After the stream ended, you very much had a whole fanbase — and heeseung? well, he's just there. fans eventually found your instagram account (you didn't mind, of course) and immediately started thirsting over you — boy was heeseung having a field day after revealing you to his fans

I'm not even a Leafs fan (or a Marner girlie! I like him fine but he isn't one of my main little guys!) but I've noticed how he's been treated by the fanbase, the media, the coaches (looking at you Babcock) for years and been absolutely appalled by it. I do think there's a strong element of misogyny underlying it all (and probably some homophobia), you're right and you should say it and I want to read that essay.

it's honestly ridiculous, and it's the same criticism that gets aimed at any hockey player who is smaller than average, except it's magnified due to it being the leafs and being toronto. he's always been treated this way, like people try to rewrite history and say they were fine with him before the contract but it's not true. babcock didn't even WANT HIM DRAFTED, but thankfully he wasn't the one making those decisions.

it got worse after the contract, but my thing is always that people don't realise where he was at at that time. he was still a rookie, under team control, and facing down years of being coached by babcock. babcock's contract only expired at the start of THIS SEASON. which means a young mitch was facing seeing a large portion of his career being coached by a man who didn't like him, wouldn't put him and auston on the same line, would take any opportunity to humiliate players he thought weren't good enough, like... I would've held out for the money as well.

the language people use for mitch is absolutely coached in homophobia as well, which comes all the way back to misogyny, because the worst thing these men who hate him can think of is being perceived as feminine. as weak. as less than a man in all the stereotypical ways. they'll throw homophobic comments at auston and willy as well, but they don't go full tilt misogyny because those two dudes are bigger, not as smiley, and they don't see them as being weak in the same way they see mitch. (which is wild because auston is the softest man in the world (affectionate))

these men see mitch as being weak, small, and too soft. they don't see the kid who fought his way to playing professional hockey despite being told at every turn he was too small. they don't see the kid with the lifelong passion for the leafs. the kid who always wanted to wear the logo on his chest and still wants that more than anything DESPITE all the criticism and hatred he faces. they don't see the kid who had to tell his dad to stop talking to him about hockey because he knew he'd never be good enough for him. they don't see that mitch is, actually, one of the strongest hockey players in the nhl for all he's been through to get to where he is.

they like to blame the contract and how much he's being paid, but that's an excuse. they hate him for not playing into the stereotype of a hockey player, despite being an ontario boy through and through. they hate him for being him, and staying faithful to who he is despite everything that has been thrown at him.

it would've been so easy for mitch to give in and become the person they all want him to be, but he didn't. he stayed true to himself and his kind and loving nature, and the fact that so many people don't appreciate that and would rather smear him, says more about them than it does about him.

#i missed all of the discourse this morning but its still heavy on my mind #for someone to say that louis needs to do a certain thing in order to support or validate that queer community just really breaks my heart #im not going to get into it not being his responsibility or into his closet #but saying that completely invalidates all of the 'smaller' things he has done throughout the years that not only show his support for the #community but also shows he is proud of his own sexuality #i feel like some that weren't here at the time dont realize how big of a deal it was for louis to have a rainbow on his shirt at the time #it was huge for the gay fans it may seem like a small gesture to some but it was the opposite #even if he hadnt acknowledged a rainbow project or the flags during otb it was such an important thing to even happen #people wouldn't bring their flags to a show if they didn't feel safe and louis made everyone feel safe without even saying anything and i #feel like people ignore that #it's just so belittling to who louis is as a person when they say oh he needs to do this for the community because this other thing he did #wasn't enough #he didn't have to wear those rainbows when he was being painted as homophobic everyday #he didn't have to write and release otb that so so many queer people resonate with #even just pointing at a flag in the crowd or telling a fan thanks for the flag love he didn't have to do that stuff #but he still did and whether it was for himself or for his large gay fanbase its still so important #and if those gestures are too small for you or you think that he needs to do more to validate you i think that's more a fault of yourself #rather than a fault of louis #okay i just had to get my thoughts out I'm done #and to clarify i dont think any of these gestures are 'small' gestures i think they're all incredibly important #but some seem to believe they're not big enough

No hardcore fandom has ever died so quickly and so completely as Veronica Mars. This is the story of its murder.

