. The page lay open before him, the only illustration he’d ever seen depicting a wizard who had split his soul. The wizard’s skin had an odd, lifeless quality to it. His eyes glinted red, and his hairline had clearly receded. This was it. This was what he’d been missing.
He felt heat radiate from his pocket. He pulled himself away to answer James’s call. He flicked the mirror open and revealed James’s stressed face.
“There’s been an attack.” James started speaking immediately. He didn’t even say hello. "It’s Sirius. He’s in a bad way. They took Remus.” Regulus felt the air bleed out of him as he struggled to control his emotions. “He’s going to be fine.” James carried on. “He hasn’t let Remus out of his sight, sticking close to him. We warned him he’d get hurt, but he’s stubborn.”
“Can I see him?” Regulus’s cracked voice whispered. James’s eyes filled with pity.
“I don’t think they’ll allow that, love. He’s in a safe house. They won’t even let me go without prior consent.”
The wards around Grimmauld Place reacted to someone trying to get in. He could feel the magic tugging at him.
“I have to go, James. Someones here. Tell—tell Sirius—tell him I’m sorry.”
“I will. Stay safe, Reg.” Regulus quickly shut the mirror and stuffed it into the secret pocket in his robes.
When he opened the door, he was surprised to see Evan and Barty standing there.
“Fucking finally!” Barty grumbled. “I’m freezing my bollocks off here!” Regulus didn’t respond just let the door swing open more and stepped back to allow them to enter. He didn’t say anything until they were securely in the house.
“Why are you here?” He asked, his eyes narrowing.
“Aww, aren’t you happy to see us? Evan, I don’t think he loves us any more, now that pretty boy’s back in his life.” Regulus turned his attention to Evan and raised an eyebrow.
“We’ve come to drop off the new information we’ve collected. We thought it would be better in person rather than sending it via owl.” Regulus nodded.
“Yes, you’re right. Voldemort placed charms around the house, preventing owls and patronuses from entering. I doubt he’s removed them. It’s definitely safer to be here in person. Shall we go up to the library?
He listened to them relay the information they’d gathered. He wrote everything down in the notebook. Once they were done, he spelled it so the writing disappeared.
Evan and Barty settled in. They’d have to be here for a few hours to avoid suspicion. Regulus had a question that had been niggling at the back of his mind since the last time he’d seen them.
“So,” He started, “Lily Evans?” He didn’t need to say more. Evan and Barty had gone pale and glanced uneasily at each other.
“What about her?” Evan cleared his throat nervously.
“I saw her sneaking into Pandora’s room as I left the other night. How long has that been going on?”
“Erm,” Evan looked at Barty again as they silently decided how much to tell him. “Since school. They had to keep it secret for obvious reasons.” Regulus nodded. He was well aware of the implications of a Slytherin and a Gryffindor dating with the way things had been and still were. He left it at that. Perhaps he’d ask more from Pandora the next time he saw her.
He pulled his book towards him and turned it towards Evan and Barty.
“I’ve been glancing through a few of the texts in here over the last week. I found something interesting. Please have a look at this and tell me what you think. Does it remind you of anyone?
Barty and Evan peered at the yellowed pages and the faded illustration.
“Yeah, looks like ole mouldy Voldy. Barty cackled, looking at Regulus for his reaction.
“That’s actually pretty accurate.” Regulus laughed under his breath. “These are the effects on the body after creating three Horcruxes.”
“Shit, you don’t think?” Evan gasped. Barty was uncharacteristically quiet and paler than usual once the information sunk in.
“So—So you’re saying that if he has created Horcruxes. Then he’s made more than three? That’s a lot, right? I mean, he looks insane. It’s way more than three.” Barty was tapping his fingers against his jiggling leg. Regulus nodded.
“I think we found the missing piece as to why he’s so far been unstoppable. He is by all rights immortal.”
“So, what do we do about it? Pretend we never started helping the Order and just slink back into the fold?” The fear was evident in Barty’s whole demeanour. Evan put a reassuring hand on his shoulder as he quietly looked to Regulus for his answer.
“No, we continue listening and gathering information. If he’s created Horcruxes, he has to be hiding them somewhere. Someone must know where they are and what they are.” He straightened his back more than it already was, his resolve firmly in place. “We will be careful, act as we normally do. Carry out orders as we usually would, and at the same time, we start searching.”

