“A shark?! What kinda shark are ya, ya don’t happen to have any stripes on your back or somethin’ of that sort?!” —@fanciful-lobster
@fanciful-lobster
Shark looked at over Lobster, the blue cookie about to enter the ocean before his attention was grabbed by the orange cookie. Quietly the berserker stepped away from the shore and walked over to Lobster.
“…No… I do not….” He answers sternly, looking Lobster up and down before guesting towards himself.
“… Great White…. Not Tiger…”

Not asking for advice but I thought you'd find this story amusing <:) When I brought home Mocha Ray Cookie and Lobster Cookie I had given them scheduled swimming time through out the day (They were a split second rescuse since I found Mocha Ray stuck in some plastic near a river) until their larger tank arrived. Well, they figured out how to turn on the faucet themselves and promptly proceeded to overflow it while I slept :,D I had woken up to Lilac tugging on me to point me to this
-Yogurt Anon
OH NOOOO AHAHAHA-
Lucky a singular sink faucet itself can't make a whole house flood overnight. Probably. I'm not willing to test that theory-

Yandere Lobster Cookie x reader please?
Perhaps it would be a tad bit too late to think about how you got yourself into this situation, chained up in what appeared to be a cell but was certainly no where near the bright temple you had seen before. The floor was covered in a white carpet and the walls were a dark blue. There was a bed covered in pillows that the chains thankfully allowed you to get to, yet you refused to move. You couldn't help your thoughts from wandering to anything you could have done to avoid this fate.
It started clearly with your meeting. Lobster was extremely stand-offish with you. Wouldn’t talk to you, wouldn’t look at you, nothing. Despite this though, you always felt as if they were watching you and caught them staring one time with their fish hovering over their shoulder with what could only be described best as the harshest glare a fish could give.
It was only a few days after that Lobster singled you out and introduced themself, getting into your personal space and practically forcing a conversation to stay a constant between the two of you. You dismissed the strangeness of the event by reminding yourself of the fact Lobster had simply just hadn’t talk to many people in a while and perhaps their social skills had deteriorated. It would be perfectly reasonable of course.
If only there was a reward for seeing the best in everyone no matter the circumstances, even going against your better judgement. For a few weeks, Lobster would continuously seek and single you out amongst your friends to simply chat and you didn't think much of it. You couldn't bring yourself to turn them down, perhaps subconsciously it was those survival instincts you were intent on ignoring working their magic.
The first sign should be the fact your friends seemed strange around Lobster. Closed off, tense, unapproving. In private they mentioned how the aquatic cookie freaked them out and made them uncomfortable but you simply dismissed it. Eventually though, your friends started to hang around you less as Lobster begun appearing more. The group firmly split from you when the news of one of your friends going missing arose, even when you tried to seek support from them and in turn offer your own. Of course, this meant you were leaning heavily on Lobster for support during this time. Perhaps it should’ve made its way through your head at this point as they always seemed to appear when you needed them, without even needing to speak their name or to send any words to them prior. As if they were always close to you, but in your emotional state you swept it all under the rug and were just thankful to the constant support they offered you. That was why, in retrospect, when Lobster asked you to begin dating them you jumped at the opportunity.
It was smooth sailing for a while, any odd circumstance was chalked up to Lobster just being a tad protective over you because you were still emotionally compromised from the disappearance of your friend. You had to be, of course. They said that was the reason, even though you felt fine most days despite the grief still being settled in your chest firmly. You brushed it off with the assumption that you were clearly repressing it.
"Y/N?" Lobster called with a faint smile, coming up to you so that they could wall you home.
"Lobster!" You grinned brightly, hugging them tightly as well.
They didn't hug back, tensing. Looking back on the memory it was probably out of worry for feeling any weapons they had on their persons at the time.
"I have… something to ask." Lobster hummed, peeling you off of them.
"Oh?" You frown slightly, worry clawing at your gut. If only you knew then what you knew now. "What is it?"
"Would you move in with me?"
Your frown deepened as your eyebrows furrowed together. It would be convenient, though you did enjoy having space to yourself. The silence seemed to clue Lobster in on what was going on in your head as they scrunched up their face.
"Never mind."
"Huh?"
"I said never mind." The tone they used was much harsher than you were ever used to hearing from them.
"O-okay."
The topic was promptly dropped and in the resulting silence Lobster walked off. You couldn't shake the feeling you did something wrong. It ate away at you even hours after it happened, laying in your bed awake even once the sky darkened over. Perhaps you were really in the wrong, and it was bad of you to turn them down. They wanted what was best for you, and they made that clear time after time. Their harsh judgement of your friends made you realize your friends didn’t support your relationship with them and didn’t support you, and gave you the courage to stop associating with them. Their judgements on how you dressed and behaved in public also allowed you to go about your day drawing less attention to yourself, which you were thankful for. You didn’t understand why then, why you felt bad. Why you felt horrible whenever you went out, whenever you saw your prior friends in public and couldn’t bring yourself to talk to them.
There was a creak downstairs, but you tried your best to pay it no mind. There was another a few moments later and you blamed it all on your house being old. It was only when your door opened did you dart up out of bed only to come face to face with Lobster.
“You’re coming with me. This house isn’t fit for you.”
“Why are you in my house?”
“Y/N,” Lobster took a step closer and on instinct you backed away. “I need to know where you are. If you’re in this house anyone could come in. I can’t have that for you. I want the best for you.”
“Lobster-”
“You won’t deny me the right!”
Then the world went black.

The Offer
Oh look, I typed out The Offer. The entire thing is under the cut!
