Hey author, how are you? 💕
I'm curious to know what kind of music the RO's like. Who are their idols? Any artists/genres that are a guilty pleasure for them?
Any kind of music they pretend to like just 'cos it's popular? *discreetly looks at Kinsley*
Hello nonie~ I'm doing good thank you!
this kind of question is hard for me, personally, to think about because of my own relationship with music and music artists (which is why this took so fucking long) which is to say I love music and don't really pay attention much to artists beyond the fact they make the music I love (lmao I really don't care about celebrities, I find it quite concerning that so many people idolise them so much... like your(general) fave is just a guy at the end of the day lmao) (that being said I can understand having an influence and following the *work* of an artist you really connect to) and I find it hard to make hard line distinctions between genres, aha 🤭
That being said, let's have a look at some music! (This is an excuse to show off my extensive and exhaustive music reach and taste, so thank you!)
Dylan──they're open to all types of music but they only really purchase R&B albums! Artists like Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, Prince, Alicia Keys, Frank Ocean, SZA, Kehlani and Miguel are all artists Dyl owns albums (and vinyls!!) for! Dyl introduced Kin to R&B and they usually listen to the artists she likes more when they're together (Beyoncé, Victoria Monét, Lionel Ritchie etc) They like ‘Foreign Language’ R&B too, artists like BIBI, DEAN, Cherrie, Girl Ultra, Adi Oasis, ØZI, Yseult and Lous And The Yakuza.
Shay──the real eclectic listener! He likes next to every genre of music, Rap, Hip Hop, R&B, Pop, K-pop, J-rock, Folk, Funk, Phonk, EDM, Heavy Metal, Grunge, House, Synth, Soul... even Country... Country Fusion! Shay likes artists that kind of... don't have a genre? Like Sleep Token, Twenty One Pilots, Pink Floyd, Oingo Boingo, Lene Lovich, David Bowie, Gorillaz, Poppy, Bring Me The Horizon, Afterlife, Seventeen, Red Velvet and Hannah Wicklund. He definitely love finding new music as well as sharing new music! (Watch the YouTube/Twitch channel that's got a segment dedicated to reacting to new music!! Like HTHAZE!)
Kinsley──lmao she doesn't mind Popular music but, like, the last Taylor Swift album she actively sought out was 1989 (she's partial to This Love) and Kin would rather die than be subjected to Trap music. She's very into genres like Alternative Indie, Indie Rock, Neo Soul, and R&B artists like Hozier, Florence + The Machine, Lorde, Phoebe Bridgers, Lizzy McAlpine, Searows, Reneé Rapp, Ethel Cain and Noah Kahan. Her R&B influence is mainly from being Dylan's friend but she does love artists like Beyoncé (she really loved her self titled album and especially Virgo's Groove off of Renaissance), Victoria Monét (particularly the Jaguar II album) and Khalid as well as older artists like Mary J. Blige, Marvin Gaye or Lionel Ritchie!
J──they tend to listen to music for the beat, the bass, the instrumentals more than lyrics. They like heavier genres like Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Alternative Rock, Punk Rock, Nu Metal, Grunge and other genres like EDM, Synth, Techno and Trance. They also listen to Italian artists quite a lot, mainly because J wants to keep up with the language (because their father refuses to speak it or teach them) so artists like Måneskin, Jovanotti, Lacuna Coil, Max Gazzé, Vanerus, and even Vivaldi. J also listens to anything their sister recommends them, even if it's the most bubblegum pink pop shit they've ever heard─if Bells likes it they're listening. Shay will also introduce them to the wonders of J-rock and K-pop which bend genre all the time!
Theo──a Pop lover! Or rather, Theo tends to stick to listening to the radio or the Popular Playlist on Spotify! They tend to like more instrumental artists like or soundtrack artists like Hans Zimmer, Hiroyuki Sawano, Danny Elfman, Vangelis, Rachel Portman (who was the first female composer to win an academy award for best original score!) and Michael Giacchino over anything else and they 'broaden their horizons' by being dragged to Jazz bars and open house cafés by C (and MC) so it's not like they're stuck in one/two genre's!!
Bonus! Some Modern/Nu Jazz artists C likes: Ezra Collective, Nubya Garcia, Masego, Cherise, Camille Munn, Blue Lab Beats, Kasami Washington, Esperanza Spalding, Snarky Puppy, GoGo Penguin, Mathilde Widding and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah!

im pretty interested in the Magnus Archives....esp with the Magnus Protocol coming out ..... where can i consume it and what is it about ......
YOU LET ME INFODUMP ABOUT ONE PIECE AND NOW I'D LIKE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
OKAY OKAY OKAY YOU HAVE. YOU HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA THE FREEDOM YOUVE JUST GIVEN ME. IM SHAKING IN MY SEAT. OKAY.
the magnus archives is a 200 episode 5 season horror fiction podcast that i am incredibly neurodivergent about. you can listen to on basically every platform ever- it's on spotify, it's on youtube, and i think the rusty quill website has the episodes on there as well!!
i'll try to keep this spoiler-free LKDFJLSKD especially if you end up wanting to consume it (WHICH YOU SHOULD. ITS UNREALISTICALLY GOOD). the basic premise of the magnus archives is that there's an organization called the magnus institute that deals in the statements of people who have had dealings with the supernatural. at the beginning of the podcast, all the different statements seem like individual creepy stories but once you finish the podcast and then go back and relisten?? oh my god everything just clicks into place and makes so much sense its crazy
the writing is. incredible, to say the very least. every statement *and* the episodes that aren't statements are all delightfully creepy- there are rarely jumpscares and the kind of horror that tma goes for is so EDIBLE oh my god. it's a wonderful series to binge- fair warning though that it takes a bit to get in its stride, the first 20 episodes or so can feel a bit of a slog to get through at times but once you do, you will never want to stop listening.
everything loops back in on itself and there are statements in season three that give you context for statements back in season one and LSKDFJLKDSFJ. it is SO GOOD.
i would tell you everything about every member of the archival staff but i've already rambled on a fair amount so. jonathan sims time!!
jon sims, the newly appointed head archivist of the magnus institute, is the main character. and this guy. THIS. GUY. my fave character isn't usually the main character but jon is such a STUPID WET CAT. him and his ceaseless watcher bullshit. he has a super entertaining personality and a bunch of really cool character arcs and just LKDFSJDLK. best main character of any piece of media ever.
for protocol there are only 2 episodes out rn and anything substantial i have to say about it would be riddled with spoilers but i'll just tell you that it is also INCREDIBLE and i would die for samama khalid, alice dyer and gwendolyn bouchard. and i want to kill lena.
OKAY UM THATS AS FAR AS I CAN GO WITHOUT GETTING SPOILER-Y. HOPE YOU ENJOY MY RANT LDSFJEIONC

Tagged by @belladonna-and-the-sweetpeas, and this was a fantastically fun, low-pressure thing to spend a little bit of time doing, so thank you for the enrichment activity! I probably talked too much, but here we go. Song links are to YT.
Put my On Repeat playlist from Spotify on shuffle, and here are the first 10 songs that came up - and ... oh, lol. This is maybe not as cool and edgy as I’ve managed to look in similar memes in the past? otoh, I'm finding it kind of interesting how many of these have actual dance associations, this time around.
1. Rabbit Hole, Natalia Kills - I had to laugh when this one popped up first - this one's on my Only Friends playlist, although I had kind of forgotten quite what a banger it was, until I dug it out again. If only I knew how to vid, y'all would absolutely get a full-length OFTS vid to this.
2. Before He Cheats, Carrie Underwood - Ha! This one is ALSO off my Only Friends playlist. This was the first one that went on the playlist, in anticipation. I figured the unhinged energy would be appropriate before we were through.
3. Girls In Their Summer Clothes, Bruce Springsteen - I have loved Bruce Springsteen with my whole and entire heart ever since a friend’s older sister introduced us to his music when I was in middle school, and I knowingly and deliberately imported my own experience of discovering Springsteen into “In Ordinary Time” and imprinted it onto Ray Mukada with very few changes and without the least bit of shame. There are a handful of Springsteen albums that hold a particularly special place in my heart, and Magic is one of those. This song’s actually really light, comparatively, but it’s gorgeous and breezy while still being full and rich in that way the E Street Band can’t really miss, and it feels like summer. I’ve been enjoying it so much in the waning days of heat with that cooler air edging underneath the night breeze. It … makes me want to shag, even though it’s not beach music. It's clearly a creation of the boardwalk, even if its accent is Jersey, instead of Carolina.