I Fall On Grass
Drarry ~ T ~ 3k ~ Friends to lovers, late 30s single dads style
Written as a birthday gift for @sweet-s0rr0w who I am very lucky to have in my life. This Harry is a bit of her and a bit of me, so I won't go through all the references, but it's worth noting that Harry's potions shop in this fic is set just off Diagon, in the same location as Draco's shop in sweet's incredible fic, Nor All That Glisters. Happy birthday, matey, and here's to you.
Harry has a garden.
It’s a good one, as gardens go, long and well-drained and south-facing, all the things Harry didn’t realise mattered back when he moved into Grimmauld Place straight after the Battle, and the garden was a near-wilderness filled with brambles and overburdened fruit trees and the nightly shriekings of urban foxes.
Right down near the fence, where the grass is longest, the wildflower seeds that Harry scatters every year have brought forth flowers. When he first started sowing them, Harry didn’t know what any of them were called, just liked the colours and the smell and the wistful way the slender stems bent and danced in the breeze. But he found a good book in the library, and then read more books, and now he knows the names for all of them. He had never really liked Herbology at school but these days he can appreciate the careful magic of it, the way something grows from nothing, the way tough things can look delicate, the way things in nature can not just survive, but thrive, even when they’re neglected.
Sometimes Harry recites all the plant names to himself when he can’t sleep; yarrow, he says, which is also called seven year’s love and old man’s mustard and nosebleed and soldier’s staunchweed and Achillea millefolium. Harry read in his plant book that Achilles used it to pack wounds on the battlefield, and if it was good enough for a demigod, it’s good enough for Harry’s Sanguine Salve. It’s good for boundary setting, warding off evil, luck in love. Pretty impressive stuff for a plant Harry grew out of a seed ball he picked up half price in the little B&Q on Holloway Road.
Meadow cranesbill—that’s for love too, though maybe everything is, in its own way. Bees adore it, snails hate it, Harry thinks it’s pretty and he snips little bunches to put in the vase beside his bed so that particular delicate blue is the first thing he sees when he wakes.
Toadflax, for breaking hexes; Draco likes that one, thinks it’s useful. For Draco’s last birthday, the one he said he was too old to celebrate so no one was to get him presents, Harry had invited everyone round, including all the kids, and when Draco arrived Harry had given him his not-a-present. A protective charm; linen thread coated with wax, and three Toadflax blossoms strung along the thread, Harry’s Stasis and layers and layers of his protective magic laid over the plump little flowers with their wide mouths and full orange throats. Draco had loved it; he had laughed and laughed, told Harry he was turning into a proper hedgewizard.
He has it hanging on the door of his office in Hogwarts, James told Harry, looking disgusted. “He’s just as much of a saddo as you are, in his own way,” James had added with a sniff. “Flowers, honestly. Just ask him out, Dad.”
Just ask him out sounds easy but Harry feels like it might be impossible in practice, especially when there’s so much to lose. So Harry goes on growing flowers, and Draco keeps coming over at the weekend, and even though there is probably a limit to the amount of times that Harry can watch Draco eat a Magnum without pushing him down into the grass and kissing the taste of ice-cream out of his mouth, he hasn’t quite reached that yet. So it’s fine.

The Wake-up Kiss by Justlikewriting
This time, when Harry found himself without a date for the Ministry Yule Ball, Parvati Patil was unable to step in. So, he was left with the only other viable option: to ask Draco Malfoy. Which would be fine, of course: it had been twelve years since the war after all. And they saw each other regularly now, meeting up with the same group of friends almost every Friday night. Harry, however, obviously hadn’t taken into account just how insufferable Zacharias Smith could be. Rec Post

Do you fics that portray Harry as academic/"book smart" or that are not focused on Harry being a man of action/ physically powerful wizard? I crave a trope reversal :)
Hi anon! Ohhh that’s a great one, I’d love to see more academic/researcher Harry in fic. I got a couple recs for you, you might also enjoy my rec list with odd jobs :)
Forget Our Heritage by dwell_the_brave (T, 16k)
When Harry Potter returns to England to take the All Souls Fellowship Examinations, the last person he expects to see in Oxford is Draco Malfoy. After all these years, has Malfoy truly changed?
Faint Indirections by ignatiustrout (T, 30k)
Draco Malfoy is the last person Harry expects to turn up in Boston, Massachussetts. But now he's here, and he won't stop requesting books from the library where Harry works.
The Unplottable Time Conundrum by @writcraft (E, 45k)
When the past starts bleeding into the present at Grimmauld Place, an old academic article pulls Draco Malfoy out of his life of luxury. Haunted by the memory of a fleeting post-war kiss and thrust into the ghostly spaces inhabited by Unspeakable Harry Potter, Draco’s easy life is about to get a whole lot more complicated.