Word Count: 2187
The noise of gears turning and steam shooting was all Croissant Cookie could hear as she hefted a box full of parts, moving it to her desk to sort through them for later use.  As all she could hear was the noise of parts working above, she didn’t notice Timekeeper floating on their Sonic Embroider a few feet behind, watching.  ‘Something on your mind, Croissant?’  Croissant jolted and whipped her head around, wide eyes relaxing slightly when she saw that it was only the unpredictable Timekeeper Cookie. Had they been there long?  ‘When did you get in here?’ Croissant questioned, though her voice lacked the shock she wanted to convey.  Timekeeper waved a hand dismissively, ‘That’s not important,’ they said as they leaned forward, ‘What’s important is that you didn’t answer my question.’  Croissant was aware that there was a possibility that Timekeeper could pry, but she was tired, and she felt that if she put any energy into thinking of an excuse, she would short circuit like a robot. So she turned away as she said to Timekeeper, ‘It’s nothing.’  But Timekeeper knew Croissant better than to believe her, and at the moment, they weren’t quite content to let a “nothing” be nothing.  ‘Are you sure?’ they asked Croissant, grinning to themself, ‘It doesn’t seem to be nothing. You’ve been lacking in your abilities as of late; slouching more, staying up more, and you haven’t been talking as much lately.’ They could almost chuckle when they saw their alternate past self tense up. ‘Dare I say,’ they muttered, ‘you’ve been following a routine.’  Croissant stayed quiet, unsure of what to say. She could think of an excuse, but would that get Timekeeper off her back? Most likely not.  With a defeated sigh, Croissant stepped into hot water and confessed. ‘Alright, alright… Fine…’ she said, not turning to look at Timekeeper in the eye, ‘I fought a bit last week is all.’  Now Timekeeper was intrigued.  ‘I see,’ they muttered, covering their grin with a hand, though Croissant knew that they were grinning. ‘It must not have been very pleasant.’  ‘No, it wasn’t.’ Croissant hissed. She tried to go on with her work and sort through the box of parts she had carried over earlier, but Timekeeper had other plans.  They hummed in thought, and with their grin lingering, they ask ‘It couldn’t have been the muffled screaming I heard from the ground floor, could it?’  Croissant almost gasped.  Timekeeper had heard the argument? Who else had heard?  A thousand questions ran through Croissant’s panicked mind, but all she asked was, ‘How… How much did you hear...?’  She could feel Timekeeper’s sick satisfaction with themself.  ‘Oh, don’t you worry,’ they replied, ‘I could not make out any words… much.’  A slow growing dread started to crawl up Croissant’s spine as Timekeeper continued, ‘Although, I did recognize another voice among the screaming… And if I remember correctly…’ Timekeeper tilted their head, ‘I saw that Lobster Cookie of yours leave a couple of minutes after the screaming stopped.’  “Of yours...” Croissant could almost laugh, but she didn’t have the humour to do so.  ‘Could your fight have been with them?’  Croissant struggled to keep her voice under control, refusing to show weakness to Timekeeper of all Cookies, but when she spoke, her voice shook enough to be obvious. ‘Y-yeah… What… What of it?’  Timekeeper tilted their head back upright, seemingly unaware of how heavy the subject was for the engineer. ‘Ah, how sad.’ they simply said, ‘I always thought that you two were a nice pair.’  The words weighed on Croissant’s heart. She and Lobster… They had been a nice pair… hadn’t they? ‘Yeah…’ she muttered, almost to herself, ‘I thought so too…’  Croissant wasn’t aware of the mistake she had made saying that, as she was unable to think straight with a foggy head, and as she was unable to see Timekeeper’s eye light up with an idea.  Suddenly, Timekeeper appeared and swung upside down in front of Croissant, causing her to jump and take a step or two back.  ‘Well you’re in luck!’ Timekeeper exclaimed happily, their signature comical V-like smile plastered on their face, ‘Because I have an offer for you!’  Blinking once, then twice, Croissant calmed herself. ‘An offer?’  ‘Mm-hmm.’ Timekeeper hummed. ‘You obviously care a lot about that Lobster Cookie, and you very obviously care about the relationship you two… had. You were very close, were you not?’  Croissant didn’t like where Timekeeper was going with the conversation, but she asked anyway. ‘Wh-what… What are yo-you getting at…?’  Timekeeper sat upright on their Sonic Embroider and turned to look at Croissant, still grinning. ‘I bet you would like to have that relationship with them again, wouldn’t you?  ‘I could help you with that. I could change time so that you two would never have fought. ...In fact, I could change time so that you two would never fight, ever!  Wouldn’t you like that? You two would both live happily ever after.’  Croissant’s throat was suddenly dry. Was Timekeeper serious? They couldn’t possibly be… Tampering with time? But she had thought… after the incident with Gingerbrave and his friends…  ‘I……’  ‘You wouldn’t know about it, I promise.’ Timekeeper leaned towards Croissant, grin growing wider. ‘Come on now…’ they whispered, ‘don’t you want a perfect relationship with them? And all you have to do, is say the word.’  Croissant stared past Timekeeper. A perfect relationship… A relationship where she and Lobster never scream at each other… where they never split off and remain bitter towards each other… How wonderful that would be, to never fight, to never have to feel angry at each other…  A perfect relationship was all Croissant had hoped for. Could she really accept the offer and have that?  She opened and closed her mouth, feeling as if her throat was still too dry to speak.  She wanted to accept the offer, she really did. The words were resting right on top of her tongue.  But she couldn’t.  Croissant could feel one part of her screaming at her to take the offer. It was right there! It would be so easy to say yes! But another part of her was screaming louder.  She remembered making a deal with Timekeeper way back then, when she was unable to change their past. She had made a deal to work with Timekeeper to become stronger, to make sure there was always something to look forward to.  She had made the deal mainly because she didn’t want to become another Timekeeper, another erratic time god that could and would change events to their own liking whenever they got bored. She didn’t want to throw away her morality, she didn’t want to throw away her humanity.  Besides, hadn’t she told Lobster?  Hadn’t she told them that she wasn’t going to play with time? Hadn’t she told them that she couldn’t imagine doing what Timekeeper did? Hadn’t she wanted to stop another incident like Gingerbrave’s from happening?  The rifts that would grow from the change… they would keep appearing no matter what Croissant did, unless she became like Timekeeper…  They said that she wouldn’t know about the change, but she knew it was a lie. One way or another, she’ll know. Be it from the ever-forming rifts that will appear, be it from Timekeeper themself… be it from the “perfect” relationship.  It won’t really be perfect, would it? She and Lobster had different opinions, and that had eventually led to their fall out. But if they were to never fight, they would never grow, they would never learn.  And Croissant knew that she wasn’t entirely right in that argument.  Inhaling deeply, Croissant let out a soft sigh, then smiled at Timekeeper and said, ‘That sounds great… But I’m good.’  Timekeeper tilted their head, their smile fading a bit. ‘Really?’  ‘Yeah… It’s a nice offer, but I think I’ll pass.’  ‘Hmm… But you seem hesitant, Croissant.’  Croissant reached for her pouch with one hand and her goggles with the other, she backed away from Timekeeper with her best non-nervous smile and procured a pair of Timeweaver Scissors from her pouch. ‘You know,’ she blurted, ‘I think I left my tools at home, I- I’ll be right back!’  Quickly, Croissant slid her goggles over her eyes and cut a time rift large enough for her to squeeze through as Timekeeper spoke, ‘Oh, alright then.’  As Croissant stepped through the rift and into the timeless space, she heard Timekeeper say after her as the rift closed, ‘The offer is always open if you change your mind!’  Then nothing.  Croissant took a moment to listen to the silence of the rift. Gears spun and pistons moved, but not a sound was to be heard. Standing on a giant gear, Croissant slowly breathed in and breathed out, recollecting her nerves.  Stupid… Croissant thought to herself, You’re the best engineer in the TBD, you saved a child and his friends from getting arrested for something they didn’t do… And you crumble from a few shouts. Stupid.  With a deep sigh, Croissant created another time rift. Although she had lied about leaving her tools at home, there was something she needed from her house anyways.  She hopped out of the rift and landed in her room.  Pushing her goggles back up above her eyes, Croissant looked around her room and landed her eyes on her desk. Sitting there was her spanner, something that she usually kept with her as a sort of comfort item. She must have forgotten it when rushing to work earlier in the morning.  Croissant went over and grabbed the spanner. She was about to cut another time rift open when she saw something red on her bed, she looked over to see that it was a slightly faded octopus plush. Her plush.  She kept the Timeweaver Scissors and walked over to her bed, picking up the plush when she was close enough. She stared at it and remembered, Lobster had given her this plush.