4. Work Song, Hozier - The MV for this one - choreographed by Jillian Meyers - is fantastic, and my obsession with the song was really cemented after seeing Lex Ishimoto and Gaby Diaz dance to it for SYTYCD - a piece choreographed by Mandy Moore and clearly influenced by the MV. I must have watched that particular performance 100 times by now. The show used a cover by Luke Wade, but I do prefer Hozier’s original version. It will sometimes drop off the On Repeat playlist, but as soon as it turns up again in the shuffle, it ends up back on repeat.
5. lovely, Billie Eilish with Khalid - I have not been the same about this song since I somehow stumbled across Ten and Winwin's choreography to it on YT. I have no idea how I found it - I know literally nothing about WayV, NCT, Ten or Winwin except this choreographed piece (which you also have to see the live performance of, because while it's not as clean, it gives a better view of how Ten appears to be almost, kind of, puppetting Winwin in one section). I would poke someone’s grandma in the eye (ok, not really) for a chance to get my hands on the “ring and portrait” remix they use, but meanwhile, the original version will do.
6. Lyfjaberg, Wardruna - Healing Mountain. So, my morning routine, on the days I work, is to get to the hospital about 20 minutes ahead of when I actually need to be there, so I can sit in my car and breathe and meditate and do some self-reiki right before everything starts. I usually don't listen to anything on my way into work, but on the days I do, the days when things are going hard, like the past few weeks, with heavy patient loads and high acuity - this is the song I listen to on that drive in, on repeat. (The weeks I'm working with end of life patients, I tend to use Helvegen for this, instead, or alternate them.)
7. My Silver Lining, First Aid Kit - Thanks, The Umbrella Academy. I downloaded this one on Spotify about 12.6 seconds after hearing it on a S3 ep of the show, and I don't know that it's ever left the On Repeat playlist since then.
8. Letters From The Sky, Civil Twilight - Huh. A couple of weeks ago, about three bars from this song wisped through my mind, and I was haunted by them until I could finally manage to get my fingers in them and hold them down long enough to trace them to some lyrics in my memory, and then I had to google those couple of lines to finally pin down the actual song. And then I went and dl’d it and have listened to it A LOT, apparently. It was used for a fanvid that I watched obsessively a bajillion years ago – so long that I’m not entirely certain who it even featured, although I’m … pretty sure? … that it was Agron x Nasir from Starz’s Spartacus. I might have even first seen the vid back when I’d only watched a Nagron supercut, before I saw the full show. I can't for the life of me find it anymore - there's a Spartacus vid on YT now that uses it but it's a more general S1 vid, and that's absolutely not the one I remember, which included footage of the operation on Nasir in the abandoned temple.
9. Threat, WEARETHEGOOD/Frank Bentley/Skrxlla - Loooooool, THANK YOU, LITA. I picked this particular song up off of one of the eps of Love In The Air, one of the ones in the middle – this gets played over Payu and Pai having a practice race at the track. I was like, “waitaminit,” paused, went to google some lyrics so I could find the artist, and came back with this on dl’d on Spotify. It's another one that probably has not been off the On Repeat playlist since.
10. Sacrifice, The Weeknd - So, Vinh Nguyen choreographed a piece to this at Offstage Dance Studio that is totally and completely responsible for the way this song keeps popping up on my On Repeat playlist. I think I first ran across the choreo in a set with Baily Sok, Kinjaz's Jason Lin and Lex Ishimoto, but there's more than one version out there.
OK, if you've already been tagged or don't want to do this, don't worry, but tagging (hm, looks at recent notifications) @yagirlyacchan, @henpeckedho, @elementaldrop, @jill-question-mark, @liathebookwyrm. Go!

Wild Rivers Sidelines Tour 2022
Ft: Violet Skies
Venue:
The Summit Music Hall (Officially called “The Summit.”
(09.16.2022)
Stats:
1st time seeing Wild Rivers
1st time seeing Violet Skies
Friend Stats:
2nd show with the lovely Emma. (Technically the first full show we’ve been to together cause the first was a Warped Tour (date I can’t remember) that we met up with each other, but I stayed the whole day and she did not.
Photo Notes:
All photos taken by me!
It starts with Violet Skies’ set and then goes into Wild Rivers. Also I’m not drinking, drinking in that bathroom picture, I’m just finishing off my Liquid Death (expensive can water) while I have a post concert outfit photo shoot.
PS: I had an abundance of photos once again, so check out the Akward Side Blog for more photos from the show and just that day.
Hey Why Not:
I’d heard about this show and was excited, but wasn’t going to go or rather I wasn’t sure about going. It was like “you like 3 songs, is that enough?” Later on when planning for shows that I was sure about I asked my friend Emma if she wanted to go with me and she was down. Tentative plans were made, but I  ended up buying tickets the day the venue announced a low ticket warning and she was luckily able to do the same. I dragged my feet on this one, but it all worked out in the end. The deciding factor was me walking around the world singing “Thinking ‘Bout Love” for the last 2 years and figured it deserved a live listen.
The Early Bird Gets “2nd” In Line:
After getting my friend out of bed and out of the house earlier than she would have chosen for herself, we went downtown for a decent lunch from the place that I always says disappoints me. This time it was alright but the firecracker fries or whatever they’re called, did truly have a kick and now I understand why I never got them before, they never come with your meal already. It should be a crime to have burgers or chicken tenders or whatever on a bar menu and it not automatically come with a fries or onion rings.
Anyway what I thought was late (like always) but was actually fairly early. We ended up being “second” in line, as there was a whole group ahead of us that had been following the tour for a couple dates already. I thanked my friend for braving the heat and the sidewalk multiple times, to which the reward ended up being meeting Khalid and Andrew (2 members of the band) outside of the venue beforehand, getting barricade standing spots and those chef’s kiss (in my opinion) photos I was able to take by just being up there.
Violet Skies Featuring Kyndyl On The Keys and Background Vocals:
In preparing for this show I found out that I actually knew who Violet Skies was based off of one song that Spotify recommended to me several years ago, which meant I didn’t feel too out of the loop on her, like some opening acts I’ve seen on other tours. I kinda learned “I’ll Buy A House” as well, but we all know the songs you prepare yourself with rarely make it to the setlist. That being said it didn’t matter that I only really knew “Is She Gonna Be There” cause the whole set was fantastic. Any line or chorus that I could hold onto I did and she just looked so cool up there, like do you see that outfit?! “The Internet” and “Never Be Cool” were standouts in the set list though for sure. AND THE LIGHTING COLORS?!  Emma said it was her favorite performance of the night.
WILD RIVERS:
I did some runs of the Sidelines album and just Wild Rivers in general leading up to the show, but still thought I was gonna be hella rusty, when in fact I knew more than I thought I did. Again the stage lighting really set the vibe and the mood for the entire show and it just helped with the overall flow of their set perfectly. Some of the best lighting as an accessory at a show I’ve ever been to. Beyond lighting though, everything else was just great and I had so much fun being in that crowd. When you’re just vibing, feeling good and the crowd is good company, the show is so much better. This wasn’t a show with a bunch of distractions or extra noise. It truly felt like the people who were there, actually wanted to be there. (Still heard a little bit of noise from the way back at the beginning of the night, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as the Joy Oladokun show. At this point I think there’s something wrong with this particular venue’s sound, especially during the openers.)
They played “Amsterdam” early on which set things up for me to not struggle through the set. “Safe Flight” and “Long Time” were top notch live. I love those songs on the album, but live you get all the extra feels and story that come with them too. There were a couple covers thrown in there as well, something I never typically mind at a show. Dropping a non-Complicated Avril Lavigne track with “I’m With You” was much liked by the crowd, however if you ask the crowd for a song to cover and you go with The Backstreet Boys, which they did, you’re going with the safest choice and I wish we as fans/audience members would use our powers better going forward. PS: That’s not a dig on The Backstreet Boys or Wild Rivers, that’s just me saying can we find a new safe option.
The encore of course was “Thinking Bout’ Love” and my heart was just so happy. I took a video clip and I was just as loud as the band, so much so that it’s mainly just a video with me and the crowd as the main audio, with Wild Rivers as background vocals. This is what makes an encore for me and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
The End Of The Night:
I should have gotten a picture with Khalid and Andrew (of Wild Rivers) before the show cause they didn’t come out afterwards, but it’s a lot more common during these particular times to not always come out at the end. Plus the show was sold out, so that is a real factor as well. That being said we did however get to meet Violet and Kyndyl at the merch table. They were both wonderful and very sweet. I’m already ready for them to come back.
I highly recommend y’all check out “If I Saw You Again” Violet’s latest album. It’s so good. If you need more cool, British, pop in your life, this is my nod!