Among Ancient Pines by @graymatters (M, 74k)
Every day, Draco Malfoy tries. With every fiber of his being he tries. But he doesn’t much think about what he’s trying for. In his final term of Healer training, Draco is unfortunate enough to find himself on a plane, the only means of traveling to a small, magical town in rural Alaska. Years of hard work have culminated in an opportunity to work with an experimental wandmaker to study the intersection of Healing and wand theory. When Draco arrives, he doesn't find the wandmaker, but does find his apprentice, who happens to have ridiculously messy hair, a lightning bolt scar, and a definitely-not-charming smile.
Azoth by @lol-zeitgeistic (E, 88k)
Now that Harry is back at Hogwarts with Hermione for eighth year, he realises that something’s missing from his life, and it either has to do with Ron, his boggart, Snape, or Malfoy. Furthermore, what, exactly, does it mean when one’s life is defined by the desire to simultaneously impress and annoy a portrait? Harry has no idea; he’s too busy trying not to be in love with Malfoy to care.

Harry growing his hair long because since he was a child, that was the only thing he could control: his hair was wild and free and Aunt Petunia could not cut it.
He liked his hair, it was thick and dark and he had control over it. So he decides to grow it out.
But Harry was never really good at planning ahead. By third year, it reaches his shoulders and he shyly takes Hermione to the side to ask her about proper hair care. Hermione frets about using conditioner (Harry does) and actually brushing it (Harry doesn’t) but she can only give him vague tips because while Harry’s hair is a mess of unruly locks, Hermione’s curls are tight and messy in a completely different way.
Hermione eventually comes back to him after some thorough research at the library and a round of questions to all the other girls and is able to handle Harry a neatly written list of products that would help keep his hair healthy.
When Harry stumbles into the dormitory with new bottles, Ron raises his eyebrow and asks him if he’s finally decided to take care of that bird nest. Harry nods and Ron smiles before asking him if he’d let Ron brush it. ‘You always look like you’d rather eat a pile of Hippogriff dung,’ Ron reasons and Harry barely hears it because his mind is going haywire. He asks Ron if he knows anything about hair care anyways and Ron laughs, reminding him of Ginny and that’s the day Harry finds out his best friend can tie up a mean french braid.
He thought that letting people touch his hair would be dreadful. Harry was so sure he would hate every second of it, but instead he finds it quite delightful. When Ron’s fingers run through his locks and when Hermione rests a hand on the back of Harry’s head, he can’t help but feel calm and content. It gets presumably bad when the feeling of contentment is replaced by a proper backflip inside his chest as Ron fixes one of Harry’s bangs behind his ear. Harry tries not to think about it.
When he meets Sirius for the first time, he has long hair too. It is nothing like his, Harry thinks. Sirius’ hair is worn and thin and damaged by years of neglect and malnutrition, but the way it falls over his shoulder feels like a telltale of what it once used to be. Glorious.
It takes a while for Sirius’ hair to start looking healthy again. When Harry used his bathroom at Grimmauld Place he finds the shower supplied with the same products he would keep in the Gryffindor Tower’s lavatories and he feels warm. Maybe he could ask Sirius about his hair routine.
One day during a summer Harry is spending at Grimmauld Place, Ron galaxies away, he makes his way to the armchair Sirius is sitting on in the living room. Brush in hand, he shyly asks Sirius if he would like to fix his hair up for him a bit and Sirius smirks before saying he can do much more than that. That’s the day Harry starts considering braiding hair flawlessly might just be a Pure-blood thing.

hello trying smth. a bit. different under the cut?
Druella
Bellatrix is born on Halloween. On October 31st 1951, she becomes the eldest daughter of Druella and Cygnus Black, and she doesn’t cry. She just peers up at Druella with wide-round eyes and a calm, unaffected disposition. It’s eerie. It’s haunting. That’s something that always worried Druella– the Halloween birth, Bellatrix’s refusal to come into the world kicking and screaming and fighting for air like a normal child would. Druella worries that Bellatrix is cursed, born on the day of skeletons, death, evil spirits, and darkness. She tried to hold out a few more hours, she begged the mediwitches at St. Mungo’s to delay the birth somehow through grunts of pain and the sweat forming on her brow. She attempted to not push through her contractions, but it was pointless.