‘Croissant.’  When she turned around, she was met with a red octopus plush. When she looked past it, she saw Lobster looking at her with a little smile.  Croissant chuckled as she turned on her chair to fully face Lobster, ‘Lobster, what is this?’ she asked them, looking at the plush with curiosity. She was somewhat forced to grab it when Lobster dropped it onto her lap.  ‘It’s a plush,’ Lobster told her, ‘I noticed that you sometimes grow anxious, I didn’t notice at first, but then I realized why you always curl up by my side at random moments.’  Croissant’s face flushed a bit and her eyes travelled down to the plush in her hands. ‘Really?’  Lobster nodded, ‘Yes. Now, I know I cannot always be with you, I have the Tower of Frozen Waves to guard after all.’ they said. They then knelt in front of her and held her wrists in their claws, so gentle and careful that Croissant would have thought they weren’t touching her at all if she hadn’t been looking at them.  ‘That’s what this plush is for,’ Lobster continued, ‘if you ever feel anxious, or if you feel an attack coming, this will help you. Hug it, squeeze it, throw it across the room for all I care. Anything that makes you feel better.’  Croissant smiled as she looked at the plush in her hands, ‘Alright, I’ll keep that in mind.’ she said. She then leaned forward and gave Lobster a brief kiss, whispering to them, ‘Thank you.’
Croissant gripped the plush tightly, feeling anger boil within her.  She had loved Lobster so much, she had thought that they were the one. They had been so caring, so nice, so understanding… And they threw what they had away for some stupid city.  Croissant drew her arm back and aimed at the window. She could throw the plush out and be rid of their memory, of their selfishness.  But she hadn’t quite been completely right in their argument, had she?  She could recall the times she spent with Lobster, listening to their stories of Sugarteara. They had been so passionate about their role as a Guardian of their city, so proud of what their city used to be. Croissant could see their face as they spoke.  Croissant lowered her arm. Mocha Ray had once come to her and told her about Lobster’s connection to their city. They had sunk into the sea and drowned, but it was because of the city’s Sacred Pearl that they were able to have a second chance. Lobster always had a deep connection with the city.  ‘So if you come to the topic of the city,’ Mocha Ray had said, ‘please, be careful.’  And she wasn’t.  Carefully, Croissant set down her plush back onto her bed. ‘I’m sorry…’ she muttered, though she knew no one would hear.  With another deep sigh, Croissant slipped her goggles over her eyes and procured her Timeweaver Scissors. Opening a time rift, Croissant looked back at the plush one last time, then stepped through the rift to return to the TBD’s building.

February 14th 2021
This weekend was a disaster. Ate too much. Drank waaaaaaay too much.
But I did it all with my love.
Our bank statement shows nothing but food purchases.
Chinese Takeout every Friday — which isn’t the worst thing, I just need to stop making it an excuse to also buy cookies and soda.
Famous Daves x2 — once for the hell of it, once for the super bowl
House of Cheesesteaks — grandads birthday (had a cupcake too)
Cold Stone — My birthday
Pizza Hut — My birthday
Red Lobster — yesterday’s meal + half a tub of cookies each + a bottle of wine, three beers, and 1/2 a bottle of honey wine each. Fuggin’ yikes.
Buffalo Wild Wings — got that today.
Ordered 15 wings each, split the fries, and each ate half of a wrap with a little bit of chips and salsa.
I haven’t had water in two days.
Why is food our love language???
We stopped going to McDonalds every weekend but traded it in for buying much more expensive foods.
I have to start cooking on the weekends. It can’t be that bad. Mom is up there....waiting to talk....which is a blessing....like it’s Mom but I like to vibe out in the kitchen, listen to some music, idk....I need to just get over not cooking on the weekends. OR cook Friday and eat the leftovers Saturday and Sunday.
I’m declaring my intentions to make Brunswick stew next weekend. Anything to stop us from gorging like maniacs.
I won’t be eating tomorrow. Not as punishment but because I really don’t need to. I’ve consumed more than enough calories these past three days. I doubt I’ll even be hungry. Water and Black Coffee it is.

COLONIAL AMERICA WHERE: City Tavern Restaurant (138 S 2nd St, Philadelphia, PA 19106) *has since permanently closed* When I very excitedly told my less enlightened ethnocentric ex-fiancé about my plan to eat a different food from every country in the world, he complained and asked me why I didn't start with America first. So I told him, "Well... that's not the point of this experience. I want to adventure to new places, see what else is out there and--" "I know, I know," he sounded like he was rolling his eyes at me over the phone. "I just don't know why you didn't put America first." I was a little caught off guard by how close-minded he was being, but the more I thought of it I came to the conclusion that I HAD put America first. For the first 35 years of my life, I had been eating hamburgers, hot dogs, chocolate chip cookies, apple pie, mac and cheese, fried chicken, banana splits, clam chowder, ect for nearly four decades! I have done the American leg of this tour to tastebud death.
I mean... that was part of the problem. I was bored of eating the same old thing for the rest of my life. Hamburgers are delicious, but just how many of them can you eat before you want MORE... before you want to try Senegalese thieboudienne, Korean kimbap, Mongolian buuz, West African domoda, Peruvian ceviche, Spanish tapas? The world does not come in one flavor-- nor should it ever! Also, the more I thought of it, I had also done a very colonial American restaurant. City Tavern was one of my favorite cosplaying finds when I was living in Philadelphia one spring, so much so that I literally took my fiance there when we were together. FFS, this man can't remember anything! We did colonial American. He was sitting right there for the damn meal! But I digress... I don't remember what we ate that night, but the bread in that place was amazing. The menu offers things like cornmeal fried oysters, New England corn chowder, seafood melange, turkey pot pie, veal, venison, braised rabbit, apple-wood smoked pork chop (I think that's what I got actually), lobster pie, ect. Some of these recipes came from Thomas Jefferson's own cookbook (though he definitely was not the one who wrote it going by history). But that bread, wow... it just melts, just melts in your mouth so well... The tavern itself was built in 1772 to be "a large and commodious tavern" worthy of the largest and most prosperous city in all the colonies, Philadelphia. For over two hundred years it continued to operate, still keeping the old decor and colonial garb, until the pandemic hit the city hard and even hundreds of years of history could not compete with covid-19. When I heard about that, my heart just about broke. No more time traveling restaurant... There is a colonial American restaurant in Charlottesville, Virginia by the name of Michie Tavern, but my first love will still be City Tavern Restaurant of Philadelphia. PS. My ex is dumb.

