My mom loves fresh corn in the summer, and I try and avoid processed corn so was also into the idea of fresh. I’d never roasted it in-husk in the oven before and really enjoyed the streamlining of the cooking and cleanup.

Summer Foods for Dental Health
With summer quickly approaching, a plethora of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and other foods will soon grace our tables. Among these offerings are some excellent choices that not only tantalize the taste buds but also promote oral health. However, it's important to note that certain acidic fruits can potentially erode enamel, so it's wise to consume them alongside low-acid options or rinse with water afterward. Here are some top picks for summer foods that contribute to healthy teeth:
Fruits
Apples: While typically associated with fall, certain varieties like Yellow Transparent, Earligold, Jersey Mac, Gala, and Lodi apples are harvested in summer. Apples stimulate saliva production, aiding in the removal of bacteria and food particles, and their high water content helps dilute the sugars they contain. Additionally, their crunchy texture can bolster gum health.
Strawberries: Rich in vitamin C, strawberries possess anti-inflammatory properties and promote collagen production, which aids in combating periodontal disease. They also contain calcium, contributing to the health of teeth and bones.
Peaches: Bursting with fluoride, an essential mineral for dental health, peaches support enamel remineralization and repair while also offering vitamin C to reduce inflammation.
Leafy Greens
Butter Lettuce: A popular summer leafy green, butter lettuce is packed with vitamin A, crucial for enamel formation, and contains traces of calcium to fortify teeth and bones.
Cheese
Seasonal Cheeses: Varieties like Feta, Goat Cheese, Ricotta, and Mozzarella, which are particularly abundant in summer, boast calcium and protein content that strengthens teeth and bones. Chewing cheese also stimulates saliva production, aiding in oral hygiene.
Fish & Meats
Lean Meats: Grilling lean meats such as turkey and chicken provides a protein-rich option that includes phosphorus, supporting jaw and tooth strength.
Fatty Fish: Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, fatty fish have been linked to a reduced risk of gum disease, making them a valuable addition to summer menus.
Eggs/Beans
Eggs: A source of phosphorus, eggs can be enjoyed as boiled or stuffed eggs, using Greek yogurt and low-fat cream cheese instead of mayonnaise for a healthier twist.
Beans: High in fiber, beans require extensive chewing, promoting saliva production and contributing to dental health.
While these summer foods offer numerous benefits for dental health, it's essential to avoid sticky snacks that are difficult to remove from teeth and to moderate consumption of sugary treats throughout the day. By incorporating these nutritious options into your summer diet, you can enjoy both delicious flavors and a bright, healthy smile.
