When the Sky met the Sea (Platonic!Percy Jackson x Reader)
A/N: I was inspired to write this after reading the phrase ‘the sky meets the sea’ on a video!!! I was filled with inspiration 😍📢
Tumblr media
Percy felt as if the rain were drowning him. The thundering raindrops that crashed down on him was too much for him to handle while fighting this monster. The boy quickly ducked away from the monsters aggressive swing and away from the edge of the cliff. Further away from his saving grace, the sea.
He felt the energy in his body slowly draining from him the longer he fought. This battle had been going on for much longer than he would’ve liked, but he’ll admit, that was on him. He shouldn’t have pretended to play tag with the ferocious beast now in front of him.
Momentarily distracted by his thoughts, Percy was struck down by sharp claws. Riptide was thrown away from his hands. Thunder echoed in the distance. He looked up, fear finally growing in him at the state he was in.
The monster roared in triumph at Percy’s mistake, almost sounding like a wicked laugh. Percy tried shuffling away from the creature in front of him, praying to any god or goddess listening that Annabeth or Grover, or anybody really, would come save him. The monster stomped its giant paw right next to Percy’s small body.
Thunder and lightning sounded closer to the pair, not that the boy would notice anyway.
“No way I’m getting taken out by a giant lion.” Percy stared in horror as the monster opened up its mouth, canines gleaming in the lightnings light that seemed too close for comfort.
It all happened so quick that the boy had no idea what had happened.
One minute Percy is saying all his goodbyes and mourning all the things he never got to do, and the next, he’s watching with wide eyes as the lion monster is zapped away from his body.
“Get up, quick!”
Having absolutely no time to register anything, Percy scrambled towards the source of the mysterious voice that came out of nowhere. Looking backwards, he watched as the monster slowly got up and recovered itself, it’s side still sizzling from the sudden lightning strike.
Nearing the cliff, Percy finally looked towards his savior. Time seemed to slow down around him. Sea green eyes met with striking blue ones. Your narrowed eyes looked past him and towards the monster. Now noticing the sword in your hand, Percy watched with amazement as you lifted it above your head and into the sky.
Suddenly, lightning struck down on you and Percy fully believed you were cooked meat, the light emitting from the clash blinding him for a second until his eyes adjusted. There you stood, unphased by the strike as it looked like your sword was collecting the lightnings energy into it.
You yanked your sword back down, arm somewhat flinging itself at the recoil of the powerful strike. Swinging your sword toward the monster Percy had forgotten about, he watched with wide eyes as a blast came straight out and hit the beast square in the face.
The rain never stopped coming down even after the monster exploded into dust and disintegrated into nothing. Thunder and lightning continued striking down in the back as Percy slowly looked towards you again.
Breathing heavily, you looked to the boy who stared at you with green, awe-stricken eyes. Slamming the blade of your sword into the dirt below you, you spoke in a calm voice.
“Who are you?”
Percy couldn’t believe how cool you looked in that moment. Standing at the edge of the cliff, the waves crashing in the rocks behind you causing them to reach high heights, and the lightning that lit up your face enraptured him.
“Percy. Percy Jackson. Son of Posiden.” He had no idea why he had mentioned who his father was but it felt right in that moment. Huffing, you took your sword once again from the ground and transformed it back to its bracelet form.
“So you’re Percy Jackson. Well, it’s nice to meet you, I’m Y/N.” Walking past him, you picked up his sword and shoved it against his chest, urging him to take it. The boy fumbled with it a little before it transformed back to a pen.
“Child of Zeus.” Thunder once again struck in the back and this time Percy couldn’t help himself.
“You’re actually so cool.” Chuckling, you began walking towards the forest and away from the cliff, Percy eagerly following close behind, already asking questions left and right.
It was in that moment, the sky finally met the sea.

Funny thing about you mentioning Ratchet not liking anything non-Cybertronian, both Autobots and Decepticons got off lucky with a mostly normal Earth. I know a lot of different fandoms where Earth is so much more chaotic.
There's Kaiju No.8 with kaiju attacks being a very normal occurrence. Unlike Pacific Rim, the true source can't be reached, come in various sizes from human to skyscraper, there a good chunk of species settled into the wilderness, and the technology developed to handle these giant monsters are human sized exosuits that pack similar power to the Jaegers. Bots on both sides definitely have trouble since any kaiju living nearby will go territorial mode on their afts.