They should study Veronica Mars in Hollywood. I'm serious. It's an incredible story of how to go from "loud, passionate fanbase with its own fandom name that campaigns and advocates constantly for it" to "absolutely zero fucking interest" damn near OVERNIGHT with just ONE epically terri-bad decision.

If you weren't there, you don't understand: From 2007 to 2014, the fandom — the "Marshmallows," as they called themselves — were everywhere in the Internet's geek spaces, my friends. They routinely beat the drum about the series' three seasons and its excellence, lamented its cancellation, pushed others to give the show a try, and always - ALWAYS - proudly and loudly called for the series to be revived.

FULL DISCLOSURE/CONFESSION: I've not even watched that much Veronica Mars, frankly... ? Yeah, I'm sorry! it does seem pretty good from like the four-or-five hours I've experienced firsthand. I just never took the time to sit down with it. Regardless, I find fandoms and their dynamics — both how they operate internally and how they display to others externally — deeply fascinating. And I honestly find them easier to study from the outside than the inside. Like, if I'm IN a fandom, I'm more likely to stay in my corner and ignore places that seem negative. But being on the outside lets me just... absorb what's out there, looking into every forum without judgment. It's like studying pop-culture sociology or something? And it helps that I'm very close to some serious(-ly burnt) Marshmallows. It makes it so much easier to find and absorb the gamut of the fandom.

Besides: There is NO fandom story I've ever seen that's anything like what happened to Veronica Mars and the Marshmallows.

(Time to insert a brief explainer for the uninitiated: Veronica Mars was a TV series that aired from 2004-2007 on the now-deceased UPN network wherein Kristen Bell played the titular character, a high school girl whose single dad was a private detective in the fictional community of Neptune, California. She grew up working "unofficially" as his assistant, which meant that she herself was effectively a teenage private detective.

The three core elements of the series were: 1) Veronica investigating each week's big mystery with plenty of quips and snark, 2) Watching Veronica's various relationships develop and shift, with most of the focus given to a) her relationship to her father and b) Her romantic pursuits (which began as the Veronica/Duncan/Logan triangle before eventually becoming focused on the slow-burn, off-on Veronica/Logan love story), and 3) The gradual development of that season's "mytharc" — the overarching BIG MYSTERY that doesn't get resolved or wrapped until the season finale. So it went over the course of two seasons that took place in high school and the third, shorter season that was at the start of Veronica's collegiate career.)

Just how big and how passionate were the Marshmallows? WELL! When series creator Rob Thomas (not the Matchbox 20 guy) and star Kristen Bell announced the Kickstarter campaign for the Veronica Mars movie in March 2013, it achieved its heretofore-unprecedented goal of TWO MILLION GODDAMN DOLLARS within less than 12 hours. At that time, it was the biggest Kickstarter goal to ever succeed — and certainly the fastest to reach that kind of height. Fans fell OVER themselves to pay out for it. Hell, my own significant other was DEEP in the tank for VM at the time and invested enough to get multiple t-shirts as backer rewards as well as a disk copy of the movie when it eventually came home.

And AFTER the movie hit in 2014? It was thankfully beloved and embraced! The once-teenage characters were adults who were actually out living on their own and working for a living, but the fandom had grown up with them, so it wasn't like they were begging for them to stay young students. They embraced Adult Veronica and her new adventure. The fandom rejoiced loudly and continued to be all over the geek side of the Internet... where they, of course, still wanted more. Sure, there were new novels in the aftermath (which were written by the creator of the series), but most of the Marshmallows were calling for more movies or a streaming revival.

And then, at long last... season four was actually announced. And there was much (premature) rejoicing yet again.

Yes, Veronica Mars returned for a fourth season on Hulu in 2019. It was just eight episodes, and it was heavily centered on one season-long mystery instead of sprinkling that amongst a bunch of smaller ones, but it would still feature the same ol' Veronica. They promised a new, more "adult" mystery/investigation plus a strong focus on Veronica and Logan's love story.