2022 Music In Review
Post-Spotify Wrapped and as the final albums of the year come out I wanted to dedicate one post to music for the whole of 2022.
I may have binged some of these albums more e.g. Taylor Swift and Harry's House which aren't very groundbreaking but a lot of that was data limitation and general tune catchiness - it was a VERY strong year for pop and a very minimal year for indie/rock music actually.
This list is based on their technical delivery artistically & sonically as well as pure enjoyment.
Tumblr media
Favourite Albums this year:
Renaissance, Beyonce - this album was easily her best work, the truly authentic club anthems honouring her uncle Johnny and the ballroom scene of the 80's is groundbreaking stuff. It slaps, hard.
Mr Morale & the Big Steppers, Kendrick Lamar - wow, this album is deep and the messages buried are so important that it makes even the heavier songs a compelling listen.
This Is What I Mean, Stormzy - sonically Stormzy keeps moving on so much, which is good and bad but I rate his desire to push himself so highly and there are some beautiful tracks on here that make me pine even for unrequited love.
hugo, Loyle Carner - the absolute master at soft jazz rap, he shows so much growth as a person as always lays his life bare for everyone to learn from.
MOTOMAMI +, ROSALIA - a new convert to ROSALIA, her ability to bring her authentic flamenco heritage to mainstream pop in a new and explosive way is tantalising. She had me shimmying on the subway I tell you.
Sonder, Dermot Kennedy - was waiting for this album for year and it's moved on in production values that sound higher quality. If you're in need of a cry, this is the album for you - not groundbreaking but a truly heartfelt album.
Harry's House, Harry Styles - harking back to the start of the year this album truly lifted the spirits in a pretty dark time, beautifully synthed up electric pop is a move-on again for Harry and he's really owning his sound.
Midnights, Taylor Swift - binged this on repeat for a week, a classic TS album full of well-written catchy bangers and a great new style. Absolutely nothing groundbreaking about it and not really a big differentiation in style like folklore was but a solid album with AMAZING marketing.
NO THANK YOU, Little Simz - to be honest, this was a late surprise release so I need to listen more. I'm not immediately grabbed as hard as her last album which had some more jazz/afrobeat backings. This album is serious and has something to say, it's just sometimes harder to listen to.
Where I'm Meant To Be, Ezra Collective - an amazing discovery late into the year of these British-based black artists coming together to make an incredible community-inspired album of jazz/afrobeat bangers that are the perfect accompaniment to basically any moment.
BRIGHTSIDE, The Lumineers
Caprisong, FKA Twigs
ATTENTION: MILEY LIVE, Miley Cyrus
Dance Fever, Florence + The Machine
SOS, SZA - could be higher but only just came out!
Tumblr media
Notable additional songs that slapped this year, not in strict order:
Running Up That Hill, Kate Bush. I'm always happy when Kate Bush gets her time in the limelight again and I feel like this song encapsulated a moment in time this summer and I love that a whole new audience discovered KB!
Afraid To Feel, LF SYSTEM. This was such a lovely little summer banger.
Nail Tech, Jack Harlow. There were a few too many lazy duds to list the main album but I really liked this song specifically.
Starlight, Dave
In The Club EP, Mahalia
go, Cat Burns
WAIT FOR U (feat Drake & Tems), Future
Last Call, Khalid
Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, Lana Del Ray
IFTK, Tion Wayne (La Roux)
Something In The Orange, Zack Bryan
I Burned LA Down, Noah Cyrus
Vegas (Elvis), Doja Cat
Stay With Me, Calvin Harris with Justin Timberlake, Halsey, Pharrel Williams
she's all i wanna be, Tate McRae
Tumblr media
All in all a very good year for pop music, and I'm interested in trying to diversify my music taste in 2023.

jj + jessica's playlist
i hope you don't mind, i used what you sign your requests off for the title! i also know you use apple music and not Spotify (from the screenshot you sent me) so i decided to just write it out and you can make it a playlist so you can listen to it in any order you want and not just on shuffle with ads (luv spotify ads).
i also thought jj was a better match for you. jj looks more for the connection he has with someone and their personality. i think he defo is just attracted to sexual compatibility and if there is a sexual spark (and romantic).
jj + jessica's playlist
1. take off all your cool - sabrina carpenter
i know you like this song (thank you for introducing it to me btw) and since you said you were sassy/sarcastic i feel like you would make jj work to progress your relationship (much like the fic i wrote for you to this song).
2. vibes - chase atlantic
the flirting! jj is a flirt and when he wants someone, he's getting them. with you, it would be more than just a quest/game - it would be real and he would be flirting + vulnerable. he would leave everything up to you to decide and would never push himself onto you. after a game of cat and mouse, you two would move to the next stage.
3. starstruckk - 3oh!3 (feat. katy perry)
jj questions how he could be right for you because he never knew love until he met you. he was a manwhore who really didn't know how to say love. he thinks you might be too innocent for you and questions if he could love you with leaving his fingerprints on you (aka ruining you). also, we all know manwhores, you would make him work for it so thats the katy perry part.
4. young dumb & broke - khalid
i think this is pretty straightforward. this is the early stage before the official dating (i.e., free of commitment/labels, the flirty/fun banter, days/nights spent thinking and pining, etc.).
5. falling - harry styles
i do not think he would cheat or have 'wandering hands' but he is definitely insecure and scared about falling. this really just shows his internal thoughts/worries
6. often - the weeknd
i mean... it's jj
7. tongue tied - grouplove
this is more of the feel the song gives off. young, happy. it makes you want to run down the street hand and hand with your partner while it's raining (not pouring, but not drizzling either)
8. cupid's chokehold/breakfast in america - gym class heroes
when jj loves, jj loves hard. he also doesn't have a lot in life except the people he loves. he also doesn't have a lot of experience in relationships. even though he hates his parents (au where his mom left and he knows she left) he strives to tell them he's found someone and he's happy.
9. saturday sun - vance joy
this is another one about the feeling the song gives off. this is domestic saturday summer mornings spend with your love.
10. take me to church - hozier
to be clear: you two do not break-up in this situation, we ignore that part of the song meaning. but you lovelies know i am a slut for the worship your partner like they are your religion troupe. jj would worship you.
11. don't blame me - taylor swift
jj is rash. he is a reactive person. when you add love into the mix (something that should make the most passive person feral) he's throwing punches at the drop of a hissed word.
12. go down on you - the memories
it's jj.
13. paper rings - taylor swift
jj can't afford much. every girl loves diamonds but you don't care for them/if you get a shiny diamond (even tho he thinks you do). you also met him while he was babysitting high pogues (funny meet cute, uh, hello?).
14. lover - taylor swift
uh, i think this speaks for itself. i am a slut for domestic love.
15. adore you - harry styles
also self explainatory. more worshipping your partner.
16. softcore - the neighbourhood
this one is a bit heavier. being as poor as jj and in the situation, jj is in, life sucks and it throws things that are horrible at you. this is more of the song that shows that hard part of this relationship. jj knows he cant run from his life because you guys love each other too much. he is left questioning if you guys are 'too young for this'. also, ocd is a battle - just like all mental illnesses (you are so stong lovely) and sometimes you question why. this just highlights the struggles you guys face.
17. in the name of love - bebe rexha (feat. martin garrix)
you guys are in it for the long-game. this is pretty self-explanatory as well.
18. i wanna be yours - arctic monkeys
this song is hot and jj just wants to be yours. he will literally do anything for you. you have him devoted to you. he is wrapped around your finger.
19. i wanna be your slave - maneskin
also self-explanatory and hot
20. for your love - maneskin
*cough* song says it all.

My Top Songs of 2021
Unfortunately, I’m finding less and less time each year.  To help preserve this tradition, I have decided to not write as much detail for this year’s list, and likely lists of future years.  As usual, these songs are not the 10 best songs of the year musically, nor are they my favorite songs of the year.  They are simply the songs that defined my year of 2021 the most.  To qualify, the song must have been released this year and an artist is limited to one appearance as a track’s main artist on this list.  Let’s get started!
First, I would like to mention Jeremy Zucker who was apparently my top artist this year according to Spotify Wrapped.  His album CRUSHER, his EP brent ii with Chelsea Cutler, and various other releases were all such easy listens that they were on repeat while working from home.  Fingers crossed that Rihanna releases new music and dominates my 2022.
10. “Ghost” by Justin Bieber
Tumblr media
It feels odd to have Justin Bieber on this list, but “Ghost” was definitely present this year, as was “Anyone.”  I admit, I haven’t listened to all of the Justice album yet, but his collaborations with Khalid, Chance the Rapper, the Kid Laroi, Dominic Fike, Daniel Caesar, Giveon, Benny Blanco, and even an old friend Tori Kelly were all great, but somehow these two solo songs managed to stand out.