We got Resident Evil where viral threats are a very constant hazard. Cybertronians shouldn't worry about getting infected by mold/parasites/viruses that often cause these outbreaks. The concern comes from the monsters it spouts as some animals and humans don't just turn into simple zombies. A few have become kaiju sized monstrosities while some develop powers such as near Magneto level magnetism. If Smokescreen was squeamish with normal organics then he will absolutely hate this.
Then there's One Piece with its very diverse species and far greater oceans. We got literal sea monsters big enough to eat a bot whole to places with giant beasts or vicious flora that will can destroy boulders. Humans here being the most unpredictable threat as there are a large chunk who can obliterate mountains with sheer physical strength. We also got giants, dwarves, beast men, mermaids/merman, and even tribal angels that are just as dangerous. Not even gonna touch the fact there's sea devil enchanted capable of going living creatures super powers but can potentially give sentience to inanimate objects. Imagine the Allspark turning into a deer that can obliterate someone all because it got near such a fruit.
Plain ass earth is more manageable than these other options.
You get me.
It's also why I love thinking about an Earth where mythology, folklore, and urban tales were real at one point.
Mankind would have lived among gods and monsters and strange peoples, so thinking about all those implications, relationships, and roles Man would have shared with such beings is really fascinating, especially when humans are strange creatures themselves.
So that would also mean there are still places available to find them...
Imagine if they landed with the SCP Foundation? Or Nightvale? Supernatural? The universe of Old Gods of Appalachia or xxxHolic? American Gods? Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, or the Ancient Magnus' Bride? The Marvel/DC universe? Danny Phantom, Generator Rex, A Certain Scientific Railgun, or My Hero Academia?
And then add the tidbit that Cybertron and Earth are long-lost cousins!? Oh, the absolute pandemonium that would happen with a cyberization in TFP or Bayverse!

Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the olympians - how I would depart from the source material and write the first scene
the beginning of sea of monsters is def the least iconic of the books imho (aswell as the shortest book) so I propose an addition. We start with annabeth narration & flashbacks much like Percy’s in s1 ep1 & the book.
The books are from Percy pov but the show is not & this is the perfect chance to finally hear annabeths inner story in her own words as we never have since HOO is written in 3rd POV not first. We have many scenes from the book to take from, I think this will also help with the telling not showing issue some ppl have w/ s1 so far (even tho I don’t rlly agree) as we can see little annabeth rather than have her just relay it to Percy.
Short scenes I would include:
1. Annabeth building towers with cards/ playing w/ magnus. This scene is lifted from magnus chase as I am an unrepentant magnas chase stan. This will obv show her lifelong passion for architecture aswell as being a rare happy memory for her. We can do a similar tactic they have done for the di Angelo’s, hearing magnus but not seeing him or just seeing the back of his head or hands. This scene can also have her father arguing with his siblings to show how her being a half blood has already caused extreme tension in her mortal family for the danger it brings.
2. Next we’d continue showing the tension in her family as she feels her father growing increasingly neglectful and her negative relationship with her step family. This also shows if there is any discrepancy with Beth’s perception (narration) and reality (visuals).
3. Next, The spiders… the show owes us some spiders as we know so this is perfect chance to depict annabeths arachnophobia by showing her being attacked by them in her bedroom.
4. Finally, 7 yo Annabeth running away leading into 13 yo her running away again now looking for Percy in NY leaving her where she first appears in the book.
OR
5.Alternatively before cutting to Leahbeth we get one more scene of her meeting Thalia and Luke, and him giving her the dagger. I think this scene should be shown regardless to introduce Thalia’s actress (even tho younger actors would be needed for Luke & annabeth) as she appears in the final scene.
+ More scenes dispersed throughout the season like we have gotten for young Percy. Such as the family trio meeting Grover, them getting kidnapped and escaping the cyclops, Luke giving Beth the dagger, Thalia taking her last stand and being tree-ified etc.