Barhop
March, 2020. Toronto
“Why are you here?” Cam pressed as he looked fervently into my eyes. I felt the warmth of the beer haze wash over me but held steady to concentrate on my answer. I paused.
“I’m here because I want to know why we could not have talked earlier.”
~
Christmas, 2017. Vancouver.
I pulled up to the party, happy to see some familiar faces. I did not have a party-sized purse because quite frankly, I was the type of person who would probably be the responsible mom in the back, drinking her drinks, hanging by the bar, dancing here and there, but remaining relatively sober to take care of everyone else. But if I knew the friends I was with tonight, I would know very well that I would probably be peer-pressured into drinking more than what I would want. Not because of bullying or peer-pressure, but because I’d be having too much fun and let the night slip away from my never-ending control.
“Hey! Sarah you’re here!” said Elsa, who was already red-faced and handed me her shot.
“Good god, what is this” I said as I sniffed the drink, made a face, and then took a deep breath before downing the shot so I could finally take my coat off.
Cam whirled around his apartment proudly and showed me around. The kitchen filled with beer paraphernalia that came with the territory of working in a beer sales job, his room, with an incomplete bed, but made complete with a banana costume in the corner... because you could always use a lobster costume at one point or another.
It felt like old times, like a New Years but not. All the cousins, and me, the other family-friend who was considered family, banded together for a pub crawl to just celebrate each other, debauchery and the fact that our parents left the alcohol out for us way too early on.
I caught up with everyone to ensure that I did my rounds, quietly tried to pass off drinks to others by stating I had brought nothing with me and did not want to mooch (which was then followed by other drinks and sips to ensure I was not thirsty) and then it was off to the first bar.
As we quickly walked in the damp Vancouver wetness, I struck up a conversation with Bee, one of the cousins who was a year older than me, and her life. Bee told me that she had concluded that she was polyamorous, and was seeing multiple people. She described that she was happy with her boyfriends and they all knew each other, and they all gave her something that she needed. it was oddly liberal but almost expected from a group of first and second-generation Asian youths. I applauded her for being so true to herself, but knew that I, a sheer monogamist, could not fathom letting my partner be with another out of pure jealousy.
Before I could even ponder or ask further about the polyamorousness of her life, we arrived at the first bar where Cam proceeded to strike up a conversation with the bouncer. As luck would have it, he mentioned he was the beer supplier and we were all let in.
“A round for everyone,” Cam announced as we all settled in and started to pull up stools and tables to accommodate our giant crew. The waitress pulled up and Cam effortlessly struck up a conversation with her about how here evening was going and requested a pint. That was always something that seemed to impress me; as someone who was always on the go, and who was actually quite shy, I tried not to ever do small talk and never really cared to. But whenever Cam did, it was never really that small, it was a genuine question to make someone feel good, or at least feel accepted. Despite his bad habits and constant jeering at the people closest to him, he was kindest to those he did not know.
Jules proceeded to buy the next round. He was the hipster before hipster was really a thing, loved photography and streetwear, and although seemed to appear cooky and scrawny, he matched the Vancouver hot hipster-boy vibe. And that was complemented by his hipster girlfriend Rhianne who also loved photography, art and Aritizia clothing.
I sat quietly and observed Jules and Cam proceed to fight over the bill like two Asian dads as the waitress mentioned we could not split the tab. Whomever paid we would just owe money anyways, but it was the principal that was important. No matter how many sips I took, the beer just simply would not seem to disappear fast enough, and before I knew it, we were onto our next bar.
It seemed nostalgic to be back. The memories, the baggage, all of it that was here with me. Nothing ever happened in Vancouver when I came back, and to me, home was the antithesis of adventure. But there I was, walking quickly to the next bar with my childhood friends in the middle of the night like what we had always wanted. But in the back of my mind there was something that I’d always wanted too that was deep in the vault of my brain - the thought of Cam.
New Years’ ago, we would always have a moment together. He’d be back from Toronto and I’d be at the party as the family friend and we’d just talk... catch up... each year we’d see each other grow, I’d hear about who he was seeing and he would inquire about me. But there was an understanding of continuous support. And then when he started dating Lisa, it seemed like that was it for him and he’d be with her... that was until they broke up.
I can’t even remember the next bar. I think it was an Irish pub, or maybe we could not even get in so we skipped straight to the bar. Either way, I was excited because I was finally going to Fortune, the hip hop and R&B club that everyone had always recommended to me.
Dance with him my mind screamed. He was twirling Elsa and dipping Bee, mosh pitting with Jules and I stood in the back as I always expected I would... with my non-party bag, toying with my cranberry vodka. I couldn’t, it would be too much time that had caught up to us and I didn’t want to blow it all with one seedy night in front of all our friends... and his family. But I could not let it go, him go, once more after seeing him with others. I danced.
The bass was as heavy as my body. I swayed and tried to move past, but Cam’s hand caught mine as I realized that it was indeed me who had started grinding on him. Okay, I guess he just wants to dance too I mused. Like a school dance where everyone grinds on everyone, and then you go back to being normal the next day, perhaps it was like that. Nothing, because that was always how it was.
Somehow, Jules, Rhianne, Bee and Elsa all disappeared. As the music continued, the crowd rushed in and we were lost in a sea of people. An unexpected moment alone sparked my fear, but the drunken hum of the beat and my own curiosity made me want to stay.
Cam grabbed my hand and twirled me, then led me to the side of the dance floor where there were stools and a ledge. Expertly and effortlessly, he pulled me in with both hands on my arms and smirked.
“Do you want me to hold your bag for you, or put it to coat check mom?” He teased. We both knew I was not prepared, that I expected to be home after the pre-drink and that I’d see him the next day for a movie with our dads. It was a mom bag, that I embarrassingly toted around that night, but it almost expertly got in the way when I needed to most.
“No, it’s okay, I still manage to dance just fine with it... and I don’t want to get my stuff stolen” I shyly said. When did I ever care if he thought I looked cool? Apparently in this moment, which unfortunately was unraveling things that I was not expecting.
He held me like he had never held me before. His hands on my waist, he pulled me in and kissed my cheek, pulled away and smiled again with his cheeky smirk and a dash of longing. I looked back at him, curious and taken aback. I had heard all his stories, laughed at all the girls he had tried to pull in with the same dirty tricks, even encouraged him when he was with Lisa to be earnest and true to her. But somehow, I had leapt out of the friendzone into a territory I knew nothing about.
“Cam,” I started, and then his lips were on mine. We can’t do this, I’m not ready, why have we never talked about this, and where did this come from? You never liked me, it was always Lisa, or other girls who were different than me, I was always the rock, the one who gave advice... the one in the safezone.