9. “I Still Have Faith In You” by ABBA
Tumblr media
I honestly don’t follow ABBA much, but they are a regular on my playlists.  I wasn’t aware that this song was announced all the way back in 2018, but it was definitely worth the wait.  The song as well as the rest of the Voyage album are fresh and new while still sounding classically ABBA.
8. “Happier Than Ever” by Billie Eilish
Tumblr media
Billie Eilish really grew on me this year.  Every year, songs that I knew before find new life in my playlists, and “everything i wanted” became a regular again.  The beginning of “Happier Than Ever” is simple yet addictive, and I’m a sucker for a song taking a dramatic turn.  She definitely delivered with the full Happier Than Ever album, and I’m excited to see what else she puts out.
7. “1 Day 2 Nights” by HRVY
Tumblr media
Every year, there has to be at least one song with infectious energy that just puts a smile on your face, even if it’s a simple bop.  This year, that song is “1 Day 2 Nights.”  HRVY is building a solid discography.
6. “you can go and be with him” by Kayden
Tumblr media
This song has the most addictive chorus.  Singing this song at a concert with the whole crowd would be a fantastic experience.  I’m excited to hear his debut album that is scheduled to be released next year.
5. “Y” by Citizen Queen
youtube
I’m a sucker for girl groups, and at least one always makes this list.  This year was a surprising choice.  I feel like Citizen Queen was able to do what their mentor Scott Hoying’s group Pentatonix has struggled to do: step out from making covers and release original music.  The dynamics in “Y” showcase the girls’ vocals in both an a cappella and pop way that gets this song stuck in my head day after day.
4. “Way Less Sad” by AJR
youtube
“Way Less Sad” really clicked with me and is fitting to 2021.  I like how it is optimistic but not naively optimistic.  There is a grounding reality to it yet it is still uplifting.  I hope to see them on tour and hear more of OK ORCHESTRA live.
3. “drivers license” by Olivia Rodrigo
youtube
“drivers license” was definitely the song nobody could escape this year.  Between this song, “deja vu,” and “good 4 u”, newcomer Olivia Rodrigo made a huge impact with her debut album, SOUR.  I hope she continues to pursue her passion, and I hope the public have learned from Disney artists before her to give her space and allow her to make mistakes and grow.  Plus, she has the connection of being from my hometown and sharing my ethnicity.  Here’s to 2021′s anthem.
2. “imagine” by Ben Platt
youtube
I know it’s the style for male pop vocalists to have a devil-may-care attitude and vocals to match, but I like the trend of classically trained vocalists entering the pop scene, including Ben Platt’s pop projects.  Reverie delivers beautiful and impressive Broadway vocals on a pop album, with “imagine” being the product of a perfect marriage of the two.
1. “Hold You ‘Til We’re Old” by Jamie Miller
youtube
Speaking of vocal greatness, newcomer Jamie Miller definitely sounds like he has been training since landing 3rd place on The Voice UK in 2017.  He reportedly never had vocal training before then, and his 2021 releases “Hold You ‘Til We’re Old” and “Here’s Your Perfect” show that his voice has greatly improved, perhaps even surpassing 2nd place act Into the Ark and winner Mo Adeniran in terms of vocal prowess.  I also had the opportunity to attend his virtual concert and meet and greet.  I asked him which artist of the past he would like to have collaborated with, and he chose Prince and Michael Jackson.  He kindly asked me what mine would be, and I chose The Carpenters.  “Oh, so you like real music?!” he replied.  “Yeah, well I think that’s what you’re making now, real music!  That’s why I’m here.”  I hope Miller releases an album soon that we listen to ‘til we’re old.

Jonathan Joestar’s Spotify Playlist
Hello and welcome to the beginning of a series (or projected to be ahaha) that has to do with Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure characters and their own personalized playlists! I’ll be listing the track list and then will be going more in depth as to why I chose these particular songs for Jonathan’s playlist. The top part will not have spoilers, but be aware that the second part will so read at your own will! For the first playlist, we have none other than Jonathan Joestar, the original Jojo!
💿✨Track list✨💿
01. Jojo (Sono Chi no Sadame), Hiroaki Tommy Tominaga
02. BREATHE, AB6IX
03. breathin, Ariana Grande
04. We Belong, Ong Seong Wu
05. My Heart Will Go On, Céline Dion
06. Silence, Marshmello ft. Khalid
07. Dollhouse, Melanie Martinez
08. London Boy, Taylor Swift
09. Needed Me, Rihanna
10. Line Without a Hook, Ricky Montgomery
11. Glorious, Macklemore ft. Skylar Grey
12. Fighter, Christina Aguilera
13. Classic, MKTO
14. Win, CIX
15. Blue Hour, TOMORROW X TOGETHER
In Depth (spoiler free)
🔹 Jojo (Sono Chi no Sadame), Hiroaki Tommy Tominaga
Sono Chi no Sadame is the first opening of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and is truly what sets up the stage for the rest of the series. Jonathan Joestar, being the first Jojo, begins the Jojo legacy in Phantom Blood. The song lyrics heavily foreshadow the future of the Jojo series and describes Jonathan as someone who has honor and always does what is right. Sono Chi no Sadame is a spectacular opening act to the unique concept of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. *side note* Muscially speaking wow this song is incredibly good the crescendoes and frequent tempo changes as well as the instrumentals amaze me- this is easily my favorite Jojo opening.
🔹BREATHE, AB6IX
Hamon (also known as Ripple or Sendo) is a technique that heavily focuses on controlled breathing. Jonathan learned and mastered Hamon in a very short amount of time. BREATHE also has a very light feeling to it, making the song easy to listen to which connects to Jojo as he is a lighthearted and easy going guy.
🔹breathin, Ariana Grande
Likewise as BREATHE by AB6IX, breathin correlates to the Hamon technique that Jonathan used to fight. Adding onto that, Jonathan lived in a grand mansion and was very well off financially. This song has an elegant sound to it. Despite the wealth that he had, Jojo did not have the easiest childhood. Ever since Dio Brando began to live with him, Jonathan saw many mishaps occur with his relationships, reputation, and self esteem. But, Jonathan Joestar never gave up on his morals and values, and he always kept “breathin and breathin and breathin” no matter what, making sure he would always do the right thing.
🔹Silence, Marshmello ft. Khalid
Silence explains and describes Jonathan’s teenage years very well along with his relationship with Dio. Dio coming to live with Jonathan messed him up as Jonathan felt inferior to Dio who was taking the spotlight by being an amazing athlete and intelligent student. This prompted lots of praise from Jonathan’s father and comparing him to Dio constantly, which made Jonathan feel like he wasn’t worth as much. “I found peace in your violence” is a very meaningful line that contributes to Jonathan’s and Dio’s relationship because of the fact that Dio was... an extremely violent person ever since he was a kid and has done crazy evil things to Jonathan, yet Jonathan didn’t really hate Dio because of Jojo’s noble personality- Dio was Jonathan’s “brother,” therefore Jonathan couldn’t hate him. Jojo felt like he had to be silent over Dio’s actions because he didn’t want to spoil the love that his father gave to Dio, again proving how big of a heart Jonathan had.
🔹Dollhouse, Melanie Martinez
Dollhouse is a rather dark song, but is perfect to show off the darker side of Jonathan’s character. As we know, Jonathan is a young man who presents himself as well... perfect. He’s smart, incredibly kind and noble, rich, popular, and athletic. After Dio appeared and started to really turn things around for Jonathan, he had to continue to present the same image of himself even though his home life was becoming a wreck. His own father constantly scolded him and loved Dio to a great extent. “Pose with your brother won’t you be a good sister?” Jonathan knew that Dio’s actions were evil and he had ill intent at such a young age but Jojo had to go along with the act that Dio put on, faking the close brotherly relationship between them.
🔹London Boy, Taylor Swift
Sometimes I forget that Jonathan Joestar is in fact British. London Boy is a song for Jonathan not just because he lives in/by London, but also because the song describes a man who is just so sweet and has a beautiful laugh. The overall song is just so positive and loving towards this English boy. Every time I listen to this song I now think of Jonathan, and a smile always plasters on my face. Taylor Swift also has a lyric talking about watching rugby which reminded me of the iconic Jonathan and Dio rugby scene early in the story. Jonathan is such a respectful gentleman whom everyone just can’t help but fall in love with his lovely English charm.