Can someone please explain to me why there's a sudden influx of people saying that the Percy Jackson movies were good? The characters in the films were SO out of character! Like, that is NOT the trio we love. That is the good will trio. Grover was the character that was most of character, at least that's what I noticed, followed by Annabeth. Percy was kind-of a prick and was selfish. His reasoning to going on Clarisse's quest in the SOM movie was to go on it because he's the "chosen on." Grover doesn't get kidnapped until later on, and Tyson is also out of character. They straight up cut Sally out of the second film and had Percy choose to live at camp, for whatever reason. In the movies, Annabeth was so useless. She just stood there doing NOTHING. If she was cut out of the movies entirely, the movie wouldn't be affected that's how insignificant she was in the movies. If anything, she was a damsel in distress. She wasn't the one planning shit out like the books, that was all Percy, especially in Sea of Monsters(movie). In the SOM film, Annabeth literally tries to open the 4 winds thermos for whatever reason, despite supposedly being smart? And then Hermes had to tell her not to use the magic masking tape inside the warehouse. The movies dumbed her down. We barely even had Percabeth moments in the movies, too. So she's literally just there. OH and Percy is stupidly overpowered in the movies. Yeah, it can be argued that Percy was also overpowered in the books, but he at least he trained in the books while in the movies he's just powerful. I already had low expectations for these films when I watched them last night, but the movie was WORSE than I originally thought, I doubt that the movies would have even been "good" if they were a stand alone series instead of an adaption. The movies were edgy and inconsistent with each other. The sudden design changes in the second film caught me off guard. This is JUST the tip of the iceberg. I have an 11 page google doc of all the inaccurate scenes in these trashy film, plus just scenes that make no sense at all. What even led to the directors and writers taking this direction for the Percy Jackson series? Did they even read a fraction of the source material?(the answer is no.)

Which Percy Jackson adaptation is best? (tw opinions)
I am going to rate them all based on several things, casting, dialogue, entertainment value, how accurate it is to the source material (story, characterization of the characters, etc) and finally, does it capture the spirit and nostalgia of the og series.
The Movies
Tumblr media
Casting - By far the worst of the three. These are supposed to the 12 year olds? Why are they like 20?
Dialogue - Not the worst here. You can tell they were written by someone who understands how story’s play out on a screen vs a script.
Entertainment Value - Also not the worst here. These two movies are actually pretty fun and funny, if you can look past the inaccuracies.
How accurate is it to the source material? - This is what kills it. These two movies couldn’t be further if they tried. It actually upsets me how they butchered the story. WHY THE HELL DID THEY FIGHT CRONOS IN THE SEA OF MONSTERS?!? WHY EVEN CALL IT THAT IF YOU WERE JUST GONNA RUIN THE ENTIRE PLOTLINE OF THE FRANCHISE?!? As for the characters, where did Grover’s insecurities go? Where is Annabeth’s… literal entire personality? Ig they did Percy alright, could’ve been more angry (when it counts) and sarcastic.
Does it capture the spirit of the og series? - In the most minute way possible, kinda. It has some funny moments, some attempts at heart felt ones, kinda.
Final rating - A solid 4/10, actually entertaining, butchered the plot and most of the characters, kinda feels Percy Jackson ish.
The Musical
Tumblr media
Casting - This one is tricky. This, unlike the others, is a stage musical, so you cannot be too picky on the casting, nor can you easily cast children. However, this musical was written with the intention of being an age appropriate musical for youth theater programs, because of that I will say the casting is well done.
Dialogue - Again tricky but I’ll just interpret dialogue as the songs and well dialogue that happens in between. This has the best dialogue in the list, it’s goofy, funny, but also hits those emotional beats very well.
Entertainment Value - This one really depends on the person, because a lot of people don’t like musicals. For me personally, it’s fantastic. The music bops and the story is interesting.
How accurate is it to the source material? - Best on the list. Considering the options they have, as a stage musical, and what they were able to achieve, easily the best here. It has the monster battles, the pen, an actual sizable Bianca and Nico mention, best on the list. The characters are so well done, each of the og three having their own struggles and challenges that they overcome in the span of the play. Best on the list.
Does it capture the spirit of the og series? - 100% It’s funny. It’s heartfelt. It connects to the issues faced by neurodivergent kids, as well as kids who grew up missing a parent.
Final Rating - 8/10, entertaining, follows the books, only reason I give it an 8 is because a lot of people don’t like musicals.
The Show
Tumblr media
Casting - Best on the list. Actual preteens? They all act very well? Crazy. But yeah easily the best here, I mean that right there is Percy, Annabeth, and Grover, no argument. I will say however, this is unfortunately the only thing the show wins at here.
Dialogue - Listen, Rick, you’re a book writer. Not a script writer. And it painfully shows. It’s bland, there are a lot of useless lines (as in characters are often saying things rather than ever showing them). Not to even mention how horrendously rushed the entire thing is. I thought it would slow down as it went on, so the big story moments could have the time they deserved, but no. If I am being completely honest it makes the entire show feel cheap.