I pulled away and stared back in shock. He pulled me back, forehead to forehead, nose to nose and I rested there. The smell of his cologne and the beer we had been drinking hit me.
“What are we doing?” I yelled. It seemed impossible to have a quiet moment, but that was where we were in this club, and the world seemed to stop for a minute so we could sort this out. I wanted to be close to him, to know him, to acknowledge what we had been feeling for a decade or more.
He took a breath but did not pull back. He did not answer me, but went in for another kiss, and I dodged and his lips met my cheek.
“Cam, please. I... I want to but... your family, my friends, this is all so sudden.”
Cam’s brow furrowed and he looked at me puzzled. “You can’t be serious. Sudden?”
“Yes, sudden. You were just with Lisa like... a year ago, but that was for a long time. And I know you’ve been seeing other girls, I just...” I trailed off. Don’t want to be caught in your hurricane of bounce backs and adventures. I want to be the one because that’s what it has been all along for me.
“You just ‘what’, Sarah... you started dancing with me.”
I stood back stunned. I never meant any harm or mischief, but I also did not know if he thought of me in that way. I was always the other, the one who never seemed to get onto that side of him. But I also knew what he was capable of.
“Can we just talk about this for a second?” I yelled earnestly.
“What’s there to talk about?” he yelled, looking impatient.
~
March 2020, Toronto
“That... that is what I wanted to talk about. That is why I’m here.” I stated as-a-matter-of-factly, “Three years ago we were at a bar and I felt something. And you felt it too and I just messed it up by asking too many questions and you walked away. Why didn’t you want to talk to me? Why did you make me feel like I ruined a moment instead of telling me you’d be there and everything would be alright?”
“Because I didn’t!” Cam tensely said. “Look, I’m sorry I made you walk away, but the fact you made me feel like I was just trying to pounce on you because you were some available meat that night was just really shitty.”
“I didn’t want to. But I had no idea how you felt. And it didn’t really help when you just ghosted me for a year last year, after we slept together and had a moment. I didn’t want it to be anything more and clearly you didn’t either but why didn’t you just tell me how you felt?” I cried.
“I knew I should have reached out earlier...” Cam trailed off.

Solntse
part x
Remus wakes the next morning to the bed dipping as Sirius sits on it and bends to tie his shoes. Remus’ eyes blink open to the sight of his white button down, summer-thin, stretching across the muscles of his back as they shift with the movement of his hands.
And Remus will admit. It takes him a moment to remember. And when he does, the split second of sorrow he felt is intensified and then washed away by the equally strong wave of warm elation that replaces it. He feels so giddy his chest hurts as he reaches out to run his palm down Sirius’ back.
Sirius turns around with a little gasp, and then he’s rambling before Remus can even open his mouth. He makes a sad little noise, full lip poking out in what can only be called a pout, and turns until he can half lay on the bed, reaching to wrap Remus, still sleep warm, in his arms. “I’m know, I’m know, not want to leave, baby. Have breakfast. Stupid breakfast with stupid work people. They not know I’m have hot boyfriend in bed, so stupid they make me go.” He presses a long kiss to Remus’ lips, licking hotly into his mouth, but starts talking again almost instantly, “I’m think maybe wake up early, but look so cute sleep, Remus. All warm, so hard wake up but want kisses, too—“
“Hey, hey.” Remus presses his thumb to Sirius’ bottom lip, then replaces it with a kiss of his own, “It’s okay, love.” He really wishes Sirius didn’t have to go, but his fantasies from the plane are at the back of his mind, too. He runs his fingers down the collar of Sirius’ shirt, imagining what it’ll be like to peel it off of him. “I’ll be here when you get back.” And he lets go, sprawling his bare body against the white sheets in what he hopes is at least somewhat hot, “For kisses and…whatever you want.”
Sirius looks at him for a long moment, lips parted. Then he throws his hands up and rises from the bed, “Now I’m hard while try to talk to people and eat egg. All your fault, Remus.”
Remus laughs and bites his lip as he watches Sirius work to adjust himself in his pants. It’s not like he’s easy to hide. Remus is mid-stretch when Sirius’ voice makes him open his eyes again.
“Hey.” He’s got their room key and his sunglasses in one hand. His shirt is rolled up to his forearms and his hair is still a little sleep-mussed. Remus wants to die a little when Sirius smiles at him. “Love you.”
Remus lets his head fall back against the mound of pillows, “Love you.”
~
He orders himself breakfast while Sirius is away at his. Just some yogurt and granola. He figures Sirius will probably be doing more talking than eating, and he wants to be able to enjoy a large lunch with him later. Maybe on the beach. There’s a part of him that still never wants to leave the hotel room until they’ve made up for all their lost time and he feels thoroughly fucked, but…they’re here. They should enjoy it.
What he doesn’t expect, is to fall asleep in one of the shady chairs next to their small pool out front, but when he wakes up to warm fingers through his hair, he smiles even before his eyes are open.
“Hi, sleepy.” Sirius leans down to brush his lips over Remus’ cheek, then presses a slower one to his mouth. “Miss me so much you nap?”
Remus laughs, but looking at how the sun is haloing Sirius’ dark hair just then, something sizes in his chest and he can’t imagine how he let him go so easily this morning. He makes a little noise and pulls his knees into his chest so he can reorient them around Sirius’ waist, “Did you have a good breakfast?”
Sirius hums as he pulls Remus the rest of the way. He rucks Remus’ shirt up to rub gently at the base of his spine, “Boring. Talk a lot, be hungry soon.” He sighs and bites gently at Remus’ jaw—maybe just because he can, “You eat?”
“Just a little. I figured you wouldn’t get to have much. We can go to the restaurant soon.” Even before he finishes the sentence, Sirius is grumbling. Remus laughs, “And then go to the beach later, with all those people around. Then maybe we’ll go to the bar before dinner—“
“Killing me, Remus, oh my god.”
Remus presses his smile into Sirius’ neck and plays his fingers through the short hairs at the back of his neck. He leans back for a short kiss, “What, you don’t want to eat lunch with me?”
“Eat you for lunch.” Sirius grumbles, and then, for the third time, Remus finds himself lifted into Sirius’ arms.
Remus laughs, “Okay, I am actually hungry though.” He kisses a little burst across Sirius’ sunned nose.
Sirius laughs, “Always hungry.” He plops Remus down on the bed and braces his forearms on either side of his head. His neckless falls from beneath his shirt, pooling at Remus’ throat, and Remus reaches up to feel the tight stretch of his button down over his back. “I’m take care. What you want for lunch, карамель?”
Remus presses his lips together, thinking.
Sirius raises an eyebrow.
Remus moves his hands to the front of Sirius’ shirt and slowly starts working the buttons until the shirt is hanging open, “Lobster roll.”