🔷Line Without a Hook, Ricky Montgomery
After upon listening to this song, I felt like it really gave off Jonathan vibes because of the light but a tinge of melancholy sound to it. Thing song is quite reflective of Jonathan and Erina with the lyrics “I broke all my bones that day I found you crying at the lake” because it reminded me of when Jonathan first met Erina, who was being bullied by a couple of boys but Jonathan risked getting beaten up to stop the bullies from harming Erina. Later, Jonathan was laying on a hill with his dog Danny, feeling quite down because of none other than Dio, but Erina came and dropped off some grapes and his handkerchief and that was what really started off their relationship. The iconic line “she’s a, she’s a lady, and I am just a line without a hook” explains that Erina was Jonathan’s sole happiness in his life.
🔹Fighter, Christina Aguilera
Honestly, Dio really sucked (I still love him *sigh*). He wanted to completely destroy Jonathan’s life and make it absolutely miserable... for what? Well, despite the horrific actions that Dio performed to ruin Jonathan’s reputation and will, that ultimately backfired as Jonathan rose stronger than ever. Of course Jonathan was mad at Dio for his unspeakable actions, but because of him, he was able to have a certain drive where he gained immense strength in a short amount of time. William Zeppeli describes Jonathan as a Hamon prodigy because of how quickly Jojo was able to master it. Jojo was a natural, but again, he had that determination to defeat Dio once and for all. Despite the hardships Jonathan went through as a result of Dio’s decisions, Jonathan did not resent him in the end- Jojo became an extremely powerful individual because of his past.
🔹Classic, MKTO
In order to create a playlist for our favorite gentleman, it’s only necessary that we add a classic gentlemanly song to it! There’s not much of a deep gloomy reason why this song correlates with Jonathan, in fact it’s the complete opposite. Classic is a song that talks about being a classy and polite man, and to put it simply, Jonathan is exactly that.
🔹Win, CIX
From the God of High School soundtrack, Win is a song about fighting and training together as a team. This upbeat song greatly reminds me of the mini team of Jonathan Joestar, Speedwagon, and William Zeppeli all fighting against Dio and his minions together. Jonathan Joestar was not able to fight Dio without a hamon teacher, William, and an incredibly loyal friend, Speedwagon. This trio had great camaraderie and were overall an incredibly adorable and high morale team.
🔹Blue Hour, TXT
Ok so does this song really have a deep meaning or correlation to Jonathan Joestar? Nahhh not really, I just added it as a bit of a bonus. Blue Hour has an almost fairytale like vibe to it and I just thought it would be something that resonated with Jonathan, especially when he was a child. So, enjoy this little serotonin bonus boost!
⚠️Part 1 Spoilers⚠️
🔹We Belong, Ong Seong Wu
Jonathan’s and Erina’s relationship was very short... but sweet. We Belong is an emotional love song explaining how this one guy meets someone who is their entire world, like when Jonathan met Erina. Through Jojo’s darkest times when he felt like he lost everything, Erina was by his side no matter what. Even though their marriage was abruptly ended with the death of Jonathan, it doesn’t disregard the fact that Erina completely loved Jonathan and supported the Joestar family for the future generations to come. Jonathan and Erina truly belonged together.
🔹My Heart Will Go On, Céline Dion
My apologies, I’m absolutely in love with Jonathan’s and Erina’s relationship. My Heart Will Go On automatically reminds me of the last moments of Jonathan. Since the song was a part of the Titanic soundtrack where there’s a romance story and people die on a sinking ship, it really correlates to Erina and Jonathan going on their honeymoon but Jonathan ending up dead on the ship. Everytime I think of either the song or Jonathan’s and Erina’s last moments together, my heart feels heavy. Both the song and the scene are extremely high in emotions and both suit each other quite well.
🔹Needed Me, Rihanna
Dio killed Jonathan so that he could merge with Jojo’s body, and ultimately use it for evil and for power. “Never told you, you could have it,” symbolizes that Dio forcibly took everything Jonathan had, again including his own body. Although Jonathan would probably never say the lyrics of this song to Dio because he’s so noble, externally everyone knows that without Jonathan, Dio would have been absolutely nothing in Part 3.
🔹Glorious, Macklemore ft. Skylar Grey
The song Glorious questions oneself’s purpose in life, the answer being ‘give back to the people.’ Jonathan has proven that he has countlessly sacrificed himself for others, as was seen when he died on the ship and told Erina to take care of the orphaned baby and to “live a happy life.” Jonathan struggled greatly in his short life, but he always had the passion of helping others since he was born to do so.
🌟Conclusion🌟
Thank you for reading through my first ever blog on Tumblr! I hope you enjoyed the playlist and descriptions! Hopefully this playlist blog series will continue with majority of the main Jojo characters- that’s the plan. Have a good day and/or night💓!

(1/2) Hi Peace! Re: the song truthing, Dream’s Spotify from Feb 27th... man was going through it. A good many of the songs were about self-esteem/mental health, but usually in the context of someone supporting you (most notably being there for you at night) and this makes sense as it was the day the John Swan drama got cleared up. But then a bunch of them are just straight up romantic. I’ve not included the ones that sound like they are more about an ex. I put * in front of the support songs...
(2/2) Dream’s Spotify from 2/27 Blueberry Eyes- MAX (ft. Suga of BTS) Make You Mine- PUBLIC Catching Feelings- Drax Project *Treehouse- James Arthur Adore You- Harry Styles *Be Kind- Marshmello, Halsey *Take it Easy- Surfaces *Know Your Worth- Khalid Anyone- Justin Bieber *Safe With Me- Gryffin You- Benny Blanco, Marshmello, Vance Joy In Your Arms- Illenium and X Lonely- Diplo *Nighlight- Illenium *It’s Okay Not to Be Ok- Demi Levato and Marshmello Let’s Fall in Love for the Night- FINNEAS
YEAAAHH THANK YOU SO MUCH ANON!! i’m gonna have so much fun rambling about all of it!
disclaimer: i do NOT think dream listens to all these with dnf brainrot HAHA i just think its fun to draw parallels!
that said, dream has said before that he “doesn’t really listen to songs that don’t mean something to him” and also “there has to be some songs” in reply to a dono asking if any songs remind George of Dream, so its definitely also fun to guess which songs are his George Songs LOL
💙 Blueberry Eyes - MAX (ft. Suga)
'Cause I'm holding my breath / Wondering when you're gonna wake up in my arms / Head on my chest, my heart's beating / I can't wait to...
Kiss you each morning / With strawberry skies / 'Cause I get so lost in /Your blueberry eyes
such a fun melody and such perfect “absolutely cannot wait for u to move in with me so i can stare at u forever” vibes 🥲 also:
Damn, you look so good /Laying there wearing nothing but my t-shirt
oh hi hoodie saga
💚 Make You Mine - PUBLIC
In the night, we'll take a walk, it's nothing funny / Just to talk
Put your hand in mine / You know that I want to be with you all the time / You know that I won't stop until I make you mine
another one with fun melody / yearning lyrics!! i wonder who dream spends all his time with and talk into the night before sleep calling 🤔
💙 Catching Feelings - Drax Project
I've been catching feelings over you / And I hope you catch them too / I hope you catch them too (yeah) / And I've been going crazy over you
the vibes... crying while raving
💚 *Treehouse - James Arthur
my god.. the first “support” song and i’m already head in hands
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it does seem like this one’s a voice talking to dream... that first verse :( i can imagine him actually taking comfort in the song. and the chorus is reminiscent of both “person i go to have fun with” as well as “person i go to through do not disturb when i need you”
You can be who you are with me 🤍
💙 Adore You - Harry Styles
You don't have to say you love me / You don't have to say nothing / You don't have to say you're mine
Honey / I'd walk through fire for you / Just let me adore you / Like it’s the only thing I’ll ever do
vouch :) acts of service dream our beloved... the way nothing has to be defined and their relationship doesn’t need to be labeled for him to give his all for his friend <3
also this is a lil angstier in the context of dsmp! dnf, imagining c!dream ruining himself for his king, saying “you don’t have to say you love me, you don’t need to thank me, you don’t even need to wake up, i just want to keep you safe” crie
💚 *Be Kind - Marshmello, Halsey
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i’m not analyzing all the support songs (the ones with an asterisk *) for my personal mental health’s sake 😃👍
💙 *Take It Easy - Surfaces
Oh, when you need a hand / Oh, I will be your friend
Take it easy, yeah / Make yourself feel right at home / Never leave me, yeah / You don't have to feel alone
💚 *Know Your Worth - Khalid
You don't know your worth / All the things I know that you deserve / Say it's not real if it doesn't hurt / Find someone you know will put you first / Find someone who loves you at your worst
💙 *Safe with Me - Gryffin
People tell me I'm a fighter, a survivor / No, I don't suffer fool's luck / I've never been the type to get lonely, yeah / But bein' old kinda gets old, kinda gets cold / Always keepin' it cool, yeah /There's a side of me that they don't see
I want somebody to say to me / "Come lay with me, you're safe with me"
Alright that’s enough for today, gtg cry to my new playlist and focus all my energy on telepathically sending my love to dream. Thank you so much again anon for bringing these BANGER songs to my attention, they’re going right in my own spotify HAHA

Sarah my love!!! From the music asks list may I ask 17, 18, 19, and 20? It always seems like our music tastes overlap so I can't wait to hear the answers to these. Hope you're having the loveliest day <3
Issa, my sweetest honey. Took a while with this because I had to do some THINKING. Oh boy. I am so sorry because I can’t talk about music without going into unnecessary detail.