“They say babies born on Halloween are immune to evil spirits,” the mediwitch whispers to Druella as Cygnus sleeps in a chair in the corner of the room, arms crossed and shoulders slumped. “The veil between the living and the dead is thinnest tonight. So she’ll probably have a strong connection with the spirit world. She might even be given the gift of second sight,” she adds sagely, attempting to calm Druella’s fears. “A blessing.”
Druella holds Bellatrix in her arms, she’s sleeping and swaddled in a soft blanket, a peaceful expression on her face, but Druella can’t escape the feeling of hesitant fear bubbling beneath the surface. A bomb waiting to explode. “She didn’t even cry,” she lets out an exhausted sigh.
The mediwitch gives her a soft smile. “It happens. Her heart rate is stable and she is breathing normally. She’s perfectly healthy.” The witch finishes cleaning up a few things around the room and removes her gloves. “Be sure to let me know if you need anything. Someone will be here to check on you shortly.” As she turns to leave, she pauses for a moment with her hand on the handle, debating something. Then, with a quick look back and a sharp breath she says, “It’s going to be okay.”
Druella wishes she could believe her.
Bellatrix grows a little every day. She’s healthy, she never cries, her bones aren’t weak, her limbs aren’t mangled, her cheeks are pink and fat and not sallow. She looks nothing like a cursed child, acts nothing like a cursed child, except for the small birthmark just below her left cheek. A bad witch’s mark.
Walburga and Orion come to the house to see the new baby. A cruel, satisfied smile overtakes Walburga’s features when she sees it’s a girl, confirming with her own eyes that the chance to have the next heir is still within her grasp, but Druella takes her own pleasure in Walburga’s still slender frame.
At least Bellatrix proves that Druella isn’t barren. She can have children, healthy children. She could provide an heir. It was only a matter of time. Walburga and Orion had been married nearly three years before Druella married Cygnus and yet their house remained empty.
Walburga always hated Druella. Hated that Druella and Cygnus got to live in 12 Grimmauld Place with the family heirlooms the libraries, the portraits, and the tapestry detailing their lineage. She always believed it should belong to her and Orion. Druella was a Rosier by birth. It was only right that true Blacks lived in Grimmauld. She had married Orion earlier. It was only right that she reside there. The next heir to the Black family name got to reside in Grimmauld. So it wasn't just a race to bare a male child, but also a claim to the family residence.
Because Druella can't help herself, she takes Walburga to the drawing room with the tapestry for tea and revels in the looks Walburga casts at the family tree.
Druella was barely healed from her first pregnancy when Cygnus demands that they try again. One child was only enough if it was a boy. She counts the cracks in the ceiling and does her best not to shout in pain in those early days after Bellatrix’s birth. She washes too many bloody sheets before anyone else can see them.
She tries to spend time in the nursery, but baby Bella, as the house elves had taken to calling her, hardly interests her. Cygnus never goes to the nursery to see Bellatrix, he couldn’t be bothered. Rather, he immerses himself in his work. Druella knows it is her job. It's her job to dress Bellatrix and feed her and bathe her and sing to her, but she leaves most of those tasks to the house elves.
Bellatrix feels like a stranger in her home. A thing rather than a person. Something haunted and hard to bond with, even if she looks just like a normal child. However, there was still a sense of pride, even if Bellatrix wasn’t a boy. Druella had given birth to a child. She could be a mother. She could do what was expected of her. She just needed a boy.
More days pass.
Druella busies herself with planning Christmas parties and elaborate dinners and pruning her winter garden of Christmas roses and Goose Grass. She attends charity meetings and plans galas for the Museum of Modernism and Moda. The mediwitches assure her that Bellatrix’s witch mark will fade as she grows older.
Days turn into months, and just after Bellatrix is ten months old, Druella finds herself pregnant once more. Cygnus’ once stormy mood had shifted to one of gentle ease. He comes home earlier, he speaks softer, and he scowls less. All of the ladies drop by to place their hands on Druella’s growing stomach, to offer their well wishes, to bring gifts.
This time, it was going to be a boy. Druella can feel it in her bones. All of the divination midwives say as much. She dreams about it.
“Of course, we’ll name him Sirius. Something strong and commanding. The brightest star in our sky,” Druella was saying over tea as Walburga pursed her lips tightly.
“I think that’s a wonderful choice,” Irma nods in approval. “Lots of Sirius’ in our family history. He’ll fit right in. Splendid.”
Druella catches Walburga’s eye and grins wickedly. This house is hers, this life is hers, the family favour is hers.