Sirius grins and brings his knees up onto the bed on either side of Remus’ hips. Once seated on Remus’ lap, he pushes the material from his own shoulders, letting it pool around his hips and onto the bed, “I’m know that not all.”
Remus bites his lip, letting his eyes wander, “Plantain chips, maybe.”
Sirius smiles, “You tell me everything you want, always.” Then he leans down, all warm skin and bruising kisses, and mumbles against Remus’ mouth, “I’m do for you, anything.”
Remus looks up at him, at his heat-curled hair and light eyes. He feels the familiar tightness in his chest that occurs when he really just…can’t believe. He smiles a small, disbelieving smile, and reaches up to trail his knuckles across Sirius’ cheek. “You’re pretty phenomenal, you know that?”
Sirius smiles back, but his eyebrows draw together a little, “That word scare me.”
That startles a laugh out of Remus, and he pulls Sirius down and just—hugs him. As tight as he can. Sirius sinks into it, and Remus likes how he can feel his chest expand and contract against his body as he breathes. It’s comforting, to have something he loves this much this close.
Sirius yawns warm against Remus’ neck, and Remus cards his fingers through his hair, “You got up pretty early, love. Why don’t we just relax here. I can get us lunch in a bit, yeah?”
Sirius hums, pressing what already feels like a sleepy kiss to Remus’ neck, “Is good, yes.”
Remus glances down, “Here.” Despite Sirius’ noises of protests, he manages to untangle himself long enough to work on Sirius’ belt and jeans, pulling them off, “Socks on or off?”
“Off. Hot.”
Remus balls them up and throws them near their suitcases. He sort of loves how knobby Sirius’ ankles are, and runs a quick thumb over the closest one before climbing back towards the head of the bed, where Sirius is pulling back the covers for them. He will admit though, Sirius shuffling around their hotel room in socks back in London was one of his favorite things. He can’t wait to see it in New York.
~
When they wake up again the sun is only just starting to lower and Remus’ back is a little sweaty where its pressed to Sirius’ chest. Sirius has him completely drawn in. His hand is splayed against Remus’ chest, like he’s pushing them closer together even in his sleep. Remus tries to stay as still as he can while simultaneously kicking as much of the sheets away from his body as possible. He freezes when Sirius makes a sleepy noise.
“What time?” His voice cracks and Remus melts.
“Looks like we only slept for a few hours.” He cranes his neck to look at the digital clock on the bedside table, “2:30.” He places his palm over the back of Sirius’ where its resting against his stomach, “Do you want to go swimming?”
Remus can feel Sirius’ smile against the back of his neck, “Naked?”
Remus laughs, “I’m pretty sure we have to wear a swimsuit.”
“I’m pay them most money,” Sirius’ smile has turned into kisses, “We do what we want.”
“That’s definitely not how nudity works.” Remus snorts and turns so they’re chest to chest, sheets a little twisted around their ankles, “Besides, we can do that in our pool.” He grins at Sirius’ noise of interest, “Tonight.”
“Okay, we swim. Get food at beach.” He throws the sheets off of him and walks naked to his suitcase. “Wear blue swimsuit I buy you, best on you.”
Remus rolls his eyes, “You only like it because it’s short. It could be neon pink and you wouldn’t care.”
Sirius sends him a grin over his shoulder, “Most true. So what?”
Remus wears the blue swimsuit.
~
“Hey, put head back! Not trust me?”
Remus laughs, tightening his arms around Sirius’ neck as the water laps around them, “Not at all, you’re definitely going to dunk me.”
Sirius has Remus cradled in his arms and is trying to convince him to lay back in the water. He’s smirking while doing it though, and Remus is wary.
“I’m what? Dunk?”
Remus cracks one eye open against the sun, “Yeah. You know, like a cookie.”
It occurs to him a second too late that that was the wrong thing to say.
Sirius’ laugh sounds surprised out of him and he does, in fact, dunk Remus—well, dunks them both. Remus just has time to close his eyes against the salty water, and then laughs at the way Sirius’ hair is plastered against his forehead. At least until Sirius shakes his head like a dog, and it curls up again.
“Yes, perfect,” He says, and swings Remus around so that Remus’ legs lock around his waist and he can brush their noses together, “I’m dunk like cookie. Sweet enough, карамель. New name?”
“No way.” Remus laughs. He rests his cheek against Sirius wet shoulder, presses a little kiss to his neck. Sirius stands, just holding him in the waves for a moment. “I like this.”
Sirius strokes a palm over his neck. It’s probably a little slimy with sunscreen, but Sirius doesn’t seem to mind, “Like close?” He murmurs against Remus’ ear, to which Remus hums a yes. “Like ocean?”
“Yeah.” Remus sighs, pushing his fingers through the short hair at the back of Sirius’ neck, “Or just you.”
Sirius scoffs and shifts Remus so he can look at him, “Like me? I’m dunk you again!”
“I’ll bring you with me.” Remus tightens his arms, just a little, holding them together.
Sirius smiles so wide his nose scrunches a little and he swipes his thumbs over Remus’ hips, “Hope you always bring me with you.”
“More like you bring me with you.” Remus laughs, but it settles a little heavily somewhere in his chest. He hasn’t forgotten how much Sirius has to travel for his work, how sometimes they might not see each other for days or weeks while he’s away on a project. How this vacation is not forever, this little bubble of pure them.
Sirius makes a sad noise. “Sad eyes, what happen?”
“Just—you know.” Remus smiles, and presses a kiss to the tip of Sirius’ nose, “You travel a lot.”
Sirius rolls his eyes, like this problem shouldn’t even exist, “Always bring you with me, Remus.” Then he ducks his head a little when Remus looks away, trying to recapture his gaze, “Only if you want, of course. You can come to fun places, like Japan.” He sinks down into the water so their floating a little, up to their necks, and captures Remus’ mouth when he gasps a little at the temperature change, “What Remus want?” He smiles and his tongue peaks out to wet his lower lip, “Other than me, of course.”
Remus laughs softly. “I…” He swallows and reaches up to push a strand of hair away from where it was sticking close to Sirius’ eye. He smooths it down again and then leaves his hand there, brushing Sirius’ cheek, “I never got to go to university. I—I know I’m a little old, I mean, 22 is usually when people are finishing, but…”
“Remus. Remushya.”
And Remus has to look up just to put a face to the sheer happiness that is in Sirius’ voice. It’s an expression Remus doesn’t think he’ll be quick to forget, but he can’t imagine why Sirius looks like that just because he said he wants to go to school.
“I’m—“ Sirius squeezes Remus closer, “Yes, so good. You love. You find nice school in New York, we live together, you focus on studies. I—you let me…you let me take care? Please.” Sirius has dropped his voice. He whispers the words against the corner of Remus’ mouth, “I’m want so much for you. Remus, I’m want give you…everything. Let me? Is okay?”