Entertainment Value - Worst on the list. It is actually boring. The fights they took out, the fact that you never see riptide transform, the whole thing just feels so so cheap.
How accurate is it to the source material? - It’s… weird? It is but with some changes I just don’t understand, it’s a lot like the dialogue, kinda small yet useless changes that I believe make the show suffer a bit. The characters are, kinda accurate? Why does Percy know so much? Grover is… off. Much like the movies, but in a different way. He doesn’t have most of his insecurities and honestly he doesn’t have much of a personality. Same with Annabeth. The both of them were never really given time to have one.
Does it capture the spirit of the og series? - Not really. The funny moments don’t land and the serious ones are too rushed. It never really felt like Percy Jackson.
Final Rating - 5/10, the only reason it’s 5 is because I feel like the internet would crucify me if I rated it the same as the movies.
Final Conclusion
Listen to the musical if you haven’t already! The movies aren’t good but are entertaining. The show is a disappointment. Before you come at me saying how Rick was there blah blah blah, I don’t care. Rick being there doesn’t make it good.

Greco-Roman Myth References in SpongeBob vs. The Original Myths
To clarify a lot of references that over the years of Greco-Roman Mythology media adaptations reference a lot from the Original Myths (Hercules, Lore Olympus, Percy Jackson, ect.), there are some references from the Original Stories that I’ve been noticing about in SpongeBob (including some of the ones that have their own version of the Sea God, Neptune/Poseidon). A Lot of People know very much about the Myths as I myself enjoy a lot of retellings (including in adaptations) of any certain story, but I myself am a fond of the idea of Greek/Roman Gods being depicted as Colorful God People (like in Destripando la Historia and in Overly Sarcastic Productions’ videos).
Let’s take a brief look at some of the refences that the show has referenced from the Myths with their own versions of the Greek/Roman Sea Deities (especially Neptune and Poseidon) (not including the First Film, even though Neptune is in it, the First Film is a major reference to the Odyssey which I will cover for someday).
King Eurystheus ordering his tasks for Heracles/Hercules’ 12 Labors vs. Neptune ordering a Challenge for SpongeBob in “Neptune’s Spatula” (His First Appearance in the Show).
Tumblr media
Poseidon/Neptune challenging Athena/Minerva in their own Contest for Athens vs. Neptune’s Challenge with SpongeBob in “Neptune’s Spatula”.
Tumblr media
Prometheus being punished by Zeus by being chained into a rock while having an Eagle trying to eat his liver vs. Neptune putting his Son, Triton, in a Cage for Punishment in “The Clash of Triton”.
Tumblr media
Poseidon/Neptune and his Wife, Amphitrite/Salacia in the Myths vs. The Show’s version of them (Neptune and Amphitrite).
Tumblr media
In their Original Backstory, Poseidon’s Brother, Zeus thought that his Brother would need a Wife so Nereus chose his Daughters (one of which, was Amphitrite) as Bride Picks for Poseidon. But when Poseidon seemed interest in Amphitrite, he chose her but Amphitrite was afraid of him so he ordered a Dolphin to go get his Future Bride as Amphitrite now accepts Poseidon and becomes his Queen of the Sea. Although in some Stories, Poseidon does cheat his Wife with Other Women much like his Brother, Zeus.
While it’s currently unknown in the show to how they met, they are in both good terms with each other as there is no cheating involved around with Neptune.
Triton’s Portrayal in the Myths vs. The Show’s version of him.
Tumblr media
Triton is Poseidon/Neptune and Amphitrite/Salacia’s Son, the Sea God Messenger of the Seas but in the Show, he portrayed as a Reckless Teenage Prince who has his revenge on his Father for locking him up in a Cage for all these years in “The Clash of Triton”.
Perseus fighting the Sea Monster of Poseidon/Neptune, Cetus while rescuing Andromeda vs. Neptune fighting against a Sea Monster in “Trident Trouble”
Tumblr media
Andromeda’s Mother mentioning that her Daughter is more Beautiful than the Nereids that pisses Poseidon/Neptune off vs. The Kraken Child telling his Mother that Neptune fought him in “Trident Trouble”.
