theres something extremely powerful in studying your local history and ive said that before but also its extra intense when you keep running into a guy who 250 years ago was the same age you are now and was working in the field your degree is in and you're just looking up maps of the city for research unrelated to him, and your search gets you an unbelievably beautiful and detailed map he drew of this city you both share across time.

Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends is a show that I really want to like as it has a great premise and a creative art style but damn the writing is just too inconsistent, sometimes it’s actually pretty good and enjoyable but other times it’s a snooze fest and/or unfunny in a way similar to fellow 2000s CN shows Gym Partner and Squirrel Boy with the vanilla main character and jerkass friend dynamic and way too much time filler.

A guiding light of my career has been extinguished.  My friend and colleague in cartoons, Everett Peck passed away on June 14th, 2022.  I met and came to admire him when I directed on the first show he created, Duckman (1994-1997).  We have kept in touch ever since.  I was honored when he chose me to supervise his next series at Cartoon Network, Squirrel Boy (2006-2007).  He was the only person I knew who shared a passion for WW2 airplanes, baseball and old, goofy cartoons.

I’ll never have another friend like him again.

It must be emphasized that Everett was way, WAY more than a guy who created cartoons.  He possessed a monster, singular talent.  His draftsmanship was a unique fusion of classical and underground hand-drawn illustration; equal parts Robert Crumb and Honoré Daumier.  Add to that mix, an acid wit and a penchant for subversive and edgy humor. The E. Peck style was/is unmistakably idiosyncratic. 

He was an incredible caricaturist; capable of drawing his subjects into sardonic, laser-focused distillations on par with Thomas Nast.  He even did caricatures of me.  It’s a design element at my website and even the icon of this tumblr!

Add to that his whole other career as a teacher and a painter.  His output on canvas was often a kinetic, phantasmagorical explosion of mixed-media and color of colliding styles, feeling like a fever dream. 

Besides his legacy in art, Everett taught animation design at Cal State Long Beach, mentoring the next generation of artists with his wisdom.

Please seek his work out if you are not familiar with Everett’s work.  I doubt we’ll ever see anything like “E. Peck” again.