Remus feels his lip shake a little before he even realizes that he sort of wants to cry. He really is keeping a pattern here. But he’s wanted this for so long, school, and to have it just plain offered to him like that… Sirius shushes him softly and leans forward to try and kiss the quiver away.
“But—“ Remus’ voice cracks, “But what will I—could I—ever give you back? I literally have nothing.”
“Remus.” Sirius makes a sort of tisking noise and is suddenly wading them forward back towards shore, Remus still in his arms. “You listening or be stubborn?”
“I’m not—what—“
Sirius wades through the water until he can kneel on the sand and lays Remus gently back against the shallowly lapping waves. They’re only just on shore and Remus laughs a little as Sirius settles himself between his thighs.
“Listening, Remus?” Sirius holds himself up by his forearms, blocking the sun from overhead until he is all Remus can see.
The sea rushes up around their bodies, cool next to the heat of Sirius’ bare thighs and chest pressed to Remus’ skin. Remus feels safe, here between Sirius and the sand.
“I’m listening.” He says.
“Okay.” Sirius curls his wrists inward so he can run his hands through Remus’ hair and push it off his forehead. “Give…” Sirius presses his lips together for a moment, eyes flicking between Remus’ as he tries to string the right words together in his head, “You give me everything already. Everything. Remus, I’m…” Sirius shakes his head and stray droplets of water fall onto Remus’ chest and cheeks, “I’m so lonely before, you no idea.” Sirius laughs a little and pets his hand through Remus’ hair again, eyes following the motion like he can’t believe he gets to do it, “I don’t even know how lonely, you know? Then you come to me, and I see. You stand at door first time I see you and ask me about home and I think…I don’t know, you sleep in my arms and I…I can feel when you not there now.”
“Sirius.” Remus starts but Sirius presses a kiss to his cheek.
“Is big, cold place that…that is waiting for you to make warm.” He sends Remus a soft smile, “And now you are here.” He says the words slowly, with careful grammar. Sirius shrugs one shoulder, “Everything.”
Remus can only look up at him for a moment, then he shakes his head, “Sometimes, with the things you say to me in English, I think I’d die if I could understand what you’d be able to say in Russian.”
Sirius grins, pressing his nose beneath Remus’ jaw, “Learn Russian, find out.” Then he leans back with a mockingly serious look on his face, “No, I’m take back. Dick hard all time if you speak Russian.”
Remus laughs loudly at that and pulls Sirius into a salty kiss.
They’re rinsing off the salt beneath the outdoor shower on their deck when Remus presses his hands to Sirius’ chest, “Hey, wait.”
“Hm?” Sirius blinks down at him, hair a mess from running his fingers through it and the water.
“I just—“ Remus smooths one hand up to his neck, “I have to make sure you know. I’d love you if you didn’t have a cent to your name. I’d love you without—without the money, without any of it. Okay? Do you know that?”
Sirius looks at him, hands freezing, and between one blink and the next his eyes are glassy with tears. Remus reaches up to cup Sirius’ cheeks in his hands, “I’d love you if this hotel didn’t exist, I’d love you if the apartment you were offering to let me come live with you in was a one room shack.” He pushes up on his toes and presses a hard kiss to Sirius’ mouth, tasting the sea.  “I’d love you through anything. Okay?”
Sirius smiles, a tear escaping from his eyes and mixing with the soft stream of water. He sniffles and laughs, curling his hands around Remus’ wrists and rubbing lightly, “Okay.”
Remus laughs a little too, “Got it, Sirushya?”
Sirius laughs a little more, squeezing his eyes shut and tilting his head up into the spray for a moment, smile wide, and then arching down to kiss Remus. “I’m got it.”

Commission#4
For @vchanny-og
Prompt: Makoto teaches the girls to cook. To commission me please click here for information! To see what other people are offering up commissions please see here!
The recipe for peanut butter cookies is fool-proof, three-ingredients. Four, if you added chocolate chips. The first time that Makoto had made them, Usagi had eaten two dozen by herself, and when she’d found out how easy they were, she’d begged and whined and pouted until Makoto had agreed to teach her.
“Mamo-chan would love these, don’t you think? Especially if we add chocolate! And peanut butter is healthy and has lots of protein so he wouldn’t even disapprove!”
Eggs. Crunchy peanut butter. Sugar. Chocolate chips. Parchment-lined baking sheet for 11 minutes at 170 degrees Celsius.
Makoto lines up all the ingredients on the counter, helpfully preheats the oven to the correct temperature. She goes out to her balcony to check on her plants, and is halfway through dead-heading some leggy basil when the smell of smoke comes wafting through the open door. Thoroughly alarmed, she drops her clippings and runs in, yanks the oven open to find lumps of what look to be charcoal. Usagi’s wail could pass for a fire engine careening onto the scene complete with lights and sirens.
“I don’t know what happened, Mako-chan! I didn’t do anything except what you asked, and now everything is ruined and there are NO COOKIES and you are probably going to be mad at me!”
With a long, windy sigh, Makoto checks the counter. Peanut butter, check. Sugar, check. Chocolate chips, check-- and if she’s not mistaken, Usagi dumped in about half a cup more than the recipe called for. A bowl of cracked open eggs, yolks almost mockingly bright orange, winked up at her.
Makoto shakes her head, sends Usagi out to the bakery, and cuts up some peppers and tomatoes, retrieves her snipped basil. It seemed like she’d be having omelettes for dinner.

“So we sear the steak at a high temperature in a cast-iron skillet to take advantage of the Maillard reaction for the sake of optimal flavour.” Ami scribbles some type of complex chemical molecule diagram on the margins of the recipe that she’d meticulously copied from Makoto’s cookbook, and does a few equations, and murmurs to herself. “I suppose that makes sense. The temperature of the cooking surface will exceed 140 degrees Celsius, which will cause the reactive carbonyl group of the sugar present in the molecule interact with the nucleophilic amino group of the amino acid.”
“Yeah. Something like that. And then you finish in a low and slow oven so you don’t overcook the meat. This is an expensive cut of steak-- you don’t want it to be cooked to death.”
Makoto did not care over-much about the complex chemical reactions and science behind the process-- it was enough, really, to know that as long as one controlled the temperature and time, and seasoned the pricey cut of beef simply but well (sea salt, coarse-ground pepper and a few sprigs of rosemary), one could have a fancy date night meal in the comfort of one’s own home. “Medium rare is the optimal doneness for steak, in my opinion. Use a food thermometer, cook it to 54 degrees Celsius, then rest for three minutes before slicing, and you’re good to go.”