New Hulu purchased the rights to the first three seasons and hyped up its presence on the platform while marketing the return for the new run. The marketing team played up the most popular quips from the show's history plus put out TONS of stuff centered on the Logan/Veronica ship to pump up the fans.

The season was dropped all at once using the classic Netflix "binge" model in July 2019. And then... afterwards?

There was a brief explosion of LOUD RAGE from the Marshmallows at what series creator Rob Thomas had to done to burn and spite the fandom and ruin his own goodwill.

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 4: See, at the end of the movie, Veronica and Logan finally entered into a long-term relationship. In season four, they've been dating for years, and Logan proposes marriage. But of course there has to be drama/obstacles: In this case, Veronica isn't sure she's ready to marry... or capable of being in a marriage. Ah, but of course she eventually realizes how much Logan means to her. The two are married, and, in the season finale... Logan is killed by a car bomb in the penultimate scene. The final scene is a flashfoward to a year later, where Veronica leaves Neptune alone.

For most fandoms, that'd be a memorable point of pain. A big ol' speed bump that ultimately throws some people off the bus, leaving only the die-hards. But the fact that fans had been invested in this relationship for literally 15 years and that Hulu (and creator Rob Thomas) had heavily marketed the new season as being a big romantic event for the ship... it was too much. Unlike the aftermath of the Star Wars sequels, there was no lingering group of die-hard fans who were open to whatever was next — at least no significant one. I did some Googling and could only find TWO people who still wanted another season.

Funnily enough? Critics LOVED this. Hell, Vanity Fair infamously penned an editorial about how Veronica Mars had "finally grown up" with this finale. I suppose all the other murders and deaths and drug overdoses and r*pe weren't "mature" enough before now for... some... reason. (The same editorial also featured the author openly hating on Veronica ever being in a relationship because it causes "arrested development" and declaring that the movie -- which was acclaimed by both critics AND fans alike, I remind you -- was a lame dud. So. The writer must be a reeeaaaal fun person.)

But a series doesn't live based on critical acclaim, as it turns out. The fandom was murdered overnight. "Marshmallows" stopped appearing in geek spaces online entirely. No one expressed interest in seeing the next season or the next movie. The constant flow of fan AMVs on YouTube and fanfics on AO3 dried up to nothing or damn nearly so.

Since 2019 ? Nothing. Chirping crickets. An intensely dedicated fandom of 12 years was just... vaporized.

I've never seen anything like it before OR since.

That's why it's so fucking fascinating.

So what went wrong?

Creator Rob Thomas was adamant about two things: ONE, the series was intended to be a noir show, which meant there couldn't be any happiness for its protagonist. And TWO, the death of Logan was necessary to evolve and grow the series.

Thomas thought that having Veronica in a relationship would be holding her back, and that a marriage would absolutely kill the series and leave her stagnant. It never even occurred to him that marriage isn't the end of a character's life and growth. It never occurred to him that plenty of drama can be had AFTER someone is married, or that development/growth could be that the characters mature enough to be capable of maintaining a committed relationship. Thomas' view of his own universe was so myopic that he couldn't conceive of any possible way that Veronica could still be a private detective involved in life-threatening investigations AND be married at the same time. Futhermore, he felt that fans just wanted Veronica to become a pregnant housewife, which is about as far from what Marshmallows were after as you can get without straight-up killing Veronica and/or Logan. He managed to do the only thing wronger than what he wrongly thought was their insistence.

On top of the above, Rob Thomas only viewed "noir" as a vehicle for total fatalism... despite the fact that many of the most famous noir stories are cynical and full of moral ambiguity, but they still feature a positive outcome. The Big Sleep still has the protagonist get the girl. The Set-Up arguably ends with the happiest possible ending in spite of the beating the hero receives.

Perhaps most importantly? Despite Thomas own insistence that Veronica Mars was always "noir," the majority of both TV critics and fans did not think that designation ever truly applied. I suspect that's the reason why Thomas decided to go as dark and fatalistic as possible: He wanted to be noir, and he was being told that he wasn't. So he went so far into noir that he killed his own most popular property.