17. What songs remind you of very specific events or people when you listen to them?
See most songs do this for me, but there’s one that sticks out more than most.
Love Lies by Khalid and Normani. So, a fairly chill song right? Now, I fell in love with this song right when I was detoxing and withdrawals were fucking me up big time. This song, for some reason, I played on repeat while I paced around my house because I couldn’t sleep, and walking helped to settle the restless leg syndrome I was experiencing. I still adore this song because it’s funky as hell, but also reminds me what a fucking SHIT time in my life that was, which helps prevent relapse.
18. Top 5 favourite songs of all time?
This is the hardest fucking question ever? It honestly depends of the day. And my music taste has a wide spectrum so GOD this is going to be difficult. I’ll try to diversify from my different playlists.
I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You) - John Mayer - A classic favourite of mine. The whole Continuum album is a masterpiece, but this song is so effortlessly smooth and funky. Settles me right down.
Sudden Desire - Hayley Williams - This song means, just, SO much to me. Has fuelled so much of my writing. It’s definitely off beat and alternative, but I couldn’t love it more.
Rules - Doja Cat - OKAY but this is the song I never tell anyone I love. But it was my most played on Spotify last year HAHAHA. Because it is a fucking banger. And if you don’t feel like a boss ass bitch listening to it, I honestly can’t help you.
MANTRA - Bring Me The Horizon - Literally like nothing else on this list. This tops my emo/heavy music playlist. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve belted this on the way home from a shitty shift. SO cathartic.
Where Did The Party Go - Fall Out Boy - Yes this one song narrowly edges out the rest, but actually the whole fucking album is my pinnacle. Literally my favourite band and album of all time.
19. Put your library on shuffle and say your favourite lyric from the song that first comes up.
Okay Spotify is dumb and doesn’t let me really shuffle all of my playlists, so I’ll just use my Writing Songs playlist
Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris - Hayley Williams (I adore ALL the lyrics to this song, one about not comparing yourself to others, but here’s a beautiful verse)
‘I have seen your body And I have seen your beauty They are separate things Pretty, pretty, pretty things But I am in a garden Tending to my own So what do I care And what do you care if I grow?’
20. What songs are your ‘go-to’ songs when recommending new music to people?
I can’t do individual songs, but rather some artists I recommend taking a dive into, and my favourites of theirs
Rufus Du Sol - Hypnotised + Brighter + Like an Animal + Eyes
Hayden James - Better Together + Just Friends + Favours + Hold Me Back
NOTD - So Close + Keep You Mine + I Wanna Know + I Miss Myself + Wanted
PVRIS - Death of Me + Old Wounds + Gimme A Minute + Dead Weight + You and I
Against The Current - weapon + that won’t save us + Voices + The Fuss
Au/Ra - Ghost + Assassin + Panic Room + Ideas + i miss u
JFC. This got long. Sorry again.

Love that I can just google the prime numbers.
17.  “Why you still talking 'bout me like we together?, I moved on for the better, You moved on to whoever”
Broken Clocks by SZA
19.  “Or would you love me more?, If you knew the person that I was, yeah yeah”
Love Me Less (feat. Quinn XCII) by MAX
23. “You the one, I wanna see you when I wake up”
Acid Dreams by MAX and Felly
29.  “I drive circles under street lights, Nothing seems to clear my mind, I can't forget”
Malibu Nights by LANY
31.  “She liked petty crimes, she had green eyes, like mountain dew, And where she go, I'll never know, Her friends bounced too”
Hell N Back by Bakar. I just really like the rhythm in this one. Plus I love the whistling.
37.  “Plans were drawn, and concrete poured, And nail by nail and board by board, Daddy gave life to mama's dream.” or “Out here it's like I'm someone else, I thought that maybe I could find myself.”
The House That Built Me by Miranda Lambert. This song is only in the top bc it’s in my sleep playlist, but it is a great song that I recommend to everyone.
41.  “How do you know someone so well and then it changes?, All of a sudden you're strangers, Thinkin' back on us dancing, When you put your feet on top of mine on the living room floor, Well, tell me what was it for? Oh”
Remember by Liam Payne This is really the only song from Liam’s new album that I listened to more than once, but I love it.
43.  “What if I had one more night for goodbye?, If you're not here to turn the lights off I can't sleep,These four walls and me”
These Four Walls by Little Mix. This song is also on my sleep playlist, but it is an underrated Little Mix song.
47. “I've got no money in my hands or my coat or my pocket, Wont get to space cos I haven't got a rocket” or “Yeah the boat may sink but I'm not gonna rock it, Cos the sea doesn't know my name” or “Not a lot to show but this book full of sonnets, And my liver may be fucked but my heart is honest”
Things That Stop You Dreaming by Passenger. Again, sleep playlist. It seems that every other song in this area is, and you decided to hit all of them.
53.  “I wanna be young and party”
Forever by FLETCHER
59.  “Now I'm a fat house cat, Cursing my sore blunt tongue”
Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron & Wine. LMAOOOOO this song is again on my sleep playlist. This is the only song so far that I am a little ashamed of.
61. “I'll never forget the news I got that morning, Wished that I could turn back but the plane was boarding”
Where Am I At by MAX
67.  “And if I have to choose, My heart or you, I'm gonna lose”
Hard Place by H.E.R.
I’m so shocked this song isn’t higher up in this playlist. The only reason I can think of is that I must have gotten into this song last year. I just know that this song was on repeat for awhile. I’ve introduced multiple people to this song.
71. “I want your number tattooed on my arm in ink, I swear”
Nice To Meet Ya by Niall Horan
73.  “I'll be good all by myself, Yeah, I'll find a way to dance without you”
Break Up Song by Little Mix. This song is solely for the melody and the dance that they made for it.
 79.  “We'll hit the drive-thru, like Lil' Wayne, We ain't got no platinum chains, But hand-me-downs are all the rage (aye), So let me spend this pocket change”
Summer On You by PRETTYMUCH. This is teaching me i listen to a lot of artists that have their name in all caps.
 83. “Let's focus on communicatin'”
Location by Khalid
 89.  “Ooga-chaka Ooga-Ooga” and  “Lips are sweet as candy, It's taste stays on my mind” plus the chorus.
Hooked on a Feeling by  Björn Skifs, Blue Swede lol didn’t mean to add links, but i’m leaving them. this song is in multiple of my playlists, so it is a little surprising it’s not higher.
 97. “But everybody wants to put me down, They say I'm going crazy” or  “Got no feel, I got no rhythm, I just keep losing my beat” or  “One day (someday) I'm gonna be free, Lord! Find me somebody to love”
Somebody to Love by Queen
This has saved me so much boredom, so thank you.

Music Muse-ings: Alina Baraz: It Was Divine Album Review
An old blog post from December 3, 2020.
Sometime around 2015 or 2016, I was introduced to this songstress via a music video playlist on Youtube and I had to find out what other works she had. The song was "Fantasy" by Alina Baraz (Feliz Jaehn Remix). At that time, I didn't have Spotify (not sure if even existed then) so I couldn't just add her to my playlist, I really had to dig up other videos online of her work. And I just loved what she has created ever since.
Alina is one of those artists that seem private online but when you listen to her albums and singles, it's full of personal life glimpses. It's almost like reading a private journal of poems. And me being the sucker for lyrics and how a song navigates those words around, it entices me more to keep listening.
Although Alina's sound has changed a bit now from the Urban Flora album, she did not stray very far with the albums that followed it: The Color of You and It Was Divine. Romantic, sensual, gentle and inviting are some of the words I would use to describe her music. It's never in your face loud and always sounds like a soft caress. That's how I imagine her music to be.
Instead of going through every song on the album, I'm just going to focus on the songs that I love from It Was Divine . Since every reviewer puts different meanings to similar songs, I will just share my own relatable feelings and impressions of several songs.