They decorate the nursery blue and paint constellations on the ceiling that glimmer in the dark. By the time April comes, Druella doesn’t even mind that it’s raining when she goes into labour. Torrential, thunderous skies and rolling black clouds. Another bad sign, but one she ignores happily.
Cygnus meets her at St. Mungos. He stands by her side and holds her clammy hand through the hours of painful birth. She hears the mediwitches buzz around her and whisper nervously as she screams in her potion-dulled pain. She worries about all the blood staining the sheets and feels her head heavy with Merlin knows what.
She struggles to keep her eyes open as hospital staff swarm around her and wheel her to another room with bright, artificial lights. She tries to listen to what they’re telling her, but their voices sound gargled and warped like they’re talking underwater. It’s too hard to keep her eyes open anymore. She lets herself drift off and she dreams of her son.
When she wakes, she’s in a new room. A quieter room. A mediwitch rushes in and places a swaddled baby in her arms. She talks in slow deliberate sentences.
Druella barely hears her.
Complications with the birth. Postpartum haemorrhage. Beautiful baby girl. So lucky.
Through chapped lips and a dry throat, she asks to see her husband.
The mediwitch informs her that he left shortly after the baby’s birth. She hands Druella some water.
Alone in a private room at St. Mungos, she decides to name the baby Andromeda. She holds the small infant to her chest, only hours old, and she weeps.
Cygnus barely looks at her. The days pass and Druella watches over the girls in the nursery and tiptoes around her husband as she tries to ignore the walls of the house closing in on her. She tells herself there is still time, though the doctors at St. Mungos disagree. They all tell her another pregnancy is risky. Fatal. Nearly impossibly in her state.
Druella doesn’t breathe a word of this to Cygnus or to anyone else. She shuts herself up in Grimmauld Place and avoids everyone’s prying eyes, their disappointed looks, and Walburga’s triumphant sneers.
As days turn into weeks that turn into months, Druella grows more and more desperate. She finds herself under the guise of heavy glamour charms, back in Knockturn Alley, begging the shopkeeper for more fertility potions. Pills that will ensure a male child. She swallows down glowing green vials of bitter liquid that smelled faintly of baby’s breath. She crushes up black beetle eyes and crunches into the red bulbs of Witch’s Ganglion with wild abandon on the smooth tiles of her bathroom floor, and she waits.
She leaves the family Christmas dinner early as she feels the familiar trickle of warm blood run down her leg. She stays in bed for days at a time. She leaves her two daughters to the house elf.
Her third pregnancy nearly kills her as all the doctors had promised. She tries to hide it from everyone as best as she can. Cygnus doesn’t bother showing up to the hospital with her.
On a cold and bleak day in early January, Druella gives birth to her third daughter. The chill from outside worms its way around her heart and solidifies in a sickly, icy, frost. Narcissa takes what little Druella had left with her that day and keeps it for herself.
Three daughters. Their little lives just beginning. Girls who will have hopes and dreams and ambitions. Druella feels all of hers dwindle as she hands her third child to the house elf once more. Their stories begin as hers ends. Druella thinks that it’s unfair, having girls. She married Cygnus to give him sons. Not to love him or to look after him in his old age. She was made to produce heirs. What use would she be to him now?
He’ll want to keep trying, even if it kills her. Without a boy in the family, Druella was better off dead to him anyway. She was plagued by awful visions of her own mother, shut up in a room all alone after the death of her brother. Too old to produce any more male heirs, her father left her mother to claw at the walls and floorboards of her bedroom. Allowed her to be shut out and ignored by every family member who was once so warm towards her. He locked her away in a dark, stale room somewhere for failing him, and acted as if she never existed.
She felt the frost seep in. Her daughters, her own children had damned her to the same fate. Even if they didn’t know it. How could she hold them and be happy? How could she wipe the tears from their face and act as if everything was fine?
She’d like to swim in the ocean, or work at the ministry, or travel the world by herself. She’d like to go out at night and not worry about a home she’s obligated to come back to. She closes her eyes and lets herself dream these dreams for a while until Narcissa’s shrill cries wake her up and she feels her fate close in on her all at once.

Grimmauld Series #1 "Scorpius and dear old Scarhead sharing a bonding moment in Grimmauld Place's abysmal library (if one could even call it that). Featuring dear Teddy's attempts to 'lighten up the place' by way of strings adorned with muggle 'fairy lights' (though upon further inspection their seems to be a distinct lack of fairies, so I assume he's taking the mick.) The absurdities one must put up with while surrounded by Gryffindork influence, at least Scorpius seems to be adapting to his new surroundings, regardless." - DLM