He was adamant that it was the only way for the series to grow. But as it turns out, it was instead the only way for the series to permanently end. Without that season four finale, a passionate group of fans would still be begging for more. With it? It's over. Nobody fucking cares now.

That's kind of amazing.

yourusername: there is no full way to articulate my feelings right now. my fans have to respect my personal relationships and my boundaries. i appreciate your support but you have to understand that i am not your personal friend and you do not have the right to my personal life. i also understand that in sport, there are a lot of heightened emotions, but drivers do not owe you their safety. this is something i have felt for a long time since max and i became a public couple and the onslaught of hate came for him. you may say that it comes from a good place, or for my best interests, but the manner in which some 'fans' have expressed their 'worries' is unacceptable. i do not want to bite the hand that feeds me, but there's only so many slaps me and my loved ones can take from the hand.

bite the hand is out on all streaming platforms. please listen closely a re-evaluate your relationships with your favourite artists, thank you.

You were completely shocked by this, you knew about his fanbase and you knew they could be a lot but you were just sitting there. waiting for lilia to pack up his guitar and stuff so you could be on your way and now your getting called a tramp by this fan. Sadly this wasn't your first time having to deal with people like this from his fanbase, you were about to say something

But before you could say anything Lilia pop up from behind you and wrapped his arms around you a kissed you behind your ear "is something the matter?" Lilia heard everything, even if he was not in the room, he had good hearing despite his age. He looked at the fan member giving them a small smile trying not to laugh "I Don't think that kind of laugh was need do you?~ fu fu fu" he let out a small chuckle. Amused by the student

Malleus would be walking threw the halls with sliver, sebek and Lilia as they spotted the scene as the student grab you by the wrist, making Malleus angry as he march over. Thunder could be heard from the back ground as he glared at the student making them freeze "I would kindly ask if you let them go" he said his voice dark as sliver was trying to hold Sebek back from attacking

The student gulped "I'm sorry I didn't know th-" Malleus stop them "leave" it was rare for Malleus to be like this so this made you a bit shocked but smiled a bit seeing the student run with there tail in between there legs (if they had a tail)

After that he would try to keep you with him for the whole day but you, Lilia and silver had to convince him otherwise

You were with sebek in potions when you and Sebek were parted with a student , you were talking with the student for good while but they started to male you uncomfortable. That's when suddenly they tried asking you out In front of sebek

Sebek was about to snap at the student but you were already dealing with as you kindly reject them but in response "Come on~, I just want one date...i mean your a tramp with everyone el-" before he could even finish sebek slapped them "Shut the fuck up and don't speak to them!" He said before taking you to the teacher to get a new partner, you were shocked by his laugh. You never thought he would use that language but you just followed him a bit in shock knowing you should ask about that later. he keep his eyes on the student for the rest of class. The student left not feeling it worth it as sliver let out a small huff and closed his eyes again

my general Side Order thoughts:

I don't have much of anything groundbreaking to say. I haven't publicly said much in relation to side order in the first place, i don't want to build up crazy expectations, and I've seen much of the fanbase making solid theories anyways. also there has been a lot less information compared to ROTM which is great, I don't want to be able to predict the whole story before the game comes out. I'd rather be surprised like i was with octo expansion! here I just want to put out my thoughts real quick so people know where I stand and that yes i am aware of the Hints and Foreshadowing

Marina's quote at the end of her interview in Splatune 3 is relevant of course, gives us a sense of what this whole world of order is. But did she build it this whole digital simulation, or was it something she found? (mix of both perhaps? found it, contributed to parts of it and it went out of her control?)

Mem cakes, agent 8, cerebral theming...very interested where this all goes. love all the references to OE keep em coming

People have been talking about this already, and the foreshadowing was acknowledged back in haikara walker in 2018. the hat logos on dedf1sh and paul gotta be connected to this thing.

It'd be a huge waste for a more grown-up paul to not show up in s3, either as someone mentioned by Acht or for him to make some sort of musical return post side order.