"My Whole Life" feels like taking a walk with your partner at sunset and letting the sun rays shine on both of you.
"Frank" feels like having a frank conversation with your partner about where you both want to go (literally and imaginatively).
"Endlessly" feels like giving and receiving love without an end.
"Off the Grid" is like going to the forest or literally off the grid area and listening to the silence and feeling calm. I always enjoyed her collaborations with Khalid on previous songs "Electric" and "Floating"
"To Me" is such a gem. I can relate to so many of the lyrics on this song. It's a celebration song about being grateful to all the good things in life and letting go of the bad energy.
"Memo Blue" is just a great bridge song from "To Me" to "Who Got Me". The lyrics 'I could only meet you as deep as you have met yourself/ I could only reach you from where are' is such an inward perspective song. Rings so true in any relationship.
"Who Got Me" took me a while to get into this song. Not because anything was wrong with it, it's just that "To Me" just made me not focus on the other songs. But when I started listening to the lyrics of 'Who got me like I got me' I felt it those words!
This is why I am such a fan of Alina Baraz's music. Her art is just so calming and feels like I am reading a poem or journal entry. It's so fluid and inviting.
youtube
It has taken me several months to write this album review (even though I focused only on a few songs that resonated with me). I really wanted to write a review right away but for me to give music a chance, time is needed to be open to listen intently to the sounds and lyrics. I don't like being impulsive with my opinions about the music I want to keep listening for days, months and years.
Overall, It was Divine is such a beautiful album that will forever be played in home. There is no power greater than being calm and soft; Alina Baraz has that kind of power.

Music Shuffle Tag Game!
Task: Put your music library on shuffle and list the first ten songs. Give a few personal liner notes, if you’re inclined.
Thanks @mikotomizuki and @aaviav for the tags! This was a lot of fun, and I love seeing everyone else’s tastes! I listen to so many random playlists and such on Spotify and hardly OWN any music anymore...so I went with ‘shuffle my Liked playlist’ since it probably best captures my magpie approach to music. AKA I listen to just about anything and everything that snags my attention.
------
1. Dishonored 2 - Main Theme : Uhhh this is just a bitchin game with a bitchin atmosphere and whenever I wanna write something dark this is the go-to shit.
2. Solomon Grey - Electric Baby : My usual favorite genre tends to be electric-influenced, what can I say?
3. Yokohama Walker - [Mad Trigger Crew] : look, I’m on the absolute bare fringes of the Hypmic fandom, but you wave MTC (hello Faustie VA) + some awesome jazzy lo-fi beats in my face and I’m there.
4. Snakadaktal - Fall Underneath : Random dream-pop on my playlist? More likely than you think.
5. Bebe Rexha - I Can’t Stop Drinking About You : Sometimes you just wanna...angry dance
6. Mt. Wolf - Red : Thanks Life is Strange 2. I’m always here for melancholic indie shit.
7. Irma - Black Sun : I have a soft spot for anything blues related, and I adore Irma’s voice and music so damn much...it’s like Lauryn Hill meets Lightnin’ Hopkins
8. Fear Like You - Chet Faker & The Royal Swazi Spa : Chet Faker, already sexy. Plus some even sexier legit dirty jazz backing him up? Hells yeah. This song is 69ing on your eardrums every time that chorus kicks in.
9. Brick + Mortar - Locked In a Cage : Somehow my random selection really under-represented the amount of rock I listen to, but Brick + Mortar always delivers on the spare, stripped-down indie version of it
10. Khalid - Saved : I’ve also got a ton of R&B on all of my playlists, it’s definitely a reliable favorite
------
I think most everyone’s been tagged in this thing by now, but if you see this and wants to do it please tag me so that I can read your lists as well!

Shota’s Cool Times Summer Jamz Mix
But for real, this is a Class 1-A Character Analysis, but with their music choices!
So it’s editing day, and @albinoburrito and I got a little off track. It started with, what do you think Bakugo would listen to? And then it just spiraled out of control.
Tumblr media
So, here it is. Shota’s Cool Times Summer Jamz Mix
Izuku: Indie music, general pop, his dad’s old classic rock albums - was especially excited when he found out that All Might also listens to classic rock and uses it for his workouts. He prolly made like 20 new playlists after that and always tries to play them on the down low when All Might is training with him. He fucking loves it when All Might is like, “oh! I love this song”. Or, asks for him to turn the volume up. Has done some low fi for studies, but that’s really the only time he does it. He likes Young the Giant, MGMT, Alt-J, Strfkr and bands like The Rolling Stones and Van Morrison fill out most of his workout playlists.
Bakugo: Honestly, he doesn’t have any hard and fast preferences. If he likes things he SoundHounds them and moves on. He can cultivate playlists, but it’s not like he’s Kaminari level, having playlists for any and all activities. I do feel like he would lean more toward rap & hip hop titles. As well alt and alt rock. No fucking scream-o, or Eminem, please and thank you. Artists like: Childish Gambino, Travis Scott, Drake, blackbear, Missio, NCT 127, and Jaden’s Icon. However, he does have one low key, wind down playlist with sad, sappy songs that he had to immediately lock when the others found his Spotify. Shit like Band of Horses, Lord Huron, and Ocean Eyes by Billie Eilish.
Sero: Indie and indie bops: i.e. Loud Pipes by Ratatat. Some rap & hip hop. Maybe upbeat alternative jams. He strikes me as a Gorillaz fan. He’s good at making playlists, he’s better at the low key ones. Things that you can comfortably listen to and don’t mind them. He doesn’t overthink this. If you hand him the aux you’re never upset. You’ll get bands like: Two Door Cinema Club, Passion Pit, St. Lucia, COIN and Coast Modern.
Kaminari: The KING of cultivated playlists. Like, has one for every occasion. Need something for a party that your parents will also attend? Cross generational? He’s got you. Pump up jams for specific people? He made them like a week ago and has choices. Makes playlists for certain people, but won’t give them out unless you actually want them, or ask him. Yes, he made one for Shinso after that training battle. No, he hasn’t worked up the courage to show him yet. Personal preference: he’s into all the latest pop & he keeps up with artists and tends. For upbeat playlists he goes for: Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Maroon 5 and Major Lazer. For low key playlists his go to are: NIKI, Khalid, KALEO, Transviolet, Noah Cyrus, and Bea Miller. His favorite artists waffle. They change rapidly. He loves them one week, but next week he’s got a new fav. He also likes the Jpop scene.
Mina: Hip Hop QUEEN. If it’s got a good beat she is all over it. MUST be a banger. She has mood banger playlists. Like, Kamanari, she’s got some good playlist cultivation skills. She’s also who you want to go to for road trip & sing along playlists. My girl loves a good upbeat “friendship,” playlist. She has a soft spot for some indie bands, i.e, MisterWives, Lorde & Billie Eilish. For her everyday listening needs she is all about: Run the Jewels, Lil Nas X, Quinn XCII, Logic, Calvin Harris, Nicki Minaj and Bhad Bhabie.
Jiro: She listens to all most everything. Massive, massive music pallet. Her family was always big on diversifying her musical tastes. Never let yourself be limited or judgmental because it’s not what you usually listen to. That said, she super big into rock and alt rock. She really like to follow bands. Like Paramour, Panic at the Disco. Bands that have shifted and changed over time. She admires that skill. Jiro cultivates playlists that are super specific and poetic. You know, those concept playlists that are like: enchanting, serene. You are laying in an abandoned castle and you’ve never felt this content and at peace. You are one with the universe, never in your life... Like that shit that’s like a paragraph long and you don’t even understand why, like, why is it so long? And so, specific? She’s got that shit locked down on Spotify. Mina found hers once, ONCE, and she tightened that security seconds later. She loves to listen to: Fleetwood Mac, The Zombies, Joni Mitchell, Terror Jr, Woodkid, Foo Fighters and David Bowie. Literally, she likes everything. Equal opportunity music listener. If it feels good it’s going in a playlist and that playlist is turning into a poem.
Tokoyami: 100% listens to GOTH rock - POST PUNK jams. Don’t @ him. It’s just his vibe k? Siouxsie and the Banshees shit, The Cured, The Smiths, and some good ole’ Evanescence. The darker the better, Revelry in Dark y’all. He’s a sucker for rock opera, that epic extra shit, but it’s also low key embarrassing. He wants no one to know of this. Like if you find it, go away and leaf him alone. Also, never speak of this again. He’s redacted, he’s not even on this list. You didn’t see this.