Tumblr media
(Credit goes for Overly Sarcastic Productions for this Comparison since I couldn’t find an image that relates to this. The Original Source is found in one of their videos)
Athena/Minerva punishing Medusa by turning her into a Gorgon for having an affair with Poseidon/Neptune vs. Neptune punishing Old Man Jenkins by turning him into Crisp in “High Sea Diving”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perseus freeing Andromeda after slaying the Sea Monster vs. SpongeBob and Patrick freeing Triton from the Cage in “The Clash of Triton”.
Tumblr media
The Sea Monster, Cetus, that Poseidon/Neptune sent to attack Troy vs. Triton attacking the Bikini Bottom in “The Clash of Triton”.
Tumblr media
The Original Atlantis City vs. Poseidon and Neptune’s Kingdoms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zeus/Jupiter giving Hera/Juno Io (who he transformed her into a Cow) as a Gift for Hera for a Pet vs. Gary being kidnapped by Poseidon and used as a Gift for Skin Care in “Sponge on The Run”.
Tumblr media
Ixion trying to woo Hera/Juno vs. SpongeBob trying to take Gary from Poseidon in “Sponge on The Run”.
Tumblr media
Ixion receiving punishment from Zeus/Jupiter for trying to woo his Wife vs. SpongeBob and Patrick in court for trying to steal Gary from Poseidon in “Sponge on The Run”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hermes/Mercury letting Persephone/Proserpina reunite with her Mother, Demter/Ceres after Persephone/Proserpina stays with Hades/Pluto in the Underworld vs. Poseidon letting Gary reunite with SpongeBob after Gary stays with Poseidon in his Kingdom in “Sponge on The Run”.
Tumblr media
Overall, these are the Myth References that I’ve captured in both the Show and the Third Movie that has its two separate versions of Neptune and Poseidon. Not sure if the Writers of the Show were or weren’t trying to reference these parts of any of the original stories, but I just couldn’t help but notice any semblance that reminded Me of any of the Myths.

Productivity Challenge 2/100
Ok, I should have put this on the first post, but I've decided this challenge isn't going to be continuous. I will be taking days off when I need it. Dealing with chronic pain just doesn't allow me to be productive concerning my thesis everyday, and thats okay. Working when I can is better than nothing, and taking mental and physical breaks improves my work!
Today I'm working on Chapter 4, still adding line edits and adding some sources.
I might read a few articles, at least two.
As for non-school productivity, I'd like to do some laundry, read a chapter of my book, and sketch some :) I'm practicing watercolor again and really excited to grow my skills.
Oop I also have to do my PT exercises
I think some friends are coming into town this afternoon, so I'll have a chill night 🌙
Listening to: Athena by Sudan Archives
Drinking: Coffee with cinnamon roll creamer
Reading: Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan
Finished:
Read 2 articles

Fanfic No. 8: Title Unknown
Tumblr media
Type of Fic: Canon divergence, 2.2k words and 3 chapters, incomplete, took 10 months to write, rated K+, romance
“The Lightning Thief fanfic! PercyAnnabeth! Told in both POV's. Basically just about how Percy and Annabeth reunite. Has to do with Sea of Monsters. Rated to be safe.”
Characters: Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase
May 11, 2007 (published in August 2006 so this is the oldest surviving PJO fanfic on Fanfiction.net)
Length: Each chapter was very short and held minimal details so the pacing felt a bit fast.
Formatting and Content: The plot moved a bit fast and was very bare bones, focused on the social lives of Percy and Annabeth at camp halfblood rather than the war plot going on in the books so it was a fun break. The fic was short so the formatting was good and able to avoid the dreaded block of text.
Characterization: Characters were a bit OOC, some characterizations are inaccurate because at the time of publishing information on that aspect of the character was not released (Annabeth’s stepsiblings) but the characters were still enjoyable.
Reception: There are 92 reviews that are mostly positive and praising this being the oldest surviving fic. There are also 33 favorites and 36 follows.
Author: Author Drama Class Heroes on their account gives status updates on their stories and provides their opinions on certain ships, their favorite quotes, and shows support for their favorite fandoms. There is a small amount of copypasta as well. In the ANs of the fic they ask for reviews and input. In the final chapter they voice their thoughts during the fic in ANs that take the reader out of the fic momentarily. Account has been inactive since 2009 so we can only wish them the best.
Impact: This was a light but cute fic, you can see the author is young but enjoys the source material!
Confused? Read our fanfiction rules and criteria here!