“I understand the reasoning behind safe internal cooking temperatures,” Ami muses as she follows Makoto’s lead, carefully wiping down the cherry-red surface of her steak with a paper towel to dry it, then sprinkling on salt and pepper on both sides. “Obviously, you don’t want harmful disease-causing microorganisms to grow within your food product, and it either needs to be too hot or too cold for the bacteria and viruses and fungi to survive. But why are there exceptions to the rule? Your recipe says that a rare steak reaches the internal temperature of 51 degrees, a medium rare of 54, a medium of 58 and so on. Doesn’t that put the person who prefers to eat their steak rare at greater risk? How does a restaurant get around that liability? It’s not as though it can do a medical check of the customer to ensure that they have no history of immunological disorders or gastrointestinal problems. And what about nations which choose to ignore these limits altogether? We serve sushi and sashimi here in Japan, which is certainly not cooked to 62 or highter. The French have their Carpaccio and tartare. The Lebanese have their kibbee nayee, and so on.”
Makoto watches as Ami grinds exactly three shakes of pepper onto each side of her steak, then rolls her eyes. “How does your guy like his steak cooked? That’s all I need to know.”
Ami blushes almost as red as the meat she’s fiddling with. “Umm. Medium rare is fine. And he’s hardly ‘my’ guy. More of Mamoru’s, wouldn’t you say?”
“You’ve already split hairs over the science of cooking. I don’t think I have enough energy to argue over the exact nature of your relationship with the mouthy blond menace. Do you think you can put together a nice green salad to go with these steaks? That way we can get done quicker, and I can make myself scarce before he comes here.”

Makoto knows better than to attempt to teach Rei anything too outlandish in the kitchen. Rei is a traditionalist in every sense of the word, and probably would not be caught dead in some hipster gastro-pub serving deconstructed salad of micro-greens topped with lobster foam something-or-another no matter how many Michelin stars and James Beard awards the place might have won. Rei is also reasonably competent with her hands and not particularly accident-prone, so something like steamed gyoza seems right up her alley. Sure, making the filling and dough from scratch is an extra effort, but her friend had never been the type to settle for mediocre and ordinary.
Her first warning that things might not turn out quite so well is when Rei takes a full step back when she sets the food processor on the counter. “What is that?”
Her tone could only have been snottier had the food processor been possibly coated in dung and mildew and maybe plastered with boy band stickers. “It’s a food processor. So we can easily chop up the chives, grind up the pork.”
“I have a perfectly serviceable set of knives here.” Rei turns up her aristocratic little nose and points to the knife-block, which, to be fair, holds a set of heirloom-quality blades. Trust the senshi of war to know her sharp objects, Makoto thinks drolly, but she acquiesces. “All right. You can mince the chives with that, I guess. But I’m using the food processor to grind the meat.”
They both get to work, and Rei glares at the machine as soon as it starts up as though the noise offended her on a personal level. She’s not bad-- indeed, her cuts are decent even by chef standards, but by the time Makoto has finished up her meat and mixed in soy sauce and ginger and garlic and a pinch of allspice and an egg, she’s only about a quarter of the way done with her chives. Slowly and stubbornly, she soldiers on as Makoto measures out flour and water and a pinch of salt.
“What in the world is that?”
Now, the question is directed towards the stand mixer plugged into the wall outlet. Makoto doesn’t even dignify that with a response, and dumps in flour, salt and water, lets fly. Sure, she can knead the dough by hand if she wanted to. And stretch it, cut it, roll it out for the dumpling wrappers. And maybe, if he’s very, very lucky, Jun would have gyoza sometime within the next two years. She’s just about ready to start rolling the dough when Rei finally finishes cutting the chives by hand, and dumps them into the bowl of the ground meat mixture, scowling at the way the damp green mince clings to her fingertips. Makoto finishes mixing the filling, then shows Rei, quickly, how to pinch the edges of the dumpling shut.
She waits until the knives are washed and put away and the pot is simmering before turning to her friend with a mischievous look, tongue firmly tucked in cheek. “Well. I’m sure Jun will appreciate your painstaking work on this meal, doing things the old-fashioned way by hand. He’ll know just how much you care from the sheer effort you went through.”
If looks could kill, Makoto would be buried six feet under complete with an ugly angel-shaped monument and an elaborate wreath of flowers on her grave. She manages to keep a straight face while she takes the dumplings out the pot, then excuses herself. She’s still laughing when she arrives at her own apartment a good half-hour later.

Leave it to Minako, of course, to want to learn the most complicated, exotic dish of them all.
“I think it would be perfect! He doesn’t eat pork or beef, and I love spicy food, and I know you’ll help me and it will turn out wonderfully!”
Makoto eyes the recipe bookmarked on Minako’s phone-- very heavily starred on Pinterest, and apparently the handiwork of some world-renowned celebrity chef. “Indian lamb curry, though? That’s… quite ambitious of you, Minako.” Indeed, the list of ingredients is daunting in and of itself, even for a seasoned home cook, and Minako’s idea of gourmet home cooking generally involved cracking an egg over her boiling ramen noodles.
“Oh don’t you worry. I’ve watched a TON of youtube videos. And cooking reality shows. That Gordon Ramsay is HILARIOUS. And it all goes into the slow cooker, so it hardly requires fancy techniques and knifework and the like. All I have to do is toss everything in there and push a button and spend the rest of my time making myself look gorgeous and sexy, right??”
Makoto eyes the recipe again. She’s pretty sure that Minako has never heard of the term ‘garam masala’ in her life. “Maybe you should at least let me taste it before you serve it. Just in case.”
Six hours later a mostly-decent-looking sample of the dish is placed in front of her. The curry is an appetizing orange-brown colour, and the kitchen smells invitingly of spices. Minako had even taken the time to toss some finely chopped parsley onto the meat for a pop of bright green. Makoto is pleasantly surprised, and gives Minako an approving smile which lasts all of three seconds-- the three seconds it takes to put a piece of the meat in her mouth. She gags, and spits it out. “Oh, GOD! What did you put in this?! It tastes like the Dead Sea… if the Dead Sea were on fire!”
Minako shoots her a wide-eyed look from those baby blues, thoroughly bewildered. “Welllllll… all these videos said to salt with every step of the cooking pricess. So I did. It was probably like close to half a cup of salt total, because I added some after every other ingredient. And then I didn’t have tomato paste so I substituted ketchup. Basically the same thing, you know? And I didn’t have the tablespoon of fresh ginger, so I used a tablespoon of ginger powder, and shelled pistachios look just like cardamom pods for like a tenth of the price, and I used Old Bay seasoning instead of Bay leaves… But the only thing I absolutely couldn’t figure out at all was this ‘garam masala’ stuff! So I left it out.”
Without a word, Makoto dumps the entire contents of the slow cooker into the trash, picks up her phone, and dials the local Indian restaurant, Within short order, two takeout containers are delivered-- an Indian lamb curry, and an accompanying container of cheese naan and rice.
“Just… put it in your own plates,” Makoto tells the other girl, shaking her head between gulps of water. “The kitchen smells like you’ve been cooking all day. It’ll be our little secret and he will never, ever know.”