Iida: Oh my king, he likes some of that Bastille, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, One Republic in his playlists. Low key, alt rock. Good ole’ safe, alt rock. But, he does like some pop songs. Not that he will talk to you about that. When he’s with his folks he likes to masquerade as a classic rock buff. But he’s bluffing pretty hard. He’s working on that with Izuku. He’ll get there you guys. He knows his brother loves it so he’s trying his BEST. For his pump up work outs he does go for that DAFT PUNK techno.
Aoyama: Oh. My. God. He loves flashy bands. Fucking Glam rock all the way. He’s also super, super up to date on the French hip hop and pop scene. Into people like Yelle, Phoenix, Soprano, Ayama Kamura, Stromae. Loves ELO just for the sheer operatic value. ABBA all the way baby. Anything exciting and anything that makes him feel invigorated. His playlists are a little scattered. He really just tosses whatever he’s vibing on in them.
Kirishima: You already know, why are you even looking here? He’s got the manliest playlists. When he was younger it was like, all alt rock, edgy stuff. Once he got to UA he cleansed that pallet. Not that he don’t go back to those playlists sometimes, but he’s also wanting to move on from those feelings. Now? He’s all about that positive rock babyyy. Anything that has a good, upbeat feeling he’s down for. He’s really looking for those VIBES. Things that get him pumped up and ready to go. Bands like: The Bleachers, The Mowgli’s, Banners, Jukebox The Ghost. Just real positive stuff, man. He also dips into classic rock for his workouts. If he feels like that rap song works with his workout jams it’s going in and he’s cranking it up. He totally found Bakugo’s sadboi playlist and immediately told him, hey, man, I have one of those too, emotions amiright? This is why Bakugo private locked his entire account HARD. Look what you did, Kirishima, you can’t see ANY of it now.
Uraraka: My girl likes pop. That bubble gum shit. But, she’s also has a superrrr hardcore rap playlist for her workouts, like, it’s kinda confusing. Mina found that playlist first and was like ????? I-Is this you? Like this playlist has DMX, Jedi Mind Tricks, Kanye, LL Cool Jay, A$ap Rocky, like, some tunes that get her GOING. But, she loves that cute Jpop and Kpop. She’s got tons of road jam playlists. Those you can put on and everyone is like, ooooooh, this song!!! She’s also has like 3 Disney playlists, for different moods. She also loves Girl in Red, Louis the Child, Hailee Steinfeld, and Mitski.
Todoroki: He...doesn’t have much experience with music cultivation. Like, he knows some songs, he didn’t live under a rock, but he also kinda did...so, that stunted him, in more ways than one. Thanks Endeavor. But, thanks to his classmates, he is starting to get the hang of this. He over thinks this stuff. Like, this music must speak to him. From Iida he likes Bastille, from Uraraka he likes King Princess, From Izuku he’s learned to love Grizzly Bear, and he really, really likes the playlist that Kaminari made for him. He’s leaning heavily on it to find some more tunes for his own small collection. He also learned that he loves anything that is hard rap as well. Especially if he can play it in front of Endeavor. You know, the ones are like, you didn’t fucking pay your child support, you ass. That aggressive, angry rap: Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole, 21 Savage and Montana of 300. It’s to make his father as uncomfortable as he possibly can be.
Tsuyu: Fucking rainforest and ambient noises. Not really, but also actually. She likes calming sounds, ok? Everyone was like, this is a joke, don’t be ridiculous and then she showed them her playlist of rain sounds. I mean, you go girl. But really, her collection is mostly pop songs, she likes them easy going. Much like her fighting and hero style, she is the glue that holds things together with the class in terms of music selection. Kinda of the bridging gap. Music that you just can’t complain about. Besides, why would you? What’s wrong with you? It’s Froppy. She and Uraraka often find themselves overlapping on their upbeat indie pop playlists, stuff like: Sara Bareilles, Oh Wonder, Kygo, Kero Kero Bonito, Taylor Swift, MARINA, and Regina Spektor. She did find Uraraka’s rap playlist and didn’t....approve. Did not want to use it for their joint workout. No, thank you.
Ojiro: Oh, you don’t get enough screen time son. You really don’t. He’s very low key. Into some indie stuff, like: Lumineers, Local Natives, Morningsiders, Manchester Orchestra, Vampire Weekend. He likes acoustic sounds, really down to earth. Once again, you cannot complain whenever he gets to select the music. Izuku especially approves when he plays his music because he always finds something new. For his workouts he prefers some heavy, heavy rock. You know, when you get to wail the shit out of stuff with your tail. He’s playing that Five Finger Death Punch in his MIND.
Koda: Nature sounds. Honestly. Full. Stop. Dead-ass he is living for artists like Corrine Bailey Rae, Hozier, Alesia Cara, Adele, and Maggie Rogers. He’s also got that Kacey Musgraves and Florence + The Machine on LOCK. Anything that feels ethereal and light is right up his alley. He likes it a little spooky sometimes. He does have a killer Halloween playlist, but he hasn’t ever quite worked up the courage to play it for his classmates. Oh. Also, listens to Enya un-ironically. He also might have a repeat problem with Imogen Heap’s Hide and Seek.
Sato: He’s into new bands that I don’t even fucking listen to. He loves him some alt rock too. But, he’s not above that classic rock. He just likes stuff that he can head bang to. Not a metal head, but low key IS a metal head. Stuff like: Arctic Monkeys, Bring Me The Horizon, Highly Suspect, Royal Blood, The Smashing Pumpkins. He also has a wonderful baking playlist. Like 1950’s crooners. Think Dorris Day, The Ink Spots, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, and Frankie Valli.
Momo: Classical. Moving on. But really, she loves a good brain playlist with musicians, cuz they aren’t artists to her, they have a specific name for the work that they do: Bach, Debussy, Beethoven, Strauss, and some Tchaikovsky...some of his stuff is too much, even for her. She is starting to broaden her tastes. She really loves Sato’s baking playlist, those 50’s and 60’s beats are right up her alley. Jiro is slowly getting her to try out some pop and low key alt rock bands too. She’s growing and learning, y’all.
Toru: POP. That Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera MOUSE CLUB STUFF. She likes sing-alongs. Like has 20 Disney playlists and is always, always down to do a Grease playlist. You honestly feel attacked by how upbeat and peppy her playlists are, ATTACKED BY A GOOD TIME. It’s teen bop pop all the way here folks, no need to dig too deeply into it. She likes: Lizzo, Beyoncé, T. Swift, but like, leans into her hard, she is a swifter head, or whatever it’s called...Arizona, Carly Rae Jepson, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Harry Styles, Katy Perry, and Kesha among the millions of others.
Shoji: This guy. He loves him some alt rock. He, like Ojiro, needs more screen time. He likely listens to lofi playlists fully. Like, not in the way Izuku just listens to them when he’s studying, but like, for fun. Like he actually GETS them, you know? He likes bands like: Cage the Elephant, Beck, Broken Bells, Modest Mouse, The Killers, Neon Trees and Grouplove. For real tho, he needs more screen time.
Aaaaaaaand Mineta: He needs less screen time. Thank you your honor, I rest my case. Um, but like, he’s down for that dirty rap. Like, the slimier the better. If it’s ass, money, pussy, he’s on it. Big Sean is his hero. He thinks the Weekend is the best singer known to man. If this upsets you, I am sorry. I love him too, but sometimes we gotta face the truth. Mineta loves, loves, loves the Weekend. He’s also super down on the Megan Thee Stallion train. Oh, and Cardi B too. He also likes Tyga and Sage the Gemini. These are his top pics. His current ringtone is WAP and Aizawa nearly snapped his phone in half when he heard that go off in his classroom.
Bonus:
- Aizawa: Yes, he has heard WAP. He’s literally attached at the hip to a dj and you know Midnight and Present Mic were all over that song when it was released. Those two tried to do that tiktok choral rendition of it. It didn’t go well. But seriously, this man likes a little bit of everything. He’s a no-fuss, low key guy and his music tastes are the same. He likes alternative and indie the most. Some of that: Sylvan Esso, Silversun Pickups, The Black Keys, The Flaming Lips, The Strokes, Cake, Incubus, and the Deftones. While he has no time to cultivate playlists, he does have a grading playlist that he quickly threw together. It helps him to zone in and work. Yes, Present Mic likes to add funky shit to it, just to ruffle his feathers. In the worst universe, slash in THIS universe, Aizawa was too lazy to get his own Spotify and he shares one with Present Mic. That poor algorithm has no idea what to recommend. He’s just waiting for that cease and desist letter from Spotify’s fraud department. Any day now.
Alright! Hope ya’ll liked it. Lemme know if you want more. We kinda started on one for the LOV, but it’s not finished just yet. In other news, we WILL edit the new chapter of “Look Upon the Light” tonight, don’t worry, we’ll be good. It should be out in the next few days.