Glen fiddler has always been interesting to me (in that i anticipated he would become plot relevant somehow) with how he was fully 3d modeled in his sunken scroll. im not 100% on if hes gonna be in side order but the copy machine connections in side order (the fish skeletons in splatoween, also the recent poster?) are sus

Hi ! this is my first time writing anything on tumblr - I used to make fics on wattpad like years ago so I'm a bit rusty, hopefully you guys will like my content enough for me to keep up with it - graybby <3

She's his sister?!

The door cracks open as Max rushes into Lando’s room giggling to himself.

“Mate guess what-” Lando’s head snaps up at the intrusion to what he was watching on his phone “what?” tilting his head questionably.

“You know that twitch streamer you watch Y/N?” - he definitely had his full attention now.

“SHE'S GEORGE'S SISTER!” Lando juts his lip out and tilts his head, confusion setting in.

Max laughs “George... George freaking Russell -you know?”

Lando’s face drops, jaw swinging open - “No fucking way… you-you’re lying to me, you have to be”

Max shakes his head, deadpanned trying to stifle another laugh. “How did you even find out?” the brunette says - shock written all over his face.

“George just posted on his private insta and it was a pic of them with HER private account tagged - last name RUSSELL”. Lando jumps to his feet running to snatch Max’s phone to see for himself still in disbelief.

His eyes scan the page immediately acknowledging the familiar last name she appears to share with the fellow driver he shares his races with.

“How the hell have they both kept this a secret? Does she even support him at the races? No one has ever spotted her at one " he remarks "Oh yeah - trust you to know that mate” Max pipes up earning a slap to the shoulder as Lando turns away grumbling.

Max laughs again “Maybe she hides away in the Mercedes garage, at least you might have a chance to be introduced to her now” Lando reddens at the thought of meeting his internet crush “Please shut up Max” he pleads trying to hide his blush behind his hands.

Max edges towards the door “Anyway, I’m going to bed - I’ll leave you to stalk her - night!”, “Whatever, night Max” he groans out as his friend shuts his bedroom door. He rolls over in his bed, reaching out he grabs his phone and wastes no time in searching for her account. Immediately finding said post on George’s page, he taps the tagged account - without a single thought he follows her. Turning his phone off his heart raced at the anticipation of whether she would even accept his request, him being an absolute stranger to her.

Ding!

He feels his stomach flip. She accepted! And followed me back! He feels his palms sweating. Rushing to his notifications he taps on her account and begins browsing through her posts, seeing a vast amount of aesthetic images - that give his .JPG account a run for its money- dating back a few years of her life, a sea of different hair colours and styles of clothing she has adorned over the years and still to his surprise a couple of candid shots of herself and George - a goofy smile worn on both their faces during a water fight on a beach holiday, his memeable pose in ski suits at a resort and most recently few shots from around the paddocks in Saudi Arabia from the last grand prix he had raced with George and the others only last week. Suddenly her change of streaming schedule and lack of main social media presence adds up - she’s been hiding in plain sight - supporting her brother while trying to maintain her distance from the Russell last name, probably knowing the craziness that would ensure if both the Formula 1 and her own twitch fanbase discovered who she was related to. He can’t help the smile gracing his face as he scrolls through her posts, staring at the smile that reaches her eyes in her pictures - capturing her beauty and personality oh so well. He wonders if she spent hours specially cultivating this flow of aesthetic images and if she had anyone in mind when she posted them as he ponders what else she might be hiding from her fanbase. Stop it Lando, he grunts to himself, a hundred thoughts clouding his mind she never mentioned in any stream that she had a boyfriend so calm down - but then again she literally hid her own brother and who he is. He continues doom scrolling her account much to his relief when he realises there's no evidence of a boyfriend in any of her posts - his thumb slips. Fuck!

His heart drops to his stomach as he realises he's liked one of her pics from two years ago. He immediately closes the app, quick to chuck the phone to the end of his bed as if it were physically hurting him to hold it any longer. He sighs and brings a hand up to rub his temples and tired eyes, glancing at his bedside table at the clock that reads two thirty AM, he decides he needs to try and sleep - hopefully she won't even notice.

As his eyes are fluttering shut he hears the dooming sound of an instagram notification.

Ding !

Oh fuck.
